Ishura Volume 1: Otherworldly Action

Yeah yeah, Ishura's first volume is pretty old at this point, I know. I've had it on my shelf for a while too, and this is about a week removed from when I finished reading it. Bit of a mess, no? Anyways, I just wanted to chat about this series. My expectations, reactions, and my overall thoughts through this experience spurred on by the interest of a friend.

Right away, the world itself is an incredibly interesting one. In spite of the inclusion of "isekai" as a concept, the world they exist in stands incredibly comfortably on its own two feet. It's established, full of life and history, and much like the power and ability of our Shura, is an opaque well of indiscernible depth.

For example, the primary form of magic is called "Word Arts", an incredibly powerful but equally finnicky system, it takes the place of traditional mana in this story. But it's deeper than that. It's not just whether you have enough mana or ability to cast a spell, it's whether or not you're close enough to it.

Whether or not you are close enough to the earth around you to command it, to the water that runs through a stream, to the air or weapons or the very people around you. It's a magic system tied down by familiarity and association, which I think is an incredibly great idea. It means that it's usefulness is very sparing, relying both on the talent/affinity of the user as well as their positioning or location. Also, it's just a really great in world answer for how "Visitors" (the term used to describe people effectively "isekai'd" to this world), as well as any manner of minia (the in-world term for humans) or even intelligent beasts and monsters can communicate with one another.

Following that, a piece that might be a bit abrasive at first thanks to its late justification is the naming system. People have a primary/first name, of course. Soujirou, Alus, Higuare, Kuze, so on and so forth. But rather than a "last" name or "family" name like most are used to, they have a second name. The naming conventions for it might be a little on the nose for some though, as it's more like a "term" or turn of phrase used to refer to the characters in question. The Willow Sword, The Star Runner, The Pelagic, The Passing Disaster. They refer to the talents, perception, and feats of the individual Shura. So like I said, some might not like it, but if you think on it for a second, it makes sense. Words themselves are power, there's no better way to express a shura's/person's power than with a name that describes them.

Alright, so where to next? Maybe I'll drop by the characters. The range of characters that exists is really cool, and continues to speak to the depth and scope of the world. A humanoid mandrake, a pair of intelligent wyverns, Visitors, a living tank (yeah, that's right). The variation within the cast of Shura appearing in this volume is delightfully fresh, and dabbles in just the right amounts of each to provide a sense of the scale of the world. They might not be expanded upon or overly well developed, but the very nature of them adds a great deal.

Alongside that, the focus of this first volume is surprisingly solid. Lithia is a principality that has seceded from the last Minia nation left in the world, Aureatia. Aureatia and it's 29 officials are the vestiges of the human nations that banded together to push back the True Demon King years ago, and they don't take kindly to one of their own officials trying to make it on their own. Because of that, what started as harassment and guerilla warfare balloons into an all out do-or-die assassination attempt from Aureatia.

The concept is incredibly interesting, and aims to add to the intrigue of the world.... but it falls short. It's sped through in a first volume that introduces several characters through their own chapters while attempting to juggle the political and strategic challenges of the squabble turned battle. The fodder characters are more fodder than you could ever imagine, considering their importance prior to the overnight battle. Specific Shura end up doing nothing, while others end up the center of attention in spite of their lack of charm or interest.

Let me explain. We have eight, maybe nine? Shura that are introduced in this first volume. Most have their own dedicated chapters exploring how they come to exist in the story, and what their pasts are. Sometimes, with characters like Kuze The Passing Disaster, that introduction intertwines with the story, but it's not all of them. Because of that, quite a bit of the time ends up away from the fight between the the nation-state and nation. It's a difficult middle ground to strike, that feels like Keiso wants to explore these characters, but also wanted to explore the political tension and couldn't decide which to do in this first volume.

So, the pacing is rushed and somewhat muddy at times. Not great, but not overly terrible either. Let's talk characters, some are good, some are very much not, and others don't get the light of day. These are all Shura, incredibly strong anomalies in their world. Sometimes that's exposed through things like a Mandrake that was a battle slave that continually adapted to his environment, other times it's a Visitor that can cut anything with any old sword. Sometimes it's a character that is essentially omnipotent but struggles with the concept of morality and violence due to their age and innocence, and sometimes it's a priest/paladin that can kill anything if it attempts to harm him.

See what I mean? They're not all created equal, not in the slightest. OP ability can be incredibly well contextualized with some characters, and be nonexistent with others. It means that there's a decidedly large gap between which characters are "good", and which are "bad" (though that's not to mention those that are thrown to the wayside like Nihilo).

And because of that gulf, battles can seem... disinteresting, at times. Once I got into Lithia vs Aureatia in full, I called every death except for one. The writing of the characters exposes them to Keiso's idiosyncrasies. They don't exactly drop hints as to who will die, but as you read you can very clearly tell who is the favorites/favored in the story by how their introductions and interactions are approached.

I think worse than that though is how the Shura force an imbalance in the world building. A standing army that can be wiped out by a single person that can be hired for next to nothing, an anomaly on the scale of a monstrous winged swarm that is snuffed out without the challenger exchanging anything of value, so on and so forth. The gap in power between the average minia and a single Shura is too wide, it creates holes in the logic of the world. Why would you create a professional army, pay them, house them, and train them, when you could hire a single Shura to do the exact same duty? It's an enigmatic question that you find several times over through the first volume.

And I think that's the best way to describe it, an enigma. Much like the Shura themselves, this first volume is full of incredibly interesting and great pieces, but is marred by a handful of egregiously bad and poor decisions, coated in a questionable amount of forgotten aspects. Keiso has some truly great ideas that have formed this world, and interesting angles to approach it via, but struggle greatly with putting it together.

I'm undeniably interested in this story, but am not all for it. I don't need to pick up the second volume right away to read it, but I most likely will at some point. I think that Keiso has a lot of potential, and even still, Ishura embodies that potential. It's just that the intrigue and excitement should be tempered with a series like this. So, if you like the idea, and are aware of its shortcomings, I'd certainly say there's a solid chunk of people out there that will enjoy this series.

Star Wars Visions: Reviews Incoming!

For those few who follow my channel, you might remember that whent he last season of Visions came out I did an extra special, episode by episode reaction where I broke down what I felt worked and didn’t work about each episode, which ones really hit me and why, and all in all did the review thing. I also did a thing where - knowing that Visions is entirely non-canon - I hypothetically broke them down for compatibility to the canon setting of Star Wars: that is, which of the stories would canonize well should someone decide to give them the Harley Quinn treatment someday. This wasn’t a quality thing or review thing, exactly, and more of a thought experiment - and one I really quite enjoyed. Welp, I’m doing it again for this season as well, but this time I’m going to try to do something special... AnimatedMinds’ first video reviews! Should I actually find the time to do them, I’ll record the reviews and post them both on the Animatedminds Youtube channel - which does exist and hosts one or two reviews or attempts at directing of mine - and here. UPCOMING HORROR FILMS: Bad CGI Gator

Recently, a trailer was released for a new Full Moon Pictures film. If you know Full Moon Pictures it’s probably for films like Puppet Master (1989), Demonic Toys (1992), Castle Freak (1995), The Gingerdead Man (2005) and Evil Bong (2006). If you’ve never heard of them… I don’t know whether you’re lucky or missing out, honestly.

First Impressions

A big clap to Full Moon for embracing the trashy budget movie idea and running with it. Not just using bad CGI on purpose but giving the gator the near supernatural ability to float around and defy physics like badly layered digital effects. It takes the idea to a level I wasn’t expecting and I really like it.

The gator does seem like the funniest part of the movie so far, however. The comedy lands a little flat but it could always work better when watching the film as a whole or maybe it’s just not supposed to make you laugh and just add a lighthearted tone to the film. I can respect that. It’s a good way to balance out the maulings and dismemberments we can already see in the trailer.

My biggest criticism is generally that the main characters are supposed to be gen z, but definitely strike me more as millennials. Their humour just seems a bit… outdated. The characters being sleazy, obnoxious, discount influencers is definitely on purpose but the humour missing the gen z culture mark feels like an accident. It’s written like there obviously wasn’t anyone younger than a millennial writing the scripts here. It’s not terrible or a deal breaker by any means but it still makes things feel a little bit off when they make multiple references to being gen z and don’t act like it.

Worth a Watch?

I’d say yes! Ignoring the fact that watching another Full Moon Picture film is a good enough reason to watch it at all (just a low budget weirdness gold mine), the ideas I’m seeing already from the bad CGI gator itself are interesting enough to get me to give it a watch when it releases. Probably won’t be a priority over most other late 2023 releases but it won’t be ignored.

I’m almost 3 hours into the new QuintonReviews video (the one that’s NINE AND A HALF HOURS LONG) and I just want everyone to know 2 things (minor spoilers):

CREATING A STUDY SCHEDULE/ROUTINE 

PLANNING/SCHEDULING

LIST YOUR ACADEMIC STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES. This is so you can allocate time accordingly and avoid wasting any time. 

PRIORITISE ANY SUBJECTS. These may be subjects that will help you in your future career or just a subject you especially want a good grade in. Anything for these subjects then becomes the most important on your to-do list.

DIVIDE TIME EACH DAY. Not all days you are going to be able to sit down at your desk at the same time. Instead, according to your energy levels and planned activities, divide your time.

E.g I have cheerleading after school and I'm going to be so tired, so I’ll do my studying in the morning instead. 

ESTABLISH BREAKS. Depending on how long you can study for, place a suitable break in between. This helps make studying more productive, but only if your breaks are. 

CREATING

USE YOUR TIMETABLE. On days you don’t have a specific subject, dedicate more time to that one. 

CONSIDER YOUR LEARNING STYLE. This helps to be a bit more specific when creating it, instead of winging it and just doing anything. Having a consistent way of studying helps us learn better. 

E.g I’m a visual learner, so I’ll watch animations. I'm an auditory learner so I’ll watch a video of someone explaining it. 

KNOW WHAT YOU WILL DO DURING STUDYING. Do not just wing studying, it’s unproductive and you’re more likely to waste time instead of using it.

 Before you start studying, write a to-do list of everything you need to do during that session and how you will do it. Less time time-consuming and allows you to use time productively. 

SAMPLE – this is Lanny’s daily study routine without any upcoming tests, as an early bird, kinesthetic learner and needs breaks to think with clarity.

Morning

Review my flashcards in preparation for any test. 

Write/note any flashcards I'm struggling with. 

 Afterschool

Check seqta/school website to access my courses, in which I’ll write down which subjects I had. 

Do a few quick blurts on paper of everything I learned in those subjects with prior reading. I only do this for HASS, math and science + any electives that require it. (blurting method)

Then I recheck my blurts, add in anything that I’ve missed and correct with a different coloured pen. 

After, I push those papers aside but I do not discard them. I’ll then complete my online science homework + class workbook. If I happen not to understand anything I’ll watch a video on it and then complete some questions on that. 

I’ll take a break around now because, on an estimate, it has been around 20-40 minutes since I started depending on how my science homework is. I usually eat something and then get back to it. 

Math is next. I’ll complete any math homework, then I’ll practice doing math questions on my own. What I like to do is watch a math video, pause the question without the answer then watch to see if I got it. Effective because they explain it and I can see where I went wrong without analysing my working out which is rather time-consuming. 

I take another break. Math stuff usually takes around 20-30 minutes. 

I then do HASS, which is the easiest. I usually read an article or watch a video on hass then apply that knowledge by answering questions OR doing assigned chapter work. 

I do not study English after school, but I usually read an assigned passage/book and then try to apply any techniques/knowledge by taking that paragraph apart and analysing it. Sometimes, I write my paragraphs using any taught techniques and then mark them. 

Then, I redo my blurtings again but without prior reading then recheck and correct. Then I am finished for the afternoon!!

Evening

Review flashcards then watch a video/read an article on what I was struggling with in the morning but I do not do anything to consolidate this knowledge.

college was hard for percy.

he couldn't keep up with the long lectures or the fast paced speaking of his teachers, stumbling over his notes as he tried his best to take in everything they said. it'd be especially worse when the hour long period would end and he'd have to book it to the star bucks and few blocks down just so he could grab a coffee before he headed to the library.

the only thing good to came from this routine, percy guessed, was when he'd stumbled into you.

class had ended and percy had sure enough found himself on the same path towards the starbucks, digging around in his back pocket as he searched for any loose change he might have had. sadly, saving the world multiple times was job that was left unpaid. percy was just a broke college student, after all.

the opening of the glass door would alert you to a new customer, your head turning to see who'd came in with a slightly confused expression on your face. the place was empty - for once. poor percy - he was so caught observing the deserted place that he failed to notice you peeking at him from the counter.

a cough from you would tell him of your presence, stumbling over to the counter with a nervous laugh. for whatever reason, he couldn't shake the jittery nerves he'd get whenever he'd look up from the counter's marble material to meet eyes with you.

you made him nervous, embarrassingly so.

he'd hurriedly take his drink from your pretty hands, relishing in the 0.1 second of hand contact between the two of you as he pull his phone out, asking you for your number.

to which you happily agreed to doing.

you rubbed your clothed feet against the arm of your sofa, flipping through one of the hard cover textbooks you'd loaned from the library for your business class. the idea was to study for the upcoming exam for your class - though things happen. somehow you'd managed to start doodling small miscellaneous shapes and animals in your notebook.

you turned your attention towards the old wooden clock hanging just above your tv that displayed the words 10:30 PM on it. already past noon, where was percy? you leaned forward to grab your phone, opening it and reviewing the text message percy had sent you a few hours prior.

he and some friends had gone out for drinks after class to celebrate one of their birthdays. he'd asked if you'd be okay with him coming home late and despite your reluctancy to deal with a drunken partner, you set his worries to rest, insisting he went out with his friend requesting only for him to bring you back a slice of cake to which he only smiled and shook his head.

your gaze lingered over percy's caller id photo, chest growing heavy as you slowly found yourself starting to miss him dearly. you knew percy could protect himself, obviously. you just wondered if results would vary based on level of alcohol intake.

it was much too late to head out and find him too so the only thing you could seriously do for now is just wait for him to come home.

so, maybe the gods took pity on you this time. your head snapped towards the door as it creaked open suddenly, a slightly dazed percy scampering into the apartment. his dark raven hair was messy and sprawled across his face and his clothes, but a t-shirt and a some random jeans - were suddenly unkept and..stained.

percy mumbled out your name, a dopey grin forming onto his lips as he approached you with his arms out to you. shaken, yet relieved you allowed him to his crash his body into you, wrapping his arms around you tightly. it would've been a nice moment if his breath didn't reek of alcohol.

his grip was strong as ever, a stark contrast to the shakiness of his frame as he pulled away from you, grazing the side of your face with his hand. "were you okay without me here..?" he slurred, tilting his head to the left slightly.

"how much did you drink, percy?" you asked sternly, directing his hand from your cheek. "you reek."

percy shot you a confused look but didn't say much else, instead opting to rest his head on your chest as he cradled your torso. if you weren't so in love with him you would've likely threw him off the couch right there and then. yet, your fingers found themselves tangled in percy's hair, threading through the dark tufts gently as you picked out the various pieces of confetti that had landed it's way into it.

despite being holed up in a bar with his friends for a few hours, the smell of sea water still lingered as percy melted into your touch, his heart rate slowly every so slightly as he started to lull himself to sleep. a smile formed onto your face as you watched him quietly. he did stupid things - like jump into shark invested waters level stupid things.

but, you had to admit you could never stay mad at him for too long. one swift solemn glance from him and you'd cave immediately. you were sure, now more than ever, that no matter what happened to you - you wanted percy to be there with us along the way. things like made you realize it.

even if percy was buzzed right now, you never took a silent moment like this for granted at all. between percy's soft breaths and your pattering heart, you were sure all your fears from earlier were gone. another mutter of your name from percy catches your attention as you hum out a 'yes?'.

"i feel.." he hiccupped. "bad."

"yes, alcohol has that kind of effect on people." you joked, picking out a small pink confetti piece that was hiding in between his strands.

percy groaned. "no..it's not the beer." he turned to look up at you with a small frown.

"i ate your slice of cake.."

you stared at him momentarily before bursting out laughing, to percy's dismay. he muttered retorts to your amusement. you guess that was what the stains were. when your laughter finally ceased you simply watched percy with loving eyes, leaning forward to press a kiss to his forehead before cradling his head.

Over the past few years, Formula 1 has spread into all corners of culture, and Tumblr is no exception. People around the world have learned about F1’s 70 years of history, its international circuits in cities like Monaco and Abu Dhabi, and its Grand Prix schedule of Free Practice, Qualifying, and the races themselves. Tumblr being Tumblr, though, it’s really all about the drivers: 20 of them per year, two for each of the ten official teams. Add in all the other assorted characters that orbit around the current grid, and you have quite the lineup to follow each weekend. 

F1 and its fast boys have been appearing in our Week in Review lists as far back as 2020, and on last year’s Year In Review Athletes list, drivers took up a healthy 6 out of the top 10 spots. This year, the sport’s domination of the dashboard kicked it up a notch: There was an 18% increase in engagement with the Formula 1 tag in 2022 compared with last year, and Lestappen (aka Max Verstappen/Charles Leclerc) became the very first F1 ship to hit a Week In Review ships list on July 10, 2022.

A lot of this might have something to do with the growing popularity of Netflix’s Drive to Survive docuseries, which follows the twists and turns of each F1 season, shining a light on the personal lives of the drivers and their team members. Tumblr’s interest in the sport just feels natural: with all of its drama, excitement, and contained, charismatic, and frequently controversial ensemble cast, it seems tailor-made for Tumblr users who enjoy sports anime and adventure dramas. 

So, what’s the pitch for F1? Whether you root for the underdog or support the champion, there’s a storyline for you. The interweaving backstories of the drivers, many of whom have grown up driving together since they were kids, are like catnip to Tumblr’s love for characters with history. And, of course, there are the races themselves—high-tech cars going hundreds of miles per hour. What’s not to love? 

Or, as @gaslightgirlsummer puts it: these men are all millionaire tax evaders trying to kill each other and/or themselves in the fastest cars on the planet (that are worth more money than most people will ever have in their lifetimes) on a weekly basis.

This behavior has been repeated again and again. I would be willing to forgive and forget all of these things, IF they were first-time events or isolated incidents. They are NOT isolated incidents.

The list includes (but is not limited to):

Trying to attack his friends while they're peacefully slumbering.

The murder of countless (countless!) innocent people.

Theft. Maybe even robbery. Idfk.

Showing annoyance at the idea of saving entire groups of people from being enslaved or mass murdered. (These were two separate occasions... Yuck!)

I know I’m posting this at 8 o’cock, so many vampblr users may be currently asleep, but it’s my civic duty to provide information for the uh. The people at large. So there are more details, more moral crimes, and proof of all of the heinous actions this spawn has committed under the cut.

I am the vampire Lestat. I'm immortal. More or less. The light of the sun, the sustained heat of an intense fire-these things might destroy me. But then again, they might not.

I'm six feet tall, which was fairly impressive in the 1780s when I was a young mortal man. It's not bad now. I have thick blond hair, not quite shoulder length, and rather curly, which appears white under fluorescent light. My eyes are gray, but they absorb the colors blue or violet easily from surfaces around them. And I have a fairly short narrow nose, and a mouth that is well shaped but just a little too big for my face. It can look very mean, or extremely generous, my mouth. It always looks sensual. But emotions and attitudes are always reflected in my entire expression. I have a continuously animated face.

My vampire nature reveals itself in extremely white and highly reflective skin that has to be powdered down for cameras of any kind.

And if I'm starved for blood I look like a perfect horror- skin shrunken, veins like ropes over the contours of my bones. But I don't let that happen now. And the only consistent indi- cation that I am not human is my fingernails. It's the same with all vampires. Our fingernails look like glass. And some people notice that when they don't notice anything else.
