I get that everyone thinks Shorther is older than Ash since he's always been so much taller than Ash, even in Angel Eyes, but we never see Ash teasing him for his age, even if it's maybe like 1 or 2 years. I think they're same age, which means Shorter would've been born in the year of 2000 too. He could be younger even, but we never see Ash calling him a kid either. We see Ash teasing Eiji for his age all the time even tho it's just 2 years apart, but never them.
All I'm saying is that Shorter and Ash knew each other for a couple of years and never teased each other for their age, while Ash literally made fun of Eiji when they just met lol.

Fatiguée (Hank x Toi) - Detroit: Become Human

'Complicated' doesn't equal 'Queer'
The analysis of Mizu's gender and identity are wonderful to read. I am a massive fan of queer readings that complicate and enhance the present narrative, and feel like a natural extension of the character.
However. It is a bit saddening that people see a fraught relationship with gender and immediately label it as fraught because it's queer, instead of allowing their idea of womanhood to expand to include fraught relationships with gender expression. It's as if...the demographics Mizu's confirmed to belong to (being a woman and being bi-racial) aren't 'enough', so people have to put her in another demographic (being trans) in order to care about/understand her. It feels like it erases the specificity of her story as being ABOUT womanhood, because they cannot fathom womanhood being this full with pain and confusion without signifying queerness. For a relationship (between people, or between a person and themself) to be queer, one would say it must fall outside of the norms enforced by society. But in reality, EVERYONE is outside the norm in various ways. There is no person who's a paragon of society, strutting about confidently. It's why the 'all white men have it easy' argument fails; if it's not gender or race complicating your life, it's religion, ability, mental illness, wealth, language, or a million other things. In reality, everyone has a complicated relationship with all facets of their identity. People are forced into roles now as much as during the Edo period, just in different ways. So anyone expressing difficulty within their roles does not immediately equate to them being queer. Is Akimi queer because she wants to control her life? By modern standards, we'd say "No", because modern conceptions of womanhood include independence. But during the Edo period, womanhood equaled ownership. Seki tells this to Amiki, and she flees, determined to prove him wrong. By their standards, her attempting independence is inherently non-womanly. Another cultural/historical difference is the characters in this show don't have the luxury of their presentation being self-expression. To claim that Mizu wears pants, a hat, and cloak because she IS a man ignores that being revealed as a woman will get her kicked out of cities, killed, assaulted, or ignored. She is not living in a neutral environment and choosing to dress 'masc'; she's trying to survive. She wants to be seen as a man so she can be let into the city, and not freeze--which we see happen to a woman and her child, whom the guard refused to let in without her dead husband. If Mizu didn't have to fight and lived with people who all knew she was female--and she still dressed in men's apparel--that would signify her comfort in far queerer ways than pure survival. (Notice she wore a kimono around Mikio for years without seeming any less comfortable in it than her 'male' clothing. She dresses for her role, not personal expression.) Other characters allowed to fret over their appearance without the fans questioning their gender.
Akimi is haunted by having to blacken her teeth, since it signifies how she'll have to modify her body to appeal to the husband she doesn't want. And Taigen is distraught over Mizu slicing his topknot--not for the bald spot, as Akimi teases--but because even cutting hair was seen as defiling the body your family gave you. Additionally, it was done without his consent--therefore ruining his honor as a warrior, which was how Akimi's father justified ending their engagement. Both these reasons could lend themselves to queer narratives, but because Aikmi and Taigen dress consistently in their gendered clothing, the fans let them maintain their cultural significance and don't question their genders. Whereas Mizu looking at her boobs supposedly signifies dysphoria--and therefore being trans--as opposed to the growth of something that could get her discovered, and ruin her life. Bit inconsistent, no? I can see where people relate to the androgyny/trans/nonbinary reading of Mizu--but that should be an expansion of themes, not an exclusion. Let womanhood stay part of that analysis. Please.
I've been longing for a show to critically dissect womanhood in a historical and cultural context, and was so excited to see if other people felt as seen as I did. So watching some Queer headcanons ignore the established cultural, character-specific, and plot of the story...kinda stings. It's similar to the Encanto fiasco, where fans were quick to prioritize their assumption of a character's gender/sexuality/neurodivergence over their established motives. Like Isabella not wanting to marry a man because she was a lesbian, instead of her feeling pressured to do it because it was what her family expected of someone as 'perfect' and 'pretty' as her. Being a lesbian could've enhanced that, but claiming that was the ONLY reason rubbed people the wrong way. Particularly, people who were excited to see cultural norms and familial expectations mold the characters. Now, headcanons harm no one. Characters are not fragile; they can be stretched to fit many interpretations. But when entering a fandom, we do not leave our biased baggage at the door. And it might be nice to question why we feel the need to take a situation we may not understand and reshape it to fit our modern lens, instead of growing our understanding. It's cute to imagine the characters in a less-fraught world, but...are we losing the very essence of the characters when we do?

I found this IF and have fallen in love <3! Those matches get me itching to pick up my racket again! Quick question, what are the characters' favorite drills? I know mine has always been the bouncing ball one.
Rayyan likes being fed balls to the baseline (left or right) and just pounding them back. Gets them in a flow state (and helps them vent a bit of frustration/keeps them sane).
Tobin likes condition games (where you play a game with a teammate), the mix of pitting their skills against someone in a friendly, dynamic, mentally stimulating way is very appealing (not to mention its endless variety). Otherwise, complicated partner drills with fun coordination patterns are a close second.
Sam enjoys doing sliced drop drills, something about way it bounces back towards the net--it's one of their favorite shots to play anyway, cause they love the reaction it elicits, so it makes sense they'd want to perfect it. They also like new drills, anything they haven't seen before.
All other teammates below the cut.
Deepal likes anything that doesn't take too much energy (lazy) and allows them to chat a lot. Watching matches together or discussing doubles strategy is an example. Otherwise, they also secretly enjoy doing drills where you sprint up and down the court, cause they're good at it.
Jacks likes working on their weaknesses, so probably something like volley smashing maybe. They're a small person without bloodlust, so volley smashes are definitely not within their comfort zone.
Emerson LOVES serving, partially why they became a Serve and Volley player in the first place. As a kid, you could give them a basket of balls and chuck them in a court and they'd keep themselves entertained for hours.
Max likes lob drills, mostly because they really really depend on a good lob to get them out of trouble in the game. It's their crutch and their salvation and definitely their safe place.
Akimi likes set patterned drills (e.g. drop, crosscourt groundstroke, down the line shot) because the structure let's them focus on the technique of every shot/movement.
Lee likes hitting against a tennis wall, reminds them of their childhood and going down to the "wall" in their neighbourhood with their elder brothers.
Blake likes going to the gym/strength exercises and probably could've been a weightlifter if they didn't show so much initial promise with a racket in their youth.
Bonus: Coach Sy's fave drill is conditioned games, and Coach Jones's is a volley + run back to the baseline to get a retrieve/passing shot drill.
I think that's everyone? :)

Recent Read Manga Recommendation Round Up - Part 2
More manga I’ve been enjoying recently! Part 1 recommendation list here. Twitter link to this post here.
~Links to my other manga posts~ My personal favs/ones I super enjoyed will have a ✨ on them :)
Tumblr media
Got more new titles and shorter reads this time around!
Some of these don't have official (or unofficial) EN translations since I read a lot of JP-only manga and I’d like to make people aware of those titles too! My hope is that bringing awareness to them will help get them licensed :) I guess if any sound interesting, ask publishers to license them! I’ll link any dedicated posts I have for each title.
PLEASE LOOK UP ANY TRIGGER WARNINGS!
HISTORICAL, DRAMA
✨Tenmaku no Jadoogar: A Witch’s Life in Mongol by Tomato Soup
(2 volumes, ongoing)
JP only. The first 5 chapters are up for free in JP here. English summary in this post
Tumblr media
A learned Irani slave girl is taken captive by the Mongols in the 13th century and has to use her knowledge to survive. Well-researched historical fiction about Fatima, who was a real person in history. I wrote a long detailed post about it, so check it out!
DRAMA, MYSTERY, ART
✨Untitled Blue by Natsume Yukiko
(2 volumes, ongoing)
JP only - English summary in this post
Tumblr media
I fell for Untitled Blue SO HARD, and I need the next volume immediately. A suicidal boy who just wants to make art uses the name of a burnt-out prodigy girl to sell his works in anonymity. The found family vibes and feels are strong in this one... And there are some absolutely SICK pages in this.
DRAMA, PSYCHOLOGICAL, ROMANCE
Haru’s Curse by Konishi Asuka
(2 volumes, complete)
Available in English
Tumblr media
A woman falls for her dead sister's man and we follow a story about guilt and grief. This is a well-written short manga that tackles touchy topics in a thoughtful manner.
PSYCHOLOGICAL, DRAMA, SCI-FI
Takopi’s Original Sin by Taizan5
(2 volumes, complete)
English available to read on mangaplus
Tumblr media
A short manga that was quite popular in Japan by the same author of the currently publishing Jump series The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins, this title is a good intro into Taizan 5's work. The art is expressive, the page turn is used well, and it takes a look at human psychology through three children with complicated relationships and living situations.
LGBT, SLICE OF LIFE
Kawa yori mo Nagaku Yuruyaka ni by Yoshida Akimi
(2 volumes, complete)
JP only
Tumblr media
From Yoshida-sensei of Banana Fish fame, this short manga predates her more well-known work and you can see her explore some of the themes and ideas that you'll often see in Yoshida's works. I didn't relate to the characters (Which is actually nice sometimes! Different perspectives are good!) and it's kind of a weird manga, but it got a few laughs out of me and it was cool seeing Yoshida experiment.
Tumblr media
This is how he introduced himself to an American working at the base - WILD
COMEDY, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Let's Go Karaoke! by Wayama Yama
(oneshot)
Available in English
Tumblr media
I've been eyeing this title for YEARS and almost bought it so many times. Finally read it and idk why it took me so long. A charming, quirky, silly, wholesome story about a yakuza getting singing lessons from a choir kid. There's a sequel that's currently being published, ファミレス行こ/Famiresu Iko/"Let's Go To a Diner," but it seems to have a slow release schedule and hasn't been released in volume form yet. I don't see it available to read digitally either so I guess we'll just wait for a tankobon release.
COMEDY, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Captivated, by You by Wayama Yama
(oneshot)
Available in English
Tumblr media
A wholesome quick read that left me with a smile on my face. The characters in this manga are just sweet kids and it's delightfully mundane. I mean that in the best way. It was just so nice to read.
COMEDY, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Onna no Sono no Hoshi by Wayama Yama
(3 volumes, ongoing)
JP only
Tumblr media
More of Wayama Yama's infectious brand of humor and fuzzy feelings that I'm completely in love with at this point. Read what I said for the last two titles - same good stuff.
DRAMA, SCI-FI, MYSTERY
✨Gene Bride by Takano Hitomi
(2 volumes, ongoing)
JP only - English summary in this post
Tumblr media
Sci-fi title that slowly unfolds its mystery and features two incredibly charming characters with a hilarious dynamic and tons of personality.
DRAMA, SLICE OF LIFE
✨Ikoku Nikki by Yamashita Tomoko
(10 volumes, ongoing)
JP only
Tumblr media
My current read!
15-year old Asa's parents passed away in a car accident and her aunt, Makio, who works as an author has taken her in. This series is so human and makes me feel too seen and it's too relatable... Gives me the warm and fuzzies but also makes me want to cry. I need Makio in my life tbh.
Tumblr media
Just gonna leave this here...

Jack’s Thoughts on Katsushika Division
Tumblr media
Akihisa Mashiro
“Outside of the basic knowledge that most people have about his career in assassination, I don’t know much about him. Rumors circulate him constantly, however, knowing the bare minimum about his history, I don’t think it is wise to get too close to him. Being around someone like Mr. Mashiro can prove to be dangerous in most cases. I wouldn’t like to risk the chance.”
“...And I hope he hasn’t had to target them.”
Touya Kisaragi
“I’m a little too familiar with Mr. Kisaragi. In between working with the detective from Suginami and my young Master, I suppose it was inevitable. I want to say that he has developed an attraction for Mr. Edogawa, but it might be something more twisted. I had to step in when he began to threaten young Master Daiki for following the detective. Nothing drastic was done, I just assured Mr. Kisaragi that my young Master wouldn’t get in the way of their relationship and that young Master Daiki is not competition. Which, isn’t very far from the truth. Young Master simply looks up to Mr. Edogawa as a teacher and nothing more. For extra assurance, I promised that if my young Master were to cross Mr. Kisaragi’s boundaries, I would personally take care of the problem so that he would not get into trouble. What, with that little neck problem this team appears to have. That may be a partial lie… But it’s the only thing I can do to prevent a serial killer let loose to the person in my care.”
“Still, because of that, young Master Daiki can continue his activities peacefully and Mr. Kisaragi seems to be satiated. And as a bonus, the cheeky little thing doesn’t bother me. Not often, at least. I’ll entertain him if he spots me tailing the young Master, yet I try to keep a boundary between us. I know what he does with people who get close to him and I would rather not perish before I finish my mission.”
Rintaro Himura
“The biggest headache of all… If you heard from young Master Daiki, you would be aware of the fraction of complaints we’ve been hearing from Master Akimi. Yes, a fraction. I am at the mercy of him as well and believe me, the calls from Master Akimi are much, much more emotional. If I were in the position to, I would tell him that we aren’t going to engage in a rap battle with him and we do not need his help to come up with lyrics to ‘diss’ this man. But I’m stuck smiling and nodding along with his suggestions. Still, I can’t say that I support his actions. Spontaneous men like Mr. Himura, who don’t think of the full consequences of their actions are less than respectable.”
Death Row Block
“If this isn’t a proper good display of how Japan’s government is failing their country? Letting death row inmates rap battle their way out of their crimes? Crimes, for killing hundreds, even thousands of innocent people? It’s bugging me that my ahem… Connections are hyper-fixated on other things when this entire country is falling apart at the seams. But why should they care, when they’re sitting all posh in their bloody office chairs?”
“A-Apologies, I shouldn’t lose my temper. I’ve gone on about my displeasure for this team long enough. Excuse me.”

oh no! The Cargill basketball (or soccer, or jenga, or whatever you would like) team has fallen prey to an ancient curse a day before the Big Game and the only possible substitutes are our lovable band of tennis goofs! How do they do? Who faceplants the moment they have to play a non-tennis sport? Is Rayyan capable of losing at anything?
Love this ask so much that I just might code/write it - maybe just for fun if it doesn't go into the actual IF.
Tobin
Played both soccer and basketball in middle school. With their hand-eye-coordination and awareness of their body, they really could play anything they put their mind to.
Were considering playing soccer in high school, because they love the dynamics and the excitement of playing in a team, the roar of the crowd. But gave it up to concentrate on tennis.
Playing again fills them with nostalgia, reminding them what they loved about the game as a kid.
Just like on the tennis court, Tobin moves with an easy, agile grace and is a natural leader.
Attacking midfielder. Intelligent, tactical, and tireless. Orchestrates both attack and defense; equally comfortable shooting from distance or sliding an inch perfect throughball.
After the game, coach unabashedly tries to poach them. “Anytime you get fed up with tennis, you have my number.”
Rayyan
Only other sport they've done is fencing, because their father is obsessed; they've always known that tennis is their true calling.
Left back. What they lack in skill, they make up for in ferocious intensity and a never-say-die attitude. Extremely competitive, and will not give up even when trailing 0-4. "You never know?! We might just score one goal per minute!"
Willing to throw themselves at the ball (or the opponent) in last-ditch flying dives. While Tobin leads most of the attack & overall play, Rayyan is king of the back 4, rock solid in defense.
Even though tennis is a non-contact sport, they somehow immediately take to tackling/fouling opponents as though they’d been trained. Intimidation level is a solid 12/10, able to stare down rampaging attackers and singlehandedly reduce them to a floundering mess.
Coach is quite terrified of them, tbh. Gingerly asks if they’ve ever considered football. As in, American football.
Deepal
Has played a bit of soccer recreationally, when growing up in India - with friends, family etc.
Right winger. Blistering speed, creative, with improvisional flair and a knack for the unpredictable. Slippery like an eel. Very deadly down the wing. Not above cracking a joke as distraction.
Jacks
Goalie. Calm, unflappable.
Chose this position because they're happy with a slightly lower level of baseline ‘excitement’; happy to watch the action from afar, sometimes doing a little celebratory jig from the other end, when the team scores.
Emerson
Right back. Rayyan’s terrifying twin in defense. Full of bluster and hot air and physicality. Unlike Rayyan, though, they’re really hopeless in terms of skill – sometimes mistiming their sliding tackles, or tripping over themselves. Most likely to faceplant in an overly enthusiastic tackling attempt.
Sometimes, Rayyan half-feels like throttling Emerson, instead of the opponent, constantly shouting “SAFETY FIRST,” and “JUST CLEAR IT WHY DON’T YOU”.
Greatest strength = trash-talking the team until they get pissed and fumble the ball, at which point Emerson will swoop in to snatch the ball away. Fond of hacking the ball far up-field in hail-mary attempts.
Max
Center-forward/striker. Playful, ingenious, with a telepathic connection with Deepal, who feeds them incisive passes in the penalty area.
Is a little short, though, and is terrible at taking corners; Constantly tackled, causing Rayyan to be up-in-arms and ready to kill any opponent defender who so much as lays a finger on them.
Akimi
Defensive midfielder; Quiet, no-frills, gets the job done. Fluid and versatile, works well with Tobin.
Not particularly talented, but is pretty sensible (keeps their head in a scuffle, always there to separate Rayyan or Emerson when they butt up against an opposing player)
Sam (bonus)
Has absolutely brilliant moments as a center forward/false nine. Can score with every part of their body, including knee, nose, stomach, etc. with an uncanny ability to shrug off their defenders and read incoming passes.
Sam dribbling through the defense is truly a sight to behold. However, they also have their moments of complete comedic gaffes - especially when they lose concentration/start daydreaming or chatting with opposing players/spot a funny sign in the crowd.
G (bonus)
A scarily good coach/analyst.
Familiar with soccer because they grew up watching and playing a bit of soccer with their friends, and although they are actually surprisingly good with the ball, would prefer contributing off the pitch with devastatingly sharp, astute observations of strengths/weaknesses, optimal formations etc.

I’m really jealous of everybody who can enjoy Buddy Daddies because this anime makes me so angry.
I KNEW that nothing will happen between Rei and Kazuki but still the whole presentation is just... ARGH!
Yeah, its not a 1:1 Spy x Family copy but still try to ride that wave, don’t fool yourself! But it would be more obvious with a straight couple, so why not make this show with two dudes? Genius! In that way, they can get the queer people and fujoshis/fudanshis’ money, but they won’t make their relationships gay, so everybody can “safely” watch it. That’s just disgusting to me.
I’ve already seen people saying that they’re happy that it’s not gay, so they can enjoy and watch it. Because, you know, if it’s gay and you’re straight, its physically impossible to you to watch something. *irony* And on the other hand people are like “yeah I know they won’t gonna get together but stll ship them”. Yeah, that’s the problem. They knew that a lot of people still gonna watch it and ship the protagonists, and that’s enough for them, because they already got your money. Even though they spit you in the face.
Do I want that Rei and Kazuki have sex? Hell no, who tell you that? This is not that type of anime, so of course it’s totally okay if they have a more “kid friendly” relationship. But I still would like to see some confirmation that they’re together, or get together later. A meaningful handholding, or a romantic hug. But this never gonna happen. Is there a chance that one of the guys is bisex? Of course, but you never gonna know it because in Japan media, there are no bi people (except if they want to make a gay character “straight”, like Mikasa in Fuuka, who “was” gay for 200+ chapters, and then he fell in love with his female teacher under tho chapters and got together... yeah, fuck you Seo Kouji, you coward bastard!)
I hate when people say that Japan is some safe place, where feminism and wokeness and “gay agenda” are unknown because it’s just not true. They has a lot of feminist manga/anime (like the whole mahou shoujo genre) and they has queer anime/manga from like the ‘80/’90s. CLAMP, Ikuhara, Yoshida Akimi all had LGBTQ+ characters, few years ago we had Yuri!! on Ice and Sarazanmai, so it’s not like that Japan is no capable of making queer media. But you’re naive if you think its as easy as in the west. They’re still very conservative and it’s hard to make real, uncensored queer anime, without resriction.
Of course I don’t say that it’s absolutely bad if somebody like this anime, or you’re a bad person, if you ship Kazuki and Rei. You watch what you want to watch, and like what you want to like. As I said, I’m just jealous, because I want to like it but can’t. I’m still hoping that in the end I will look like a fool, because they get together, but I know they won’t. It’s just another fujoshi-bait anime, which is okay, I like a lot of these type of shows (like Free! or S8 Infinity), but this is just feel bad.

Hello good day. Can i ask where to read manga of banana fish. Is their posibility have season 2. Its so painful watching this i cant accept ash died he deserve to be happy with eiji. In manga have a garden of light there. Why not in anime dont have episodethank you..
I've not read the manga in a very long time so I'm not sure where to read it online.
So let's talk about why Banana Fish is never getting a season 2 and why they didn't animate the epilogue chapter.
Banana Fish won't be getting a season 2 because the manga is over and they adapted (nearly) everything. The closest we could get is if a studio ever adapted Yasha. Yasha is another manga by Akimi Yoshida following an entirely different set of characters years after the events of Banana Fish. Sing is featured, Yut-Lung is mentioned and Ash gets hinted at.
If you want more Banana Fish content, there's plenty of side content. There's Private Opinion, Angel Eyes, and Fly Boy in The Sky, which are all set prior to the events of Banana Fish. There's also New York Sense which is an album/art book of all the pictures Eiji took during and after Banana Fish (even spanning after the epilogue chapter, Garden of Light).
Garden of Light was published in the final volume of Banana Fish. It's set 7 years after Banana Fish and follows Akira, Ibe's niece, who comes to stay with Eiji in his home in New York as he's preparing to launch his photo exhibition.
Originally, many in the fandom thought we'd get a GOL OVA. This never happened and, now 4 years on, almost definitely never will.
IIf I had to guess why GOL never got animated, I'd say it was because of:
1) Time constraints
It's impressive that MAPPA managed to adapt a 19-volume manga into a 24-episode show. They were already having to cut and rush through things.
2) Wanting to keep the ending open to interpretation
The anime clearly wanted to keep the ending more "open." Whilst many will say that Ash dying is obvious in the anime too, it technically was never confirmed in the anime. After every episode aired, there was a little relationship chart showing who was alive, who was dead, and what everyone's connections to each other were. After episode 24 aired, the relationship chart changed several times. This wasn't usual. Normally, a new, updated chart would be released, and that was that. This chart originally showed Ash as dead, but later it showed that maybe he was alive.
(You can read the relationship chart here and all the changes made over the course of several hours after the final episode aired.)
Why would the anime do this?
It could be for marketing reasons. For example, after the show aired, people would look at newly released official art and speculate if it showed a post-canon Ash and Eiji together. It could be that someone on the team wanted to change the ending but couldn't because they weren't allowed to. They may have thought it would be better because this is such an old manga and it had never had an anime adaptation before then. So it wasn't important to do the story justice.
I really don't know the real reason, so this is purely speculation.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Thanks....
OMG! I feel like I'm about to reveal way too much of myself here but your question is greatly appreciated. I had to take a minute to really think about this as I forgot every bit of media I’ve ever consumed so I mostly focused on recently consumed media that I could recall in a panic. I'm sure as soon as I post I'll be like "damn, I forgot about X!"
Heaven Albright - Stupid & Contagious by Caprice Crane
This book was so funny to me when I was younger I literally handed out copies of it. Looking back, it’s probably because I immediately identified with her penchant to overthink a situation but she’s also able to finesse even if it is by the seat of her pants. In fact, she only seems to shine when she’s really trying because otherwise she’s doing one embarrassing thing after another. But when it’s time for her to kick it up, she could be in her head about what she’s doing but make it seem effortless and nonchalant. She can be a little shit when she wants to be but she’s filled with great ideas, if she only had the chance to knock one out of the park. At the beginning, she finds herself perpetually down on her luck but she eventually finds her way along and I loved that for her (even if it is bumpy).
Tumblr media
Aslan Jade “Ash Lynx” Callenreese – Banana Fish by Akimi Yoshida (anime only)
I am incredibly fond of Ash and, while I want to read the manga for some semblance of closure, I’m still regularly devastated by the anime so I can’t yet. The man is a survivor. He is the grass that grows through cement sidewalk. He tripped over banana fish and never shied away from the task of tracking it down and stopping it at the source, no matter how large the conspiracy got or how much he lost. My heart feels heavy any time I see a Banana Fish edit or any fanart, even the happy ones. He is tough as nails and yet, as soft as an exposed nerve which is really apparent with Eiji’s introduction. I think it showed how, despite what he’d been through and the face he wore to hide its impact on him, he was still incredibly hopeful that he’d one day be loved and accepted by someone sincerely. (side note: yes, I got sad thinking about this.) He was incredibly brave because he had no other choice.
Tumblr media
Satoru Gojo – Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami (manga and anime)
Gojo deserves more grace than some of the JJK fandom gives him, I swear. The man is deeply traumatized from a very young age and puts on a brave (and puckish) face just to keep moving forward. I don’t love him because he’s overpowered but him being overpowered is part of why I love him. He hails from one of the top three jujutsu families and could be a shitstain like Naoya Zenin but he isn’t and I think that’s part of why so many people misinterpret his character. There was a tweet, since deleted, (I think from @bcllamyy) that asserted that the reason why a lot of people assume Gojo is a douchebag is because they can’t imagine being strong and beautiful and not being a garbage human. Gojo is canonically strong and attractive but is a relatively good person. He takes care to save students in hopeless situations and preserve as much of their youth as he can because he didn’t have that growing up. I’ll concede that this isn’t purely altruistic, he has a clear objective in mind in taking these kids under his wing, but that’s about as much as you can expect from someone who didn’t have a proper childhood himself. His power was both feared and coveted by others and it left him incredibly lonely until he found an equal, the one and only person he could have by his side. It’s the take-it-with-a-smile trauma response for me. Heavy is the head and all. Oddly, this is my comfort character rn so things are not going well.
Tumblr media
Levi Ackerman – Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama (manga and anime)
Levi Ackerman refuses to die because he’d have to go back to hell and, quite frankly, most devils don’t know how to properly clean up after themselves. Levi being picked from the gutter and growing to become Humanity’s Strongest Soldier despite his diminutive size and destitute origins is so ironic. Putting his life on the line and fighting for those that condescend to people from where he came from, he carved out every inch in the path to where he is now. This is a man who does not die and carries the weight of his fallen comrades into every battle. While seemingly cold and angry, he is, in very small gestures, shown to be incredibly compassionate and forlorn. I think he just knows that if he thought about the circumstances of those living within the walls or even of those he’s left behind on the battlefield, that he would find no meaning in trying to escape the walls or get out of bed at all.
Tumblr media
Hermione Granger – Harry Potter by She Who Must Not Be Named (novels and movie)
Given the author’s penchant to be a shit-eating TERF, it’s hard to admit that this franchise was such a big part of my childhood. I primarily identified with Hermione and her predilection to be an insufferable know-it-all and her tendency to stick her nose where it didn’t belong. Considering the author, perhaps she intentionally made Hermione’s creation of Society for the Promotion of Elfish Warfare (SPEW) seem so outlandish and mockable in universe... but that’s beside the point. Hermione, regardless of her social standing in the muggle world, came into the wizarding world at a disadvantage and showed everyone her ass as she bested them time and time again. Not only that but, rather than make herself small after being called a “mudblood”, she continued to soar and was loud and proud about advocating for others who were also disadvantaged. She could be the brightest witch Hogwarts had seen and still be unlikable, bushy hair and all. Despite not being of the wizarding world initially, she made a point to be in the know and was voraciously studious, frequently navigating things better than Harry who came into the wizarding world at the same time with a similar level of working knowledge but largely remained clueless. Baby girl had to drag him through the plot and to the point most of the time.
Tumblr media
Tina Belcher - Bob's Burgers
Because same. BIG same. Tina is the mood, the vibe, the moment. Add the rest of the Belcher family to this as well tbh. Tina, like the rest of the Belcher family, is unapologetically her. Regardless of whether freaky friend fiction is the way to go, she unabashedly puts herself out there again and again despite her groan inducing anxiety. She knows she's that girl even when navigating the ups and downs of whatever life (or that B Tammy) throws at her.
Tumblr media
Katsuki Bakugo – My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi (manga and anime)
I’m not caught up on the manga yet (so close but so far) but Kacchan’s character has a special place in my heart. I think as the reader, we’re meant to be stymied by him as we view the story through Deku’s lens because Deku lacks the comprehension of a non-biased narrator. Understanding this, I came to love (or maybe pity) his character while reading the manga because, when I was an anime only, I found his abrasiveness toward Deku to be incredibly unpalatable (because it is). However, reading through the manga as slowly as I am, I recognize that they’re both emotionally constipated kids being weaponized by some invisible hand while trying to understand and reframe their connection to one another. Literal children grappling with the burden of being heroes and finding it’s not all it’s cracked up to be while self-actualizing under duress. Casual. Bakugo is fierce, prideful, aggressively loud, and largely dislikable. He shoulders public criticism from adults who don’t bother to understand his dysfunction but continues to press on in the right direction because he’s idealized this for so long and wonders if he's, in fact, deserving or good enough. I think what’s captivating about his character in the manga is that he’s presented as a very static character but he’s slowly being exposed as a more dynamic character in tandem with Deku's (power) evolution.
Tumblr media
Dean Winchester – Supernatural
There’s something about a closet nerd himbo who calls his vintage car “baby” that speaks to me. Dean Winchester, very much brawn over brain, maintains a doe-eyed innocence and sense of wonder for the things he missed out on while growing up under the “tough love” of John Winchester and I love that dichotomy. You never get the sense that his unconventional lifestyle bothers him or that he feels he lost out on anything but then you see the bravado falter when he allows himself to enjoy something other than the thrill of a one-night stand. The biggest things that come to mind are when he was like a kid in a candy shop in the bunker having found a place to set up roots and him sleeping easy when he was able to settle down with Lisa. Both always struck me as so sad. I think back to the parts of himself that he hid from Sam (like his time in the halfway house) and for the delight he had to find in small comforts like pie. Family was all Dean knew and he grabbed at it desperately and to his own detriment time and time again.
Tumblr media
Nicholas D. Wolfwood - Trigun by Yasuhiro Nightow (anime only)
I love the contradiction of Wolfwood's character. He can, for all intents and purposes, be considered a sinning holy man though he does have morals. I have a soft spot for antiheroes (see: love for Wolverine and Deadpool) though I'm not sure Wolfwood cleanly fits into this classification. He is certainly someone who will do "bad" things to satisfy a "good" goal though. For lack of a better word, his innuendos suggest he's led a less than savory life before becoming a man of the cloth and he is clearly fine with toeing the line when someone is watching. But make no mistake, the ends justify the means when he needs to make a game time decision on what to do. There's a reason that cross is a burden to carry and he's just the man to bear it. At the crux of everything, he has a sympathetic heart and this was the first anime that made me cry.
Tumblr media
Nobara Kugisaki– Jujutsu Kaisen by Gege Akutami (manga and anime)
This explanation contains a spoiler for the manga so I put her at the bottom in case you wanted to avoid.Nobara is a refreshing departure from the static nature of a shonen tritagonist. For one, she has zero romantic interest in Itadori nor Fushiguro and I don’t see that changing, especially after their initial introductions. She lets them as time progresses but she carries her own weight and isn’t a damsel in distress relegated to do nothing toward her own rescue. She can independently take down a Special Grade curse (and pull off a black flash) while feeling and looking good doing it. Nobara’s femininity is something she’s vocal about, questioning why kicking ass can’t be feminine, and she safeguards it from antiquated notions from the likes of Mai and Momo. Though hailing from the country where her stubborn individuality stuck out like a sore thumb, she’s unabashedly a material girl and so fiercely confident, she dares anyone to look down their nose at her. I can’t imagine we’ve seen the end of her story since she’s such a vivacious character. Maki also deserves to be on this list but I tried to diversify source material. Plus, a lot of what makes her awesome would be an even bigger spoiler if you’re not caught up.
Looking back on this list, there's a distinct theme of main character energy but also a significant lack of diversity. I realized that some of my favorite pieces of media didn't necessarily have a breakout character in my mind, either. This was such a great exercise, thank you for asking! Who are your favorite characters and why, @elaine2895?

Out of curiosity why did you choose to have the men and women's tennis teams train separately? Will there be mixed doubles teams as well? I really enjoy Tobin and Rayyan, but would be nice to have them be opposite gender too 😊
Otherwise really liking the story!
Hahaha. Okay, I sense my answer is going to be hella long because it's something I've thought about extensively (I don't know how many of you are that interested in the (over)thinking I do with regard to my world-building/narrative-plotting/character-development), but here we go!
I think there's two questions here: (1) why Tobin and Rayyan are only same-gender, and (2) why the men's and women's teams train separately. I think these are separate considerations, so I've answered them separately! [Technically, Tobin and Rayyan could be same-gender i.e. on MC's team, AND the men's and women's teams could train together].
Why are Tobin and Rayyan same gender?
In the NCAA competition format, men's and women's teams compete separately. The relationships between Tobin x MC and Rayyan x MC are almost wholly dependent on them being on MC's team, e.g. competing together, being doubles partners etc.
(Long answer below the cut)
Why do the teams train separately?
Even the side characters (e.g. Deepal, Jacks, Emerson) have their specific interactions/dynamics with MC based on having to compete for spots on the same team or being possible doubles partners (in the case of Jacks).
Hence, I could write the men's and women's teams training together, but most of the characters you'd actually hear about / get to interact with at length with would still be same-gender. Max or Akimi or Blake etc. could be opposite-gender, though, so maybe it is worth thinking about! [When I played in college (not div 1 or anything), we trained separately so I just wrote what I knew BUT I do know some colleges train together!
Whenever I have the time, I might think about rewriting to have em train together, but it won't be on my top priorities--just because of the amount of work that'd be involved!]
More on Tobin and Rayyan being same-gender:
There are very few competitive mixed doubles matches in NCAA—maybe a few standalone tournaments, and mixed doubles are never really used to determine the college's overall standings/path to the championships)
Hence, if I wanted Rayyan and Tobin to be main characters in the IF that (a) play/compete with MC, and (b) have the chance to be MC's doubles partner in official competitions, they'd have to be the same gender. Writing them opposite-sex would change the entire nature / dynamic of their relationship with MC.
Rayyan's meant to be MC's main rival, first upset that they're partnered with MC (if they are), then grudging respect for MC as they realize that they're actually good, better than anyone else they've ever played with, then grapple with the tension that MC might actually be better than they are.
Tobin's meant to be MC's captain, and also another possibility of a doubles partner—an alternative or narrative foil to Rayyan, and provide the possibility of exploring an arc where one of the team's best players actually does not feel threatened by this young upstart.
Mixed doubles / opposite-gender tennis RO?
That said, I did make Felix, Tobin's ex on the opposite-gender team, a more integral character to the IF. There'll be a mixed doubles session where MC gets to partner Felix, and that'll be fun regardless of whether MC ever wants to pursue anything further with them.
MCs can and will be able to... "do the dirty" with Felix at least once, and have this impact the narrative, even if it'll never be a r'ship that's romantic in nature. So, a half-compromise of sorts?
Another reason why I liked this narrative solution so much is that Sam and Felix are both... kinda chill people (well, Sam's nice/fun, G is too ironic/dry to ever actually give off "I'll fight you" vibes) so I thought someone grumpy and very hostile would round out the semi-RO options for MCs who don't date same-gender characters.
[That said, Felix is written as canonically non-binary, though originally they were written more as gender-selectable (i.e. nb or opposite-sex). So I'm aware it's still not exactly a hetero/'straight' relationship.]

Introduction Post
Hi, my name is Jo, I use he/him pronouns and I am a binary gnc transmasc. I am the current only moderator of the rainbow-dash-sideblog tumblr blog, an archive of various art pieces relating to Rainbow Dash from the cartoon series My Little Pony(as well as her previous and future iterations) and Rainbow Dash-adjacent characters.
Feel free to send things about your RD headcanons, xenogenders, etc etc. As long as they are SFW.
FAQ (aka don't ask these questions please)
What is this blogs purpose?
The simple answer is, "To archive media surrounding a popular cartoon character that the moderator(s) enjoy." There are more personal reasons, of course, though at the end of the day, this is just a blog that reblogs and tags things. I, myself, consider it to be a 'project' in the sense that I wish to keep it up forever.
Why make a blog like this?
Because I was bored and I like Rainbow Dash. I also enjoy archive blogs such as @heritageposts and I've always dreamed of creating and moderating a blog similar to that. Though R-D-SB focuses more on recent artworks that are very likely to be forgotten and buried rather than old iconic posts of Tumblr's past.
You said you wanted to keep this blog up forever, what do you mean?
I mean that even if I decide to deactivate my main blog(@vampiricspectrumdisorder), I will manually transfer all of this blog's content over onto a separate tumblr account so it may never be lost(...for as long as Tumblr stays around, anyway). If I deactivate my main blog and transfer all of what I currently have over to a new tumblr account, I would not expect this blog to be maintained after that point. Though, who knows. Time will tell.
Will you ever open up moderator slots?
Most likely, though I will wait to do that until this blog has at least 100 followers. I want a large enough pool to pick from.
Who is your favorite MLP character?
...Despite what you may think, it's actually Celestia...
Do you have any other blogs like this?
(nobody would ever ask this, but I want to self promote LOL...)
I do have other sideblogs(@cyberneticcelestia, where I post my artwork, @moichinagae, a community resource for YASHA(1996), an obscure manga by Akimi Yoshia, which is still in development as i figure out what to post on it). My main blog, as said above, is @radspeon where i mostly reblog things and I don't have a set blog theme.
Under the Keep Reading, there will be a list of all the tags used on this account! Browse safely, kids.
rainbow dash sideblog originals - original posts that are not reblogs
rainbow dash sideblog reblogs - reblogged posts(most of the blogs content lol)
RDAU - posts about AU’s related to Rainbow Dash
feat [character] - posts featuring another character(like the other mane 6, the princesses, Jesse Pinkman, or Sam Winchester)
transmasc RD headcanon - posts about transmasc RD(there’s so many that it deserves it’s own tag)
xenogenders - Rainbow Dash/RD-adjacent xenogenders
rd physical media - kinda self explanatory, it’s physical items that are themed around Rainbow Dash, like toys and headphones and shirts
rainbow-dash-sideblog hall of fame - images/art of rainbow dash that I think are particularly noteworthy/outstanding(not that all RD art isn’t outstanding, but I’m talking about shit that is insane), also used for historical rainbow dash posts(if I find any)
g3 rainbow dash - self explanatory, I think. It’s for RD in g3, because I love her and she deserves more love.
king sombra timeline RD - ….it’s my blog I get to decide what fits in RDAU and what doesn’t/j (no but, I think that KSTRD is different enough from other RDAU’s that she deserves her own tag!)
RD STIMS - rainbow dash stimboards
equestria girls rd - art of RD that is either based on the EG series or is just of a humanized rainbow dash in general.
rdvids - videos featuring RD
rd gifs - gifs featuring RD

Daiki’s Thoughts on Katsushika Division
Tumblr media
Akihisa Mashiro
“...I dunno. Jack’s telling me that Akihisa is a dangerous guy who’s killed hundreds, maybe even thousands, which is objectively really bad! Super-duper bad, even! I just… Want to give him a little trust? Like the name he picked, Azrael! People always look at Azrael like he’s bad, but he’s more like an anti-hero. In the American comics my friends showed me or the mobile games I play sometimes, he’s just… Death. He’s just doing his job. Look, I don’t like anti-heroes, but sometimes when push comes to shove, you gotta team with these people for a common goal. So… I guess what I’m saying, is that I wanna keep him at arm’s length. I don’t like him or trust him! I just think I could give him a chance! Maybe… I would need to figure that out for sure by meeting him. That’s only if Jack will let me.”
Touya Kisaragi
“The dodgy weirdo that won’t leave Master Shuu alone! Always creeping around thinking I don’t see him! I mean, I only saw him once, but that was enough for me to run after him and chase him away! And he thought it would be really funny to threaten me! You would have to be bonkers to think that you can hog him to yourself!”
“I’m miffed that Master Shuu doesn’t mind it because I would hate for some person, much less a criminal to follow me around. At least he stopped trying to intimidate me. Shows that I’m the stronger one! Soon, evil will be vanquished! Just need to figure out why someone like him gets another chance. He’s not like Akihisa. He’s pure evil!”
Rintaro Himura
“Sure, he’s a villain, blowing up buildings and stuff. He’s like a classic bad guy. I just don’t know if I can fight him if my family is already dogpiling onto him. Well, Rintaro and the people who let him out. What did they expect, releasing this fiend when he’s responsible for totaling a couple of my family’s hotels? Akimi is the most pissed off about it, since Japan’s his responsibility. Ever since I got into this D.R.B. stuff, Akimi has been sending me letters pestering me about all the things I should be telling this guy. At this point, I want to pity Rintaro. Because if I’m getting these letters from Akimi, imagine the sort of shit he’s getting!”
Death Row Block
“I get the idea of giving people a chance at redemption, but did they really have to pick these villains? Like, real-life villains! The D.R.B. shouldn’t be responsible for teaching these guys about the path of justice. Put them back into their cells and make them try something else! Anything but… Just letting them free! Think about the sort of corruption they’re already feeding into the innocent public!”
