SAINT OF THE DAY (September 22)
Tumblr media
On September 22, the Catholic Church remembers Saint Thomas of Villanova, a 16th-century Spanish Augustinian monk and archbishop who lived a life of austerity in order to provide for the spiritual and material needs of his people.
Born during 1488 in the Spanish region of Castile, in the town of Villanova de los Infantes, Thomas Garcia was raised to take after the faith and charitable works of his parents Alphonsus and Lucia.
His father, a mill worker, regularly distributed food and provisions to the poor, as did his mother.
Generous and devout from an early age, their son was also intellectually gifted, beginning his studies at the University of Alcala at age 16.
Within ten years, he had become a professor of philosophy at that same university, where he taught for two years before being offered a more prestigious position at the University of Salamanca.
Thomas, however, chose not to continue his academic career.
After his father’s death, he had determined to leave much of his inheritance to the poor and sick rather than retaining it himself.
At age 28, after much deliberation, Thomas embraced a life of chastity, poverty, and religious obedience with his entry into the monastic Order of St. Augustine.
Thomas made his first vows as an Augustinian in 1517 and was ordained a priest in 1518.
He taught theology within his order and became renowned for his eloquent and effective preaching in the churches of Salamanca.
This led to his appointment as a court preacher and adviser to the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V.
Presented with the prospect of being named an archbishop, Thomas initially declined and instead continued his work within the Order of St. Augustine, during a period that saw its expansion across the sea to Mexico.
In August of 1544, however, he was ordered by his religious superiors to accept his appointment as the Archbishop of Valencia.
Thomas arrived wearing the same well-worn monastic habit that he had worn for several years and would continue wearing for years to come.
Given a donation to decorate his residence, he funnelled the money to a hospital in need of repair.
After his installation, he visited local prisons and ordered changes to be made in response to their inhumane conditions.
While continuing his life of monastic asceticism, the archbishop worked to improve the spiritual lives and living conditions of the faithful.
He gave special attention to the needs of the poor, feeding and sheltering them in his own residence.
During the same period, he worked to promote education, restore religious orthodoxy, and reform the lifestyles of clergy and laypersons.
After 11 years leading the Archdiocese of Valencia, Saint Thomas of Villanova succumbed to a heart condition at the end of a Mass held in his home on 8 September 1555.
He is said to have died on the floor rather than in his bed, which he insisted on offering to a poor man who had come to his house.
He was beatified by Pope Paul V on 7 October 1618. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VII on 1 November 1658.

the entirety of buzzfeed unsolved but the stories are in chronological order: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGGIwil6tMX95BMdYvMY8Co5Y2J8yxpe-
supernatural was very hard to do so under the cut i've added my reasons for some difficult episodes to list! if anyone has qualms with it or if you notice any mistakes in the playlist please let me know!
the london tombs, la llorona, and the voodoo episodes were difficult due to no real timeframe being known for when they began so i based the london tombs off of ryan saying the bridge has been around since ancient rome which is why it's one of the first videos in the playlist. la llorona required me to do my own research which led me to believe the story came about in the 1500s? possibly predating that but the first written versions were apparently from the 1500s. for the voodoo new orleans episode i did some research and based it on when it could have been brought to the area.
for bigfoot, mothman, and the men in black, i listed those based on the first encounters/evidence presented
many of the locations, i listed based on when they closed their operations or the owners passed before becoming noted haunted locations. (winchester house, sorrel-weed, villa montezuma, whaley house, old city jail, pythian castle, vulture mine, waverly hills, bellaire house, eastern state, rolling hills)
other haunted ones are currently still operating so i listed those based on when they first opened or got into the hands of the current owners (viaduct tavern, st. augustine, tombstone, goatman's bridge, the viper room, bobby mackey's, moon river)
dauphine orleans hotel was listed as the date ryan said a license to may bailey was given for the bordello. im very unsure about this one so if anyone has suggestions on how to list this one, please reach out EDIT: decided on 1775 because ryan mentioned that year as the site the hotel is on and i felt more sure about it that choice
farnsworth was listed as the year of the battle of gettysburg due to the house being named after a soldier who died in that battle + notable events happening and around the house
the bermuda triangle was tricky so i listed that as the date the term "bermuda triangle" was first coined EDIT: it's been moved to close to the top of the playlist due to the first alleged reporting of weird bermuda shit being by christopher columbus in 1492. this made more sense to me
colchester and morris-jumel are museums now so those were dated as when they were officially museums
the uss yorktown and the queen mary are listed as when they docked for good.
the alien abductions episode is in the 70s area of the playlist because 2/3 of the stories happened in the 70s.
the date the island of the dolls began is where i based "3 horrifying cases of ghosts and demons" since there are separate episodes for the winchester mansion and the sallie house
i based all the haunted locations on those things because i figured that the ghosties would appear after the notable deaths and wild events instead of listing all of them as when they first opened.
i hope all of this makes sense. enjoy.

Revenge is the safe space is such a ridiculous take that I have to get it out of my system or I will go insane.
Revenge is a ship whose captain is utterly useless. He gets the ship beached because he forgets someone should be steering it. He loses the hostages AND gets himself caught by the natives who only let him go because they realize he poses no threat (which is super telling given their history with white colonizers). In the Republic he immediately gets himself in trouble with Jackie and it's only Blackbeard's reputation that saves him. He walks straight into Geraldo's trap and almost gets killed, only to be rescued by Edward again. He is too much into Ed and too fucking polite to question Jack's motives until it's way too late, thus putting all of his crew in harm's way.
Revenge is a ship whose captain inspires zero confidence in his crew. They all know he's terrible at being a pirate and they keep saying he will probably get them all killed. He admits he has no idea what to do, which can't be great for the crew's morale - and on a ship the crew's willingness to carry out orders without hesitation may be a matter of life and death. He fucking treats his whims and fancies as more important than the crew's well-being and gets annoyed when the Swede gets scurvy after wasting all their oranges on a cake. And he doesn't even see it was his mistake.
And it's not even like the crew get space to be themselves in return either. Stede is great at talking about how they can be themselves on the Revenge, but in reality, they either get scolded when they don't do what he would like them to do or he doesn't notice their feelings at all because he's too preoccupied with his own bullshit. He tells them to enjoy their vacation however they like and then immediately scolds Wee John and the Swede for rough and tumbling because it's not how he would like them to behave. He doesn't notice Lucius is upset after being locked by Jim because he's too annoyed at not having his scribe to take down his musings. He doesn't notice how upset Jim is about their trip to St. Augustine because he's too excited about treasure hunting with Edward.
So let me ask: who exactly is safe on the Revenge? For all his terrible management style, Izzy would at least make sure the ship was stocked properly and had all stations manned at all times. I would 100% prefer Izzy to be my captain than Stede because Izzy would at least keep me as safe as it's possible for a pirate to be - and all he really wanted in return was discipline which is the most basic thing on a properly run ship.
So yeah, Izzy needs to change and learn to be more accepting, but Stede needs to learn EVERYTHING, from being a sailor to fucking noticing his crew's mood.
On a more personal note: I'm truly perplexed how many people think safe space simply means a space where one can talk about their feelings without being judged. It is that, sure, but that is step two. Step one is making sure the space is safe from the outsiders. It's taking up arms and carving this place out in a hostile world and then standing one's ground and defending it. Izzy stopped on step one and refuses to go any further. But Stede would like to have step two without ever taking step one and that’s not how the world works.

Just to clarify some confusions brought on by this post (especially since it has reached outside my usual Christian tumblr clique a lot of implicitly agreed upon context is lost), Catholics do not seek to make every sin illegal. St. Augustine even stated that we shouldn’t make earthly human laws banning every single sin because some good may be wiped out as a result.
For example, it’s a mortal sin to use contraception during sexual intercourse whether within or outside of marriage. However, if we were to make it illegal, we would have to violate people’s right to privacy in order to find evidence to prosecute people due to this prohibition. Hence why Catholics shouldn’t seek to make it illegal.
The point of the statement:
"Is an alcoholic free if he's allowed to take another bottle or if he's prevented to get another drink?"
is to show that an alcoholic isn’t really free; he’s a slave to his carnal desires. An alcoholic reaching for another drink is only hurting himself; he’s not fulfilling his best potential. If you love someone, you would prevent them from hurting themselves. Because the definition of love is willing the good of another. And the logic of love is the basis of Christianity.
Just as an athlete restricts himself certain food in order to achieve his best performance in a marathon, so too Christians follow certain rules and regulations so we can be purified and be worthy in uniting with God in the afterlife; because nothing unclean can stand within the presence of God.
We Christians abstain from pre-marital sex and pornography so we don’t settle for the kind of “love” that reduces people to sexual pleasure. And also so we can have the unconditional love and see the real soul of the person in his/her naked body after genuine and honest courtship and receiving the sacrament of marriage.
Because freedom is not an end on itself, it’s a means to an end, which is to achieve man’s purpose. And the purpose of human life is to love and serve God.
Since God made everything in the universe, everything exists to serve Him. Catholics believe that the purpose of the government is to lead people to God, not just preventing ourselves from killing each other.
Having said that, the kind of human laws that we should have that only forbids certain sins and not the others requires another blogposts (more like another book) so I’ll just end this right here.

“…i was haunted by my brother’s death, by the abandonment of my sister…”
majority of the conversation around paul in the amc setting revolves around the question of whodunnit, jokes about him at the second dinner table scene of the pilot, or paralleling his mental illness to louis [a parallel the show admittedly draws upon - with louis stopping his suicide attempt bc “paul forever ruining grace’s wedding night, and [louis] not wanting to do the same to claudia on the anniversary of her escape”] what i intend to focus on, is the specific nature of paul’s complaints with respect to levi, and what paul and claudia represent to louis.
in the book, paul wants louis to sell the plantations & town homes they own in new orleans, and give louis the money so that paul could travel and become a missionary saving france from the godless jacobins. the paul that we’re introduced to in the show is… similar in motivation, but fundamentally divergent. tithe the money over to st. augustine’s so the house dont fall in on them, but the first dinner table goes as this after he says that:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
whats of note too is the divergence of the draft v the pilot release. the show excises the freniere family w the exception of levi himself to drive home how paul’s objections to levi’s religious and ethnic background are overruled by the lingering shadow of jim crow.
paul is also reminded that his autonomy is conditional in this first dinner scene here: louis quips back to his point about sugarcane with “if daddy was still here, you’d be locked up in that asylum over in jackson”. its a reminder of the earlier point, but also speaks to something else.
bc of paul’s profound mental illness, he would never be allowed to live an autonomous life, much less hold authority over anyone: whether its the man of the house [as louis was in the du lac family], or as a bride [grace] or as the mother [florence].
this is strongly reminiscent of claudia — someone whos personal autonomy is entirely dependent on the purview of physically mature vampires by nature of permanently being trapped in the body of a preteen. it is also reminiscent of claudia in that louis in both cases plays a sort of savior in relation to them — whether its louis taking paul out of the asylum, or louis taking claudia out of the burning rooming home. louis views paul and claudia, especially claudia, as people that save him from his own self-loathing.. claudia somehow possessing this redemptive quality re: baby jesus…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
louis loves both of them deeply, but as iwtv has established, love as a feeling does not exempt someone from enacting violence toward you. in fact, the very loved one that harmed you has an entire framework of rationalizing that violent act as being ‘for your[my] own good’ as is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the title of this little post comes from the season one finale, where louis collapses in on himself to try to make sense of why he spared lestat, invoking paul and grace to create this red herring to the ‘murder of lestat’. but truly, the thread is false. louis did not abandon grace, and lestat’s death was only an attempted murder sabotaged by louis. modern day louis in the season finale triggers himself through daniel in order to provoke armand, the “protector of his pain”, to reveal himself + question him on the death of claudia, just as he questioned lestat on the death of paul in s1e6.

Saint Agnes of Montepulciano
1268 - 1317
Feast day: April 20
Agnes became known as a visionary and performed miracles.
Saint Agnes of Montepulciano was born into a noble Italian family. At a young age, her spiritual life consisted of prayer and penance. At 9 she entered the local Franciscan monastery and was elected Abbess at 15. After she had a vision from St. Dominic, she led her order to embrace the rule of St. Augustine as members of the Dominicans. Agnes was gifted with many visions, once even holding the child Jesus, and receiving Holy Communion from an angel. She interceded for people suffering from mental and physical illness. She died after a long illness and was found to be incorrupt with a perfumed liquid that flowed from her hands and feet.

So I found these notes in my drafts and I don’t know if there’s actually anything here or if I was just drunk:
Wake’s revenant showing up in HTN = visitations of the Virgin Mary
Visitations of Mary are often named “Our Lady of blank”
Wake’s niece is named Our Lady of Passion, but is John the Baptist within the Wake=Mary, Gideon=Jesus outline
The Virgin of the Passion or the Theotokos of the Passion is the name of a specific icon of Mary that was in the possession of the Order of St Augustine at one point
The icon is also associated with Mary’s epithet of Our Lady of Perpetual Help/Succor

Don’t Call Me Aaron
Part 1:
WORDS: 1.5K
You and Hotchner have just been called to go and check out a new crime scene for the case you’ve been working on for about a week now.
“I can’t believe we haven’t been able to catch this guy yet,” Hotch says, frustrated, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. “This makes six women dead now.” I get it. We’ve been doing everything we can but this unsub is still one step ahead of us.
“I know,” I tell him, “But we aren’t going to give up. He’s getting angrier, which means he may mess up and leave something at the scene that will help us.” I tell him with as much confidence as I can muster at the moment. I’m trying to be hopeful, but this guy has done everything perfectly. Not a sliver of DNA at the crime scenes besides the victims.
The team doesn’t know, but this unsub has hit close to home for me. I’ve never been able to tell them what happened. All they know is that my mom passed when I was 8 and my dad has never been around. Everyone has been trying to find him, especially Hotchner, I don’t think he’s slept since we arrived in the small town of St. Augustine, Florida.
In the three years I’ve been with the BAU, I’ve never seen an unsub get to Hotch the way this one has. I couldn’t tell you exactly what it is about this particular case, but you can see it on his face. He almost looks like he could explode.
“Hotch, I’m worried about you,” I tell him, looking up at his dark brown eyes. “You need to eat and you need to sleep. Those aren’t things you can just skip.” I just need him to take care of himself.
“How am I expected to rest when you-” he starts to say but is cut off when we pull into the driveway of the crime scene. Every police car in the state of Florida must be here. Hotch finds a place to pull over and we jump out of the car.
By the time my feet hit the asphalt, Aaron is halfway to the house, taking giant strides to get there like someone he adored was being held hostage in that house. I run to catch up with him and we walk in together. And as soon as my feet are over the threshold,
Blood. Blood everywhere. On the walls. Floor. Cabinets. If it’s in the kitchen, it’s covered in dark red blood. It looked as if a tornado had gone straight through the center of the house. Not a single thing looked as if it belonged. And right in the middle of the kitchen table, a kitchen knife, covered from handle to tip in the darkest, crimson blood I’ve ever seen.
I tried to hide the horror and fear on my face but I must not have done a good job because if I thought Hotch walked quickly into the house, he was dragging me out before I could blink. I couldn’t do anything but stare ahead of me, motionless. Trying to get my mind back where it needed to be.
“Go wait in the car. Now.” He said staring down at me. He almost looks, sad. I do what I can to keep myself from looking weak.
“Hotch, I’m fine, c’mon,” I told him, sounding surprisingly okay. I tried to walk past him back to the house. I didn’t make it very far though; he stuck his arm out to stop me dead in my tracks. “Aaron, this is my job, and you know I’m capable or you wouldn’t have hired me in the first place. This is important that we look over every detail. I want to find him just as bad as you.” I tell him frustratingly. I know he’s worried about me, but I’m grown, and I can take care of myself. What happened to me is not something I’m just going to forget. The next best thing is to work through it.
“I don’t care if you say you’re fine or not. You’re not needed here. That’s an order. Take the car back to the police station and help Reid with the geographical profile. I’ll get a ride from one of the deputies.” He hands me the keys with a deep sigh. “And don’t call me Aaron.” he ends, and goes back into the house. I walk angrily back to the SUV. I can’t believe he just did that. How am I supposed to help catch this guy if Hotch doesn’t trust me and my skills?
. . .
A few hours later everyone gathered at the police headquarters to look over the pictures from the crime scene. As JJ is flicking through all the pictures, I can feel someone’s gaze on me. I look around the room to see Aaron Hotchner, staring so hard at me that I was sure he could see straight through me. I decide to ignore it for the time being, but putting a mental note in my head to tell him to stop acting like I’m going to fall apart. I look back at the TV to see the living room of the house, which looked like a whole other house compared to the kitchen. Everything in the room was pristine like it had never been used, almost like nobody even lived in the house.
“So Hotch, did y’all find anything at the house?” Morgan asked.
“We did find a few fingerprints, Garcia is running them through the database as we speak.” He said, yet still looking at me. I’m so tired of him. He’s not my dad, and he needs to stop acting like he is. I never got the joy of having one of those. I’ve had enough.
“Well, we could have missed something since Hotch decided not to let me even look at the scene.” I told the group, but staring right at Aaron with boiling anger. I hadn’t even noticed my fists clenched at my sides until I could feel my fingernails digging into my palms.
“Why not?” Reid questioned, looking back and forth between me and Hotch. I’d love to see what he comes up with as a good excuse.
“Not that it’s anyone’s business, but she wasn’t needed. There were plenty of deputies there and I needed her here working on the geographical profile.” He told everyone. “It will take a few hours to get the results back from Garcia on those fingerprints, so everyone go home and rest, we will meet back here first thing in the morning.” I am exhausted and ready to be home so I can just sit in the silence. I need to be alone. I gathered all my stuff off the table and headed towards the door, but of course, it’s not that simple.
“Agent, a word please,” Hotchner says looking at me. Of course, I’m in trouble. And the group must have heard because they all turn and give me a sympathetic look before walking out and shutting the door behind them. I take a seat back at the table while Hotch continues to stand.
“What the hell was that?!” He inquires, with his arms crossed over his chest.
“Oh like you have no idea. You completely invalidated my skills today and made me feel like I wasn’t good enough to be on the team, Aaron” I spit back at him, sure to add his first name there at the end to make sure he gets the point. He starts walking in my direction and takes a seat directly next to me.
“I will not tell you again, do not call me Aaron.” He tells me through gritted teeth.
“Hotch I need to know why. Why did you send me back? I know I’m one of the best profilers in the BAU. I want to be treated as so, not like a five-year-old girl who needs her daddy.” I ask desperate to know the answer. I hate feeling like I’m not good enough, I’ve felt like that my whole life and things finally got better when I started working for the FBI.
“You want to know why?!” Hotch yells, standing again. He starts to pace around the room like he’s begging to get something off his chest. Something he’s been holding in since we got to Florida last week.
“Something is off about this case with you, I can feel it. And your face when you saw the crime scene, it was something I’d never seen in you before. I wasn’t going to sacrifice your well-being over this case.” He says, his pacing paused to gauge my reaction.
“Well that’s not your decision to make sir, I can figure that out myself. I am perfectly capable.” I tell him, swiftly standing from my chair to match him.
“What’s wrong, honestly?” He asks me, searching my eyes like they have the answer. But they don’t, I do.
“That’s none of your business, Aaron.” I spit as I grab my things and walk out, slamming the door behind me.

There’s a theme in Our Flag Means Death that I absolutely love. It’s basically that you must return to the life you know in order to bury it. While anyone could easily tell you what you left behind is barren, you can only move on to new life once you see the past empty for yourself.
We see Stede do this by returning to Mary, only to realize there is nothing left for him there. His family still doesn’t really get him, and Mary has found someone who makes her happy. He probably knew this all along, but Stede still needed to return to see for real that there wasn’t room for him in that place anymore. And that’s what brings him to the conclusion it’s time to bury that part of his life and walk away.
We see this theme with Jim too, when they return to St. Augustine and decide to stay behind to finally get closure with the Siete Gallos. The end of that episode leaves them standing in the empty ruins of their childhood home with their orange tree that no longer bears fruit. It’s a visually and metaphorically barren landscape. This is driven home once Jim finds our more about the Siete Gallos from Spanish Jackie and concludes that revenge isn’t going to fulfill them. It’s certainly closure, but it’s not fulfilling a mission, it’s finding fulfillment aboard the Revenge with Olu.
And finally, we see the same theme with Ed. When Ed returns to the ship after Stede abandons him in the finale, he makes the decision to become Blackbeard again and go back to the well-tread path he found so boring before. Maybe this time it’ll be enough. But in the final moments, when he’s sobbing alone, we know it’s not. He knows it’s not. And Ed is in the moment of realization that the life he had before has nothing more to offer him; hopefully season 2 brings him his closure in the form of fine clothes, seven sugar tea, and Stede’s tenuous smile.
