Let's say you're one of the writer's way back when Atla was first starting. Bryke has stepped back and let the writers do their thing. What are some things you would keep or remove completely? What are things you would have done differently? What would you have liked to explore more of with the story and the characters?
OOOH good question
I would definitely be giving South Asia, Hinduism, and Buddhism their honour back but making Desi main characters not caricatures. I will pay my respects to those religions by using them properly and not discarding them when you don't truly understand their meaning. And better representation will all the cultures.
Likewise, I would make a 4th (or maybe more) book, so we can see the healing of the 4 nations and flesh out the Gaang and other characters properly. I feel like ending it on book 3 was too sudden, and I hate the comic, so I don't even recognize those, since it is so OOC.
I would make Zuatara canon through some slow burn. I would not pair Aang up with anyone, since he is too young but keep him having a crush on Katara for the Chakra arc (which stays true and respect to Hinduism) but to provide a lesson on heartbreak and moving on. Same with Toph, such a cute little baby.
I will REMOVE those nonconsenual kisses entirely. Basically out with Kataang.
I want to see more of the evil politics of the Fire Nation before Aang defeats Ozai and how Zuko deals with it. In contrast, to how Zuko handles politics being Fire Lord.
I WANT more Suki and her backstory. I also want to see her and Ty Lee fight side by side. It would be so cool.
I would actually have Zuko and Katara speak to Azula after the Agni Kai.
I would keep Sokka's sexism arc.
Not only that, but I would love to explore Yue even more and her take on the NWT
I also want to go in depth with Mai, I want to give her some depth.
Have Aang's character understand the Mahabharat scripture before making a choice. (Maybe kill Ozai)
I want to see a healing arc for Azula
I also want Uncle Iroh to face some repercussion of being an activity member of war. I love Uncle Iroh, and I want to write the consequences and him accepting humbly due to his development.
Book 4 and (leading to adulthood) head canons for the Gaang
Katara: Helps the SWT and NWT, then goes on to become ambassador for the SWT in the Fire Nation
Zuko: Fire lord
Aang: Helping all the Nations to heal
Toph: I think she would totally be the creator of the pro-bender, you cannot change my mind, I think she would also become a teacher
Suki: Girlbossing as a Kyoshi Warriors and being known as one of the best
Sokka: Become Chief of SWT and a skilled engineer
I want Katara and Zuko to find his mother together (so we can get good development)
I feel like I have more, but I will add more if I think of any.

the gaang+ and their ideal jacket/coat -type wear?
sorry for taking so long to respond to this one it’s such a fun question i love jackets (also assuming modern au obviously)
aang’s favorite jacket would be one of those windbreakers with like. a vivid 80s color scheme (eg, purple and yellow, orange and blue, green and pink, etc etc). no one but him could pull it off (especially in this day and age) but he looks so cool in it. fresh and fly, even
katara loves jackets and is constantly saying in aang’s vicinity “wow what a gorgeous jacket
if only i had a BEST FRIEND in this CRUEL WORLD who TRULY LOVED ME so that i could wear it
..” and aang never picks up on what she is doing and buys it for her as if it was his own idea every time. and every time katara is like “omg aang!!! how did you know that this was literally the exact jacket i wanted!!!” and she’s being sincere btw. like she either just doesn’t remember or never even catches on to what it is she’s doing. so she’s just like “wow aang is an amazing friend
” somehow totally oblivious to her own machinations.
also katara loves wearing really big puffy coats with thick fur linings in winter, and whenever she zips up and puts the hood up on those bad boys she looks like a big puffy purple marshmallow and you only can just see her little face peeking through the fluff of her hood. and she should look kind of stupid but she doesn’t. in fact she looks sooo cute
toph gets really cold in winter so one year katara gets her one of those really fluffy, puffy coats. she loves it so much she even wears it indoors sometimes. and yes she looks adorable in it too
sokka just has one jacket that he wears for every occasion. it was probably hakoda’s, it’s either brown or green, it’s slightly too large on him, it has one million pockets, and it has a wool lining around the collar. he wears it in winter, in summer, rain or shine, and whenever anyone is like “isn’t that jacket not exactly
weather appropriate?” sokka’s like “wym? this is my jacket.” the truth is, he has such an ordered system of what items go in which pockets that he just can’t be bothered to have to move stuff around if he ever got a second jacket. so he doesn’t
zuko fantasizes about being cool enough to pull off a leather jacket, but in reality he is just a freak in a cardigan.
suki has one denim jacket that she has had since forever that she wears with everything. it’s faded, torn, and has one million pins and patches on it. this jacket is basically like a son to her. bisexual hall of fame jacket.
you know azula loves a fitted blazer. with sharp confident shoulders, but not in an obnoxious way. a sensible color and a sensible cut. classy, elegant, stylish, timeless. but sadly, the other kids in her eighth grade debate club think it’s “a bit much.”
mai is one of those girls who LOVES peacoats. she has a million different nearly identical peacoats in slightly different shades of black, navy blue, maroon, and burgundy (which is slightly different from maroon, GOD). she also has a few black leather jackets (she’s rich) that she looks really cool in, if you were wondering (and zuko isn’t jealous at all).
for ty lee’s birthday, mai gives her a jacket that is the exact same cut as her favorite leather jacket but in a really nice shade of pink. she had it custom made (but she doesn’t tell ty lee that). it is ty lee’s favorite item of clothing, and she cherishes it forever.

Imagine if Post-war Kuei and the rest of the Earth Kingdom (and maybe the Water Tribes) had demanded the arrest and trial of Iroh for his actions during the war and the Seige of BSS. How do you think the Gaang would react to Iroh facing a war crimes tribunal?
Honestly, Aang, Katara, Sokka, and especially Suki don't really know Iroh that well or care about him that much. He spent a lot of time helping Zuko hunt them down, then he ended up helping them, and Zuko won't shut up about him (but Zuko clearly hasn't been receiving the best moral instruction). I think they wouldn't care all that much about Iroh and might be shocked as they learn more about who precisely he is and what he spent most of his life doing. Still, Aang would probably be trying to mediate the situation.
Toph would probably be livid, she likes Iroh. And it's not like she cares much about all the abstract people who he killed. Toph doesn't think in those terms.
Zuko would be in full "I'm about to restart the 100 years war" mode.
Ty Lee would maybe be vaguely sad (she thinks kooky Iroh is funny) but wouldn't really care.
Mai would be indifferent at best and perhaps be a little satisfied. What has Iroh ever done for her or Azula or Ty Lee, other than create problems and ignore them because they're girls? What has he done for Zuko, other than helping screw him up and enabling him to do extremely reckless things? Why the hell should the Fire Nation care about protecting someone who abandoned them, someone with zero sense of responsibility?
Azula would be cackling at the irony of it, while at the same time being very worried what would happen to her and Mai and Ty Lee.

So I always thought the canon pairings in AtLA had good writing/development but all the Aang and Mai bashing has made me decide to rewatch the series because shippers of a certain other ship called them "abusive" and Aang sexist. But honestly, I love how Mai calls Zuko out on his jealousy and possessive behavior in "The Beach" and Aang is always supportive of Katara's dreams, even refusing to be trained by Pakku because he's sexist to Katara. I like that Sukka teaches kids watching the show to treat women with respect but also Kataang and Maiko in the examples I mentioned above are also good examples of feminist moments in the show too.
YES! Anon, say it louder for the people in the back! There are so so SO many amazing feminist moments in this show and honestly I loved watching it with my kids (multiple times, haha) for that reason. I don't remember growing up with media that showed SO may instances of how girls/women could stand up for themselves in those types of situations. I love how Katara stood up to Pakku (with Aang's support! His little "Go, Katara!" makes me smile every time) and also how she CONSTANTLY takes boys on in fights, from pirates and Rough Rhinos to the taunting kids that subsequently get frozen where they stand ("oh, a girl has her ways") and anyone who insults Aang. How SHE is the one to defeat Azula in the end. How the WHOLE SHOW starts with her rant against Sokka's sexism. How Suki finally put's Sokka in his place. How Toph had to be played by "a really BUFF guy" in EIP because the Fire Nation couldn't admit to being bested by a tiny, 12-year-old girl. How Mai won't let Zuko treat her like a possession with no agency of her own. How she is the one to save HIM in the end at Boiling Rock (how's that for a damsel in distress?). How Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee are trusted by the Fire Lord to perform tasks even the highest generals can't achieve. How the show is relentlessly turning sexist stereotypes on their heads and making viewers question what they think they know.
Beyond the feminism (which you all probably already know I adore so much), I love that each of the leading boys has learning experiences wrt less-than-ideal behaviors towards girls/women, because in real life boys (and girls, too!) are GOING to make mistakes as they're learning and it's important to show how they can move beyond those mistakes and not forever be defined by them. Zuko learns not to be a possessive asshat like he is in The Beach (at least, we don't see him act that way towards Mai again--he might as well have broken up with her via text and not given her the option to follow him to the "good side," but he never acts possessive again. Baby steps). Aang learns he can't just solve their relationship problems by kissing Katara when she's confused. He gives her space and she clearly thinks he's learned from it by the end (really, by the next episode). Sokka learns not to be sexist and that sometimes girls are going to be stronger/better fighters than he is AND THAT'S OKAY. Good, even! It doesn't make him "less of a man" or anything like that, and we don't hear those sexist ideas come out of his mouth again. ALL of these make great talking points for parents watching the show with their kids, too.
Kids make mistakes. They lean on stereotypes or prior experiences and sometimes that bites them in the butt. AtLA shows that we can teach kids hard lessons. Not only can we fight back against injustice but we can improve ourselves when we've been the ones to mess up. And I really think that's something special.
Thanks for sending in your thoughts, anon! You're so right.

atla gaang hot takes
Aang is objectively the best male character in the franchise and the reason he gets so much hate is because of the violent racism against asians who aren't japanese, korean or chinese and therefore not 'aesthetic' or 'dream s/os'
Katara is neither a mom friend nor a snooty perfect prep nor a homohobic cishet girl. She's a victim of adultification and parentification,an autistic trans bisexy queen who likes her girls masc and her guys fem(Toph and Aang)and the definition of 'teenage anarchist' who only gets called a conformist because people erase her activism and direct action because she's a punk femme instead of a male edgelord and they think girls can only be rebels if it's to cater to men
Sokka is not stupid but a goofy goober and is the smartest character in the whole show and the only reason he gets called a himbo is tropeified racism. Also he owes Katara money for his treatment of her be so fr,he was a misogynist until he was 15 and she had to deal with him
Toph is a transmasc girl as seen by her getting overjoyed at her Ember Island Players sounding like a guy and it is SO unserious to pit her and Katara against eachother over Aang like they wouldn't all be a happy sapphic polycule(Aang is genderfluid tyvm)
While not her fault,Suki is easily the blandest Atla girl by a longshot and her popularity coming from Katara haters screams colorism from the Ba Sing Se rooftops. Also Zukki is not very good polyam rep unless it's tgirl Zuko,i could not care less about an mlm couple that stands on it's own with a girl slapped on but not really being part of the dynamic,MAKE HER A GIRLKISSER ABOUT IT!!!!
'Zuko was never evil' is factually incorrect and a very liberal take because it absolves him of responsibility that HE was the first person to hold himself accountable for by growing the fuck up and unlearning propaganda and giving the people he had privilege over reperations and it's not the writers fault y'all are fence sitters because of some dumbass crush over a guy who'd never even look in your general direction since you infantalize the shit out of him
And not technically Gaang members but they are in my heart so they get bonuses:Jet was more right than any yt boy you thirst after,Azula being so sexualized in canon is a result of the fetishization of underaged east asian girls,Mai is a lil angel compared to Zuko and you only demonize her because you can't accept unconventional women and Ty Lee is highly underrated and the best non-mc on the show-Autistic tgirl swag methinks

Who let them drink?
As soon as she entered what was supposed to be a party at which she nicely declined the invitation, the explanations from Aang weren't necessary anymore.
“LOOK, EVERYONE! THAT’S MY GIRLFRIEND! LOOK AT HER. ARE YOU LOOKING?! LOOK. AT. HER,” yelled Katara as she climbed her like she was a tree. Having your drunked girlfriend shouting next to your ear isn’t a pleasant experience, but she has had a lot of worse experiences.
“How much has she drunk?”
“I lost the count a while ago.” Aang was trying to catch Sokka who was on the chandelier. Having in mind that they’re still in the royal palace and how high it was, Azula was kind of impressed.
"NO! MY GIRLFRIEND IS PRETTIER AND WAY NICER. LOOK AT HER," he exclaimed, pointing at a very drunk Suki sleeping on the floor.
“Good grief.”
“NO! MY GIRLFRIEND IS THE BEST. SHE ALWAYS HAS SOME KNIVES WITH HER. ALWAYS. YOU KNOW HOW USEFUL THAT IS” Looking at the scene Azula had forgotten about Mai’s knives. The last time Mai got drunk, Ty Lee almost lost an eye.
“They decided to mix something with something and it seems it was easy to drink but pretty strong”
As soon as Aang said that, Mai began to throw up through the window. “Well, at least we don’t need to worry about someone being hurt by her” Azula thought.
“Are you the only one who hasn’t had a drink?” As she pronounced that last word a very drunk Ty Lee revived from the floor next to Suki.
“WELL YOU ALL HAVE GORGEOUS GIRLFRIENDS BUT GUESS WHAT I MADE OUT WITH ALL OF THEM AT SOME POINT SO VICTORY IS ON ME.”
“Wait Katara too?” Azula did not want to be that person, but there’s something uncomfortable about your ex-girlfriend making out with your current girlfriend. “Maybe if I wasn’t dating either a good couple could have been born. I’m pretty sure someday someone would be in that situation.”
“I don’t know where Toph is, but yeah.” If, at that moment, you looked into his eyes you would see how those people right now were taking away years of his life.
“Azzzulaaa, why aren’t you paying attention to me?!” said Katara with her face buried in Azula’s neck.
“That’s a lot of Z’s and A’s for a single word.” said Azula while bringing back her attention to Katara “How much did this woman drink.”
“Don’t cry.” Katara unburied her face from Azula’s neck “How am I not going to cry like in your face?!”
“What about my face?”
Katara began to sob while she said “IT IS PERFECT. HOW ARE YOU EVEN REAL.”
“So I guess emotional drunk Katara is here.”
Suddenly Azula felt how someone had climbed up her body to perch on her shoulders. “Shhh. You also are perfect.” said Ty lee trying to not to fall having 0 balance.
But with that Katara’s change her demeanor and pretends to be serious and sober, only for a second.
“I am not making out with you so you can say you made out with every girl in this room Ty lee.”
“So Katara didn’t do it after all” though Azula with a little bit of relief that she never ever would recognize.
“I girl have to try.” As she said that Ty Lee was down on her feet and Katara face was back on Azula’s neck.
“Zzzzulaaaa she’s trying to get into my pants. But I don’t want her. I only want you into my pants because you are really good in-“ Without letting her end that sentence she decided it was enough.
“Avatar, I'm taking her and I’m sending some servants to help you because Ty Lee is 30 seconds away from throwing up. And then Zuzu will do it after her.”
Aang gave her a confused look but 30 seconds after there was a gross noise coming from Ty Lee
“Whao, do you know their vomit schedule?”
“I usually don’t drink either. And they don’t know how to drink. So I have to develop a plan to proceed every time they say “I have this bottle.””.
The first time she began planning, she was holding Zuko and Ty Lee at the same time while they emptied their stomachs. Also, she developed a sweet revenge plan to enact when they woke up hungover. It changed depending on what instrument was available in the palace. Or if she wanted to be extra evil, she-
“‘Zzzulaa”
“It seems we lost some z's and a's,” Azula said while she dropped her gaze to Katara’s.
“I love you.”
“Wait when did they reach drunk loveliness Katara
Oh shit.”
“WAIT THE BATHROOM IS NEA-“
Too late, it was Katara's turn. “The fucking vomit schedule.”
As Katara kept throwing up a victory shout resonates in the room. “I WON I WAS THE LAST PERSON STANDI-“ Sokka shouted. Then he pass out.
So everyone, except the former princess of the Fire Nation and the last airbender, was down. Thank Agni the Avatar state it's pretty useful to clean vomit.

my thoughts on Netflix's ATLA live action
Tumblr media
As an adult who watched this show growing up and was there for the countdown to the comet (iykyk!!) I have thoughts!
Best: Zuko. angsty, teenage boy depression, father issues, determined to a self-destructive degree. The actor is great at capturing all these facets of Zuko's conflicting, complex character. Really great with the choreography/martial arts too. Its not easy to pull off Zuko's mostly shaven but with a ponytail haircut, but this actor manages it. And yes, the opening scene with him seeing the beam of light from the iceberg and saying, "Finally." did give me some chills. Honestly the actor just captures Zuko really well. Great casting.
Worst: Katara. has the personality of an elegant yet unassuming well watered house plant. Its more because of the writing than the actress
she's doing her best with this depressing egg whites version of Katara she's had thrusted upon her. It's not going to be convincing when Toph comes along next season and calls her sugar queen.
Aang: never has any fun. spends every episode staring into the distance being sorrowful and melancholic. *teardrop rolls down cheek* he is a depressed 40 year old in the body of a 12 year old. He has no fun side to him anymore- an important side for a 12 year old kid to have! Also spends the entirety of season one (you know, titled "water"!) and doesn't learn a lick of waterbending, not even from Katara, who spends a lot of it learning from the waterbending scroll!! Why??? However the actor is doing a great job and I think he captures Aang's essence really well. He is young and I think next season he will improve a lot.
Sokka: I almost forgot to write thoughts down for him, which I think says more than anything else. He's essentially been boiled down to the same old overprotective big brother, but now he comes complete with daddy issues. It's a little hilarious that Katara's worst memory is watching her mom get burned alive by a firebender soldier while Sokka's is hearing his dad say he's disappointed with him. Kind of ruins the moment tbh. They really took all the fun aspects of the main Gaang and dulled them down completely, its sad. At least he's cute though- and imo, the chemistry with Suki's actress was there.
The previous avatars: every single one meets Aang just to berate & yell at him and tell him he shouldn't have friends and where has he been for the past 100 years without giving him a second to speak. What?? Sadly it seems any dignity, grace, or wisdom the previous avatars had in the original, has been completely wiped out in this live action. Also, this idea of them telling Aang about things that are going to happen makes no sense. Did no previous avatar tell Roku his friend was going to betray him, let him die on the island, and start a 100 year long war? Also the idea of Aang being able to communicate ONLY if he's in one of their temples is stupid. What is the point of the avatar state, then? Will Roku be able to teach him anything at all?
Princess Yue: yes I wrote an entire paragraph about her lol. She is one of my favorite minor characters. I think they wanted her to look so accurate to her original counterpart that she just looks too much like a cosplayer, with such a stiff and lifeless looking wig. This is the one and only time I will concede I prefer M. Night's version of Yue as far as costuming goes, though both funnily enough forget her eyebrows shouldn't be dark. The actress was fine. But this version of Yue is quite a different person from og Yue, I can't really compare. Plus, it feels like we see her for a good 10 minutes before she dies for the moon spirit. I couldn't buy into her and Sokka having feelings for each other because it felt like they knew each other for a good 2 hours at most. Ideally, I think these two versions kind of fused together would be perfect.
Tumblr media
Azula/Mai/Ty Lee: Grouping them together because. Azula is the most unconvincing out of the characters for me. I don't buy that this girl is supposed to be the princess Azula for a second. I'm neither intrigued nor intimidated, and that's pretty bad as Azula was one of my top favorite characters from the original. The costume is fine, the wig feels cheap, her dialogue is horrendous, the actress can't convince me. Azula isn't smart or cunning, sharp, or collected, and her "working with Zhao" just made her look dumb when the entire plan flopped. She is a whiny, petulant little girl stamping her feet in every other scene. It's not for me. Also, the way her relationship with Ozai is depicted here makes Ozai look like a loser, too. It's like they want us to not be afraid of either of them.
As for Mai and Ty Lee. Ty Lee is fine. She looks okay, the actress is fine for how little we see her. On Mai, the wig is just so bad I don't get what happened. It's like they're struggling on the line of being realistic with the styling, or leaning completely in cartoon-character-came-to-life. I don't think the actress for Mai here was a good choice.
Dialogue: the worst part of this show. When they're not completely quoting word for word from the original, it's.. just bad. Everything is always exposition and thats not good. The few moments that aren't are just... idk.
CGI: not bad. I was expecting worse. Fire, earth, and air all look great. Water feels a little slow, mostly when its just water and not ice but that can be improved I assume. Koh was pretty cool, as was Wan Shi Tong.
Settings: Beautiful!! Omashu looked great. South and North water tribes looked great. Ozai's throne room looked incredible and I was annoyed every time we see it, he is just standing around and not sitting on his throne. It just reminded me how amazing the buildup to Ozai and Azula's reveals were in og season 1.
Costume: Its either a hit or a miss. There's strangley not much in between. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Iroh, June, Ozai, Jet, Suki, the Kyoshi warriors, all look pretty great. Then you have characters like Azula, Mai, or Yue, who just look like half decent cosplayers. It kind of takes you out of the moment when it looks like the person is a cartoon character, rather than just a normal person. For example, compare how Katara looks compared to Azula.
Music: of course it was fantastic. A lot of it (I think most) was from the original show, which has one of the greatest soundtracks an animated show has ever had imo.
Final thoughts: Ultimately, it was kind of what I was expecting. You can't condense 20+ episodes worth of development into 8 and expect it all to flow perfectly. However, there are also a lot of changes that really don't make sense to me. I am very curious to know how on earth they will do seasons 2 and 3, as season 1 is the slowest in pace compared to the next two seasons. The original's finale was split into four episodes! Unless they add more episodes for next season, it's going to be a big jumbled mess of lore being shoved into our faces. I am also concerned about Toph. The Gaang so far has been stripped of their fun/unique personality traits. Is Toph going to be the same?

Avatar: the Last Airbender - Vigilante AU
Do you ever think about that one time Katara became a vigilante eco-terrorist called the Painted Lady? I feel like that’s not talked about enough.
Here, Katara and Zuko become Best Friends/Vigilante Buddies without knowing each other’s identity
Platonic Identity Porn. If that wasn’t a thing before, it is now.
Sokka & Aang never discovered Katara’s identity as the Painted Lady but Toph knows all.
This could also be a modern AU, in which case all the Gaang are Vigilantes.
- Katara’s the Painted Lady; her mom, dad, and papa (Kya/Hakoda/Bato) were/are part of a secret group investigating and gathering proof of Ozai’s many violations of Native land rights treaties. Kya got badly injured or killed while investigating and Katara isn’t about to let that slide, even if her parents don’t want her involved. She becomes an ecoterrorist targeting Ozai Incorporated.
- Toph’s the Blind Bandit; she ran away from home and is homeless, surviving by being the champion of an illegal fighting ring. She helps out other homeless people whenever she can but doesn’t go out of her way to patrol or anything.
- Zuko’s the Blue Spirit; after being burned, Iroh discovered the abuse and took custody (which wasn’t hard since Ozai didn’t fight for him). Despite this, Zuko feels it’s his responsibility as a son to stop his father’s economic imperialism.
- Sokka’s a Kyoshi Warrior; part of a vigilante team led by Suki. By day, this team is just a Scout Troop that teaches self-defense.
- Jet runs a gang that doubles as anti-hero vigilantes called the Freedom Fighters. He takes in any homeless or abused kid he can and will do anything to keep them fed, happy, and avenged.
- Azula, Mai, & Ty-Lee are a bounty hunter trio hired by Ozai (a corrupt CEO). Azula’s still his daughter, but being in modern times didn’t stop him from molding her into a child soldier to assassinate his enemies.
- Aang’s a new vigilante trying to avenge the monasteries destroyed by Ozai’s corporation. He’s an exchange student living with Katara, Sokka, Hakoda, Bato, and/or Kya.
- Teo (the Mechanic’s son from the Northern Air Temple) kits out all the vigilantes’ gear, tech, and outfits with help from Sokka.

atla characters + star trek
aang
favorite series: he likes the optimism of tos and tng best but he appreciates them all
character he should meet: benjamin sisko. sisko would make him a delicious vegetarian meal, over which they'd discuss struggling with their responsibilities as spiritual leaders
katara
favorite series: ds9 because it has the most explicit antifa politics, and voyager because powerful women. captain katara!
character she should meet: kira nerys. they could bond over losing their mothers at a young age and fighting colonizers, as well as their unwavering faith in their friend who is also a spiritual leader
sokka
favorite series: tng and ds9, but he's seen them all. biggest trekkie of the gaang. has built model spaceships with hakoda
character he should meet: literally any of the engineers. let him follow them around with wide starstruck eyes as they explain the workings of a warp engine. it's what he deserves
toph
favorite series: does not watch star trek but has heard sokka talk about it
character she should meet: seven of nine. they've both fought fictionalized versions of the Rock, they're both defiantly independant because of a repressive upbringing, and seven has been known to bond with intelligent young girls
zuko
favorite series: tos and tng - they offered a comforting refuge for him as a kid with a difficult home life
character he should meet: worf. the only people more obsessed with honor than zuko are klingons, and they could theoretically bond over having a complicated relationship with the warrior culture they're from. but that would require emotional openness, so realistically they'd probably just spar and compare weapons. that would still be fun for them i think. also worf might tell him he fights with honor and that would make him happy
suki
favorite series: voyager, because women, but familiar with all of them via sokka
character she should meet: jadzia dax. they'd spar and talk about their dating lives, bicon to bicon
azula
favorite series: star trek is for nerds like zuzu
character she should meet: kathryn janeway. she'd benefit from a mom figure, and she'd need one who's just as tough as she is and who has experience guiding young women who were raised to be weapons
mai
favorite series: ds9. she enjoys the moral ambiguity and political drama
character she should meet: spock. with the blunt bangs and emotionless attitude, she's basically already a vulcan, and like spock she has had to rebel against her emotionally repressive upbringing
ty lee
favorite series: ds9, also for the moral ambiguity and political drama.
character she should meet: deanna troi. they could have a girls' night eating chocolate and talking about vibes and auras and how people underestimate them
iroh
favorite series: tos - he likes a classic. the politics probably went over his head when he was young though
character he should meet: jean-luc picard. they'd have tea and talk about philosophy, in the process of which picard would call him on only changing his mind about the war when he was personally affected. iroh could call picard out for being a frenchman lecturing an asian man about imperialism but unfortunately picard has probably already acknowledged Earth's past in his speech, plus iroh is from a fantasyland and doesn't know what french people are
hakoda
favorite series: don't make him pick! he's seen them all and is the reason sokka and katara are into it. your stereotypical nerd dad. he sings along to the enterprise theme song, much to his children's embarrassment
character he should meet: james t. kirk. bakoda is so spirkcoded

Hello! I was reading back through the Neither Queen Nor Pawn AU posts and wondered if you would be willing to show us Zuko's rescue... Or whatever else the Gaang were going to find in Ozai's apartment.
We're past Zuko's rescue, so this is what happens next. Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and Neither Queen nor Pawn: [Link].
1. The next morning, the world crashes back in. Sokka, or maybe Suki, must have called Iroh, and he and Aang are there for breakfast. All of them, Mai, Tom-Tom, Zuko, Toph, Ty Lee, Iroh, Katara, Aang, Sokka, and Suki are all clustered around the kitchen table, scrunched in on the couch, or sprawling on cushions on the floor in the tiny appartment Sokka, Katara, Suki, Toph and Ty Lee share. At some point, Ty Lee must have taken a proper shower and put on her pajamas. They're pink. She has on actual bunny slippers. Katara has a blue fuzzy bathrobe on over sweatpants and a faded teashirt. The rest of them slept in their clothes. Everything looks so bizarrely normal, when everything is about to change forever.
2. They've got, well, a whole pile of problems, so many, it's hard to even think about how to untangle them, much less solve them. Iroh's apartment is no longer safe. None of them can go back there, not with Ozai on the hunt. Mai, Zuko, Iroh, Ty Lee, and Aang can't do anything under their own names without Ozai finding them, and that means all of their GEDs and college courses are right down the drain. Fortunately it's winter break, and it's not like any of them registered for classes yet, but still. Mai wants to scream. And then there's the fact that Mai kidnapped Tom Tom. It doesn't matter how terrible her parents are, they are his parents and they signed him up for Ozai's school, and legally speaking, Mai kidnapped her brother.
3. Iroh thinks the best defense is a good offence, and a good cover story. Ozai is a cult leader. His school is a cover for a Cult in which he says the children all have magic powers. They escaped, and then he tracked them down and kidnapped his own son at gunpoint. When Mai and their friends went to rescue him, They found Mai's brother and rescued him too. Having all grown up in a cult, it didn't occur to them to go to the police, but aftwrwards, They went to Iroh, who they trust, and he talked them into going to the police. Ozai also kidnapped Aang before faking the gass explosion at the monastery where he had been living with his grandfather. The story has the added benefit of being almost true. The only thing they're lying about is their powers not bei g real. They can get Ozai put in jail and maybe get into witness protection.
4. Mai is so taken with how tidy the whole solution is, she forgets to worry if prison could even hold Ozai, and even Azula, with their powers.
5. Throughout Iroh's proposal, Suki has been cradling an oversized mug of hot chocolate, taking occasional sips. When Iroh finishes talking, she sets the mug down on the counter with a harsh clink. "No," she says, just as harshly. They can't go to the police. They can't turn Ozai in. If they did, the federal government would quickly figure out that Ozai's powers were real, that their powers were real, and that sounds like a great way to wind up dead, or disappeared into a research facility like the one Suki grew up in. And she is not going back.

Why I Love A:TLA part- 1
The characters are awesome
I wanted to remind everyone why we love the characters in Avatar, so that's why I came up with this post. Let it be an appreciation post for our beloved chatacters and remind us why we love them so much. Let's count all the main characters one by one, and note why they're all well-written and interesting characters!
1-) Katara: She's the female main character of the series. She's hardworking, determined and optimistic. She is (arguably) the most powerful waterbender, but her abilities didn't come to her naturally. With a lot of training and hard work, she became the strong waterbender that she is today. Katara is also very kind, polite and compassionate. She has her flaws as a person and as a character, but honestly, it only makes her a more realistic character. But one thing for sure: she's absolutely cool and badass
Tumblr media
2-) Toph: As a contrast to feminine Katara, Toph is the absolutely masculine and tomboyish female main character of the series. She comes across as a tough, strong and bold girl. And just like Katara, Toph is also the master of her own element. However, despite her cold and snarky attitude, Toph is far from heartless. She's also a kind person with her own flaws, but at the end, she's ready to do what's right. And of course, she's a total badass
Tumblr media
3-) Suki: Despite not being a bender like Katara and Toph, Suki is still a very strong and capable warrior. She can be masculine and always ready to kick some asses like Toph, and also can be feminine and soft like Katara.
Tumblr media
4-) Mai: Similar to Suki, Mai is not a bender either. But she's still a deadly fighter. She's capable enough to take down a dozen of firebending guardians on her own. Even though Mai appears to be cold and apathetic, she's still loyal and caring, and her heart is in the right place.
Tumblr media
5-) Ty Lee: She's the first person who is known to use chi blocking, and she's a master acrobat too. Unlike Mai, Ty Lee is sweet and nice, but that doesn't make her any less dangerous in fights. She's (arguably) the most capable warrior in hand-to-hand combat.
Tumblr media
6-) Azula: Intelligent and calculating, Azula is a perfect villain and the main female antagonist of the series. She's a firebending prodigy and a deadly warrior. And she's just as ruthless as her father, not any less softer just because she's a girl. Azula may be evil, but she's far from being a shallow character. Which is why she's always been a complex character.
Tumblr media
7-) Zuko: He may not be a natural prodigy like his sister, but Zuko is still a very strong firebender with a very strong will. He never gives up and always stands up for what he thinks is right. Not all his decisions were good, but he still works hard to improve himself. At the end, Zuko does his best to do the right thing. And in a metaphorical way, his character is (arguably) the most interesting one of the series because it tells you a lot: to always keep trying even though it's hard, life might not what you expect it to be but there's always hope... This is why he is a brilliant character who has the best redemption arc ever
Tumblr media
8-) Uncle Iroh: The tea-loving and fatherly uncle that we all love! Iroh is wise, kind, loving... But also an extremely powerful firebender! He indeed had bad actions. But he realized his mistakes and now trying to do anything to bring peace and balance. This man is the brilliant mentor figure that we all admire!
Tumblr media
9-) Ozai: Unlike his kind and funny brother, Ozai is the cutthroat and cruel main antagonist of the series, similar to his daughter. He is an evil person, but it doesn't change the fact that he is still one of the most powerful firebenders that ever lived!
Tumblr media
10-) Aang: The kind, polite and friendly male protagonist of the series. He might be goofy, but he is far from being stupid. He is smart and strong, and a real badass in fights, especially when he enters the Avatar state! Aang is one of the strongest Avatars who ever lived, but he didn't choose this responsiblity in the first place. However, he accepted it and now ready to do anything to restore the balance
Tumblr media
11-) Sokka: He is the brains of the Team Avatar, or The Gaang as he calls it. Sokka is not a bender like his friends, but still a good fighter and he is the one who comes up with plans. He is also a pure comedy material. That's why it's always so fun to watch him!

Hello, I wanted to ask a question regarding Azula,Katara, and all rest. To provide context, recently I was both rereading “the corners of the world, our mere prologue” (don’t give that look for “rereading” the story. It’s your fault for writing an awesome fic In the first place) and watching “Critical role” campaign III. Which brought to mind the parts of Corners, were Azula and Katara join the Gaang in several D&D campaigns.
Thus, I was wondering what you believed the respective Dungeons and Dragons alignments, attributes/ability scores, and classes are for Azula, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Aang, Suki, Toph, Mai, Ty Lee, etc?
Apologies for any grammar mistakes.
Looking forward to the next “Blue Moon” chapter!
-745th voice of the people
Hey, thanks, this is a great question, but it's also a question that would take a lot of time and effort to answer properly, like, I would have to create a lot of D&D characters from the scratch. :)
But since it's something that I actually find interesting, I'm going to attempt to do that. And to do that, I'm going to use the character creator of a video game (Solasta: Crown of the Magister) using 5E D&D rules. Now, the options of the character creator are somewhat limiting, but I think I can make reasonably decent approximations.
This is obviously going to take some time, so I'll just start with Katara first.
In 'the corners of the world' I wrote Katara playing a frost mage, just to kind of defy the stereotype of her always being seen as a healer. But I figure that realistically, this party is going to need a cleric, and I don't see anyone else playing one. Besides, you can give the cleric some offensive punch, too. That's why Katara has the elemental (Ice) domain, as a nod to her waterbending.
Also, there was no way to straight up select alignment, instead you have to pick up some personality traits, where again options are limited. The ones I picked for Katara (kindness, altruism, caution) place her more on the Chaotic Good side, which I think is the best fit for her.
Tumblr media
This was pretty fun to do, so I'll get around to the others later. :) Thanks for the ask!

Hi, hope you're well.
How would you rate the gaang + fire ladies' ability to work in customer service?
(there are so many fics of sokka working in retail and mai working in flowershops and I just don't think they're built like that— sokka has no patience for dumb questions and mai would probably rather die)
wait that’s so funny they literally are not built to serve people like that they’d kill themselves. especially mai i cannot imagine her having any kind of working class job and i know she hates flowers thinks they’re disgusting!!! i could see sokka being a tutor (in my modern au that’s how he meets toph. bc she drives everyone else away but then he meets her and he’s like “why ?? she is so cool”) and even working at the jasmine dragon (iroh is a chill boss so that’s why) but he could NOT do retail he’d kill himself before working black friday (in my modern au they’re also in new jersey. bc that’s very funny to me). but anyway!!
aang: i think he’d hate having to answer to someone else like just doing something he was told to do that he does not want to do ever would make his skin crawl. but when it comes to interacting with people even the worst rudest customers he is very friendly. even as a twelve year old he’s extremely patient (except when you are keeping him apart from a loved one, which is understandable!)
katara: i actually think katara working at a local coffee shop or smth is very plausible. she would have a tier ranking of all the regular customers in her head (and maybe even on paper) and she would treat them accordingly, ranging from excessive flirting to passive aggressive eye twitch. she’s good at her job for a communist who also needs to be liked by everyone at all times or she’ll die!
sokka: when he thinks a customer is stupid or annoying he starts talking slower and using smaller words in such an infuriatingly condescending way, but with the plausible deniability of “he was just being helpful” so that he can never actually get in trouble for it. but they both know he was being an asshole!!!!
toph: she needs to tell it like it is every five minutes or she’ll literally die it’s like a source of air for her. but i do think customer service would be good for her. she would enjoy it more than being a c*p that’s for sure! (low blow, sorry.)
zuko: okay well we see him be a tea server and the reviews are mixed. i think the thing about zuko that you have to understand is that if he is in a good mood he is a delight to have around and if he is in a bad mood he is a monster and his vibes ruin every room he’s in. so his proficiency at customer service is also just entirely dependent on how he is feeling at any given moment. i think he’d be happy serving tea once he’s the firelord though because it’s nostalgic and a respite for him. not so much when he’s an angry teen in ba sing se and he wants to be anywhere else.
suki: she’d be good at it because she is good at everything but she would definitely employ sokka’s plausibly deniable tactics of condescension. she has a lot more patience for people than sokka does, but she’d still enjoy messing with people, maybe even just out of boredom.
ty lee: she pretends to be stupid on purpose with customers she doesn’t like and when they try to complain to her manager she’s like “i am the manager” and when they question how she’s still allowed to work despite being so incompetent everyone else vouches for her they’re like “she’s literally our best employee.”
mai: would kill herself before that ever happened.
azula: see above, but also i think it could be good for her.

Why are some hating on the Zuko-centric movie???; a rant.
I just saw a post about how the creator thought the new Zuko-centric movie isn’t going to be good because of how overexposed Zuko’s character is??? Lemme just say that the reason he is “more of a protagonist” than Aang is through a lot of focus on him in fandom is probably because I personally think he had one of the best character developments??? Like think about it.
What would a TV show about Katara or Sokka be like? Them living day to day because their entire village is made up of elders, mothers and children? And thats not counting the fact that a lot of their character development happens during the war when they are exposed to things that they wouldnt be exposed to at the South Pole. Sokka’s sexism is mostly mollified by meeting Suki (at the very beginning, which develops with the more strong women he meets who proves him wrong). Katara’s naivety and bottled up rage is dealt with during the entire series as she is exposed to the realities of war and meets people who challenge her previously black and white perspectives.
What would a TV show about Aang be like? Him living like a regular Airbender in which he doesn’t undergo any struggles because he hasn’t found out that he is the Avatar and hasn’t had to face any of the moral challenges he faces in the show as a result of the war? It wouldn’t be too good for those who are looking for character and plot development, it would fit more in a show TV show season acting as a prequel for all the main characters involved in the TV show.
What would a TV show about Toph be like? Her living a boring life by day and winning Earthbending fights by night? That would get pretty old quickly because it doesn’t change until she meets the Gaang as a result of the war.
What would a TV show about Suki be like? Her training the Kyoshi warriors day in and day out? I admit, this could have potential if they develop how Kyoshi Island stays out of the way (as a neutral port) but still watches on in fear, wondering when they will be invaded by the Fire Nation. But other than world building, it wouldn’t have too much potential to show of Suki’s character development that she has as she is exposed to the war and undoubtedly loses her innocence and naivety.
The only interesting characters I could think of would be those in the Fire Nation, because those character’s character building isn’t reliant on being exposed to the war during the timeline of the actual show, because they have been exposed to said war for literally their entire lives.
Zuko, Azula, Iroh, even Mai (I would say Ty Lee but I feel like she would be a bit too over the top and naive for some people to handle a whole movie or TV show about, as again, her character development is shown when the Fire Nation gave is falling apart at Ember Island) would be perfect for a solo show because their character development started long before the tv show’s timeline, which is showcased in the flashbacks.
We could see how Zuko’s internal struggles between making his father proud by doing what was expected of him to contribute to the war and listening to his mother’s words of kindness and mercy (as these two things are the literal polar opposite of each other). We could see Azula and Zuko struggle with their own relationships with both their parents (Azula and Ozai’s toxic realtionship of manipulation and corruption, Azula and Ursa’s relationship built off fear and inadequacy) and each other (Azula’s desire to prove that she is better than Zuko because that’s what their father did to pit them against each other).
We could see Mai struggling to fit in with high society before becoming the bored and (almost) emotionless character we know through the show.
We could see Iroh’s development going from someone whole-heartedly supporting the war tearing the world apart enough to lead a massive military expedition to claim one of the last Earth Kindgom strongholds, to joining an Underground rebellion to end the war.
There’s so much potential for both worldbuilding and characterisation within the Fire Nation before the show’s timeline that it seems stupid to criticise the writers for choosing a character most people like, with already spectacular character building (still one of the best redemption arcs I’ve ever seen, cartoon be damned) from the Fire Nation over a 12-year-old monk who doesnt really make any effort to acknowledge and fix his own mistakes?
(Not to mention Aang’s only really explored characterisation for me was his morals and attitude regarding his duties as Avatar and ending the war. I saw no real person character development other than his moral development?)
That being said, I don’t know how the creators are going to handle it in terms of being accurate to characters and handling deeper topics carefully and accurately and from seeing small references and snippets to the comics, my faith isn’t too strong in them to be completely honest with you all.
Anyway I might make a separate post about the potentials of the Fire Nation worldbuilding pre-canon later, but for now, thanks for reading this stupidly long rant!

Watching Avatar, Part 12
Breaking from my usual four-episode-batch approach, because the various multi-parters make consistency difficult. Instead, let's wrap up everything before the main event. Everything being a lot of Special Fieldtrips With Zuko.
12. “The Western Air Temple”: Zuko finally joins the Gaang! I was fully not expecting his base personality under all the issues to be Dorky Loser, but I guess that probably is pretty accurate for most over-aggressive tryhard teenagers, so. Still, the 180 was very funny. Also, “I bet you’re surprised to see me”/ “Not really, since you follow us everywhere” was absolutely hysterical. Was surprised Sokka wasn't more upset about Zuko helping cause Yue's "death". Called it on Katara, and also called it on Toph’s encounter with Iroh being pretty important to how the group would ultimately feel about Zuko. I didn’t expect her to go so far out of her way to try and do something about the group’s rejection of him, though. That was a cool moment for her, since she’s so prickly and antisocial normally. When Combustion Man showed up I fully expected Zuko to have paid him to attack the Gaang again so Zuko could “rescue” them, with disastrous consequences, and was very relieved to be wrong. Fun as it would have been to watch him chasing after them, ineptly trying to help, for a few episodes, I’m glad we’re getting on with things. I do wish we got more of the Expanded Gaang, though.
13. “The Firebending Masters”: I had worried in the previous episode that Aang was rejecting Zuko (and all those other suggestions) as firebending teachers because he’s still hung up on hurting Katara (and further disheartened by his failure during the eclipse), but that seems not to be the case. I liked how they handled Zuko needing to find a new emotional source for his bending, that was cool. I 100% bought the “Iroh killed the last dragon before he reformed” thing and was delighted when that turned out to be a cover for Iroh once again being the best ever. I loved the statues teaching them the form, I loved the dragons, the whole episode was great worldbuilding.
14. “The Boiling Rock, Part 1”: Aww, Zuko serving tea like Iroh is adorable. (Where IS Iroh, anyway?) Why tf does Sokka not bring Katara in on this? It’s her dad, too! The island prison is brilliant, very screwed up and the “cooler” thing is great—it makes total sense as a horrible torture for firebenders. (Sticking Hakoda in there probably would have backfired, though.) Loved using it as part of the escape plan. THRILLED to have Suki back and in pretty good shape. Concerned about Zuko being recognized, even if they do escape—they’ve now been located. I hope they don’t kill off Hakoda during Escape Attempt 2.
15. “The Boiling Rock, Part 2”: Sokka really needs to learn to ID himself to his allies, lol. Ooooh shit, here’s Mai. I’m impressed with Chit Sang still not giving Sokka up. OOOOH SHIT, here’s Azula. I suppose she was inevitable. Awww, the poor anger management guy, I love him and hope he gets out and has a very nice life. The escape plan was going very well until the Warden turned out to be suicidal??? Why would he give that order? Exact opposite energy as MAI COMING IN WITH THE STEEL CHAIR and saving Zuko despite what Azula will do. Aww, Ty Lee, you weird sweetheart, I loved watching her save Mai in turn. Will Azula learn from this? Probably not but I live in hope. (How does Chit Sang feel about leaving his gf & bff behind this time?) Nice to have Hakoda back alive (and Suki)—will we start seeing more of the expanded Gaang now? How will having a grownup around affect things?
16. “The Southern Raiders”: Oof. Great shock opening (and great line from Azula about becoming an only child, true sibling energy there). No more expanded Gaang, which is a missed storytelling opportunity for me, but this late in the series probably makes the most sense. I would have liked to see a bit more about Katara being entitled to her feelings and not being required to forgive on others’ schedules, but an Inigo Montoya-themed field trip works too. (It’s a very old-Zuko thing to suggest, though.) Deeply uncool of her to tell Sokka she loved their mom more, though. Watching this episode and how it mirrored Aang’s worst side after they lost Appa was interesting—we don’t get to see Sokka, Toph, or the others in their darkest moments in the same way. (Zuko doesn’t count, the whole show is his darkest moment.) (Where IS Uncle Iroh?) But bloodbending? Wtf Katara! I kind of expected she’d end up using that as a last-resort-before-death thing, but I guess this emphasizes its evil nature far more. No good use for it, only bad ones. I wasn’t shocked that they went with the “you’re not worth murder” approach to the revenge arc, and it did set up the conflict over killing Ozai well. (I did notice that they showed us Yon Rha’s life is miserable, though. Would it have been harder if he’d been a happy man who “just followed orders”?)
17. “The Ember Island Players”: Oh, HERE is the episode that gets referenced all the time. Ngl, it was
uneven for me. I feel like it could have gone a little earlier in the series instead of right before The Main Event, both tonally and in terms of emotional continuity. Knowing that Aang and Katara end up together at the end of the show, it seemed weird to have their relationship issues here, instead of earlier. Likewise, the play lasting the whole episode with no other plot was odd. It essentially functioned as an extended “previously on Avatar”. Maybe it’s just because we’re speeding toward the end of the series and I’m going to miss it, but I would have preferred to bask in the world a little bit more, instead of this dvd-extra-vibes ep.
Next up: Sozin's comet and the end of the show! I'm not ready.

None is Fair in Trust and Peace
none is fair in trust and peace by Nexbookz
“The power levels of this universe and theirs have shifted in the past century or so. With our worlds in a state of imbalance, they will not be able to safely cross back. Their world has recently found their equilibrium, so it is up to you all to bring balance to this world and be able to send them back. They cannot return until the war is over and peace is established.”
To get home, Katsuki and Kirishima must help Team Avatar end the Hundred Year War.
Easy, right?
