I was binging PBS space time, as one does, and something struck me about pictures of galaxies from the side. The stars in the back of the photo are not at the same time as the ones in front. As in, they're 100,000 years in the past relative to the ones in front. Depending on the size of the galaxy of course.

For this picture at the end of Empire Strikes Back, those stars in the far background? Yeah you're seeing light that came from them 75,000 years before the formation of the old Republic! We don't know how far they are outside the galactic rim, but given how they fit the whole galaxy in frame like that it's plausible that the stars in the foreground are themselves from the old Republic era. Technically the prequel events are far in the future for the core worlds as pictured here.

Not sure what that means for ftl travel, I know in reality that breaks physics in all kinds of ways. Simplest case you have to aim your ship where the target will be 100,000 years after you start.

i think its fair to say that Finn is absolutely an extremely important presence in Bubblegum's life, way more significant than she generally lets on at least earlier in the series, though it is supported when by the time of Pajama Wars she is going out of her way to just hang out with him and he seems to be just about one of the very few people PB is honest with or lets her defenses down around

but another big element of it, ironically, ties back to their relationship becoming unrequited pining on Finn's end. PB ended it by going 'oh, silly boy, that was YEARS ago!' when its unclear how much of that is her fucking around and not taking it seriously, especially when PB is often not entirely honest about her feelings.

It IS clear that at the time, she had been taking it seriously; she genuinely wanted to stay a kid and with Finn, though responsibility demanded otherwise. But it is notable that while she sort of implies its not a romance anymore at the time, she otherwise just sort of leaves it hanging and seems to be ignoring it, or trying not to think about it, and that IS extremely significant in the light of The Suitor.

This episode establishes that PB has no patience or interest in actual suitors of any kind, firmly rebuffing them and refusing any kind of flirtation. If they want to waste their time waiting in line to court her when she makes it clear its not going to happen, that's their problem. But with Finn, she doesn't do this. She doesn't encourage it, but she also doesn't just go 'NOT GONNA HAPPEN' in a direct sense.

Significantly, PB doesn't address it at all, and this is EXTREMELY atypical in her normal characterization. She is blunt and direct to a point that it is the reason she and Marceline originally broke up, and as we see in The Suitor she does not care for anyone courting her.

PB not addressing it at all is a notable outlier in her behavior, and being secretive about her feelings is a recurring motif (as we see with her and Marceline); this suggests that Finn is an extremely important person to her, and that she goes out of her way to avoid addressing them at all when normally she doesn't avoid it at all suggests that its all a huge complicated mess that may frankly concern her a bit.

the complex and uncertain nature of PB's feelings towards/about Finn raise a lot of questions because of how much of an outlier they are compared to the way she normally is; if you compare the way PB acts around Finn (very honest, kind of socially awkward) to the way she acts when acting in an official capacity around everyone else (usually bouncing back and forth between regal granduer and informal wackiness for comic effect, but always feeling in control and self assured) it definitely feels like she's sort of taking the mask off compared to how she acts otherwise.

Black holes are already terrifying existential nightmares, but they get so much worse when you learn that gravity as a force doesn't actually exist. At least in the manner that pushing on an object is a force.

It's like how from our perspective the curvature of Earth is practically indetectable, and yet if you pick a random direction and your friend picks another completely random direction and you depart—barring shit like food, sleep, exhaustion, human endurance, mountains and the literal ocean—no matter how far you walk or which direction you pick, your paths will inevitably cross because the earth is sphere and that's how things go. There's nothing actually pulling you and your friend back together, any straight line on a sphere must intersect in two locations on either antipode.

That's how gravity works but instead of the curvature of physical space, it's the curvature of space time. When you are falling, nothing is actually pushing you except for the passage of time, but the curvature of space-time just so happens to cause the path of you and the ground to intersect as you both move forward. It's why people always say that the fall doesn't kill you but the stop at the end does. Cause from your perspective being stationary in microgravity and falling are indistinguishable despite the fact that you're accelerating.

Except with black holes and other supermassive objects. Instead, when you approach black holes, the curvature of spacetime is so dramatic that different parts of your body are technically going different directions. Your feet are moving one way and your head is moving in another in relation to space time. Think of it as being strapped to two cars and one has decided to take the off ramp. So here, gravity is so strong that this time it is in fact the fall that's killing you and not the sudden stop. This is a process called Spaghettification. Because it turns you into spaghetti. No joke.

Or in other words, your body is being rent apart by the very fabric of the universe itself. It's like if you were a little stick man drawn on the surface of a balloon that's inflated with so much air it pops and the bonds holding your body together just goes everywhere. Unlike other horrific fates you can undergo, nothing physical or tangible is actually hurting you. Even radiation, as tiny and invisible as it is, are particles interacting with your body in a certain way that makes you very sick or vaporized (although black holes have plenty of that as well—in fact that will probably kill you first). Instead it's that you just so happen to be in close enough proximity to your mum that reality itself decides to have you drawn and quartered at the hands of the simple process that's called merely existing.
