I've been a "No ships for Alastor" person for the longest time bc I couldn't see him with anyone, but then episode 5 happened and Radioapple has taken over my life. I'm also not a big fan of making fankids/nextgens for my ships bc I don't like the idea that every couple needs a child (plus most of the ships that I like I just can't see dealing with kids)... Howeverrrrr the entirety of this ship is these two goobers trying to out-dad each other, so I just,,, created a child concept... for fun...

Premise: Lucifer and Alastor both made their own little versions of each other, so they can take their anger out on them, Charlie finds out, the above interaction happens, BOOM! Congratulations you goobers you now have a child.

Charlie is absolutely extatic about her new little brother, Lucifer is shocked at first but comes around quickly, Alastor... Alastor takes a while to warm up to the idea, but Cider's cuteness slowly wins him over. He 100% tries to hide it tho.

not necessarily related to Kofi, just rambling. I've been chewing on "how can Tim, who is smart enough to find Crypid!Batman, not have noticed that the other Robins turn into cryptids?!" And my answer is that each Robin, in this timeline, became Robin the year their character was first seen in the comics. So Dick would have been in 1940, Jason in 1983, and so on. there's a 6-year gap between Jason and Tim at minimum even if you don't adjust Tim to 2023. Which if you add in the "weird cryptid media powers to make people not notice that Brucie has been 35 for 80 years" might get Tim to not notice? Or the other Robins are "handling" being crypids like true batfam. As in not. "I'm fine, it's just my third busted rib this month. Yeah I'm human, I just drink a lot of alcohol and reuse my chemistry equipment for food. it's fine I cleaned it."

Steph and Tim, feral little gremlins that they are, don't notice a thing. Jason didn't have time to develop enough cryptid-ery to notice, but is gonna be REAL confused when Talia describes all the usual Lazarus Pit side effects to him and covers literally none of his "side effects". Dick just thinks civilians are weird, who CAN'T bend their spine into a perfect circle?? Maybe you should do some more stretches, Wally. Cass assumes everyone else already knows what's going on here and she just didn't have enough language to pick up on the explanation when being originally brought into the family, and Duke just thinks it's all meta-related.

Simon is probably such a good caregiver. Carries feral around however they ask, piggyback, bridal, on his hip. They ask, it's happening. Probably has cooked with feral on his hip more than once, them babbling his ear off as he nods and hums along.

Loves feral with all his heart and wants them happy, and stops at nothing to show it. And if that means he has to buy all of the original Barbie, Monster High, Bratz, Blues Clues, etc movies/shows/dolls. It's happening.

(in the og Barbie movies, I've noticed that while they reuse names and models for the girls, most won't receive the same name other than Barbie. Simon has also noticed after watching so many and is always confused on who's who even tho feral knows.)

This man spends a whole lot of money on TV subscriptions a year just to make sure Feral has a constant supply of cartoons and shows. Will probably sometimes turn on one in the morning if he has to leave for a few hours so feral doesn't wake up to a quiet house and can just slip right into whatever headspace they need until he gets home. (Sometimes regressors find comfort in horror flicks too, and while Simon doesn't understand how, he indulges nonetheless)

Lets feral call him whatever nickname or title they find necessary (or funny), he finds it endearing and unbelievably cute. There's no way he'd ask them to stop.

Helps them do their hair in the morning. It's just too much for feral to deal with in the morning so he sits them on a comfy chair in front of a mirror and listens to them talk as he does their hair. (Has spent SOOOO much time on YouTube and Google researching hair types and styles, he's basically a professional at this point.)

Tea parties in the sun porch<3

Sits with feral on the couch going through Amazon or Etsy to pick stuff out for them for when they regress. Nothing gets set to their house, Simon has a PO box or something set up, so sometimes feral has to wait a bit longer to get things. And sometimes has to wait until their birthday, holiday, or a special occasion to get the item. It's torture to wait 😔 but then probably forgets until they receive it.

2023 is almost over and so, I thought that I would reflect on 10 fics from the past year. It's not so much a 'Top 10 in order' as it is 10 works that wanted to reflect on for different reasons.

Don't Kink Shame Me - Hands to Yourself

Lewis Pullman is a very attractive man and I have a slight fixation on his hands. I have no idea why. This hasn't ever happened before, but for whatever reason, I love this man's hands. And so, this was a very self-indulgent way of me living vicariously through my characters. And who doesn't love a soft Bob?

That's My Man - Head Over Heels

Listen, Goose is always going to have my heart. He's my pfp and I watched TGM before TG 86 and I still had the audacity to be shocked by his death. The pre-TG dynamics between Mav and Goose (and Penny) have so much potential and the man is quite literally Husband Material. I don't write him as much anymore, but I love Goose and this little one shot that I wrote about him because I want to get swept off my feet by him too.

Sweet Tooth - Bumping Beach Bikini

This one blew up a bit and I was a little surprised by that, but it's literally so fluffy and happy and short that it's easy to love. Rooster being a goofball is a rarity in my works, but it fits this blurb so well and made me smile the whole time I was writing it. And, hey, his abs were a favorite from that beach scene, so I get where his wife is coming from. The dialogue is what really sells this story, and the ending still makes me giggle a little.

I Tried, Alright? - What is L-O-V-E?

Those of you who read and love The Danger Zone may be surprised to this find out, but it wasn't my first attempt at a Hangman / Rooster's Sister series. I don't know if my writing was just terrible or I just didn't sell the tension well enough or the OC was bland or whatever, but this story never seemed to take off and that's fine. It happens. I really loved the idea of it, but I moved onto other projects that got more attention and it just got discontinued because my ideas for it dried up. But, hey, I tried. Maybe I can reuse the premise later.

Who? - Nickie from The Forgotten Nest

Maybe it's surprising that my favorite OC isn't a love interest, but Nickie Mitchell wins the competition. He's just a goofball mama's boy who's secretly feral and I love him for it and I had a lot more freedom to do what I wanted with his character compared to a love interest. I really enjoyed writing the dynamics between him and his mom and the 'he didn't know about the pregnancy' trope that revolved around his story, even if it's cliche. I contemplated writing a spin off involving him as an adult, but it never got cohesive enough to publish, but he's still my favorite.

It Still Makes Me Cry - Family Cycles

Even though this wasn't very popular because it's Maverick/Carole and because I mostly write reader/OC inserts, it will always have a special place in my heart and I'm still incredibly proud of it. Mav's inner dialogue and the rollercoaster of emotions that he went through was just super fun to write. And Carole doesn't get enough attention in the fandom despite the fact that she's such a ray of sunshine. It's just a story that I'm very happy with even though it didn't get a lot of attention and one I reread frequently.

The Dark Horse - The Admirals Strike Back

Cyclone doesn't have a lot of works in this fandom and I get why, but I really enjoyed writing him in this little story. I just feel like regardless of who he's paired with, he definitely needs someone to make him relax outside of the job and his wife in this story fits that perfectly. And I do have a small obsession with writing 'big tough guys' as having a soft side. And cute kiddos and messing with Mav were just bonuses.

We Get It, You're Popular - Three Generations

This is still my most popular work on this site, and therefore has to be a favorite of mine. Obviously, you can't talk about Rooster becoming a father without thinking about Goose, but I enjoyed expanding off of that. Mav has his angsty moments, but there's a lot of humor too! Sort of best of both worlds. And the last bit of dialogue remains some of my favorite that I've ever written. There's no one a naval aviator fears like their pissed off wife.

What the Fuck Was I Thinking? - The Boss

I honestly don't know why I wrote this one. And then it's sequel. I think it's proof that enemies to lovers and forced proximity require some delicacy to pull off well. And I did not have it when I wrote it. And I think this solidified the decision that I'm going to leave the smut writing to the actual smut writers, because that's what this required to pull off and I just chickened out (and the fact that it's a Rooster story makes that joke even worse). It was relatively popular despite my poor writing and I'm glad that some of you liked it because at least there was a positive to the self-loathing I feel when I see it pop up.

Oldie But a Goodie - I'll Carry You

This one is still one of my favorites that I've ever written. We've got professional Jake (because no one can convince me that this man is not trying to make admiral one day), protective Jake, and soft husband Jake all in one. And I really wouldn't mind getting a piggyback ride from him. Or, even better, a bridal carry. It's relatively short and sweet but hits the right spot when you need a little soft fluff.

esp after seeing all the growth and progress everyone had been making (hell, even monoma was getting his time up) you started to get anxious abt your abilities

four things/people at a time besides yourself was still a pretty fresh step forward, and initially you were very proud, but over time it just felt like less and less of an accomplishment. yes, tou pressed for a fifth.

and no, it wasn't going well.

during one training,, you were REEEAAALLY pushing. and aizawa was trying to help you w that, but he didn't realize just how hard he was pushing bc... well, naturally, you being more reserved, you didn't say anything about it. he didn't notice until you were bordering tears, and rather uncharacteristically starting showing how hard you were straining out loud.

"ah-... AGH! I CAN- I- HH-!!"

he started calming the pressure, realizing that maybe this wasn't the greatest ideas. and then a fifth object started shrinking. you saw it, and pressed harder, the motivation driving you, but then the other objects started growing. why was this happening? they were supposed to go back to normal on their own, a new shrinking object isn't supposed to effect them. why the fucking hell was this-?

you didn't realize his quirk was being used on you until you relaxed for a moment and all four objects stayed the same size. you tried catching your breath and then were aware of the eyes on you and :(

as soon as he blinked, you were shrunk down.

yeah, it was...kinda awkward. and you wanted to hide forever.

but then

a couple of them, namely momo, shinsou, the dekusquad, koda, and tentacole, showed up at your door.

and they. they told you how awesome it was that you made that bit of progress. momo even made little toy versions of the things you'd shrunk, and suddenly you wanted to shrink again HRNDN

BC THEY WERE SO SWEET???

and the rest of the class obviously cheered you on the next training, and the next, and the ones after that.

they believed in you. but ultimately? they thought you were pretty fucking cool no matter what.

THE・Chonk Tie

We all know about Midoriya-kun's iconic tiny chonky tie. Horikoshi-sensei has already explained it away as Midoriya-kun just being bad at tying it. In Japanese he uses the word "ヘタ" (heta), meaning clumsy or unskilled.

But, just for the helluvit, I'm gonna speculate on this a bit. I think there's actually a ton of stuff packed into this tiny tie.

Midoriya-kun went to a middle school with a gakuran uniform so he likely never needed a tie. On top of that fandom likes to speculate that since his Dad isn't around, no one can actually show him how to do it. I can't disagree with Midoriya-kun just being a clumsy fashion disaster. It's a very straightforward explanation.

But in this age of tutorials and YouTube, part of me just can't let it go. And Midoriya-kun has friends now that would probably teach him if he asked. Heck, Mina-chan taught Midoriya-kun how to dance, and you're telling me she can't teach him how to tie his damn necktie???

But almost everytime we see this kid in a tie, it's always tied like that. In almost every illustration or sketch where Midoriya-kun is wearing a tie, even the gender bend one and random fun sketches posted to twitter, Horikoshi-sensei has him in some variation of this tie. He has been very meticulous about it and it's details like this that make me such a huge fan of Horikoshi-sensei.

(It's such a small detail, but it's one of my favorite parts about his design. I always see fans going on and on about his adorable face, freckles, green eyes, green curly hair... But no one talks about this damn tie!!! It's one of the best things about his design IMO. )

In fact, the only time we don't see this is the culture festival performance. That's the only time I've seen this kid with his tie on properly. Look at this perfectly tied nonsense right here!!!

(Granted, these costume ties do seem to be a bit shorter than the uniform ties. On Ochako-chan, Tsuyu-chan and Mina-chan, the ties seem even shorter.)

But assuming that he didn't get someone else to help him, or it wasn't already tied and ready to slip on (that's actually the likelier scenario, but, shhhhh!), then he actually tied that tie on properly. Considering all the practice, they had to have taught him how to tie the tie at some point.

But that said, if this kid KNOWS what he's doing, why is it that the chonk tie still lives?

Consider that a normal tie you could get away with just loosening it and just re-wearing it, but this chub version has to be re-tied every day. So why does Midoriya-kun do it, if he knows how to tie it properly?

He does it on purpose.

Midoriya-kun's tie is actually called "the superfat style".

Odd coincidence or did Horikoshi-sensei make our boy a hidden rebel?

We all know Midoriya Izuku has a baby face with a hidden rebel side. And it must be noted that in Class 1-A, everyone else, except a certain gremlin child (yes, Bakugou-kun, I'm talking about you, now shut up, I'll get to you later), has a properly tied tie.

Midoriya-kun doesn't express his rebellious nature outwardly and seems to be in line with the stereotypical cooperative Japanese rule abiding citizen. All of Class 1-A doesn't want us to go save Kacchan? Well, just watch me and my worst yakuza impression ever as I wear this fake goatee, break curfew and sneak into a villain hideout packed with several noumu and one very scary AFO.

Just what part of Midoriya Izuku isn't a rebel?!

Going back to the prototype oneshot of Boku no Hero Academia, "Boku no Hero" Horikoshi-sensei re-used the main character Jack's design. This character was actually similar to Midoriya Izuku in a lot of ways. A quirkless salary man who wanted to be a hero and used support items to fight.

Horikoshi-sensei loves paying homage to his earlier works by reusing old character designs. Tenko, Snipe, Gang Orca, and more were recognizable concepts that found their way into Boku no Hero Academia. Considering Horikoshi-sensei's heavy emphasis on the theme of 'remembering one' s origins,' it really comes as no surprise the author does this himself. He has done that quite a lot before and it's not surprising at all.

(Considering he was a professional salary man in a suit, the chonk tie is even more of a visual symbol of the maverick nature of this character.)

What came as a surprise to me is that Midoriya-kun's prototype Akatani Mikumo actually didn't have this feature. Both he and Gougou Katsuki (Bakugou-kun's prototype) wore their ties properly?

Well, I guess it's close enough on proto-Bakugou, considering our Bakugou-kun lost his tie completely... (I said, shut up Bakugou-kun, I will talk about you NEXT! Geez, this brat).

So why did Horikoshi-sensei decide to ressurect the chonk tie? Remembering his origins? As an homage to Jack? Hidden rebel? Maverick thinker? Clumsy kid? Fashion disaster? Extremely successful iconic shounen protagonist design feature?

Or maybe, all of the above...?

Either way, Midoriya-kun just wouldn't be the same without his tiny tie. And I'm here for it.

Hi! :) So I came here from ao3 - I was a huge fan of that Yuri/Claude/reader fic. When I saw you had written a fic about Geto, I screamed. I think what I like most about your writing is how you characterize everyone. Every line that Yuri, Claude, and then Geto spoke... I was like, damn, they absolutely would say that. Anyways, I'm an aspiring writer on ao3 and I was hoping maybe you could share some tips on how you write fics? Like what your process is, the research you do, etc. Thanks so much;;

AAAA THANK YOU <3 Since I love writing I'm more than happy to talk about it, but please don't take anything I say too seriously! What works for me could be pretty detrimental to anyone else, you know? Furthermore, as much as I would love to tell everyone that I am the very best, my head is not yet so empty for such extreme hubris. Also most of this stuff is just stolen from other writing advice.

When I want to write something, I usually begin by writing down the climax of the story as well as some little details I want to include. For example, the Yuri/Claude/Reader fic (Dolos) was a requested sequel. I knew the climax would be smut, I knew I wanted Yuri to eat her out, and I knew I wanted more of a mask off Claude. So I wrote this all down in stupid simplified terms and let it sit at the bottom of my doc. I find that having an outline of where I'm going, even one that's simple and stupid, keeps me from being scared of the blank page. It's easy to get lost when you have a strong starting idea but then kind of burn out which is why I really recommend knowing exactly what it is you're building up to the entire time you're writing. Your predetermined climax can change, of course, and genuine inspiration often makes the story evolve which is good and organic. Everything I've written recently has been drafted and redrafted and undergone pretty significant changes until I was satisfied, so try not to be discouraged if you find that happening. That said, keep a backup of anything you delete. You might wind up reusing it later. I have notes files on my laptop with such titles as "JUNHITO BRAIN ROT" "feral jimmy" and "third leg" that are just a mess of dialogue and stuff I cut from my most recent stories. I'm not sure if I'll use any of it ever, but it seems a shame to just dump it.

After I have the scenario vaguely planned out, I figure out what emotional and character beats I need to hit before I can get the characters to the climax and write that out in a similarly simplified, silly fashion. Obviously, this can actually be the first step because I have a scene idea that leads into a climax, but the planning process is still focused more or less on the end game. For Dolos, I knew I needed to build on Yuri and Reader's relationship and establish the uncomfortable dynamics and feelings of hers and Claude's relationship so I wrote those things down as line break headers and then expanded on those simple ideas until I had scenes. In the case of my Suguru fic, I didn't have individual "scenes" but I still broke it up with notes of what needed to happen during the course of their interaction. The tone shifts were all written in their own little segments and I actually wrote most of the back half in its own document. Breaking the fic up into manageable pieces, not caring at all about writing it sequentially, and allowing myself to skip around to work on individual sections is helpful for keeping my motivation up. If I find that I'm really stuck on something (it's always the kissing. like seriously, every time. that kissing scene with Suguru? nightmare!), I just write myself a note about what needs to happen in brackets and move on. It's like a stutter, the harder you try to force it, the worse it gets. Another trick for scene writing is writing dialogue first. I'll use some speech tags to keep it coherent, maybe a gesture, but overall it ends up reading more like a script that I can fill in with details at a later time. For characters who are exceptionally snarky like Yuri, Claude, and Suguru, I often think of a line I think is funny or clever and write that down without worrying about context.

That kinda lends itself to character writing, which is the thing I care the most about. Its also absurdly difficult and doesn’t come naturally at all. When I’m writing for a character, I surround myself with them in whatever ways I can. Like, watch/read and rewatch/reread all of their scenes a dozen times, take notes on certain verbal ticks, words they use, the sound of their voice, their attitudes towards certain things and people, filling out those character questionnaires. I try to replicate their behavior so when I put them into the scenarios I write, I feel more like I’m directing them than writing them because, ultimately, these canon characters do not belong to me. I guess I’m outing myself as the creepy obsessive gremlin I am, but this is a big reason why I write for so few characters and why everything takes so damn long... so you probably don’t wanna do it my way. I love to be praised for my characterization, believe me, but I think lots of people do a really good job without this amount of obsession. My advice is to consider the character on two levels. You have their dialogue and explicit actions, but you also have their hidden motivations and their place in your story. Think about who the character is, what motivates them, and how they behave. Step back from the plot you’ve written them into and consider the character independently, focus on their canonical actions and try to draw parallels to what’s happening in your fic to see if it makes sense for them to be there. HOWEVER, I don’t think there’s necessarily a wrong answer here, everybody interprets characters in different ways and brings their own perspectives to the realm of fanfiction. I guarantee that there are people who will enjoy and vibe with your interpretation of characters no matter what. Write them as you view them.   

Other types of research can be good BUT don’t let it bog you down. I often look up sensory descriptors, particularly scents. Don’t tell anyone but I like to crack open the ole thesaurus because literally nobody can stop me from my bloated, overly elaborate, and quite frankly alarmingly purple prose. Probably don’t do that though. Mostly it’s probably best to write from your own experiences, imagined or otherwise. If you can imagine yourself in a scenario, you can put your readers into that mindset, too. 

Anyway that’s pretty much all the wisdom I have for you sweet anon. The biggest thing about fanfiction is that it’s incredibly thankless most of the time and if you gauge your worth by comments/interactions you’re already doomed. Write for yourself and because you want to refine this skill, write because you feel passionately about what you’re creating. Good luck!
