I love the whole “their clothes are made out of Kevlar” thing because

1 that did so much for Weiss, clover, penny, and any other character that’s ever been stabbed, seriously the kevlar theyre buying has to be cheap

2 even IF it was Kevlar, the second most of the female characters in rwby get stabbed/shot on the chest it’s over for them

Like, Kevlar isn’t a magic shield, it still has to cover something to protect it

Yep, it's a defense that works on zero levels. Like not only is it (as far as I know) a headcanon with absolutely no canonical backing, it also does not make sense for Kevlar as we understand it to be super tight and form fitting. And not only is Kevlar as we know it not going to be effective against anything but bullets, but we don't even have the excuse of it being 'actually super special in-universe Kevlar that's works on more stuff' because we've seen spears and claws and arrows go right through the clothes hunter characters wore. And not only does Kevlar only work when it's actually covering the body whereas tons of female characters are designed with skin exposed even in areas that would crucially need protection like the stomach and chest, but it STILL doesn't matter at all ANYWAY, because the clear difference between how the majority of men in the show are designed versus how the majority of women are designed is STILL a problem.

IF we ignore canon and the logical conclusions that come from knowing the misogynistic fratboy like behavior of the early creators/writers of RWBY, and turn our brains off enough to pretend that Yang's short-shorts and low-cut croptop is actually some super magical kind of Remnant Kevlar that manages to grant her a full body extra shield against weapons... It STILL begs the question of why the writers chose to design men and women so differently- not just in regards to clothes, but also in regards to muscle-growth, and also in regards to how age is shown in male characters more than female characters (who tend to be designed to look just like the teenage girls.) Saying 'well the reason so many girls can wear short skirts and have boob windows is that their outfits are kevlar' doesn't mean anything when the real question is actually 'why are the majority of the female characters dressed in impractical or revealing clothes whereas the majority of men AREN'T?'

The Kevlar thing (which by the way, I have no idea who said it, it was just something I saw my friends talk about and share pics of) is just another excuse that doesn't actually work.

Ive made through chapters 4-7 today and good god, I feel like i had basically nothing to say about acotar as I was reading it but with this book theres so much to talk about for some reason, its wild. Truly, I did not realize how much I liked Feyre in the first book until I was under threat of losing her

Now, I will say that Feyre seems in-character so far, shes still the same woman but traumatized, but I am worried for her. Tamlin is a whole different story though, SJM might as well shoot him dead right in front of me for how thoroughly hes being character assassinated. Like, if Tamlin actually cares about Feyre as a person and not just in a douchy, possessive alphahole way, which he should because Tamlin was not that kind of guy previously, then he would force Feyre to train so she can defend herself if necessary, not forbid her from it. Even if he didnt want her to use her magical powers, surely he would make her practice with her knife or with a sword or even with her bow just to be safe, because hes not always gonna be there

I think his actions do continue to make sense if you look at them from his perspective, but I also maintain that he's doing a really bad job at responding to Feyre. But also, its so laughably obvious what sjm is doing by having Tamlin say shit like "you were stolen from me", shes trying to paint him as some objectifying asshole. Even Lucien calling her "Tamlin's bride" feels like its part of all this, and I know Ianthe is gonna turn out to be a traitor and a rapist at some point, so it really comes across as an attempt to villify the entire spring court for its association with Tamlin

Speaking of Lucien, I genuinely think part of the reason Feylin is doing so badly in this book is that his dynamic with Tamlin is completely different now. For some reason hes all like "oh, my High Lord" instead of "my good friend Tamlin", he suddenly cant say a word against him when he was talking to shit to him just a few months ago in-uinverse. Like, if their dynamic was the same as it was in acotar, Lucien wouldve probably been like "hey man, I know youre stressed and I get it, I know what its like to watch the love of my life get brutally murdered I dont know what its like to have her magically ressurected again but thats neither here nor there, but Feyre is clearly not happy being inside all day and you need a break, go take her out on a date in the woods, I'll stay here and take care of everything, dont even worry about it" or gotten him to comprise with Feyre or chill tf out or SOMETHING but because theres suddenly this rigid hierarchy in the spring court in order to make the night court look better

Speaking of the night court, Ive heard some stuff about it feeling very orientalist but it still managed to completely blindsight me with its badness. Feyre got fucking harem pants to wear, really? And a short-sleeved croptop, and no fucking shoes, probably because Rhys didnt want Feyre throwing shoes at him again. That was the one moment in this book that brought me genuine joy btw, I would read a thousand fanfics about her just throwing shit at him

Anyway, speaking of my guy (derogatory) Rhysand Nolastname, hes so incredibly annoying I dont even have any coherent thoughts about him right now, like, if I were to write down what I think of him I would just write "he fuckinh pisses me off" over and over again. Im actually a really big fan of edgy shadow bois, but only if theyre like, sad and angry and closed off, if theyre like Rhysand and theyre all flirty and teasing and cocky and shit, theyre just annoying and nothing else. And the romance has barely even started yet, I cant imagine how much worse the flirting is gonna get later. Not to mention all these desperate and obvious attempts by sjm to make him sympathetic and morally good now, its honestly pretty pathetic

Now Im gonna be real with you, I didnt get a lot of sleep yesterday and I can feel myself and the things Im writing getting less and less coherent, so Im just gonna hit you with the very last of my thoughts bullet point style

The fact that Amarantha apparently didnt actually go rogue and it was all part of Hybern's plan feels misogynistic ngl

Ianthe's entire character already feels so misogynistic and slutshame-y and she hasnt even assaulted anyone yet

Something about Mor bothers me, I cant quite put my finger on it but its there. I think I do like her for annoying Rhys though

Between a fem Near and Fem mello who would be more popular?

Hmm idk if you meant in fandom or in canon but-!

I think fandom-wise a fem!Mello would probably be more popular, especially with a more western audience. People tend to like hot, fiery bombshell blondes (most) of the time + i think a fem!mello would have the sensual appeal that misa does. It would definitely be appealing to see more of a tough girl- especially because the other female characters are only really there to be used as pawns in light's game (aside from lidner and naomi- who did end up being tricked by him but damn if she didnt give him a time of it), and i think people would like the "take no shit" attitude. ... but it depends tho bc fandom is largely populated by a very particular annoying type of ("dudebro") fan, the type that hates female characters that are TOO loud or aggressive, the way Mello is. I find that a lot of male fans like Mello for his agression and more (stereotypically) masculine attitude (though mello is VERY queer with his croptops and leather and long hair), as well as being somewhat of an underdog- i have a feeling the same fans are the ones who'd despise the very same traits in a female counterpart.

Near would be split into three receptions. 1) hated even more feverishly- near was NOT generally liked by the fandom back then- i didnt get into DN until about... 2015-ish? But even then you could tell from the fics and fan reception more from the time that people did NOT like Near at all, and it was rare to find someone that did. I largely suspect this is because he's just very misunderstood- like being seen as emotionless/uncaring when he's just guarded, seen as cocky when hes just confident, seen as 'getting lucky' rather than credit being given to his intelligence. This would be a LOT worse if he was a girl- just look at Misa. Whilst yes, the series does unfortunately downplay her intelligence a lot and turns her into pretty much comedic relief for most of the last third, there are times you can see just how smart and calculating she can be also- that are frequently ignored because shes. Well. A girl. Same would go for fem!near- absolutely everything would be an asspull, people would hate her for being "the worse, girl version of L", and people would respond more negatively because if they already hated near for beating light to begin with, theyd hate even more for a GIRL to do it. 2) the people who'd like fem!near for the appeal of a cute female character- some fans just like cute anime girls and... tbh valid. Some people like characters less when theyre girls, some like them more! I do think early receptions to near might have been more positive if there was that moe factor (and yes near is moe as a boy too but yknow what i mean). She'd definitely be a cute waifu to a lot of people. 3) the people who like near pretty much the same, just that near is a girl now. Id definitely have found a fem!near interesting- the underdog aspect would have been even moreso, and id have loved to not only see light get his ass handed to him by a girl, but a female character who actually got the writing they deserved? Yes please!

I think both characters would be more well recieved now, the way their male counterparts are- especially near, who's much more well liked by this generation of fans than the previous one. I think people would pay them more attention, bc holy shit strong female characters who are morally grey (mello) and very neurodivergent-leaning (near but tbh mello too).

Now IN CANON i think things would be v interesting

Near might have a slightly more difficult time with her team and presenting a case- not the SPK, i genuinely dont think they'd have a problem being lead by a female lead, but i think near would definitely have a lot more problems (from external sources) in general when it came to being in an authoritative role, and would definitely see a lot more pushback when it came to decisions. So she'd let NO ONE outside the team think she was female- as far as everyone would be aware, 'N' would be a man, and the voice filters would reflect that, maybe even purposefully pitched down a little. Of course, Near is canonically voiced by a female VA anyway, so its not like her voice would change, just that she'd be more conscious of it. She'd also be aware that she could use that to her advantage, knowing Kira wouldn't be looking for a woman. This would continue when she succeeded L. As far as everyone would be aware, L would be a man- and this would benefit her greatly on field missions (if there ever were anyway), with people (if ever suspicious) assuming she'd be L's secretary at most.

Mello would definitely definitely use his- or, rather, her looks to her advantage. I think it would be a lot harder for her to climb the rungs of the mafia though, and she'd probably have to work a lot harder and rely a bit more on charming her way up than earning respect the way a man would. Still posing a threat, dont get me wrong, but she wouldn't be stupid to think that she'd ever earn the same level of respect as a man would (i mean its the mafia lets be real here idk much about the criminal underworld but i think its fair to say it's male-dominated and probably quite misogynistic). That probably makes it easier for her to gather intel on potential traitors and targets, though. But mello was never the head so much as a right hand man (at least to my knowledge feel free to correct me if im wrong), so that's probably a more palatable position to the other mafia members than if she had her eyes on the top.

Fuck my overthinking mind, that mindset only lasted half a day, i would love him either way, i WILL love him either way, he will be so happy and look cute and be comfy with himself and theres nothing that I like more about him that when he is in his element and being himself unapologetically. You were pretty well known on both Twitter and by Jack's fans. You had made appearances in more than a few streams of his and they enjoyed having you around. Typically you would join in for a few minutes here or there on one of his streams but today, the two of you were streaming together.

Jack had set up for a You Laugh You Lose stream and was waiting on you. Once you had joined him in his streaming room, he started the stream.

Things took a minute to get going but soon enough there was a steady rhythm. The videos were ok but nothing too funny or memorable, which was a tad disappointing.

“You guys gotta step up your game, I’m getting old just sitting here.” Chat wanted to make Jack eat his words, but a lot of their videos were getting blocked by the mods.

Though it was quickly that the mods had come up with an idea. There had only been a small handful but occasionally someone would send in an edit using pictures from your Instagram. All of the edits were designed to be thirst traps, making them the perfect weapon to use against Jack.

Putting their evil plan into action, the mods let one video through, then another one, and another one. They didn’t want to do too many as they knew it could take away from the stream so they only allowed three, that they deemed appropriate enough, to be let through.

Jack was nearly drooling, it wasn’t that he hadn’t seen these photos before, hell he had taken half of them, it was how they were edited. There was nothing done to alter your appearance, only music, and added effects.

It was enough to have his jaw hitting the floor though, which you found hilarious. If it wasn’t for you gently lifting his jaw back into place you fear he would’ve been stuck like that forever, which would be horrifying, to say the least.

“You alright there bud?” Jack blinked a few times, pulling himself back into the moment.

“Yeah, I’m uh, I’m good.” You laughed as Jack just sat there, thinking about what he had seen.

“You act like you’ve never seen those photos before when you’ve helped me take like half of them.”

“I know, but something about that video just- I don’t even know.” Jack shook his head, trying to shake the shock from his mind. He would’ve been successful in the act if it wasn’t for you leaning over and giving him a big kiss on the cheek.

“Huh?”

“Love you.” You smiled as Jack’s face flushed red from the bottom up.

“I love you too. Can we just focus on the stream now?”
