How the Nazis destroyed the queer and trans culture of Berlin
Tumblr media
Given the current anti-trans hysteria found among TERFs and the far right, it is important to remember the history of the LGBTQ community. Berlin had once a thriving queer culture, with a research institute that studied and helped queer and transgender people.
Michael Lombardi-Nash has taken the time to translate all the central works of the German LGBTQ movement before the Nazi takeover, including the researcher and activis Magnus Hirschfeld's research on gay and trans people. Why is this important? Because that anti-trans movement is trying to get people to believe that being transgender is a new thing. It is not, and the texts and stories from Germany in the early 20th century prove it.
Magnus Hirschfeld was a gay activist, feminist, scientist and founder of the Institute for Sexual Research in Berlin (1919-1933). His support for both gay and trans people was radical and innovative.
The institute was essential in the LGBTQ struggle of the time, and his thinking continue to influence our understanding of queer and trans lives.
Magnus is the one with the glasses in the photo above.
In 1933 the Nazis took over Germany, and they started attacking the LGBTQ community straight away. They sacked Hirschfeld's institute, arguing that being gay or trans was against Germanic ideals. They burned most of the institute's book collection.
As you can see from the photo below, some of the posters they destroyed are of Lili Elbe, a Danish painter and trans woman who got gender-affirming surgery in Berlin.

“Far be it from me to want to turn to fascism,” a French councilor said before the war, “but...we have to agree that in some things those regimes have sometimes done good…"
He continued: "One day Hitler and Mussolini woke up and said, ‘Honestly, the scandal has gone on long enough’ … And … the inverts … were chased out of Germany and Italy the very next day.”" "Invert" refers to both gay and trans people.
Now Putin, the American far right and the TERFs want to “eradicate transgenderism”. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

Tweet from Lombardi-Nash:
“I translate German books from the Early Gay Rights Movement for activists in #sociology, #anthropology and history to inspire and improve understanding and historical accuracy. #LGBThistory #LGBThealth "Clear and very readable translations" --H. Kennedy”

Trumpeter Ernestine 'Tiny' Davis and saxophonist Willie Mae 'Rabbit' Wong traveling with the International Sweethearts on a European USO tour. Davis was a member of The International Sweethearts of Rhythm band. They were the first interracial women's band in the United States. Founded in Mississippi, The Sweethearts did not get as much exposure to mainstream audiences in the South as the all-white, male big bands of their day because of their racial make-up and the atmosphere of violent racism in that region. When they did tour the Deep South, the three or four white women in the group would paint their faces dark so the police would not remove them from the bandstand and arrest them Tiny was with her partner, drummer Ruby Lucas for 40 years. Have vou heard of Harry Allen before? To celebrate LGBTQIA+ History month in the USA I wanted to tell you about Harry Allen (last name also Livingston) who was born on Dec 27th 1882 in Seattle, Washington. It sounds like Harry had quite a difficult time being trans and not wealthy. He was apparently 'the subject of ongoing sensationalist local and national newspaper coverage from 1900 until his death in 1922. The newspapers covered his petty crimes associated with life on the margins of society such as burglary, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, and vagrancy. He was also arrested after being involved in bar fights, and for drunkenness! (source: Wiki) Apparently Harry Allen 'Worked many kinds of jobs, such as waiter, hotel clerk, bartender, bouncer, ship-hand, and cowhand. He was an aspiring prize fighter and a skilled boxer. Whenever the police made attempts to arrest Allen, he would fight back and officers had to wrestle him into handcuffs. Sometimes he used street-fighting tactics such as biting officers' hands and throwing rocks! Allen was certainly not perfect, but was supported by his mother and allowed to dress in masculine clothing from an early age. It gives great comfort to hear about trans people throughout time. This is a part of a series of trans people in previous centuries. Jean-Michel Basquiat was an influential American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side of Manhattan during the late 1970s, where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop music culture.

Anyone who calls lgbtq+ folks “gr👀mers” deserves to be confronted with the fact that this was a Nazi talking point. Among the first books targeted for burning by the Nazis were about gender and sexuality, including the groundbreaking work of gay Jewish doctor Magnus Hirschfeld (pictured in photo 2 having a Christmas party with his transgender friends). It’s unclear if anyone repeating this lie will care about this being a well-worn fascist talking point, but nonetheless it’s imperative that respond to attacks on lgbtq identity. They are the opening salvo of fascism. Christofascists would rather lgbtq+ people live in fear because then they can go back to their children believing there’s no future for them if they are lgbtq+ themselves. To them, “gr👀ming” is simply knowing that lgbtq people exist and can live happy, normal lives. #nazis #fascism #christofascism #rightwing #homophobia #gender #humansexuality #lgbtq #lgbt #lgbtqia #weimargermany #magnushirschfeld #transhistory #transgender #gayhistory #lgbthistory #queerhistory #transphobia #propaganda #jewishhistory #shoah #holocaust #nazism #gop #republican #trumpism https://www.instagram.com/p/ChU4aLguz4k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I was recently reading about the gallae, the transgender Roman priestesses of the goddess Cybele, and it blows my mind how utterly ridiculous cis people are when they write about us - even the ones who don't openly hate us. . The gallae castrated themselves and lived as women their entire lives, it's about as unambiguously trans as anything you'll find in the ancient world. So why do cis writers have such a hard time calling it as such? . One of the cis writers I read interpreted them as wanting to be free of the pressure of a male social role. Which, lol. Just lol. . Another said that a few of them might have felt trans, but they were probably mostly cis men who FELT THE SPIRITUAL CALL TO CYBELE. . And I'm sorry but never in the history of humanity has a cis man ever felt so religious that he castrated himself and lived as a woman. Never. . So why is that the default? . Why is it SO hard for cis people to believe that transness has always existed? . Why do otherwise intelligent, respectable writers and researchers tie themselves in knots to wave away transness that's more than a couple dozen years old? . . . . . #transhistory #transgenderhistory #lgbthistory #queerhistory #transbeauty #transwomen #transgirls #transgirlsrock #transgendergirl #transgenders #transgenderpride🌈 #transgenderfemale #transgenderwomen #transgenderawareness #transgendercommunity #transwriter #writersofig #writersofinstagram #writersden #queerlove #queerwomen #queerfemme #queergirl #lgbtaccount #lgbtq2s #queerwriters #transwoman #transwriters #transgirlsarerealgirls #transmotivation https://www.instagram.com/p/CeoLuGQuoyK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Trans people in history 🏳️‍⚧️🌟 Chevalier D’Eon has been recognised by modern historians as trans, but there are also reports that indicate they might’ve been intersex as well. Regardless, they were a remarkable queer person in history. D’Eon was raised as a girl until about age 6 or 7, and then continued on as a boy as a condition of their father, Louis d’Éon de Beaumont, being able to inherit from his in-laws. Questions about Chevalier’s gender existed long before she started dressing as a woman in public. After being sent to England in 1762, rumours circulated about her true gender, and betting on whether she was male or female even made it to the London Stock Exchange. D’Eon tried to return home to France, from where she had been exiled by some unfortunate diplomatic intrigues. King Louis XVI allowed her to return under the bizarre condition that d’Eon dress as a woman. When the King offered money for a new wardrobe of female clothing, Chevalier readily accepted. Reportedly, d’Eon had no trouble at all complying with the terms of the arrangement. Later, when she returned back to England and was not under the constraints of Louis XVI’s directive, Chevalier continued to live and dress as a woman for 33 years, until her death in 1810. The controversy surrounding the Chevalier d’Eon excited imaginations for decades after her death. Her name became associated with trans people generally when English physician Henry Havelock Ellis coined the phrase “eonism” to refer to trans people. #trans #lgbthistory #lgbthistorymonth #lgbtqia #transgender #transpride #transrights #transrightsarehumanrights #lgbt #lgbtq🌈 #lgbtq #lgbtpride #lgbtcommunity #dragqueen #drag #dragrace https://www.instagram.com/p/CpilYKLOhHb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

70 years ago, on this day in 1953, the Mattachine Society's board unanimously agreed to issuing a statement opposing the Eisenhower's firing of LGBTQ employees during what is commonly referred to as the Lavender Scare. Part of it states:
"... the new standards can be used to hound and harry not only every homosexual in government and in basic industry, but all his friends, acquaintances, and associates, be they homosexual, homosexually inclined, bi-sexual, or heterosexual... For the homosexual, to be loyal is not enough. The homosexual is required to be 100% anti-homosexual as well... Then, as a homosexual, he must testify against his own decency and integrity thereby making possible acts of aggression against every person he has ever known. Then, having destroyed himself as a person not only to the community but to his own conscience, he is to be tossed aside as a basic security risk by one or all five standards or the Security Program."

So this was a real thing, a 13” toy doll manufactured in the late 70s as a gay liberation promotion. One man spent his own money to have these “Gay Bob” dolls made. They came sold with their own closet they of course had to come out of to be played with. It takes what it takes?
