I genuinely think one reason 19th-early 20th century women's dress refomers seldom got any further with their aims than a few specialty garments sold here and there, was that they could often be preachy and condescending as hell

like. maybe this is just me, but if it were the 1870s and some know-it-all sneered,

"could your husband or your father live in your clothes . . . conduct a business and support his family in your corsets, . . . (or) prosecute a course of study in your chignon?" (Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, "Women's Dress In Four Parts," 1873. and for the record, she lays the blame for this "problem" squarely at the feet of other women- she's not talking about unfair standards placed on them by a misogynistic society) (I'm not saying she never said anything valuable. but. geez. there are better ways to get a wary audience on your side, girl!)

I would simply want to go to university AND make my hair even taller and ringlet-ier, just out of spite
