It never rains in Texas, but it did on the morning of Sy’s inevitable departure. Heavy clouds hung low in the sky as an early morning fog rolled in through the treeline. Bright, angry streaks of lightning raced across the sky and casted shadows through the room. A loud crash of thunder shook the old tin roof and startled him awake. In his moment of panic, Sy sat up straight and knocked the headboard into the wall behind the bed with a loud crack. It took him a second to recognize his surroundings in the dark, but once he did, he breathed a sigh of relief. A quick glance at the alarm clock on the nightstand beside him made his shoulders drop. 4:45am. Sy reached out and turned it off, as not to disturb his lover tucked so sweetly beneath the quilt beside him. That girl could sleep through a hurricane. A little fall of rain wouldn’t bother her much. Leaving over, he kissed the top of her head and lingered there, but only for a moment. Long enough to memorize the way she smelled. Honeysuckle and vanilla. Fuck, he’ll miss her.
Sy moved to plant his feet on the floor and ran a hand down his tired face. The last two weeks have been…a little less than ideal. It was his fault, really. He’d gotten the orders to ship out almost a month ago, but waited a while to tell her about them. He didn’t know what to say or how to say it. Things were just getting good here. Things were still so fun and new, but as always, Uncle Sam had other plans for him.
The first person he told was his mama. When he did, she barely flinched. Sy made the third generation of Syverson men who’d stormed courageously into war. His daddy served in Vietnam, his papaw in World War II. When duty called, they answered. It wasn’t easy, watching him walk out the door, never knowing if he’ll make it home again, but she’d made peace with it by now. “What good does it do fer me ta’ worry? Either you’ll come back, or ya wont. It’s in the Lord’s hands now.”
Sy trod lightly off to the bathroom to start the shower. The room filled with steam, just enough to fog the mirror as stood beneath the steady stream and let it run over his head. Staring down at his feet, he let the water consume him. Heavy drops clung to his lashes, but he didn’t bother to blink them away. His mind was somewhere else. With someone else.
__
Sy had always been a steak-and-potatoes kinda guy, but he’d barely touched his plate. Every bite felt too heavy in his stomach, like he’d traded out his ribeye for a hunk of lead instead. She’d spent so much time cooking for him, springing for only the best of meat and the freshest produce the grocery store had to offer. The least he could do was clear his plate. Lord knew when he’d get another meal like this again.
Once he’d managed to choke it down, he stood and started grabbing dishes to take to the sink, but she stopped him quickly. She’d barely said a word all night, and her interjection almost startled him. “No, baby,” she whispered, taking the plate from his hands. “Let me get those.”
Merrin kept her back to him as she filled the kitchen sink with hot, soapy water. Steam fogged the window above as she drifted off in thought. She was a million miles away from here, swimming in regret and longing for just a little more time. There was so much to do, so much to say, but the words never came out right. She hadn’t even realized she was crying until the tears began to blur her vision. Closing her eyes, she gave in and let them spill down her face. She’d fought so hard to keep her distance. To brace herself for the inevitable. In the end, she’d fallen hard. Harder than she’d ever expected to; head over heels and still tumbling. She braced herself against the sink and let her head hang low, covering her mouth to muffle the sobs that bubbled up from her trembling chest.
When a hand reached out to touch her shoulder, she gasped. Looking up again, Merrin stared into the reflection of his eyes in the pane of glass before them. Calloused fingertips brushed her hair to the side, then traced along the side of her delicate throat. His voice was low and deep, a rumbling baritone pressed against her back as he broke the silence.
“I’m not gone yet. Gimme one more night. Just one more night, alone with you.”
Merrin sniffled softly, wiped her eyes with the back of her hand and nodded. From there, Sy wasted no time. Most of the dishes made it into the sink, but a broken glass was the last thing on his mind when he placed her onto the countertop. Shoving his way between her open knees, his lips were hot and harsh as they crashed into hers. If she didn’t know any better, she might think he was angry with her. In truth, Sy was angry; angry at their situation, angry at the world, but not at her. Never at her.
He grabbed her up, one hand on the back of the neck and the other wrapped around her thigh, squeezing with a force hard enough to leave a bruise. The pain turned into pleasure, the aggression turned to lust, and Merrin returned the favor with shared fervor. She wasn’t scared of him. On the contrary, she relished in his smothering presence, digging perfectly manicured nails into the meat of his shoulder as she drew him in just as close. Her mouth worked with his in a haphazard clash of teeth and tongue. Even in the mess, there was still beauty to be found. She was soft and sweet where he was rough and hungry. A yin to a yang, souls intertwined as one.
His shirt hit the floor first, and her sundress followed soon after. Merrin grabbed him by the belt and yanked until his hips pressed sharply into her own. They worked together to loosen the buckle and pop the button beneath it, ripping it from the loops and tossing it away to clatter to the floor. Rough hands came up to cup her breasts, bare and warm, a perfect fit for each palm. He squeezed gently and smirked against her neck, relishing in her pleads for more.
“Clay,” she whispered, clinging to him as he dropped his head to nuzzle against one hardened nipple, then the other. Always one to please, he licked his lips and welcomed one into his mouth. He took his time, gazing up through thick lashes as he moved from one breast to the other. She looked like an angel, basking in the glow of the sunset that poured in around her. But Merrin was no saint, far from it, and couldn’t stand his temptation for long. She let a hand fall between them to meet the bulge in his jeans and palmed it gently. She could almost feel the ache beneath the distressed denim; a steady, throbbing need that seeked relief that only she could provide. The words came before she could stop them. “Fuck me, Clay.”
Sy mumbled a gruff “Yes ma’am” into the flesh of her breasts and tugged himself free from his boxers. Never one to keep his lady waiting, he hooked a finger into the gusset of her panties and pulled them to the side. The sight of her wet heat made his mouth water. Any other time, he’d drop to his knees right then and there to have his fill, but it wasn’t what they needed the most right now. Right now, he needed to be inside of her, just as much as she needed to feel him there. He held the base of his erection and traced the swollen head through her folds, mouth agape and almost drooling as his eyes rolled to the back of his head in ecstasy.
“Fuck, honey. So wet for me.”
She gasped when the tip of his cock caught at her slick opening. The delicious burn from the stretch she felt as he pushed forward inside of her stole the breath from her lungs. They both watched as he crossed the threshold and buried himself deep inside of her. Breathy moans and whimpers of lust echoed through the room, and Sy took a moment to let her catch her breath again.
“Fuck, baby…”
She met his gaze once more, eyes wide and full of fire as she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him down for another kiss. Sy tangled his fingers in the hair at the nape of her neck, choosing to indulge her for a while, until he just couldn’t take it anymore. His retreat was nice and slow, but he didn’t pull out all of the way. Tugging her head back roughly, he buried his face in the crook of her neck and relished in the way she tensed around him. Nipping at her throat, he growled against her pulse and smirked. “So tight, honey. I’m not gonna last long.”
She answered with the rake of her nails down his back, leaving tender, pink lines in their wake, then dug them into the flesh of his bare ass. Shoving herself back onto his cock, she groaned loudly.
“Don’t tease me, Clay. I need you.”
That was all the encouragement he needed. With a harsh thrust of his hips, he bottomed out completely. Sy held her down by the waist as he took what he wanted from her. In and out, over and over, he pounded into her with a fervor she’d never seen before. Their lust was wild and sinful as he stood there at the counter and fucked her into a mindless mess. A familiar tightness built somewhere deep in her gut, and before she could warn him, she was coming undone. Her eyes filled with tears, filled with so much emotion, then spilled down her cheeks in hot, furious streams.
It didn’t stop there. He had her again on the couch, and again against the front door, then once more upstairs in their room. The bed creaked under their shifting weight. Sweat poured from his face as he held one of her legs over his shoulder. Merrin clung to the sheets beneath her as he approached another climax. Just when she thought she couldn’t handle any more, he proved her wrong.
“Come on, sugar,” he begged, wiped his brow with the back of his hand and picked up the pace. “Gimme one more. Just one more.”
He’d been saying that for hours, but this time, he was telling the truth. His muscles ached and cramped, his body pleaded with him to give it up, but he was determined to make this a night to remember. He’d be gone for God knows how long; he wanted to make sure she’d had her fill before he left. Sy kept his promise and within seconds, he crashed over the edge of climax right along with her. Chests heaving and voices hoarse, they rode out their highs together and collapsed into a heap of tangled limbs. Sy stared up at the ceiling as he fought to regain composure and felt her curl up against his side.  “Shit.”
“Yeah. Me too.”
Merrin held up a hand up and they smacked palms, victorious in their conquest. All qualms were forgotten, at least for a little while.
“High five.”
“Good sex.”
__
Standing at the sink, a towel wrapped around his waist, Sy stared at himself in the mirror. He scratched at his chin and turned his head from side to side, then flipped the switch on the side of the clippers. The first pass up the underside of his chin took off most of the length. He dusted a tuft of fuzz from the guards and let it fall into the basin before him. Sy made quick work of taking it all off, then grabbed the shaving cream to smooth over the stubble left behind. He moved with a surgeon's precision, each drag of the razor taking away the foam and leaving baby-smooth skin behind. Once he was finished, he bent down and filled his hands with warm water to wash his face. Just as he reached for the aftershave in the medicine cabinet, two delicate arms wrapped around his middle and squeezed gently. He brought one of them up and pressed her knuckles to his lips, kissing them as he spoke.
“What’re you doin’ up?”
Merrin yawned against his back and nuzzled her face there. Her eyes were heavy with the sleep that she just couldn’t shake. He reached back to run his fingers through her hair, twirling and twisting strands of amber around calloused fingertips as they stood in a shared silence. She raked her nails through the hair on his chest and dug them into hardened flesh, putting up a weak fight to keep him there for just a little while longer. “Couldn’t sleep,” was all she said as another roll of thunder echoed somewhere off in the distance. Sy glanced back at her from over his shoulder and found her staring up at him. She traced his cheekbone and down to the line of his jaw, mesmerized by the clean-shaven stranger who stood before her now.
“Most men grow a beard to hide their faces. You, though…” she pressed her thumb into the dimple on his chin. “You’ve got nothing to hide.”
She left him there with a gentle pat to the chest, then turned to head back into the bedroom. He watched her as she went, wearing nothing but the cheeky little splash of ink that was tatted across the dimples on her lower back and the panties that rested beneath them. A drunken mistake from Spring Breaks of old, left to peak from beneath low-rise jeans as a reminder of wilder days. Sy chuckled to himself and shook his head. He could hardly handle her now; if they’d met back then, he could only imagine the trouble she’d get him into. She’d have eaten him alive.
__
To his dismay, traffic was fairly light on their way to the airport. The skies above were a dusty shade of blue, vast and empty as the rising sun chased away the rain. Fields of wheat and grain blurred past on either side as they left their sleepy little town in the rear view. Sy drove with one hand on the wheel and the other resting in her lap. Every now and then he’d hold her thigh, knead and squeeze, then cut his eyes from the road and over to her in silent reassurance. Every radio station from here to Houston seemed to play nothing but love songs, and each one salted the wound just a little bit more. Merrin tried to surf from station to station, genre to genre, but eventually gave up, so they rode in silence instead.
Sy didn’t mind the quiet. It felt more honest than anything he could say now. “It’ll be alright, honey.” “We’ll write every day.” “I’ll be home before you know it.” He couldn’t guarantee anything, and they both knew that.
Once they’d made it past security, Sy found a bench to sit on and dropped his bag at his feet. When he looked over to her, she was staring off somewhere in the distance, a million miles away again. To her, this felt like punishment. Like the universe had nothing better to do than shit on the best relationship she’d ever had. Karma had finally caught up to her, and this was how she was meant to pay for her transgressions.
“This isn’t fair.”
Clayton sighed and took her hand into his. “I’m sorry, darlin’. Life isn’t–” She cut him off.
“Don’t you dare tell me that life isn’t fair. I know life isn’t fair. This is…” Merrin shook her head. “This is cruel.”
He tried to smile, to crack a joke, to lighten the mood, but one look at her shut it all down. She was right. He’d been on the verge of hanging it up, of finally giving in and taking that cushy desk job at base to be closer to his mama, but his pride had gotten in the way. He knew he had at least one more deployment in him. One more, and he’d give it up for good. He just wasn’t expecting it to be so soon.
Everything had changed, now that he had Merrin. She was everything that he wasn’t. Gentle, but not easy to mislead; Stubborn, but only when necessary;  Kind-hearted to those in need; and so fucking sweet. Now, he fought for her. If this it took to keep her safe, he’d do it in a heartbeat. Now, he had someone worth fighting for.
Wrapping her up tightly, Sy held her to his chest and buried his face in her hair. He pressed a fierce kiss to the top of her head and let his eyes close for a moment. They held each other just like that until his flight was called. Then they walked the Green Mile all the way down to the gate, where he pulled her aside and took her hands into both of his. His eyes searched hers desperately in a last ditch effort to commit them to memory. Shades of blue and green, specks of gold around the iris, as wild as the tide and as vast as the sea. When he kissed her, it was deep and lascivious. He didn’t care who saw. Fuck ‘em. Let them look. Sy broke his kiss and pressed his forehead to hers, dug the end of his crooked nose into her cheek and breathed her in for as long as he could.
“I love you, Merrin Paige. More than you’ll ever know.”
His words stole the breath from her chest. Three little words she never expected to hear him say. Three little words that paralyzed her, right where she stood. He kissed her cheek one last time, grabbed his bags, and headed off to catch his flight. Merrin watched from the window as the plane taxied at the end of the runway. A light drizzle began to sputter outside, just enough to blur her vision as the plane disappeared high into the clouds. Just like that, he was gone.
It never rains in Texas, but it did on the morning of Sy’s inevitable departure. It never rains in Texas, and today, Merrin hated the rain.
__
Far from home, Sy checked his watch as he waited for the line to ring. Static crackled in his ear as he cradled the phone between his head and his shoulder. 2pm in Baqubah; 10pm in Houston. If he was right, she’d still be up. Probably curled up in bed with a book, one of those dirty little romances she liked so much. Leaning back in his chair, he stretched and moaned. If Texas was hot, then this was hell.
Then, a click. The old desk chair groaned when he sat up straight. He listened for a moment, waiting for someone to answer, then checked the signal to make sure that the call had gone through. Fuck. Don’t let it be the answering machine.
“Sy?” a sweet voice chirped over the static. He sighed, relieved, and smiled widely at the sound of his name.
“Yeah, baby,” he breathed. “It's me. How’s it–”
She cut him off. What she had to say couldn’t wait.
“I love you too.”

The Flight Attendant!Klaus and Pilot!Dave AU slow burn enemies-to-lovers smutty (eventually) super cheesy rom com no one asked for
Tumblr media
A/N: I know, I know. This is pure self-indulgent drivel and some of you are waiting on the next chapter of Chained (it’s coming, I swear!) But I’m just really in love with this nonsense fic and I can’t help myself. No regrets.
Acknowledgements: Thanks to @allisoooon for the beautiful Photoshop work (see above) and the EnKlave crew for encouraging the incorrigible.
Warning: Tray tables must be stowed in the upright position before landing
SNIPPET from Chapter 3: Lila was right. Klaus doesn’t have any real power. Airlines have a hierarchy and Klaus is very much at the bottom of the aviation food chain. It doesn’t help that he’s constantly skating on thin ice around Eudora and the rest of the crew, turning up late for pre-flight briefings and trying to hide the bags under his eyes with a dab of carefully applied concealer pickpocketed from duty free. He’s sure everyone thinks he’s a screw-up. Well, everyone apart from Lila, of course, with whom his reputation for hard-drinking and not-so-hard-working was forged in the first place.
Nevertheless, he’s found ways to make New Guy’s life miserable through petty acts of retribution, providing Klaus with an endless source of entertainment. He has, for example, never served New Guy a hot cup of coffee. He always makes sure to give New Guy’s soda a good shake before handing it to him. He arranges 3am wake-up calls to New Guy’s hotel room on layovers and he once bribed a housekeeper to put a red sock in with New Guy’s laundry. One night in Vegas, Klaus even sent an elderly hooker up to his room.
But the lynchpin of his revenge strategy came to him in a flash of inspiration during one of New Guy’s first flights with the crew. The pilots take turns to eat and Klaus had been bringing Geoff his evening meal when it happened.
“Here we go. Brought you your favourite - ribeye steak with fondant potato,” Klaus had said, placing the tray in front of the moustachioed older pilot. “And I swiped you an extra chocolate mousse from first class.”
As Geoff had settled in to begin his meal, New Guy had sniffed the air and raised an eyebrow, inspecting his colleague’s food with interest.
“Hey, that looks good. You got another one of those?” he’d asked Klaus.
And that’s when it came to him. Divine, vengeful inspiration.

Chop It Like It’s Hot
Chapter 2: Goodness Gracious, Great Balls of Fire
@lumosinlove Thank you for your lovely characters! This has been so fun to write. :)
Hope you guys enjoy!
Chop It Like It’s Hot Masterlist
Leo took one look one look at his co-star slumped at a table in the break room and changed his trajection to include a stop at the coffee machine. “Morning, Dorcas.”
“You’re not allowed to talk right now.”
He laughed under his breath, pressing the espresso button and opening the fridge to look for any non-expired milk products. “Talking is a big part of our job, you know.”
“Does it look like I’m on the clock right now?”
Leo hummed noncommittally, stirring some whole milk into the coffee before sliding it across the table to Dorcas. “Rough night?”
She grabbed the mug and took a tentative sip. Her shoulders relaxed fractionally and she let out a relieved sigh. “I forgot that you actually know how to make office coffee taste good.”
“I’m offended that you doubted me.” Leo took the empty seat next to her. “Now what happened?”
Dorcas looked down at her hands wrapped tightly around her mug, expression carefully neutral. “I broke up with her.” She laughed humorlessly. “I knew it wasn’t working for a while now, so I don’t understand why I’m so upset about it. Our schedules never lined up and we never really saw each other anymore. So I figured it was best to do it now instead of dragging it out.”
Leo knew she wasn’t one for physical affection, so he just sat by her side. “Still hurts, though. She was a big part of your life for a while now; it’s ok to be upset about it, no matter what the circumstances of the breakup are.”
“Yeah.”
“You’re going to be ok. Might not feel like it right now, but you’re as tough as they come.”
“Relationships are shit.”
“Breakups are shit.” Leo corrected gently.
“You know, sometimes people just want to feel like shit for a while. You don’t have to try and fix everything all the time.” She said, but her voice was teasing instead of accusatory. “How are you not emotionally exhausted all the time?”
“A lifetime of practice and sheer force of will.”
Dorcas laughed and shoved him away. “You suck.”
“If you want someone to just rant to, I can definitely make room for that tonight. You can experiment with your cocktail recipes, then get unbelievably drunk off them and trash talk all night.”
“You just want free drinks.”
“Consider it payment for the coffee and pep talk.” He said, rising to his feet. “Come on, we should get to the studio.”
She smiled and followed Leo out the door. “If there’s one thing guaranteed to cheer me up, it’s watching other people fail spectacularly at cooking.”
Dorcas got the cue from the director and started their cooking segment. “Recruits, today I’ll be showing you how to make perfectly-done mashed potatoes, and chef Leo will be teaching you how to make bone-in ribeye. Make sure you’re taking notes – you can use those when you attempt to recreate this dish later today.” There was a frantic flurry of movement as everyone took their notepads out and tried to find their pens.
“All right,” Leo grabbed a large slab of ribeye from the ingredients counter with both hands and heaved it onto the front table. Several recruits flinched back while others looked sick at the sight of their meat actually resembling the animal it came from. He bit back a smile and picked up a butcher’s knife.
God, he loved this job.
“So we’re just going to cut these and then you’re going to take a towel and just basically tear this portion of the meat off in one big piece. You see that? Then we’re going to add oil to a hot pan and drop the steak in.” The sizzling sound of the Maillard reaction filled the room. “We’re going to be basting this with thyme and half a stick of butter once the meat is cooked.”
A frantic whisper of “What the hell is basting?” rose up as Dorcas took over the lead, starting by bringing water to a boil and then waiting for it to reduce to a simmer. Leo watched as several of the recruits’ eyes glazed over, completely lost as Dorcas peeled potatoes in quick, practiced movements.
Leo recognized Logan’s voice as it carried from his spot in the crowd. “Do they have a medic on this show?”
“I hope so.” Finn murmured back.
“Our steak is done now. See the color on that?” Leo grabbed the steak with a pair of tongs and held it up for the recruits to see. “Now for our sauce. Have you guys ever flambéed anything before?”
“Lo, is that French?”
Logan’s microphone just barely picked up his little chuckle. “Yes.”
“Its literal translation means ‘flamed.’” Leo supplied, watching fear develop on their faces and trying his hardest not to laugh, biting his lower lip in the process.
This was only going to end badly, in a glorious blaze of fire.
“We’ve never had a disaster happen on the show flambéing something. Let’s try to keep it that way.” He grabbed the bottle of cognac at his station. “I’m going to take all of this cognac, add it to our pan with the sauce, and light it.”
He grabbed a lighter, flicked it on, and lightly touched it to the surface of the alcohol. Pink-red flames sprung from the pan, causing several of the recruits to shout and step back in alarm. “We’re just going to let it sit and burn off that alcohol.”
Dorcas grabbed her pan and added shallots to it. “I’m going to start getting my shallots sautéed, and –“
“Shallots?” A recruit asked, confusion etched on her face.
“Yes.”
“What are those?”
Dorcas turned and grabbed a shallot from the counter behind her. “This is a shallot.”
“Oh, so an onion.”
“No.” Dorcas said plainly, grabbing a hand mixer to blend her potatoes, butter, and cream. “Once the shallots are cooked, I add them to the potatoes and mix it all together. Then all you have to do is plate all this and you’re done.”
Leo grabbed his saucepan and spooned some out. “Don’t forget to add your sauce on top of the ribeye.”
“Now it’s your job to recreate this dish on your own. You have an hour to complete this challenge. And your time starts… now!”
Chaos ensued. Knives were waved around haphazardly, chopping skills were slim to none. One recruit was still trying to turn the stove on, while another had grabbed a pan that definitely wasn’t going to be big enough for a ribeye steak.
Leo shot Dorcas a horrified look. “Did we go too fast? I thought we explained everything pretty well, but now I’m not sure.”
“That’s just the way of this show.” Dorcas said with a shrug. “We need to see what level they’re on and what their strengths and weaknesses are before we can really start teaching. It gets better when we’re allowed to get out there and help them.”
Finn and Logan had cut off their own ribeyes first and were headed back to their stations. “Oh god I don’t remember anything they showed us.” Finn stressed, putting his ribeye directly onto the pan without any oil.
Logan looked down at his thyme and butter, seemingly at a loss. “Just look at your notes.”
“I can’t read it. You know I have terrible handwriting. Look,” he flipped his notepad around to show Logan. “That’s all I wrote down.”
“Does that say goat?” Logan asked, not bothering to strip the leaves of thyme off the stems and just throwing the entire sprig of herb into his pan.
Finn turned it back around squinted. “Maybe?”
“I like your smiley faces, though.” Logan said, pressing a quick kiss to Finn’s cheek. The redhead smiled broadly.
“Thanks, baby.”
Dorcas hummed by Leo’s side. “I forgot they’re together.”
“Yeah,” Leo absentmindedly fiddled with the bracelet around his wrist. “Must be hard. Hockey’s not known for being accepting.” He tried not to think too much about his memories of locker rooms, judgmental eyes, and the slurs of his own teammates from years ago.
A shout from one of the recruits snapped him back to attention. The recruit was halfway across the room from her on-fire sauce and refusing to go back to her station. Leo sighed. “Flambéing was a horrible first lesson.”
“Maybe. But it sure is entertaining.” Dorcas raised her voice to be heard by the contestants. “Don’t leave pans on a stove unattended, please!”
“Let it rain!” Finn shouted, throwing salt into his pot of cooking potatoes. Dorcas cackled joyously as she watched.
“How much salt are you going to put in there?” Leo called, eyes wide.
Finn repeated, “Let it rain!” as if it were an actual answer.
“I think he just put a cup of salt in those potatoes.”
Dorcas was wheezing now, hunched over as she laughed.
“Laugh now, but we’re the ones who have to taste that.”
She instantly stopped laughing. “Oh shit.”
“We’re definitely going to need those drinks tonight.”
***
Logan’s dish was up first. Leo looked down at his steak and fished out a thyme stem, holding it up for him to see. “When you’re working with thyme, you really need to just use the leaves. When the stems are cooked they get really tough and can be like swallowing fish bones when they’re like this.” He cut into the ribeye and took a bite. “But your steak tastes really good. It’s perfectly cooked and not too dry.”
Logan flashed them a blinding smile (that might have left Leo a little speechless, but he wasn’t planning on admitting that anytime soon).
“The potatoes have a good consistency, too.” Dorcas added when Leo didn’t say anything else. “Good job, Logan.”
After several raw steaks, burned steaks, and soupy mashed potatoes were tasted, the dish both of the chefs were dreading the most appeared in front of them.
Finn’s potatoes.
Dorcas looked to Leo, then met Finn’s eyes. “Now, I haven’t come across many things I’m genuinely afraid to eat. But these potatoes…”
Finn laughed good-naturedly. “Yikes.”
Leo’s eyes bulged as he tried the potatoes. “I think I’m dehydrated now.”
“I think I have a water bottle somewhere, if you want it.”
“I’m tempted to take you up on that.” Dorcas said, voice strained. “In the future, go light on the salt.”
In the end, they had to eliminate the contestant who gave them burned steak and didn’t serve mashed potatoes at all. The directors called cut shortly after that and people visibly relaxed, chatting with friends while the cleaning crew came through and started dealing with the mess. Leo felt like he should probably help with that; there sure was a lot to clean. The crew would be here until midnight at this rate. So he grabbed a disinfectant spray and a rag, turning to start wiping things down and almost running right into Logan as he did so.
“Hey, chef!” Finn said from his spot next to the brunet. “Have your taste buds recovered yet?”
He laughed with a shrug. “I have a feeling they’ll be messed up from now until a month after this show ends. That might be for the best, anyways.”
“Why in the hell did you sign up for this?” Logan asked, head tilted in confusion. “You’re forced to eat awful food and watch a bunch of amateurs destroy this kitchen. Seems more stressful than anything.”
“I mean, watching you wave around that knife today just about gave me a heart attack-“ Finn interrupted him with a loud burst of laughter, causing Leo to smile as he continued, “But it’s fun teaching y’all. It’s a good change of pace. Doing just competitions gets old after a while.”
“Yeah, especially if you win all of them.”
Leo felt his cheeks heat up. “Not all of them.”
“Most of them, then.” Logan amended. “Don’t sell yourself short; you’re really good.”
“So are you guys.” Leo stammered a little, trying to think of the right words. “I – I just wanted to say it’s really cool that you’re both raising so much awareness for the need for diversity in hockey. It’s going to make a world of difference to a lot of people.”
I wish I’d had someone like the two of you to look up to when I was growing up.
He played with his bracelet again. It wasn’t a secret that he was gay – he’d talked about it a few times on various shows and competitions he’d participated in. That was one of the best things about the cooking industry. It didn’t matter who you were or what your secrets were; as long as you were a good cook, most people didn’t really care. Leo had realized at a young age that, no matter what he ended up doing with his life, he wasn’t going to hide any part of himself. He’d done that dance before, and he didn’t care to relive it any time soon.
Finn smiled, throwing an arm around Logan’s shoulders. “Well, thanks. It hasn’t always been the easiest, but we’re happy.”
Leo resolutely ignored the strange pang in his chest at those words. It wasn’t fair of him to be jealous. “I’m glad.” He glanced around and noticed the progress the crew had made. “I should probably go. We’ve still got a lot to do before we head out.”
“Do you guys need any help?”
Leo couldn’t help but laugh a little at that. “Seeing that you made most of this mess, maybe we should have you clean up,” he teased Finn, who pouted. “But no, we’re fine. Thanks for the offer, though. Y’all have a good night.”
“You too!” Logan called over his shoulder. He leaned over to whisper something to Finn, who threw his head back and laughed.
Leo turned away and started wiping down the nearest counter.

Post-Episode Interview
Leo: *gives the camera a pained look* Is cooking really this hard for people? I want to get out there and help them so badly, but I can’t. We’re supposed to just observe for this challenge.
The video switches from Leo talking to footage from the earlier challenge: Leo grimacing and taking an aborted step towards a recruit getting his face way too close to the fire. Leo looking on in horror as another recruit wields a knife incorrectly and nearly loses a finger. Dorcas laughing as a recruit tries to grab her potatoes out of a pot of hot water with her bare hands while Leo reaches out and grabs onto the edge of the table with a white-knuckled grip. “Oh god, this isn’t safe at all.” Dorcas ruffles his hair, standing on her tiptoes to do so. “Poor rookie. You get used to it.”
*Back to Leo in the interview room, pinching the bridge of his nose*
Leo: My hair will be completely gray by the end of this show.

A Busy Holiday
This was supposed to follow a prompt, but per usual, I deviated lol. Characters: Chris McKay x Black Female Reader / Also: parents, grandparents, siblings, and best friends. (Note: I gave you the last name “Davis”) Content: Fluff; a little angst?; worry; overthinking; couple issues.  Word Count: 1,659
Tumblr media
McKay had been acting strange all week. He’d been avoiding you—responding to texts with single phrases or short sentences; not answering phone calls at all. The two of you were supposed to hang out during the holidays, and you’d spend Christmas Eve with your family, and Christmas Day with his. You wanted to go over your plans, but he just did not seem invested. Sure, he worked at a real estate agency, but surely people weren’t buying houses during the holidays? Or, maybe you were just an idiot who knew nothing about real estate...
Sigh...your parents always warned you about your tendency to jump to conclusions about everything, so you kept your cool. But now, it was two days before Christmas Eve, and you needed to know what was up. So, you called him, and finally, he answered.
“Hey, baby…” he said with a tired voice. “McKay? What the fuck is up?!” “I’m sorry, baby. I’ve been super busy.” “Me too, McKay, but I still make time to call. We’re supposed to be spending Christmas break together. Is that still happening, or no?” “Yes, it’s still happening. We agreed to do what we did last year, right? Christmas Eve with your people, then Christmas Day with mine, then just you and me at the Ramada, right?” “Yeah, but—” “I booked the Ramada in October, remember?” he pressed. You got agitated. “Yes, but McKay, just because we’re an hour away from each other it doesn’t mean we can’t still communicate. These short conversations have me thinking that you’re up to something.” “Up to something like…working? Spending time with my family and friends? Registering for next semester? Not everybody gets to just chill on their breaks...” He had a point with that last statement, but you chose to bypass it. “Am I not family or friends, McKay?” You heard him sigh. “Look, baby. I’ve got to go. I’ll see you Christmas Eve. Early in the morning. Okay?” You rolled your eyes. “Sure. Okay.”
Christmas Eve
McKay texted you the night before, saying that he would be over at ten. Of course, you sent him a dry “K.” in response. But who were you fooling? You got up the next morning, spent an eternity in the shower, slathering soap and body scrub all over your skin and shaving non-existent hair from your legs—just in case. You rubbed coconut oil into your skin, sprayed your Versace crystal on your neck, applied a little face makeup, and slid on some popping red lipstick. Maybe you were tripping…but you were going to make sure McKay got a GOOD look at what he’d been missing out on the last three weeks.
The doorbell rang at exactly 10:00AM and your dad answered it. “What’s up, Chris?” your dad’s voice boomed throughout the house. “How you doin’, Mr. Davis?” McKay said. You heard the slapping of skin in a dap. Then, the front door closed. You gave yourself another look in the mirror—lifting your boobs in your red T-shirt, rubbing your hands along your thighs, and fluffing out your white cardigan. “I’m doin’, I’m doin’,” your father responded. “She’s in her room.” You yanked your phone off your dresser and jumped onto the bed. Then, you leaned over on your side and thumbed through the phone, pretending to be unmoved by McKay’s impending presence. He walked in with fresh braids, wearing his usual blue hoodie, some jeans, and his blue and white Jordan 11s. In his hands were a bouquet of red roses. “May I come in?” he asked jokingly. You looked up from your phone with an unimpressed look. “Sure.” He shook his head, chuckled to himself, and put the roses on your dresser. Then, he leaned over the bed and gave you a kiss on the lips. You almost fainted at the smell of cologne. “You tryna act like you ain’t happy to see me?” he asked, sitting beside you. You put down your phone and lifted your body to rest against your pillows. “I usually don’t get excited about seeing strangers,” you responded. He rolled his eyes and lean back. “Maaan, come on. Cut that shit out!” he laughed. You buried your face into your knees and laughed, but he wiggled his finger under your chin and tilted your head up. Then, he kissed your lips again.    “I’m sorry, baby. But I promise you, things have just really been busy,” he said. He lowered his head and rubbed your sheets. “And…I guess I have to be honest with you.” “Please do.” “I’ve had some shit going on mentally,” he admitted. Your heart sank. You really could be an asshole. You took his hand and kissed it. “I’m sorry, baby…” “No, don’t be sorry. Nothing bad, for the most part. I’ve just really been in my head about some things...” “But you know you can talk to me about it, right?” you asked. He stared into your eyes and smiled. “Yeah, I know.” He leaned forward to kiss you again, but just as his lips were inches away from yours… “Hey, McKay!” your mother’s voice screeched. You both looked up to see her in the doorway with an ugly Christmas sweater and reindeer ears on. You scoffed and buried your face in your knees again. “Mama, what are you wearing?” “Hey, Mrs. Davis!” “Hey, McKay baby. And what do you mean what am I wearing? It’s Christmas Eve!”
You and McKay started the day with some window shopping. You’d both completed your shopping, but it wouldn’t hurt to see what was left on the shelves. Next, you went on a double date with your best friend, Mariah, and her boyfriend, Johari—first some lunch at Panera Bread, then the movies. After that, you hung out at Johari’s apartment, playing board games. McKay insisted on playing Monopoly, the longest damned game in the world; then the two of you had to dash home for dinner with your family. You came home to smooth Christmas jazz playing from the radio, dim lights and candles—very different from the usual festive setup, where The Temptations would be blasting and every single light in the house would be on—with the blinds and curtains opened, too--much to your chagrin.  Both sets of your grandparents were in the living room, and you gave all four of them big hugs, as did McKay. “Babe, I’m going to go change out of this hoodie really quick,” McKay said. “Alright.” McKay returned to the living room in a crisp white Polo, but you noticed he’d changed into Khakis and dress shoes, too—the Polo shirt tucked in like he was going on a job interview. You raised an eyebrow, but figured he just wanted to be respectful. You hung out in the living room with your grandparents, and when the table was set, everyone made their way to the kitchen. Plates were already made with Dad’s famous ribeye steaks, mom’s crab cakes, and green beans. A tray of potatoes—sat in the center of the table with a bowl of sour cream beside it, a stick of butter, and the salt and pepper shakers. “McKay, would you like to say grace?” your dad suggested. Your eyebrows furrowed, because since when? “Um, sure Mr. Davis,” McKay agreed. Everyone bowed their heads. “Dear God, thank you for this day, and thank you for this dinner prepared by family…” Suddenly, the back door opened. You opened one eye to see McKay’s parents and brothers crept into the kitchen. You swung your head up and looked around at everyone and their still-bowed heads. “God, I especially thank you for allowing the Davis family to welcome me with opened arms. And today…” McKay removed his hand from yours, and suddenly, everyone’s head lifted. McKay stepped back and started digging in his pockets. Your hands flew to your mouth. “…I hope you’ll allow me to talk out of their home, with their daughter as my fiancée,” he said, pulling out a tiny box and falling to one knee. You stood frozen with your hands to your mouth and eyes wide. Then, tears started to stream down your face. “I can’t stand you McKay,” you blubbered. “I know,” he laughed. “Y/N Davis, will you marry me?” he opened the box and revealed gold band with a sparkling sapphire jewel in the middle—the exact kind of ring you told him you’d like when you were just two project partners for your Cultural Studies course—discussing marriages and weddings around the world. You shook your head in disbelief and wept. “Of course, I will, McKay. You know I will!” McKay took the ring out of the box and slid it on your finger, and your family—current and future—clapped and cheered. McKay rose to his feet, pulled you in his arms and kissed you on the lips. You rested your chin over his shoulders and spotted Mariah and Johari in the doorway. You let out a scream and a hearty laugh. “I hate y’all!” you shouted. They laughed and walked over to you and surrounded you both in hugs. “Is that why you had me in there playing some damned Monopoly?!” Everyone burst into laughter, and hugs and kisses went around.
Tumblr media
During dinner, McKay informed you that he didn’t book the Ramada—but a weekend at a beach house through Noirbnb. You packed some lounging clothes, beach wear, and other necessities, hopped in the car with McKay, and the two of you made your way there. Of course, he teased you about your bratty attitude—and promised some punishment for it later—but the both of you promised to be better at communicating and understanding each other. You arrived at the beach house, owned by a lovely middle-aged couple, and made yourself comfortable. You were too full and tired to do what you both really wanted to do, so instead, the two of you wrapped yourselves in a blanket and sat on the beach, talking beneath the crescent moon, and before an endless ocean.

Mini’s day out . (Mini series)
Tumblr media
“You’re making it seem like I can’t take care of a baby !”
Brianna and Erik argued back and forth about Mini. It was the first time the two of you had alone time since she was born. Brianna agreed to watch her for the night while the two of you went on a much needed date . It had been seven months , seven long crybaby , poopie diaper changing months .
It was something about the way Brianna held her , it set Erik off . He felt like she didn’t put enough “care” into it as he explained . Overprotective couldn’t put a dent in his behavior.
“You gotta play music , or else she won’t go to sleep . If she cries too much , call me and I’ll come get her” Erik went on and on with his daddy rules . Brianna was only taking her for the night, hours to be exact, and the two of you would pick her up early in the morning . She was fighting herself from mentioning the whole Jamaica fiasco . Even though you took him back , Brianna still had him in the dog house .
“You know CPR?” He questioned, Brianna laughed but she stopped once she realized he was serious .
“Girl , come down here and get your man!” She yelled loudly . You heard her , but you were busy squeezing your feet into your black daffodile heels.
“Erik!” You yelled , in that parental tone you were mastering . “Brianna sees her almost every day, she knows what to do “ your voice and steps became more prevalent as you walked down to the living room .
Erik took a moment to look at you , for a little longer than normal . He hadn’t seen you this way in a long time . Hair down, make up on and a tight dress . It was the heels that got to him, turned on by the muscle flex in your calves . Erik took note to make you wear the heels in the bedroom later tonight .
Once you noticed the way he was looking at you , a look of fluster took over your face . “What?” You said shyly, as if you were a teen and he first laid eyes on you .
Erik smirked and grabbed Mini’s diaper bag to give to Brianna .
“Oh, so now you trust me” Brianna snatched the bag and held it obver her shoulder . She saw exactly how Erik was looking at you .
“Nah, You good” Erik spoke to Brianna lowly, while still looking at you . Usually a look like that ended up with you laid out on your back, with his head between your legs .
“Help Brianna put the car seat in her car” you directed. You gave Mini a couple of kisses on her face before she left. Erik did what you said and walked with her to her car . You went in search for a jacket and purse . As soon as you found the right combination, Erik came back in .
“We’re gonna go get this food, and then...” he dragged on
“And then what?” You asked, gawking at him . He looked so handsome in his denim coat and Cartier’s . You could smell the Tom Ford cologne that you loved .
“And then I’m fucking the shit out of you when we get back”
You walked over to him, wrapping your arms around his waist . Your body pulled closely to his as you looked up at him .
“All around the house ? “ You asked , the both of you wanted to take full advantage of being baby free tonight . That included the blunt filled with the sour skittles strain that Erik pulled from his pocket .
“Where you want it?” His eager hand cupped and massaged the center of your ass. “You want some dick on the couch? “
“Not on my couch” You hissed , it was still fairly new.
“You want this dick on the counter, is that good for you?” He squeezed your ass tighter, getting a feel of your pantied lips inbetween his fingers .
“Yeah, I want it there “ You inched on your toes to give his lips a kiss . Erik then placed the blunt to his lips , took the lighter from his pocket and sparked it .
“How about the roof, can we fuck on there too?” He inhaled , voice groggy and deep from the smoke .
“As long as you don’t drop me , daddy”
Erik groaned and slapped your ass hard, you squealed and kissed him again. He loved when you called him that . If he had it his way, he’d eat you for dinner. But he was actually hungry and so where you . After the both out you were good and high , you and Erik lead off to dinner . Plus, the munchies were kicking in.
Erik drove to the restaurant . It was one he had reserved a month ago. It was that exclusive . It was an upscale steak restaurant , something that both of you loved . The hostess found the reservation and led the both of you to a semi-secluded table .
The waitress came in an instant with water and suggestions. Erik ordered two appetizers for the table and red wine was served early. The waitress left to put the orders in, but not after assuring she would be back for a moment to take the main courses.
Your stomach began to growl, so much so that Erik heard it . It sounded like gas, which caused him to laugh loudly. He reached over to rub your belly.
“I’m so hungry babe” you complained , you grabbed the napkin wrapped butter knife, and spread a generous amount of butter across the complementary bread .
“I’m gonna feed you , just hold on” he continued to laugh at you.
You closed your eyes as you chewed the bread, it was soft and warm. Those munchies . It seemed as if the waitress took ages to come back with more wine and the appetizers. The both of you began to indulge it all of its goodness .
“I’ll come back and take your orders-“ the waitress began to trail off but the loud “No!” from you and Erik stopped her . His mouth full of Calamari dipped in a cream sauce , he began to speak .
“We ready now, let’s do this” he clapped his hands and spoke as if it was a sporting event, the both of you laughed .
“What would you like sir?” The waitress asked .
“I want this ribeye, cooked medium well. A side of mashed potatoes and throw in an order of the lobster Mac and cheese” Erik let out in one breath .
“Baby, you need some vegetables too “ the mom in you complained at the amount of starch he ordered . You almost spit out your wine when you heard him order a side of deep fried okra.
“You said get a vegetable, you ain’t say shit about how it was prepared “
“You right “
The two of you continued to laugh . The waitress was getting irritable , both of you noticed ... but it was only motivation for the two of you to activate the obnoxious behavior even more .
“I would like to order the Cajun pasta , with another side of fried okra and can you bring more bread please?” You closed your menu and handed it to the waitress .
“You sure you want two sides of the Okra, the portions are enough for both of you “ she warned . Erik blinked quickly , held his chest and pretended to be appalled.
“Baby, I think she calling me fat” You whispered, loud enough for the waitress to purposely hear .
“No, that’s not what I’m saying . I just- are you sure you want two ?” She spoke frantically, truly worried that she offended you.
“I’m sure , bring us two”
“And make sure you bring more bread, cause I’m really hungry Madame ” Erik spoke with a French accent and gave her his menu too.
The two of you obviously feeling the effects of the potent red wine and weed, the laughter wouldn’t stop . Even more as the annoyed waitress scattered away from the table .
“I hope she doesn’t spit in our food” You took another generous gulp of the red wine .
“I miss doing shit like this , we used to be on some crazy shit before we had the baby” Erik reminisced.
“Remember after the club, when you skipped out on the bill at Denny’s and you almost left me there !”
“I told you to follow me”
“I was so scared , I didn’t think you would actually do it “ You sat in silence, still eating from one of the many plates in front of you . Erik couldn’t help but laugh .
“I didn’t actually skip the bill , I snuck and paid it. I did it to scare you , to see if you was really down for me “
“Seriously!” Your voice raised an octave higher as you kicked him under the table . “You wanted to see if I was down to what , follow you in the life of crime?”
Erik continued to laugh as he rubbed his shin, it was sore from where your heel landed .
“I just - just wanted to see if you’d do it for me, that’s all “ he softened in his chair , speaking sincerely now . That date was in the early stages of the relationship, back when Erik first began to have real feelings towards you .
“Well , did I make the cut?” You smirked invetween another bite . Knowing exactly how much of Erik you had wrapped around your finger .
“Yeah, but only because...” he began to speak , but stopped as if his sentence was complete.
“Because of what ?” You reacted , eager to hear his next words . He smiled at you again, a real hard smile that made the apples of his cheeks poke out . “Baby?”
“Wassup?” He answered blatantly, then followed it with complete silence again.
But it was all good . Really good. In fact , almost perfect .
The both of you kept eating , laughing at each other just because you were happy. And intoxicated . Sure , other guests were bothered by the loudness but it didn’t matter to either one of you . It didn’t matter . You could be shameless with Erik, and he with you . Guards were always down and words were always pure .
“I love you “ you said , not even bothering to look at him. It rolled off your tongue so casually with the wine .
“I love you too”
The waitress brought over the rest of dinner , and refilled the wine glasses . Within moments Everything was shared and eaten . Erik didn’t even get upset when you ate half of his steak .
“Would the two of you like dessert, you can take it to-go also?” The waitress later asked , with a subtle hint of shade in her voice .
“Y’all got cheesecake?- I mean, y’all got cheesecake , Madame? ” Erik asked her, all the while leaning back in his chair and spreading his legs . The itis was creeping up to take over both of you .
“Hell no, you know you get gas and I don’t feel like dealing with it tonight “ you protested , Erik and dairy were a match made in hell .
“We have chocolate cake , pecan pie, br-“
“Bring us the cake to go and the check “ you told her .
She brought everything, the two of you made your way to Erik’s car after He paid . Erik gave you the keys, claiming that he didn’t feel like driving . He sat in the passenger seat and took a long breath , trying to regain focus . The truth was, the red wine had taken him down. He was just too prideful to admit it . A man, like him , was drunk off wine ? He was embarrassed.
You knew him well . And you were an advid wine drinker , you could handle it . The drive home was smooth , just the sweet act holding of hands and the low bass filled music playing through the speakers . You and Erik both thought it would be weird coming home to no baby . Erik admitted outloud that he was happy about the empty house , even if it was only for a night .
In the bedroom He wasted no time undressing . With nothing on but his smirk , he rested on the bed watching you . Fully clothed , you told him you needed to go to the bathroom .
“Hurry up “
You rolled your eyes and went into the bathroom . You undressed in front of your mirror. The pink lingerie set fit your body a little snug , the baby weight had not left yet . Neither did the small stretch marks Mini gifted you .
“Leave them heels on!” Erik yelled through the door . You laughed and slipped your feet back inside of them. Thank god you’d be on your knees and back most of the night , your feet would kill you otherwise .
“Come on baby, I need that big ass” his tone was low , almost as if he was begging.
You turned your body for a side view, watching your belly poke out . You sucked stomach in , remembering the pre-baby look.
Erik didn’t care , he made it evident that he loved you and your body . It was your own personal insecurities taunting you . You gave yourself a mental pep talk and left the bathroom . Erik’s back was facing the door as you crept towards him.
You heard the unthinkable.
Erik was snoring .
You took off the heels and got in bed with him. Your arms cradled around his waist and your face nuzzled into his back . You thanked god in that moment . Not for giving you Erik , but because you were just as tired as him . The itis had fully taken control .

Keto Cooking: Keto Food List a ketogenic diet is founded on a few basic principles lots of fat moderate amounts of protein plenty of veggies in a very very small amount of carbohydrates it's a much different food pyramid than most of us are used to and if the idea of reimagining your entire diet feels overwhelming you're not alone nearly everyone who has embarked on the keto journey felt the same way in the beginning here's the most important thing to remember you don't have to make up your new diet from scratch there are keto resources guides meal planning tools and tons of recipes online to help you cook and eat in this new way right here it rolled me we offer a comprehensive keto food list as well as recipes for every meal plus snacks our keto food list is one of the best places to start as you calculate your macros put together your shopping list and plan for what you'll be eating each day to help your body switch over into a ketogenic state and become a fat-burning machine let's take a look at some of the foods you'll be eating on a keto diet first we'll categorize them into food groups fats and oils are a big part of the keto diet not all fats are the same and some should be avoided saturated fats like butter ghee which is clarified butter coconut oil MCT oils and tallow or lard can be freely use them for frying or sauteing foods or mixing into dishes like the now famous keto proof coffee monounsaturated fats like cold-pressed olive flax avocado and macadamia nut oil should also be eaten as often as you like add them to sauces and dressings or drizzle atop other foods naturally occurring polyunsaturated fats like the ones you'll find an animal and fatty fish are very nutritious them up however beware that processed polyunsaturated and trans fats like the ones you see and so-called heart-healthy margarine spreads should always be avoided one other thing to consider is keeping your omegas and balanced by eating plenty of wild salmon tuna trout and shellfish for Omega threes or taking a small fish oil supplement keep an eye on your intake of nut or seed based foods as these can be high in inflammatory omega-6s proteins are also an important cornerstone of the diet whenever possible choose organic pasture-raised and grass-fed meat be careful not to eat too much protein this can result in lower levels of ketones and increased production of glucose so try to pair proteins with fattier side dishes and sauces wild caught fish like catfish cod flounder halibut mackerel mahi mahi salmon snapper trout and tuna are all good choices remember fatty or fish is better other types of seafood like clams oysters lobster crab scallops mussels and squid provide protein though some may contain carbs as well so watch out whole eggs are one of the most affordable and versatile protein sources look for free-range eggs from a local grocery store or farmers market one egg contains 6 grams of protein and 5 grams of fat try them hard boiled scrambled fried poached and devil when it comes to beef choose fattier cuts and blends for steak ask your butcher what has high fat content ribeye is usually a good one for ground beef read the package and buy fattier ratios like 85/15 or 80/20 the same goes for pork always look for fattier cuts of ground pork pork loin pork chops tenderloin and ham bacon is a keto favorite but read the packaging to make sure there aren't added sweeteners like brown sugar cured pork products like sausages often contain added sugars and other processed ingredients be sure to avoid them choose dark meat over white meat when buying poultry like chicken duck quail another wild game similarly always look for fatty versus lean cuts of other means such as veal goat lamb and turkey offal and organs like heart liver kidney and tongue provide protein as well as vitamins and nutrients nut butters are a non meat source of protein but be sure to choose natural unsweetened versions and go for ones with more fat like almond butter and macadamia nut butter nut and seed flours are commonly used in Quito baking just remember that these should be consumed in moderation produce whether fresh or frozen is really important to the keto diet and for general health but some fruits and veggies are very high in natural sugars and thus should be avoided a good rule of thumb is to stick with above-ground vegetables some veggies to load up on our broccoli cauliflower cabbage green beans Swiss chard romaine lettuce and spinach limit your intake of hire car veggies like baby bella mushrooms squash parsnips beets and garlic and night shades like tomatoes bell peppers and eggplant citrus fruits and berries should be eaten with careful moderation and sweet starchy produce like sweet potatoes and bananas should never be consumed for more info on eating veggies on a keto diet read the blog post titled the best low carb vegetables free keto unrolled me when shopping for dairy always be sure to buy full fat dairy items and choose organic and raw when possible highly processed dairy normally has 2 to 5 times the number of carbs as the raw and organic versions and this definitely adds up over time full fat heavy whipping cream Greek yogurt cream cheese half-and-half and marscapone are commonly consumed dairy products in the keto diet moderate amounts of soft cheeses like mozzarella Monterey Jack and Brie are fine but hard cheeses such as a cheddar parmesan feta and Swiss tend to be better bet since they're lowering carbs take care to monitor your dairy levels when eating a protein heavy meal to keep your macros in balance if you've hit a plateau or slowed down in weight loss consider cutting back on some dairy nearly all foods needs seasoning to taste good don't worry about tracking most spices sea salt pepper as you cook spices do contain carbs so if you're using a remarkable amount of them in a recipe make sure you note those however you track your macros pass on prepackaged spice blends as many of them contain sugars and other fillers the place to be vigilant is with sauces dressings and condiments many store-bought versions are loaded with sweeteners making these items yourself is preferable though it can be time-consuming some easier sauces to make from scratch include brown butter and simple vinaigrettes if you do go for premade condiments read the labels carefully look for ketchup mustard relish and hot sauces with no sugar added probiotic rich sauerkraut horseradish Wurst assure sauce and fatty salad dressings like ranch and Caesar finally drink water we recommend a gallon of water each day the ketogenic diet has a natural diuretic effect and many people starting out notice periods of dehydration if you're prone to UTIs or bladder pain it's extra important to intentionally drink more water throughout the day you can occasionally add sucrose or stevia sweet and flavor packets or some fresh-squeezed lemon lime or A Long Weekend in Fort Bragg, CA
Hi there everyone!Elisa and I decided to spend a long weekend on the Northern California Coast near Fort Bragg.  Fort Bragg sits on the coast just north of the quaint seaside town of Mendocino.  The County of Mendocino was immortalized by Willie Nelson and Lee Ann Womack who sang the great song "Mendocino County Line", a personal favorite of mine.
Mendocino is now very famous for producing some amazing wines.  I am partial to the Pinot Noir wines from the area.  But on this trip, our focus was going to be abalone.  We would be joining our niece Amberly and her fiancé Christian who along with several of their friends annually celebrate the re-opening of abalone season by diving for the tasty muscles in the kelp beds right off of the Mendocino Coast.  They would be roughing it by tend camping at Van Damme State Park.  We on the other hand would be "roughing it" in our Legacy Motorhome just up the road in Fort Bragg.
Fort Bragg was originally occupied by Native Americans but in the mid-1800's the Indians would be resettled onto a reservation near the mouth of the Noyo River.  A military garrison would be opened nearby by Horatio Gibson, who would name the fort after one of his commanders, Braxton Bragg.  By the 1890s the Indians would abandon the reservation and the military would leave shortly thereafter, but the town would remain and a growing lumber industry would propel the Fort Bragg to prosperity.  Fort Bragg would experience a boom in 1906, when the lumber industry would be called upon to help rebuild San Francisco after the great earthquake of 1906.  Today, the lumber industry has moved to other places and Fort Bragg's focus is now on tourism.  The beauty of rugged coastline is certainly a great draw, but just off the coast are the beautiful redwoods.  This is what makes Van Damme State park such a great spot, it has access to the coast but sits among the trees in a large sprawling state park.  There are also countless quaint B&B's and cozy Inns that line scenic Hwy 1 from Point Arena to Fort Bragg.
Getting to Fort Bragg was the most challenging part of our trip.  For starters, we were late preparing for our trip, because we had to take Elisa's brother to a number of different doctor's appointments.  Then, our little Hyundai that we tow behind our motorhome would have a problem and end up in the shop.  So we would have to make arrangement s to rent a car from Enterprise up in Fort Bragg.  We left Martinez, CA at around 10:30 AM and the trip would usually only take about 4 hours.  Unfortunately, we would be tied up in traffic on Hwy 37 near Napa Valley.  We were leaving on a Thursday, so there shouldn't be traffic in Napa Valley, but apparently Route 116 was closed and we would be re-routed to 101 just past San Rafael and we would then be caught in the Pentaluma traffic.  Bottom line is that the journey would take over 5-1/2 hours.  We had an appointment to pick up our rental car at 4:00pm and we weren't going to make it.  We called ahead and the gal working the desk suggested we not take Hwy 128 and instead stay on 101 to Willits and then take Hwy 20.  it worked out, and we would arrive by 4:25 just before she was closing for the day.
We had a difficult time reserving as spot for our 38' motorhome on this first weekend of August.  That's because it is the first weekend after the opening of Abalone season and apparently everyone who as camping - except us - was diving for the little buggers.  We did end up finding a spot at Woodside RV park.  it's not the most scenic and well equipped park we've been in but we did get a nice pull through spot.  By the time we got settled into our spot, we needed to begin thinking about dinner. Elisa had picked up some great looking ribeye steaks before we left so that problem was solved and we had a great dinner. The next day, we would spend some time exploring Fort Bragg and taking a long walk with our dogs Oreo and Bella on Glass Beach.  Glass Beach is a popular tourist spot just north of Fort Bragg, and as the name suggest, the beach is abundantly covered with beach glass.  The interesting story is how the beach came to be covered in glass.  From the 1860 through the 1950's the town of Fort Bragg would dispose of their garbage by first burning it on the beach and then dumping it directly into the ocean.  Over time, the ocean would decompose the discarded items and expel the diestrus all along the shoreline.  The glass from bottles and jars that were thrown into the ocean would become broken sanded smooth by the tides and then deposited along the beach.  Nowadays, much of the glass has been picked by tourists and locals and while there is still a lot of glass it is nowhere near as plentiful as it once was.  There are signs everywhere, asking people not to take the glass but most of the folks we saw out there were filling their pockets and pails with the glass gems.  At this rate, they're gonna have to come up with a new name for this beach.
Later that Friday evening we wold drive down to Van Damme State park and connect with Amber and Christian and we would get some quality time in with our newest Grand-Niece Kirsten.  She is only about 4 months old but this is her second camping trip.  What a trooper.  Earlier in the day, Christian had been out with the rest of the gang diving for abalone.  He would report that there were lots of them out there but they were relatively small.  We would arrive just in time to see his friend John running the abalone through a meat grinder so that they could make abalone won-tons and abalone pizza.  Others in the group were slicing, pounding, breading and frying abalone.  We would find abalone in salads and tacos. We brought along some Italian sweet sausage and some Bockwurst sausages to round out the faire.  Everything was delicious.    We would call it a night around 10:00 and make our way back up to Fort Bragg, which is just 15 minutes up Hwy 1.
On Saturday, we would sleep in until about 9:00 in the morning, this was partly due to the fact that our little dog Bella decided to wake us up at about 4:00 am so she could go out to the bathroom.  Once that was done, she decided that everyone else should wake up and join her.  It took awhile to get there back to sleep so, we would make up for it by sleeping in.  After we had a hearty breakfast of eggs, hash browns, breakfast sausage and toast, we would head back to Glass Beach for another walk.  It would be low tide, so Elisa wanted to head down to the tide pools to look or critters.  After spending a couple hours looking at the seals and sea lions just off the shoreline and exploring the tide pools we would head down toward our campground to explore the Mendocino Coast Botanical Garden.  They would be having a art festival and beer and wine tasting at the gardens.  It was very crowded.  The gardens are very deceiving from the entrance, it looks like it will be relatively small so my expectations were low.  But once we got beyond the entrance, we were amazed by how large the gardens were.  It was beautiful.  They are known for their collection of rhododendrons and dahlias.  The rhododendrons were not in bloom but the dahlia's were beautiful.  The grounds wind their way from Hwy 1 all the way down to the beach, about 3/4 of a mile.  On this day, open spaces in the park would be occupied by artists exhibiting their work.  In between the artists were different vintners and brewers of craft beer.  It made for an entertaining afternoon.
Later that evening we would make another pass through Van Damme State Park to see Amber, Christian and baby Kirsten.  They were all so cute dressed in their Where's Waldo costumes, which was this years theme for the abalone fest.  Even Lizzie the black lab would be sporting a Waldo classic white and red striped shirt.  We wouldn't be staying for the abalone on this night as we wanted to try Luna Trattoria in Fort Bragg, a highly rated Italian restaurant.  We would get there by 8:00pm and they were packed.  Apparently, the great reviews aren't just hype.  Chef Massimo and his wife are from Northern Italy and they lovingly prepare authentic dishes that include fresh made pastas and local seafood.   We ordered a starter to share, Polenta with a meat sauce.  it was perfectly prepared, the polenta was sautéed so that it was a little crispy on the outside but soft and creamy on the inside.  The meat sauce was also delicious.  For our entree's Elisa would order their gluten free fusilli with a creamy red sauce with salmon.  It was excellent.  I would go for the mixed grill with oven roasted potatoes.  The grill platter would have a 4oz skirt steak that was accompanied with a spicy Italian sausage and house made pork sausage.  They were drizzled with a nice tomato and garlic aioli that paired nicely with it.  The potatoes were to die for.  We declare Luna Trattoria as a "must go".  Check it out if you find yourself in Fort Bragg.
On Sunday morning we would pack-up and head back home.  It took us 5 hours again to get home, but the drive back was beautiful.  We would wind our way along the coast on Hwy 1 and then head inland on Hwy 128.  We would go from the rugged coast to redwood forests and then to rolling hills lined with oak trees and then into wine country Alexander Valley straddles  Mendocino and Sonoma counties and it produces some fabulous wines.
It was a short but fun trip.
