♡ A guide to emo, goth, and scene! ♡
So since I see a lot of confusion over certain subcultures are and the differences between them, I thought I would make somewhat of a master post basically outlining the characteristics and differences of three aesthetics that I see misinterpreted a lot. If I do at any point get something wrong, feel free to correct me because I really don't intend to spread misinformation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
🎀 Emo
Emo is a music based subculture that first emerged in the 80s out of the hardcore scene. The name emo came from the music genre emocore, which was short for emotional hardcore. The fashion is typically pretty casual, with some staples being straightened and teased hair with a sideways fringe, black clothing, band shirts, arm warmers, sneakers, skinny jeans, fishnets, arm warmers, wide leg pants, studded belts, and merchandise from various properties like Emily The Strange, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Ruby Gloom.
Since the early days of emo, the music in the subculture has expanded outside of hardcore and post-hardcore, and has since gone on to include alternative rock, horror punk, metalcore, pop punk, and screamo. Some of the most prominent artists in the scene are Avril Lavigne, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Panic! at the Disco, Paramore, Pierce The Veil, and Sleeping With Sirens.
Since the subculture is mainly music based, fashion is not as important to being considered part of the scene. Therefore, not dressing in a specific way while listening to the music wouldn't make you a poser, but dressing emo while not listening to the music would. What is not considered emo is listening to a random genre of rock music. Bands like Metallica and Nirvana, while enjoyed by many emos, are not emo bands and therefore don't make someone emo. Furthermore, I can't believe I need to say this, but, contrary to what many people seem to think, kawaii people are also not emo. While it is common for kawaii people to listen to metal and other heavy music genres, their style is not at all similar to emo and they don't consider themselves as part of the subculture either.
🎀 Goth
Goth is probably the oldest subculture here, with it dating back to the 70s English punk scene, with bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Cure pioneering the culture. The post-punk band Bauhaus' debut single 'Bela Lugosi's Dead,' a song inspired by the famous horror actor Bela Lugosi, who portrayed Dracula in the 1931 film adaptation and also starred in White Zombie which is a film that's typically referred to as the first zombie movie, is often considered the first gothic rock song.
Goth is a subculture with many different sub-subcultures. Some of the most popular are batcave, bubble goth, cyber goth (formerly referred to as gravers), death rock, mall goth (formerly known as spooky kids), nu goth, romantic goth, steampunk, vampire goth, and, my personal favourite, gothic lolita. Contrary to what many people think, I don't consider aesthetics like pastel goth (which I do love) to really be a part of goth since it doesn't have roots in goth. Obviously I'm not going to go over every substyle because that would take way too long and would have to require its own post, but some common staples in most of these styles is lots of black, horror-inspired imagery, very big teased hair, black or red lipstick (red was the most common in the earlier days), and very pale almost white skin. Therefore, e-girls and emos (e-girls especially) are not goth. Also, the fetishisation of the 'big tiddy goth girlfriend' is very demeaning and offensive to goths, as well as just not funny at all because of how it objectifies and reduces them to simply walking breasts who wear black.
Goth music is, in my opinion, some of the most accesible and palatable alternative music. The most popular genres are dark wave, electronic rock, gothic rock, industrial metal and rock, new wave, and post-punk. Some of the most popular bands are Bauhaus, Evanescence, Joy Division, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Birthday Massacre, and The Cure.
🎀 Scene
Scene is an aesthetic that originated in the 2000s on the website MySpace as a derivative aesthetic to emo. Many scene kids were considered emo posers because of their unconventional style and the music they listened to, which included genres ranging from crunkcore to metalcore, often being considered 'trashy' by other subcultures. Despite all of the hate towards scene kids, many embraced their label and many of the most popular people in the subculture started being known as scene queens who are also often credited as the first influencers. This included people such as Ambrehhhisdead, LedaMonsterBunny, and Melissa Marie Green.
Some staples to the style are colourful clothes, straightened and teased hair with colourful raccoon hair extensions, the scene swoop fringe, brass knuckles or diamond necklaces, bows, leopard print, zebra print, colourful shorts, tutus, tight clothes, sunglasses, knee high converse, band shirts, and merchandise of characters like Gir from Invader Zim, Gloomy Bear, and Hello Kitty. Personally, I would consider the modern rendition of scene, scenecore, to be a different aesthetic that, while it is pretty similar to scene, typically borrows from aesthetics like glitchcore rather than emo or mcbling.
Scene music is pretty diverse in what it provides, as it ranges from very heavy genres such as deathcore and metalcore to more pop and rap adjacent genres like crunkcore and neon pop. Some of the most prominent artists are 3OH!3, All Time Low, Asking Alexandria, Blood on the Dance Floor (unfortunately), Bring Me The Horizon, Brokencyde, Cobra Starship, Dot Dot Curve, Jeffree Star, Ke$ha, Metro Station, and Millionaires. A lot of the music is known to ignore many of the typically conventions of music, with the lyrics often containing themes relating to partying and sex.

I need to get these out of my system, so‼️‼️
Meet my ultra original Homestuck fankid!!
Dead-Eyed Cindy!
Tumblr media
a.k.a. Cynthia Lenore!🗝️
A completely normal teenager, just like every other teen in Homestuck, trust!!🤚
Tumblr media
More about her under the cut!!
(Note that this drawing was made when I just returned to HS and haven't yet seen some of the amazing variations of their designs here on Tumblr, so my design for Dave will probably be changed, idk)
She lived with her Big Sister, they were Strider's neighbors from a floor down
They lived in hard financial conditions, her Sister overworked herself to provide for them both and was almost never home to look after Cindy, which forced Cindy to fend for herself most of the time when she was little
She met Dave on the roof once, the meeting involved spying on his Bro and her Sister talking about some secret Older Sibling Stuff or something. It looked like her Sister was crying? Overall a pretty awkward first meeting
Cindy felt guilty often about their situation for some reason, so she helped with whatever she could in the house
But her relationship with her Sister was.. not ideal, it was very strained and painful for both of them, Cindy felt hurt from her Sister not being around much, even if she understood why that was
Even so, she still felt cared for and appreciated her Sister and her sacrifices
Cindy was bullied in school, I know, shocker, she was considered weird, dirty, ugly, scary, and was avoided most of the time. Some kids called her "Dead-Eyed Cindy", because of how her eyes resemble the ones of a dead fish, but she reclaimed that nickname for herself, because she thinks it makes her sound badass. She didn't know what friendship was supposed to be like, and convinced herself she was better off without anyone, but she desperately wanted to have real friends she could trust one day
She was very stiff emotionally when she first started chatting with Dave, but with time became more sincere and open thanks to also getting to know Rose, Jade, and John
She and Dave are both weird dead thing collectors, but Cindy prefers to collect animal bones and skulls. Their music preferences don't match like. In any form, but Cynthia greatly enjoys Dave's mixes and tunes, and always encouraged him to do more
She adores gothic rock, punk rock, heavy metal, screamo and any other "edgy" music genre you can think of
Of course she didn't have money to go to concerts and buy merch of her favorite bands, so all the posters in her room were home printed
She's all about that messy grungy look. Her hair? Intentually cut like that by herself. Smeared makeup? Her favorite style. Her clothes? Ripped and modified by herself. She wanted to ward off normies away from her this way, not caring about what other people think of her, and also just because she likes the style
She didn't like Rose's overly posh way of wording things at first(so pretentious), but they quickly clicked over shared interests in goth culture and the paranormal unknown, Cindy cares about her greatly and comforted her through the hardships Rose had to endure
Cindy didn't know what to think of Jade's strangeness and, quite frankly, didn't like her vibes at first, but warmed up to her greatly with time and really sympathized with her, Cindy really believes Jade deserves so much better, and is determined to let her know they care
John was very intimidated by Cindy at first, and Cindy assumed he just didn't like her, so she acted more coldly towards him, and it continued to be like that for a pretty awkwardly long time, but of course his dorkiness hooked her up quick, as it did his other friends, and they slowly but surely became very close; Cynthia became very protective of Egbert fast
Cindy always tries to put in work into her friendships, as she naturally doesn't want to be alone again, but also because she doesn't want her friends to feel left out or ignored, cause she knows what it's like
Which also seems like overcompensation, as she feels like she's not the best person to be around, so she tries to be helpful, even when she no longer has any mental resources for that
She had no clue about what kind of game Sburb even was, and she definitely didn't have time to ask when meteors suddenly started raining from the sky
No fucking way was she going to die if she could help it, so she fought for her and her friends' lives with all she had
How was she able to godtier and whatnot without entering the game? Beats me, you're asking as if I should know and write some good explanation for it and make it make sense🙄🙄💅 I just wanna play touoys, hope you understand💓
Cindy started questioning her identity along the way of their adventures on the meteor, and started using she/they/him pronouns
If I had to write about her relationships with all of the trolls we'd be here all day, so let me just point out the most relevant things here <3
Gamzee had a pitch crush on her, and they entertained the idea for a while, but she quickly recoiled from that when Gamzee, uh, started doing Stuff. She actively maintains friendships with Aradia, Kanaya, and Tavros, and is on good terms with Terezi, Sollux, and Nepeta. It's a bit more complicated with the others, though.. Their relationship with Karkat was very murky and tense at first, she wasn't having his bullshit, but he grew on them with time, when Cindy realized they both have similar goals and wants. She can't tolerate Eridan's bullshit and mostly avoids him, doesn't like Equius for his attitude and hates him for what he did to Aradia, Feferi.. well, they just can't find a common ground, especially because Feferi's royalty, and Cindy holds no respect for them. And Vriska.. he justifiably doesn't like her, at all, but is somewhat sympathetic of her issues.
She is a Page of Blood, and their journey of self-realization had to teach him that she can't win and please them all, that they can be their true self around her friends, and that he can also depend on others for help when she needs it
She learned to make chains from blood, his or otherwise, and use them in battle, and at their highest potential she can bind someone's body to another's and adjust what it means according to situation.
You're badly injured and there's no one else to help in sight? She can bind your body to hers and share their life essence with you, practically making it so you both share an internal system, and if she's healthy enough, then you'll be too in a second
He can drain someone's blood and give it to another if they need it, she can solidify blood inside someone's veins to make it hard to move
She can make a dying person's heart beat via a blood bind, but it's very draining for her and can be quite deadly if done hastily and improperly, and he can't do it when a body already went cold, at least they didn't learn how to, maybe with enough conviction and training she could one day🤔
Maybe with time she found even more uses and possibilities for her chains
She's a great motivator, especially if it's his friends that need morale, they always have their friends' backs
She's not a fan of being a leader, but can be if the situation calls for it
Overall, Cynthia is a person with an intimidating exterior, and warm and genuine interior!🥹
Here's the ref with both the casual fit and the godtier pajamas in full color👇

Music Artists I think the HOA Characters (Season 1 Specifically) would listen to!
Note: First head canon type thing I am putting on here (yay!). This is something I have thought a lot just myself in my lonesome so Id thought Id share it here! If you have any other ideas of what certain characters would listen to I would love to hear!
Nina
-> I think we as a fandom have collectively decided that Nina would 100% be a swiftie (and I agree). Her favorite album would be either Speak Now or Folklore, however, her fav song would probs be "London Boy" off of the Lover album though (for obvious reasons)
-> I can see her listening to some other softer artists like beabadobee, Clairo, and Boygenius (shes a softie at heart what can I say)
-> "All American Bitch" by Olivia Rodrigo is her confidence booster song for sure
-> Her and Amber have 2000-2010's pop music dance parties in their room together (which make annoy some of the housemates from them jumping around and dancing; also get in trouble with Victor about it but its worth it to them)
->Ok I need you guys to HEAR ME OUT with this one, but...Nina definitely is a little (just a little bit) of a theatre kid. I mean let's be real, she wrote an entire play for the school AND performed in it,,,my girl def is a little bit of a theatre girl. So with that being said, she listens to some show tunes from musicals (mostly Waitress and Mamma Mia)
Amber
-> She would so be a Y2k pop listening type of girl
-> Favorite songs would be "Rich Girl" by Gwen Stefani, "Just Dance" by Lady Gaga, HEAVY ON "Stars are Blind" by Paris Hilton!!!!!!
-> Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, if its an iconic pop girl, she listens to them
-> Marina and the Diamonds. IDK IT JUST MAKES SO MUCH SENSE TO ME I CANNOT EXPLAIN. Some of her songs just give that "it girl" energy and if there is an "it girl" of the Anubis house its miss Amber Millington. "Bubblegum Bitch" is blasted in her car with the top down (because she def has a convertible and its pink)
-> Ariana Grande stan. Probably had a stroke when Ariana came out with a makeup line and bought ALL OF IT.
Fabian
-> Fabian def listens to alternative music old and new.
->LOVES THE SMITHS! Like its almost the only thing he listens to
-> Favorite songs by the Smiths include "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" and "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want"
-> Listens to the Arctic Monkeys for sure
-> Some other artists he listens to are Radiohead, The Cranberries, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and TV Girl.
-> Fabian is my favorite awkward loser boy... he listens to Weezer
Patricia
-> Didn't Alfie call her like a "Punk rock/goth vixen" or something like that? (I can't remember the quote or the episode it is in for the life of me)
-> Regardless of whatever the quote was, this is our punk rock alternative queen right here
-> PARAMORE SHE LIKES PARAMORE (has a crush on Hayley Williams because I said so)
-> Had a Panic At the Disco and FallOutBoy phase for sure
-> Listens to the Smiths a little bit (because Fabian showed her some songs)
-> Also listens to some metal rock, loves Poppy and always liked her weird concepts
Alfie
-> Alfie listens to anything and everything I feel like
-> alternative, pop, rock, jazz, electronic, DISCO, hell even fucking dubstep.
-> If he likes it, that's all that matters to him. He doesn't care about the genre or style of music it is
-> I feel he would listen to a lot of artists from the 70s and 80s (idk if that's because of Jeromes quote about him being stuck in the 80s but it would make sense!)
->Loves ABBA, BeesGees, Earth Wind and Fire, and WHAM
-> When "Lets Groove" by Earth Wind and Fire was trending on tiktok, he played it every chance he could. That song has been banned from the house since.
Jerome
-> Like Fabian, he's an Arctic Monkeys fan
-> ADVID LISTENER OF I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME
-> Favorite song by IDKHBTFM is Choke
-> I feel like he would also love Childish Gambino idk why I just feels right
-> Secretly listens to Mitski. That boy has been traumatized even BEFORE he was at Anubis, he deserves to cry to Mitski
-> The Neighborhood is a favorite of his (especially their song Daddy Issues because of,,, obvious reasons) Second favorite song of theirs would be Single (if you haven't heard that song highly recommend)
-> Hozier feels right for him idk
Joy
-> I think as a fandom we have concluded that she is also a swiftie. Her favorite album is Midnights and Reputation imo
-> HEAVY ON OLIVIA RODRIGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-> The Sour album was life changing for her (same can be said for Guts)
-> Literally her top songs of the year were all from the album. Jealously Jealousy, Favorite Crime, Hope You're Happy, Good for You to be specific
-> I can see her being a Harry fan
-> Definitely forced Patricia to go to Love on Tour (Patricia liked it, but she definitely won't tell you that)
-> She was a One Directioner so naturally, the love carried on into the members solo careers (had to miss class when Zayn left)
Mara
-> LAUFEY LAUFEY LAUFEY LAUFEY LAUFEY!!!!!!!
-> Also just listens to old Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Dean Martin
-> Listened to 5SOS during her brief "bad girl" era to help prove her point but she actually ended up really liking them!
Mick
-> Ed Sheeran and Jojo Siwa
*AUTHOR NOTE* I really hope you guys enjoyed this! Tbh it took a while because a few were tricky for me. Please fell free let me know if you have any you would add. Sorry some descriptions are longer than others

My Hero Academia Class 1-A Music Headcanons
I've been catching up on the manga and thinking a lot about Jiro making a collaborative playlist to help her really connect with her classmates lately. Anyway,
Deku listens to soundtracks, like bombastic instrumentals from old superhero movies, and I like to think he enjoys some fantasy adventures too. He also likes J-rock, including some openings and endings from the anime. He's pretty open to recommendations no matter the genre, but generally prefers more mellow stuff to help him relax and study or just unwind after a long day, and tends to listen to the same small handful of his favourite songs anyway.
Bakugo listens to heavy metal, particularly extreme metal. He loves the blast beat drumming and harsh vocals. A lot of the lyrics are incomprehensible upon listening, but if you took the time to look some of them up, they'd give more insight to his more vulnerable side that he's too prideful to show. I also like the idea of him having a softer private playlist that nobody lives to speak of.
Ochako didn't really seek out new music on her own before high school and formed her taste mostly from the radio or recommendations from friends. She has a lot of fun going through the playlist and she's happy to listen to anything from bubbly J-pop to heavy metal. I think she'd be a big fan of Babymetal.
Iida also likes instrumentals for studying, but more classical, and with faster tempos that he can take his morning runs to as well, like allegro. Something like hardcore techno would be funny, maybe some sport anthems, and a few more mellow rock songs that he picked up from his brother for when he needs to cool down.
Todoroki was very isolated and had a really limited musical library before high school. He'd also just listen to some classical, traditional Japanese music, or whatever was on the radio, if anything at all. He later gravitates to edgy alternative rock, or anything with relatable lyrics that help him vent his emotions. I think he could use that.
Tokoyami likes goth, modern classical, anything mellow, dark and ethereal-sounding with poetic lyrics. His music is oddly calming and haunting at the same time. He doesn't like anything too loud or harsh-sounding, partially because it can excite Dark Shadow too much.
Tsuyu and Koda both listen to cozy movie soundtracks, like from Disney or Ghibli, folk, lo-fi, ambient nature sounds, anything grounding and soothing, or "cottagecore".
Momo listens to classical, traditional pop, or modern music with elements of either, like baroque/chamber pop.
Jiro is already confirmed to have a preference for rock, probably alternative rock, and punk. I'd like to think some metal as well, but she'll listen to almost any genre and has impeccable taste in everything. She was largely influenced by her parents, and maybe grandparents, so her library spans a few decades as well.
Mina and Toru both listen to upbeat J-pop, and I like to think one of them introduced the others to Little Glee Monster. Maybe some sappy or wistful love songs more in private. Mina also likes 70s pop, disco and hip-hop, the kind of music that just compells you to dance and sing at the top of your lungs, maybe some psychedelic space rock and sci-fi horror soundtracks.
Kirishima is also confirmed to like 80s rock, like Eikichi Yazawa and Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi. I'd also think he likes stuff from as far back as the 50/60s as well, since Yazawa is the closest thing to Elvis from Japan that I know of, and that he picks up some more modern hard rock and metal mostly from Bakugo and Tetsutetsu as well.
Kaminari and Mineta both listen to J-pop, mostly from female idols that they think are cute. Besides that, Kaminari likes pop rock/punk and a lot of English music, and seems to have formed a lot of his taste from whatever was popular on the radio or social media with the occasional unexpected banger. He also had a dubstep, Vocaloid and hyperpop phase.
Sero is almost as adventurous as Jiro with music. He has a talent for finding underrated indie bands, and songs in a few different languages as well.
Aoyama also listens to some classical, but more opera, as well as French pop, some disco and house that he can vogue to. It's mostly upbeat but there's some sad-sounding songs in there as well that the others can't translate.
Shoji doesn't have much to contribute, being a minimalist, but he generally likes the more mellow indie stuff. He can get overstimulated easily.
Sato and Ojiro both like upbeat stuff, and enjoy music more as background noise for training, or baking in Sato's case. I also think Sato would enjoy the girls' bubbly pop music, and Ojiro would like some traditional stuff. Idk man they're nothing characters

Modern AU Music Preferences
- Hiccup: indie, folk music, alt rock, and pop rock. Probably likes Imagine Dragons 😉 - Astrid: only listens to music for studying and exercising. Will literally just put on whatever playlist is appropriate to the situation according to Youtube or Spotify. People ask her what music she listens to, and she's like "whatever the situation requires." - Fishlegs: Likes jazz and classical like a goddamn nerd. Probably very into music theory. - Snotlout: Loves anything 80s and 90s. Metal, rap, pop, anything. Guilty pleasures are Madonna and any 90s boyband. Don't tell anyone he likes Hanson or he'll kill you. Well, he'll try anyway. - Ruff and Tuff: Really into punk, industrial, and rap rock. - Dagur: Into metal, especially heavy metal and nu metal. His music tastes overlap with the twins' occasionally and they go to concerts together. Always in the mosh pit. - Heather: Emo, alt rock, post-punk, and goth. She and Hiccup like a lot of the same early 00s bands. - Gobber: Country music and sea shanties. - Stoick: likes Dad Music. You know, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel, etc. - Valka: It's not one specific genre, but don't know how to describe it other than hippie music? Like Heather Dale, Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, Celtic Woman, Blackmore's Night, etc.

this is kind of off topic so i hope you don't mind the ramble i'm just passionate about this stuff. i for sure agree with you - it's even gone full circle if you look at the evolution of trap and internet rap and playboi carti's whole deal rn if youre familiar with it at all. him and his record label have taken heavy inspiration from early britsh punk rock and post punk acts + even nu metal in music, style, and even in their live shows; nowadays you won't see a single rap show without moshing. their fans are all doing liberty spikes and dressing in all black and styling themselves in tripp pants. again this is straying off topic, but i just find it kinda fascinating
Noo I think it’s on topic and I definitely agree with you. I’m not gonna say I’m the most knowledgeable on this stuff but I have seen people talk about the more goth roots of a lot of rappers today. I think that’s a mix of the fact that the two genres of rock and rap aren’t as different as you’d expect and the younger generation being brought up in a more culturally diverse climate when it comes to the arts.
There’s also a reason why Gerard said in mid 2000s interviews that the best reception within the industry largely came from rappers and hiphop artists lol. Jay-z referencing mcr in a song. A bunch of these rappers revealing they’re mcr fans online. These scenes have always been interconnected and I think a large part of that comes from song writing style.

Remember that one post I’ve made about putting Gwen, Trent, Owen, and Duncan in a band? Yeah it’s now an au called “Battle of the Bands!! 🎸”
For context: A number of the contestants from the show compete against each other in a large tournament to see which band holds the title of “the best band” and not to mention, the winners are rewarded $7 billion dollars and eternal fame. it’s obviously hosted by yours truly, Chris McLean, a retired singer whose the true mastermind behind all this. So get ready for the biggest, musically, rocking contest your young eyes had ever witnessed. Oh and lest I forget the tournament also shares similarities with the og total drama? With music-related obstacles and a band/team booted out the competition? Noooooo
Each band debuts from a certain music genre with our main stars, (Gwen, Trent, Owen, Duncan) being a rock n’ roll band; they’re called “The Final Steps” (*wink* *wink*)
Gwen - lead singer
Trent - guitarist/backup singer
Duncan - bassist
Owen - drummer
They’re a pretty niche rock band who’re only in the contest to get the recognition they deserve. Each have their own style and outfit reflecting a subgenre of rock.
Trent and Owen started out as childhood best friends who were later reunited in high school. They’d met Gwen, a social outcast who’d always had a burning passion for rock. And finally Duncan, a juvenile delinquent who wanted to escape from his notorious lifestyle into a world of fame.
Before the band was a band, they really didn’t have a nice agreement on what the genre should be since all four of them had their own unique tastes on rock music.
Trent - Emo rock/Alternative
Gwen - Goth rock/Heavy Metal
Owen - Christian rock/Hard rock
Duncan - Punk rock/Nu-Metal
It wasn’t really difficult to find the solution so they decided to combine all their favorite subgenres into one and that’s how The Final Steps were born.
Now this is a really intriguing concept I couldn’t believe I’d thought off the top of my head and I’ll be looking forward to develop this au more, introducing more characters into the story, making twists and turns along the way and revealing the final boss at the end, it’s gonna be amazing.
the world deserves more rock owen!
I can imagine them meeting up at each other's houses to write songs, practice, and brainstorm band names. (is their band name a reference to something?)
I'm also really interested in what challenges Chris has planned for the tounament. Also, FINAL BOSS?????

If your characters were to be styles/fashions/music taste. Which one would they be?
Oh I love this question!
I'd say each of them would be different from each other, but to keep this short, I will be focusing on my characters, the operator, the journalist, the observer, and asrar.
I believe the operator would enjoy colors like honey orange/yellow, black, and white to put into her outfits, most commonly dresses, but I can see her wearing a skirt and shirt. The best I describe is that it is almost heavenly like. She is a godess, after all. I find she would like lady gaga alot that is, IF she had an interest in music. So, in short, anything that makes her look or sound divine.
Asrar, he would like any genre of music taste. He'd like punk rock or heavy metal, and with those following in its fashion. He's wild and chaotic, so it fits him just right. There's not much to say about that. It's pretty self-explanatory.
The journalist isn't really tough to describe, more like a grumpy librarian who ALSO would listen to Lady Gaga and some classical as well. For fashion wise, I'd say between robes, sweatpants and a sweater or something in-between. He likes comfortable clothing.
The observer would DEFINITELY be trad goth or something around there, and I see it so clearly. Though I believe they would have a mix of rock and gothic in there for music taste. There like the Dracula of the group that hides in their scary dark castle and shrivels up at any sign of a being of excellence around.

artists i associate to the diabolik lovers characters
(+ explanations/headcanons!)
this is gonna be a long post since i absolutely LOVE talking about music. you may take this as a music recommendations post lol. also check my DL playlists out if you want to! 💗
SHU — WITHIN TEMPTATION
let's start with some nice symphonic metal! it's pretty obvious since shu likes classical music. he's relatively calm (maybe too much) but there's a storm inside of him: his double side fits this band a lot imo. moreover, within temptation are powerful but also ethereal, so even though they're "heavy" i think he would give a chance to them :D he would occasionally cover their songs on violin if he feels like it.
REIJI — APOCALYPTICA
staying on the symphonic metal side, we have apocalyptica. this band is so peculiar since it's only formed by three cellos and drums, but i can assure you they're metal lmao. they're neat, polished, elegant and mature: all of these are basic reiji traits! (shu likes them too but he listens to them secretly lol)
AYATO — PARAMORE / HALESTORM
here he comes. my lil punk boi. i think about too many artists when it comes to ayato, cause honestly just every pop punk artist does it for me, but early paramore music gives me HUGE teen emo vibes (both angsty and romantic) that represent ayato so well!! i already stated it in my rocker!ayato headcanons post, but he would blast the RIOT! album at every hour of the day.
regarding halestorm, they represent his "darker" side. they're heavier and more aggressively free-spirited. now tell me if he wouldn't sing Love Bites (So Do I) to yui "jokingly" lol.
KANATO — THE BIRTHDAY MASSACRE
how could i NOT associate kanato with the band that basically gave birth to the creepy cute genre, the birthday massacre? their particular goth/industrial sound blending with the vocalist chibi's cute, almost ethereal voice gives so many kanato vibes!! not to mention that the official color of the band is purple lmao. he'd find their album covers very aesthetic, i'm sure of it :D and i also think his fav album would be Violet, the creepiest of them all.
LAITO — LADY GAGA / THE PRETTY RECKLESS
basically laito's two personalities lmao. lady gaga doesn't need any introductions: her provocative and sexy persona shocked everyone and basically all of her songs could potentially be in laito's sex playlist.
the pretty reckless are also indeed sexy, but sexy-depressed??? sexy-angsty?? some of their songs are about embracing one's "dark" side, some others are about dealing with depression (especially in their latest works). i like how they both use the "sexy" façade while actually having more to offer. considering how much laito is broken inside, their music fits so well.
SUBARU — BRING ME THE HORIZON
i'll keep saying this: emo music isn't enough for this guy. this dude listens to metalcore and whatever is heavier than emo pop punk. i actually had issues with picking a band for him cause most of them are casual listens to me but!!! in the end i chose bring me the horizon. angsty emo. pure rage. that's simply subaru for you! sometimes he would sing to their songs in his room but never admit it lol.
RUKI — HIM
honestly, this guy would love gothic rock. i just know it. HIM is the perfect band for him! their dark, elegant, kinda sad sound reminds me of him a lot. and the lyrics too!! they're really poetic, mostly about love and death with a few mentions to eden (pun intended?); the vocalist ville valo often takes inspiration for his lyrics from the books he reads! ruki would definitely dedicate Vampire Heart to yui btw.
KOU — AVRIL LAVIGNE / ICON FOR HIRE
LISTEN. i've been headcanoning this ever since my first DL post ever but kou would be a huge avril lavigne fan. it would mostly represent his frivolous idol persona, but also some of what he hides underneath.
his realest and deepest side is represented by icon for hire. they're heavier, aggressive and talk a lot about sensitive topics. kou has one of the worst pasts among the DL characters and has dealt with pretty much everything going from depression, to abuse, to drug addiction, to suicidal tendencies. i think he'd find some sort of comfort in their songs.
YUMA — P.O.D.
i always pictured yuma as a hip-hop kinda guy, so i think he would like nu metal. being part of the angry and bothered trio with ayato and subaru, he's relatively the calmest one but that means nothing since we're in DL lol. p.o.d.'s passive-aggressive style reminds me of him so much and i swear i ALWAYS think about him when i listen to Youth of the Nation, it's like it talks about him and his brothers specifically.
AZUSA — EVANESCENCE
there are two types of emo: the angry emo and the sad emo. azusa obviously belongs to the second one. i can't really associate him to one genre in particular, it just depends on the ~vibes~, but i chose evanescence for him cause their lowkey eerie, slow style fits azusa a lot. fear of abandonment and selflessness are some of the themes they've covered and Lithium is the song that makes me think about azusa the most.
CARLA — NIGHTWISH
carla has that gothic royal-ish attitude that reminds of the first nightwish era (with tarja turunen as vocalist). i mostly tend to associate the deep, elegant lyrical vocals with carla's deep voice lol. it's just a matter of ~vibes~ again :D
SHIN — FROM FIRST TO LAST
this little shit would only listen to post-hardcore. nothing reminds me of shin more than a cringy "i'm angy >:(" music genre. i actually do enjoy some post-hardcore and from first to last is the exception. i think shin would fit especially in the Dead Trees era, aka FFTL's villain arc™: very silly, angsty and full of villanous vibes but more mature than their previous works.
KINO — AMARANTHE
gamer boi coming through with electronic metal!! amaranthe's futuristic mix of edm and metal + their in-your-face attitude is a perfect match with kino. PvP is THE kino song. the music, the lyrics, the game concept just suit him so well!! slay.

Non-Goth Music that Goths might enjoy
Along with what the title says, I will be elaborating on each. It’s mostly going to be metal because that’s my current interest but there will be non-metal recommendations, such as industrial rock or electronic music.
Epicus Doomicus Metallus - Candlemass
Not my personal favorite Candlemass album, that would be Nightfall, but it’s what I think would be most interesting to a Goth looking into other genres. To elaborate on why I think that, it’s the use of the vocals, subject matter, guitarwork, and keyboards. The vocals do an incredible job at communicating both storytelling and extreme emotions like anguish. The subject matter covers things like witchcraft, sorcerers, and wanting to die alone. The guitarwork and tone doesn’t sound anything like post-punk but it’s the way it complements the feelings of doom and anguish that might make it interesting to someone looking into other kinds of dark music.
TL;DR They’re slow, heavy, and dramatic.
I would like to highlight “Solitude” as my best recommendation to a Goth Rock fan, and “Under the Oak” as my personal favorite track.
Ministry
Not recommending any specific album, but specific songs from them. Hell, you might even consider some of Ministry’s work borderline Goth, but the overall genre is Industrial Rock/Metal, at least since they stopped making synthpop.
The tracks I’m recommending are as follows: “Every Day is Halloween” (single), “Golden Dawn” (from their album Land of Rape and Honey, which despite the name is actually referring to a plant and not the reprehensible act), “Cannibal Song” and “Dream Song” (both from The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste).
The first song is already kind of a goth music staple but I thought to include it anyways because I love that song.
DAF (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft)
This one might be a little hard to justify just because of how all over the place they are, but personally I think they really have that post-punk attitude when it comes to their music. They’re basically this really experimental electronic band, hell their early stuff even has noise rock elements. If you’re into the more industrial experimental stuff and don’t need conciseness or melody then this might be an interesting band to look at.
I would like to highlight the tracks “Kebab Träume”, “Ein Bisschen Krieg”, and “Muskel”
King Diamond
I’m going to be blunt, you’re not gonna like this one if you don’t like traditional heavy metal. Along with that, you might not like King Diamond’s vocals. Yes, the band is named after the singer. Anyways, if you like Gothic Rock for the “spooky” Halloween-esque aesthetic, you might just fall in love with King Diamond. He’s an acquired taste for most, due to the unusual falsetto he displays all across his career.
Personally, I fucking love King Diamond. I think instead of recommending any specific song I’d rather recommend whole albums due to the storytelling aspect that King Diamond weaves into most of his discography. To paint you a picture, most of King Diamond’s discography is concept albums that tell horror stories, cleverly using vocals to switch characters, and using keyboards to really give that cheesy but lovable Halloween Horror feel, along with some of the coolest guitarwork in metal, done by the likes of heavy metal legend Andy LaRocque.
Onto highlights, I would like to highlight Fatal Portrait, notably one of the few albums not to be a fully concept album, particularly the tracks “The Candle” and “Haunted”, and Them, a concept album with my personal favorite story, and Conspiracy, the sequel to Them story-wise, which is my personal favorite album.
Celtic Frost
This one might be an odd recommendation if you’re only familiar with their popular stuff, but I’d like to highlight a few tracks that may be of interest.
“Mesmerized” (from their album Into the Pandemonium)
Recommending this one mainly because the vocals are very reminiscent of Rozz Williams from Christian Death, at least in my opinion.
“Os Abysmi Vel Daath” (from their album Monotheist)
This is kind of a risky recommendation, since this song and the album in general is just experimental extreme metal. It’s mainly the vocal performance here makes me want to recommend it, though it might be a bit of a stretch. I love this song but I know it might not be for everyone, though if it gives at least one person a new song to listen to then I’ll be happy.
Zoon - The Nefilim
Industrial Extreme Metal, by the same people behind Fields of the Nephilim. This one is a bit of an oddball in the discography of the people who made it, but personally it’s the only album I like by them anyways. Unfortunately, this was the only album they did in this style and under this name. They do, however, still occasionally perform songs from this album as Fields of the Nephilim. My personal favorite track being “Shine”, which is honestly a bit of a power ballad.
The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails
C’mon. You knew this one was coming. It’s an industrial rock album, and if you haven’t listen to them already you’re most likely going to LOVE “Closer”.
Sacrificed - Edge of Sanity (from The Spectral Sorrows)
It’s a straight up Sisters of Mercy-esque Goth Rock track that’s towards the end of a Death Metal album. The vocalist would go on to start a Goth Rock band, Nightingale.
I’m Going Slightly Mad - Queen (from Innuendo)
You may be confused. That Queen? Yes, same one that made “We Will Rock You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”. This song is called Gothic Rock on wikipedia, but I’m including it anyways because Queen is not a Goth band.
Surprise - The Garden (Single)
This one might confuse you if you’re familiar with this band. From the instrumentation, to the vocals, to the subject matter, it just screamed to me “put me next to Goth music”. Listen to it for yourself and tell me if you get it. For some strange reason it was taken off streaming platforms unfortunately.
Deinonychus
This one is a black metal band with doom metal influences. Another riskier recommendation, what gives me the impression that a Goth might love this is a mix of the use of keyboards, the anguished harsh vocals, and the deep clean vocals. The best example I want to give is “The Weeping of a Thousand Years”, it’s like a bearded vampire speaks the clean vocals and someone tortured in the dungeon of a castle screams the harsh vocals.
Call from the Grave - Bathory (from Under the Sign of the Black Mark)
Another Black Metal band, this one even harder to justify. Bear with me, listen to the song and pretend that a zombie is the one singing. The song starts with this spooky ambience and then goes into this evil groove and later on has a solo that sounds like a funeral dirge, it’s awesome. I have no idea if anyone’s going to get why I’m putting this here along with the others, but if someone does that’ll be awesome.
Give Me Your Soul - Countess (from The Book of the Heretic)
Another Black Metal one, yes, but hear me out. This song is literally goofy spooky Halloween music, and it’s literally from the perspective of a demon who kidnapped someone. I fucking love this song, I just think if you kept an open mind you might love it as much as I do.
Floods - Pantera (from The Great Southern Trendkill)
Okay okay, hear me out again. This is literally borderline Southern Gothic, at least thematically, and topic aside it’s one of the best power ballads out of all of metal with one of the coolest solos literally ever.
Buried Alive - Venom (from Black Metal)
This song is hard to describe, it’s not quite a power ballad, but it’s definitely some sort of ballad. It’s catchy, it’s got a dramatic build up and it’s got groove (it has one of my personal favorite solos ever). Tell me what you think!
Black Sabbath
I find it a little funny that Black Sabbath had a literal “Living in a Box” moment by naming their first song on their first album after themselves. Anyways, this song, “Black Sabbath”, is dramatic and evil. It’s basically the first heavy metal song, and yet it has more doom in it than a lot of modern doom metal bands. Side note, Type O Negative has a fantastic rendition of this song, I could not more HIGHLY recommend giving it a listen.
I also recommend “After All (The Dead)” off of their album Dehumanizer. It’s got the doom and gloom but with that heavy metal oomph to it, so I hope you appreciate this song as much as I do.
Black Mummy - Death SS (from In Death of Steve Sylvester)
I must clarify again, the “SS” part of the name has nothing to do with the Nazis and is short for the singer Steve Sylvester. Anyways, this song has a more traditional heavy metal sound but in a bit of a spooky horror approach. You might ask if it’s anything like King Diamond, I can assure you it’s not.
Scream of the Butterfly - Acid Bath (from When the Kite String Pops)
This one is a bit of a ballad in an otherwise Sludge/Doom Metal album. Unrelated, but if you’re into metal with interesting textures I would definitely recommend this album.
Ghosts - Japan (from Tin Drum)
It feels like cheating to put a New Wave artist on here, but they’re still technically not Goth so I’m putting them anyways.
Filth - Swans
Noise Rock, it’s extreme music that isn’t metal. I’m including this one for a similar reason with DAF, because despite its genre it definitely has a bit of a post-punk attitude to things.
L’Eau Rouge/Red Water - The Young Gods
Industrial Rock with Dark Cabaret elements, oh my god this album is my baby I fucking love it so much. The fact more people don’t know about it feels like a crime.
Gloomy Sunday - Billie Holiday
This is technically not her original song but I enjoy her version a lot. Thematically it’s very dark, so if you are into darker music I would definitely recommend this.
The Devil is an Englishman - Thomas Dolby (Single)
Again it feels like cheating to include a New Wave artist but there’s no way in hell anyone considers Thomas Dolby “Goth”. Though I will say this song was composed for a movie called “Gothic”. Regardless, I would definitely recommend this, it’s dark synthpop.
Auburn and Ivory - Beach House (from Beach House)
Feels like cheating to include dreampop, but why not. I have this song on a playlist with music that makes me feel like a French mime, if that helps give you an idea of the kind of song it is.
Kate Bush
That’s all.
Anna - K.U.K.L. (from The Eye)
This is from one of the bands Björk was in before. Very experimental rock, I would personally recommend the music video version that’s up on youtube instead of the Spotify version.
Einzelhaft - Falco
This album is mostly known for “Der Kommissar”, but I find that there’s other good songs on this album, particularly “Ganz Wien” and “Auf der Flucht”.
An Angel of Great and Terrible Light - Uboa (from The Origin of My Depression)
I’m gonna warn you, this song along with the album this is from may be a very emotionally heavy album for some. However, I’m built different. Anyways I fucking love this particular song from the album.
End of Recommendations
That’s all I have for now, if anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them! I hope this helps someone find new music to love!

Kinda a WIP thing of Floyd and Siouxsie meeting except I don't actually know how they would approach one another lol.
I wanted to draw it, but I can't actually get the backgrounds to work with me, and they're a huge part of it all ://
Anywhore, here's the song he's walking into the scene to if you also want the full effect of his kinda scary introduction to The Underground scene: My Name Is Mud
This lil WIP is only like 500 words, so blerg
He never had to start from so low, already being a well-established artist. Well, a member of a well-known band, at least. And that’s just the problem. He knows who he is in a group. As a band, they all had their roles to play, it all seemed so cut and dry. But going solo, he just feels… lost.
Which is why he’s turned to The Underground Scene. He’s heard of it, but never been, and trying to get information on where the nearest underground was was like pulling teeth. These scenes are a well-kept secret from a great many mainstream spaces, because the Trolls that play there don’t usually have a well-developed space themselves like the other genres do. These areas are coveted by many smaller genres and subgenres. The mainstream have it easy with their whole kingdoms and villages to play in, but groups like Indie, Punk, Goth, and various others don’t have that. So, to the Underground they took, crafting widely spread out concert arenas for themselves. Literal holes in the ground.
It’s the last place anyone expects to see such a brightly colored Pop Troll, but nothing is vibing right with Floyd’s pursuit of a solo career. He’s desperate for inspiration and to experiment and possibly discover more of who he is as an individual.
The path into The Underground is a bit convoluted. Ominous, heavy noises echo off the walls. A sense of dread fills his chest as the heavy strums reverb deep in his bones. It only grows heavier as he enters the concert area. The lyrics begin as soon as he does, and he’s… not sure what to make of them starting, “My name is Mud.”
Bioluminescent fungi help to light the stage, along with other light sources that were gathered to make the artists visible to the audience. Most Trolls occupying the area are darker in color, generally from grungier music subgenres and derivatives of Rock and Metal. Some are more colorful, however, so he doesn’t immediately stick out too much.
Finally, he sees the source of the heavy reverb making his skeleton feel like it’s about to vibrate out of his body. The bassist. In the blue-toned light, she looks more grey-toned, dark red hair with bangs covering her eyes, her mouth never moving from the neutral expression it’s stuck in. She doesn’t move at all, really… only her hands as she strums such an intense bass line with the drums only making the room shake more. Such a deadpan expression and her general lack of movement around the stage while everyone else was throwing themselves about it would make one suspect that she doesn’t want to be there.

The history of gothic music and the goth subculture is actually pretty cool, because a lot of the time, gothic rock/metal fans were more in the subculture than the musicians themselves.
Black Sabbath - credited as being the first heavy metal band (which has a lot of similarities to goth, it's heavily influenced gothic music, go listen to Iron Man Right Now) - started because horror movies were big and they wanted to make music that fit the genre.
So, honestly, fuck people gatekeeping alt subcultures and claiming that it's all started on pure anti-capitalist radical ideas. It started because people wanted to make music. It started because people thought what if horror movies were songs. People in the subculture determine its growth, yeah. But the whole bloody point of alt is that it's just that, alternative.
My dad said something pretty cool about alternative music to my mom, when she asked why me and him liked alt music so much. He said that I probably liked it for the same reason he did. Normal culture is about conformity. Counter-culture is about non-conformity. He said that in alt scenes you can be more true to yourself, do what you want with less fear and shame.
So, yeah, maybe goth started with people wanting "creepypasta but the [music] version" (/ref), but it's evolved. Punk's evolved. It's all evolving.
