Tumblr media
Today on things I have realised have been american-ised in Hilda that I didn't notice before: The walk signal.
Idk if I would've fully realised before going to the states on holiday but america does these bad boys way differently
Firstly, I've never heard anyone call them a walk signal. Pedestrian crossing or zebra crossing, or just "Green man".
Secondly: The signal's are different
Tumblr media
Usually its a guy standing or even a bike coloured red, and when you can go? It's a green man walking - Hence, green man. Idk how common the bike is off the top of my head but its not always there
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is typically what they look like. The pole with the button you press has the green man, and sometimes there's also a traffic light (upper photo) with the green/red man.
Tumblr media
Sometimes they look like this, but typically it looks like the photos above
It's not important or anything, but I think it's interesting how many little things are different, like them calling jumpers "sweaters" or the side Johanna drives being swapped. Small changes from the original british comic that add up to be a little odd to see at first, but are pretty darn nifty to notice and talk about. I don't know if I would've fully clocked it as american/canadian before I went there and experienced the different signals in person
I just think its Neat
(also these photos are taken from google images. Before anyone thinks they can dox me. Its very dark outside I couldn't take a photo of these if I tried)

Why Lokius Should Have Been Canon
Tumblr media
This is a sort of combo of two metas that didn't quite get point my across. Some parts will be copied directly, but there's a lot of original content. I will discuss the ship between Loki and Mobius, their place in the show, and the MCU at large. My focus for this meta won't be parallels or motifs, because these things border on well-written friendships. But there will be some of that.
Romance in the MCU
There are a lot of straight couples in the MCU. (Almost) Every main hero is in some heterosexual relationship, Loki included.
Tumblr media
(That's not all, not remotely).
But in the LGBTQ+ department... uh.. I think it was mentioned that Valkyrie had a girlfriend... uh... America Chavez had a pride pin... and Loki:
Tumblr media
One line. Queer experiences are never a focal point of a show/movie the same way heterosexual experiences are. And that needs to change.
Romance In the Show
Wrong, toxic, or unsuccessfu romantic love is a recurring theme in the show.
Sylki
Sylki was an icky relationship right off the bat. They are the same person. I can't find the post at the moment, but someone has pointed out in their post that them being the same person is referenced in every episode in season 1 (edit: here it is), which is when the romance took place. This made their romance uncomfortable for many viewers.
(Some consider Sylki a toxic relationship, but for this post, the topic is too large to handle with the nuance I'd like to handle it with).
When he's drunk, Loki compares love to a dagger, stating that it hurts you, but when you try to find strength in it, it's not real.
youtube
Which is exactly what happens. Sylvie pushes Loki into a portal and they never get back together.
The Love Triangle
In 02×03, Ravonna Renslayer is infatuated with Victor Timely, but he leaves her behind and betrays her when Miss Minutes told him to. One episode later, we discover that they were indeed an item, and established the TVA together. He Who Remains deleted her memories and they never rekindle their love.
Later in the episode, is the best example of "wrong" romance in the show. Miss Minutes, the AI clock, confesses her love to Viktor Timely. He, obviously, freaks out and shuts her off. Nothing ever comes of this.
Brad and Dox
This one is small, but a big indication to romance being a theme. In 02×01, we're shown this:
Tumblr media
The gap in the age of the actors is uncomfortable, and a character in universe has this reaction to it. It is never mentioned again.
So what does all of this leave us with? Not much. None of this properly ties to the finale, or anything really. If I were to write the show I would cut a lot of this out, since it serves no purpose. But it does make you keep romance and its shortcomings in mind. The writers want it to be there, in the back of your head.
Loki and Mobius
Finally! I got to talk about them. The two people in question. First things first, who are they, together? They became really supportive, close friends.
Tumblr media
Fans even drew parallels to Chaos & Order, which is a very important theme in Loki. But I'm not here to unpack them. These things don't necessarily make them in love. So what does make them in love? I'll present you my evidence, and you ask yourself,
Would it be valid to suggest romantic implications if a man and a women are:
1) Extremely thouchy with each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Riding on a tandem bike together.
Tumblr media
3) Willing to suffer a fate worst than death for another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) Falling on each other after that^
Tumblr media
5) Literally the Interrupted Declaration of Love trope. (Ex)
Tumblr media
6) Being framed in a circle.
Tumblr media
7) Waiting & giving permission to attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8) Fixing themselvs before seeing the other.
Tumblr media
Of course yes. Maybe you think some of these are a strech, but ultimately, people would point out romantic connotations across the board. And I'm here, pointing them out right now. Some scenes between Loki and Mobius have romantic implications.
Conclusion
Loki is a queer protagonist in the MCU, a universe that lacks representation of queer experiences. His show constantlty reminded us of romance, sometimes for seemigly no reason. In the second season, they wrote him and his best friend with romantic implications. And then, nothing. It should not have been nothing. Lokius should have been canon.

Why is the prestige of an educational institution seemingly so important specifically in the US (i am not from there but why is the ivy league etc regarded as so much better than other unis if what is being taught is the same specifically in the humanities where you do not need expensive equipment)? Except maybe that if there is higher selectivity then the profile of the students will be of ones that are more ambitious / with better grades so overall the level would be higher and the teaching/learning experience would be more intense? sorry for this dumb question, i went to uni in the uk (i am from eu) and their class system and this whole way of thinking astonished me, a lot of arrogance+ignorance+immaturity imo combined, so i am trying to draw parallels about the anglo world i guess
briefly put, universities are now jobs training centers (in a way they've always been so, but not explicitly like this) and the ivies are an employment network like no other. employers will look at your application more favorably if you have an ivy+ on your resume, and you can attend events and/or socialize to get your resume on an employer's desk to begin with; they will disregard your resume if you're from a bad public school. ivies weren't seen as academically rigorous until fairly recently in the context of their long history (berkeley, CA is a presigious "public ivy" city college and hunter college, CUNY, used to be seen as prestigious "public ivies" until funding got choked off), but they were always playgrounds for old money. there's an undeniably higher selectivity for quality, but a lot of those students are the fig leaf the universities use to cover something called legacy admissions, which is when your admissions chances to a school get significantly boosted by having one or both parents as that school's alumni. legacy admissions are at play at all the ivies and nearly all universities in the country, but notably not at MIT. the other reasons why prestige gets so played up, or why the ivies dominate attention, is because almost the entire elite attended ivy+ colleges. in a sense, it's both a self-referential circle and a personal affair on the pages of our dailies and everywhere else (like oxbridge and eton in the uk) etc. this is combined with the general anti-intellectual trend in america, exemplified by significant quantities of stupid people who, for instance, imagine every college student attends CRT 101: from maoism to the sea classes at the ivies (in reality, the vast majority of americans attend publics, and the ivies are quite conservative)

Ok, I want to get real with you Boston Dumb Fuck.
I have been holding onto this post for a bit and the thought behind it has been haunting me for months.
While I am constantly amazed at your lack of moral fiber, when I see a fellow human in trouble I can't turn away. You look like you have just enough energy to literally put one foot in front of the other, play your part and slip into unconsciousness for the rest of the day. I have seen it before and it doesn't end well. It's a living purgatory.
But I also don't like being manipulated or being made to look stupid or crazy, so I will continue to call out your bullshit and how it is emblematic of everything that is wrong in our society. I also don't think many have called you out on your bullshit before so I am happy to provide that service. As much as I desire this to be my last rant to you, I am not naive enough to think that will happen anytime soon. The Red Knight has you tight in its grip (Side note: "The Fisher King" is a great movie to watch or re-watch. It may resonate right now).
I do wish I knew that you understood how fucked up you are and have at least a semblance of a plan of how you are going to make it right once you are free. I think the reaction from your (former) fans and even the general public was a shock to your system and you have so far to go to just come up to sea level again. If past is prologue, I fear you will just coast on your White Male Privlege and never learn the valuable lessons of this disaster. But ultimately, I am probably screaming into a void. At least I have put it out into the universe...
Early on, I compared your work in "Ghosted" to a Matthew Perry performance.
Before I continue, let me say I loved Matthew Perry and I can't believe he is gone. I always felt he had so much potential, as seen in "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "Go On", but there was always a barrier I sensed he put up, almost like it was a performance within a performance. What he thought we wanted him to be. Now, as we know, there was a mountain of insecurity he was hiding and numbing that haunted him to the end. How I wish he could have freed himself and enjoyed some true wins.
Now, I can't help but draw some additional mournful parallels to you and your current state, beyond your "Ghosted" performance within a performance.
We know you hate yourself (you were not joking during the SMA interview). You took your hand off the wheel and eyes off the road, relying only on your Captain America/internet boyfriend/dog dad persona, and wound up trapped in a blind alley. Now you are locked in this ridiculous contract.
To numb what you have become, you have disappeared into weed, at the very least. But escaping using weed is only healthy when you know what you are escaping from. When you have no tether, you are only sucked into a void where you risk not being able to return. You may say "it's just weed", but we have seen you make bad decision after bad decision and it only takes one to be life altering.
This may be hyperbolic. You may be in control of all of this and laughing at our reaction. Maybe you have mastered The Method and apply goth white makeup before you go out, have changed your diet to be sickly thin and hunch over on purpose, for your craft. But my daddy didn't raise a fool and I don't suffer them. I know when something is rotten in Denmark. I was raised to offer a hand when I could, regardless the reason or reward. So my offer is this (much of this is repeated from previous posts, but repetition is key to learning):
STOP! STOP! STOP! Your contractual obligations should be met by now. The little racist twat got press on her project release dates. That is all she deserves. If not, you need a doctor's note saying this is killing you, because it appears it is. And switching from awkwardly showing off that fucking ring or oafishly grabbing the wifey's hand in order to meet that contractual obligation to lovable, single dog dad so as to reinforce your dog food is Nazi-free has got to be dizzying; making the crazy-maker crazy. So whomever thought this was a good idea and kept you in it long after the effects were detrimental, remove them from your circle. They have no place in a healthy future.
Get help to change the behaviors that got you painted into this corner. This situation didn't come out of nowhere. Someone or many someones exploited your vulnerabilities and they could do it again if you aren't careful. And no more shushing or egoic narrative- either that is complete bullshit or no one taught you the next part of the curriculum. For once in your life, take accountability and accept responsibility for your actions.
Take the time to become healthy and strong in mind, body and spirit. And let those who still have a chance of liking you in the future miss you. You even admitted you don't make the best first impression. Lately you haven’t been making the best second, third or fourth either. Even Scarlett seems to be getting tired of you. One or two more stunts and no one is coming back. We may be talking about you, but a short term gain will mean a long term loss. Don't worry, we will remember you, and if you do the work, we will celebrate you.
Take an active role in rebuilding your life. Decide what to be and go be it. Others shouldn't care more about your happiness and success than you do. Enjoy some wins, you are allowed. Get back into the world again and see where you can make an impact (hint- it is not with ASP. I actually think that could set us all back. A good idea whose time has passed).
You were given privlege and opportunity and it is chicken shit you ran as soon as it got a little hard. Fight for your life. Others have lost their chance but you are still here and can make it chicken salad.
PS- "Cousins" is a great movie if you are wondering about the chicken shit/chicken salad line. And don't let anyone tell you the French version is better. They are just being pretentious.

Hi and welcome to this thing that's sort of a prequel to the timeline I'm working on. The working title is Alberta Story, but as you can see I kind of changed directions midway through as I thought about it more, I figured if I was getting frustrated then surely Ed was also getting frustrated with it so I turned it over to him to express that, haha. I wrote the first half of this last fall and stewed on it for about a year and decided, screw it, I don't know where I'm going with this but I will slap on a few more panels and figure it out as I go.
This might be the closest thing to a reboot of the BoAB main storyline for a while. I wanted to do something that gave a cursory outline of Canadian / Albertan history for people who are new to it, but of course it runs the risk of repeating every narrative Canada / Alberta have about themselves and that's quite frustrating, to be honest! Particularly when you are trying to write characters who lived through a great chunk of it.
I was trying to think about where to "start" the story of Alberta, particularly after reading Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta. A lot of the tongue in cheek ahistorical assigning of Albertan-ness to even protozoic life rubbed me the wrong way even though I found it an interesting narrative, so I wanted to illustrate the difficulty of "beginning".
Additionally: I really find it frustrating in the Hetalia fandom when people kind of take Himaruya's approach and suggest the colonized personifications almost predate colonization somehow, like they were "always there", or the approach that they are direct descendants of some ambiguous ancestral "Native America" that mysteriously no longer exists. At the same time, I sort of understand how it also happens with the narratives we construct ourselves, in textbooks and museums, that have long illustrated "pre-history" (Indigenous history) as opposed to "history" (the "Real" history of Euro-Canadians). It's a cultural underpinning that needs to be undone.
I don't make any ambitious claims to produce real, decolonizing work, I realize there's this big gap in this universe I'm building that acknowledges municipal personifications and only vaguely gestures at the idea of others and there's a myriad of issues with that, but it's a place that I as a euro-canadian myself am starting with and I hope to continue learning and growing from here.
"Here" is summed up as: isn't it crazy that a company that was just gifted 1/12th of the surface of the Earth not only predates the idea of this country and its cities but also still exists and is just a place you end up in at the mall now?
More detailed explanation of each panel follows.
Diver's Claw: Several stories in different First Nations cosmologies reference the Creator or another figure making a flood that covered the whole earth, where a survivor (Wisakedjek in Cree/Ojibwe stories, Na'pi in Blackfoot, etc) sends down a succession of animals to the bottom of the waters to retrieve a piece of the old earth, which they can then use to create anew.
Mounds of Earth: When the Northwest Mounted Police were sent out west from Canada after purchasing the territories (including Alberta) from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1870, they marked the border along what would become the 49th parallel between Canada and the United States with piles of dirt.
Descent from the Stars: This is supposed to be a depiction of Manitou Asiniy, also known as the Manitou Stone or Creator's Stone, a meteorite that has spiritual significance to many Indigenous peoples. As I write this, he (as a sacred being, he is referred to with these pronouns) is currently in the custody of the Royal Alberta Museum which has recently agreed to return him to the site where he was originally taken from near Hardisty in 1866. Currently, the gallery is open for worship and ceremony until it is time to repatriate him.
Bodies liquified in coral: this is NOT a scientific illustration, haha. The idea is that a lot of Albertan identity comes from about 400 million years ago in the Devonian period. At the time, a big chunk of "Alberta" was covered by ocean. The organisms lived, died, and over time became crushed by sediment layered over them. Coral has a lot of holes perfect for holding this sludge and fossilizes nicely here, and it is this layer of Earth's long history that speculators are looking for when drilling for oil.
Lips to a book: Alberta joined Confederation on September 1st, 1905, which our last premier tried to commemorate with a holiday that no one showed up to. Back at the turn of the century however, it was a massive party attended by Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier and the Governor General, a position in Canadian parliament that represents the King or Queen of England. Govenor General Grey (his grandpa was the Earl Grey the tea was named for, I believe) was the one who kissed the bible at this inauguration.
Prince: The prince here is Prince Rupert, who Rupert's Land was named for, and the king in question is Charles II of England (yes, the Restoration and Great Fire of London party guy from the Stuart era). Rupert's Land centred on Hudson's Bay and made up over 40% of what is now considered Canada. The Hudson's Bay Company was granted the charter to all this territory - if they found the Northwest Passage while they were at the business of acquiring beaver or otter pelts, it was certainly a bonus.
The rest is fairly self explanatory, I hope. Like I said, I felt like I was falling into the trap of the same old story of pioneers and exploration that has been absolutely done to death in Canadian history, and I didn't have anything particularly new to say about it that would maintain this storybook level of accessibility so I just. Stopped! Shifted gears! haha. Still, I think the fur trade is a very important piece to the puzzle that often gets either a bit overhyped or glossed over in favour of railroads in Canadian history and almost entirely ignored and forgotten in American history, and it makes sense to start there, particularly for Ed who has a lot of Complicated Feelings about it.
Enjoy! Maybe one day I will figure out part two.

how good is arcade gannon... really...
the best. hes literally the best. thats the answer thats it thats all hes the most good.
i was about to make a big long think piece but you know what no, fuck you, i shouldnt have to. i shouldnt have to explain or debunk or anything, if you have any kind of comprehension at ALL youd understand. he is, morally, one of the best people in the entire wasteland. he tries so hard and succeds as best he can. he wants the best for himself and everyone around him which cant be said abt most fuckers in the fallout world. hes so selfless and caring and just. fuck dude.
imagine coming from one of the most vile terrible factions in the fallout universe, imagine growing up with those ideals and yet realizing no hey fuck that, thats bad actually. he subverted the mindset he grew up with so extremely, joining a group almost the exact opposite of the envlave. and even within them you could argue hes one of the optimistic and idealist people. like. shit dude. "he joined bc of their resources and knowledge" are you kidding ?? his main goal is to help people, thats his main drive in life and you dare imply its anything else? you dare imply hes shallow and selfish and would use them just for their books? fucking really? sure its a PLUS but youre emptyheaded thinking thats the only reason.
i will never shut up abt his parallels to carla. he is out of time, hes a prewar relic, he doesnt belong in the shithole that is post nuclear wasteland america. hes something out of a pristine photograph, as perfect as one can get without trying, while remaining humble. hes honestly too good for the world he is in. "how good is he really" too good, hes too good, and i dont mean that in a "its unrealistic how good he is" way, i mean that his world doesnt deserve a man so good.
when they said he uses his enclave knowledge in the independent vegas ending (best ending btw) they dont mean the fascist ideas they held or the conservative mindset they had, dude they were SMART in the enclave, wildly intelligent!! fucking !! sentient deathclaws the fuck !! they had fountains of knowledge, rivalling the followers and the brotherhood. say what you want, yes theyre horrible people, but their scientists were near genius' !!! which made them all the more terrifying!! like Caesar if he wasnt a goddamn dumbass !! their best president was an ai !!! and you misinterpret that so insanely its not FUNNY. hes using all this forgotten knowledge, knowledge that would be lost forever, for good, and you think they meant he was instating fascist regimes into freeside? really? really? and he doesnt. he doesnt want to be his dad. he doesnt want to not want to be his dad or whatever the fuck. he wants his dad to be proud of him. bc thats his fucking father. enclave or not, whatever the hell, thats his father.
he hates the ncr because the ncr sucks. only good idea that the enclave held: ncr sucks. they do. theyre imperialist, theyre capitalists, they suck. regardless of who installed that opinion in him, its right, its correct. bootlicker.
i believe that during the battle arcade, like the other remnants, kept their face hidden so they could go abt their lives after. its entirely believable that noone knew it was him in the tesla armour and he could return to freeside. enclave knowledge and tech is invaluable, im sure julie was willing to not ask too many questions for such helpful and valuable prewar recources. and after he returned im positive that he did not strive for a place of leadership within the fort, i highly doubt it. give orders? where did it say he started giving orders? where? point me to it ?
this is the story of a man with a troubled past, who comes from.horrible roots, who wants to be better than what he was set up to be. its the story of a man finding his place in a world thats not fit for people like him. its the story of a man who wants his parents to be proud of him, without being what they wanted him to be, a thing so many people go through. its the story of a man who fears he is destined to be horrible but defeats his perceived fate. its the story of a good man. arcade gannon is a good man. and thats why hes my favorite character. fuck you.

Ashes of Memory trailer observations
y'all when i saw the poster for this update with Frederick instead of Norton and heard that the featured Hunter was gonna be BQ instead of Nightmare i was SO disappointed BUT this trailer laid my fears to rest and now i'm SUPER excited for this update because as all my fellow detectives doubtlessly do, i have questions. i also have a few points towards my theory that this (Alice's version of events) is some kind of parallel universe, ALTHOUGH the other theory i have is that "Orpheus"' version is somehow altered due to his memory loss issues and that Alice's version is the correct one.
first off, we have ANOTHER variant of the DeRoss family portrait, making this the fifth variant that i'm aware of to date.
Tumblr media
remember from The Journalist's trailer that she has one variant of this portrait in her possession - it's going to be interesting hearing why it's so different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'll spare you another rant on the button eyes being significant somehow but also of note is that in the version that Alice has on her nightstand, it shows the same parents along with herself as a little girl, while obviously the version she finds in the Manor shows the parents with Orpheus and two other people. this leads me to another difference i find intriguing, and that is the comparison to the version of this portrait that The Novelist found in his memory of his Game. this one shows himself as a child along with his parents and Mr. and Mrs. Perez, the forest rangers. their faces are obscured along with that of young "Orpheus". now in the newest variant of this portrait, we get to see their faces, though they are now dressed as a farmer and a maid. i'm not sure if this indicates that the individuals pictured here are not the Perezes, or that in this version the Perez family had different roles in the Manor (if so, it will be fascinating to see whether their son did as well).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i thought this bird might be a nightingale which would have been rather poignant but it's not :/ unless it's a fantasy variant for this universe or something. i wanted to identify it to see if it was of some other significance, but the shot is just too blurry to get a positive ID. my closest guesses based off of that crest, the distinct black collar, and the beige to cream underside would be a Crested Tit (although - and forgive my American-ness here for a sec - the silhouette makes it look WAY more like our Blue Jays here in North America, although i doubt a Chinese design team would pick an American bird rather than a Eurasian species).
ON TO THE MOST INTERESTING PART. yes i will be bringing up my argument that Norton isn't a killer for the umpteenth time, and this time i have some damn good evidence. despite the trailer being REAL keen on making it look like he's pursuing the entomologist who's running for her life, further inspection shows that something very different is going on here. firstly, he's not looking ahead of him as if pursuing someone. he's looking behind him, as though he's the one being pursued.
Tumblr media
slowing the clip down confirms this. you can also see that his expression looks worried, and it's clear why - he is in fact being pursued, and attacked, by a flock of ravens crows*. i don't think it's too big a leap to infer that he's actually being hunted by Nightmare.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
which i feel is confirmed by the subsequent (almost immediately so) appearance of The Man Himself in this incredibly sickass shot
Tumblr media
and another metaphorical shot of the moth (having been used as an allegory for Alice herself in the previous in-game event) being destroyed by the raven crow* during Bird DILF's epic entrance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*i am fully aware they're supposed to be ravens but they're so petite they look much more like crows (ravens are overall much beefier-looking than crows).
so i guess my hopes for this update at this point are 1) more Norton and possibly Bane content, 2) clarification on the whole Perez family and their relationship to the DeRoss family, and 3) Norton's name being cleared once and for all. i also will be appreciating any and all Nightmare content UwU

You asked: “If Jungkook didn't impress you, and you already knew of BTS and had a positive impression of them yet that wasn't enough for you to become interested, how did you become Army?”
To answer, I’d like to recommend an article from “The New Yorker.” I can’t include links in an anonymous ask, but you can search for “How BTS Became One of the Most Popular Bands in History,” by E. Tammy Kim in the June 21, 2022 issue. The author is Korean-American, so she has a connection to Korean culture that I don’t have, but a lot of this article paralleled my feelings. Her premise at the start of the piece is just curiosity: “To continue ignoring the BTS phenomenon was to risk missing something bigger than Beatlemania.” By the end of the article, she’s Army.
After the Good Morning America show this summer, I went back to watch that 2019 BTS performance on GMA. I don’t know why I suddenly became more curious about them this time, when I haven’t before—maybe I just couldn’t escape the cascade of BTS content that YouTube recommended after I searched for “BTS GMA Central Park.” But like E. Tammy Kim, I had a feeling like this was something I couldn’t ignore anymore.
People talk about going down the rabbit hole, and I went down it—hard. There’s just SO MUCH. When Kim started writing her “New Yorker” piece, a friend warned her, “This is the hardest story you’ve ever done,” referring to the sheer volume of BTS material she’d need to explore. I was astounded by the bottomless depths of it. But about a week into this deluge of content (which I was consuming in no chronological order), I came to an inflection point: the video of this “Black Swan” live performance from 2020: again, can’t include a link, but it’s on YouTube: BTS (방탄소년단) - Black Swan [Music Bank / 2020.02.28].
Up until that point, I’d still been thinking of BTS as a pop group. An extraordinarily prolific and astonishingly charismatic one, but still, within the bounds of the everyday. Something about that performance brought me to a hard stop. Suddenly I realized that…*BTS* was a work of art. Not “artists” in the literal meaning of “people who make a living in the arts.” Something bigger than that: BTS *itself* is the art. It’s the music, it’s video, it’s live performance, it’s livestreams, it’s freakin’ Run BTS, it’s Bangtan Universe, it's who they are as themselves, it's their relationship with each other and with Army...it’s *all of it.* I got so emotional about the whole thing that I had a sudden fit of sobbing. The less said about that, the better.
A few weeks later, I found that “New Yorker” article and I was so grateful, because a passage in it perfectly articulated what I’d felt: “…BTS mastered the craft of storytelling across platforms—what contemporary scholars call “transmedia” and what Heidegger called the “total work of art,” or Gesamtkunstwerk.”
The definition of Gesamtkunstwerk is “an artwork, design, or creative process where different art forms are combined to create a single cohesive whole.” See…that’s it. That’s what got me. The *wholeness* of BTS that transcends “pop.” It’s something so few artists have been able to do that it feels uncanny, almost mystical when it does happen. I find it indescribably compelling. I don’t know if that makes me Army or not, but here I am.
Just to bring things down to earth, I also just really, really, *REALLY* adore Suga. Sometimes I have an RM kind of day (as one does) but Suga and the whole Agust D universe? That’s…yeah. I have Agust D fan art in my house now and it’s *beautiful.* So you asked if I had a bias, there it is!
Thank you so much for being curious! I adore your blog and I’ve literally had no one to talk to about any of this, so forgive me for rambling on!
--A Muggle
Thank you so much for writing this. It's beautiful! RM would be proud.
I haven't read that interview, but it's great that it touched you and inspired you! It's funny that it was a music show performance of Black Swan that got to you. When you said Black Swan, I immediately thought you'd bring up the infamous MMA performance! But all Black Swan performances are good performances!
Agust D is my favorite member musically, and I relate to Suga so much! I don't know how you found my blog, but it probably wasn't because of my many reviews of his work?
Thank you for loving my blog, that makes me really happy!!! You can always come rant to me. You wrote so beautifully that I don't even know how to reply, but this ask has to be one of the best I've ever received! BTS *are* art indeed.
And you aren't a Muggle anymore! That can still be your nickname though! You're Army now. Welcome, first time with BTS?
Thanks for the ask!

Okay I've had a bit to recover from the 52 Emotions. Moving through Final Crisis, 70 appearances left to go til Flashpoint.
Justice League of America 2006 #1
Not actually an appearance, but someone impersonates Vic in a flirty note to Vixen and it's very funny to me that a) he's a known pain in the ass among Leaguers and b) she's down for it.
Countdown #40-38
Renee's here! It's not great, she's only here for a couple pages, but she and Kate are kicking ass together, she's funny, she looks good, and Kate calls her Question for the first time.
Crime Bible: Five Lessons of Blood #1
After all this time, Renee gets a solo of her own, and it's SO good.
She's so cool! Relentless, inquisitive, always in motion... it's not that she wasn't great in 52, she was, but she really flourishes when she's in her own space.
#2
😳
I have thoughts about how much Renee's grown but um. Women.
#3
Renee finally gets to reflect on her time at the GCPD, which is interesting. She still has some respect for Maggie and Gordon, but Bullock is dead to her.
Divorce! This is a really good divorce moment. Back in 52, she pushed Kate away for the exact same reasons - old habits die hard.
#4
Tot continues to be my fave despite not doing much. He's perpetually hanging out and begrudgingly helping.
"We're not friends." Two pages later handing her a hat he made in case she gets cold.
Myra...
The newscast says Myra was "elected for a third consecutive term last fall", which I think means she's been mayor for nine years unless some American mayoral terms last different lengths? I'd have guessed it had been longer, but it's not an unreasonably short timeline.
I'm so glad Renee goes back to Hub City. The Question isn't a mantle that carries a lot of recognition, but it does have a history beyond what it meant to Vic and Tot, and I'm glad there's this closure.
Izzy's more Gordon-y than the last time we saw him, but hey it's been almost a decade and it's good for the parallels.
#5
It's important to me that she's funny. She's learned how to go with the flow and take things in stride, and that means saying dumb shit even when she's actively in danger.
This fight is drawn so well. The dialogue wouldn't land nearly as well if it wasn't for the pacing.
This all works so well to flesh out who Renee was, who she is now, and where she might be going.
The Montoya Journal
Not a comic, but some supplementary pieces, because the secret code in the scriptures was too subtle and the way to get people to notice it was to send out secret journals with props. Pictures of the contents are included with commentary in the back of the trade.
Here's a link to some archived posts about the contents, if you don't have a copy, including a link to the song.
The fake band has a MySpace page and an actual song you can listen to. There are designs for in-universe newspapers and messaging apps. The physical journals came with bullet casings. The commitment here is ridiculous.
Only sixteen journals were ever made and I want one so badly.
Final Crisis #1
More events. I'm getting sick of events.
Something something Darkseid. I don't know what's going on with most of these characters and I don't really care.
#3
Getting arrested by... I think these guys are like Checkmate?
Final Crisis: Revelations #1
This is the part of Final Crisis that's relevant to Renee.
Crispus has been having the worst time since we last saw him.
#2
What if your dead best friend turned into the personification of God's wrath and tried to murder you about it after you'd spent years dealing with your Catholic guilt over being a lesbian. Would that be fucked up or what.
#3
The DC universe has some truly wild theological problems.
Is this blasphemous? Should I like. Put some kind of content warning on this?
I don't know if this is that good but it's very dramatic.
#4
Renee kicks Cain in the face.
The Radiant talks theology and the problem of free will and prophecy.
It's a Lot.
#5
Renee hits the combined might of Darkseid and Vandal Savage with a "I know you are but what am I?" and it works so well it allows her to restore Crispus' faith in God. I love comics.
Final Crisis #3-7
I've decided I don't actually care enough to do these individually. Renee gets recruited by Checkmate because she's so good at both cop stuff and superhero stuff that she should lead the charge into another universe. Cool? Good for her?
Captain Marvel tells her not to swear and she says no.
Wow that sure was a Crisis. Anyways.

What language do the characters in your country speak, and are there any other languages that your characters interact with?
ahh, excellent question !
my original conception was that uspana exists in a universe that is entirely separate from ours, so there would be no real-world languages and also no similish bc it's silly to me personally (but, ofc, it exists in the same world as other simblr countries, so that's not solid facts now). anyway, i would compare uspanian as a language family to some sort of cross between varieties of mexican spanish and nahuatl. BUT i'm not enough of a linguistics nerd (or much at all) to get into the weeds of what that means, lmao. i draw inspiration from nahuatl words for place names' spelling / pronunciation, so i try to keep that consistent, alongside what i imagine the rhythm / melody / auditory quality of uspanian would be. i think spanish, esp in latin america, is beautiful to hear, so that's one reason why i associate it. since languages encode worldviews, i'm pretty sure uspanian is gender neutral and distinguishes between animate / inanimate.
in practice, i think it's more of a language family because there are so many geographically distinct areas that would've likely had their own dialects or related but technically separate languages. most likely what happened is that the house of tecuani rose to power some seven centuries ago, made their version of uspanian the language of state business, and it's achieved a sort of parallel hegemony over time. by the twentieth century, children learn to read standard uspanian in school, it's the dominant variety in every urban center, and foreigners who learn the language abroad learn this one. that being said, there are surely rural areas where another variety is the most commonly spoken, although i think almost every version of uspanian is understandable to people who are generally fluent. so, there are ... let's say something like four or five discrete versions of uspanian with similar grammatical structures, and they each have a handful of dialects unto themselves.
i don't know who the neighboring countries are at this point, but i would assume their languages would be the ones uspanians tend to acquire. the education system emphasizes multilingualism, although i don't think uspana is a place that has a remarkable ton of linguistic diversity (outside of its own indigenous language family). i can imagine a nineteenth / twentieth-century struggle against homogenizing uspanian itself or maintaining a hierarchy among the varieties and dialects, but i think its place as the "official language" is uncontested.

Bars/Bartending AU Masterlist
A Little Too Close for Comfort (ao3) - helplessly_nonstop sam/bucky T, 1k
Summary: Sam and Bucky work at Stark's Bar and usually the regulars will flirt with Bucky. Sam is okay with that. But a new patron decides to get a bit too handsy and Nat sends Sam to save him... not that Bucky needs the help. This marks off my Bartender/Bouncer AU square!
B is for Bartender (ao3) - VenusDoom3 steve/bucky E, 5k
Summary: "Well," Bucky says, his tone low and brimming with promise, "you won't really know if you're into guys unless you try it."
Steve swallows hard, his eyes flicking to Bucky's mouth. "As in... try what?"
"Tell you what." Bucky reaches across the bar and cups Steve's jaw, ghosting the pad of his thumb over Steve's full, red lips. Steve quivers. "I was thinking about shutting down early tonight. If you'll give me ten minutes to close up, I'll take you upstairs to my place and let you try whatever the hell you want." ** Or, the AU in which Bucky is a bartender who offers Steve service with much more than a smile.
Brooklyn Boys (ao3) - Swietek93 steve/natasha E, 11k
Summary: Steve and Nat are sarcastic idiots who roll their eyes a lot and can’t see what’s right in front of them.
-Or-
Natasha and Steve are attracted to each other but are too dense to admit it. Cue sexual tension, ridiculous flirting, pining, and some jealousy.
Eyes Lock and It's Over (ao3) - fallingfromthestars steve/tony T, 1k
Summary: “Do you want to open a tab?” Tony asks, almost yells because of the music.
“Depends, will you take care of us tonight?” The man asks as a grin spreads across his face. The smile is kind, but his eyes are deceiving it. They are dark (and it’s not just the lighting) deep and blown with lust.
Fairytale Bar (ao3) - cryptidpoet bucky/peter M, 3k
Summary: Peter has played with gods, tricksters, magicians, and witches. He’s stood next to geniuses and monsters, has himself become a monster. He’s dipped his toes into other worlds, other universes, parallel universes. He believes in a lot of things. Impossible things. Unrealistic things. Beautiful, tragic, cruel things.
But he doesn’t believe in fairytales.
Feel Something (ao3) - orphan_account steve/bucky T, 5k
Summary: Some people just never find anybody that they fall deeply in love with. They wander through life grasping for the right person.
Bucky Barnes is a bartender at the Blue Note Lounge. He is scared that he'll never find his soulmate.
goddamn professional (ao3) - mwestbelle steve/bucky E, 3k
Summary: In which Bucky is a beefy stripper and Steve is a hipster bartender at the club with a crush. (Involves fewer stripper tropes than you probably hope)
Hey, Bartender, Pour ‘Em Hot Tonight (ao3) - emphasisonem steve/bucky M, 22k
Summary: In which Bucky is a bartender and Steve is immediately smitten. He's not the only one.
Keep You Warm (ao3) - ineachplace steve/bucky E, 7k
Summary: “You ever gonna stop fussin’ over me and get yourself a girl?”
Bucky’s face goes soft for a minute. It’s why Steve says it. To see the lines in his forehead smooth out. Sometimes he feels a strange urge to kiss him. Like he’s just so full of affection for him that it’s the only way to show it.
Steve knows it’s ridiculous. Knows it doesn’t mean what it sounds like it means. But sometimes, he wants it anyway. Regardless.
Kiss the Cook (ao3) - mambo steve/bucky, peggy/angie, maria/sam T, 28k
Summary: Former Top Chef contestant Steve Rogers opens a restaurant with his best friend, Sam Wilson.
And everything is great, except for Steve's giant crush on their new bartender.
Miracles Don't Happen Here (ao3) - zombified419 loki/tony, phil/pepper M, 105k
Summary: Tony finds himself in a new bar that he normally wouldn't ever frequent. After being rescued by Captain America, he finds himself drawn back to the location that witnessed one of his lowest points - and a cunning new bartender. [FrostIron] (Humor/Romance/Drama) Now completed!
Pour the Guinness (ao3) - buckybarnesdeservestobehappy (hutchabelle), lyn7 steve/bucky, pepper/tony E, 21k
Summary: Bucky’s a bartender at Stars and Bars, the coolest nightclub in Brooklyn. He’s excellent at his job, so he’s often called in when someone else misses a shift. Irritated he has to work on his scheduled night off, he’s pleasantly surprised when one patron makes his sacrifice worth it. Shy, handsome Steve Rogers is the best tipper Bucky’s ever met, but he wants something much different. Unfortunately, Steve’s hiding something, and Bucky’s not prepared when the secret comes to light, especially when he’s got one of his own.
Shaken (ao3) - glittercake sam/bucky G, 13k
Summary: Sam Wilson runs a small, independent investigative firm with his college friend Steve.
He's renowned for solving and uncovering just about anything that lands on his desk until random strangers start disappearing in his city. With only a hunch and an address, he heads to a dingy dive bar downtown for answers.
What he finds is so much more than he bargained for.
The Sherwood Lounge (ao3) - msraven clint/phil M, 10k
Summary: Everything about the place entices you to settle in and stay a while, to linger over good drinks and good conversation.
A bartender!Clint AU with bonus artist!Phil
Untouchable (ao3) - AvoidingAverage steve/bucky E, 43k
Summary: It's been eight years since Bucky Barnes left Steve standing alone and heartbroken. Eight years since Steve confessed his feelings and shared a kiss that left him aching for the impossible. Eight years since Bucky Barnes abandoned him to take up the mantle of his step-father's mob, Hydra.
Now, Steve's carefully rebuilt world is threatening to collapse again when he finds himself on a list of 'Untouchable People' in their neighborhood. Anyone who harms Steve Rogers will find themselves the target of a new, vicious mafia leader--the Winter Soldier.
(Or, the AU where Bucky tries to protect Steve by threatening violence on anyone who hurts him and inadvertently leads him into a world of mob violence, Interpol raids, and an overthrow of Alexander Pierce. )
Well, this is awkward (ao3) - Saturning harley/peter E, 5k
Summary: Peter and Harley hooked up at a bar some night. Then on other nights, too. Three months later, Tony introduces them, so they could work on avenger‘s tech projects together and maybe become friends.
Well, this is awkward. How are they supposed to tell Tony?

Albatross Elseworld Notes
Civil War GG Albatross: The basics seem pretty clear— Clipper ship captain Colin Rodgers, Intrepid Victorian Lady Naturalist Lora Saunders, Steampunk gadgeteer Kurt Burdett, etc. The hardest thing might be coming up with an excuse to have them in the United States interacting with the rest of the Golden Generation who would be more directly involved in the war. Interestingly, Colin would be among the first generation of British colonists born in New Zealand and would probably think of himself as British. (And in any earlier AUs he probably would just be British.)
Albatross 1886: Not all that much different from the above except that it’s peacetime and we could actually do a plot set at the America’s Cups of that era and have Riptide be a robber baron’s spoiled son. Maybe this one is more outright Steampunk whereas the previous was straightforwardly “historical but with superheroes”.
Golden Age Albatross: Just works as a pre-WWII sailor in the final days of sailing barques, had his origin in the Southern Ocean as usual, lots of WWII-set adventures in the Pacific Theatre, maybe regarded as more of a New Zealand patriotic hero. Colin might have a full beard as a “stereotypical seadog”. Lora could be a scientist/spy lady working for the British government who’s his official contact. (Thankfully this is a modern comic so Joey and Tori would be depicted with a lot more sensitivity than we might expect for Māori characters in an actual Golden Age comic.) Silver Age Albatross: This is actually the hardest, with the first famous single-handers and the OSTAR and Golden Globe Race, Colin could have his origin as a sport sailor in the late Silver Age, but he’d be a “debuting during the mid-late 60s” character, not a 50s-into-60s character. (It’s not that ocean racing didn’t exist, there were transatlantic and transpacific races, the Sydney-Hobart is just the only example anywhere near the Southern Ocean IIRC.) I almost wonder if his origin might be altered to be more “scientific” rather than magical, as with the Silver Age versions of Green Lantern, Hawkman, etc— given weather control powers by an accident with a weather control machine? Could have his mustache and long hair (but not quite a mullet) in a hippie-like look, or be clean-cut if the emphasis is on him as a scientist. FIORE definitely get to shine, since this is the era of superscience and enthusiasm for “the conquest of inner space!” There would probably be a lot of comics about fighting giant monsters created by pollution.
Bronze/Iron/Dark Age Albatross: With his superhero debut in in-universe 1982, standard Albatross IS a Bronze/Iron Age character (but not particularly dark.)
Frozen Mana Now/“If the Golden Generation Started Today” Albatross: This is pretty easy— “the last edition of the Race before the current one” moves Colin’s accident up to the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race, and the boats, gear, and technology change accordingly, but broadly things follow the same lines as his usual 1980s history. Instead of a direct parallel to Peter Blake, Colin could be someone inspired and perhaps mentored by him or a fictional counterpart. He might have a mustache or beard in the currently-fashionable styles. Instead of coincidentally resembling Peter Burling despite being based on other, earlier people, Kurt is probably a direct parallel.

Currently, the world is standing at the brink of a nuclear war with the extent of the danger not seen since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. Russians attacked Europe's biggest nuclear power plant situated in Ukraine, which has now raised concerns about another nuclear disaster that could strike the world soon. This came just days after the Russian president put his nuclear forces on high alert. In parallel, US president Joe Biden had a State of the Union address and spoke about each and every issue at length, but he did not utter a single word about the looming nuclear disaster that could be the end of humanity. The United States has been avoiding direct military confrontation with Russian forces during the Russia-Ukraine crisis, which certainly is a good thing to do to avoid escalation. However, turning a blind eye to an imminent nuclear disaster is a horrifying and unimaginable thing.   Historical threats about nuclear dangers are being ignored badly Global leaders took the statement of the father of the nuclear bomb, stating that "Now I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds" lightly. He reiterated the words of Bhagavad Gita, and these words cannot become more relevant today. Similarly, Albert Einstein claimed that "narrow nationalism" could not contain the basic power of the universe. He decried that without global awareness and the arousing interests of people of the world, it would become impossible to save the world from disaster. And now the world is nearer to realizing this danger. Rich politicians will hide in doomsday bunkers if a nuclear war ever erupts, and the general public will be left to die. Over time, both the United States and Russia fancied nuclear weapons to the extent that their occupation is now considered an achievement. China is joining the course but is still far away from competing with Russia and America in nuclear weapons in absolute numbers. When Albert Einstein assumed that informed citizenry would choose life and not death, he was pointing out that the general public may unite to oppose the very existence of the weapons of mass destruction. However, he ignored some basic constants in human nature that it always strives for power, even if it means death. Now the same general population is reluctant to ask their leaders to denounce nuclear weapons. Even if a country decides to make a significant cut to its nuclear inventory, it can easily seem like an unpopular decision. Conservatives belonging to nuclear countries would prefer death over life any day if they are given a choice of having no nuclear power or death. Israel, North Korea, India, Pakistan are the countries where nuclear politics have become a popular discourse. However, if the world was to get rid of nuclear weapons, the US and Russia would have to take the lead, as these two countries hold more than 90 percent of global nuclear weapons.   How the United States helped the nuclear escalation of the world The United States has often touted bringing nuclear justice into the world and does not let any other country get these weapons. However, its own actions at home tell a miserable story. Almost twenty years ago, George W. Bush withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM), signifying that the US had no plans to curb its nuclear inventory. Irony died when the same person invaded Iraq, falsely accusing them of nuclear weapons, thus committing war crimes. Barack Obama followed suit, and in his bid to "modernize" the US nuclear weapons, he initiated a $1.7 trillion program. Donald Trump walked the same path and pulled America out of Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty, once again paving the way to increase the nuclearization of Europe. All of these presidential actions were followed by America's continuous assertiveness in expanding NATO to Russian borders, which was bound to bring disaster.   Final Thoughts Over time, NATO has established that it
is a defensive alliance, but its continuous posture of lt expanding to near the Russian borders, coupled with the subsequent attempts by all presidents to escalate American nuclear arsenals to Russian borders, is surely a poor approach if American leadership wants to de-escalate on the nuclear ladder.

#Top anime studio 9 creations series#
Where Brotherhood excels lies in the sensitivity it expresses for every one of the characters’ fighting for their desires and contending with their mistakes, with particular highlights for the plights of minorities and women. It’s not your classic military drama, though, as Ed and Alphonse quickly learn how far Amestris’ authoritarianism stretches. The show’s emotional core revolves around the plight of the Elric brothers, Ed and Alphonse, two alchemists sponsored by the authoritarian Amestris military. Brotherhood is just the right length, never overstaying its welcome and proving how versatile and malleable the conventions of shounen anime can be.īrotherhood has a sizeable cast of characters all of different nationalities and ideologies, with motivations that often oppose one another-the show manages to use these moving forces to form factions, alliances, and foils that flow in multiple directions, paralleling the often messy, always chaotic nature of human relationships during wartime. What’s more, the show is paced perfectly, with neatly wrapped arcs that lead into each other and bolster a greater global narrative on selected themes.
#Top anime studio 9 creations series#
A more faithful adaptation to Hiromu Arakawa’s mega-popular manga series than the original adaptation, Brotherhood contends with loss, grief, war, racism and ethics in mature and unique ways, ahead of its time in nearly every aspect. Watch On: Crunchyroll, VRV, Funimation, HBO Max, Netflixįor many, Brotherhood is the essential anime experience, and it’s easy to see why. It is a masterwork that should justly rank among the best works of television of all time, let alone anime. It feels like a magnum opus produced at the pinnacle of a long career despite being, almost unbelievably, Watanabe’s first series as a director. It’s an original property, not an adaptation. Yoko Kanno’s magnificent, jazz-heavy soundtrack and score stand on their own. It’s accessible to new hands and still rewards old-timers with every repeated watch. Its 26-episode run was near-perfect, and episodes that might have served as filler in another series are tight, taut, and serve the show’s thesis even as they do not distract from its overarching plot, which is compelling but not overbearing. Its English dub, boasting some of America’s greatest full-time voiceover talents, somehow equals the subtitled Japanese-language original. The future it presents is ethnically diverse and eerily prescient. Its characters are complex and flawed, yet still ooze cool. Its existential and traumatic themes are universally relatable. Its particular blend of cyberpunk intrigue, Western atmosphere, martial arts action, and noir cool in seinen form is unmatched and widely appealing. Cowboy BebopĮvery debate over whether or not Cowboy Bebop-Shinichiro Watanabe’s science-fiction masterpiece-is the pinnacle of anime is a semantic one. We hope you find something you’ll fall in love with. Our list is carefully curated with both accessible and challenging titles, a perfect landing pad for anime newcomers looking to dive headlong into shows that are essential, strange, or soothing. The world of animation is constantly evolving, and we want to evolve with it. In these anime, almost everyone can be seen in some way, whether it be in the rosy meditations of a slice-of-life show or the bombast of thrilling action. Shows both young and old are represented, with at least one show for everyone no matter their age, gender, or sexuality. These anime are great, and you’ll find many of the expected takes on this list, but in compiling this I tried to consider every genre’s most exemplary offerings. Prestige anime is often centered around a man and his struggles, themes that often disclude varied viewers and create an echo chamber of impenetrable, inarguable taste for fans to discuss. I’ve long enjoyed shoujo for its florid style and high melodrama, but when I thought of anime that deserved to be on a list of the best ever, only shows with male protagonists came to mind. Working on this list allowed me to examine my own taste and the sort of aesthetic that guides me. So why is it that lists like this leave out anime made by women, for women? And why can’t these anime be enjoyed by men, too? Hobbyists and fandoms have long had distinctive, individualized communities, lively groups that often do not intersect except, maybe, at anime conventions, given over half of North America’s attendees are female. With lists like this, diverse demographics are often left unconsidered, effectively sidelining female and LGBT viewers. At Paste, we believe there’s an anime for everyone.
