Interesting how...
Buck met Tommy through an unsanctioned, somewhat questionable work decision...
Tumblr media
...Because Tommy is an LAFD pilot, a job similar and connected to Buck's, but it's not exactly the same.
Tumblr media
Tommy is significantly older than Buck.
Tumblr media
They had a disastrous first date because Buck was so nervous and in his head about it. (source: the ringer.com)
Tumblr media
Tommy is showing Buck a new kind of relationship that he's never had before, despite a subconscious desire for it, allowing him to grow.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Buck is completely smitten, putting his all into the relationship, evidenced by him not being able to stop thinking about Tommy, and already asking him to be his date to Maddie's wedding.
Tumblr media
....I think I've seen this film before, and I didn't like the ending.

Buck & Eddie: They don’t suck at dating when they date each other
Tumblr media
I wrote a 6x18 “Pay it Forward” Coda fanfic (linked here) based on the comment Buck made to Eddie while they were in the fire engine in 6x17 “Love is in the Air” regarding Eddie sucking at dating and I decided to expound on it in a blog post.
Tumblr media
The truth is neither of them suck at dating when they date each other and that may have been the point the show was attempting to convey to the audience when Buck told Eddie, “So that’s what it is... you suck at it” followed by Chimney agreeing with him.  Did most of the GA pick up on it?  Probably not but the truth is both of them suck at dating but only when they try to date other people.
Eddie
In CANON Eddie’s only dated two women, well he was married to SD and he dated AF but that’s not the point. The audience learned in 6x17 Eddie met SD when he was in the 8th grade, they lost touch but they reconnected when they were in the 12th grade and after he got her pregnant (either sometime right before their high school graduation or shortly after) they got married and started an instant family.  Therefore, it’s safe to say if they did date it wasn’t anything like the type of dates he would have gone on as an adult because they were teenagers when they became spouses and parents.
When he dated AF, they had two actual dates, i.e., the breakfast date in 4x6 “Jinx” and their creepy math date in 4x8 “Breaking Point”. They weren’t shown going on any other dates in CANON because their trip to the suit store and the ambulance ride to the hospital in 5x1 “Panic” don’t count as dates.
Tumblr media
Therefore, even though Eddie’s a bit inexperienced, he DID NOT SUCK at dating when he took Buck to play poker in 6x13 “Mixed Feelings” and he didn’t have any performance anxiety issues while they were together.
Buck
Even though Buck has dated more women than Eddie, based on his CANON dates, it appears he sucks at dating too.  In season 1, every time he took AC on a date it ended in disaster.  When they went to a nice restaurant for Valentine’s Day she ended up having to give him a tracheotomy because he choked on a piece of bread.  He also tried to take her on a hot air balloon ride but they didn’t get to do it because she had to leave to deal with her mother.
The hookups he had with TK in 2x8 “Buck Actually” don’t count as dates because they didn’t go anywhere.  He went to the bar to meet Chimney and TK bought him a drink before they ended up in the restroom together.  Also, them almost hooking up in the news van was not a date.  He met AM for coffee at the end of 2x8 after she asked him out but all they were shown doing was talking while they sat in a coffee shop or whatever.
He met Veronica for a dinner date in 4x7 “There Goes the Neighborhood” but it ended up being a disaster.  When he invited TK to join him, Veronica and Albert for dinner in 4x8, it wasn’t a date because he invited her there so he wouldn’t have to face Veronica and Albert alone.  Once he officially started dating TK, all they did was spend a whole year during season 5 entombed in his loft and they weren’t shown going out to any restaurants or to the movies.  His trip to Oklahoma to surprise her doesn’t count because visiting a prison isn’t a date, right?  The one time they had a “successful” lunch date was in 4x11 “First Responders” but they were just friends and he invitied her there to ask her for a favor.
Finally, him and ND met for coffee in 6x15 “Death and Taxes” but they weren’t dating   She asked him out so she could learn more about the lightning strike and his death.  He called her and they went on two dates in 6x17 but they both got interrupted when LD showed up at the bar and TK and Kameron interrupted their second date while they were at his loft.
Tumblr media
But when Buck went to play poker with Eddie in 6x13, he had a great time and there weren’t any mishaps. Their date didn’t suck because as usual they couldn’t keep their eyes off each other and even though they were playing a low stakes game of poker, they were practically pressed against each other while the other players sat with at least one chair’s length of space between them.
Tumblr media
The point of this post is Buck and Eddie only suck at dating when they try to date other people but they don’t suck at it when they date each other.
In CANON, their poker date was the best date either of them ever had.

My mom’s opinions on 911 so far:
• Loves loves loves Bobby and thinks his storyline is actually so heartbreaking
• hates Michael so much and thinks everything from the way he handled the divorce to the way he threw a temper tantrum at Bobby and said he’s no one’s dad was all asshole behaviour
• hated Shannon but was okay with her coming back and thought it would be good for the diazes before that dinner scene where she was like asking for a divorce, she hated Shannon for leaving and cutting all contact with her kid for two years and also she hated that the way she acted about Christopher’s CP (in regard to her acting like it’s this big regret of hers and like it was partly why she left)
• she loves Jennifer love Hewitt already but she also totally agreed with her making madney happen instead of Maddie and Eddie and was glad they went with that route instead
• I’d say the episode she most got into so far was Maddie and Doug episode, heist episode and the first episode
• she hated buck and Abby together and was grossed out by the age difference (when Bobby met Abby she was like THEYRE MORE SIMILAR IN AGE AND COULD BE A COUPLE THE WAITER AT BUCK AND ABBYS DATE PROBABLY THOUGHT SHE WAS HIS MOM)
•she liked the detail of Chris forgetting how many surgeries he’s had cos she was like that was so perfectly written for a kid character
• she hated the hen cheating storyline
Also side note but she keeps predicting stuff correctly which is honestly so slay🫡

I started to rewatch s1 and I forgot how much I hated Abby. She's kinda stalkerish (getting Buck's number from a report???? Maddie got in trouble for trying to help a caller) and is only using Buck to feel good about herself.
I'd choose Taylor a hundred times over her if we're talking about love interests

I wanted to finish at least one of my oldest WIPs, and luckily, the anti-Abby vibes were strong tonight, so here y'all go:
SUMMARY: After the train derailment, Abby wants to mend fences with Buck, so she invites him out to lunch. Eddie, naturally, doesn't trust her, and decides to go with Buck to officially meet Abby (and give her a piece of his mind). What could go wrong?
EXCERPT: Buck, of course, knows what he’s doing immediately. “Eddie,” Buck groans as Eddie climbs into the jeep. “Hey, I said I would play nice,” Eddie says, buckling his seatbelt. “I’m playing nice.” “You’re… is that my cologne?” Buck asks, pulling out into the street. “How is this playing nice?” “Well, I could’ve gone with the T-shirt that says 'You hurt my best friend, fuck you',” Eddie replies sarcastically, and Buck laughs.

I saw a post the other day about someone being pissed that people were calling Eddie gay instead of bi only because they couldn't handle more than one bisexual person on a show. Now, I didn't make Eddie gay/demi, he was born that way, BUT it got me thinking, because the whole crew feels very fruity? SO, I want to get your guys' opinions on what you think the rest of the characters are. (JUST the characters. We're not speculating on the actors. We all know this.) I'm going to put mine below & I'd love to hear everyone else's thoughts :) These are by vibes only. As a definite demisexual and probable bi woman, idk how great my gaydar is, but sexuality is a spectrum & straight isn't the default, so let's go!!
Bobby - 0% fruity. That is a straight, middle aged white man (affectionate) if I've ever seen one.
Athena - Also straight.
Chim - Chim feels very straight to me, but that scene with the bachelor had me peering at him a little closer, because I've never watched the Bachelor, but it looked like Joey (I think that was the bachelor's name, right? I've never watched a single episode of that show so I have no idea) had been around before, so I couldn't tell if he was like, starstruck, or "Wow that's a pretty boy and it's making me feel things" -struck 😂
Maddie - I don't get many vibes from her either, but I also have a vague fic idea of Madney breaking up in s4/s5 and her ending up with Shannon instead, so idk, maybe she's just unlabeled but somewhere on the spectrum of queerness?
Shannon - Bi vibes
Taylor Kelly - 100% bi, I refuse to hear any other argument.
Lucy Donato - This is a pansexual woman if I've ever seen one, you cannot convince me otherwise. (Also, the most interesting AND likable of Buck's female LI's, argue with the wall. Lucy, they'll never make me hate you bby 🩷💛💙.)
Lena Bokso - Lesbian vibes, for sure. I don't think there was ANY romantic undertones with her and Eddie (Which, I'm not saying that's the only reason I think she's a lesbian. She can like men and not like Eddie. Even if she did, Eddie wasn't in a place to do anything with those feelings, but I saw a post about that pairing recently & wanted to throw my 2 cents in)
May Grant - May also gives off queer vibes, and I've seen other view her as full wlw, but I think she gives off more bi/pan vibes?
Ravi - This man is soommmeee kind of queer that I just cannot put my finger on. I've seen him HC'd as gay, pan, & ace in some way, and I can honestly rock w/ any of the 3 of them. All I know is that he is not a straight man lol.
Albert - Also unsure about him, but if someone were to tell me that he was bi, I could definitely see it. I think that's influenced by the fic that had him, Ravi & May in a throuple, which was genuinely so cute.
Ana - Dr. Flores doesn't give off queer vibes for me, but that could be bc she was criminally underdeveloped & we know practically nothing about her.
Natalia - See above ^^
Ali Martin - Same ^^ although I could see her just being queer and not being more specific than that. Maybe she's straight, who knows. I literally forgot about her until I was looking up actor/actress names 😂
M*risol - straight & homophobic lmfao
Abby - Literally could not care less about her, but I wanted to include her so I could talk about her possibly being Tommy Kinard's ex-girlfriend and her coming back to LA for whatever reason and finding her ex-boyfriends happy & having totally forgotten about her predatory ass.
Also, obviously not speculating about any of the children, bc they're still children, even if they're fictional. It's icky.
I think that's all the main/reoccurring characters that we don't already know about, let me know if I missed any.
Talk about being the gay firefighter show, how accurate lmfao.

Thank you for your tags of ‘imagine if she was a man and Buck was a woman’. Most people would not have the same view of it I can bet money. Buck was in his mid 20s and she was what late 40s early 50s I cant recall? I’m not being ageist date who you want as long as it’s legal and consenting but as you pointed out it’s just very very strange and uncomfortable how they even got together and how she started talking to him. If Buck was a 25/26 year old woman and Abby was a 40 something/50 something year old man who got Buck’s info the way Abby did in the show and reached out how she did, I believe most people would be so creeped out. But it’s glossed over most of the time
omg right?? like let's be honest, she looked for his number in the first place bc she recognized his voice when he was on TV and she saw a young hot guy. and i agree, date whoever you want as long as you're both consenting adults but the way that situation started and how it was handled it's creepy and it feels wrong to me. also the fact that abby being the "responsible adult" ghosted buck and never bothered to apologize, like???? if she was a man and buck a girl??? abby would be THE MOST hated character, i just know it.

i don't understand why t100 s5 is so unpopular in fandom because imo it was easily the best written season of the entire series??? i mean
everyone's six year glowup was fantastic. all the characters looked really attractive. clarke, kabby (their whole aging gray hair thing was hot even if they became totally unbearable hypocrites), octavia, diyoza and mccreary, spacekru... also BELLAMY'S BEARD???? hello that was awesome he truly leaned into his Cheer Dad personality
becho was one of the sweetest and healthiest relationships. lack of flashback/spacekru centric ep aside (my only complaint about s5 tbh), they got through their past differences together, in an environment where they weren't in any significant danger or participated in opposite sides of a war (which lbr was the only reason their dynamic was "unhealthy" in the first place), and they were able to prioritize their mental health and become real friends who shared things about themselves
bloodreina and diyoza were the best villains ever??? their ice cold bad bitches personalities were so fascinating to watch onscreen. i get that octavia is unpopular because of her treatment of bell in s5 but as a character she totally POPPED (also wonkru's whole blood cult thing and eligius being full of sociopathic war criminals was great entertainment material, and part of what made my s5 watching experience so enjoyable)
spacekru slowly becoming fond of each other and transitioning into a found family over their six years together offscreen was amazing. their affection and loyalty towards each other was so heartwarming, they never cared about the war, or eligius vs octavia, only being reunited and spending time in each other's company. plus the group's banter/chemistry, the memori breakup + resulting angst/raven & emori friendship, bellamy being murphy's Big Brother/bullying murphy into recognizing his self worth/respecting and valuing murphy's input to the discussion (just murphamy's developed friendship in general), marper being involved in the memori breakup because they care about their friends' happiness, the echo/monty hug and echo/murphy friendship, emori comforting echo, bellamy refusing to leave raven behind, were also total highlights of the season
k*bby betraying octavia immediately when given the chance and leaving her to deal with the consequences of the cannibalistic blood cult, abby torturing raven (a girl she dared to call "daughter) for the sake of an addiction she couldn't control....... they finally revealed their true colors and it was glorious (and kinda sad because i could not stand them as characters anymore, although at least they remained consistent in their hypocrisy)
cl*rke torturing her own friends to "protect" the daughter she placed a shock collar on (and being called out by the narrative for it/not being handed blanket forgiveness) was absolutely amazing
mccreary and abby/diyoza (even kane) had ridiculous amounts of sexual tension, it was absurdly hot
i love vincent, that cannibalist freak. he's like a feral rabid pet and it was adorable (also he put kane's life in danger which was hilarious, in the sense that it served as abby's punishment)
the aesthetic appeal of wonkru and their hunger games style feeding ritual, octavia's tyranny, it was positively fucked up :D i also loved echo's arc as a "spy," subverting her inital role in the series (something that brought her so much vitriol from fandom) and using it for a positive purpose
it was horrifying and gruesome and violent which automatically gives it five stars in my book 😌

So, since my previous analysis of Buck and physical affection excluded canon romantic relationships, I decided to make one focusing on Abby.
As discussed here and here, Buck isn't someone who typically initiates physical affection with those around him. He waits for permission and doesn't ask for physical comfort, only accepting what others offer him instead.
Considering he and Abby were in a romantic relationship, there might be some shift in his approach to physical affection, right? Not really.
Abby was a key turning point for Buck. He didn't want to be "Buck 1.0" and immediately jump into bed with her. He established boundaries - limiting contact to phone calls - and their relationship developed at a distance, where he could trust himself.
That all changed in 1x05 when Abby's mom goes missing and they have their first face-to-face.
Tumblr media
Nothing happens. They're both too caught in the moment to do anything before they focus back on finding her mother. Their first actual point of contact comes after they intercept a call about a downed power pole with possible injuries on sight.
Tumblr media
After working together to save a child, Buck offers the dispatcher a high five. Once she accepts, he takes her hand, holds it close to examine it, and laughs when she questions what he's doing. Later, he would explain that he was checking to see if her hands were shaking like his did on his first calls as a firefighter.
It's a simple gesture but he doesn't go beyond that, letting her go after she questions him and sticking his hands back in his pockets.
That doesn't stop him from letting their shoulders bump together as they walk.
Tumblr media
They're still in this pre-relationship territory that Buck established. Her mother is home, safe, and they're happy, but he still keeps his distance. Abby is the one to close the space and initiate the hug, not that Buck minded. He likes her. He admitted that when he set the boundary. It's why he set the boundary.
Once their hands break away, he shoves them back in his pockets and says goodbye with a quick wave. The boundary is still there, but it is diminished slightly.
Tumblr media
On par with building this relationship before it gets too physical, Buck invites Abby to Chim's Welcome Back party to meet the team and ask her on a date.
Aside from the initial hug she initiates, there's no physical contact, even after she says yes. (Granted, they were running out to answer a call.)
When Buck nearly unalives himself after choking on bread, Abby saves him and offers him a hand for comfort, which he takes.
And my interpretation could be wrong but with all of the contact Abby initiates, it seems to only be after Buck does something big for her. Which might actually reflect how surface level their relationship was in her mind. Yes, he is important because he was with her throughout these major moments in her life, but she doesn't actually like him like him. And I say this because she offered her hand to comfort him in the moment, but she doesn't hold it while he's in the hospital bed.
She is shown to be the one consistently initiating contact, but she didn't once the danger had passed. She just sat by him. Again, she cares for him, but at a surface level. She doesn't love him.
Tumblr media
This is different for Buck because he really does like her. He wants to be in her space. He let's himself take that next step forward with her permission. He is so smitten with her and she is enjoying every bit of the affection, even if she doesn't entirely return it.
(This is turning into a character analysis post more than focusing on the physical affection. As you can see below, Abby initiates the hug. Buck holds out his arm, allowing Abby to decide whether to take it. Abby kisses him goodbye. Their conversation at the table shows Buck with his arm stretched out over the table, making it available for her to grab at any point through the serious discussion. She eventually puts both hands out to touch him before leaning in for a kiss. Basically, again, no direct initiative from Buck. Just opportunity.)
Tumblr media
This doesn't make her heartless. She does show genuine remorse when she has to cancel their hot air balloon ride to help her mother. There are a lot of conflicting things in her life demanding her attention, and she can't sacrifice them just for Buck. Even if she thinks he's sweet, kind, and fun.
With some advice from Bobby, he tells her he's all in with this grandiose, heartfelt speech. And she appreciates that, expressing it with a kiss, but again, it feels surface level. Like he's more invested in making them work than her.
Tumblr media
This moment could be seen as him giving comfort without permission but I consider it a rollover from her asking for comfort at the funeral. There, she had walked over and reached out, asking for the hug, and he gave it to her. She is very much still in the mindset she was at the funeral as she finishes moving her mother's things out of her dining room. It is very much a second funeral, and Buck takes her breakdown as permission to continue the comfort she asked for before.
Finally, she decides to leave.
Tumblr media
(Disclaimer: I know this was a post about physical affection but now I'm just gonna rant about Abby and her treatment of Buck. Fair warning.)
In this scene, Abby says, "I must be crazy to be leaving you behind." Because she knows how much Buck loves her and cherishes their relationship. How devoted he is to her.
She is not obligated to love Buck back in any way. Relationships working isn't a guarantee when you first start out, and they are a fairly new relationship. The reason she is a terrible person from this scene on, is because Buck says, "I'm gonna be right here when you come back, ok?"
And she says nothing. She lets him carry on, tells him to take care of himself, and kisses him goodbye.
She does not end things. She does not ask for a break. She knows he is going to wait for her, even when her feelings don't run as deep, and just lets him suffer.
She strings him along for months. Buck talks about their dwindling phone calls. How detached he feels from her, but how he's enduring it all to support her while she tries to find herself.
Tumblr media
She saw Buck as a safety net. Something to fall back on if everything else didn't work out. Which, clearly, it did as she returned at the end of season 3 (roughly two years later) with a fiance. Never telling him they were done personally, just assuming he moved on. How inconsiderate and evil for someone to do that when she knew exactly how loyal of a man Buck was.
Buck is the one who had to break and give up, rather than her just letting him go. That selfish entitlement is exactly why I raged at her lack of shame when talking to Buck on that bench.
She apologized for him "finding out like that", that she wanted to tell him about Sam and "everything" while she was in town.
He called her out for leaving him at the airport while she had no intention of coming back. Well, "I thought I would." But does that include all the other places he mentioned her visiting before that? She never said when she knew. Just that it didn't start that way.
Then she went into her own issues with her work, her mother, her sense of self. Completely bypassing what she put Buck through like Buck wasn't right there with her. Like he didn't know all of that. Like that wasn't specifically what they talked about at the airport.
And he called her out for that, too! She said being away helped her remember who she used to be. And he says "But you still didn't come home." LIKE SHE IMPLIED SHE WOULD.
To paraphrase, her excuse is "I was afraid that being here, being with you in this city, I would lose myself again" and that is completely understandable. BUT THAT ISN'T THE POINT.
That is a completely justifiable cause for her to never come back to LA. That is in no way, shape, or form a reason to lead Buck on. To drag his hopes through the mud for MONTHS with increasingly decreasing contact. To never say directly to him "I think we should end things."
No, she missed the entire fucking point because, again, she never really loved him. Her reasoning centers around her, how she missed him and wanted to see him, and his feelings don't even f***ing register in her brain. God dammit. She makes me so mad.
This is why I had to dedicate a whole post to her.
TLDR : While Buck loved Abby, his basis for physical affection didn't waver. (Possibly because Abby didn't love him back and never recognized the permission he needed to establish that kind of relationship.) I can examine his later relationships (Ali, Veronica, and Taylor) if you want but I thought Abby was the most prominent and definitely the most scarring. So.
I think I'm gonna do one for Shannon and Eddie, too. Maybe. Definitely thinking about one just between Buck and Eddie. It helps if I know people are actually reading these, so, do with that info what you will hahaha.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

Buck & Eddie: 6x18 was the third time the audience watched their relationship movie
Several people have commented on 911blr, other social media platforms and post-mortem interview articles about the way the audience saw this movie before at the end of season 4 with Buck/Taylor and Eddie/Ana. However, the truth is, it’s the third time the audience has witnessed their dating fiascos.
Buck always follows Eddie’s lead which makes it seem like Buck is waiting on Eddie to let him know he’s an option.  If Eddie’s not dating or attempting to date neither is Buck.  Buck starts dating the very next episode after Eddie does and it’s happened three times and the timeline below proves it.
In 2x7 “Haunted” Buck finally let go of Abby in the same episode that Eddie reconnected with Shannon. Then in 2x8 “Buck Actually” Buck started dating Ali.
Neither of them dated in season 3.
In 4x6 “Jinx” Eddie started dating Ana and in 4x7 “There Goes the Neighborhood” Buck got back onto the dating apps and had a disastrous date with Veronica.  Then he started to heavily pursue Taylor in 4x8 “Breaking Point” but she friend zoned him until after Eddie was shot and she told him she wanted him in 4x14 “Survivors”.
Neither of them dated in 6A.
In 6x14 “Performance Anxiety” Eddie’s aunt set him up on a blind date and in 6x15 “Death and Taxes” Buck said Natalia sees him followed by Eddie giving him a look filled with hurt.  So, Eddie started pursuing Marisol because he thought Buck rejected him again just like he thought Buck did after the will reveal in 4x14.
Once I realized this, I remembered Karen’s comment to Hen in 5x17 “Hero Complex”, “Once is a mistake, twice is a coincidence and three times is a pattern”.  Their relationship fiascos with these one dimensional women keep happening and this is the third time which means it’s a pattern.
Does this mean they’ll be together in season 7, PROBABLY NOT but isn’t it interesting that even though the creators and more than likely the showrunners knew they would be cancelled after season 6 but they chose not to make them CANON?
Since they knew they were going to be cancelled they didn’t have anything to lose if they had made Buck and Eddie a CANON couple unless they wanted to stall/delay it yet again.  Therefore, it could mean they were already in talks with Disney months before they told the cast about the switch from Fox to ABC.  Let’s be real for a minute because a deal like that doesn’t happen overnight since there are a lot of legalities and financials that have to be sorted and decided which could mean the 9-1-1 creators and Disney were in talks for months.  Also, it’s possible they were required to sign an NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) stating they wouldn’t release the information until May 1, 2023 when the official announcement was made, hence the reason why the cast wasn’t notified until two hours before the 9-1-1 Fox Cancellation story was released.
This speculation doesn’t dismiss the creators’ or the showrunners’ actions/agendas for 6x18 but all of this seems to be very suspect.  Also, viewers can voice their constructive criticisms about the show they enjoy watching on their own blogs so the creators of that TV show will know their audience isn’t happy and that’s the goal of my posts regarding my lack of enjoyment with season 6 overall.  Since it’s evident they’ve been reading fanfics, it’s possible they read posts and comments too, otherwise how else would they know what the audience thinks about the show they created for entertainment purposes?
Being frustrated with the outcome doesn’t mean anyone should be rude to the actors, actresses, writers and producers because they don’t have the final say.
Disclaimer:  I’m UNSURE if I will watch season 7 and to be honest if I do, I WON’T watch it live.  I won’t know for a while because I’m still reeling from the things that happened in 6x18 but after last night’s dust finally settled (for me at least), I read some wonderful speculation posts here on 911blr this morning and the users analyzed a lot of things I missed during my live watch because I was SUPER PISSED.  I didn’t even watch the last few minutes because it felt so RIDICULOUS and I won’t rewatch that episode again.  LIKE EVER!
For me, season 6 ended at 6x13 “Mixed Feelings” so when and if I feel like writing fanfic again (I probably will because I love writing it but I’ll take a few days to decide) I will act like 6x14-6x18 never existed.

Its way the buck was describing his/eddie relationship without even realising ti and then ravi literally desrive it and buck agreed. Its inteersting how buck doesnt see it and I wonder why, is because its eddie(and he doesnt want to lose him etc) or because he has just accidently built it.
Hey Nonnie
Honestly - watching Buck describe his relationship with Eddie while talking to Maddie and him still not grasping that its Eddie he's talking about is both peak oblivious Buck but also a little heartbreaking - it was compelling viewing, and it still is!!
I can't get over how well they've intertwined all the relationships on 911 in that one scene, because that description Buck gives isn't just describing BUck and Eddies relationship, but Bobby and Anthena's relationship, Hen and Karens, Chim and Maddies and even Michael and Athenas post divorce relationship as well as Michael and Davids relationship. to be able to do that in that way, and in a way that really really highlights how all Bucks other relationships (and actually all the other failed relationships we've seen on the show for all the mains) have been a million miles away from what he's actually looking for. its just a fantastic scene with so many layers!
As to why Buck doesn't yet see that he already has it with Eddie - there are a couple of reasons - the Taylor of it all and the energy he's put into that relationship is the big and obvious one, but there is also the upbringing Buck had - the lack of parental love etc that he received that has made Buck emotionally immature and stunted (Maddies relationship with Doug also plays into this) but also I genuinely don't think its actually occurred to him that he's been steadily building what he wants with Eddie because Buck is the person who tends to follow rather than lead when it comes to his personal life. I find it really interesting that Buck told Taylor that he's sick of being the one doing the chasing - that he's going to not do that anymore, when the reality is far far less black and white than that.
the show has gone out o its way to make it seem like Buck has done the chasing when you look at it superficially, however the reverse is actually the case - Buck is the one being chased in all his relationships with women! Abby chased Buck. Ali also chased Buck. Taylor did chase Buck (in both season 2 and 4/5 and I'll come back to this) and we can even add Lucy into this equation (and its another reason why Lucy is not ever going to be Bucks endgame!). So Buck has a warped perspective when it comes to the chasing and being chased which actually makes things interesting.
So we have Abby who is the one to innitiate contact with Buck (in a highly illegal and immoral way but I'm not getting into that), she is the one to keep pushing that contact, and in a way that leads to Buck (with all his mental trauma and baggage at this point) chasing her for more - she is (in a overly simplified way) teasing and leading him along.
Ali is also the one to make first contact with Buck after the earthquake, she is the one to ask for a date and in that relationship (the little of it we see) shows her leading the direction of everything.
Taylor is the one who plays Buck during the time she's following the 118 - she is using Buck in pursuit of her story. Then she is the one to send the drink over to Buck in the bar, and then she is the one to initiate the news van hook up etc. then in season 4 she strings him along and is the one controlling the 'narrative' until Buck decides to move along - then she is the one taking advantage of his vulnerable state (where have we seen this before!) and through the whole of S5 we see her in control and Buck chasing (including to Oklahoma!)
And of course we see Lucy in the bar being the one to initiate the flirting and the kissing.
It's all so compelling when it come to Buddie and why Buck is oblivious at this moment in time. For me it ties in to Eddies relationship storyline perfectly because, where Buck has been chased, Eddie has been the one doing the chasing.
We obviously don't know exactly how Eddie and Shannon got together initially, but what we know of Eddies childhood and family dynamic, theres a pretty good chance he asked her out back then. Eddie came to LA to try to reconnect with Shannon and he continued to pursue that relationship with her despite his reservations about her and her being back in his (and Christophers) life. Then with Ana, Eddie is (pushed) the one who asks Ana out and then just floats along in a relationship he's not really sure about because its expected - he chases then settles!
the reason I've gone into a detail here is that I wanted to illustrate the patterns of behaviour for both Buck and Eddie the writers have established because I think its significant for Buddie and how we get there and that ties into Bucks current state of obliviousness! I think when we get there, it will be Buck doing the chasing of Eddie. I think Buck will remain largely oblivious until there is a catalyst which leads him to leave obliviousness behind and realise he wants Eddie and that Eddie is everything he's been looking for and is the love of his life.
I think that catalyst may very well be Eddies continued unrepression in 6a which will culminate in a queer awakening that Buck is present for in some way (whether he's the first person Eddie tells or what I don't know). From there, I don't think it will take Buck long to figure everything out and then choose to pursue Eddie - to be the one doing the chasing, which will mean that Eddie is the one being chased for the first time in his life. the fact that this will then be the opposite way to their previous experiences automatically sets Buddie as being different for both of them and thus setting that relationship up for success!
Anyway I've rambled a lot and this is just my thoughts on the reasoning behind the writers leaving Buck in the dark for the moment - because for me it feels very deliberate to have set both Buck and Eddies previous relationships up in the way they have if they don't intend to 'break the cycle' in that way!!
sorry it took so long to get to this ask!
