Surviving Summer : Season 2

It was again a really nice season, even thought the "bad guys" were a bit too obvious.

I was expecting that Ari would have least explore more her relationship to Baxter, because he was a nice character and he even made a board for her.

We still don't know who's Summer's father is? Even if he was mentioned here this time.

Hoping to see more Baxter and Marlon next season.

Here is the original brief description I wrote: "Born and bred to fly the stars, Nico is a former Imperial civilian pilot now seeking his fame and fortune as an independent astro-aviator." I loved Rogue One, and took some inspiration from the character of Bohdi Rook. To me, he did not seem like he was in the Imperial Navy, but I know the movie wasn't very clear.  To me he seemed like how in the real world there are people who work for the government and with the military, but are not IN the military themselves.  So, I took that idea and had that he went to a galactic equivalent of the Merchant Marine Academy and then worked as a civilian pilot for the Empire for a term. I added some elements to the Wroonian culture (since it is pretty bare bones anyway), a being called "The Kestral of Life".  The Kestral is something that perhaps used to be an aspect of a religion or a belief system for Wroonians in ages past, but now is just something that has barely any meaning.  I was coming from the angle how in the real world many people have crosses or crucifixes in their house or on a necklace, but they really just do it because its always been done in their family.  So, for modern Wroonians, it is simply a traditional or cultural symbol, something worn or hung on a wall that is just done without too much meaning. Nicuzzal "Nico" Vyzeem grew up with this symbol, and sure he wore it as a pendant on a necklace most of his life, but like most Wroonians he didn't believe it was real.  That is until he was persuaded that the myth and symbol was inspired by something real, that there really is a being called The Kestral of Life.  The intentional misspelling of Kestrel was supposed to indicate it was not a little bird from our real world, it was really a being of great power, more like the Phoenix or one of the large SW space beings or perhaps even an aspect of the Force, and if you found it The Kestral would grant you your heart's desire.  Within the game (as I am sure most of you who play know) there is part of the character creation process called "Obligation" and "Motivation", so I tied both of these into The Kestral myth for Nico.  However, I told my GM this is simply what Nico believes, it doesn't mean its true.  At various times in the game, my character lied to everyone in order to find more clues as to how to find The Kestral of Life. I played this character in a campaign that lasted nearly 2 years. We started off with 3 players then moved to 5, and we had a lot of fun, despite feeling frustrated much of the time due to the story.  We started with the original 3 being crew on a tramp freighter, and while the Captain was a smuggler, he was also part of a larger syndicate of criminals/pirates whose main bread and butter was slavery.  Our PCs didnt know that to start, but we soon learned as we became patsies in a scheme the Captain had with an ISB agent, and we were left in jail while the Captain got let go and split the earnings with the ISB dude. This had us behind bars while the larger slavery-pirate syndicate moved in and started snatching people in the little town where the local Marshall had us imprisoned.  Since it was just him and one deputy, we convinced him to let us go and we would help defend the town. While we made a difference, we didn't save everyone.  Our little group then promised we would do what we could to find and rescue those kidnapped.  The town gave us a busted up Barloz, and we fixed it up and off we went with no credits other than what they collected when they "passed the hat"; we named our ship Dressen's Triumph.  The whole campaign for nearly 2 years was trying to track and rescue the townsfolk.

Summary: Cassian Andor is forced to tell the rest of Rogue One to return to Yavin IV without him and Jyn when they come under fire during the Rebel bombing. Having failed to save her father and failing in his own mission, Cassian finds himself being hunted on all sides.

Chapter One

The problem wasn't the Alliance bombs. Or the endless rain. Or even the Storm Troopers patrolling the area. The biggest problem that Captain Cassian Andor was suffering from right now was the fact that Jyn Erso was straddling him with a blaster pressed against his cheek and trying to decide if she was going to shoot him point blank or make him suffer even more for what he had done.

He had not put up much of a fight really. After the Alliance had destroyed the platform and Director Krennic escaped, he was forced to call to K-2 and tell him to get out off world. Bohdi and K-2 had Baze and Imnuit- they would return to Yavin IV and Cassian would have to find a way off the planet on his own. But he couldn't leave her. He couldn't leave Jyn.

He had forced her down the ridge but the water had become so high that it was starting to flood and without a second thought, she shoved him into the raging river. He had reached out to save himself and accidentally grabbed her, tugging her into the water with him.

After being swept down a few miles, they both managed to get a hold of some fallen trees and scramble to safety, a cave nearby being a shelter. But the water had washed away his blaster and he was defenseless when she had pulled her own against him. But there was no way he was going to fight her. Not now. Not ever. If she wanted to shoot him, he was going to let her.

He had failed her. He had his excuses, but he knew that they weren't going to work. Since he had met Jyn, he had been unable to think straight. His usual survival instincts had been completely replaced with whatever feelings were bubbling to the surface that he had not yet been able to identify.

"You killed him!" she said, pressing the blaster against his head, shaking. Jyn had more rage against the universe than anyone he had ever met and it seemed that her rage against the Empire was being temporarily rerouted towards him.

"You... You were supposed to save him!"

"That wasn't my mission," he said, no point in lying about it. "But if you recall- I disobeyed my orders!"

"The Alliance killed him- you knew that they were coming!"

"I didn't know!" he insisted, defending himself that much. He had figured that the reason for the attack was because they had crashed and had been uanble to communicate to that point. The general probably got nervous and didn't want to lose to opportunity to kill Galen Erso.

She was shaking so violently that he wasn't sure if it was because she was cold or if it was because she was angry. Probably both.

"If you're going to shoot- do it quickly, I'd rather die fast."

He'd rather not die at all, but this was the one instance where he was going to have to let it go. He was not going to be able to bring himself to hurt her. He wasn't going to fight her at all. So it was better for her to get her feelings out now and not waste time. They were still in enemy territory. The Empire was going to be sweeping through here sooner rather than later.

"You... You sent the ship away."

"Like you said- the message was important. Everyone heard it so they are going to tell the Council."

He looked skeptical that they were going to believe it.

"You don't think they'll listen?" she demanded and he looked up at her. It was still dark out but there was just enough sliver of light from the lights in the facility in the distance that he could make out her form and she looked worried, not angry. That would mean her father died for nothing. That this entire mission was a failure. That getting Bodhi back, losing Saw, everything was for nothing.

"We have no proof, Jyn, don't be naïve. They were never going to believe it, even if we brought Galen to them. We're talking about a weapon that no one has ever even heard of before- I doubt they even could comprehend what we saw on Jedha."

He barely understood it himself and he had been there. That thing was terrifying. It was a true weapon to end all wars. Even if they believed that it was real, he doubted that the Rebel Alliance was going to just decide to actually attempt to destroy it. The Death Star was a weapon on a whole other level.

She slowly lifted her gun from his face.

"You think that they would give up on destroying it?"

"I don't think they'd even consider it," he said truthfully, turning and looking at her. The rain was pouring down outside of the cave and he was unsure of what she could possibly be thinking.

"That's not good enough."

She sat back a little and then looked out of the mouth of the cave.

"We have to get to the Death Star plans, no matter what it takes."

Easier said than done- they were without comms, they were on an Imperial planet and the only weapon they currently had was Jyn's blaster and he doubted that she was going to let him use that anytime soon. She slowly looked down on him.

"Get up," she said and moved to stand, Cassian slowly sitting up and waiting for her to decide what to do. There were only two options for her. She could kill Cassian here and now and get rid of him as a dead weight. Or she would have to force him to aid her at gunpoint because she doubted that since their missions were so misaligned right now, he might not want to help her at all.

He was going to have to go with a different option.

"I'll help you escape to Yavin IV and reuinted with the others, you can do whatever you want to me after that."

She had considered shooting him. Blowing up Yavin IV. Destroying the universe. But her father's words were ringing in her ears. She needed to destroy the Death Star. Even if that meant she was going to have to work with someone she wanted to kill more than anyone else in the entire universe. She looked down at Cassain.

"Get up."

The choice was easy for her but for Cassian, he was certainly in quite a predicament.

He got to his feet and they headed to the mouth of the cave. The fires from the facility were easy to see from this distance.

"Walk," she said, looking at him and waited until he went in front of her. She was right to be cautious, they were technically enemies right now. He headed away from the facility and moved through the rocky gorge, trying to be careful not to fall back into the water. The rain pouring down made it hard to hear, especially with the occasional explosion behind them. Jyn was right, the Rebels certainly made a big mess this time around. Things were only going to escalate from here on out.

They made their way through the ridge and into open territory. He was reminiscent of his days on Aldani. He turned to look at Jyn.

"We need to find a ship."

Just as he said that, the sound of tie fighters screaming in the distance made him really wish they were still back at that cave. Well shit, things certainly weren't going well today at all. Without thinking about it, he reached out and grabbed Jyn's arm, flinging her forward and they started running down the ridge, trying to head for the tree line in the distance where they could hide. The rocks and the rain made everything hard and they both slipped and slid down the ridge, finally making it to the tree line just as a Tie Fighter started to run down the ridge looking for signs of life. He pressed low to the ground and waited, Jyn forced to watch in silence. The fighter didn't wait long and moved on quickly, but it was enough to force them to stay put for the night. Things were only going to get worse from here on out. And with her blaster in hand, she made it clear that he should probably sleep with one eye open.

A/N: I had not written or published a single fanfic since 2019 but I read this and I went feral, I have no idea how long this will be but I will not be stopped.

Ok, I’m going to try to explain something I haven’t quite figured out how to put into words.... in terms of Star Wars characters, Cassian Andor has arrived as one of the Big Ones. In a big way. 

What do I mean by a Big One? Beats me! No, no... just kidding. Let me try to articulate it...

You could say “Of course he’s a Big Character, he has his own show and was the co-lead of a film.” Yes. But I mean this more in the sense of thinking of Star Wars as a myth/legend. 

In Rogue One, Cassian is a very skilled intelligence agent who lives in the gray. He’s clearly been through some shit, but we don’t know what. Rarely has that “what” been so emotionally and thematically rich. Andor has fully realized Cassian as a complex but ultimately selfless hero. It’s been such a thrill to watch. 

When the series began, I would say Cassian was a Mid character. Interesting, played by a compelling actor, but not one I was going to buy posters or a Funko Pop of.  I still felt this way in the early stretch of episodes. But after the Narkina 5 arc, Cassian has leveled up. 

I still can’t convey what I mean by a Big One. It just feels like he’s stepped into Legendary status to join the company of Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, Lando, Vader, Obi-Wan, Padmé, Ben, Rey, Finn and Poe. Yoda. Mace. And the droids. And Mando and Grogu. And Ahsoka. 

Maybe Ahsoka is a good parallel here. For me, I found her annoying at first (which I now realize was intentional). By Season 2, she was a more enjoyable character but I wasn’t exactly thrilled when arcs were focused on her. 

Then, suddenly in Season 3 of The Clone Wars I watched Ahsoka survive being hunted by Trandoshans and said to myself “holy shit...I love this character.” 

That’s how I feel about Cassian now. Not that I didn’t like him or care about him before. But now I know so much about him and what he went through that his story makes me genuinely emotional. 

I don’t want to discount the other characters in Rogue One... I have deep affection for Jyn, Bohdi (especially Bohdi), Chirrut, Baze, and K2... but now, Cassian is simply on another level from them. 

Like most Star Wars fans, I had little to no expectations for this show. How amazing that it’s not only the best Star Wars live action series, but one of the best shows of the year.

FIRST BEHIND THE SCENES WIP THING

ALRIGHT so i've been talking big talk about doing BTS and WIP shit, so here the fuck we go!!! Trying out a little fun piece in a major key since I'm a sad bitch and all I ever write seems to be in either a microtonal key I can't identify or a variation of C minor, D minor, A minor, a lydian mode, or a random pentatonic scale walk-around. This one's in 'ol basic something major. I dunno I didn't do no fuckin' fancy music theory classes.

SO OUT COMES DIGITALIS AS USUAL BECAUSE NOTHING ELSE GETS THAT CRUNCHY DIGITAL SOUND LIKE THOSE ABBERANT DSP BOYS (shoutout btw I genuinely love digitalis and I also use Sketch Cassette far more than I should for that saturation and wobble)

HOW DOES BOHDIE SOUND DESIGN?

I'm gonna make a whole series of posts dedicated to just sound design at some point because BOY do I love just Fucking around with knobs and dials and buttons and claiming I have a profession. Shaping a sound into something I want it to be is kinda easy for me personally. How it usually goes is something like

Take a sound that is a good basis for the end product. Doesn't have to sound even anything like it, it could just have some of the elements you want. EG for this track I needed something organic and familiar sounding to start off with, as the end result I wanted to get was something familiar, yet warped and destroyed

Determine what you want to turn the sound into. Ideally this comes before even step one, but we'll ignore that

(here's the fun bit) GO FUCKING NUTS WITH PLUGINS. if you have outboard stuff that can achieve the same result, though, USE THAT. I just bought two (2) tape players/recorders on the cheap (more about what I'm using those for in another post one day)

TO CONCLUDE

Rounding out my insane ramblings on this post, I'm gonna mention the instrumentation, plugins, and other miscellaneous stuff in case you're interested: Mainly used Baby Audio's BA-01 synth, that goes for the bass tracks, pad and melody (although not the sub bass I used a built-in 808 for that) Plugins, as mentioned, a lot of Digitalis for digitising the cool organic, not-quite-there voices, as well as Deelay for the delay, RC-20 to add some flutter and noise, and a built in EQ and compression for light initial mixing. Boring stuff tbh :(

Mara's breath is visible in the cold climate of his realm, adding even more fog to the dreary atmosphere as rain patters down upon the rocks and makes the ash melt into a sludge like substance that ingrains itself deep into the fabric of his clothing. Mara's cloak drags heavily against the wet ground as he walks towards the gate between the realms, his cold blue eyes peering through the golden bars at the beauty that lies within. Bohdi's realm is perfect as always, bright, sunny, flowers growing everywhere you look and animals running to and fro throughout the fields. Mara often comes to watch the gate like this, to observe the things he'll never get to have. It's his own burden to know that his mere presence could destroy the beauty of Bohdi's garden, no matter how much Bohdi tries to make friends with him and include him in his activities. While Mara could always leave, go and explore, see the worlds, he binds himself to his own desolate realm because of his curse, as he would rather be alone here then hated elsewhere. A bunny spirit, one from a young rabbit that probably simply made the mistake of crossing into his realm at one point, stands by his feet at the gate, peering in at the other bunnies that run and frolic in the garden, alive and happy. The spirit makes a soft squeaking sound, but none of the other rabbits respond. Mara is the only one who can see or hear the spirit. The bunny seems rather dejected at being ignored, and it makes Mara feel bad for the thing. It was an innocent rabbit that had done no wrong, but had simply been in the wrong place. It was probably meant to live a nice life with the other rabbits on Bohdi's garden, but now it's left to roam this wasteland for eternity all because of Mara. Sure the God hadn't meant to do it, but it was still undoubtedly his fault. This makes Mara feel quite bad about himself..
