Hey, remember like 10 years ago when many of us were in our teens and twenties? Remember how there were all those news articles making fun of “millennials and their avocado toast,” that they didn’t know certain skills that had stopped being taught in school, that they were ruining the economy by killing various industries?

Remember how we rightfully said that was bullshit and we would be the generation to end it, that we would be nice to the generation after us?

I’ve seen a couple posts shitting on gen alpha kids. Don’t do that. Remember that they’ve already been through climate disasters, political unrest, and a global pandemic in their young lives. Talk to them. If they’re being rude, it’s probably because they’re struggling, not because they’re evil. Treat them as we wanted to be treated when we were their age. Children are people.

say what you want about gen alpha and what you say is probably true, but they’re trying man. My next door neighbour’s oldest boy wants to be outside all the time. he’ll come outside just to watch me cut the grass in my backyard because his house is a duplex that took up the whole lot so he doesn’t have one. we’re six blocks from the nearest “park” (if you can call it that) and he’s eight years old, he can’t go alone and both his parents work full time to pay for the house that is too big for the lot but still too small for the family. My roommates and I spent extra time outside this summer teaching him and his younger siblings to play beanbag toss or frisbee or whatever because he literally doesn’t have room in his backyard to do those things. We only have the space because our house is the only one on the block that wasn’t demolished, turned into a duplex, and sold for 3x it’s worth. He starts every my sentence with “So guess what?” because he’s so excited to have someone listen to him talk. He can’t play street hockey or basket ball in his drive way because he doesn’t have one of those either. And our street is on a slope, at the bottom of that slope is a main road with heavy traffic, so even tho cars barely drive down our street, he and his friends still can’t play basket ball or road hockey in the street because the ball or puck is gonna roll down the slope and onto the main road. it would be a disaster waiting to happen. His parents are tying too, but there’s only so much you can do when both you and your partner work full time, but it still isn’t enough to get out of the city so your kid has room to run. They limit tv time, they don’t allow their kids to watch youtube at ALL. They got their kids a cat. They got their kids bikes that they ride to the park when they’re able to supervise. It’s maximum effort with so little reward because no matter how much stuff you have it’s can’t make up for the lack of time and space. Kids NEED time and space and the demands of capitalism make it impossible for parents to give that to their children.

The Gen Z version of "not like other girls" - and as someone who's Gen Z with Gen Alpha siblings, I can confirm it's carried over to Gen Alpha - is to be a tradwife conservative. "I'm not like other girls, who are filthy whores who'll end up alone due to their slutty ways. I don't want a job, I want to wear sundresses and bake and make my husband dinner. Feminism is evil because my strawman idea of feminism is that they want us all to work, even though half my comments section is people pointing out that feminism is the right to choose." Etc, etc.

I have seen multiple fics now with Reader x Canon Character romances with this type of protagonist.

I would greatly prefer we go back to the "Dark Ages" people describe to me of Mary Sues than this. People older than me assure me that it was awful, there were these overpowered women characters who had no flaws and kicked way too much ass and there was no tension and no stakes, etc. But the thing about the polar opposite is that I read women who only go to church, journal, weep when kidnapped by the villain, wear cottagecore pinterest style clothing (which is admittedly nice looking in theory, but often poorly described in fic) and make food for Captain America so he can sweep them off their feet to live their 1950's housewife ideal and I'm not offended, I'm so incredibly bored. I'm sorry, I really worry this is coming across as me crapping on women who want to be housewives, and I truly think that if that makes you happy and you can sustain that lifestyle you should totally go for it. Chase your dreams!

But not everyone's dreams make for a compelling story, especially when you're spending the entirety of the story bashing sluts and whores and girls who "clearly hate being girls" aka aren't wearing dresses and skirts all the time. If your dream involves tearing down other women, it's not really something I can get behind. My dream scenarios usually involve people leaving each other alone re: clothing and employment choices. When I say I want conflict in fic, I meant between characters, not the self-insert and strawmen (strawwomen, I guess?) feminists.

Apparently "I'm not like other girls" used to mean tomboys. Can we go back to that, at least in fanfic? That sounds a lot less grating than this "women belong in the home" stuff.

School thought taking away our phones

When all it’s teaching us

Is how addicted we are,

We have constant stimulation

We are getting mad at kids for being on a phone

In ten years

People who grew up with technology 

Are going to end up with something like PTSD

Because we can’t let go of it

It’s better than talking to a real person

And acting like we’re okay,

We’d rather sit behind a screen

We want to escape,

We want to tear our veins out,

I genuinely hate generational politics. We should be knocking down billionaire's doors not making fun of how each other dresses, what kind of slang each other uses or how cringy each other are.

Like we all live in our societies as they are and that means we adapt to the things around us and things are hard right now. No, not all millennials are bad parents, not all boomers are rude Karen's, not all gen x are maga Republicans and no not all gen alpha are stupid iPad babies.

Like, yes those mean stereotypes exist for a reason but the reason is we have bad infrastructure in literally every possible category of living.

Instead of getting mad at the parent who doesn't know how to deal with their child lets address how much people have to work now in order to keep up with bills and thus don't have the ability to spend more time with their kids, let alone learn how to care for them.

Do you all realize how low the baseline of mental health is on an average? Pretty low. Therapy is still a pretty taboo topic for most people and is only growing worse with how often shootings happen now.

Gen z and gen alpha get blamed for being stupid or lazy but like- I get it??? If I hadn't had the short freedom from technology in the 90s and early 2000s I probably also would be much worse in school and socially. But that's not their fault and also we are living through war times and have literally no where to socialize.

Our world is designed to do everything it's doing and to hurt and prod and poke from everyone it's poking at and it's ridiculous to fall into the trap of blaming someone ahead of us in the race when we all know the real culprit.

It's not the other poor people or the other uneducated or the other mentality Ill or- it's the fucking wealthy. It always has been. For fucking time immortal it has always been the wealthy.

It's class politics that the average people need to focus on. Age politics is how they get us to fight each other instead.

GMMTV's Gen 2 problem

I am not impressed that GMMTV just commenced representation of BounPrem. Why? Because their priorities recently have looked a lot like this:

Gen 2 (or maybe stylized Gen Z? still thinking of a name for them...)

Pillars & Pillar-adjacents

Personalities (think Godji, Nicky, Jennie)

LYKN

Girls & Basement dwellers

Rookies

And I hate it.

IMO, Gen 2 is far too overexposed for the sheer lack of talent in their group. I mean out of all of them they only have, who? Fourth? JimmySea on a good day? And honestly, Gen 3 is already starting to debut in roles but they don't seem to get content that'll be widely received. And a lot of the potentially interesting stories (that inevitably get ruined by poor direction/writing) are being funneled to Gen 2 instead of elsewhere, where they belong... I don't mind JimmySea (and to a lesser extent GemFourth) getting good stuff but stop just allowing PondPhuwin, ForceBook, and JoongDunk to do whatever tf they want and start giving Gen 3 & basement dwellers something to do!

Pillars and pillar-adjacents are doing everything I want them to do (OffGun never unemployed, TayNew remarried, KristSingto look to be on the horizon). I mean, we do need to have a serious conversation about letting OffGun take a very long break...but that's a conversation for another time. Plus, GMMTV has turned around and given EarthMix a Japanese remake when they know they've been having problems with Japanese distributors...seems dumb to me.

The personalities will always be employed and, honestly, I rarely watch their content unless my faves are guesting. I like Jennie in a lot of the stuff she's been in. Plus, I feel like their content doesn't require too many resources, so I don't think it's a huge concern to have the personalities continue to stay booked.

But where things get interesting to me is how GMMTV seems to be pouring a lot into making Project Alpha guys into actors... Like P'Tha if you don't let those boys be tpop idols and stop shoving every remotely soft looking boy into a ship!! Nothing is worse than an "actor" who really wants to be a singer istg!!

And this leads me to another issue I have and that is how only like 5 out of: Mook, View, June, Jan, Ciize, Tu, Neen, Namtan, Pod, Thor, AJ, JJ, Luke, Sing, Pluem, Joss, etc., can get work at a time. Like I know they do het and ensemble stuff at times but it really feels like they don't get the stuff with the juicy marketing budgets.

Then there's the poor rookies. And I'm not talking new to the company like Sky and Inn. I'm talking about the ones who've been signed for at least a year now and only have, at most, support roles under their belts. These are the Javas and Indys of the world. Sometimes I forget they're even represented by GMMTV the way they haven't had a chance to showcase any talent.

And then there's all the new male talent who rightfully got lead roles basically immediately. Sky's in a homoerotic het drama with Nani. Inn and Great are practically having sex onscreen by GMMTV standards. Perth was basically assigned to a ship before he even signed with GMMTV... I have a feeling these guys will continue to get more and more roles thrown at them based on the success of their previous dramas, their acting skills, and the hype for their current/future ones dramas.

All this makes me wonder where on earth former Wabi Sabi artists fit in? As for Santa, I don't think we'll have to worry about him because I have a feeling he'll either be a basement dweller, get mostly het roles, or be paired with a LYKN member so he can finally breathe the same air as a functioning idol. Same with Yacht--except he'll almost certainly be sent to the basement for not having the GMMTV vibe (I'll explain on another post). But if GMMTV wants to cast BounPrem together, I feel like they'd have to carve out a space for them that they'd usually give to FirstKhao and pillar-adjacents like EarthMix. Maybe GMMTV can do that but it just doesn't seem like their bandwidth his large enough, nor their story selection good enough to do right by BounPrem. I hope I'm wrong but that would require GMMTV to care more about all of their artists rather than just Gen 2.

someone else posted about jenny park being the next IT girl. honestly this shit is ridiculous. idk who that girl is but why oh why does korea push the y2k IT girl type thing its like trying to make "fetch" happen and it doesnt happen? if u know what i mean. overall kpop is becoming very cringe worthy like its a buncha gen z and alphas trying to be IT boys and girls. i cannot relate to it anymore. its a shame its about how idols look or dress than it is about actual music and actual music is pushed onto tiktok which again is mainly for younger gens. i keep trying to find some type of entertainment these days but its so generically bad or something that would give me a lot of second hand embarassement. sure theres still songs and some groups i like but not enough to be so immersed into it anymore. i feel that korea is taking it too far and esp with the way wonyoung is both hated and admired for simply being a "giant baby" tf is wrong with society nowadays? imho its also why idols act so bizare on camera.

Yeah, I've not been feeling K-pop for a while now. The music is okay (imo new jeans are saving 5th gen), but overall I find better music in the underground korean scene and in America's indie scene as well. Honestly, they just need new producers and to stop fixating on just looks (A perfect example is Sullyoon, she is one of most gorgeous idols and ppl consider her an IT girl but her groups music is beyond trash)

I notice a lot of K-pop fans hate on Western music, but at least there's a focus on music/creativity and not just vanity

Okay, sorry for more. But you know, it is funny to me how older gens say that millennials (and zoomers too bc they don’t seem to know the difference and tbh neither do we half the time apparently*) are perpetually stunted adult children or whatever when it feels like we’re the first generations to be more aware of how generational trauma has affected our entire families and are intentionally more careful with our decisions about marriage/children/dealing with our own trauma/etc. I don’t want to paint every generation or person with a brush, but idk. Like. I grew up with Gen X parents who got married and had me young and had literally no emotional regulation/would tantrum at the smallest things (which…they’ve gotten better about), yet they would go on and on about the entitlement of my generation and everything. I feel like I have more empathy for older gens with less choices (especially for the women and minorities of those gens), but I still don’t really get how people just kind of walked through life not giving certain things any thought. Like people who would beat their children and think nothing of it or blindly adhered to beauty standards that made no sense or felt like requirements to exist. I know societal pressure sucks but. I also don’t get it, and I do think that in some ways we are more easily able to question disparities now.

On another note, I hate online warring stuff between Gen Z and Millenials (literally never experienced it irl). Apart from my own generation, I feel like Gen Z is the only other generation I feel understands me in a similar way because we both grew up as “digital natives” or whatever the term is, but also feels like we both had a balance with more regular life stuff too before being online 24/7 became completely inescapable. Idk I feel like there is more shared there and they get it if I talk about x thing vs trying to talk about x thing to the generations who didn’t grow up online lol. There are more overlapping touchpoints and interests. Not to sound like old man, but I do wonder what it’s going to be like for Gen Alpha as they get older. It sounds like kids in schools have a much harder time now with attention spans and behavior and I wonder if there will be a kind of pendulum swing when they get older that makes them want to pull back from being exposed to so much technology or if it will just keep going like it has been. It’s weird. And I know in practice kids and teens really are kind of always kids and teens, but can we deny that having tech everywhere hasn’t changed things somehow? Idk.

Anyway. Going to be an interesting day someday when all of the people who lived their lives pre-widespread Internet are no longer around and the rest of us are ancient relics of the past reminiscing about neopets or spotify wrapped or whatever lol.

*I kind of made this remark bc going back to work I realized that to a certain point I can’t tell ages well at all, and neither can my coworkers, apparently. I work with lot of people ages 23-45 and the people I thought were closer to my age tended to be mid-twenties and then three different times those same people thought I was 24-25 (which I’m not trying to humble brag about bc idc and there’s nothing wrong with getting older, but I think it’s more that I just sound and act in a way people don’t usually expect or something and less that I look younger or whatever. Maybe it’s also bc a lot of us spend a lot more time inside or wearing more sunscreen or. Idk man. I’ve heard people are showing fewer signs of “premature aging” bc of things like that. Put that in quotes bc again, aging is fine and normal). Then there is a lady in her late 40s I thought was early thirties bc she just came off as youthful or something. When someone told me she was almost 50 I was like huh wuh. So. Just saying I do get why people don’t know the difference lmao.
