New Fanbinding! Two fics by KouriArashi

Now that the gift copies for @gingersnapwolves have arrived (and how quick the post was this time, I'm in awe!), I can post about my latest fanbinding project.

I had decided on binding both fics about, uhm, two years ago? XD I love all of Kouri's CQL fics; she's actually the reason I started watching the show in the first place, so it was a no-brainer to bind some of her fics!

I think I did the typset for "The Way It Wasn't" in 2021 but I had a specific design idea for the case in mind and didn't feel confident to tackle that just yet, so the printed version sat around for... a while. Sometime after that, I did the typeset for "Picking Up the Pieces", which took longer because of the photo edits.

I finally got around to actually making the books in May and I'm very pleased with the results, though there were a lot of stumbling blocks in both projects and I'm actually surprised that the finished books look good. XD I was sure I'd case in the block upside down after all the other mishaps, but at least I didn't do that. XD (I might have checked each book like five times, though... just in case. XD)

The books are supposed to be the first in a series of 5, each focussing on one of the great sects, and so I decided to use the same basic design ideas: colour-coded for the sect, the cut-out on the front, the little graphic on the back, same brand of Parisian marbled paper, frontispiece depicting the location, sect logo as title page, same design for titling on the spine.

For some reason, my camera refuses to really catch the foil colour from "Picking Up the Pieces" on the titling - it's a light pink/ rosé coloured foil.

The planned design for that book really caused me quite some grief, because it turned out that the foil I'd wanted to use (a light lilac one) did not work on this kind of book cloth. It's only for using a laminator / hot iron and so also doesn't work on paper with a foil pen.

I changed the colours for that books so often, going to a coated lilac cloth (where the foil works because it's coated...) but that didn't look good with the light coloured paper I used with the logo (no contrast), so I went back to this cloth and went looking for another foil. I tried rosegold which was okay, but then I lucked out and got the light pink one at a local shop.

For "The Way It Wasn't", I used a lot of official art:

For "Picking Up th Pieces", I used a mix of (edited) official art and photo edits I made myself. The "problem" of this fic is that Lan Wangji starts living at Lotus Pier, wearing Jiang colours most of the time and no forehead ribbon.

Also, Jiang Yanli is now sect leader and needed some fancy clothes. Luckily, Xuan Lu has acted in a lot of dramas recently where she wore some more dramatic robes that would fit a sect leader. I had to do colour edits of the robes at times and at one point had to photoshop Lan Wangji into a picture with her. My old Photoshop did not like all of this but I managed in the end. XD

I'm pleased with the results and might make a post with the photo edits at one point.

I also asked Kouri about her fancast for the OC Yu Zhiyi; that was a while ago. I wanted to include a picture of the character but didn't want to choose someone at random if Kouri already had someone in mind. Of course, I never mentioned that this was for the book; it was supposed to be a surprise after all! ;D

I'm really pleased with how the books turned out, especially considering all the stuff that went wrong in making the cases... XD I guess I can say I learned some things? XD

It's always fun if you mess up something on one case and think, "Ah well, this will be my copy then, I guess!" and then you mess up even worse on the other case! XD So Kouri got the book with more air bubbles in the logo because on the other case, the title was crooked. Argh!

I added some ornaments to distract a bit from that. It's also important to know that I'm a bit OCD about titles and stuff being crooked, I just hate it. This was a very sad moment for me.

But that's always the danger when fumbling around with that flimsy foil and the print-out. I'll live! :D

Tomorrow (2/15) is International Fanwords Day, so as part of the feedback fest, here's ten recs from my favorited list!

The Untamed. This is a Golden Core Reveal, not so much fix-it as fix the world around it so that everything doesn't go off the rails. It features Cunning Deception, Not So Cunning Deception, Wei Wuxian being gremlin, surprisingly cool LQR, and more Wangxian than Jiang Cheng is comfortable with. Also JGY has a migrane.

Like a House on Fire by KouriArashi. (oooh, I figured out how to do a thing) The Untamed. A modern-world AU non-cultivators rough 9-1-1 fusion fic. Everyone's a firefighter or a paramedic or a cop, Jiang Cheng gets a dog (and she is a Very Good Girl), Jin Zixuan discovers a new and shiny spine, Nie Mingjue just wants his people to be okay, and JGY gets an axe. It's mildly unhinged, it's excellent writing, I love it.

Imprints by Lisa_Telramor. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Wei Wuxian rescues a small innocent baby... whoops that's a dog. Except even if it is a dog, it is still small. And innocent. And helpless. And definitely will die if not helped. Featuring Wei Wuxian and his dog (!!!), poor mental health repair techniques, Yunmeng Bros reconciliation, and Jin Ling despairing over his uncles. This fic is so cute, I cannot even.

By Any Other Name by ShanaStoryteller. The Untamed. Wei Wuxian returns, but it's Not Right, and in a panic he retreats to Lotus Pier. Also known as that 'Wei Wuxian fucks with gender and then everything else' fic. Featuring Lan Zhan having deeply confused thoughts about his sexuality and loyalty to a dead man, Jin Ling gleefully calling Wei Wuxian 'aunt' at every opportunity, Wei Wuxian bitching about careless baby necromancers, a revision of Yi City, and Lan Xichen being So Confused All The Time.

Climbing Up That Coastal Shelf by Sour_Idealist. The Untamed. A post-canon fic in which Jin Ling realizes _no one_ is keeping an eye on Wei Wuxian. Then he learns what a self-sacrificing idiot his genius uncle is, and decides if no one else is going to claim this guy, he absolutely will because he needs all the help he can get. The Jin sect will never be the same. Featuring the return of Mianmian, So Many Family Feelings, Wei Wuxian scaring the Jin elders, poor communication skills amongst cultivators, and Jin Ling being possessive.

The Sword and the Shield by 29Pieces. Good Omens. A post S1 fic (written when there was only S1), in which Aziraphael is an absolute badass. Featuring the sort of angel where 'fear not' is the sort of reassurance one needs, and Aziraphael isn't saying that.

A Friend of Mine by CowGayKermit. Umbrella Academy. In which Klaus' buddies from Vietnam put 2 and 2 together and get 'that kid on the news is _our Klaus_ holy shit'. Featuring a ton of OCs that have been through shit and don't take kindly to anyone being mean to their brother. It's wild, I love it, I will take a million versions of this please.

Arc Tremors by MountainRose. The Avengers. An old-school post-movie fic where people move into Avengers Tower, this time because Tony failed to hide just how poorly he was doing after the Chitauri rolled through town. Featuring Giant Mutated Seafood, medical drama, everyone gets to be a little over-protective and tetchy (as a treat), and the bots being adorable. I love this era of Avengers fics, I will live here forever.

Shades of Grey Spill From My Veins (bleeding ink all over the page) by Reverie. The Untamed. One of my all-time favs, a What If WWX Grew Up In The Nie Sect fic. Seriously, this is one of my comfort fics, I love it so much, just read it.

Work Day by Saintlygames. The Watchmaker of Filigree Street. So much lovely fluff about two of my favorite boys and their daughter. Honestly, this is just the sweetest. Featuring Thaniel being too competent for his own good, Mori using his powers to spoil his husband, Six tolerating hugs as best she can, and did I mention the fluff? SO FLUFFY I COULD DIE.

There are so many more (for srs, there's at least four more Untamed I could put on here right now, without searching), but this is a good place to start!

I saw your post about "feel free to vent" and god, I don’t even think that I love that pathetic guyfailure in your way, but I follow you and read your posts, because they bring me joy (although I don’t always agree with everything you say) and you’re one of the few people who’s willing to talk about how unhinged, pathetic and entirely deranged jiang zongzhu is. I’m so fucking tired of jc fandom, the way they turned him into something entirely unrecognisable from his canon self, turned him into weepy little bitch with gaping hole for every single "gege" on the block to fuck.

They make me genuinely hate him. I see that oc!jc committing identity fraud and I hate him. I hate him so much. My only content in this fandom is the novel, it’s the only thing that provides me with content. How fucking delightful he is there? I don’t fucking get. Jc stans say you’re a fucking jc anti or whatever the fuck, but no one actually hates jc more than his fucking stans do. the fucking torture of watching your fave being flandarised. their fucking omegaverse rotten brains yelling and crying about his tiny waist and childbearing thighs. Have you seen the art of him? What kind of caricature they turn him into? Fucking twink that will be blown away by the wind and his "geges" that will catch him midair and fuck everliving fuck out of him because uwu he did nothing wrong, he’s innocent, he’s little precious baby boy meowmeow tsundere. They yell so hard about how misunderstood he is, but they’re the ones misunderstanding his character most. They have no respect for canon material. Most of them haven’t read the fucking novel because they HaTe wAnGxIAn sO mUcH, they pick up disgusting fanon bullshit and run with it claiming it somehow to be canon.

Canon!jc would fucking rip that oc!jc in tiny little shreds, torture him violently and vomit on his corpse.

what have they turned his relationship with jin ling into? what are they fucking doing to that precious golden brat? why no one fucking enjoys their canon relationship that don’t lack complexity and depth. Why do they turn him into weird kid obsessed with his uncle? who has no life outside his uncle, who fights "jiujiu stealers" like it’s his full time job??? Jin ling is his own character, he’s going through so much, his fucking family is insane, he’s dealing with bullying, he’s working his ass off to impress his uncle who put high expectations on him.

what they turn "geges" into? they come and yell how lwj has no personality, that he’s just a "top" but then they do exactly the same shit with other characters? they’re genuinely making me hate lxc. I despise xicheng with burning fucking passion. I’m in a ooc competition, and xicheng stans are my opponents *insert squidward here*

chengxian makes my fucking blood boil because THATS ONE WAY TO ENTIRELY MISUNDERSTAND BOTH OF THEIR CHARACTERS AND TURN COMPELLING "BROTHER" CONFLICT INTO THE MOST BORING FUCKING SHIT THAT THE EARTH HAS WITNESSED. they way they just go OMG WWX LOVED JC SOOOOOO MUCH LWJ HATES JC BECAUSE HE KNOWS WWX LOVES HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING, HIS SACRIFICE IS AN ACT OF LOVE, HE LOVED HIM, HE DID IT OUT OF LOVE. why would they entirely erase wwx’s character development like that? wwx’s entire fucking arc is about learning to see his self worth, learning that the life he had at lotus pier wasn’t it, FUCKING HELL yllz literally was comforting himself with thoughts of never meeting the jiangs. My guy literally was lying there unable to sleep and was thinking about how running away from dogs and being a beggar is infinitely better than the jiangs. It’s literally in the fucking book. I don’t fucking GET IT.

I remember one time mentioning that of fucking COURSE, the manhua would erase the "golden core reveal" as in how jc lost it, because ultimately wangxian is the most important part of the story and jc is some guy wwx finally gets rid of in order to digest his traumas in a safer space and find happiness elsewhere because clearly he wasn’t happy at lotus pier. and they fucking??? came up with an AU???? as a response to me????? where wwx comes back to lotus pier because HE LOVES JC MORE THAN ANYTHING WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO very good argument, very nice talk.

I’m so fucking sick and tired, I muted jc’s name and tag on twitter and here even though I genuinely like the guy. It pains me. It causes me fucking brain damage. I want to enjoy my fandom experience, I want to be able to talk about this dudenobody and have fun. I so hate being here, I want to be free.

I’m so sorry to vent like that. 😭

I will use this as a general jump start of fandom griping regarding this entire debacle since this, this right here, should not be a normal thing that fandom has to send anonymously due to being scared of the vitriolic backlash received.

I have been nice, I have been sarcastic, I have been a troll, and despite my initial kindness and patience when I first started interacting with this fandom, I was met with consistent death threats and homophobia about a fictional male character and why I am less then patient now for Jiang Cheng stans. Other people should not HAVE to apologize for not enjoying a completely made up fandom persona and getting bit at for this. By all means go ahead and enjoy a fanon persona, by all means ask for supporting evidence when someone is arguing they do not like a character.

I interact with other Jiang Cheng fans just fine outside of this, they are not the ones I speak of in this. The ones I am addressing are the vitriolic ones that are angry about anything close to being taken as "anti" regarding an in story antagonist that does exhibit antagonistic behavior time and again with leading text and citations. It doesn't matter if he is someone that is enjoyed, somehow it's "wrong".

And hey. I DO disagree on several different interpretations in this fandom, but NONE of them have ever garnered the hate I have gotten in my 3 years in this fandom the way I chose to discuss Jiang Cheng. When told to use another tag, it was done, but again it was done incorrectly, when I stopped using anti at the behest of other fans, I did because hey, it was able to reach a wider audience, that did enjoy the character himself and wanted deeper understanding outside of fanon only that pervaded the tag meant for "Jiang Cheng".

I certainly do not deny his instances of kindness, but how dare I ascertain that all if this in context is not a reflection of positivity for him within the plot he is meant for, no matter time and again saying he has an opening for himself to do better in the future for others that have yet to be hurt by him, or are willing to salvage what they still have.

I should not have to be told I just want to fuck a dude as a "joke" and a comeback because of how I go and point out what he's like in the work. That is casual homophobia and shockingly sexual harassment. Or be told to think of it as a sibling who uses drugs and it's therefore alright to demean said character, or deny the blatant abuse this character exhibits or uses because he also had been abused by an adult.

I do not need to be tolerant of a side of fandom due to all the above treatment and others deal with.

For pride month, I decided to write a Jiang Yanli-centric time travel au/kidfic, fit with genderqueer Wei Ying and a transmasc OC, where she goes back in time, adopts Wei Ying as her son, and goes undercover in Nightless City to take down Wen Ruohan before the Sunshot Campaign even starts. -Send me a ♦ for me to describe a plot that I’ve been wanting to do: oh jeez. There's so many. For Kexin specifically I do have two kind of specific ones. So the first has to do with A-Yao. So I couldn't decide if I wanted her to find out the truth or not before Huaisang revealed it at first but I finally decided that I didn't. Instead I figured it would be interesting for doubts to somewhat creep in but her desperately push those thoughts away because she didn't want to believe it and then everything coming to light and seeing that those doubts were valid. It's painful lol. The other is romance plot with JC (because she's a self insert and I love him lol). In my mind and the fanfic I'm writing they become close friends during the Gusu lectures and discuss the possibility of courting but then Sunshot happens and the rebuilding of Lotus Pier. Once things finally settle and the idea comes up again the stuff with WWX happens and she has a hard time accepting that everyone thinks it's best to get rid of him, which causes strife but eventually they come back around and finally get to lol. This one I know is very very specific xD

Send me a ☀ for me to talk about someone I’ve met through rp: Once again, SO MANY. The majority of my online friends are my friends because of role play. But it would be a disservice to not discuss my first ever online friend for this. In around 2009-2010 I got into the book series Vampire Academy. A year or so before that was when I started role-playing on the internet. My website of choice at the time was something called bebo that no longer exists. Well, one of my rl best friends and I loved Vampire Academy so much that we not only role played two main characters: Rose & Lissa but we also made ocs that were their children and shipped them together. We decided to make bebo accounts for them and one day I found an account that was a daughter of Rose, which would make her my oc's sibling. We started talking and decided to make them twins and my friend also became friends with her. We started talking more and more and eventually my irl friend and I video chatted with her. We had already become friends at the time and that just cemented it. We continued role playing together, coming up with new storylines for our original ocs, as well as role playing in different fandoms together such as Star Wars, Supernatural, Yu-Gi-Oh, Descendants, etc. And I'm talking almost a decade. At one point she and I got into a bit of a disagreement and stopped talking for a little while and I regret it a lot because shortly after we started talking again she unfortunately passed away, in 2019, before I got to meet her in person. I miss her a lot and haven't been able to write in the Vampire Academy verse since.

No one in the cast is right for JC but I do think he wants and deserves a suitable wife so I like the idea of reading something where he's in a relationship. His problem is that he needs just, so much therapy before he can make an effective life partner for anyone. He features in this postcanon AU I wrote and that's a reasonable depiction of how I think things could shake out for him after many years have passed if he's worked on himself. Basically, I know his extracanonical list of qualities he requires in a wife is meant to be humorous, but I tried to incorporate them into an OC while also making her a match for him.

I dabbled in reading Sangcheng because I am a slave to @starwife and like, in theory, many many many many many years postcanon who knows what might happen? And mightn't that be interesting? Sadly I have come to the conclusion that it's too much of a stretch and isn't my cup of tea. Pls forgive

I was racking my brain to think of a JC pairing I kneejerk hate beyond the general 'well, he isn't really compatible with any of the characters we meet' stance and then I realised I had forgotten Xicheng exists. Pause for audience laughter.

What can I even add here? It's based on nothing and it's not even like there's the intelligence of a thoughtful resistant read behind it. The laziest possible pair the spares approach taken by people whose reading comprehension is so poor they think JGY is an irredeemable cackling villain and WWX is a noble woobie. Thankfully it's easy for me to avoid and therefore ironically ends up irritating me less than bad Xiyao in practice.

favorite platonic/familial relationships

I love his relationship with his mother. She's just horrendous to him and I don't think he ever has any concrete evidence she loves him until their final moments together, but what I find most interesting and realistic is that he seems to understand her. He can see why she is who she is, which doesn't in any way mitigate the damage she does but is an important part of their dynamic because it's an element of why he defends her and it contributes to how he internalises her criticisms.

My favourite JC and YZY moment is this:

Jiang Cheng was stuck between his father and his mother. After a moment of hesitation, he moved to his mother’s side. Holding his shoulders, Madam Yu pushed him forward for Jiang FengMian to see, “Sect Leader Jiang, it seems that some things I have to say. Look carefully—this, is your own son, the future head of Lotus Pier. Even if you frown upon him just because I was the one who bore him, his surname is still Jiang! … I don’t believe for one second that you haven’t heard of how the outside people gossips, that Sect Leader Jiang has still not moved on from a certain Sanren though so many years have passed, regarding the son of his old friend as a son of his own; they’re speculating if Wei Ying is your…”

YZY emotionally, verbally and sometimes physically abuses her son. She is failing him as a mother and as a mentor. But she is not failing him as badly as JFM is failing him, and everything she says here is completely correct. And when JC and WWX talk about it afterwards, JC is also correct. WWX and LWJ kill the Xuanwu of Slaughter and no one cares or gives JC credit for his less glamorous contributions. His own father prefers WWX and doesn't even like him, and that is appalling.

WWX means well by trying to gloss over it, but it's an open secret and pretending it's not true is harmful. YZY is also going about it all wrong, but she's the only person who calls JFM out directly for failing his son. Pot, kettle, but there's a reason why when JC is stuck between his parents he ends up going over to his mother's side.

a headcanon that is popular in the fandom but that i disagree with

I'm going to go radical here and say I don't personally enjoy or want to read any postcanon Twin Heroes reconciliation. The novel is pretty final about how things end up for them, and it's my belief that they are both far better off not being in each other's lives any more. It's sad because they were close as brothers and love each other so deeply, but ultimately it's for the best. They both appear to be in agreement about this.

Probably looks all super cool and handsome when he sleeps, but unfortunately not quite as super cool and handsome as WWX.

We all know I'm MDZS first in almost everything, but I'm not a huge fan of JC's hair in the official art. Besides, it cracks me up that JC is far and away the most stylish member of the cast in CQL, and yet there's no indication that it's actually an interest of his. CQL NHS wearing his same basic bitch grey and white yet again while CQL JC swaggers past in his shoulder pads owning the entire world—amazing. How could I pick a favourite? I do like his official photo look though, because the gold looks great with the purple.

No, but there is one now. :) Brief note that these characters are from the TMAAF verse; minor, non-recurring OCs like Xiao Liuzi from travelers through the empty gate will not show up here. Also keep in mind that some characters, like Nie Yunhua and Nie Yunhai, have more significant roles in my modern verses and Tumblr AUs than in TMAAF.

Gusu Lan sect

1. Lan Xiaohui (Xiao-Yu). Wangxian's second child, born to a courtesan called Yang Xin in Yunmeng in 731.

2. Wei Shuilan, born in 736. Her parentage is completely unknown.

3. Wei Chunyang, Wangxian's only biological child, born to Wei Wuxian in 740. She is the reincarnated spirit of Jiang Yanli.

4. Lan Jueying, born in 735 to a pair of villagers who were killed by a yaoguai. After their deaths, she was adopted by Lan Xichen.

5. Lan Minghui, born in 731. He has one younger brother, and his mother is a nurse in the Baoshi. He and Xiao-Yu are best friends.

6. Lan Danhui, born in 730. A close friend of Xiao-Yu and Minghui.

7. Lan Fang, born in 736. He marries Wei Shuilan in 765, and they have four daughters and one son together.

Yunmeng Jiang sect

1. Yu Zhenhong. He is a couple of years younger than Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian, and the son of Yu Ziyuan's older half-brother. He currently serves as Jiang Cheng's deputy and possesses a highly dangerous weapon called Shuaixing, which takes the form of a spear that causes explosions when thrown.

2. Li Shuai. She is Lotus Pier's second deputy and Yu Zhenhong's wife. Her core was melted when Wen Chao attached Lotus Pier, so she carries a dagger instead of a sword and practices non-cultivating martial arts instead of the jiandao.

3. Yu Mei, born in 727 to Li Shuai and Yu Zhenhong.

4. Yu Jin, born in 729 to Li Shuai and Yu Zhenhong.

5. Yu Min, born in 731 to Li Shuai and Yu Zhenhong.

6. Yu Xihan, born in 714. Lotus Pier's current head disciple, and a first cousin once removed to Yu Zhenhong (though not to Jiang Cheng).

7. Zhao Suyin, born in 715. Lotus Pier's first ranking female disciple, and a lost descendant from the Xinjiang Zhao clan. She later marries Yu Xihan.

8. Xiao Yan. One of the younger disciples in the senior class. She later marries Jin Chan and becomes the mother of Jin Yun.

9. Luo Ming, Liu Feng, Dai Hualing, and Li Jiangshun. Other disciples in the senior class.

10. Pan Gaolin. The head physician at the Lufeng infirmary, who first earned notoriety when she destroyed an infant Jiang Yanli's cultivation root as part of a (successful) experimental procedure intended to make her lungs and stomach develop faster. As a young girl, she studied healing at the medical institute in Xinjiang Zhao with Yun Guimeng.

11. Lang Xiyan. She was originally a kitchen maid at Mo Manor, but she was expelled from Mo Village and came into Pan Gaolin's care in Yunmeng, where she became a healer. She is Lang Lihua's birth mother.

12. Lang Lihua, born in 732. Lang Xiyan's daughter and Jiang Cheng's stepdaughter.

13. Jiang Lianhua, born in 740 to Jiang Cheng and Jiang-furen.

14. Jiang Bohai, born in 743 to Jiang Cheng and Jiang-furen.

Qinghe Nie sect

1. Nie Shiyong. She is a tiger-shifter born in 715, and captured in 717 by Jin Guangyao after he invited her parents to the Jinlintai. Her parents were murdered, and Nie Shiyong was imprisoned for the next four years. Nie Huaisang rescued and adopted her in 721, though her existence was not publicly known until 733. She married Jin Ling in 739, and is the mother of several children with him.

2. Nie Zhuxi, born in 713. He is Nie Zonghui’s younger cousin and Nie Huaisang’s presumptive heir.

3. Nie Zhuyan, born in 729. Nie Zhuxi’s younger brother and Xiao-Yu’s husband.

4. Nie Yunhua and Nie Yunhai, minor wind and water gods born to Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue in 770, two years after Lan Xichen’s ascension to the heavenly court. They received the Nie name but are not part of the Nie sect, since they were born as gods and were never human.

1. Jin Hong, born in 740. First son of Jin Ling and Nie Shiyong, and Wei Chunyang’s husband. He is the reincarnated spirit of Jin Zixuan. Note: He has many younger siblings, and only the first few have been named.

2. Jin Yun, born in 741 to Jin Chan and Xiao Yan. He is the reincarnated spirit of Jin Guangyao, and the head priest at the Lord Mercy temple in Yiling.

3. Jin Xiu, born in 742. First daughter of Jin Ling and Nie Shiyong, and Jin Ling’s heir.

4. Jin An, born in 743 to Jin Ling and Nie Shiyong.

5. Cao Nian, born in 739 to Luo Qingyang and her husband, Cao Tian. Younger brother to Little Mianmian.

Baling Ouyang sect

1. Ouyang Xingchen, born in 742 to Ouyang Zizhen and A-Qing. He has three unnamed younger sisters and one younger brother.

2. Yao Lan, born in 741. He was an orphan raised at a monastery near Baling, where he met Ouyang Xingchen in 760. The two married later that year.

MDZS OC: The Spiders — Heizhu and Baizhu

It’s surprising how I wanted Jin Yuehua to be a sort expy of her maternal grandmother that I didn’t even think to give her handmaidens. Or Spiders. Whatever Jinzhu and Yinzhu’s official titles were.

But since I’m school free and have plenty of time on my hands, now is a good time to ramble about the OCs that I made because I wanted more Jiang Disciples and Yuehua needs some girl friends if she’s going to be dealing with her brother’s friends.

Everyone, meet 黑珠 — Heizhu and 白珠 —Baizhu!

First off, their names! I found out that Jinzhu and Yinzhu literally translates to “gold pearl” and “silver pearl” respectively, I figured why not do the same for the twins? Black Pearl and White Pearl. In my head, imagine Heizhu and Baizhu are distant relatives to Jinzhu and Yinzhu so they would have the same naming styles.

I have no idea if these names are accurate to Chinese Naming Conventions but I have grown too attached to the names. I’m too scared to check.

Moving on, to their design!

Like their Mistress, they are supposed to be the expy of their older generation so I went with the same design rules the Pearls had; aspects of their uniform showing their namesake color, having mirrored hair styles, and hair ornaments that also match their color.

One thing that makes them different — which is also included in their personality — from their relatives is their hair styles were much more freeing. They have a half-updo and they incorporated the Jiang braids, which shows their full allegiance to the Jiang Sect.

Onto their personalities!

I just want to assure everyone that even though they’re inspired by Madam Yu’s Spiders/Handmaidens, the two could not be more different to their relatives. They’re loud. They like to cause trouble. They’re the George and Fred Weasley of the Cultivation World. They only listen to two people and they’re Jin Yuehua and Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Cheng is really the only one they’re afraid of.

They hate swimming laps around Lotus Pier for hours.

Between the two, I think Heizhu is the softer one of the twins. She’s a bit of an idealist who likes romance stories and has a bit of crush on Lan Jingyi — to the horror of her sister and Yuehua. She likes to do embroidery on her free time, where she ends up giving most of her artwork to the younger disciples and Yuehua — a lot of Jin Yuehua’s formal dresses come from Heizhu’s embroidery.

With Baizhu, definitely the more tomboy of the twins. Is a fan of ghost stories and uses every opportunity to scare younger disciples with them — if Lan Jingyi is part of the campfire story audience, not her problem. On her own free time, Baizhu likes to study the biology of animals. She likes seeing different kinds of animals in their habitat and see how their bodies work, which she also uses to help Jin Yuehua craft her poisons when they go out Night Hunting.

Speaking of Jin Yuehua, time to talk about their relationship with their Mistress/Little Sister.

So, the two were brought into Lotus Pier by Jiang Cheng around the age of 10. They were brought in from Meshian Yu to act as Handmaidens to his niece, like their relatives from before. But the three became friends/sisters first and Master/Servants second, especially after Jin Ling began to distance himself from Jin Yuehua.

The two act like Jin Yuehua is the little sister they’re forced to look after but still enjoy her company. They’re the heavy hitters to Yuehua’s quick jabs, to make up for the fact that Yuehua doesn’t have the muscle strength to carry the regular swords.

In the story I have planned where Jin Yuehua is involved in the MDZS events, I imagine the two would join Yuehua on her journey to find her missing Uncle Mo Xuanyu.

maestoso (33.1k, ed & al vs. the world, T): time travel orchestra AU fix-it AU in which ed and al have the chance to do the plot of FMAB all over and go about in the most convoluted way possible. involves the typical vigilantism and a bit more soloist bravado than strictly necessary. what do you get when you toss the central symphony orchestra into a coup against a fascist state? i dunno but let's hope it's better funding for the arts

Fire Emblem

goat milk and oats (25.9k, grima vs. the world, G): in which grima isn't as horrible as he could be, accidentally invents existentialism, and is reborn as a pet snake. this changes everything and nothing. the title is very literal.

as virtuous men pass mildly away (4.1k, byleth & ghosts, T): FE3H WIP in which byleth can see ghosts and recruits one glenn fraldarius (deceased). somehow this changes nothing.

MDZS

despite it all (292k, lwj/wwx but mostly gen focus, T): WIP in which wwx comes back a little more lucky and a little more godly and picks up young cultivator-apprentice a-qing, sword spirit xue yang, and fledgling array specialist mxy. features a subplot about dead gods who are a bit too good at haunting the living and themselves and a 70k+ chapter. heavily AU. i subtly but gleefully refer to this fic in most of my newer ones. i am both normal and sane.

to the venerable dragons of lotus pier (19k, wwx & yunmeng sibs, T): mdzs/the ocean at the end of the lane AU. in attempting to fix everything wwx rearranges the fabric of reality. cue memory alteration, convoluted fix-its, and immortal keepers of time. i'm not sure if i can adequately summarize how surreal this fic is and i wrote it.

a sky 1300 years wide (17.6k, wwx & wen sibs, T): mdzs/norgami WIP in which wwx is reborn and immediately becomes a local menace to a small town and a handyman.

places we saw and made and lost (2.3k, wwx/lwj but mostly gen, G): collection of short prose snippets, mostly character studies.

BNHA

brilliant lights will cease to burn (206k, izuku & everyone, T): bnha/ccs WIP where izuku becomes a cardcaptor and makes it everyone's problem, especially his own. so many shenanigans.

enbu (7k, midoriya izuku and his violent friends vs. the world, G): bnha/kny AU in which midoriya izuku is part of the kamado family line, lands a ghost tanjirou, and convinces his friends to terrorize the local demon population.

eater (10.6k, midoriya izuku & everyone, T): WIP in which izuku is an eldritch abomination who can eat literally everything, including abstract concepts and nothingness itself. he's chill, don't worry about it.

love's labour's only slightly singed (1.9k, hatsume & yaoyorozu, G): oneshot written for hatsume mei zine. hatsume and momo navigate the beginnings of a terrifying friendship.

yagyo (8.4k, izuku & anyone unfortunate enough to cross him, T): WIP in which izuku becomes a spirit-walker, treading in places that really aren't healthy for a sane human being.

10. What work was the quickest to write?

A Moment's Quiet took only a couple of days. I had the idea, banged it out (giggity) and posted it.

20. Which work of yours have you reread the most?

Without question it was For What, For All But Myself, because I went through about five drafts of it before I posted, and I keep going back before I post a new chapter to tweak things if I feel it needs it, but then I have to make sure I haven't accidentally doubled a thought or event somewhere else. Also there are parts I'm just really proud of and like re-reading.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

How well everyone reading For What responded to all the OCs. There are so many OCs in it because I had no actual canon characters living in Lotus Pier except Jiang Cheng, but I was constantly worried they were too much or too obnoxious or distracting. So the fact that pretty much every regular commenter has said how much they enjoy them at least once has been a delight and given me some confidence about characterisation outside of fanfic.

This Need of You

He was going to do it. Wei Wuxian knew the moment he caught Lan Wangji glancing at his shidi. A ripple of jealousy going through him. Wei Wuxian despised how the others sought after Jiang Cheng. He was sure that they were friends but then the gossip started about how they make the most perfect couple. From that moment, he’d not been able to stop the dark hungry monster that was rolling in his chest and mind.

“Wei Ying stop!” Jiang Cheng ordered just before he heard the crunch of Lan Wangji’s left tibia snapped. Wei Wuxian was almost sorry if not for the look on Lan Wangji’s face. All sense of apologizing left him. There was no way he was going to apologize with Lan

“Jiang Cheng..I.” Wei Wuxian did immediately detach himself from Lan Wangji. He stood up and backed away from Lan Wangji. The two of them had decided to show their disciples some hand to hand sparing. Something that Lan Wangji didn’t do often but had done so several times with Jiang Cheng.. Wei Wuxian hated it. He hated how it seemed so easy for Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng to get along. It was this hate for that relationship that he’d interrupted where Jiang Cheng had offered so that he could take his place.

“Go to our quarters now.” Jiang Cheng commanded in a voice that reminded of Madam Yu. A shiver of dread ran down his spin. He jumped at the glare that Jiang Cheng sent his way. Wei Wuxian sputtered as he tried to find the words to explain what happened. But they stayed stuck in his throat and he didn’t want to embarrass Jiang Cheng further. He looked around seeing he wide eyed looks and the whispers were starting. To keep from hearing all the things they’d say he followed his shidi’s instructions and headed towards their rooms. However he couldn’t help but want to look back. Jiang Cheng didn’t spare him a glance as he went immediately to Lan Wangji, and didn’t that just hurt even more?

The pain was still in the forefront of his mind as he laid there on Jiang Cheng’s bed instead of his own.The younger man’s pillow wrapped in his arms as he tried to keep himself from crying. He was sixteen and he shouldn’t be crying over being told to go to his room. How many times had he been told that living in Lotus Pier? However the order to leave without being acknowledged from Jiang Cheng made his heart ache as if his shidi had just rejected him. It was a miserable seed taking form in the pit of his stomach. The bloom was working its way to blossom if he wasn’t careful. Yet, how could he be? This was so new to him. He’d only just realized that he had a rather deep crush on Jiang Cheng. And it’s like ever since he’d tried to figure more out about those feelings Jiang Cheng was becoming more distant.

“Wei Wuxian?” Jiang Cheng’s voice stirred him from his rather depressing thoughts. He couldn’t focus on losing Jiang Cheng. It made all sorts of deeply hidden fears try to rise to the surface of his mind.

When Wei Wuxian didn’t answer, he slid the door open to their room. For all intensive purposes Wei Wuxian should be using the smaller attached bedroom but they’d shared quarters since they were children. “Wei Wuxian?” he said in a much softer tone as he saw the other curled up on the bed with his pillow. His back was facing Jiang Cheng but he could tell by the other’s breathing that he wasn’t asleep. Jiang Cheng quietly shut the door and tapped the seal for silence. Just in case there were some eavesdroppers that loved to report things back to his parents.

Jiang Cheng slipped his boots off then stepped closer to the bed. He was able to see Wei Wuxian stiffen as he realized that Jiang Cheng wasn’t going to leave him. “We need to talk about this Wei Wuxian. What happened today shouldn’t have.” He carefully moved onto the bed and forced Wei Wuxian to accommodate his arms wrapping around him. Oce he had a good hold he pulled him to his chest mirroring the same affectionate hug that Wei Wuxian has always given him when he needed it.

“Please talk to me.” Jiang Cheng waited patiently till he felt the other finally cave and melt into the hug.

“I have this…ChengCheng I have this need for you to need me but you don’t. You can just go your own way and get help from others.” He grit his teeth thinking of Lan Wangji. “Aren’t I supposed to be your shixiong? Don’t you realize that for me to be me I need you to need me?”

Jiang Cheng listened and felt the sorrow in Wei Wuxian’s tone, as low and upset as it was. He swallowed, recognizing between the words what was missing. For all of Wei Wuxian’s famed intelligence he had a way of hiding his true feelings in what he said instead of coming out with it. “I do need you, Wei Ying, and I hear you. I will do better to make sure you know that.” he made the promise and pressed his face into the back of Wei Wuxian’s neck.

Wei Wuxian shivered and he couldn’t help but want to see his shidi’s face. He turned around so that they were pressing noses. A soft warm smile on his lips. “Promise?” His hand moved to mess with a silky strand of hair.

Jiang Cheng’s lips parted as he felt his heart begin to race. The memory of their night at the family’s private pier after the festival last year came rushing back. They’d tasted his mother’s special wine from Madam Jin and had gone swimming. That night they’d made drunken promises of how they’d better Lotus Pier like fools. Wei Wuxian had done this very thing, whispering promises are sealed with kisses right before kissing him. He was sure that Wei Wuxian had forgotten but he hadn’t.

“Promise.” Jiang Cheng breathed out and feeling brave as Wei Wuxian’s smile brightened, he kissed him. He could feel that Wei Wuxian was stunned by his action but before he could pull back the hand that’d been messing with his hair slid down to cup his neck to keep him in place as Wei Wuxian blissfully responded back. This kiss was different from the peer; there was more warmth and determination, and if Jiang Cheng wasn’t careful he’d get addicted to these kisses just like his mother does to her special wine.
