You know someone has hit rick bottom when they try to explain how you'll get electrocuted by using a extension cable to a science student who has physics as an arch nemesis and lover. Like yes ofc there can be accidents but they are called accidents for a reason and like, what do you think an insulator does. What did you read in science class, what do you mean you do not know how a simple conductor and insulator work, you incompetent fool.

Tuesday, December 13th
A friend and I spent our morning studying in a coffee shop the opened downtown this year! It was a bit of a walk from campus, but so worth it. I had a piece of spice cake that made my whole day, and a london fog that burned my whole mouth but was so worth it. I did some work for history and precalc, and brainstormed ideas for a club trip next semester. I have three!!! finals tomorrow, one of which I'm not really prepared for, so wish me luck!

currently working on a project about the whitney biennial which was a lovely excuse to spend a day at an art museum. 1000/10 would recommend.

a concerning amount of witchblr will be like "um actually new years was stolen by europeans from the ancient god scroobus mcdoobus" and then you actually try to research scroobus mcdoobus and it turns out he was invented in the 1940s by a conspiracy theorist who powdered every meal with ketamine and thinks that queer people are reincarnated fish

Every now and then I'm reminded Real People with Actual Jobs use tumblr and I've always been legitimately curious what all you weird adults are up to when you're not on this site and with tumblr's New Poll Feature I can finally get an answer! (or the closest approximation of an answer possible with only 10 available options h a)

Hey guys
There's a post going around about something called the "Invertebrate Studies Institute" needing help. A few comments made on the post made me curious, so I checked it out and it seems sketchy to me. (ETA: the post's OP is now aware of the situation and is trying to rectify things on their end, and are ok with my post getting more exposure. Read the notes for more info too!)
The institute is a startup and the owner has displayed misogynistic behavior. He made a company and received "$1.3 million in research grants from the USDA and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation" in 2011, but there aren't any research papers listed on the ISI website more recent than 2012 (sources: ISI website, People Behind the Science podcast transcript, All Things Bugs LLC webpage). It's possible his research is still a work in progress, but I would expect to see some genome sequencing work at the least since that seems to be a major focus.
Also, it's possible to ship frozen specimens in dry ice and have them be fine. Even stuff for molecular work and genome sequencing. So the inability to get help from other research groups, to where they're asking for a local freezer plug-in, is a bit weird to me.
Some screenshots below the cut, didn't screenshot everything since it's mostly just text, but I did cite the sources if you wanna read them yourself.
Not sure what the overall point is of this post is besides "seems sketch to me" but I saw a lot of people worrying on the initial post so I wanted to at least mention this stuff.
Comments from the tumblr post which sparked my initial concerns.

Screenshots from the LinkedIn link, with the initial contact and follow-up legal threat.

Screenshot from the ISI website talking about their facility and "initiative" (I noticed a lot of the wording on the website sounded like they hadn't done significant research, which also gave me pause).

And, for fun, the CDC guide on shipping frozen specimens.

Happy Sunday everyone!
I got back from church a couple of hours ago, which made me feel so thankful for God’s presence in my life.
Now that I’m home and have eaten lunch, I’m going to do some studying for a bit while drinking coffee. I’m working on annotating some poetry for a class I’m taking.
Anyways, I hope you’re all having a great day, and I hope your week is just as good! 🍓

you can replace studying with 0.5-4 hours of thinking about The Character. but watch out

I was telling my dad about ao3 and he asked "But why would anyone do it if they're not being paid?" And that genuinely makes me so sad. The fact that the majority of people are told things are only worth doing if there is financial gain in it. Oh you're an artist? Artists don't make any money.
Sometimes the point isn't money. Sometimes it's just to create.

Henry Ossawa Tanner's depiction of the Annunciation will always be my absolute favourite but I really do think there is something so ethereal and endearing about his study before the official artwork was completed.

The way Mary sits with almost no visible features but you can still tell that her hands are clasped in prayer- the angel Gabriel manifesting as a single stroke of light as the paint and room seems to contort around him. Easily one of the all timers.
