You could probably write /anything/ about Jon and damian’s friendship, and I’d eat it up like a starving pig
It was a cold patrol night. Jon would be shaking if it wasn’t for the fact that he didn’t actually get cold. So as was, he was just hovering slightly to the left of Damian, who was in fact shaking, his cloak tucked tight around him.
“Hey. . . Rob?”
“What, Superboy?”
Jon floated a little closer to the older teen. Damian barely glanced over, still staring down at the street they were watching. Supposedly there was going to be a bank heist. This bank heist was supposed to happen three hours ago. Damian had barely moved once in the past two.
“Maybe we should just call it a night?”
“And lose our chance? Tt, unlikely.”
“We’ve been up here for like five hours and you’re shivering like a freaking chihuahua in a Kansas winter. Can we go get some batburger or something?”
There was silence for nearly five minutes, then Damian sighed.
“Yeah. Sure.”
Without another word, Damian jumped off the edge of the building, grappling away.
They ate some batburger, sitting inside to get warm, and then headed back out for patrols.
“Well, I’ll have to report back to father that the intel he got was bad.”
“Hmm, I bet he’ll be awfully disappointed.”
“What does that mean?”
“I dunno, I mean, isn’t it better in the end that they didn’t rob the bank?”
Damian shrugged. “Yes, for the public. It’s more boring for us if they don’t.”
“You find bank heists fun?”
“You don’t?”
“No, I find things like carnivals and football games and cinema dates fun. Bank heists are just. . . work I guess?”
Damian hummed, walking along the top of the roof they were on. Jon hovered near him, just in case he could fall.
“Cinema dates?”
“Yeah, like a movie date?”
“Isn’t that a boring date? What can you do? You have to be quiet in a cinema.”
“Well I mean. Most teens sit in the back and make out.”
“But then you miss the movie?” Damian looked up at him confused.
“Yeah, well. What is it you always say? People are dumb and horny or something.”
Damian snorted, shaking his head. “No, I say that sexual attraction leads to distractions.”
“Same thing. But anyways, you don’t have to go to a cinema date just to make out. If you and your date both like the movie, then you can like, exchange theories and stuff and then after you can discuss it, and usually people get food too.”
“Fascinating.”
“Don’t you ever think it’s funky that you’re getting dating advice from a kid three years younger than you?” Jon asked, sitting on the edge of the roof.
“Well my other options are Grayson and Father.”
“Fair enough.”
They sat in silence for a few minutes, and then Jon looked up at Damian.
“Race back to the manor?”
Damian was silent, staring over the city for another moment.
“Fine but you can’t start until I get to my bike.”
“Deal.”

TW: Mentioned transphobia
“Move away from the door and let me at him.”
“Kon, no.”
Tim shoved at Conner’s chest hard, blocking his path to the door.
“Tim, I’m gonna shove his tongue down his throat for that, hell, maybe I’ll-”
“Conner!”
Kon stopped, looking down at Tim, and immediately stopped pushing against him. Because he realized his mistake. Tears were welling up in Tim’s eyes and his jaw was clenched, his breathing was coming in shaky, clearly forced breaths, and his heart was pounding. He took another few seconds to look at him, and it suddenly became obvious that Tim was shaking. He was about to break down.
“Oh god, Tim.”
Kon grabbed Tim by the shoulder and pulled him in for a hug, wrapping the smaller teen up in a protective hold. Tim’s arms hung limply by his side, but he pressed his face into Kon’s chest and went silent.
Silent was scarier than explosions.
Silent meant Tim was burying things and would only let them bottle up, let them get worse, until later they would all explode when he didn’t have anyone there for him.
“Hey, babe. Baby, come here.”
Kon easily pulled them back, sitting down on Tim’s bed and pulling him into his lap, cradling him.
“Hey, it’s okay to be upset.”
Tim didn’t respond, didn’t look up at Kon, just kept his face tucked into his shoulder, jaw clenched.
“Tim. Do you want to talk about it?”
“Talk about what?” Tim asked finally, and his voice sounded . . . hoarse, strained, like he was about to cry.
“Maybe about that bullshit your dad just said?”
“It’s fine.”
“No it’s not!”
“You can’t be my son. You’re not even a boy!”
“It’s fine, Kon.”
“Tim. No it’s not!”
“I don’t want to talk about it!”
Tim shoved so hard against Kon’s chest that he fell off of Kon’s lap, twisting smoothly to land on his knees and then stagger away, falling on his ass, turning his back to Kon.
Kon waited.
He could hear the hitch of Tim’s breathing, the small hiccuping as he nearly silently cried. He had his arms wrapped around his knees, face pressed into his legs.
Kon closed his eyes as flashes of what Jack had said ran through his mind. Things he would never repeat. Things that shouldn’t have ever been said to anyone, but especially not your own child. It was horrifying and sickening and Kon wanted to storm out that door and punch Jack Drake’s front teeth out. But he couldn’t do that, because he wasn’t even supposed to be here. Jack didn’t know he was here.
But fuck if he didn’t want to.
“Can- . . . can you just go?” Tim hiccuped out, barely tilting his head to look at Kon over his shoulder. His cheeks were wet.
“No.”
“Kon, please.”
“Tim, I love you, but you’re pretty dense if you think I’m just going to leave you when you’re going through this.”
“Please. If he finds out you’re here. . .”
Kon just shook his head. “Hey. I didn’t fly all the way over to Central City for that asshole’s approval. I flew out here for you.”
Kon walked over, and very easily picked Tim up, carrying him over and setting him on the bed.
“Binder?” he asked, even as he pulled the sheets down.
Tim started grabbing at his shirt blindly, still sniffling and wiping at his eyes, so Kon turned away. He waited until he heard a sniffled ‘Okay’ before turning back around. He had, luckily, already kicked off his boots, so he just climbed into the bed, pulling Tim down and tucking him in close, keeping him safe.
He dared Jack to walk through that door right now.
He had some TTK and super strength that could handle that situation real quick.
Tim bunched his hands up in Kon’s shirt, shuffling in as tight as he could get, Kon tucked the blankets around them tightly, then just sat there in silence, gently stroking Tim’s hair.
He could almost feel the tension build and then snap.
One second Tim was silent, and the next he was bawling, horrible angry sobs that wracked his body and had him gasping for air. And Kon couldn’t do anything but just hold him and listen.
He cried for five minutes then fell silent, other than the shuddering breaths. Kon gently rubbed his back, pressing a kiss to his forehead.
“Give me the word, any time, any day, anywhere, and I will come and pick you up and take you back to Bruce. Hell, I’ll take you back to Kansas with me.”
There was a long pause, then a little huffed out laugh that was more bitter than anything.
“Thank you, Kon,” he murmured, but didn’t look up.
“Hey, I’m serious.”
“I know you are. . . but I can’t just leave him.”
Kon scowled at the wall behind Tim, but didn’t say anything because he knew better. They’d had this argument a few times now, and it always ended with Tim yelling at him to get out.
“I’m always here for you, Tim.”
There was no response to this. Anyone else may have thought Tim had fallen asleep, but Kon knew better. He didn’t say anything else, though. Just gently kiss Tim’s forehead again, lightly brushing his hair back again, then closed his eyes, letting them slip into silence.
Five minutes later, Tim was actually asleep.

we’ve got mistletoe and firelight
a christmas fic for my friend @queerbutstillhere! this was originally for the @damijonsecretsanta but i didn’t finish it in time fhnusihf sorry it’s a bit late korey but you know me DHFUSHYFSL
read it on ao3 The first Christmas was spent in Hamilton County, at Jon and his family’s house. It was snowing. Jon was just about to lose hope for a white Christmas, but mother nature seemed to pull through.
There was excitement in the air, as there always was during this time of year, and Jon was watching as the snow fell lazily outside the window.
"Down, boy," his mom chided, chuckling and putting a hand on his back as he realized he was hovering.
"Sorry, Mom." Jon lowered himself back onto the couch, a sheepish smile on his face.
Mom shook her head, smiling herself. "It's fine, Jon. You know powers are fine in the house, I just don't want you getting in the habit of using them without realizing."
"I know, Mom, I'll be careful," Jon assured her. She ruffled his hair, was met with his protests, then disappeared back into the kitchen to check on dinner.
Just then, Dad walked out of the kitchen, a steaming mug in each hand. He handed the one piled high with whipped cream to Jon, who thanked him avidly. "I would say it's hot and to be careful, but I'm not sure that really matters anymore," Dad commented, and Jon took a tentative sip of his hot chocolate to test it.
It felt fine to him, so he shrugged. "Don't think so. Tastes good, though."
Dad smiled. "You got a little something on your lip there." He pointed and Jon went cross-eyed for a second, then licked the whipped cream off his lips. "You're a bit too young to be shaving, still."
Jon rolled his eyes. "Daaad, you're not nearly as funny as you think you are sometimes."
"It's Christmas, Jon, humor me."
Jon stuck his tongue out and took another sip of hot chocolate.
When the doorbell rang, Jon was the first one up, at the door in a split second, mug left forgotten on the coffee table. “Damian!”
Damian stood in the door, wearing a long coat and a nice shirt and tie, contrasting Jon and his family’s matching sweaters. His dad stood behind him, dressed similarly.
It was a little surreal to have Batman over for Christmas Eve dinner, but then Jon was starting to get used to surreal.
“Bruce, Damian, thank you for joining us!” Jon’s dad came up behind him, placing a hand on Jon’s shoulder.
“Thank you for having us, Clark,” Mr. Wayne replied, stepping inside and reaching to shake his hand.
“Hello, Corncob.” Damian brushed snow off of his shoulder before shrugging his coat off, handing it to his father when he held out a hand for it.
“You can hang those right here.” Dad gestured to the coat rack. “Dinner’s almost ready. And Lois made pie!”
“Can’t wait. It’s been too long since I’ve had Lois’s pie,” Mr. Wayne said.
“Me, too,” Dad agreed.
“Mom made pie last week,” Jon commented, looking at his dad quizzically.
“Exactly,” Dad replied solemnly.
Damian shakes his head. “Tt.”
Dinner went by without much fanfare. And Mom's pie was delicious, as always. Dad had three slices and Damian's dad had two. Luckily, Mom had thought ahead and made two pies. Always one for preparedness.
Once they were all full and done, Damian wiped his mouth and stood. "Now that dinner is finished, I believe it is time for the main event…" He paused, looking around at all of them. Drama queen. "Presents."
"Yes!" Jon leapt out of his seat and made a beeline for the tree.
"Just one, Jon!" Mom called after him. "It's only Christmas Eve!"
Damian met him by the tree, picking up a box that Jon knew wasn't there before. "Here, open mine."
Jon took the box slowly, looking at Damian. "Really? For me?"
Damian scoffed and turned away. "Yes, Jonathan, for you. Who else would it be for?"
Jon smiled widely. "So we are friends,” he said, smile turning devilish.
“Tt. Don't push your luck.”
“You loooove me,” Jon taunted, floating over Damian’s head. “Can’t get enough of me!”
“Just open your present, Hayseed.”
Jon laughed, landing cross-legged on the floor. He started tearing open the wrapping paper, eyes widening when he saw what was inside.
"Monk-E-Monsters! I've wanted this game for months! How did you know?"
Damian shrugged, a knowing smirk on his face. "I'm Robin," he said simply.
"But I thought it was all sold out until after the Christmas season," Jon remembered, looking at him quizzically.
Damian shrugged again. "I'm also Damian Wayne. I pulled a few strings."
Jon grinned and threw himself at his friend (they were friends, whether Damian liked it or not). "Thanks, Damian."
Damian froze for a second, then relaxed. "Of course," he replied, patting Jon on the back. "Merry Christmas, Jon."
-
Wayne Manor was always cold this time of year. It was an unbelievably old house, and unbelievably big. But gathered in one of the smaller living rooms by a roaring fireplace, it wasn't so bad.
Decorations covered so many of the rooms that Jon would have thought it impossible if he didn’t know who lived here. Even then, the bats must have really had to pull together for something like this—probably all under Alfred’s watchful eye, of course.
A good amount of the caped community was here for one big Christmas party. Jon and Damian's dads were talking with some other members of the League. Dick and his friends were testing how many ornaments he could juggle before dropping one. From his vantage point, Jon guessed they were up to eight or so. He could see some more of Batman's allies in the hallway, Kate and Duke sitting on the stairs chatting, Harper, Cass, and Steph giggling over something on their phones. Conner was hanging out with Tim and the rest of their Titans team, while Jon and Damian sat on the couch with their own Titans playing Super Smash Bros.
"Again?" Gar whined, throwing his hands up.
"Man, you gotta let someone else win every once in a while," Wally added, already resigned. He and Gar sat on the floor, Damian on the couch with Emiko on one side and Jon on the other. Raven sat on Jon's other side, her controller floating in front of her, most of her attention taken up by her drink and her book.
Damian shrugged. "Emiko wins sometimes. So does Raven, when she's paying attention."
"We mean you should let one of us win for once!" Gar wailed.
"You'd win if you were good at the game."
"You little sh—"
"Hey, hey, hey." Jon put a hand on Gar's shoulder to keep him from lunging at Damian. "We are not having a brawl on Christmas."
"But it would be so entertaining," Emiko said disappointedly.
"He is kinda right, though," Raven piped up, not taking her eyes off of her book. "Just get better at the game and maybe you'll win."
"Et tu, RaeRae?" Gar looked up at her, looking like a sad puppy. Literally. He had turned into a little green puppy and was staring up at her pathetically.
Raven wasn't even phased, just turned a page in her book. Jon snorted.
Gar turned back, but the pout remained.
Just then, somebody wolf whistled, and everyone in the room turned to the culprit: Tim. And once everybody saw who it was, they followed his line of sight, right over to Jon and Damian. Jon suddenly felt very vulnerable, which was ironic in of itself, shrinking in on himself a bit while he tried to figure out why everybody was staring at him.
"Hey, Rob." Gar grinned toothily, staring at the space above their heads. Damian's face turned beet red, and Jon looked up to see Kon floating over them, dangling what was unmistakably mistletoe over their heads.
Damian crossed his arms haughtily, pulling a leg closer to his body, clearly trying to downplay his embarrassment. "Tt. As if anyone would partake in your childish holiday games."
Jon couldn't help but laugh. He leaned over, pressing a quick peck to Damian's cheek. "Merry Christmas, Damian." Somehow, Damian's face had managed to turn a deeper shade of red, and he looked away as he pulled his other leg onto the couch.
"Tt. Whatever." Then, when the room had once again filled with chatter and they were about to start another round of Smash, Jon heard Damian mutter a quiet, "Merry Christmas, Jon."
-
Their first Christmas in their new apartment wasn't looking too shabby, if you asked Jon. He was quite satisfied with the way everything was decorated, by the lights laid out on the TV stand, the tree in the corner letting off a soft glow. Of course, Damian was a perfectionist, so obviously everything would look perfect.
Damian walked out of the kitchen with a mug of hot chocolate, sweater sleeves pulled over his hands, and plopped on the couch next to Jon. He pulled the blanket over his bare legs and tucked himself under Jon’s arm, turning his attention to the Hallmark movie Jon had put on. Jon still didn’t understand the point of wearing shorts with a sweater, and when asked, Damian would just shrug.
He leaned his head on Damian’s, nursing his own mug of hot chocolate. “This is nice,” he said, squeezing Damian a bit tighter.
“Arguable. This movie is maybe mediocre at best,” Daman replied, a smirk audible in his voice.
Jon rolled his eyes. “I don’t mean the movie and you know it.” Damian snorted. “I mean this. You. Me. Us. It’s nice.”
“You’re such a sap,” Damian said, turning his face further into Jon’s chest. “But I agree with the sentiment. I must admit, this is nice.” He played idly with the hem of Jon’s shirt, and Jon pressed a kiss to his head as the movie continued to play.
As the credits rolled, Jon stood up, earning him a whine, with grabby hands following after him as Damian flopped the rest of the way onto the couch. Jon chuckled, walking over to the tree and picking up a small box. He brought it back over to the couch, and Damian’s eyebrows scrunched. “It’s only Christmas Eve,” he pointed out.
“Yeah,” Jon agreed, “but I think you deserve to open one tonight. I hope you like it.” He smiled, holding the box out to his boyfriend.
Damian took the box gingerly, undoing the ribbon carefully and lifting the lid. He pulled out a silver charm bracelet, laying it out on his palm so that he could look at the charms. They were small, nothing fancy, just disks with their initials and a pair of green and blue jewels. “Like I said before, you’re a sap,” Damian told him, but he was smiling. “I love it, thank you.”
He pulled Jon in for a kiss, hand on the back of his neck, fingers tangling in his hair. When they pulled away, Jon gestured to the bracelet, and Damian held out his hand as Jon did the clasp.
Damian smiled. “It’s beautiful. Thank you again.”
“You’re welcome,” Jon said, taking his hands. “Merry Christmas, Damian.”
“Merry Christmas, Jon.”
-
Damian's never been one for mornings. So when sunlight spills in through the window, all he does is roll over and push his face into the pillow. It smells like lemon scented shampoo.
The bed dips behind him, and strong arms wrap around his waist, pulling him close to a warm body. Damian relaxes into it.
“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Jon mumbles into his skin, nuzzling into his neck.
Damian pulls Jon’s arms tighter around him, and he feels Jon press a kiss into his shoulder. “Morning, love,” he replies drowsily, his voice still thick with sleep. He twists and rolls over in Jon’s arms to face him, reaching up to brush a lock of hair from Jon’s face. Jon hums, pulling him in for a kiss.
“Daddy! Baba!” a little voice screeches from down the hallway. “Santa was here, Santa was here! Wake up, wake up, Santa was here!”
Damian groans, turning his face back into the pillows. Jon just chuckles. “Your son is calling.”
“Before 8 AM, he’s your son.”
“Was that a Lion King reference? Color me impressed.”
“Ari! Ari, Santa came!”
Damian sits up at that, Jon’s arms falling to his lap. “Sebastian Phillip Wayne-Kent, do not wake your sister up this early in the morning!”
Jon sits up next to him and drags a hand down his face. “It’s too late, she’s awake.”
An excited shriek sounds from Aria’s bedroom, and Damian sighs into his hands. “You heard her, Hayseed. I’m going back to sleep.”
“You can’t go back to sleep, you have to see what Santa brought you,” Jon teases. Damian flops back onto the bed.
“Nope, it’s too early for this, goodnight.”
Too quick for him to process, Damian is standing in Aria’s room, the excited and very awake toddler standing up in her crib, jumping and bouncing. “That’s cheating!” he calls out the door. Jon just cackles from down the hall.
“Ba!” Aria smacks him on the chest.
“Alright, alright, let’s go, you little terror. Santa came last night.” Damian lifts her out of the crib and settles her on his hip, making his way downstairs, the smell of pancakes, eggs, toast, and coffee flooding his nose. Of course Jon already made breakfast. He continues to the living room, where Jon is just barely managing to restrain Bash from opening anything too soon.
When he sees Damian he finally lets go, and Bash zooms over to the tree, floating around as he looks for which gifts are for him. Seeing Bash’s excitement and wanting to follow suit, Aria wriggles free from Damian’s arms and Jon has to use his superspeed to catch her before she hits the floor.
Damian sighs and drops onto the couch beside Jon, watching Aria toddle after Bash, trying to keep up.
“Look, Ari, this one’s for you!” Bash holds out a large box that’s almost as big as Aria. Damian knows there’s a doll in that one.
“Yay!” Aria sits down on the floor with it and starts ripping it open, and Bash finds one to tear open for himself.
“Hey.” Jon gets his attention and holds out a small box, a dopey smile on his face. Damian takes the box gingerly, taking off the lid. It’s a new ID tag clip for his scrubs, with a rubber cartoon cat. He laughs.
“Thank you, habibi, it’s perfect.” Jon clears his throat and glances up for a second, and Damian follows his gaze to where Jon is dangling a piece of mistletoe above their heads. Jon looks at him expectantly, and Damian laughs as he leans in.
“Eeewww,” Bash cuts in, making a disgusted face at them.
“Eeww!” Aria echoes happily, scrunching her nose in an attempt to copy her brother.
Jon rests their foreheads together as they laugh. He looks up at Damian through his lashes and says, “Merry Christmas, Damian.”
Damian smiles. “Merry Christmas, Jon.”

Art and Design Contexts and Research
1. Fine Art, Film and Cinema
Fine Art:
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Catlett, Target, 1970
In 1915, Elizabeth Catlett (the granddaughter of freed enslaved people) was born in Washington, D.C. and unflinchingly depicted the violent reality of racial injustice throughout her career. Catlett’s decision to focus on her ethnic identity, and its association with slavery and class struggles, was bold and unconventional in the 1930s and 1940s when African Americans were expected “to assimilate themselves into a more Eurocentric ethic,”. She confronted the most disturbing injustices against African Americans, including lynchings and beatings, as she was confident that art could foster social change. She also portrayed civil rights leaders — Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Angela Davis and Malcolm X — as well as the courage and resilience of everyday African-Americans, particularly women. She “always wanted my (her) art to service my (Black) people — to reflect us, to relate to us, to stimulate us, to make us aware of our potential,”. She believed that “We have to create an art for liberation and for life.” Target and Black Unity (1968), a raised fist carved in mahogany, are two of the most iconic and lasting artworks in the continuing movement for civil rights.
The signifier is the cross hairs of a rifle sight framing the head of an African-American (Black) man mounted on a block of wood. It was created in response to the fatal shooting of two Black Panthers, Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, by Chicago police officers. The signified is to highlight the fact that research shows that young Black men are far more likely to be killed by police than other Americans. It also dates back to the Civil War era when rifle scopes entered into widespread use or to the present day where more up to date weapons are used as well as choke holds and physical restraints. I have discovered that artwork can have an ever lasting impact on the world as it can still be very much relevant years to come. The research has helped me discover the potential in possibly creating a symbol or action that can be used in/to identify a protest in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project. Martha Rosler, Semiotics of the Kitchen, 1975
Martha Rosler’s video is a grainy six minutes that spits in the face of America’s gendered social hierarchy. In a kind of parody (or perhaps anightmarish version) of Julia Child’s cooking shows in the 1960s, Rosler stands in a kitchen, wearing an apron and walks through the alphabet, assigning letters to various objects found there (“A” for “apron,” “B” for “bowl,” “C” for “chopper”) as she holds these objects up to the camera with an eerie lack of expression and emotion. Her movements become increasingly contrived and violent as the video continues on. By the time she gets to “fork,” she’s stabbing at the table aggressively with the utensil. When she arrives at the letter “R,” for “rolling pin,” she thrusts the object at the camera. By the end of the alphabet, she’s brandishing other kitchen tools like weapons, stabbing the air. The video ends with the artist offering an exhausted shrug, an ambiguous gesture that feels less like a resignation of fate and more a way of asking, “What is wrong with us?”.
The signifier is a woman wearing an apron reciting the alphabet while demonstrating objects in the kitchen that correspond with the start of each letter. The signified is to highlight America’s gendered social hierarchy. It also demonstrates women’s frustration with society’s expectation of them being housewives therefore they feel that they are unable to dream big due to being trapped in a cage. I have discovered that artwork can have an ever lasting impact on the world as it can still be very much relevant years to come. The research has helped me discover the potential in possibly creating a symbol or action that can be used in/to identify a protest in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.

Ava DuVernay, When They See Us, 2019
When They See Us is based on a true story that gripped the United States of America, it chronicles the notorious case of five teenagers of colour, labeled the Central Park Five, who were convicted of a rape they did not commit. The four part limited series will focus on the five teenagers from Harlem (Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana and Korey Wise). In the spring of 1989, when the teenagers were first questioned about the incident, the series will span 25 years, highlighting their exoneration in 2002 and the settlement reached with the city of New York in 2014. When They See Us was created by Ava DuVernay, who also co-wrote and directed the four parts. Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King from Participant Media, Oprah Winfrey from Harpo Films, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh from Tribeca Productions executive produce the limited series alongside DuVernay through her banner, Forward Movement. In addition to DuVernay, Attica Locke, Robin Swicord, and Michael Starrburry also serve as writers on the limited series.
The signifier is five teenagers of colour from Harlem, New York sitting in a holding room after being illegally questioned/beaten by NYC police. The signified is to highlight the fact that research shows that Black men are 3.5 more times likely to be falsely accused of a sexual assault crime they did not commit than their white counterparts. It shows how their conviction effected their lives before and after they were exonerated. It also shows how they were all pinned against each other, from the very beginning, just for the sake of convicting someone due to the cases huge media coverage gaining it public attention.
I have discovered that cinema can have an ever lasting impact on an individual as I, myself, and I’m sure many others can relate will remember scenes from this movies years to come and forever carry that anger and heartache for the victims (Antron, Kevin, Yusef, Raymond and Korey). The research has helped me discover the potential in possibly using real life stories of activism (preferably issues that physically or mentally affect us such as domestic abuse, racial injustice or mental health) to create a greater impact and deeper personal connection in result making an everlasting impact on the individual viewing in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.

Hank Willis Thomas, All Power to All People, 2017
Hank Willis Thomas’s “All Power to All People” is an eight-foot-tall Afro pick with a Black Power fist raised to the sky as its handle. It is a response to America’s long history of erecting monuments to racist white men. It was first installed in Philadelphia’s Thomas Paine Plaza, not far from a statue of Frank Rizzo, the city’s former mayor and police commissioner. Starting in 1967, Rizzo presided over a police department that was known across the country for its unhinged racial violence, and when he was elected mayor in 1972, he only helped perpetuate and cover up this violence. The Philadelphia Inquirer cited a grim statistic that “police shot civilians at a rate of one per week between 1970 and 1978,” roughly the period in which Rizzo was running the city. Thomas’s statue was a remarkable rejoinder. Though it was only on view in the plaza for about two months, it has since become a kind of roving monument to equality. Versions of the sculpture have been shown at places ranging from Burning Man to the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the Human Rights Campaign. Meanwhile, after protests over police brutality against Black Americans erupted across the country this summer, Rizzo’s statue was vandalized and, finally, taken down.
The signifier is an eight-foot-tall Afro pick with a Black Power fist raised to the sky as its handle and a peace sign featuring in the middle. The Black Panthers used the slogan "All Power to the People" to protest centuries of racial injustice against Black people in America. The Black Power fist is associated to the Black Power movement that began in 1960. It was a social movement motivated by a desire for safety and self-sufficiency that was not available inside redlined African American neighbourhoods. The signified is to highlight America’s long history of erecting monuments to racist white men. It also shows that white racist men are glorified and rewarded for their racism with a monument. This further adds fuel to the fire as it further adds to the on going disrespect and injustice of Black people.
I have discovered that historical objects (usually frowned upon or used to shame others) relating to ethic groups can be used to celebrate and moralise. The research has helped me discover the potential in using items that cultures were originally shamed for and then culturally appropriated by other races as a way to reclaim them as their own in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.
Tumblr media
Guerrilla Girls, Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met. Museum?, 1989
Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous group of feminist. They are female artists devoted to fighting sexism and racism within the art world. In 1985, the group formed in New York City with the mission of bringing gender and racial inequality into focus within the greater arts community. The group employs culture jamming in the form of posters, books, billboards, and public appearances to expose discrimination and corruption. Members wear gorilla masks and use pseudonyms that refer to deceased female artists to remain anonymous. Their identities are concealed because issues matter more than individual identities, "Mainly, we wanted the focus to be on the issues, not on our personalities or our own work."
The signifier is a nude portrait of a women (in black and white) laying on a purple silk sheet while holding it and wearing a gorilla mask. The purple silk sheet appears as a sex toy on first inspect, on second inspect it appears as a feather duster due to the dark shadows and shape on the sheet creating the effect of bristles but once you take a closer inspection it is clear that the sheet has been made to look this way to truck the mind. Both these items, the sex toy and feather duster, are meant to degrade women and place a stigma around these objects. They are made to shame/put women (down) purely based on the decision they make. The signified is to highlight the fact that less than 5% of the artists in the Modern Art Sections are women but 85% of the nude portraits are female.
I have discovered that objects can be used to deceive the viewer into believing something completely different to what is presented in front of them (intentionally) in other words this would be seen as an illusion of some sort. The research has helped me discover the potential in intentionally deceiving viewers in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.

Act Up (campaign poster), Silence = Death, 1987
In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, the US government and mainstream media infamously ignored the crisis. By the time President Reagan finally uttered the word “AIDS” in 1985, 12,000 Americans had already died. That same year, six men in New York City (Avram Finkelstein, Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston, Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione and Jorge Socarrás) began meeting to privately share their experiences of AIDS-related loss in the absence of public discourse. They were inspired to create something tangible that could spread awareness, they swiftly settled on a poster. They decided that it should have have little (if any) text. Frankielien belied that  “Sentences barely do (work). You need sound bites, catchphrases, crafted in plain language. The poster is exactly that, a sound bite, and vernacular to the core. The poster perfectly suits the American ear. It has a power. If you’ve ever stopped in front of one or turned your head for a second look, that power was at work.” The result of their collaboration was a hot pink triangle (an inverted version of the symbol Nazis used to label gay men) emblazoned on a black background above the slogan “Silence = Death”. It debuted in 1987. The six friends hired wheat-pasters to cover the East Village, West Village, Times Square, Chelsea and the Upper West Side (neighbourhoods chosen to reach both queer audiences and the media) overnight, and the city woke up to what became the most enduring icon of H.I.V./AIDS-related activism. Later that year, on April 15, members of the newly formed activist group AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (Act Up) stormed the city’s General Post Office carrying copies of the sign, solidifying its ongoing centrality to their cause.
The signifier is a black and white poster reading “SILENCE = DEATH” with a hot pink triangle in the centre of the page. The pink triangle draws the viewer in creating a central focus is to highlight the fact that the AIDS epidemic/crisis was infamously ignored by the US government and mainstream media resulting in 12,000 Americans dying before the issue was publicly addressed by the current President (Ronald Reagan) using the word “AIDS” to create a clear and direct message.
I have discovered that using little to any words and a play on historical icons previously used to dehumanise others can create a powerful effect on the viewer causing them to have another look and really focus on the subject matter. The research has helped me discover the potential in reclaiming objects that are used to oppress others and use short snappy catchphrases to grab the attention of others in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.
Semiotics:

Dread Scott, A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday, 2015
From 1920 until 1938, the N.A.A.C.P. would mark lynchings by flying a stark black and white flag reading “A Man Was Lynched Yesterday” from its New York headquarters on Fifth Avenue. The was done to confront the residents of a northern city with the horrifying regularity of these murders. In 1938, the N.A.A.C.P. ceased flying the flag after the organisation’s landlord threatened eviction. In 2015, Dread Scott felt that the banner was just as grimly necessary in the present day United States of America as it had been nearly a century earlier. He produced his own version of the flag, updating the text to read “A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday” in response to the fatal shooting of Walter Scott by a South Carolina police officer. “During the Jim Crow era, Black people were terrorized by lynching…It was a threat that hung over all Black people who knew that for any reason or no reason whatsoever you could be killed and the killers would never be brought to justice,” said Scott. “Now the police are playing the same role of terror that lynch mobs did at the turn of the century.”. The piece became a source of national controversy when it remained on view above the street after a deadly sniper attack on police officers in Dallas, Texas, sparking a wave of threats to the of Jack Shainman Gallery from people who felt that the work encouraged violence against police. The gallery removed the flag and displayed it indoors following pressure from the building owner.
The signifier is a black and white flag reading “A MAN WAS LYNCHED BY POLICE YESTERDAY” hanging from a flag pole. The way in which the piece has been displayed shows a stark resemblance to the topic of discussion on the banner/flag. This is due to the fact that there is a clear link to the action/movement of what would happen to the victim when these acts of hate crime would be carried out. Furthermore, the use of black and white colours symbolise the two races affected not only that but it creates a stark contrast therefore grabbing the attention of others. The signified is to highlight the fact that “A Man Was Lynched by Police Yesterday” (something that has been and still is a common occurrence in America). It also highlights the horrific acts of hate crime and racism that is directed at/towards Black people on a regular basis throughout the world (but more commonly with the USA). These acts of hate crime have been around for centuries however they have changed in the way they are carried out and by whom they are carried out by. Despite this, one thing has remained the same…no punishment is never given.
I have discovered that subtle visual links to the subject matter create a powerful impact. The research has helped me discover the potential in simplistic art pieces in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.
3. Fashion Design, Photography and Promotion
Fashion Design:
Tumblr media
Public School, Make America New York, 2017
Public School creative directors’, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, athleisure-focused show featured sweatshirts with the phrase, "We Need Leaders" on the back. Many of the models wore red baseball caps that parodied Donald Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again" insisting instead that we "Make America New York”. During the finale, the song "This Land Is Your Land" played in the background.
The signifier is a red baseball reading "Make America New York." in white font that has been unpicked creating a distressed look. This imitates the (destructive) style of presidency Donald Trump took on. The signified is to highlight the fact that Donald Trump did not follow the formal style of presidency previous President in America usually follow. It also shows how Donald Trump was unable to lead the country due to the lack of his leadership skills and only ever appeasing to his base in result leaving many Americans unheard.
I have discovered that subtle visual links to well known controversial political figures creates a powerful impact. The research has helped me discover the potential in parody art pieces in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.

Suzie Blake, Blood Mountain, 2019
Suzie Blake created a sculptural installation featuring a 3-meter high mound of red clothing and apparel. In the 3000 kilogram pile are T-shirts displayed slogans like “Girl Power” and “The Future Is Female” which peak out from the crimson clothing. It is displayed like a giant pile of landfill. The clothing is all in the hue of that liquid which runs through our veins and tarnishes our hands when we remain silent on serious issues. Blake created the work in the form of a mountain as it is considered the archetype of ascent and power  ( the bridge between heaven and earth). Her goal was to reimagine this archetype in the form of greed and waste. “Blood Mountain” asks, what is the environmental cost of bloated man-made structures? And what is the role of feminism within such structures? Also, whose empowerment does the current iteration of the feminist movement serve? And since when did we think it was acceptable for brands to piggyback on our movement?
The signifier is a sculptural installation featuring a 3-meter high mound of red clothing and apparel. The signified is to highlight the fact that the fast fashion industry is the second biggest polluter after oil. It also brings attention to the fat that most garment workers are women, or sometimes girls  (around 85%) who get paid on average $3 a day. It also raises a set of questions in the viewer’s head such as “What is the environmental cost of man-made structures?”, “What is the role of feminism within such structures?”, “Also, whose empowerment does the current iteration of the feminist movement serve?” and “And since when did we think it was acceptable for brands to piggyback on our movement?”.
I have discovered that pairing well known objects (that are associated with a topic) and subtle objects that imply the effect the topic has on humans creates a powerful and clear message while opening viewers’ eyes to situations that were overshadowed. The research has helped me discover the potential in direct but subtle art pieces in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project. Promotion:

Vivienne Westwood, Homo Loquax A/W 19 LFW, 2019
Vivienne Westwood is renowned for seamlessly amalgamating fashion and activism, having used her platform over the years to protest a whole range of issues, from fracking to austerity. Westwood had models wear clothes with slogans berating politicians while protests about the environmental impact of London Fashion Week took place. She sent models down the catwalk wearing aprons and tabards with anti-consumerist and climate change slogans. The show happened at the same time as environmental action group Extinction Rebellion organised protests at several of London Fashion Week venue's to highlight the throwaway nature of the fashion industry. Models also held microphones and spoke to the audience in a theatrical display, urging one another to buy less and pontificating on the consequences of consumerism. A model paused on the runway to say that Brexit was a crime, while another took a jibe at American foreign policy. The clothes themselves were as avant-garde as one would expect of a Vivienne Westwood collection.
The signifier is a collection of clothes featuring slogans berating politicians. The collection also featured a set of playing cards that illustrate a plan to save the world from climate change. The signified is to promote the dangers of climate change, Brexit and capitalism. It also shows that fashion is all about styling: buy less, choose well, make it last.
I have discovered that using a global stage to speak out on issues that affect the world as a whole can deliver a strong and direct message. The research has helped me discover the potential in using fashion as a political message/statement in identifying opportunities for progressing with the project.

The production was a hybrid of a film and a live show. Bruce scowled at the monitor in front of him, tapping idly at the edge of the desk. These pieces weren't coming together. It wasn't right.
"Did that monitor piss you off, Bruce?"
Bruce sighed, turning to look behind him at Clark, who had, unsurprisingly, let himself in to the cave.
"No. This case."
Clark hummed softly, walking over. He put a hand on the back of Bruce's seat, leaning down to pick up his teacup and sip from him.
"Hnng," Bruce grumbled, eyes tracking his hand as it slid back into view to put the cup down.
"What are you working on anyway?"
Clark's hand slid from the back of the chair onto Bruce's shoulder.
"Some financial files aren't adding up for a suspect. He's having more expenses then income, and yet isn't in debt."
"So he's getting cash from somewhere."
"Yes, but what."
Clark opened his mouth but Bruce ignored him and kept talking.
"Why are you here?"
"Jason called me, actually."
Bruce's eyebrow shot up, and he sat back in his seat, turning to face Clark.
"Did he now?"
"Yup. Wanted help on a homework assignment."
"Why didn't he ask me?"
"Said something about the broody bat being too consumed with work. . . That and he thought a reporter might be more helpful with a research paper then a billionaire Playboy."
Bruce scoffed. Clark still had his hand on the back of the chair, but since they were facing each other, this meant Clark was practically leaning over him.
"Am I a Playboy?" He inquired, eyebrow raising again.
"No. Not really. But you like to pretend to be. Something about a cover?" Clark asked, leaning in closer to press a kiss to Bruce's forehead.
Bruce grunted.
"I gotta get upstairs, I just wanted to stop and say hi first."
"Are you going to be spending the night then?"
"Geesh, I dunno, I have work in the morning."
Bruce liked to think he kept his face neutral, just kept his eyebrow raised and tilted his head slightly, blinking up at Clark.
"Dang, you don't gotta pout," Clark laughed. "I guess I can stay, but don't expect me to be here when you wake up."
"I wasn't pouting."
Clark just laughed again, bending to kiss Bruce softly. Bruce just titled his face up into it, but otherwise made no attempt to reciprocate. Clark pulled away and shook his head softly.
"Ah, I forgot. Batman doesn't do emotions."
He was grinning slightly, but it didn't reach his eyes. He started to straighten, but Bruce snapped his hand out quickly and snagged Clark's belt, holding him in place. Now it was Clark's turn to raise an eyebrow.
"Clark. . ."
"Yes dear?"
Dear, darling, babe, sugar, honey, boo, and other various petnames Clark had for him.
"Don't be dramatic," Bruce huffed out, reaching up to hook his fingers in the collar of Clark's shirt and pull the man down for another kiss.
"Pot, meet Kettle," Clark murmured softly, just barely loud enough for Bruce to hear before they were kissing again.
He may have bit Clark's lip in retaliation.
"I'm gonna go help Jason now. Be safe. Call if you need anything."
Clark gave him one last quick kiss before pulling away. Bruce watched him turn and walk away, to the stairs up into the mansion. He just shook his head fondly and turned back to glaring at his monitor.
Surprisingly, Jason never joined him that night.
He didn't call back to the cave to question it, figured the boy was doing school, which was good. He was too far behind.
Bruce himself didn't get back until well after 1am, and even then that was just because he had to go to work tomorrow as well.
He spent a few minutes logging a few reports into the computer before stripping and showering, and then heading up to the mansion. Alfred was waiting with a hot meal, so he ate, sitting in the kitchen and staring at the floor.
"Clark?"
"I believe he is in your room, reading," Alfred explained, cleaning up dishes.
"Jason?"
"Already asleep. Poor lad was exhausted from all the studying he and Mister Clark did."
Bruce grunted acknowledgement, finishing his food and passing the plate over.
"Good night, Alfred."
"Good night, Master Bruce. Sleep well."
Bruce turned and trudged his way upstairs. He was exhausted and his body ached. But sure enough, when he pushed the door open, he found one Clark Kent sat in bed, reading a book that he had likely stolen from the downstairs library.
"Oh, the mighty hero returns."
Bruce grunted out a greeting, shutting the door behind him. He started undressing as he walked, stripping down to his boxers and crawling into bed beside Clark, laying on his side with his back to him.
"Long night?"
Bruce just grunted again.
Clark chuckled at him, setting the book down and then flicking off the light. He slipped an arm around Bruce and pressed into his back, chin on his shoulder.
"No good night kiss?"
"No."
"Harsh."
Bruce smirked lightly, opening his eyes and looking up to find Clark Kent's stupid face grinning at him.
"Fine. One good night kiss."
One good night kiss turned into two, and then three, and then pushed past kissing.
"I see why you wanted me to spend the night now," Clark teased, later, pulling Bruce up against him once more.
Bruce just let him, too exhausted to be anything more then deadweight in Clark's arms. Not that it bothered Clark any.
"Shut up, Smallville."
Clark laughed softly in Bruce's ear, nuzzling at his neck.
"Good night, Bruce."
"Good night, Clark. Make sure Jason wakes up in time?"
Clark hummed an affirmative, then dropped his head to the pillow, falling asleep stupidly quick. Bruce just sighed and settled in against his boyfriends chest, hoping sleep would come for him that easily.

Teen and up audiences
Major character death
Damijon (more implied)
Main POV: Damian Wayne
In progress, 3925 words and counting
In their line of work, Damian should have expected this. He should have known, that not even the Son of Steel would be safe. He should have been prepared. He shouldn't have let himself get so attached.
But he did. And now he was losing one of the most important things to him, and who's fault is that?
Damian didn't expect to lose his best friend at so young. He didn't even expect to have a best friend. But now he'd do anything to get him back.
He might even get that wish, in the end.
Thanks to @legitpumpkin for betaing!
