28/08/2023-Bank Holiday Monday at Fishlake Meadows
Photos taken in this set: 1. Orange balsam. 2, 5, 9 and 10. Beautiful views at this pretty, distinctive and biodiverse wetland spot. 3. Willowherb, I believe broad-leaved. 4. Hogweed with a fly on. 6. Great White Egret, it was an honour to see these striking birds so well today. It was particularly stunning watching two fly, low, jet like over the reedbeds in a tranquil and effortless way, it was so pleasurable and soothing to see. These are birds I love. 7. Another I love, an Osprey. I was glad I took the opportunity to get a visit in here today generally but especially as this Osprey had been about and it was amazing to see it. From both the path and roadside viewpoint I got epic views of this bird as it sat and also seeing it fly and the dramatic splash as it dived. These views were exceptional and it was a heartfelt experience on its own. But when stood at the path with a couple I got talking to watching it I was stunned when a second Osprey flew over. As it did a bit of a circuit it was an honour to watch this enormous bird and I am buzzing that I saw this. What a year it's been for me for Ospreys again with the Scotland and Rutland experiences and I'm glad to add home Hampshire sightings to the story. 8. Bird vetch which looked beautiful.
Other bird highlights on the walk ere Buzzard, Kestrel, Carrion Crow, Magpie, Woodpigeon, Chiffchaff, an intimate Blackcap view, Cetti's Warbler the fluent sound of the reedbead heard well, Long-tailed Tit, Blue Tit, Robin, House Martin, Gadwalls seen very well, Great Crested Grebe, Grey Heron flying well and Cormorant. I got a nice view of a Grey Squirrel. Either a Red Admiral or a Peacock I couldn't quite see which as it flew on and Small White were good butterflies to see. I had a dalliance with dragonflies on the walk getting phenomenal views of Migrant Hawkers flying high over and beside me and dazzling male Common Darters sparkling ruby gems below. A demoiselle was nice to see too as were a wasp and bees. Other key flowers on the walk around the wetlands were water mint, great willowherb, hemp agrimony, nightshade, beautiful shaped water speedwell possibly a first for me, forget-me-not, burdock, comfrey, meadowsweet, mugwort, gypsywort, purple loosestrife, marsh woundwort, white deadnettle, ragwort, fleabane, herb-Robert, wood avens and giant chickweed. Mistletoe clinging to a distinctive dead tree of the site, beautiful elderberries again and rose hips were good to see. Sunlit Woodpigeon, Collared Dove, Goldfinch, House Sparrow, Starling, Magpie, sedum and fuchsia were highlights at home today.

This bank holiday weekend I'm painting a dinosaur mural and like it's day one and I had forgotten that painting a GIANT painting on a wall is an extreme sport and I have not been training sufficiently....

27/08/23-Ibsley Common in the New Forest
Photos taken in this set: 1, 3, 6, 7 and 8. Views on a lovely walk here, it was wonderful to take in the landscape painted yellow and green by the ripe heather and bracken. It was so good to enjoy immersive purple scenes which were spectacular to take in again. 2. A macro shot of some of that heather right at the end of the walk with a hoverfly coming to the flowering in shot too. 4. One of a fair few mushrooms I enjoyed seeing today, this is a great spot for them. 5. One of two or three Fox moth caterpillars I enjoyed seeing on the walk at varying stages. 9. Tormentil, a key New Forest species kissed well by the sun this afternoon. 10. A Dor beetle it was nice to see, though facing some difficulty.
It was nice to hear for a while the atmospheric call of a Buzzard on a second Sunday running and see the bird, with Stonechat and Meadow Pipit seen very well in this purple landscape. Fallow Deers and New Forest Ponies were beautiful mammals to see at a distance during the time here this afternoon. Ichneumon wasp which was thrilling to see, a yellow quartet of gorse mixing well with the heather, lesser spearwort in water, buttercup and ragwort, milkwort, sheep's sorrel, possible bog asphodel and I believe the shaggy scalycap mushrooms clinging to the base of a tree were other highlights on the walk. Species I saw at Old Winchester Hill earlier today which my last post details and here as well were Gatekeeper, Small Heath, devil's-bit scabious a flower I love looking for in the forest as we go into September and bramble flower. I enjoyed fantastic time in two national park spots in the South Downs and here today. It was nice to see borage on a roundabout on the way home with Goldfinch, Brown House moth and fly seen at home.

Happy Easter : Celebrating with Family and Friends
Greetings to those who celebrate Easter! I hope you have a joyous and fulfilling holiday. For those who do not celebrate Easter, I wish you a fantastic weekend filled with relaxation and fun. Be mindful not to overindulge too much, but if you do, savour every moment of it! Not sure about yours, but my local supermarket still has plenty of yummy chocolate eggs on the shelves. May this Easter…

I've been pondering doing a crowdfunding campaign for The Beekeeper's Picnic later this year. I've run four successful personal kickstarters since 2018, but I've found the logistics of shipping out of the UK have just got harder and harder over time. So, I've been coming up with ideas for nice digital rewards.
And I think I've come up with a really good one.
Introducing...
Printable craftable Beekeeper's Picnic paper dolls!
Tumblr media
With a printer, a craft knife and some patience, anyone can have their own retirement-era Holmes and Watson! Here they are ready for a fun day at the beach...
Tumblr media
(Yes I did position their hands like that so they can hold hands, you're welcome)
Or perhaps Holmes' brother Mycroft can come over and they'll have a little sophisticated pajama party.
Tumblr media
My cat Malkin befriended Tiny Mycroft immediately.
Tumblr media
You can try to mix and match their clothes, but you will be met with limited success. Although perhaps this provides some explanation for why Mycroft is the better at observation and deduction - it is simply a matter of cranial capacity...
Tumblr media
I can feel the 'annoying younger sibling' energy radiating from this.
Finally, as a kid I got really annoyed when paper dolls didn't have underwear as the lowest layer of the doll. I considered that the doll sets which had outerwear as the lowest layer were made by COWARDS.
However I wanted Holmes and Watson to have their swimming costumes as a lowest layer. Since I couldn't imagine The British Government to be very interested in swimming, you do get to see Mycroft's undies.
Tumblr media
Never let it be said that I don't go one step beyond in my fanworks.
