have you ever posted your thoughts on Crawford's translation of the Poetic Edda? if you have any of course
Crawford's translation succeeds at what it sets out to do, which is to be entertainment for a widespread, popular audience. The result is that it's less suitable for coming to know what the Old Icelandic says, because source texts really are genuinely difficult, confusing, probably corrupt, and otherwise disorienting. Crawford uses quite a lot of artistic license to make it smoother, more coherent, and more entertaining. We can also compare Hollander's translation of the Edda, which translates it into poetic meter, and subordinates accuracy of translation to the goal of turning it into English-language poetry. It's a work of art, but I wouldn't use it for a deep dive into the meaning of the poems.
The example stanza I like to use is the second half of Völuspá 23/28 (the numbering is different by source). The context is that this immediately follows the mention of Gullveig/Heiðr, of her being speared and burnt in Hávi's hall and her coming back to life each time. Right after this stanza starts the description of the war between the Æsir and Vanir. OIce text from the Íslenzk fornrit edition:
hvárt skyldu æsir afráð gjalda eða skyldu goðin ǫll gildi eiga.
This means something like the following. I'm doing a super close, literal translation, guided by the Íslenzk fornrit edition of the Poetic Edda, and I'm linking to dictionary entries for key words:
'whether should (the) æsir pay afráð [either 'tribute' or 'compensation for damages'] or should the gods all have [tribute; (rarely) compensation]'
I think it's worth emphasizing that this actually is confusing. It's not clear whether the word goð 'gods' means both the Æsir and the Vanir, it's not clear who is providing the gildi that that "all the gods" are having. It's often interpreted to be something about whether human worshipers should make offerings to both Æsir and Vanir, but human worshipers are not mentioned here anywhere. I don't mind telling you that my personal interpretation is that the Æsir are debating which of two forms of reciprocation-based relationship is better: violence or kinship. But I wouldn't put that into a translation.
Here's Crawford's translation:
about whether they should endure Gullveig’s depradations or whether they should seek revenge.
As far as telling a story goes, this is much more sensible and coherent than what the Old Norse text actually says, but again, it's not what it says. Most of Crawford's translation doesn't go this far in defying the source text, but this stanza in particular is better described as a retelling than a translation.
Here's Larrington's 2014 translation (the one I've been recommending since it was published, and which is much better than her first edition):
'whether the Æsir should yield the tribute or whether all the gods should share sacrificial feasts.'
This is far and away closer to the source text than Crawford's. In my opinion it does border on editorializing that she translates gildi to 'sacrificial feasts'; that is certainly a possible underlying intention, but it does not reflect the semantic range of the word gildi. Underlying this translation is generations of scholarly debate about the meaning; this is a common understanding of what it meant here although it isn't universal.
Here's Pettit:
'whether the Æsir must pay a great penalty, or all the gods must have offerings.'
This is probably as close as one can get to a direct, literal translation in plain English (as opposed to what I did above). It's also endnoted with a warning that the interpretation is uncertain. It leaves it about as confusing as the actual Old Icelandic text actually is.
How much all of this matters depends on the reader and what they're trying to get out of it. If someone just likes Amon Amarth and wants to read cool Norse shit then Crawford's translation is probably ideal, and Pettit's is more likely to make them think that Norse poetry sucks and isn't worth getting into. But on the other hand if someone is, say, a heathen who venerates Gullveig, they are more likely to find the nuances important.

Marjie Kennedy replied to the Celtic Music Magazine feedback request: "I wanted to let you know that on March 17th I will be at the Hibernian parade in the Dogtown neighborhood of St. Louis Missouri.  St. Louis has two parades each year because the Dogtown one is on March 17 every year, and the downtown St. Louis one is always the Saturday before St. Patrick's Day (unless the 17th falls on a Saturday, in which case I think they end up both being the same day).
I will listen to your podcasts either before or after those festivities. And this past Sunday, March 12, I celebrated by including some Celtic music and other Irish tunes on the radio program that I host on KDHX.org called Lotsa A Cappella.
Thanks for all you do for Celtic music!"
Tera Bochik replied: "I'm usually driving around doing my patrol rounds as a security guard.
Unfortunately I have to work on St. Patrick's day. (Missing the First Annual 20th World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day parade in Hot Springs, AR.)
I celebrate by listening and sharing about the podcast to anyone who asks what I'm listening to."
Von Rothenberger replied from Lucas, Kansas: "Happy Birthday! Erin Go Braugh! Thank you for all that you do."
Rick Cunningham of Boxing Robin replied: "Hello Marc, Many thanks for including Boxing Robin on Vol 2 of the St. Patrick's Day podcast! Have fun at the gig tonight -  we're playing 80 miles away but at least it's a fairly early gig! All the best.
Tom McHugh sent a photo: "Hello Marc, One of the things I like to do while listening is make pens. The first picture is a Celtic - themed ballpoint pen I recently completed. The second picture is what two pens I recently made looked like while they were still on the lathe at our local makerspace.
Thanks for making the podcast! I’ve very must enjoyed listening to all the new music!"

As one of the youngest siblings, I didn´t carry someone in my lap, but I was carried in my sibling´s laps, so… Even if I don´t understand the feeling of carrying someone, I do know the beautiful feeling of other carrying me. Would I be afraid of the brothers sitting in my lap and basically destroying my legs just because I´m a pettite human being? No, my mother did not raise a coward.
Lucifer.
As the avatar of pride and the oldest brother, Lucifer would hesitate, sitting in his human lap will only lead into tragedy, or so he thought, but she looked so happy and so proud of her abilities that he just groans in silence and sat in her lap.
Having her hands trying to reach each other while she hugs his hips, only makes him feel so proud of his body and of his human, feeling her so close to him, her heartbeat, her smell, if he wasn’t in a family road trip the things, he would done to her.
In the return trip he carried her… And not only he was proud of his human obeying him, something else was happy to have the human in his lap.
Mammon.
The great Mammon will carry you… plot twist, Mc was the one carrying him, he is a blushy mess, while the others make fun of him, Mammon is complaining about his luck and about the cute human that is making him sit on her lap.
“ Mc, you will pay for this” – or so he thought, in secret he loves being a spoiled demon, and just knowing that she trust him over the rest of the brothers, and that her legs are so strong…
He asks nicely to being carried again in the return trip, but Luke won his sit while he was fighting with the rest of the brothers and Lord Diavolo.
Levi.
He has a mental breakdown, he doesn’t understand nor how nor why Mc was carrying him, the only thing he understand is: She has the strongest legs he has seen. He is just thinking about how not to mess things up while he is with her.
In a while he gets used to the embarrassment, and the continuous nagging from Mammon, he is just enjoying the feeling of protection that Mc is giving him. After a while he is playing with videogames with her.
He develops a like for MC´s lap, he will sit on her lap while they´re gaming, while they are eating, even in movie nights.
Satan.
N O, I shall not be carried by MC no matter what she says, I will be the one carry…. *Ten minutes later* he is sitting on her lap really confused. She is smiling like she had achieve her ultimate goal in life, and feeling her hands all over his body for protection makes him blush.
He remembers one book scene and immediately becomes a tomato, if the positions had change… he would be… Oh for the devil’s sake, someone please go and help him. And she is acting like nothing is happening. “Oh, don´t worry Satan I usually do this for my younger siblings, it´s okey!”
Acts like an angry little boy, “Did she just told me small? O she will pay for that.” Sweet MC, there is nothing “small” in him.
Asmo.
He asked MC to carry him, “Please Mc! I want to sit in your lap!” he was acting so cute that Mc agreed to carry him in her lap, Asmo is so happy that he is giggling and smiling a lot, he was the one that put Mc´s hands around his hips.
Asmo is so proud of his human, she has the best lap in the three realms, and even better, she is so strong that she might carry him around without problem (he convinces Mc to carry him and both of them felt.)
In the return trip, he was still angry with Mc because she dropped him, and decided that as a revenge she should carry him in her lap again.
Beel.
He panics, he knows that he is more muscle than fat, still he is heavy, and he might break her legs if he sits on Mc´s lap, after a lot of begging and Lucifer telling him that it´s either him sitting on Mc´s lap or is other brother, he agrees to sit on the human lap.
For all the trip he don´t eat anything, not even when his belly is growling and his head aches, he makes sure that his human it´s fine, and having her trying to hug him, makes him blush a lot.
Usually, he is the one protecting others, but that day he was the one being protected by his human.
Belphie.
He is fine with the decision, if he can sleep close to Mc, then who is he to complain about it? He usually sleeps on Mc´s lap, sitting wouldn´t change that much.
Or so he thought, being on Mc´s lap felt like his time in the celestial realm, there was something that makes him feel comfortable and warm. Maybe that´s why he slept so well during the trip.
Like Levi, he started to sit in Mc´s lap just for a nice nap.

You mentioned the most/least graceful Raouls, how about the Christines (aka the other principal role that canonically requires great dancing aside from Meg)?
Hmm, does Christine canonically require great dancing? Originally this might be so, as little sense as it actually makes - chorus girls are typically not members of the ballet corps, they are singers and ensemble members, not dancers, and the main reason they are so in the musical is because ALW conflated them to show off Sarah Brightman's (admittedly very good) dancing.
It is also the case that Christine was at first a lead dancer alongside Meg, but that was dropped fairly early on, and now it's Meg and another ballerina who are the leads in most productions save for the very old school ones like Japan (and I heard even they stopped having it this year). Christine's dancing has also been steadily cut down, to the point where I've heard it described more as "waving their arms around" rather than dancing.
Within the text too, there isn't much mention of Christine's dancing beyond how it's affected by her daydream-y nature. She becomes prominent to the audience when she falls out of step; Madame Giry has to scold her into concentrating; and Lefevre's only comment on her besides her parentage is that she "always has her head in the clouds". Even the casting calls, like this one for Broadway in 2019, don't specify anything about her dance skills. (Though then again they also misspell Raoul and Firmin's name, so hmm...)
All of which is a long-winded way of saying that, as much as I love a Christine who's a great dancer, I can also see why some people headcanon that she's actually pretty bad one, because I don't know if there's much support anymore for Christine being good at it.
But moving on from all that... dancing Christines, good and bad! Sarah Brightman always comes first to mind, she started this whole thing, and she is a lovely dancer. Many of the Japanese Christines also impress me, and they are training in singing, acting, and dancing. I particularly liked Hisako Hanaoka.
I also really loved watching Joke de Kruijf dance, she always reminds me of a fairy, spinning across the stage and dazzling the audience all the while. Sierra Boggess is another, particularly in the little bits of footage I see of her in Las Vegas, and one of my bigger disappointments of the 25th anniversary concert is that she was not able to do any of the dancing in the Hannibal ballet there.
And of course, there are the Christines who all started off as a ballerina, such as Maria Kesselman, Dodie Pettit, Sarah Bakker, Claire Lyon, and Julia Udine. Of those, the only ones with good, watchable footage are Dodie Pettit and Julia Udine. Udine I particularly loved, which might be because her video is the best quality, but also because she was wonderfully graceful and actually looked like she could fit right in with the ballet corps.
And as for the, erm, less graceful ones... I feel bad for singling her out, but Marni Raab in some of her earlier videos was pretty painful to watch, all bent knees and shuffling across the stage. But she tried, and sometimes dancing is just not one's strength.

Green Eggs and Ham: Here (Patreon Review for Emma Ficci)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people! And I have my first fully paid for comission and patreon review all in one! Yes my good friend Emma became a patreon and you can too, go to patreon.com/popculturebuffet. Even one buck a month helps and 5 a month nets you a review of whatever of your choice a month. An episode of any tv show I have acess to. It feels good to have more than one person paying my salary, though I sitll want to thank Kev, my other patreon for helping with that.
So with that all in order, let’s talk about this thoroughly weird, thoroughly wonderful show from a couple years back. Green Eggs and Ham is modern adaptation of a Dr. Seuss book..... and I bet those of you who haven’t heard of this series before or it’s reputation just had your bowls clinch a bit. Yeah while I haven’t seen illumination’s takes on the maestro of children’s books, I haven’t heard the best things and the trailers and odd and counter productive marketing tie ins for the Lorax have made me want to stay 30 feet away from it at all times. Seriously you get certified Legend Danny DeVito.. and you waste him on “Dat’s a woman” a joke that I don’t have time to unpack all the ways it sucks. My point is Seuss really hasn’t had the best time with adaptations latey.  But leave it to Warner Animation and Netflix to pull out a great one. Yeah I wasn’t too excited about a tv adaptation of one book at first due to all this and even a celebrity cast wasn’t a good sign. They roped Danny DeVito into the Lorax. So even with a whopper cast containing Michael Douglas, Diane Keaton, my boy Adam Divine, Ilana Glazer, Kegan Michael Key,  Jeffery Wright, Eddie Izard and JIllian Bell.. I wasn’t convinced. But word of mouth was really good, and the animation looked downright gorgeous, perfectly mimicking suess’ work and feeling like an unabashed love letter.
So I did what I tend to do.. and sat on it for several years because I simply forgot to watch it till my friend comissioned it and here we are. And off the bat.. the reputation.. is not remotely overblown. This is easily the best Dr. Seuss adaptation i’ve seen in some time taking the best of his ideas and whimsy, with what little behind the scenes stuff I could get saying they specifically took art design from his art of book, with a modern and intresting story behind it and an all star cast that this time around are used well instead of just being there for Name Recogntion. Not only that but it takes inspriation form, of all things, Planes Trains and Automobiles, but does so well so far, getting the oddcouple dynamic down perfectly.
So join me under the cut as I cut this bit of green eggs and ham into bite sized pieces for you all and go into why it’s so delecitable.
Tumblr media
This episode’s mostly broken up into bits to introduce all the main players, so as I tend to do when there’s multiple plots, I will be covering each one at a time.
Guy and Sam: The Failed Inventor and the Animal Thief
So our story begins with.. a ninja breaking into a zoo to steal the rare Chikaraffe.
Tumblr media
Neither was the narrator, played by Key.. and the narrator naturally for a work like this delightfully interacts with things and is one of the best parts of the whole episode. But this already shows how well the series updates things. There’s one or two things like Ninja Sam or a family making ducklips during a photo, there’s even a fairly obvious trump stand in we’ll get to.. but none of it’s SO overdone it takes you out of things or dates the projects. The tech is kept to about the 70′s or 80′s with cameras still used instead of camera phones, crt tv’s, and what have you, and most inventions seens are susian. It feels wholly in line with his books while still nudging it into our current decade here and there. In other words.. how you SHOULD do it: add in a few things here or there but no overt pop culture refrences and at most a take that at something Seuss would gladly take aim at.
So we meet our other hero the next day, Guy-Am-I. Guy is the show’s version of the nameless harassment victim from the books, with a bit of a darker fur and hat, likely to help better distingish him from sam as well as sell him being older than his co-star. It’s a good change, and helps sell Guy as what he is.. a grumpy middle aged man who keeps failling in life as demonstrated by his way to the inventions: he falls in a puddle, signs no on a pettition because he’s in a hurry, reminds me of man in a hurry from hatchefield but I couldn’t find a good image of him saying that in time and takes a picture of the family “Say runing my life” “ruining your life!”. We later see after some of the following scenes Sam do the same.. but he hops over the puddle then dives ino for fun, signs an entire page of the pettition, and takes tons of pictures. It’s a nice establishing scene for both.
Guy is presenting his invention for Snerzco, your standard megacorp given a delightful Seuss twist with LITERAL pencil pushers and beancounters, to present his invention, with other inventors presenting, witht he hopes of presenting to Snerzz himself, having such delightfully bonkers and seussian inventions as a reverse umbrella (it rains on you) and an automatic fingercrosser. It’s touches like this that really tell me the series really loves Dr. Seuss.
Sadly things don’t go well for guy as he’s hoping his invention dosen’t explode, his invention being a backpack made of hands to help people fly. Most people are imprestted apart from Michelle a bean counter who.. randomly snarks she wouldn’t let her daughter fly on it.
Tumblr media
Yeah it’s not a great introduction for one of your major characters to have her randomly mock something that hadn’t exploded yet, and to for no reason bring up what a paranoid and unfun parent she is. We’ll get to her more in a bit. But yes it does explode and Guy’s dreams are ruined.
And this whole picture.. shows who guy is. He’s someone whose kept trying agian, and again and again only for it not to work, and to get laughed at by the public and spat on by god themslef. It’s easy to see WHY he’s such a bitter curmudgeon: life hates him, so why shouldn’t he hate it back. That’s a self defeating prophecy of course but this is episode one and tha’ts probably the point of the series: to explore this. That being said I could see this coming from a mile away and felt it to be the most unupsired bit of the episode.
Guy enters a diner to get some Oatmush “The Sadmans Special” after the bus leaves before he can get to it because again, God hates him personally.  No the sadman’s special is a famous bowl from KFC. I should know as a professional sadman. Regardless Guy is miserable.. and in enters sam, whose fascenated their “Breifcase Buddies” because thier briefcases match.. and unlike the above I like how they call attention to them being identical. We know wha’ts going to happen there but the lampshading helps it go down easier and makes us wonder if they will swap. Sam is a regular, being friends with Donna the waitress and ordering his usual green eggs and ham.
So we get the expected bit: Sam asks Guy to try them, he says no, but the show makes a good choice. Instead of just.. stalking guy for the next 11 episodes to get him to try it.. he simply asks if he’s actually tried it, Guy says no and makes a great poop joke, and Sam leaves it. He apparently asks once an episode, but it’s made more into a character thing; Guy refuses because he hates to try new things outside of his inventing and that’s hit a wall. It’s also a nice suprise that Devine and Douglas just play perfectly off one another. The two are from vastly diffrent generations and backgrounds acting wise, but they just work perfectly together and it’s what makes their interactions work.
Sam does leave it and the other inventors having ALL got the golden ticket, arrive and Sam treats them.. only to notice Guy’s paper and the fact guy failed, and asks donna politely to get guy his mush as he ordered first. It’s good setup for Sam. We saw him be nice and free and what not, but we also see that while he can be insietive (He asked guy what broken dream he had earlier in the scene) he does geniunely care and it isn’t just surface level. He loves people and helping them and getting to know them.
Of course while Guy is greatful, showing that beneath his own exterior he’s not a bad guy just one made miserable by life, he’s not going to be best friends or anything.. that’s a lot to ask they just met and takes his case after gulping down his oatmush.
That night Sam prepares to leave, having given Donna his adress.. multiple times. in the hopes someone comes over and hangs out. Can relate even if i’d never go that far. He does however reveal himself as the ninja and prepare to take the chikaraffe with him for whatever reason.
Guy goes to his hotel room to sulk, not helped by the other inventors partying outside, and full of misery and self loathing throws his suitcase in the fire.. until it makes a noise. He quickly pulls it out to find the Chickaraffe. Will he surivive? I mean probably. We have 12 episodes left. And a full second season. God this is going to take a few years.. regardless, let’s move onto the subplots.
MIchellee and E.B.
We meet Michelle’s daughter EB who just wants to live but her mom dosen’t let her have toys or shenaniagnas.. and comes off untetionally as really abusive. She’s SUPPOSED to be overprotective, but saying “I detect a hint of whimsy.. i’ll allow it” really just paints you as an overcontrolling psycho. Their headed on a trip and while EB wants to catch the chickaraffe for herself dosen’t have the time and her mom gives her a magnetic friendship bracelet.. that shackes her to her. Just... yeah Michelle has made me  hate her in one episode and she’s played by Diane Keaton. How do you do that? Hopefully she’ll get better but hearing about these two characters was part of the reason I procastinated so long. The other is my brain being kind of a forgetful swamp.
Snerz: We meet Snerz himself who has someone bringing him the chickaraffe. Snerz is a cold, mean man with trump hair.. that in this case is a literal being he’s forcing to be his hair, has everything gold plated and keeps animals in a wall forcing them to stand on the other side and put their heads through like he mounted them because he’s a sociopath. And this is the refrence I meant. Snerz has many comparisons to trump, the hair, the gold platings, but it dosen’t really date the thing as Trump has been around since long before this and will sadly probably be around till his inetivitible jail sentence. But it’s not so overt or over the top that it takes you out of it it works. Okay one more.
BAD GUYS:
Two mysterious agents, one old and one on her first mission, go to the zoo and interogate the guy running it holding him over a slapping turtle exhbit. Their after the chickaraffe and depart.. with the yougner agent accidently dropping him. Whoops. At least he gets to get hit into space by a turtle. Some of us never will “Sigh”
Final Thoughts:
This was an excellent first episode. It fleshes out the characters well, sets up the story without feeling too slow, and the show strkes the right ballance of being it’s own thing while still feeling Seuss. It’s a wubusoully wonderful good time and I recommend checking it out. I look forward to the rest of the series over the next year.
Next on this blog: Sleepover time as Shadow into Light, my Lena Saberwing retrospective resumes.

Last Summer (2013)
The film starts with a four-minute introduction of classical music over shots of walls, wood, and other objects. Off the bat, you know what kind of film this is going to be. Artsy, might even be slow. I personally enjoy these films, but I know many don’t. If you get bored easily, don’t watch it. If you want a nice, fluffy, somewhat emotional young romance this is for you. Spoilers ahead!
One of my favorite scenes takes place at the beginning of the film when Luke (Samuel Pettit) and his teacher (Deb Lewis) are having a conversation. It’s so real and shows how much teachers care for their students and make time to listen to them when they need to and provide actual real advice. Of course, not all teachers are like this, but I sure wish they were.
Something that shocked me about the story was that everyone was okay with Luke and Jonah (Sean Rose) being boyfriends. Of course, this is an ideal that we as a society should be striving for. It shocked me because they are in the South of the United States and it’s pretty hard to find a small town that isn't negatively prejudiced against people of the LGBT+ community. I thought it was nice though, a film about two boys being in love without the subplot of the conflict of someone being homophobic and causing a problem.
Tumblr media
There are really good artsy shots and the overall cinematography is absolutely beautiful. Throughout the film, the background noises are mostly piano and a lot of bird chirps. No really, there are so many bird chirps. I liked it. Sometimes it did go over some of the narration which then became a little difficult to hear because of the percentage of volume distribution, but overall it was nice.
This film includes a lot of narration and monologue. The interesting thing though is that we get this from both the main characters, Luke and Jonah, not just one fo them. They are very good monologues and there are some great quotes in there that moved me.
I’ll be honest, I liked the movie but just for a one time watch. I highly doubt I’ll ever see it again, but I recommend giving it a watch if you’re into these sorts of films.

hmmmm
i like to think there are a lot of interesting folks in my family
or there were, at least
well, yeah okay my recent family is pretty weird also
but just to list some odd/interesting/cool folks? i think, anyway. because i’m thinking about it and i can’t research bcs i turned off my ancestry account bcs i don’t have £15 a month spare
uhhh anyway okay
most of these you will know i’m sure, cs i do talk rather a lot of nonsense fairly often
--
because letterkenny has reminded me of the existence of canada-
henry bird, ghost child. the only record of him ever that i can find, ever, is the passenger list of him going over to ontario in i forget if it was 1873 or 1878, but he was 8 years old, and i assume he is a cousin of mine somehow (since he went over with my 4th-great grandparents, an aunt and her neices/nephew(/stepchildren - the aunt, Grace, married her sister, Thirza’s widower, 6 months after her sister died, and who died 6 months later)).
on the subject of Canada, Willie Bird, my cousin four times removed, who became a mountie in somewhere called Moose Jaw (someone who is from there is called a Moose Javian, which is fuckin amazing) in his early 20s/the late 1880s, and I can’t find a mention of him following that, in 1891. His sister Ann married a postman and moved to Ohio, where it seems she fairly immediately died, and his sister Thirza married someone called John James Nicholson, stayed home in Dufferin County, Ontario and named her second son Beryle.
--
Ellenor Moore, an aunt of mine, whose husband Thomas was in fact legally married to the woman next door - they had 10 children between the three of them over 15 years, with most of the eldest listed to Ellenor, and most of the youngest listed with Mary - or at least, they lived in that manner, according to the 1891 census, although the youngest two, the same age, had swapped residence according to their baptisms - John was baptised to Ellenor but lived with Mary on the census, and Selena was baptised to Mary but lived with Ellenor. I couldn’t find baptism records for most of the elder children, however. Of course I don’t know their lives or their reasonings, but I like to think they were happy, living in such a way, even in 1870s-1890s(etc) rural Lancashire.
Alfred Wyatt Pettit, my 3rd-great grandfather, the cheesemonger apprentice turned coachman - turned tram driver, turned omnibus driver, turned omnibus conductor. He really must’ve hated cheese - or just really liked these new motor cars, I suppose!
Redvers Madge, my 3rd great uncle. He just has a funny name, tbh. I’m not at all surprised he went by Henry. Jack, why on earth would you do that to your youngest son?? The rest of them had normal names, f god’s sake.
On the subject of odd names, tho - Thirza Bird, Devereaux Aland, Wyndham Evans (on my father’s side), Wyndham Madge (on my mother’s side), Mark Darke, Horatio Fox... A set of sisters all called variations on Mary - Mary, Maria, May - with Elizabeth and Charles the youngest two siblings. And a set of sisters all with flower names - Daisy, Violet, Ivy, Hyacinth (who hated her name, and was called something entirely unrelated as soon as she was able to protest) and Lily - where all the boys had, again, normal names - Charles, Sam, Eddie and Cyril.
Alice Fox, who came from a family of criminals - or at least, her dad (the aforementioned Horatio Fox, “a rough-looking fellow [and] lazy, drunken vagabond”, according to the papers, who I talk about here a bit) was terrible in at least most ways you can think, to his family as well as himself, and seems to have been in prison more often than not, fortunately - and one of her aunts was the 1870s equivalent of a shoplifter, whilst the other caused a lot of bother fighting with her neighbours, and the last married a policeman, which must’ve caused some family drama, I imagine. But Alice married a baker, who’sone and  only mention in the local paper was that once he got fined for leaving his car outside a shop for too long, which spooked a horse, in 1912 - so while that’s no proof, I do hope her later life was happier than her childhood.
Ah, who else, now.
John Stuart Scarth, who was a son of a gun - although not in his manner, so far as I can tell. He was born, impossibly, on a ship on it’s way back from Malta. Impossible because although his dad was a soldier, the regiment he belonged to would not be in Malta another 30 years. He lists himself as being born in Lisbon, however - but although his daughter must’ve got something wrong - or I have, or someone has - he must’ve told her that story, for her to remember it and tell it to the author of a genealogical book about posh people in Illinois. I’m not entirely sure I believe that book, that she was "a lady of culture and refinement”, since that is certainly not true of any of my more recent relatives (refinement?? nah), although I do believe the book/her that her dad was the precentor of St Magnus’ Cathedral, sort of like a choir master, for 40 years, and had “a peculiar talent” “in vocal and instrumental music”, and valued music far above his trade (which was tailoring, same as his dad - who also had the same name) - I know from the Orkney papers some of the songs he sang, and that he had a “neat manner” and that he sang as entertainment for the local Temperance League meetings sometimes - which is why I say he was not a son of a gun - although his place of birth makes him one.
James Linklater Fergus, the first actual Scouser in my family (although Lancashire goes further back some, on another branch), a sailor on a steam ship who died in Alexandria, Egypt, after stepping on a rusty nail - or at least, that is what I assume from “puncture wound, sole rht foot, 10 days hosp”.
Betsy Evans, my 4th-great aunt, from Darlaston, who listed her occupation as “latch-press” in 1871 - I know of course it means that she made latches, in a factory or suchlike, but it seems so much like an old-timey word for a thief, doesn’t it? I can quite imagine her making the locks she will later break into, though I’m sure that’s a foolish thought if ever there was one.
Alfred Cotterill, my great great grandfather, who emigrated to Boston and came back not two years later - to join the war effort, for ww1 had begun (supposedly, according to his grandson - but he married in april 1914, in Newport, Wales (to an awful woman), and the war did not begin until july - so unless he was clairvoyant, I fail to see how that was the case. He had a tattoo, on his right arm, although I’ve no idea what of, since I can’t find his blummin war records, can I? He spent most of the war as a POW, in the salt mines - he was shot in the leg in no man’s land, and was reportedly glad the germans picked him up instead of the british, since it meant he kept his leg, rather than the british, who had no time or resources, just amputating it.
Richard Mussard, a cab driver in London in the 1850s etc, who lived near two train stations and did so alright for himself that he owned his own cab after some time. He became a cabbie before the advent of The Knowledge, and so must’ve been one of the first to have to take it. I’ve no idea of his parents, but London in 1800 seems to have had two Mussard families - one, lightermen (sort of like ferrymen, only for things rather than people, working with the currents and with long paddles used for steering) from Battersea, or the other, a middle-class fencing/dancing instructor to boarding schools who did indeed have a son called Richard, although it was his middle name and not first. I don’t know how Richard might have got from an alright middle-class background to ferrying people between train stations for a pitance, and I would not wish such a decrease in fortunes upon him, but I do hope I’m decended from a fencing instructor anyway.
---
I think that’s rather enough, I suppose - I’ve run out of people that other people seem to find interesting, and I’m sure if I continued I’d bore you. And it’s midnight.

The Summer Fling (Chapter 8) - Dylan O’Brien
Author: @were-cheetah-stiles
Title: “San Diego Convention Center”
Relationship: Dylan O’Brien x Reader/OFC
Author’s Note: This is July 20th. Okay. Cool. Bye.
Summary: Dylan spends his morning talking about his relationship with you to Tyler and Colton, before he has an uncomfortable run in in the middle of the convention center.
Chapter Seven - Chapter Eight - Chapter Nine
Tumblr media
"Bro, I am so emotional today, I can't even talk about Teen Wolf before the panel or I'm gonna lose it. Can we please talk about something else?" Tyler complained to Colton.
"Fine. Let's talk about you. Bella Thorne? Really, Ty?" Colton teased and Dylan snickered.
"Oh, yea, this is a better topic for him." Dylan mumbled sarcastically, without looking up from his phone.
"I mean, honestly, Tyler, what were you thinking? She's kind of trashy and she was way too young for you." Colton criticized Posey over his choice in women.
Posey chuckled and shook his head. "Nah, man, be nice. She's hot and, she's actually really sweet... and what are you talking about? Jeff is like twenty years older than you." Tyler countered, bringing up Colton's fiancé.
"Yes, but I'm almost thirty and we're in love,
so.." Colton pretended to glare at his old friend, and then observed Shelley walk by with Linden and Melissa while staring at Dylan, who didn't notice any of the exchange. He turned back to Tyler, who simply shrugged. "You not talking to Shelley?" Colton leaned over and asked Dylan, who was sitting in the holding room in the basement of the convention center with the rest of his cast, scrolling through articles about the Mets on his phone.
He looked up at Colton and then glanced over at his estranged friend, then bobbed his head to the side. "Not really, I guess. I think Britt won her in the divorce." Dylan barely laughed at his own joke.
"How you holding up, buddy? You look good.." Tyler gripped Dylan's shoulder and massaged it for a moment.
Dylan's mouth turned up at the corner and he clicked his phone off. "Thanks, Pose. You look good too." Tyler smirked and Colton shook his head and laughed at the two best friends. "I'm doing good though." Dylan paused as Sprayberry sat down next to Tyler and joined their conversation. "I've just been hanging out, you know? Enjoying New York and shit." Dylan smirked, then rolled his lips back into his mouth to suppress the involuntary smile. He began jiggling his leg as he watched Colton and Tyler smirk at each other.
"What's her name?" Colton asked smugly.
"Y/n." Tyler answered with a grin.
"Is she an appropriate age?" Colton made a playful dig at Tyler over their earlier conversation.
Dylan chuckled and folded his hands over his stomach and leaned back in his chair. He was relaxed getting to talk about you. He knew that they would be the easiest questions he'd get to answer all day. "Yea, she's like ten months older than me."
"How'd you meet her? What does she look like? Give me the details, man." Colton prodded, leaning forward and poking Dylan in the knee with his fingers. Tyler leaned forward a smidge as well, curious to learn more about the girl that Dylan had been spending his summer with.
Dylan unlocked his phone and pulled up the photo that was taken of the two of you by Jay at Silly Lilly's weeks earlier. He handed the phone to Colton, who zoomed in on your face, and tilted the screen so that Tyler could see it too. "Yo, she's hot. Who is that?" Dylan Sprayberry said as he glanced over Tyler's shoulder at the phone.
"Dyl's little summer hook up, or?" Colton teased, tilting his head to the side.
"We're figuring it out when I get back next week." Dylan smiled.
"Sick, dude. Yo, Khylin, Shell and I are going upstairs for a smoke, you coming?" Sprayberry asked Dylan.
Dylan smiled and shook his head. "Nah, actually, I'm good."
Tyler cocked his head back and smirked at Dylan. "You finally quit?"
Dylan bobbed his head back and forth. "I mean, it was never that serious, but since I've been hanging out with Y/n, and she fucking hates smoking, I haven't really been doing it anymore, especially the past two weeks." Dylan clarified.
"So she's a good influence too?" Tyler asked, his mouth in a full on grin.
Dylan nodded, then stared down at the floor and thought about you, a massive smile breaking out on his lips. "She's pretty phenomenal actually."
"What's she like? What does she do? What have you guys been doing?" Colton pried. "Give us the deets."
Dylan laughed and then began rubbing at the slight stubble growing on his jaw. "Okay, well, she went to Boston College with Julia, and that's how I met her. She's really smart, and funny and fun and she's always down to do whatever, and she's really adventurous and active, so she's really got me out and doing things, which is good, but at the same time, we've burned through like five seasons of Game of Thrones in about a month, so she's also kind of a homebody, which I love, and she's obviously beautiful..." Dylan gestured to his phone, resting on top of his knee, reminding them of the picture he had just shown them. "She's got great taste in movies and tv and music..." Dylan looked at Tyler. "Actually, bro, you'd fucking love her taste in music. I was going through her iTunes the other day and she had all this shit you listen to."
"Yo, she's from Long Island, right?" Tyler asked, having been caught up a little more about you by Dylan beforehand than Colton or Sprayberry. Dylan nodded. "You think she listens to Bayside?"
Dylan snickered and then picked up his phone. "Let's find out.. It's early enough that she maybe hasn't left for work yet."
Dylan O'Brien: Hey, you. I'm talking about you to Colton and Tyler and DylSpray, and Ty wants to know if you listen to Bayside.
"What does she do?" Sprayberry asked, as they all watched Dylan compose the text to you.
"She wants to be a journalist or work for a non-profit maybe, but for now, she works a couple of part-time jobs and just travels a lot. She had been all over Asia this spring, and was in Vietnam when she had to come home unexpectedly." Dylan explained, glancing at his phone again to see if you had texted him back yet. You hadn't.
"Damn, she's a world traveler then." Colton smirked, and raised his eyebrows.
Dylan laughed and nodded. "Yea, we watched the new trailer for AA and she immediately clocked one of the filming locations as Piazza Navona. It was crazy."
"So what've you guys been doing in New York?" Sprayberry asked still sitting next to Tyler, not having gone up to smoke with Shelley and Khylin, instead getting wrapped up in hearing Dylan's updates.
Dylan smiled genuinely and rubbed the screen of his phone against his black trousers. "We've been watching a ton of Thrones, so that's definitely one. We went paddleboarding and surfing and kayaking, and um, we've been walking her dog a bunch and just kind of hanging out at the beach. We've gone on a few hikes, and I took her to see Spider-Man..." Dylan paused to try to remember all of the dates that you had been on since you got back from Kansas. "We've been in the city a bunch too. I took her to a Mets game, regardless of the fact that she's a die-hard Yankees fan."
Tyler cut him off. "Dude, what? You're hanging out with a Yankees fan? That's so fucking weird for you."
Dylan laughed loudly and nodded. "I know. But what I learned from that date is that, while she will heckle me and tell me that Derek Jeter or Andy Pettite wouldn't have made that mistake, or whatever bullshit, she is actually just a New York baseball fan at heart, and she knew a lot about my Mets and she was shitting on the Rockies for the entire game. It was fucking great." Dylan smiled and thought back on how much fun he had at the baseball game with you. He continued listing off the things you had done. "What else..? We went to a winery on the North Fork. We went to The Met and she showed me all her favorite art. We saw Six Degrees of Separation on Broadway..."
Colton interrupted. "Oh my god, how was Allison Janney?" He asked.
Dylan smirked and then felt his phone buzz. "She was really good." He grinned as he handed his phone to Tyler, showing him what you had texted him back.
Y/n Y/L/N: i'm a Long Islander.. i think i would get my ass kicked if i didn't listen to Bayside.
Y/n Y/L/N: i'm at work, so i had to dig through my pictures, but show this to Posey.
Tumblr media
"WHOA. WHAT THE FUCK, BRO!" Posey yelled, an excited smile spread across his face. "She collects records and has Bayside? Is she part of the Cult? Dude, dude.. I am so stoked on this chick right now. I'm texting her back."
Dylan laughed and let Posey do what he wanted, trusting his best friend not to make an ass of himself. "So, yea, we've been doing a lot and I really like her and we've just been having a lot of fun. It's been a really good summer so far."
"What does your sister think about you basically dating one of her friends?" Colton asked.
Dylan watched as Tyler and Sprayberry took a goofy selfie and sent it to you and he smirked and shook his head, then turned back to answer Colton's question. "She actually doesn't know."
"How does Julia not know, man?" Sprayberry asked.
"Quit pressuring him, guys. It's new." Tyler teased Dylan and handed him back his phone. "She's hella cool, bro. Definitely an upgrade. Keep her."
Dylan laughed, and a small blush rose to his cheeks, which he tried to hide as he began rubbing the sides of his face and jaw with his hand. "Yea, she's really great, but uh, I don't know. We haven't even discussed if it's just like a summer fling kind of deal or if this could potentially go somewhere yet.. Plus, I'm a little afraid that Jules is going to be pissed, either at me or at Y/n or at us both, and I just don't want that."
"Julia always seemed cool, I'm sure it'll be fine." Colton reassured his old friend, and Dylan bobbed his head to the side, and began chewing on his bottom lip.
"Hate to break up this reunion, boys, but we're heading up. Dyl, sweetie, you're going up in the next elevator." Melissa walked over in her vibrant floral dress and beautiful black curls, and prompted the group to get going up to the panel. Colton and Sprayberry followed her over to the large service elevator that would take them up to the convention hall, but Tyler stayed behind and put his hand on Dylan's knee.
"Dyl, you seem much better, but I missed you, dude."
Dylan smiled and leaned forward to place his hand on Tyler's shoulder. "I missed you too, man. I'll be out here a little more next month, I go back to New York pretty quickly this week though."
Tyler nodded and stood, Dylan following suit, and he embraced his best friend in a tight hug. "I love you, bro. I can't believe we're about to do this."
"I love you too, Ty. I'll see you upstairs, alright?" Dylan patted him on the shoulder and watched as he walked off to join the rest of the cast in the elevator.
Dylan sat back down; he knew it would be about five minutes before he would get to go upstairs to the panel. He checked his phone. He had seven text messages.
Holland Roden: Dyl, have fun today. Enjoy it for the both of us.
Holland Roden: I miss you tons. We have to get dinner the next time we're both in LA.
Holland Roden: And don't ignore Shelley. The two of you were best friends. Just try to remember that. Loveeee you.<3
Tyler Hoechlin: Love you too boo boo.
Dylan snickered at the text from Tyler, and scrolled past one from his mom that he swore he would answer later, and one from Taylor Kitsch stating how excited he was to start press and see him again. Then he got to the text he wanted to see: yours.
Y/n Y/L/N: YO, YOU SHOULD COME OUT FOR A HOMETOWN BAYSIDE SHOW. IT'LL BE DOPE.
Dylan laughed out loud, took a screenshot of the text conversation, and sent it off to Posey. He then went back to text you.
Dylan O'Brien: Posey is in love with you now.
Y/n Y/L/N: can i assume this is my Dyl and not Sprayberry?
Dylan's heart skipped a beat over the words, 'my Dyl'. An uncontrollable smirk broke out across his face.
Dylan O'Brien: It's your Dyl. I miss you a lot.
Y/n Y/L/N: you're the cutest. i miss you too. :( what are you up to right now?
Dylan O'Brien: I'm about to go upstairs to the panel. I'm really nervous actually.
Y/n Y/L/N: you're going to have the time of your life. enjoy it. try to take moments every so often to just look around and take it all in. you're going to do great :)
Dylan O'Brien: :)
Dylan O'Brien: You're the best. I'll talk to you later tonight. Have a good day.
He locked his phone screen, shoved it in his pocket, scrunched the left sleeve of his dark gray henley, and stood up to follow the security guard upstairs to do his final Teen Wolf panel ever.
Tumblr media
After the emotional and bittersweet panel was over, Dylan had to do interviews and attend some small sponsored parties with his cast mates. It didn't matter that he kept getting seated next to Shelley, he was flying high on endorphins over how well the day was going, and how supported he felt by you; always sitting in his front pocket, a call or text away if he needed you. He decided to take Holland's advice, and pulled Shelley aside before the IMDB interview with Kevin Smith. They talked for a few minutes, with Dylan reassuring her that they were still friends and he still loved her, and her apologizing for what Britt did to him. They hugged it out and Dylan began feeling much more relaxed.
Dylan was feeling good enough, and slightly intoxicated enough that, along with some security, he decided to walk through the floor of the convention center to interact with the fans a little more before leaving. He walked through with Tyler, Sprayberry, Cody and Khylin and the moment that they hit the floor, they were swarmed. They managed to get about half way through the building when they came across the cast of Riverdale finishing up their signing event and being pulled away to their panel.
"Shit... fuck shit, shit." Tyler whispered as he saw Dylan connect his eyes with none other than Britt. "We have to go..." Tyler tugged on Dylan's shirt, but didn't get him to move.
"Dude, people are watching." Cody commented, scanning the crowd that was forming.
"Cody’s right. Just say hi, and leave... fuck." Dylan whispered to Tyler.
"Well, this isn't going to be good." Khylin mumbled as he watched Dylan's ex-girlfriend approaching rapidly with a smile on her face.
"Hey, Dyl. I was wondering if I was going to see you today." She hugged Dylan, who's breath hitched in the back of his throat as he smelled the familiar fruity scent of her shampoo. "Hey, T-Pose." Britt tried to lighten the mood and went to hug Tyler, but he backed up slightly and simply nodded at her. "Hey guys." She smiled at Cody, Sprayberry and Khylin behind the two older boys. The three of them simply smiled and waved halfheartedly. "So, I heard the panel went well."
Dylan glanced around him and noticed the increasing presence of camera phones being lifted in the air around them, trying to get a shot of the awkward Hollywood couple reunion. He pursed his lips and raised his eyebrows. "Yea, it was good."
"Listen, we gotta go.." Tyler interjected, but was quickly cut off by a fan who got through the security barrier around them.
"Oh my god, oh my god. Oh my god, can I please get a picture? Oh my god, this is so exciting. Please?" She glanced between the cast and Britt.
Tyler smiled and nodded and positioned the sweet young girl in between him and Dylan. Cody, Sprayberry and Khylin all gathered around to join the photo-op, but before the security guard could snap the picture, the young fan grabbed Britt's arm and pulled her in. "Please, I am so glad the rumors weren't true and you two are still together. You have to be in the picture. I loved A Dog's Purpose so much."
Dylan sighed and lightly put his arm around Britt's shoulders as she wrapped hers around his waist and they all stood for a moment for the picture. "Thanks, sweetheart." Tyler hugged the fan one last time before security escorted her back outside of the group.
"Dyl, can I talk to you really quick?" Britt asked in a hushed tone.
Dylan pursed his lips and exhaled deeply, still feeling the eyes of a third of the convention center resting intently on their exchange. He was both grateful and miserable over the next interruption.
"Hey, babe, we're going in, are you coming?" Dylan looked over and immediately recognized the fake orange mop of hair talking to Britt. He connected eyes with the younger man and felt sick. "H-hey, man.. Good to see you." KJ hesitantly extended his hand out to Dylan's and Dylan shook it reluctantly. Dylan didn't say a word.
"Yea, yea, I'm coming right now..." Britt told KJ, then returned her gaze to her ex. "Um, I'll see you or text you, okay?"
Dylan simply pursed his lips and quirked his eyebrows up, then watched her walk away with her hand in KJ's. "Let's get the fuck out of here... Spray, give me your cigarettes." Dylan turned and looked at his friends, then held out his hand as Sprayberry placed the entire pack in Dylan's palm. "Let's go."
Dylan smoked in the car with Khylin and Sprayberry all the way to the hotel, then chain smoked the rest of Dylan's pack until his hands stopped shaking. He felt the anxiety begin to melt off of him as the thick smoke filled his lungs, and finally he relaxed.
Dylan decided to stay in instead of going out with Tyler and the rest of his cast mates, and laid on the large and white king sized bed in his hotel room. He checked his phone. He had four texts from Posey, checking in on him, one more from his mom and seven from Britt. He couldn't stand to read any of them. The one person that he wanted to talk to had not texted him once since that morning. He felt doubt and panic begin to creep into his mind, and he finally tossed his phone across the room, landing gently on the carpeted floor.
He pulled his hands up to his face and rubbed hard against his closed eyes, trying to stave off the early stages of a stress headache. He decided to get up, grab his phone and just call you. He was certain that you weren't texting him because you wanted him to enjoy his time with his cast, but he needed to hear your voice and make sure that your silence wasn't something more. He tapped your number and watched as the call connected and began ringing. It rang and rang and then went to voicemail.
"You've reached Y/n's cell, I'm probably in a different country, you really should just email me." He smiled at your soft snicker. "Leave me a message and I'll maybe get back to you. Thanks."
He was both frustrated by you not answering, and also instantly calmed by the sound of your voice. He began speaking after the beep. "Hey.. Uh, I just.." He glanced at the clock under his hotel TV and shook his head. "I just realized what time it is there and now I'm grateful that you didn't answer and I didn't wake you. I'll just talk to you tomorrow. I hope you had a good day... I miss you..... okay, yea, bye."
Dylan sat down at the foot of his bed, placed his phone next to him, leaned his elbows against his thighs, and shoved his hands against his face. He felt the skin of his cheeks and lips move up and down with the movement of his hands. He thought about calling you again, just to get your voicemail and hear your voice one last time. He decided that running out and getting a pack of cigarettes would probably be a more thoughtful solution, and wouldn't run the risk of waking you up at two in the morning. He sighed heavily and scanned the room for where he had left his shoes. He walked over to his suitcase and pick them up off of the floor when he heard a gentle knocking at his door.
He walked over and opened it. "Hey." He said with complete and utter surprise spreading over his face.
"Hi."

Dear Leggy, Sixty
April 29, 2018
Dear Leggy:
Only a year has gone by since we last wrote. Only a year has gone by and we are both in love. A year has gone by and we are both in love and we are both happy. We are both happy and in love and the time keeps passing without deference for my need to tell you everything. Inconsiderate shit, time.
I have three new topics that are extremely important that I share. So important that I wrote them down in my notebook to tell you. One two three. And I will get to them but I have to say that I only now just remembered that I didn't send you a Valentine's poem on SoundCloud this year and I don't have a particularly good reason except that I forgot because I was busy focusing on my horse prince who probably would not have minded a brief detour to allow me to send you something. He likes you, if you recall. You two exchanged words of praise through me and I liked being that love conduit. After our weekend all together in the desert, he commented how great it was that we all found each other, all these friends with no children. I don't know if he meant to link the two in such a bleak way but that's how I heard it and I don't know if I responded the way I felt but I did point out the ones who do have children. And then we never spoke of it again.
Only in my forties do I think of the perceived baroness of a family with no babies. It's an unfair perception, honestly. There is nothing empty about living a full life. There is nothing injurious about choosing to focus on falling in love rather than bearing a child that has ill-equipped parents. The only emptiness is the feeling that one is not complete in others' eyes, if for just a moment, unless they expand their blood line. It turns my insides right upside down.
Speaking of bloodlines, I don't know what mine is! I mean I never really did and had some suspicions based on what other's, now deceased, claimed. But, in all truth, I am a full mystery once again. Like an alien dropped to earth to suss out humanity. Here's what I thought I knew. My mother's side is apparently some combination of Irish, Welsh, and Sioux Indian. This belief remains untouched and since I don't speak to anyone over there I'll likely believe this forever. On the dad's side, one hundred percent English. His father was meant to be a two first named wife-beating piece of trash that drank himself to death from whom my grandmother, now deceased, protected her children. Only not so! Turns out the dad and his older sister have different fathers. The one with the two first names is my auntie's biological father and she has found his living family and has discovered he was a great guy. A loving father and husband. A contributing member of society. A traditionally, intrinsically good man. Neither of them ever met two first named dad and throughout their lives they never pursued him because their mother, my grandmother, now deceased, told them he was dead. (We can save the discussion on her shittiness for a later date.) So who is the dad's dad? Well, science shows he was a Frenchman! And intuition and rumors suggest he was a Priest! And preliminary research implies a potential French Canadian settler (or the begotten of one)?!
I have always liked French stuff, especially the French work week. Also, wine and citizens' uprising and castles and stripes. The classic beauty of Brigit Bardot and Charlotte Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin (an Englishwoman but French by conjugal association). The cultivation of art and embrace of expression. It makes sense then, doesn't it, that I'd be Franco American?
Knowing where you come from seems to be a running theme in this life. People really want to know. It's part of you. For me, I've always been trying to get away. But when you think you know then you find out you don't and that someone took away your identity and made you believe you came from garbage, it does a number. Is that fair to say? I mean, for me it's not so bad. I have never been close to the paternal side of the family and never did like the grandmother, now deceased. I thought she was mean and her eyebrows always said she was disgusted by my existence. She smelled like cigarettes and had a smoker's cough and her touch was cold and thin. I didn't understand the dad's allegiance to her. He bought her a car and paid for her to live in a home and she never called him and certainly never asked about me. (She was quite similar to my own mother, quite frankly. The disdain for other's people's happiness. The wry smirk when anyone could find life joyful and playful. In her last days, she thought she was three years younger and she stayed there, at seventy nine, on this loop of time and kept circling back and around and around wasting the opportunity that time gave her to right her wrongs with candor.)  For the dad, I wonder if he feels unwitting. Or some kind of alternate universe Oedipus. In being the black sheep of the family, the long hair hippy pacifist that left Oregon for San Francisco, he became the father that he was told was his. A person who was a fiction. A man to whom he had no blood connection. How would that make a man feel other than lost?
When we went on our vortex road trip two summers ago, the dad fell in love with the archangel Michael at Lake Louise and I knew he was a christian at heart. When the siblings began sharing rumors of his father, a Catholic Priest, there was no doubt in my mind that the dad would be a child of the church. Not a one. The imprint was making itself known. So, now, sixty five years after his entrance to this earth, the dad is looking for his father, a man of god, and I am just sitting here shaking my head that someone could hold on to a lie for so very long. I've debated changing my name. I'm not a _____. And neither is my brother. We could be Denueves or Chamberlains or Coutoures or Pettits. We could be anyone else.
I managed to tell you one of the things. I have more.
I love you.
Always.

Eric and Micah,
Life Changing! To think of all the time I could’ve saved if I had Push Button Marketer before. I’m not exaggerating when I say, “This is a dream come true”.
I didn’t believe it at first … seemed impossible, but now my tasks, my emails, my marketing and my actual copy writing has been practically automated!

“IT’S LIKE HAVING AN EMPLOYEE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE TO PAY!”
Tumblr media
Eric and Micah,
Wow, I can truly say that I am blown away by Push Button Marketer!
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was more along the lines of a desktop dashboard type of application, not a super charged assistant that would actually do things for me instead of just making it easier for me to do myself.
Push Button Marketer does more than I thought possible, and I haven’t used anywhere near all the options. It’s like having an employee that you don’t have to pay! I can’t wait to setup even more automations and really start using this baby for everything. The extra time will be awesome. I think when people actually use it, they will be just as blown away as I am now.
Great jobs guys. I am impressed!

Tumblr media
Push Button Marketer is the most unique automation software I’ve ever seen or used.
There’s simply nothing out there that even comes close to everything that this software package can do. I’ve used a lot of automation software in the past but you guys have really out done yourself and I could have saved myself a lot of money if your package had been available back then.
No need to even think about it….this is a no brainer. If you have a website or business you need this software.

In fact, you just replaced me as the employee who did the most work in my business! Thanks a lot for giving me free time again!

Growing Up In the Bronx: The Birth of a Yankees Dynasty
by Jack Torpey
September 25, 2014: One of the most bittersweet days in New York sports history.  As Derek Jeter celebrates with his teammates after getting the game winning hit in his final home game, the people of New York celebrate with him.  They couldn’t have asked for a better send off for the man who had brought five championships and two decades of class to their beloved city.  However, the joy cannot hide the sense of sadness that is in the back of every New Yorker’s mind.  Since the mid 1990’s, the Yankees have been one of the most dominant and beloved teams in American sports.  During this twenty five year span, they amassed five championships and produced some of the greatest players in league history.  From the dominant pitchers Andy Pettite and Mariano Rivera to position players like Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada, Yankee fans have always had someone to route for.  Even so, they knew it wouldn’t last forever.  For the past year, Derek Jeter had been the final remaining player from the championship teams of the 1990’s and early 2000’s.  Now with Jeter leaving, the fans feel like they are losing their team with him.  Many analysts recognize this end of an era for the Yankees, and predict them to struggle for the next few years as they rebuild their team.  To the delight of the fans, this was not to be.  As one great dynasty was ending in New York, a new one was beginning with the youth of the Yankees’ organization.
August 13, 2016:  The Yankees are playing the Tampa Bay Rays at home in the Bronx, the score tied at zero in the second inning.  The end of the season is drawing near, and the Yankees’ hopes of making the playoffs are slim to none.   Stepping out of the dugout is a young player named Tyler Austin, who was called up to make his major league debut against the Rays.  The crowd stands up to applaud the rookie as he steps into the batter’s box, but nobody is expecting much.  Austin has other ideas.  On a two-two count, he drives a ball over the right field wall, and the entire stadium erupts in excitement.  Yankees fans are beginning to believe that the works of the team’s strong farm system might actually come to fruition.  As Austin runs back into the dugout to his ecstatic teammates, another rookie named Aaron Judge nervously walks to the plate for his first major league plate appearance.  There is a low buzz circulating around the stadium, and some hopeful fans wishfully speak of the possibility of Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge hitting back to back homeruns.  Judge steps into the box, and the crowd holds its breath.  “Judge hits one to center field and deep, going back Kiermaier, turning, looking, see ya!  A monster home run, back to back home runs for the baby bombers!”.  With one swing of the bat, the Yankees had discovered the foundation upon which they would build their next great dynasty.
The Yankees would go on to miss the playoffs and finish fourth in their division to end the 2016 season, but they definitely left a good taste in the mouths of their fans as the 2017 season approached.  The rookie catcher Gary Sanchez finished with one of the best debuts in league history, gaining rookie of the year nods after only playing two months of the season.  Also, Tyler Austin and Aaron Judge had successful starts to their career in 2016, combining for nine home runs in just two months.  The reason for all of this success by the youth of the Yankees’ organization stems from their dedicated work in their farm system.  Every offseason, the Yankees and their general manager put much of their efforts into acquiring the best prospects, either from college or other professional teams.  These young players are then sent to one of the Yankees’ three minor league teams, either at the Single-A, Double-A, or Triple-A level.  There, they get professional training by Yankee coaches and have the opportunity to face the best baseball prospects in America.  This is where prospects like Aaron Judge found themselves as they began their young careers.  Judge, however, would rise far above the rest as the 2017 season got under way.
September 25, 2017:  Rookie Aaron Judge, the new face of the Yankees, steps to the plate.  For Judge, the past five months have been a blur of home runs, media attention, and comparisons to the all time-greats.  He racked up 48 home runs, batted with a .284 average, was the starting right fielder in the All Star Game, and won the Homerun Derby.  Now, there was only one amazing feat for Judge to accomplish: beating the rookie home run record, currently held by Mark McGwire at 49.  As Judge gets ready for the pitch, the baseball world holds its breath in anticipation.  On a three-two count, Judge swings and launches the ball over the right field wall, tying the record.  The stadium is deafeningly loud, and now the fans are thinking about the possibility of Judge also breaking the record in the same game.  Now in the seventh inning, Judge walks into the batter’s box again, one homerun shy of the record.  He swings at a pitch right over the middle of the plate, and hits a towering fly ball out to left field.  The ball disappears into the bleachers, and the MLB has found its new rookie home run king.
The Yankees had an amazing 2017 season, much to the credit of Aaron Judge’s unbelievable performance.  After going 91-21 in the regular season, the Yankees entered the playoffs as the top wild card team in the American League.  In the Wild Card game, they defeated the Twins in a nailbiter of a game, with Judge hitting yet another homerun.  The Yankees moved on to face the Indians in the second round, the team who had set the consecutive wins streak in the regular season.  After falling down 2-1 in the series, New York battled back and upset the favorited Indians in a winner take all game five.  The New York Yankees were now headed to the American League Championship Series, something not done since Jeter’s time.  They were pitted against possibly the best team in the whole league, the Houston Astros.  The series did not disappoint, as the two powerhouse teams battled in seven unbelievable games, each fighting tooth and nail to make it to the much coveted World Series.  The Yankees would eventually fall to the Astros, the team that would go on to win the World Series, capping off what was amazing 2017 run.  They had stuck together through victory and defeat, praise and criticism, and put together one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory for New York fans.  The young upstart Aaron Judge had possibly the greatest season by a rookie ever, and he would win Rookie of the Year for his performance.  The team as a whole found its identity, and as one reporter put it “Yankees have become one of MLB’s most likeable teams”.  The 2017 Yankees brought the word “fun” back to New York baseball, and the die hard fans of the 1990’s saw parallels between the new generation of players and their beloved team of old.  When the New York Yankees parade through the streets of New York for the 28th time, hoisting up their World Series trophy, they will look back at 2017 as the catalyst for their success.  Truly, the birth of a dynasty.

Act Natural (Toy Soldier Productions 2012)
Tumblr media
SkiStar Movies Rating: 4.1/5 Stars
Shay Lee, Brock Paddock, Sandy Boville, Finn Anderson, Karl Fostvedt, Austin Torvinen, Khai Krepela, Dash Kamp, Noah Wallace, Jake Doan, David Steele, Sam Hurst, Will Berman, Luke Perin, Pete Arneson, Cody Perin
 Directed by Justin Brodin
Produced by Shane Dowaliby, Justin Brodin
Edited by Jonny Durst
Montana’s Toy Soldier Productions’ first effort Come Find Us (2010) was a low key, mellow affair that introduced the world to a crew of riders dedicated to making the most out of what they had while living in an area not noted for skiing.  Ironically, though they complained of not having as many ski features as other areas, the guys managed to find ways to train, shred and squeeze every bit of opportunity possible from their Big Sky setting and develop serious skills.  TSP’s next film, 2011’s Set Your Sights showed loads of progression in both the skiing and the film making as the tricks got more advanced and the camera work became more assured.  It was a solid sophomore effort that sent a strong signal that there was something happening with this crew.
Though these two earlier films had hints of some prodigious, yet unknown, skiing talents and were a pleasure to watch due to the director’s deft vision for the camera, nothing prepares you for the full out onslaught of shots that make up this year’s movie, Act Natural, particularly the first two segments.
Shay Lee delivers as great an opening sequence as Sean Pettit’s in Matchstick’s In Deep (2007).  Consisting of urban and backcountry shots, the sheer variety of Lee’s stomps twists your mind in incredulity.  You have to replay them again and again to fully comprehend the skill proficiency on exhibit.  He lines up 720s, misty 5s off roof tops, cab 540s, double back flips, rails on one foot – the list goes on.  Edited exquisitely to the alt-rock soundtrack from Mr. Gnome, Lee’s segment ratchets up the action and the tension right from the start and the punches keep coming right to the end.
And then, in a smart bit of programming, the vibe switches as the jazzy hip hop of Theophilus London’s “Big Spender” opens up and Brock Paddock delivers his tricks with complete mastery of form and with all the style of a real artist.  Like a 30s jazz great riffing around the melody and adding his own personal touch, Paddock glides smoothly throwing in understated flare, whether it be a crisp grab or a subtle drop of his shoulder on the afterbang.  And he brings this great style to some horrifyingly scary rails, jibbing everything on the way past.   This is a cleverly developed segment that highlights the skier’s personality without having him say a word and it’s the type of performance and filmmaking that builds legends.  Paddock’s stock is definitely going to rise as a result of Act Natural.
More so than TSP’s earlier films, director Justin Brodin has conceived of Act Natural as a real rider segment based movie. Not that there were ever weak links in the TSP crew of skiers, Act Natural has a much smaller roster than the earlier films and this provides a bigger platform for each skier to shine.  Austin Torvinen, David Steele and Luke Perin all turn in great parts.  Karl Fostvedt’s inventively aggressive hits are a stand-out especially on his smooth landings.   Finn Anderson, who seems to take a beating in his segments (here and in Set Your Sights) always comes back to astound and astonish with what he can do.  And then there are performances like Khai Krepela’s gut wrenching, high consequence rail ride two stories above the unforgiving cement of the street and Sandy Boville’s hard-charging approach, tearing everything up like a skiing version of Jack The Ripper, as he slays, hits and stomps rails, kickers and stairways.
Using two and sometimes three cameras per trick allows Justin Brodin and editor Jonny Durst to create a film that has a continuous flow of energy.  Act Natural builds and keeps a strong level of power all the way through until they finish up with a series of relaxed shots set around a custom built park of features in the backcountry, putting the viewer back down on the ground again after a monstrous ride.  Even where several of the same features appear in more than one segment, the TSP crew‘s strong repertoire of skills means that it never becomes dull – it simply highlights the different styles of each of the skiers. It should be no surprise that Act Natural took the honors for Best North American Film in the amateur category at the 2012 IF3 and that both Sandy Boville and Khai Krepela were nominated for IF3 Rookie of the Year awards for their work in this movie.
Toy Soldier Productions have got a winner on their hands with Act Natural.   By Mark “The Attorney General” Quail

We’re all about celebrating zines, small press, self-published books and whatever the heck else you want to call them. All we know is that the unfettered creativity that runs through these publications is the lifeblood of comics: it’s the place where real innovation and experimentation can take place in an entirely self-controlled artistic laboratory. It’s also where creators have the latitude to make the mistakes that will teach them the real skill of the craft. Heck, we love it so much we dedicate twenty eight metres of prime shelf space to it as the first thing people see when they walk in the door.
So of course we’re always on-board for Small Press Day, where we’ll have a succession of workshops where special guests will work with you to work on your own comics, as well as create contributions to the special giveaway zine we will be creating on the day with our friends at Orbital Comics (who will have their own events going on through the day). There will of course be a short delay in seeing the printed edition of the zine, but this year our pals at Broken Frontier will be uploading the completed zine to their website at the end of the day!
So come along to draw along with experienced small press creators, and take the opportunity to tap their knowledge and expertise, as well as see them in action! The schedule for the day will run as follows:
11 am - 2 pm - Ben Williams Anthology With guests Mona Glassfield, Theo Goodyer,  Tom Jones, KLL,  Isobel Otten and Matthew Pettit.
2 - 3 pm Body Horror and Sci-fi Workshop With guests Lando and Alice Urbino.
3-4 pm Kadak Collective   With guests Akhila Krishnan and Janine Shroff. 4-5 pm Broken Frontier Workshop With guests Molley May,  Holly St Clair, Olivia Sualdea and Lucy Sullivan.
It’s a great line-up, so don’t miss out! Work from the guests will also be available, so bring along your pocket money and get some quality comic goodies.
It all kicks off at 11 am on Saturday the 13th July and runs throughout the day, so pick a workshop that suits you (or pick them all if you fancy it) and we’ll see you there!
