“They’re not coming back, are they?” Robin’s voice was quiet enough that Steve almost missed it over the ringing in his ears.
“I don't know,” he replied, and Robin gave him a look. “I don’t want to say it - but they should be back. They love their kids too much.”
OR
a post season three rewrite where hopper and joyce never returned from the russian base. what started as a joke of being babysitters becomes reality as steve, robin, nancy and jonathan suddenly find themselves thrust into looking after all the kids as they navigate the grief from all the people lost.
it doesn't help that everything seems to be getting worse again, that the upside down may not be fully gone. it doesn't help that they can barely afford to look after anyone, let alone make sure the law doesn't get involved. it doesn't help that feelings between people in the group may be more complex than first thought.
they can't change the past but they can change the future. and hey, maybe this year is their year, right?

The look on El's face in S1 after she gets overwhelmed and accidentally shoves Lucas or when Mike yells "what's wrong with you" always physically pains me. I've spoken about her bullying in S4 from an autistic perspective, however those S1 scenes are always the ones that have me bawling. Nothing hurts more than the realisation that you've already pushed away your new friends when you were just trying to make them happy. The tears in her eyes as the loneliness starts to set in and she wonders why she's a "monster" breaks me ):

Jane (El or Eleven idc) is now autistic with eggos as her comfort food. She's also partially nonverbal and had trouble picking up words (why she couldn't speak very well compared to 001 & 008 (there isn't a canon reason why that I might've missed right? please enlighten me if so)) it is also why hopper did the whole 'word of the day' thing to help her learn them. Also feel free to add your own head canons cause I really want to hear them!

What do you think about autistic eleven? I headcanon it but people are really against it given her upbringing.
I think there's more than just her upbringing to possibly indicate that Eleven is autistic.
She has a safe food (eggos).
She likes routine and promises and takes this very literally. She gets very distressed when Hopper comes home late because he promised he wouldn't.
She gets overstimulated in the roller rink when she is being surrounded by a crowd and is covering her ears in order to block out the sound.
She has issues with emotional regulation and has very angry outbursts which could be read as meltdowns, especially the one in S2 with Hopper.
She is very morally absolute with her focus on promises and lying. She doesn't really understand nuance when people don't tell her the exact truth.
I think her whole monster/superhero thing is an extension of this moral absolutism. She can't understand the nuances of this stuff. She is either a good person or a bad person and there is no in between.
She has issues with speaking and communication. Other people from the lab, like Kali, were able to pick up on words. Even people in the lab were able to speak better it seems as shown in S4. She didn't speak very much and when she did it was limited, hence why Hopper used to give her a word a day.
As well as that, her being a social outcast also happened in the lab, differentiating her from the other lab kids. She also beat 002 when there probably was some sort of unspoken agreement that she wasn't meant to do that, but she's unable to pick up on social rules unless explicitly communicated.
She's very expressive and struggles with hiding her true emotions.
She doesn't really understand fashion or trends and so she wears more unique combinations of clothing.
She repeats words and phrases from other people frequently like "bitchin", "friends don't lie", "dump your ass", the do you knock scene with Max and stuff like that. This is called echolalia and is associated with autism.
When she's being bullied by Angela it's in a fake nice way. Eleven initially laughs at Angela's first comment and I believe that is because she didn't understand that she was being mean but also didn't understand why she was funny so she laughed in order to fit in without quite understanding why.
I don't think she's intended to be autistic but I do think she has a ton of autistic traits and it's no wonder people headcanon her as autistic, especially after her experiences in S4. I hope it goes without saying you can experience some of this and relate to Eleven without being autistic, I just think it's interesting to analyze her from that pov. Anyone feel free to add to this. Thanks for the ask (:

Propaganda:
Light -
"He's got that strong sense of justice he always follows... just happens to be super messed up (cop father disease) <3 He and L understand each other like no one else because they're both autistic. He's always masking. Unless he's not. He's evil. He's aromantic (or whatever headcanon one has). He's a hater. He's just a kid who grew up in the 2000s (with a cop father). He's an "academic weapon", as the kids say. He's normal -- you have to believe him, he's sooooo normal. He's not the best he's actually the worst, but I love him <3"
Tenma -
"I am autistic, and I heavily relate to him as a person in so many ways. While his autism is just a headcanon for me, I find myself seeing very plausible autistic traits in him that I see in myself. Like his special interest for 10 years since childhood (soccer), the personification of said special interest, and others."
