Jesus Brings Us Out of Darkness
John 1:9 This was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him.
11 He came to his own creation, yet his own people did not receive him. 12 However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God’s children, 13 who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man’s desire, but from the will of God.
14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father’s unique Son, who is full of grace and truth. 15 John told the truth about him when he cried out, “This is the person about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.’”
John 8:12 Later on, Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. The one who follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” — John 1:9-15 and John 8:12 | International Standard Version (ISV) The International Standard Version of the Holy Bible Copyright © 1995-2014 by ISV Foundation. Light It Up
Picture it: a big city with tall buildings, a hilltop village surrounded by vibrant farms, an oceanside community on top of a giant bluff. Cities are impressive on their own, but they’re undeniably radiant when they’re high upon a hill. And, they’re extra brilliant when they’re saturated with light.
Speaking to the crowds and His disciples in His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus told them: “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” Matthew 5:14 NLT
As He continued with His message, Jesus explained, like a city on a hill or a lamp on a stand, “Let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew‬ ‭5:16‬) Jesus often used metaphors to get people thinking, so here are six things to consider as you reflect on that verse:
1. It’s all His. We are only a light when we have the light—His light—shining through us. Anything good is first given by Him, and this should empower us with humble confidence.
2. We’re chosen. We can’t do anything to earn the honor and responsibility of being a light-reflector. It’s a title that’s given to us, because it should be truth that’s self-evident.
3. Don’t hide it. God’s light inside of us cannot be hidden. When we’re truly following Him, it is obvious and undeniable. So we can boldly and unashamedly shine brightly for Him.
4. Light it up. While we don’t want the world around us to grow darker and darker, the Bible teaches that it’s inevitable. And yet—His light will shine best in the dark.
5. No more darkness. Christ followers are meant to be a beacon of light, illuminating God’s truth and shining His love. Whoever follows Jesus will never walk in darkness (John 8:12).
6. Compelled to worship. The purpose of carrying this light isn’t to draw attention to ourselves, but to compel others to worship God. The global Church is meant to be the brightest light the world has ever seen, and you get to be part of that city, the Church.
Though the sun may sink beneath the horizon and the world may become increasingly dark, the glory of such a city cannot be missed.
What about this message stands out to you? How can you be a city on a hilltop today?

What Do You Have as Reminders?
What Do You Have as Reminders?
So I have several different and beloved crosses that my husband gave me. I wear them often – especially the one that was his. They are my “bumper stickers”. I want to be known as a Christian. Seeing the cross, just might cause someone to ask me to pray with them about something. Those crosses hold me accountable for my daily actions. That sounds so weak. I shouldn’t need a bumper sticker because…

Bowen's Daily Meditations

Devotional for May 13th
"I am the light of the world." - John 8:12
What a wonderful consciousness was this for one that saw his life gliding rapidly away in an obscure corner of the world, among a despised class of persons, and knew that a cross was prepared for him at the capital. Knowing that the light of life is to go forth from him, from him alone, to all nations, peoples, and languages, how admirable is the quiet, unhasting humility that enables him to sit down among the poorest and meanest of earth, occupy himself with all their cares and solicitudes, heal their diseases, correct their errors, embrace their infant children, partake of their humble meals, and listen in their synagogues! He knew that he was to be the sun of all the world, bathe the continents in light, and create new heavens and new earth for the more effectual manifestation of his unimagined glory. Yet he could converse in a strain of perfect tranquility with the Samaritan woman at the well, and could go about Jerusalem looking for the poor man whom the -Pharisees had put out of the synagogue.
This is something that should never be forgotten when we read the Gospel; and the wonder is that it does not more attract the attention of men. The evidence of Christ’s humility and contentedness of spirit, rests upon the surest foundation; all his actions and his mode of life declare that he was at home among the poor and needy of earth, and sought not great things for himself; but there drop from his lips at times, expressions that indicate the perfect and abiding consciousness that he is to sit down upon the throne of this world, and fill it with the effulgence beaming from his countenance. Before the high priest and Pilate he was as a lamb led to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb so he opened not his mouth; and it was only with the greatest difficulty that they could force him once to speak and to disclose the sublime consciousness that was in him, by a reference to his future coming in the clouds of heaven and in the glory of God, to take complete possession of the world.
