I really felt like making some new Original Characters as minor background characters for the world I created, didn’t share much about it yet besides the main characters on my IG but I love how they turned out, so I wanted to share the first batch here as well ^^

Character Bio of the Asian Pasifika demigod and Afro Latine Native alien hybrid main character Part 17
Advanced Next Gen Mecha suit. 
Helios, Prometheus, or Oceanus a cardinal, gold, silver, & obsidian advanced next gen series mech suit series. A mecha is a robotic machine, which can vary widely in size, configuration, and purpose. Mecha are usually vehicles controlled from an onboard cockpit by a single, two, or three pilots. The mecha is repaired, customized, & upgraded by a small to large crew of engineers, scientists, & inventors. 
The mecha is controlled internally by aircraft or spacecraft pilot controls, voice commands, motion capture, thoughts and emotions with synchronization from the pilot, and with several dumb and simple AI and a few advanced and complex AI assistance from inside the cockpit of the mecha. Mecha cockpits have a single pilot, two pilots, three pilots, or even four pilots depending on the mecha make, model, & series. These mecha are piloted by one pilot. 
Sometimes it has a pilot mode that includes a comfortable leather space fighter or aircraft fighter jet piloting seat and space fighter or aircraft fighter jet controls for piloting. For this mode it can have two pilots controlling the mecha suit. These are liked by former space navy or space force pilots. 
These pilots enter the mecha while on base or on a spacecraft or capital ship by an elevator or escalator that takes them to a raised platform that is level with the cockpit of the mecha. The pilot then steps into the mecha suit which closes its hatch behind them. The pilot can also enter the mecha if the mecha is already on sight on the battlefield by parachuting into the mecha after a Halo jump or orbital drop insertion. They can also enter the mecha suit by having the onboard ai of the mecha control it and lower its hand to them so they can climb on and climb inside the mecha suit. If the mecha suit is in space they can enter the mecha while in EVA zero gravity by using a jetpack to fly to the mecha cockpit. 
Metahuman and superhuman super soldier pilots can perfectly assimilate and synchronize with the mecha suit. The mecha works in tandem with their superhuman and metahuman abilities and physiology. By taking advantage of their super soldier training and powered armored super soldier skills. The mecha suit can enter assimilation or synchronization battle mode with the super soldier pilot for several hours without drawbacks or recoil damage to the pilot. 
The mecha is mainly piloted by tracking movements made by the user's body. The pilot when flying the mecha uses a tech suit or body suit. This suit synchronizes and interfaces between the pilot and the mecha. It utilizes a spacious spherical cockpit for full body movement. Made especially for black ops and spec ops super soldiers. It takes full advantage of the abilities of demigod metahumans and superhuman alien hybrids. Pilots essentially become at one with the unit. Acting as the avatar for the mecha's actions and the receptor of any activity to the mecha in return. The pilot also wears a helmet that interfaces and synchronizes their thoughts and emotions with the mecha. Allowing them to command the mecha by their voice as well as conscious and unconscious thoughts and emotions. This is assisted by dumb simple AIs (who are complex and smart by regular human and alien standards) and smart advanced AIs who improve the super soldier pilots' already superhuman abilities and piloting.
Has naturally enhanced and artificially enhanced abilities. Their body and mind reacts on a superhuman level when piloting. This increases their natural skill and control when piloting. The main character can also pilot the mecha by hacking into the human and alien technologies itself with their technopathy as a cyborg/bionic. The mecha is only accessible by the pilot using a fingerprint, eye, & dna biometric scanner. In the event of capture by the enemy it has a self destruct sequence that has the destruction of a high yield nuclear weapon. It overloads the nuclear fusion reactor core. 
The mecha is personalized with red, black, white, blue, & green alien and human emblems, decals, & symbols on its face, neck, chest, back, arms, elbows, hands, legs, & knees. The mecha is also decorated with alien and human characters and calligraphy. 
Has high firepower. Is heavily armed. Is heavily armored. Has high maneuverability. Has high accuracy. Is highly customized and upgraded. Is regularly repaired, maintained, & updated by a crew of mechanics, scientists, engineers, & inventors. It has a clean, polished, & new paint look maintained by artists. Its symmetry positively affects its balance and makes it easy to control. Its performance is enhanced with their superior piloting skills.
It flies using spacecraft and aircraft rocket thrusters on its back, arms, legs, & feet. The mecha also flies though a pair of robotic wings and a pair of hard light wings built onto the shoulders of the mecha. It glides and hovers using rocket thrusters on its arms, hands, elbows, knees, legs, ankles, & feet of the mecha. It swims using turbines on its chest, back, arms, hands, legs, ankles, & feet. It has a cooling and ventilation system using space craft turbines, aircraft vents, & a liquid nitrogen cooling system to cool and ventilate the mecha to prevent overheating when using rocket thrusters or when using the mechas immense firepower. 
They are trained as mech pilots using mock duels, VR simulations, combat drills, combat simulations, physical training, & piloting exercises similar to power armor and spacecraft training. They are also trained using augmented reality using mecha figurines and miniatures as personal avatars. As a mecha operator and pilot they employ advanced knowledge and natural skill. 
He/she/they the Asian Pasifika demigod and Afro Latine Native alien hybrid main character since they were a child played with miniatures of powered armored soldiers and models of mecha suits based on media of their world. This was given to them by their geeky mother. This was given to them by their nerdy father. They would use these as avatars in virtual reality and augmented reality simulations to play in championship games, competitions, and contests as a video game streamer against other children, preteens, teenagers, and young adults in next gen console holographic 4d games which was ironic considering their future as super soldiers in powered armor and mechas themselves.
It is powered by nuclear fusion reactors. The main bigger fusion reactors are found in the chest and back of the mech suit. The secondary smaller fusion reactors are found in the head, neck, arms, and legs of the mecha. It is powered by lunar rays, cosmic energy, magical energy, natural energy, spiritual energy, zero point energy, & nuclear power. It can be recharged by steam power, water, wind power, solar radiation, & electric power. 
The mecha is armed with anti capital ship weapons such as a gravity gun, a sonic cannon, a positron cannon, a rail gun, a electromagnetic mass accelerator cannon, a antimatter weapon, a mass driver cannon, an ion cannon, a particle beam cannon, & a zero point energy cannon capable of obliterating entire space fleets at maximum output for primary weapons. Each of them are quadruple, triple, or double barreled to reduce and spread out the stress caused by the powerful shot outputs. Has two charging barrels that can be attached to the single, double, triple, or quadruple barrels of the mecha cannons and amplify its power.
Primary weapons with enhanced output. They are big enough to be held by mecha units. They are powerful enough to destroy squadrons of mech units at low output to even fleets of spaceships and capital ships at full power maximum output. The mecha rifles have the ability to adjust the weapon output. At high output, beams are emitted from each barrel to form powerful blasts. Capable of single shot, three round burst, or full auto when firing. The mecha weapons have an excellent rate of fire and a variable output. At low power it can destroy a few mecha suits. Which at maximum power rivals or even exceeds the firepower of capital ships such as a dreadnought, battleship, a battle cruiser, or flagship combined. The interior of the barrels contains alien and human metal parts for superior durability. It is made to withstand the high output of the hand held super weapon.
Their mechas main battle tactic is to destroy enemies from afar with its heavy firepower which has been pushed to the limit. It specializes in close ranged, medium ranged, & long range combat. The cannons have a relatively fast cool down time in between shots. This allows for shots to be fired within seconds or minutes depending on weapon mode. Puts an emphasis in precise targeting in long range combat. Can use frontal assaults that would make full use of their mechas imposing firepower in combat.
It is armed with secondary weaponry. It is armed with laser, energy, plasma, ballistic, & hard light mounted 50 caliber anti tank heavy machine guns in the shoulders of the mecha. It is armed with laser, energy, plasma, ballistic, & hard light anti tank quadruple barrel Gatling Guns on the neck of the mecha. It is armed with anti personnel heavy flame throwers. It is armed with anti personnel light and medium machine guns in the head of the mecha. It is armed with laser, energy, plasma, ballistic, & hard light 40 mm mounted anti aircraft rocket and grenade launchers built into the chest of the mecha. It is armed with laser, energy, plasma, ballistic, & hard light mounted anti spacecraft missile silos built into the chest of the mecha. It is armed with a back mounted ballistic, hard light, & plasma anti spacecraft artillery cannon that fires space navy fleet artillery barrages. 
It is armed with two giant handed hard light beam swords, axes, spears, sledgehammers, etc as melee weapons as primary melee weapons. It is armed with giant plasma beam short swords, short axes, plasma warhammers, plasma tonfas, escrima sticks, & plasma knives as secondary weapons. For close ranged combat they also use the speed and maneuverability of their suit.
It is protected by laser, energy, plasma, & hard light shields and force fields. It is protected by ballistic armored plates. It is protected by a ballistic and hard light war door shield mounted on the left arm of the mecha. This protects the mecha while the mecha is aiming with their handheld primary weapon. It also protects the mecha from enemy mech firepower or handheld ranged weaponry or melee close combat weapons. 
Mechs are designed by teams of R&D scientists. Mech pilots pilot mecha suits. These mech suit pilots are assisted by teams of mechanics. It is customized, upgraded, repaired, & tested by teams of scientists, inventors, & engineers. It is designed for terrestrial, aquatic, aerial, & space combat. It was designed for combat in arctic, desert, jungle, swamp, or forest terrains. Uses active sonar, a motion sensor, gps system, & radar.
They have Zeus, Jupiter, & Odin series mech suits that they personally call Helios, Prometheus, and Oceanus. It is 200 meters tall. It weighs 80,000 tons. The mecha suit is launched out of a hanger or shuttle bay or spacecraft or capital ships using a catapult deck. The mecha can also enter the battlefield by exiting the cargo door of a space shuttle. It can also be launched using a catapult deck of a spacecraft carrier. While piloting the mecha pilot is wearing a tech suit and a flight helmet and is protected by combat armor and a combat helmet. 
The pilot is armed with an hard light assault rifle, a hard light sniper rifle, a hard light combat shotgun, a plasma light machine gun, a plasma submachine gun, & a plasma pistol for emergencies. They are also armed with a hard light sword and plasma combat knife for emergencies. 
In emergencies the cockpit is capable of separating from the mecha and turning into a small space fighter for emergency combat and escaping danger. The space fighter is armed with plasma torpedoes and hard light machine guns for protection. In the event of emergencies the pilot is also able to escape by ejecting using the mecha piloting seat and using a parachute. 
Mechs are part of an arms race between factions, countries, world governments, alliances, empires, planets, & intergalactic governments. There is mech on mech warfare. Mechs settle territorial disputes and interplanetary conflicts. 
You can customize mechs. You can also upgrade mecha units. There are many types of mechs. Such as close combat types, medium range assault types, long range artillery, support types, & command and control types. 
You can be a regular soldier in the armed forces as an ensign to captain in the space navy as a mecha pilot. Or you can be a mercenary or private soldier as a mecha pilot selling your services to whoever pays you for the highest bidder. Completing missions as a merc earns you notoriety and fame among mercenary companies. 
Mecha are one component of an integrated military force. They are supported by and fighting alongside walking tanks, battle walkers, fighter jet aircraft, and infantry. Mecha are war machines. They are essentially armored fighting vehicles with legs instead of treads or wheels. There are also civilian type mecha that are also used for civilian purposes such as heavy construction work, police functions, or firefighting.
They primarily use mech suits as a freelance mercenary fighting for the space federation. They used to fight for the space federation and Terran hegemony in the space force and space navy as a mecha pilot. They as a mecha pilot used it since they were an ensign to a captain in the space navy. They as a mercenary used it as a commander of a mercenary company. Has fought in many battles. Has been defeated several times by other veteran mecha ace pilots. They have seven rivals as a mecha pilot. Shows apparent gratification over their victories. They have concern for the nature of the mecha battles themselves. Is filled with the emotions that drive the pilots that engage in these mecha fights.
He/she/they have a certain knack for mechanics and inventing including building next gen advanced robots, androids, & synthetics. A talented inventor, engineer,  scientist. They even created their own next gen advanced mecha series suits as a scientist, inventor, & engineer. They are a recognized genius and are the principal chief engineer, scientist, & inventor behind the creation of several advanced next gen mecha suit series. Just by looking in the piloting manual for the first time. They have a small robotic droid capable of flying and walking to help them while piloting the mecha suit. They are also the artist behind powered armored soldier miniatures and mecha suit models.
On board the first mecha suit they piloted, an old gen series mecha, he/she/they were able to use and fight with it. In this sortie he/she/they destroyed a few enemy mecha suits at the same time. He/she/they honed their skills and abilities to the point where the mecha suit needed an upgrade and be tuned up to even be able to match up to their immense piloting skill. He/she/they are adept at mecha suit combat in all ranges from close, medium, & long range combat. He/she/they can handle multiple enemies at once. With their exploits in the next gen advanced mecha suit they earned the call signs and codenames Grim Reaper, Metal Demon, Zero, & Nemesis as a mecha pilot. 
They possess superb sharpshooting skill and superhuman knowledge with a wide array of firearms. Even before becoming a super soldier, powered armor soldier, & mecha pilot they were known to score high grades in sports marksmanship, archery competitions, and trick shooting championships. They scored a consistent 95% accuracy in vr stimulation battle tests. As a trained sniper, they know about stealth tactics, camouflage, infiltration, assassination, and has an intuitive understanding of trajectory physics for sharpshooting.
They are great battlefield commander. He/she/they uses their skills to lead rookie pilots in several successful missions for training. As a commander they have superb knowledge of coordinating military tactics and have a lot of battlefield intuition. Leads a squad of other ace veteran mecha pilots. Always looking for enemy veteran ace pilots to test their skills against. 
They have a strong tactical sense. They know when to show restraint and not pursue an opponent too far. They also show adept perception, awareness, & intelligence. They are able to discern the properties and vulnerabilities of enemy mecha suits from a single observation. From there they are able to execute a counter-strategy.
They are at the peak of their piloting skill even while using an inferior older mecha suit. They critically damaged an advanced next gen mecha suit. They are shown use of pragmatic and clever tactics over their mecha piloting career as a mecha pilot for the federation space navy and as a freelance mercenary for a mercenary company often catching their enemies off guard. 
He/she/they have sharp senses and rapid information processing ability. He/she/they have great adaptability in combat. He/she/they have exceptional mecha shooting precision enhanced by their abilities as a super soldier. It became the core of their piloting style. 
He/she/they always try to disable the enemy mechas first without lethally harming or killing the mecha pilot by aiming for weapons or body parts. They target the mecha except for the cockpit. Won’t go out of their way to kill enemy pilots. But can if there is no other choice or when there is no other option as a trained soldier. They value life as a person as a personal value but can kill or injure enemies when necessary with their training. They aren’t naive or idealistic but are realistic and have a grounded perception about the reality of war and combat. 
As a super soldier with black ops and spec ops military training their fighting ability developed quickly and greatly. As their time in combat as a powered armor soldier and mecha pilot increased. He/she/they are a talented pilot with great drive and focus to better themselves in their piloting skills. Is as a one-man army type mecha pilot being able to hold his/her/their own against several next gen mech suits single-handedly and even forcing them to retreat. 
Goes into sorties with enemy mech suits with the support of their mecha squadron. He/she/they is talented and favors close-range combat, medium ranged combat, and long-range combat. This comes in handy due to both of their mecha suit's capabilities to handle any form of combat in any terrain. He/she/they is a very adept pilot capable of piloting any mecha suit. Most so when using their own personal, customized, & upgraded next gen mecha suits. 
He/she/they remains focused, collected, calm, and precise when piloting. They are able to perform many difficult flight maneuvers and battle maneuvers in mock duels, VR simulations, augmented reality, physical training, and real combat situations.  As a mecha suit pilot they are also excellent and highly skilled. 
He/she/they quickly adapts and improvises to sudden changes in environment conditions such as arctic, desert, jungle, forest, swamp, mountain, volcanic, aerial atmospheric combat, or even zero gravity space combat. They also adapt and improvise to sudden changes in opponents' tactics, read their thoughts and movements, and are able to predict their next attack. 
They are a skilled fighter who excels in precision. They are capable of dodging volleys of missiles head-on. They are even flying close to them. Almost touching them in flight without setting them off. In mecha suit battles, they are good at high-speed maneuvering honed from their experience piloting aircraft and spacecraft.
Has the capacity to use covers, the environment, or even the terrain to their advantage. Even if all of their weapons have been incapacitated.  They will still manage to weaponize the other abilities of their mecha itself as well. As a mecha pilot and operator they have tactical skill and make use of their surroundings, cover, & the environment in combat. They are an experienced officer and extraordinary tactician. He/she/they are also a cunning strategist and tactician. Managing to outsmart many of their enemies, even when they are not piloting a mobile suit.
They use the droid and dumb and simple AIs to analyze the opponent to provide navigational and tactical data during battle while they pilot the mecha suit. These droids also pilot small unmanned drones to fight enemy spacecraft, aircraft, or tanks so the mecha pilot can focus on fighting enemy mecha suits. The droids and dumb AIs also complete tasks for the mecha pilot when they are piloting.  
After being unofficially trained by veteran ace pilots Fumiyoko Sakagawa a metahuman ace mecha pilot of the space navy and her wife Kira Nova a superhuman alien ace of the Andromeda Empire space force they honed their piloting skills. 
Before becoming a full-fledged pilot they had undergone official training at the military mecha piloting academy. It was there that they showed natural talent as a mecha pilot ranking 1st in mecha suit piloting. Their bold leadership style and leadership skills which they are well known for was developed at the military mecha piloting academy. They had natural experience as a pilot and high scores at the academy. As a mecha pilot they are very mindful of their situation. They are always aware of the status of both their opponent's mecha and their own mecha. 
By manipulating space particles, it can alter and absorb enemy cannon attacks through the shields, forcefield, & arm mounted shield. Has a ballistic and hard light war door shield mounted on the mechas left arm that has the ability to absorb and nullify mecha cannon weaponry. The absorbed space particles can be used later. When deployed a spherical hard light, plasma, laser, energy shield and spherical forcefield, capable of absorbing enemy mecha cannon attacks, surrounds the mecha suit. It then redirects and doubles the attacks back at the enemies. Uses a system where space particles permeate its mecha frame increasing its output at an accelerated rate. 
They have an ability to perfectly synchronize with their mecha suits. They, as a bionic and cyborg, communicate directly with the AIs of the mecha and the mecha itself directly when piloting. Super soldier pilots unifies their senses with the mecha itself. A drawback is the endurance and stamina of the pilot is consumed and needs to be recovered. Takes advantage of their knowledge of human, alien, & divine hand to hand and melee martial arts. Uses the output of the mecha to deliver devastating opening moves and devastating finishing moves on enemy  mecha suits. Uses space particle emissions to triple mecha suit stats and abilities. This also boosted their fighting abilities by 120% and made them virtually unstoppable.
The mecha suit is installed with a system to maximize its space particle emission. The transparent sapphire, amethyst, crimson, gold, & emerald parts are for storing particles for later emission. More of them are hidden below the armor. Normally, these particles are used for enhancing the mechas close combat, medium range, and long ranged attacks. When they assimilate with the mecha suit its performance improves by more than five times. When activated the parts blaze gold, silver, crimson, & sapphire with celestial, stellar, primordial, & cosmic elemental powers. All the particles stored in the suit can be released at once causing the entire mecha suit to be engulfed in cosmic, primordial, & divine flames, lightning, wind, & ice.
The mecha suit customized, upgraded and updated many times to go from worthless, common, uncommon, unique, exotic, rare, epic, legendary, arcane, mythical, blessed, & even divine rarity.

Solar Orbiter solves magnetic switchback mystery With data from its closest pass of the sun yet, the ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter spacecraft has found compelling clues as to the origin of magnetic switchbacks, and points towards how their physical formation mechanism might help accelerate the solar wind. Solar Orbiter has made the first ever remote sensing observation consistent with a magnetic phenomenon called a solar switchback—sudden and large deflections of the solar wind's magnetic field. The new observation provides a full view of the structure, in this case confirming it has an S-shaped character, as predicted. Furthermore, the global perspective provided by the Solar Orbiter data indicates that these rapidly changing magnetic fields can have their origin near the surface of the sun. While a number of spacecraft have flown through these puzzling regions before, in situ data only allow for a measurement at a single point and time. Consequently, the structure and shape of the switchback has to be inferred from plasma and magnetic field properties measured at one point. When the German-US Helios 1 and 2 spacecraft flew close to the sun in the mid 1970s, both probes recorded sudden reversals of the sun's magnetic field. These mysterious reversals were always abrupt and always temporary, lasting from a few seconds to a number of hours before the magnetic field switched back to its original direction. These magnetic structures were also probed at much larger distances from the sun by the Ulysses spacecraft in the late 1990s. Instead of a third the Earth's orbital radius from the sun, where the Helios missions made their closest pass, Ulysses operated mostly beyond the Earth's orbit. Their number rose dramatically with the arrival of NASA's Parker Solar Probe in 2018. This clearly indicated that the sudden magnetic field reversals are more numerous close to the sun, and led to the suggestion that they were caused by S-shaped kinks in the magnetic field. This puzzling behavior earned the phenomenon the name of switchbacks. A number of ideas were proposed as to how these might form. On March 25, 2022, Solar Orbiter was just a day away from a close pass of the sun—bringing it within the orbit of planet Mercury—and its Metis instrument was taking data. Metis blocks out the bright glare of light from the sun's surface and takes pictures of the sun's outer atmosphere, known as the corona. The particles in the corona are electrically charged and follow the sun's magnetic field lines out into space. The electrically charged particles themselves are called a plasma. At around 20:39 UT, Metis recorded an image of the solar corona that showed a distorted S-shaped kink in the coronal plasma. To Daniele Telloni, National Institute for Astrophysics–Astrophysical Observatory of Torino, Italy, it looked suspiciously like a solar switchback. Comparing the Metis image, which had been taken in visible light, with a concurrent image taken by Solar Orbiter's Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) instrument, he saw that the candidate switchback was taking place above an active region cataloged as AR 12972. Active regions are associated with sunspots and magnetic activity. Further analysis of the Metis data showed that the speed of the plasma above this region was very slow, as would be expected from an active region that has yet to release its stored energy. Daniele instantly thought this resembled a generating mechanism for the switchbacks proposed by Prof. Gary Zank, University of Alabama in Huntsville, U.S. The theory looked at the way different magnetic regions near the surface of the sun interact with each other. Close to the sun, and especially above active regions, there are open and closed magnetic field lines. The closed lines are loops of magnetism that arch up into the solar atmosphere before curving round and disappearing back into the sun. Very little plasma can escape into space above these field lines and so the speed of the solar wind tends to be slow here. Open field lines are the reverse, they emanate from the sun and connect with the interplanetary magnetic field of the Solar System. They are magnetic highways along which the plasma can flow freely, and give rise to the fast solar wind. Daniele and Gary proved that switchbacks occur when there is an interaction between a region of open field lines and a region of closed field lines. As the field lines crowd together, they can reconnect into more stable configurations. Rather like cracking a whip, this releases energy and sets an S-shaped disturbance traveling off into space, which a passing spacecraft would record as a switchback. According to Gary Zank, who proposed one of the theories for the origin of switchbacks, "The first image from Metis that Daniele showed suggested to me almost immediately the cartoons that we had drawn in developing the mathematical model for a switchback. Of course, the first image was just a snapshot and we had to temper our enthusiasm until we had used the excellent Metis coverage to extract temporal information and do a more detailed spectral analysis of the images themselves. The results proved to be absolutely spectacular." Together with a team of other researchers, they built a computer model of the behavior, and found that their results bore a striking resemblance to the Metis image, especially after they included calculations for how the structure would elongate during its propagation outwards through the solar corona. "I would say that this first image of a magnetic switchback in the solar corona has revealed the mystery of their origin" says Daniele, whose results are published in a paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. In understanding switchbacks, solar physicists may also be taking a step toward understanding the details of how the solar wind is accelerated and heated away from the sun. This is because when spacecraft fly through switchbacks, they often register a localized acceleration of the solar wind. The next step is to try to statistically link switchbacks observed in situ with their source regions on the sun," says Daniele. In other words, to have a spacecraft fly through the magnetic reversal and be able to see what's happened on the solar surface. This is exactly the kind of linkage science that Solar Orbiter was designed to do, but it does not necessarily mean that Solar Orbiter needs to fly through the switchback. It could be another spacecraft, such as Parker Solar Probe. As long as the in-situ data and remote sensing data is concurrent, Daniele can perform the correlation. "This is exactly the kind of result we were hoping for with Solar Orbiter," says Daniel Müller, ESA Project Scientist for Solar Orbiter. "With every orbit, we obtain more data from our suite of ten instruments. Based on results like this one, we will fine-tune the observations planned for Solar Orbiter's next solar encounter to understand the way in which the sun connects to the wider magnetic environment of the Solar System. This was Solar Orbiter's very first close pass to the sun, so we expect many more exciting results to come." Solar Orbiter's next close pass of the sun—again within the orbit of Mercury at a distance of 0.29 times the Earth-sun distance—will take place on 13 October. Earlier this month, on 4 September, Solar Orbiter made a gravity assist flyby at Venus to adjust its orbit around the sun; subsequent Venus flybys will start raising the inclination of the spacecraft's orbit to access higher latitude—more polar—regions of the sun. A close up view of the Solar Orbiter Metis data turned into a movie shows the evolution of the switchback. The sequence represents around 33 minutes of data taken on March 25, 2022. The bright structure forms while propagating outwards from the sun. As it reaches its full development it bends back on itself and acquires the distorted S-shape characteristic of a magnetic switchback. The structure expands at a speed of 80 km/s but the whole structure does not move at this speed. Instead, it stretches and distorts. This is the first time a magnetic switchback has ever been observed remotely. All other detections have taken place when spacecraft have flown through these disturbed magnetic regions. War was something Yvette didn’t really see in her lifetime. Sure, up on Helios she had the numbers and cost of war, of the casualties on Hyperion’s end that only served to add another tally to the money and resources being sent down.
They weren’t casualties then. They were assets that drove the cost up and heightened tension on the horrid spacecraft.
But that was years ago and now Yvette sits in the Atlas infirmary with an ice pack to her head. She’s got some blanket around her shoulders that’s meant to ‘ground’ her but Yvette couldn’t give much of a shit.
Atlas had nearly been burnt to a crisp. Yvette saw war with her own eyes.
It was terrifying. It made her stomach twist into itself and her hands tremble worse than anything she’d ever seen before. The world shook with each explosion and each quake, the air pierced with gunfire and sky lined with smoke.
Yvette survived in one of the many bunkers Atlas had built in the event of an attack.
It took nearly two hours of radio silence before word got out that not only had Atlas survived, but her best friend had too.
She’s not a fan of how tight her throat feels. She hasn’t spoken to Rhys since the first gunshot was fired. She wanted, desperately, to hear his voice and the crack of uncertainty that always tainted his words when it came to mentioning the war and its casualties.
Maybe the blanket was helping.
The bruise on her head isn’t much cause for alarm, especially not with the injuries she’s seen wheeled past her in the last few hours.
But Yvette doesn’t really have anywhere to go. She’s not sure who was still alive and who wasn’t. She’s not sure she wants to find out.
If things went her way, Yvette would have no trouble going to her large office, fixing the no doubt crooked nameplate she has and resuming her duty as Chief Operating Officer.
“Yvette!”
She’s pulled out of her thoughts immediately, eyes raised up and locking onto the sole figure standing ahead of her.
She blinks slowly, her throat so much tighter as warm palms land over her cheeks.
“Shit,” Fiona breathes out, thumbing away some of the dirt and grime that no doubt collected on Yvette’s skin. “I-I was looking all over for you!”
Yvette can’t really manage much of a response but Fiona, the con artist turned vault hunter who always reads her better than Yvette thought possible, understands all the same.
“Hey,” Fiona whispers, “C’mon.”
Before she knows it, Fiona’s hand is in hers, leading her through Atlas. It’s mostly a blur but Yvette’s seated on some desk in one of the many labs soon enough, alone with just the other woman.
She has no gripes with that.
Fiona’s fingers gently place a bandaid over her temple, covering the bruise that Yvette isn’t even sure how she got. She’s gentle but Yvette’s always known that.
There’s no need for confirmation that everyone was alive. Fiona wouldn’t be here if they weren’t. Sasha was Fiona’s main priority, her very heart. Yvette’s known that since day one.
“Hey,” Fiona murmurs then, her palm holding Yvette’s face. Gentle, warm. “It’s over.”
Logically, Yvette knows this. The only way Atlas would still be standing is if it had won the battle. But the words still make her head spin.
Before she knows it, she’s being pulled into a hug, her cracked glasses riding up the ridge of her nose. It’s awkward with her sitting down and Yvette’s sure she smells like smoke and gunpowder, but the fabric of Fiona’s coat is soft and welcoming.
She doesn’t have it in her to hug back, her arms filled with what feels like lead, but Fiona’s lips purse in her hair and Yvette settles on it being more than enough for now.

We responded to the distress call of Fireteam Jerrus in the Plaguelands, they were under heavy fire by corrupted Eliksni Forces, we were only a few kilometers away and could travel quickly.
Kraken-8, Veroksis (register under Helios-12), and myself came in onto Fireteam Jerrus south of what the Vanguard would designate as the Archon’s Forge. Preliminary recon, as well as the reports from Jerrus, made it clear that Jerrus had in some manner agitated the Splicer forces within the Forge, as multiple hostiles were surrounding the entrenched ship wreckage as well as two SIVA infested Spider Walker heavy mechanical vehicle.
Veroksis was first onto the ground, and quickly re-positioned to a higher elevation, and sets up his rifle to pick off any high value targets within the mixed mass of Splicer forces.
Kraken and myself were shortly after on the scene, and quickly began making our way to the exposed flank of the enemy forces. Kraken was the first to spot Fireteam Jerrus, hunkered behind the torn wing of a Golden Age spacecraft, doing their best to avoid the heavy fire and the cannons from the Walkers.
Veroksis started firing upon the Vandal snipers perched around the crash site, while Kraken threw her two incendiary grenades into the mass of Splicer Dregs and Vandals. I set about to disrupt the Walkers with a Storm Grenade, our combined attack disorienting and forcing the Splicers to focus their attention on us, giving Jerrus some time to recuperate.

Kraken-8 had suffered multiple injuries during the engagement, Veroksis had lost one of his secondary arms, myself having suffered a Wire burn from a Splicer Vandal in my upper Biceps Brachii and Coracobrachialis muscles, rendering my left arm inoperable till Horus could reattach the muscle groups and nerves once the firefight would end.
Fireteam Jerrus had been able to recuperate and cause significant disruption and damage to the Splicer forces. However the intense conflict had attracted the more elite forces within Archon's Forge, and the heavily augmented reinforcements sallied out and started to close in on our positions, not allowing either Fireteam to garner an advantage.
Kraken-8 had begun to show signs of either psychological duress, or her EXO frame had started (for lack of better terms) to glitch. Byte, Kraken's Ghost, was attempting to focus her back to the present but seemed unable to establish any connection with her. Without warning, Kraken froze up and her bio-metrics flat lined, before suddenly returning to the present as if nothing occurred. However her mannerism and voice had now,, changed.
[Attached here was a short series of still images, captured via the armor cams of Tez'sara as well as stills granted by Byte. They reveal a battered Kraken, her plate armor rent and torn in various points, parts of her under armor plus her mechanical skeleton. In the first images, Kraken is seen clutching at her head, her helm no where to be seen, and showing her usual amber and blue lighting. The after moments, revealed her lights now a deep bloodied red, her eyes distant and irises blown out to the max.]
The entity that was Kraken-8 seemed to have taken over by another sentience or programming, as Kraken now spoke in a purely synthetic tone, additionally lacked any emotional or instinctual thought process.
[An audio recording is attached here, only a few seconds, but enough to sink home to point Tez'sara attempts to make.]

Kraken, or whatever was in command of her chassis, proceeded to leave her cover and advance onto the Splicer forces, moving at a pace I had not witness her capable of in the past few decades. The agility and force required for what she accomplished that day,, I am assured in my assumption that she is unaware of what lays within her.
[The report has numerous record logs, both from Baroque and Jerrus, along with dozens of stills and cam recordings, displaying the ruthless mechanical tearing into the Splicer forces. The reports goes on to say that once the Eliksni were dealt with, the entity in control of Kraken had then attempted to attack Fireteam Jerrus, before being knocked out by Veroksis and restrained. A few notes had been appended to the report, by Zavala, Ikora,, and Shaxx.]

When the news of Moxxi taking over the fabled Handsome Jack’s Casino, Rhys couldn’t help but be happy for her and her crew. No one ever ventured near after several spacecraft were pulled in and never freed, and for seven years it sat there untouched and unopened by the rest of the galaxy. It sat until Moxxi had waited for the fall of the Calypso Twins to settle down, and the Vault Hunters who now resided on Sanctuary III were more than happy to help her with her vendetta. 
Now, Moxxi called in several favors. She wanted to make the casino something great, make it fair enough yet rid of the corruption that Jack had sunk into its very bones. Rhys Strongfork was one such man, having used some of her help in his early days of rebuilding Promethea. The now CEO of Atlas, still running around and rebuilding after his own War, had promised whatever he could. Part of his aid was to help reprogram the loader bots, as well as to help quietly rid or redistribute the massive army hidden in the depths of the casino. Only he and those who had helped with the takeover knew of its existence, and it was better left that way. Rhys, already on edge of entering Hyperion property after so long, as well as leaving his growing relationship, did his best to keep his nervousness and irritation on the down-low. 
Unfortunately, no one thought to tell him of a certain doppelganger. 
Rhys had drawn his gun before he had even realized, the other man slowly raising his hands as Rhys did everything he could not to start hyperventilating. Thoughts, ones he had thought long buried, were starting to creep up and into the forefront of his mind.

“I’m not Jack.” It’s a whisper of a thing, Rhys shaking his head slightly to push his rising panic away. “I-I’m not Jack.”
“Then who the hell are you?!” He didn’t mean to scream, but Rhys had thought he would never deal with Jack, not after everything years ago.
Helios enters his mind, and Rhys feels sick as he lowers his gun.
That man isn’t Jack, he isn’t sneering and belittling and mocking his very being. No, this man sounded just as terrified as Rhys felt, and that only made his stomach churn. Well, that and remembering of how he had killed thousands of people to finally kill Jack off once and for all. It’s not until he looks at the man, really looks, and sees the crack of a mask that made his blood run cold, does he remember. Scores of men who bore the same faces, the same smiles, the same dead look behind their eyes as they were sent off to be like the man they were modeled after. 
“You’re one of the doppelgangers...aren’t you?” Rhys clears his throat, holstering his gun to the relief of both men. He gets a nod, and after an awkward pause, Rhys offers a hand. “I apologize, maybe we should start over. Rhys Strongfork, and yourself?”
“Timothy Lawrence.’ The other gives an awkward smile, holding out his left hand instead of his right. “I uh...sorry, still don’t have a right hand yet…”
“What?” Rhys moves to shake Timothy’s hand, flesh meeting flesh as Rhys zeroes in on the covered up stump on Timothy’s right arm. Whatever happened was fairly recent, glancing up when the man gave a slight cough, hiding his hand behind his back. “Sorry, it’s just, what happened? I mean, if you want to tell me.” The other shrugs, Rhys releasing his other hand and taking a step back to give him some space.
“Ah ya know...had to save this whole station.” Timothy gave a shy shrug. “Course got trapped and shit, so the only way to do it was to cut off my hand.”
“Would you believe me if I had to do something similar a long time ago?” Timothy cocks a look at the other, who just smiles and begins to regale Timothy with the story of what he had to do after Helios fell.
Conveniently he leaves out the part about Jack, figuring it didn’t matter.
It’s not until months later the subject is brought up. Rhys has had a long day of business dealings, still absorbing Maliwan and making it something better under Atlas’s hand. He’s tired and upset. His frogurt stand was closed for the day, the coffee had run out, and his back ached something fierce.  Rubbing at his eyes as he enters his penthouse, Rhys was looking forward to sitting down and just forgetting Atlas even existed. 
“You’re finally home!” Rhys doesn’t stop the smile that spreads the moment he hears that familiar voice, dropping his bag by the door and neatly stacking his shoes beside it. Spread out on the couch that had been occupying his thoughts since he left for work, Rhys spies one Timothy Lawrence cuddling up on the couch with a shy grin. Rhys spies some fresh coffee on the table beside him, and he can’t help but sigh in delight at the sight.
“You are brilliant, absolutely brilliant. You would NOT believe the utter disaster of a day I had.” Rhys pouted, taking his tie and belt off before flopping down onto Timothy with a purr. It’s a shuffle of gangly limbs before they are both comfortable, Rhys cybernetic arm grabbing the coffee and downing half of it. Timothy just hums, nuzzling the back of Rhys’ neck as he cuddles the other close. There were days Timothy didn’t say much, a byproduct of being alone for over seven years, and showed how he felt through gestures. Sometimes he would clean up the penthouse and then keep to himself, other days he would be the biggest love bug Rhys had ever seen, almost pleading for contact. It never bothered the CEO, just lying in content silence as some serial played on across the room.
“...Vaughn called today, and we chatted for a long while.” Timothy speaks softly, stirring Rhys from his slow descent into a nap.
“Is he comin’ home soon?” Rhys yawned, burrowing his face into the crook of Timothy’s neck.
“Another month he said…” The way that Timothy hesitates pulls any sort of sleep from Rhys’ mind, the other drawing back. Emerald eyes, flecked with gold are looking right at the other, and the indescribable gaze makes Rhys instantly on edge.
“What’s the matter?”
“...why didn’t you tell me about Jack?” The name, so simple and short, turns the room heavy and frigid for both men. Rhys, usually ready with a remark, can’t find the words, and Timothy just does everything he can not to have a panic attack. They sit there, Rhys eventually sitting up with a quiet sigh. It’s only to move and take Timothy into his arms, feeling the slight tremble the other was clearly trying to hide. 
“...I don’t know where to start, except with' I'm sorry.” It’s a start, and thank the universe Timothy doesn’t pull away. Timothy can hear the shaky breath Rhys takes, one he only does if he’s nervous or scared of something, and guilt starts to creep up at making his lover so uncomfortable. Rhys has to start speaking after quite a few tries, unsure of what to start with.
“It started with a deal to buy a Vault Key.” Nice and easy, just start from the top. “Vaughn and I needed access at one point, and we had found some higher clearance access from someone obsessed with...him.”  It’s better not to say that name, and Rhys just feels the words start to tumble non-stop now that he’s begun. 
“He was in the drive, and because I was stupid and plugged it into my cybernetics, he just...was there.” A breath is drawn, and Helios comes to his mind. “I had to destroy Helios to stop him...I had let him free and because of that I...I had to…” Rhys bites his lip, leaning his head into the warm palm caressing the side of his face. “I killed so many people that day...and after all of that, I killed him again. I had to rip my arm, temple connector, and eye out...god it hurt so much.”  Rhys sighed, his arm still acting out at times from nerve damage he had inflicted on himself due to the event. “He is gone...and despite the monster he was, he is always included among the names I memorized from the crash.” Timothy frowns softly, pressing a kiss to Rhys’ forehead. It had been shortly after he moved to Promethea, that he had borne witness to Rhys’ ritual on the day Helios had crashed. 
The usually bubbly man had just sat up on the roof, staring out at the city with his prosthetic downstairs as far away as he had possibly been able to place it. Vaughn merely made sure he drank something, only touching Rhys to place a blanket around his shoulders once night had fallen. Rhys just screamed guilt and self-hatred the whole day, slipping into bed between Timothy and Vaughn sometime during the night. Zer0 had taken care of the meetings the next day, and the entire day had been spent in bed with every comfort food that could be grabbed from their kitchen. 
“I’m sorry.” Timothy presses another kiss, then another as Rhys just gives a weak sigh. “I am so sorry you had to go through that.”
“You and me...stupid young kids who idolized a monster...and got screwed after his death.” Timothy hums, and Rhys closes his eyes as he takes in the others' warmth.
“I’m just glad it opened our doors to each other. I mean, what were the chances you would give me a chance?”
“I don’t know, but after seeing you smile for the first time, you had me.” Timothy feels a blush creep up his neck, and Rhys just cuddles up as close as possible. The air is no longer heavy, instead filled with a familiar warmth as they just take in each other. 
A monster Jack may have been, but his reign, in the end, had united those destined for each other.

Saturn has 82 moons. Fifty-three moons are confirmed and named and another 29 moons are awaiting confirmation of discovery and official naming. 
John Herschel suggested that the moons of Saturn be associated with the mythical brothers and sisters of Kronus. 
The International Astronomical Union now controls the official naming of astronomical bodies

Hyperion
William Lassell discovered Hyperion in 1848. That same year William Cranch Bond, with his son George Phillips Bond, independently discovered the moon. All three men are jointly credited with the discovery.
Hyperion rotates chaotically, tumbling unpredictably through space as it orbits Saturn. Many of the crater walls on Hyperion are bright, which suggests an abundance of water ice. 
The name Hyperion comes from the Greek god (or Titan) Hyperion (he who watches over). Hyperion, the son of Uranus and Gaia, is a brother of Kronus and the husband of Thea. The children of Hyperion and Thea include Helios (the sun), Eos (the dawn) and Selene (the Moon).

Helene
It was discovered on March 1, 1980 during the Earth ring-plane crossing by J. Lecacheux and others.
Helene, a small and faint moon of Saturn, is referred to as a Trojan moon because it shares its orbit with another moon—Dione.
Helene is named after the granddaughter of Kronus and is the sister of Polydeuces. Helene was born out of an egg since Zeus took the shape of a swan when he raped her mother Leda. The account of this engendering is retold in the poem "Leda and the Swan" by William Butler Yeats. This same figure in Greek mythology was the cause of the Trojan War.

Enceladus
British astronomer William Herschel spotted Enceladus orbiting Saturn on 28 August 1789.
Enceladus sprays its ocean out into space where a spacecraft can sample it. From these samples, scientists have determined that it has most of the chemical ingredients needed for life, and likely has hydrothermal vents spewing out hot, mineral-rich water into its ocean.
It's spray of icy particles spreads out into the space around its orbit, circling the planet to form Saturn’s E ring. Only a small fraction of the material ends up in the ring, however, with most of it falling like snow back to the moon’s surface, which helps keep Enceladus bright white.
It is named after the giant Enceladus of Greek mythology.

Titan
It was discovered by Christiaan Huygens in 1655. It is the largest moon of Saturn and 2nd largest in the solar system.
Titan is the only moon in the solar system known to have a substantial atmosphere, which is mostly nitrogen like Earth’s.
Titan’s subsurface ocean might be a place where life as we know it could exist, while its surface lakes and seas of liquid hydrocarbons might be places to look for life as we don’t know it.
Titan’s air is dense enough that you could walk around without a spacesuit. But you’d need an oxygen mask and protection from the bitter cold.

Iapetus
Giovanni Cassini discovered Iapetus on Oct. 25, 1671.
It has been called the yin and yang of the Saturn moons because its leading hemisphere has a reflectivity as dark as coal and its trailing hemisphere is much brighter.
It has been suggested that Iapetus (like Rhea) is three quarters ice and one quarter rock.
Iapetus has an "equatorial ridge," a chain of 6-mile (10-km) high mountains girdling the moon's equator. Some scientists think the ridge was formed at an earlier time when Iapetus rotated much faster than it does today; others think the ridge is made of material left from the collapse of a ring.
It's named after the Greek god (or Titan) Iapetus, who is a son of Uranus and Gaia, a brother to Kronus and the father of Atlas and Prometheus. As the father of Prometheus, the ancient Greeks regarded Iapetus as the father of the human race.
Geological features on Iapetus generally get their names from the French epic poem "The Song of Roland."

Mimas
It was discovered on Sept. 17, 1789 by English astronomer William Herschel, using his 40-foot reflector telescope.
It is the smallest and innermost of Saturn's major moons.
Its most distinguishing feature is a giant impact crater – named Herschel after the moon's discoverer – which stretches a third of the way across the face of the moon, making it look like the Death Star from "Star Wars."
The mythological Mimas was a giant who was killed by Mars in the war between the Titans and the gods of Olympus. Even after his death, Mimas' legs – which were serpents – hissed vengeance and sought to attack his killer.

“Hey, hey!” Jack interjected. “How come it’s front and center—next to me?”
The sigh that answered Jack through the comm sounded weary. And it hadn’t been the first, nor the last, time it’d been heard.
The days after the assassination attempt had passed by like a whirlwind. Each time Jack rose with the morning sun, he’d woken up to a hunger gnawing within him. It was a bloodthirst that demanded to be satiated and an all-consuming compulsion to piece together the new puzzle set in front of him.
Security had been tightened. Rhys and the loaders could be seen following him doggedly. Even past acquaintances Jack had met intergalactically had actually commed or ECHOed him. While he basked in the sudden attention, the cynical part of him understood that the demonstrations were ultimately superficial and self-serving. He’d find memos around the Hyperion offices of Opportunity advising him to take insurance against further security risks, and he’d crumble the paper into tight, little balls.
All and all, the failed assassination attempt had been spun into publicity story—of how it was only due to the presence of the great and mighty hero who had saved his cohorts. Yet maintaining such notoriety wasn’t without its downsides. He’d been met with begrudging respect and disdain as he spun his web to ensnare the wealthy to keep them from taking the next shuttle out. He’d even contributed his own credits—Hyperion’s finances—to the emergency relief funds generated to aid any victims and to rebuild the corporate offices.
The narrow pale features of his Vice President, Jeffery Blake, was peering back at him through the floating projection. A healthy dose of caution had always tempered the man’s mannerisms—he was ever the epitome of professionalism in their meetings—but even he seemed visibly aghast by Jack’s disapproval in this current time. “Sir…, as I’ve said, we’ve run it by our focus groups. This one was especially well-received—”
Jack groaned, slapping his hands on the desk. “Pal, you’re not listening to me!” He jabbed his finger at the projection, making it fizzle slightly before Blake’s face reformed over his index finger. He exclaimed, “Look. What do you see? Why am I being overshadowed by my own tinman?”
Like every other propaganda poster displayed at the Living Legend Plaza, on billboards, and even back at Helios, Jack had a team of artists who knew the emphasis of every design was to memorialize the Hyperion CEO in the moment of a heroic exploit. Whether the stories were true or not, no one dared to question the legitimacy—especially not after the examples Jack had made out of his doubters in the past.
One thing Jack did like about Blake, besides being a damn good salesman, was that the man somehow knew what to say—or what not to say—to get the best results. Even now Jack could sense the calculating air behind that crafty expression of his.
“No, sir, it is merely sharing the spotlight—with you. Everyone knows that you are the hero. After all, how could they not? A mere plebeian standing next to the rakish, devilish Handsome Jack. It’s unfathomable that you’d be in any way overshadowed.” There was an evenness to Blake’s voice as his words soothed over Jack’s wounded pride like a balm. Blake cajoled, “We are selling an image to the people of Opportunity. The added benefit is that now everyone knows Rhys belongs to you, sir.”
That made Jack subside a bit.
He sank back into his seat, his arms crossed over his chest as he glanced at his android. Rhys was sitting motionlessly in the back, strapped into place as all of Jack’s other knickknacks to avoid having his belongings float around. Similar to the dehydrated meals of somewhat liquid consistency and the various drinks that the Hyperion dietitians had vacuum-sealed into the standard plastic baggies for his flight, the lighter items that he had brought which couldn’t fit into the storage locker had velcro in the back to adhere them to the walls.
The shuttle they were flying in was privately owned by Handsome Jack himself, estimated to be between the cost of the massive space station that was Helios and the cost of at least a quarter of the emergency escape pods that lined that station. And like the compact pods, there wasn’t an artificial gravitational field built into the spacecraft.
The whirr of machinery was always on, along with the crackle of the comm system. The light was always on to assist the passenger in case of navigation to the W.C. or elsewhere. With the A.I.’s advanced autopiloting system, the shuttle was preprogrammed with its destination, removing the need for a human pilot.
Jack had to finalize the last details with Blake about the distribution of the posters before their call was ended. He pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling through the mouth of his mask. Traveling in space always made him feel stuffy, like his body would at any time combust.

Artemis
Greek Goddess of the hunt, forests, hills, the Moon and archery. Artemis is known as the Goddess of the hunt and is one of the most respected of all the ancient Greek deities.
She was the daughter of Zeus, king of the Gods, and the Titaness Leto and she has a twin brother, the God Apollo.
Hecate

10 Things to Know About Parker Solar Probe
On Aug. 12, 2018, we launched Parker Solar Probe to the Sun, where it will fly closer than any spacecraft before and uncover new secrets about our star. Here's what you need to know.

1. Getting to the Sun takes a lot of power
At about 1,400 pounds, Parker Solar Probe is relatively light for a spacecraft, but it launched to space aboard one of the most powerful rockets in the world, the United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy. That's because it takes a lot of energy to go to the Sun — in fact, 55 times more energy than it takes to go to Mars.
Any object launched from Earth starts out traveling at about the same speed and in the same direction as Earth — 67,000 mph sideways. To get close to the Sun, Parker Solar Probe has to shed much of that sideways speed, and a strong launch is good start.

2. First stop: Venus!
Parker Solar Probe is headed for the Sun, but it's flying by Venus along the way. This isn't to see the sights — Parker will perform a gravity assist at Venus to help draw its orbit closer to the Sun. Unlike most gravity assists, Parker will actually slow down, giving some orbital energy to Venus, so that it can swing closer to the Sun.
One's not enough, though. Parker Solar Probe will perform similar maneuvers six more times throughout its seven-year mission!

3. Closer to the Sun than ever before
At its closest approach toward the end of its seven-year prime mission, Parker Solar Probe will swoop within 3.83 million miles of the solar surface. That may sound pretty far, but think of it this way: If you put Earth and the Sun on opposite ends of an American football field, Parker Solar Probe would get within four yards of the Sun's end zone. The current record-holder was a spacecraft called Helios 2, which came within 27 million miles, or about the 30 yard line. Mercury orbits at about 36 million miles from the Sun.
This will place Parker well within the Sun's corona, a dynamic part of its atmosphere that scientists think holds the keys to understanding much of the Sun's activity.

4. Faster than any human-made object
Parker Solar Probe will also break the record for the fastest spacecraft in history. On its final orbits, closest to the Sun, the spacecraft will reach speeds up to 430,000 mph. That's fast enough to travel from New York to Tokyo in less than a minute!

5. Dr. Eugene Parker, mission namesake
Parker Solar Probe is named for Dr. Eugene Parker, the first person to predict the existence of the solar wind. In 1958, Parker developed a theory showing how the Sun’s hot corona — by then known to be millions of degrees Fahrenheit — is so hot that it overcomes the Sun’s gravity. According to the theory, the material in the corona expands continuously outwards in all directions, forming a solar wind.
This is the first NASA mission to be named for a living person, and Dr. Parker watched the launch with the mission team from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

6. Unlocking the secrets of the solar wind
Even though Dr. Parker predicted the existence of the solar wind 60 years ago, there's a lot about it we still don't understand. We know now that the solar wind comes in two distinct streams, fast and slow. We've identified the source of the fast solar wind, but the slow solar wind is a bigger mystery.
Right now, our only measurements of the solar wind happen near Earth, after it has had tens of millions of miles to blur together, cool down and intermix. Parker's measurements of the solar wind, just a few million miles from the Sun's surface, will reveal new details that should help shed light on the processes that send it speeding out into space.

7. Studying near-light speed particles
Another question we hope to answer with Parker Solar Probe is how some particles can accelerate away from the Sun at mind-boggling speeds — more than half the speed of light, or upwards of 90,000 miles per second. These particles move so fast that they can reach Earth in under half an hour, so they can interfere with electronics on board satellites with very little warning.

8. The mystery of the corona's high heat
The third big question we hope to answer with this mission is something scientists call the coronal heating problem. Temperatures in the Sun's corona, where Parker Solar Probe will fly, spike upwards of 2 million degrees Fahrenheit, while the Sun's surface below simmers at a balmy 10,000 F. How the corona gets so much hotter than the surface remains one of the greatest unanswered questions in astrophysics.
Though scientists have been working on this problem for decades with measurements taken from afar, we hope measurements from within the corona itself will help us solve the coronal heating problem once and for all.

9. Why won't Parker Solar Probe melt?
The corona reaches millions of degrees Fahrenheit, so how can we send a spacecraft there without it melting?
The key lies in the distinction between heat and temperature. Temperature measures how fast particles are moving, while heat is the total amount of energy that they transfer. The corona is incredibly thin, and there are very few particles there to transfer energy — so while the particles are moving fast (high temperature), they don’t actually transfer much energy to the spacecraft (low heat).
It’s like the difference between putting your hand in a hot oven versus putting it in a pot of boiling water (don’t try this at home!). In the air of the oven, your hand doesn’t get nearly as hot as it would in the much denser water of the boiling pot.

10. Engineered to thrive in an extreme environment
Make no mistake, the environment in the Sun's atmosphere is extreme — hot, awash in radiation, and very far from home — but Parker Solar Probe is engineered to survive.
The spacecraft is outfitted with a cutting-edge heat shield made of a carbon composite foam sandwiched between two carbon plates. The heat shield is so good at its job that, even though the front side will receive the full brunt of the Sun's intense light, reaching 2,500 F, the instruments behind it, in its shadow, will remain at a cozy 85 F.
Even though Parker Solar Probe's solar panels — which provide the spacecraft's power — are retractable, even the small bit of surface area that peeks out near the Sun is enough to make them prone to overheating. So, to keep its cool, Parker Solar Probe circulates a single gallon of water through the solar arrays. The water absorbs heat as it passes behind the arrays, then radiates that heat out into space as it flows into the spacecraft’s radiator.
For much of its journey, Parker Solar Probe will be too far from home and too close to the Sun for us to command it in real time — but don't worry, Parker Solar Probe can think on its feet. Along the edges of the heat shield’s shadow are seven sensors. If any of these sensors detect sunlight, they alert the central computer and the spacecraft can correct its position to keep the sensors — and the rest of the instruments — safely protected behind the heat shield.
