Desi Pubs in Cambridge | The Rise of Healthy Eating Options at Desi Pubs
Pubs are changing tremendously from their previous connotation of heavy comfort food and fatty drinks. In pubs, the hospitality industry is witnessing a shift towards healthier menu options, focusing on vegetarian and low-calorie options. Not influenced only by personal taste in food, this trend reflects a more significant societal movement towards health and mindful eating. This article explores the creative strategies used by pub owners, looks at the causes behind the increase in demand for healthier pub meals at Desi Pubs in Cambridge, and celebrates the delicious world of nutritional options that guests may enjoy.

Desi Pubs in Cambridge
The Evolution of Pub Food:
In the past, pubs were known for serving fatty food and various alcoholic beverages. Yet, bar-goers who are trying to watch what they eat are looking for tasty solutions that don't violate their diet plans. Since customers' tastes have changed, many restaurants and bars have revamped their menus to provide more nutritious options that appeal to a broader demographic.
Meeting Vegetarian Demand:
The increasing number of vegetarian alternatives has been one of the most noticeable trends in pub menus. Pubs are starting to pay attention to the growing percentage of vegetarians and flexible eaters by offering plant-based options that aren't an afterthought but substantial, fulfilling meals on their own. Vegetarians no longer have to settle for boring salads or spaghetti dishes; modern pubs provide creative, tasty vegetarian alternatives that entice even the most committed meat eaters.
Vegetarian pub cuisine is booming with ingenuity, from filling tacos with vegetables to burgers made with lentils. Pub chefs are dispelling stereotypes about vegetarian food by using a rainbow of colorful ingredients to create dishes that are as rich and fulfilling as those heavy on meat.
Low-Calorie Treats:
The increasing focus on health-conscious living has driven the demand for low-calorie pub options. Customers seek opportunities to maintain healthy eating while enjoying a night on the town. Pubs have responded by providing a variety of low-calorie dishes that are flavorful.
Steaming and grilling are two examples of current cooking techniques that help produce delicious and healthy food. These low-calorie options change people's perspective of pub cuisine, from grilled fish tacos with a tangy lime slaw to zucchini noodles with colorful vegetable stir-fries. The focus is on using high-quality ingredients and preparing them with care so customers can enjoy their meals without guilt.
Healthy Pub Eating Benefits:
There are a lot of advantages for customers and businesses alike as a result of the trend towards healthier pub offerings, which goes beyond just satisfying consumer demand. It implies additional options for shoppers to choose from that suit their tastes and help them achieve their health objectives. This way, they can still partake in the friendly pub culture without compromising their dedication to health.
Additionally, pubs that respond to people's developing preferences will likely see an increase in business from health-conscious consumers. It does double duty: it encourages patronage and brings in new customers, some of whom may have written off bars as unhealthy.
Regarding menu items, pubs can differentiate themselves from the competition by offering healthier options. It presents them as businesses that are aware of and able to accommodate shifting consumer preferences, and it lets them reach out to an expanding market of health-conscious individuals. By providing a wide variety of delicious and nutritious options, pubs can boost their reputation and improve everyone's eating experience.
Innovations and Challenges:
Although there is a growing demand for healthier pub options, some obstacles remain to overcome. People often worry that healthier options taste less good or provide less satisfaction. Pub chefs take this problem seriously, devoting resources to creating recipes that balance health advantages and flavors.
Also, it takes a lot of preparation and organization to get your hands on fresh, high-quality components for healthy meals. More and more pubs are forming ties with nearby farmers and suppliers to keep their menus sustainable.
Some bars are going over and beyond by creating healthier menu items that include international flavors and culinary trends. Pubs are diversifying their menus and offering healthier options to customers by incorporating flavors and techniques from Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean cuisines.
Desi Pub in Cambridge:
Our beloved Brook Pub is transforming into a Desi Pub, complete with mouthwatering Indian food, cocktails, and live entertainment. Even though there are probably a lot of bars in Cambridge, you might be surprised to encounter a Desi pub there. Thus, everyone in Cambridge may expect a really memorable new year in 2024. Make sure you don't pass up this opportunity to peruse the updated menu and sample some of the finest indian cuisine in Cambridge, close to Mill road.
In Conclusion:
A reflection of the ever-changing character of the hospitality sector is the shift in pub fare towards more healthful alternatives. Pubs are actively embracing change and meeting the different requirements of their customers, moving beyond the cliché of greasy pub grub. Vegetarian and low-calorie options are becoming increasingly popular, and pubs are jumping on the bandwagon to lead the way.
Pubs that see the importance of health and well-being and work to improve their offerings in this area are satisfying customers now and positioning themselves for future success. As a result, everyone wins: customers may have fun without sacrificing their health goals, and bars can prosper in a changing, health-conscious industry. You won't be caught off guard the next time you visit a pub because their menu offers various suitable alternatives for your taste buds and your health.

You know who it is, it's ya boy! 🕺
So. Obviously a crack fic, if anyone is wondering - no, I don't smoke pot, I'm just very stupid with dumb, but creative ideas, about Adam, Lute and the reader having a mission given to them from Sera, we're they have to got to the Earth in their human disguises (Of course Adam is just Adam without the mask and brown eyes, because Alex Brightman, fuck yeah) to do some business with some of the governments. What they didn't think of is the fact that when they got their human disguises, they also came with human traits, like being able to get absolutely hammered. Like for angels it would take a lot of alcohol (I'm looking at you Castiel when you drank a whole ass liquor store) to get drunk, but humans have a weaker immune system when it comes to percentages. So Adam the drunkest of them all getting the amazing idea of stealing a shopping cart, a little less drunk reader agreeing and them running off before Lute could stop them, Adam in the cart, reader pushing. In the end they accidentally drove off the sidewalk and launched themselves into the damn brook. Lute panicked before they emerged, laughing their asses off, Adam just started to glide his hands over his clothes as if he wanted to hand wash them. Here cue the meme:
-I'M WASHING ME AND MY CLOTHES
-He's drunk as fuck
-Biiitch, I'm washing me and my clothes 😌
With the "I'm washing me and my clothes" being Adam, "He's drunk as fuck" being Lute and the reader just floating in the water next to Adam wondering what the hell he was doing before catching the vibe and doing the same. Now imagine Sera just wanting to check on them and their progress through that orb in Heaven like during "You didn't know" 😂 Miss girl would face plam so hard her big ass lashes would fly off her face 😂😂😂
Tumblr media
Bro. Bro I adore you and I adore your fucking crack prompts, they're my new favorite thing to write. So here ya go babes
Drunk 'n' Nasty
pairing: Adam x male!reader
warnings: language, use of alcohol, yet another crack fic
note: not beta read bc fuck you I don't have beta readers
Lute grabbed your wrist and pulled you away from the bar entrance, Adam had already been grabbed by his shirt to keep him from entering the building. “No, Sera explicitly said that we need to get this over with as fast as possible,” the lieutenant spoke in a firm voice as she dragged both you and your husband away from the pub, “So we will finish the job and then straight up head back to heaven.”
You pounded at her, “You’re no fun, c’mon Lute just let us have one drink, in and out in no time.” But the exorcist shook her head and stood her ground, “No. One drink will lead to two and two drinks will lead to you and Adam getting completely wasted.” Adam wiggled out of her grip and slapped the hand she had wrapped around your wrist. Yes, Sera had given you orders, but where was the fun in having human disguises if you weren't able to enjoy the night on earth?
“Oh fucking quit it, danger tits, we all know it will end like that either way,” Adam groaned and rolled his eyes, “Loosen up, bitch.” Lute side eyed the first man critically but eventually gave in with a sigh. She wordlessly stepped aside so the two of you were able to enter the crowded bar and Adam dragged you inside before Lute was able to change her mind again. “Let’s fucking go,” the brunette cheered and sat down at the counter. He patted his thigh as his now brown eyes caught yours, “C’mere babes.” That he didn't need to tell you twice, you closed the small gab that was left between the two of you and sat down on his thigh as the first man ordered two shots of whiskey for the both of you, he knew Lute wouldn't drink, she appeared to be quite tense ever since the three of you had arrived on earth.
Once the drinks were put down in front of you, you immediately reached for the tiny shot glass and downed it in one go by tilting your head back, Adam's eyes were locked on your throat as he was able to see how you swallowed the liquid, a nasty grin appeared on his lips as he leaned in a little closer to you, “Fuck, how often will I get that view tonight?” “Depends,” you grinned back at him, the pleasant yet unusual burn of alcohol made you shiver slightly, “How often do ya wanna see it, pretty boy?” Adam leaned in even closer until his lips brushed softly against your ear and his hot breath hit your face, “I don't think I will ever get enough of it.” And with that he downed his own shot just to slam the empty glass on the counter and ask the bartender for another round.
“Sir,” Lute had managed to get through the crowd somehow and was now standing behind you, “That was your one shot, we'll leave now.” Adam looked at you, it was so weird to see the first man with dark brown eyes instead of bright golden ones, but it was something you could get used to, they seemed honest, not that his golden eyes were serving you lies but the brown orbs just felt different, more personal. “Lute, do us a fucking favor and find some dude who will pull that massive fucking stick outta your ass so we can enjoy ourselves for a little while,” your husband shared his opinion on Lute's behavior towards the both of you, then he turned around again to focus on the drinks on the counter. The first man raised his glass, you did the same and in union you purred, “To us.” Another shot was swallowed and you slowly felt your cheeks heating up because of the alcohol. Oh how you had missed the burning liquor.
“I will regret this,” Lute grumbled as the exorcist sat down on the stool next to you. Your eyes beamed at her and you were quick to order three cocktails, visibly happy that she had decided to join you. “Just because I'm sitting down doesn't mean I will drink with you, it's enough of a burden that you two are,” she hissed and eyed the neon pink drink suspiciously as it was placed in front of her. “Don’t be such a princess, it's just one drink,” Adam commented and pushed the pretty looking drink a little closer to Lute. She however, simply passed it to some chick that was passing by. And that was the moment you chose to ignore the woman for the rest of the evening. If she was fine with staying sober and doing as stupid fucking Sera said, so be it, you and Adam however had other plans.
It didn't really take long for the alcohol to actually punch you two in the face though, heaven offered no such things as alcohol, weed, crack or nicotine so the tolerance bar for Adam and you was basically on the floor. And that was probably part of the reason why the two of you had one hell of a blast running away from Lute.
And then Adam spotted the supermarket that wasn't too far away from the pub so he made quick work of picking you up bridal style and then he was on his way to investigate whatever it was that was going on there. “What now, big guy, are we taking off together? Away from stick-in-the-ass-Lute and go-fuck-yourself-Sera?” you chuckled as the brunette continued to carry you over to the empty parking lot. “Damn fucking right, babes,” Adam agreed. The taller man let you down once your destination was reached and he immediately saw something new he wanted to investigate.
The fucking shopping carts.
So you tagged along, mainly to make sure Adam wouldn't hurt himself but also because you were curious too. You weren't quite sure how, but somehow Adam had managed to disconnect the metal chain from the cart, the first man was pulling it away from the others and as soon as it stopped moving, he climbed in it to sit down, “What are you waiting for, bitch, fucking push me!” Adam pointed to the street.
Lute had just managed to catch up to you two drunken asses as you rushed past her. You pushed the shopping cart as fast as physically possible, “Fuck yeah,” Adam yelled and threw his fists in the air, that man was having the time of his life - or well, existence. Either way it was fun, you two were having fun.
Lute on the other hand regretted every single decision that had led her to his exact moment, if she could she would punch her past self for even agreeing to coming with you. Fuck what had she been thinking, that you two would take this serious for once? Yeah, dead fucking wrong.
It was all fun and games until you stumbled over your own feet, lost control of the cart and pushed it right into the brook that was besides the sidewalk you had been running on. Your alcohol clouded brain didn't even think of letting go and therefore you fell with Adam. Instead of being bummed about it, you thought of this as an upgrade though, because now you were floating on water.
“Adam look,” you called for your husband, “I’m floating.” Adam turned around in order to see what you were doing and chuckled at the sight. “‘m washin’ me ‘n’ my clothes,” the brunette explained what he was doing as he slid his hands all across his body, crumbling up his very wet clothes.
Lute had finally managed to fully catch up to you and just watched you with annoyance. “He’s drunk as fuck,” she grumbled, clearly talking to you but you simply shook your head violently, you somehow managed to get over to where Adam was washing himself and his clothes and helped him by sliding your hands all over his body too, “Bitch, we're washing him and his clothes.”
The brunette turned around to face you and poked your chest, “If you handsome bitch keep touching me like that I might just fuck you right here, right now,” the words he spoke were a little hard to understand die to the alcohol he had been drinking earlier. But hard to understand didn't mean impossible to understand, because as soon as your brain had processed the words your husband had spoken you pressed your entire body against his, your wet clothes clinging onto each other.
“Oh Lord have mercy,” Lute prayed as she covered her ears and turned around so that she wouldn't have to watch.
“Yeah? What's stopping you, big guy?” you were up for the challenge, if he wanted to fuck you right there, then he should get to do that. At least that's how you saw it.
Sera had a gut feeling that told her to check on the group and so she did. But what she saw was something she surely hadn't expected. Lute was standing on the sidewalk, the woman was still covering her ears and had squeezed her eyes shut in order to tune out what was happening behind her back.
Because Adam and you were standing in a brook, both fully naked. Sera immediately regretted what she had just done, she wanted to unsee what her eyes had been able to see. She stopped the transmission in an instant. That had simply been too much for her nerves, she had also made the decision to never address what was currently going down on earth.
Spoiler: Adam was going down on you.

Humans are weird: Urban legends Part 1: What lurks in the night
“What time is it?”
Zintal tore his gaze away from his drink and looked at his human friend. He had been convinced that Brooks had been in a coma until now after he had downed a pint of Teruziun Ale when they first arrived and he collapsed to the ground.   Some of the other patrons had laughed and propped him up in one of the waiting chairs while Zintal continued to enjoy the night.
Looking down at his watch, a strange human custom he had adopted since moving to the human world, he took note of the positioning of the hands.
“Half past midnight.” Zintal remarked as he took another sip of his drink. The bar was practically empty aside from them and the bartender who was wiping down several glasses and stacking them behind the counter.
“Oh shit.” Brooks murmured and tried to stand. He must have had some of the ale still in his system because he made it two steps before he fell to the ground.
“Someone’s in a hurry.” Zintal laughed as he finished his drink. He tossed a coin to the bar keep who caught it midair and then went to pick up his friend.
“We should have been gone an hour ago.” Brooks stammered as he tried to get back up but kept losing his balance. “We can’t be here after midnight.”
“You’re mommy say that?” Zintal chuckled as he helped Brooks up.
The first he knew something was wrong was how tightly his friend was grabbing his arm. Brooks was holding on to him like his life depended on it. It wasn’t just tightness either, but Zintal could feel their hands shaking as if he was afraid of something. A look in his friend’s eyes and Zintal saw that what his friend was saying was not the idle ramblings of a drunkard, but of a man who was genuinely afraid.
“Alright,” Zintal said in a calm voice as he took Brooks under one arm and together walked towards the door of the bar, “we’ll just call a transport vehicle and we will be home.”
“Jesus fucking Christ…” Brooks mumbled as they reached the door. “That’s not going to work.”
“Why?”
“Because everyone knows not to come here after midnight!” Brooks shouted back. “They know to stay the fuck away until the sun comes back up and it’s safe to come out!”
“Then why don’t we stay-“ Zintal began until he saw the bar keep placing a shotgun on the counter and shake his head slowly.
Zintal now felt a measure of fear himself. They were standing at the door to the pub yet his hands would not touch the handle leading outside.
“I need you to tell me why it is not safe outside.” Zintal spoke to Brooks. “What are you afraid of? Speak clearly to me.”
Some sense returned to Brooks as he wiped a hand across his face and slapped himself a few times. He pulled away from Zintal and regained his footing before answering his alien friend.
“There’s a story,” Brooks began, “about something that stalks these streets at night and takes people.”
“What?”
Zintal couldn’t believe what he was hearing, but Brooks kept talking.
“Nobody knows who it is or what it is, but what they do know is that about a month ago if you’re out after midnight it will get you.”
“Why in the thirteen hells then would you take us to a pub if you knew it was dangerous!?” Zintal demanded.
Brooks shrugged. “I thought we would have our drinks and been out of here before midnight; we were meant to be back home by now!”
Zintal shook his head in anger and pulled out his communicator. He scrolled through the services trying to find the summon ride application but no matter which application he tried all of them gave him the same error message.
No service…..
“I told you that wouldn’t work.” Brooks remarked but Zintal held up a hand to silence him. He needed to think, needed to use his enhanced mind to find a resolution to this problem, something that could get them home-
An idea popped into his head and he turned back to the bar keep.
“Where’s the nearest transit station?”
The bar keep pointed in direction and said “About six blocks down 3rd street and you can find one on Cheery Ave.”
Zintal turned back to Brooks with renewed hope. “We just got to make it there and we’re home free. Transit stations run all day and night, no exceptions.”
This news didn’t seem to cheer up Brooks as much as Zintal thought it would.
“We’ll never make it.” He replied; his breathing quickening as the last of the ale was burned from his system. Zintal grabbed him and imbued what strength he could to his friend. “We will make it if we stick together, alright?”
Brook slowed his breathing and looked at his friend; the clouds of fear diminishing from his eyes, but not fully leaving his sight.  “Alright, let’s do this.”
The pair steadied themselves and together pushed open the doors to the street outside. For Zintal it was like he had just entered an entirely different world than he remembered.
Where once the streets had been lively and full of crowds of people when they first entered the pub, now the streets were empty and a fog began rolling through the streets. He looked up and he could no longer see anything above the fourth story of the buildings around him. Looking down the street he saw that he could barely see to the end of the block as well.
“We’re fucked.” Brooks gasped as he saw the surroundings; his previous resolution having faded away into the depths of the surrounding fog. Zintal said nothing but instead grabbed hold of his friend and began making their way in the direction the bar keep had pointed.
The pair stuck close together as they made their way through the fog. Their footsteps run out against the cold concrete, echoing between the buildings as all other sounds seemed to have been silenced with the onset of night. A few of the street lights still functioned along the street, but with the fog’s thickness they gave a pale white glow that only illuminated a small area around their base.
As they passed by the stores and shops lining the road Zintal saw that nearly all of them were boarded up tight. Layers of metal grating, fencing, and chains sealed their occupants inside while trapping the pair of nervous friends out in the street. They’d made it a block away from the pub when a rather upsetting notion crossed Zintal’s mind.
“If I find out that this is one of your human pranks…” Zintal softly growled, but Brooks shook his head.
“I’d not joke about this mate.” Brooks replied quietly. “It’s bad luck to joke about death when you’re staring it right in the face.”
Zintal was about to chastise him for being overly superstitious when he heard something and froze. Brooks, who had been following behind him, bumped into his alien friend and nearly shouted from the startling when Zintal put his hand over his mouth. He put a finger over his mouth for silence and then another towards his ear to listen.
Brooks recognized the indication and likewise began listening as the fog swirled in closer around them.
The pair waited for what felt like an eternity until they heard the faintest of sounds coming from somewhere back the way they had just come. Brooks could feel his heart beating so fast it might pop out of his throat, while Zintal wiped a strand of purple sweat that rolled down his face as they waited in silence.
They didn’t need to wait long for just as when the pair thought they were going mad with fear and chalking it up to nerves they heard it again. Neither could make anything out from the fog but they knew the sound was closer than it had been before and was getting closer with each jut wrenching motion.
They heard the sounds of a soft pair of footsteps, and the screech of something being dragged across the ground.

Dear Marmee,
The bitter cold crept in slowly at first but there is no denying winter has arrived here in Wales. Everything is now covered in a sheet of white snow.
Every morning, I wake before the rooster's crow. Our friend Beth has moved in with us and she enjoys knitting very much. She has knitted me two new sweaters before Christmas has even come and they keep me much warmer than my worn-out coat from last Winter. It's a good thing too 'cause there's still much to be done on our farm, though I've made a rather decent amount of progress.
Even so, we hardly had any remaining produce leftover for ourselves after selling what I was able to salvage from our terrible blight. I won't burden you too much with our troubles but things have been rough here for us and I know Winifred is silently troubling herself over it.
You mentioned Jo is trying to get published? Please let me know how that goes for her. I think it might just inspire Winifred who is still glued to her typewriter whenever she has the time to write.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely, Lawrence
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Marmee,
I'm sorry to hear Jo was turned down in her quest to get published. Hopefully it won't discourage her from trying. Have you heard from Amy in Paris? How are Meg and Mr. Brooks? How does Beth like teaching piano?
Many of our animals, including the thorn in my side, Frank the Goose, passed on near the end of November. Without their eggs and milk to sell, money is tighter than ever.
Winifred has begun fretting over how we will make a good Christmas for Ozzy. So I've started working at the pub again to help us make it through the rest of winter and afford a few gifts for him. I'm struggling to come up with an idea on what to get Winifred, after all, how could I top her typewriter? If you have any ideas, please include them in your next letter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ozzy is doing quite well, thank you for asking. He likes to "help" me on the farm but mostly he enjoys playing in the snow with the garden shovels and trying to escape to our small pond. You would not believe the tantrums he throws when I have to wrangle him away from the edge. I can almost understand how my Father felt when I was a boy and he would paddle my bottom. The boy is like a fish the way he enjoys the water! Even bathtime seems to be his favorite part about bedtime.
It was a struggle to get him out of his crib and into a real bed but we needed to complete the transition before our new little one arrives. With Beth here to teach us patience, I can proudly declare we have finally succeeded.
Sincerely, Lawrence
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear Marmee,
We're approaching our due date rather quickly, a little under 3 months now. Millie has been staying with Louise for the Winter (and giving her free cooking lessons) after agreeing to stay and help Winifred deliver the baby, which I'm thankful for. I know this is a huge relief for Winifred. Her last delivery was not without complications and I know she grows uneasy the closer we get.
I know Winifred believes the baby will be a girl but I have my own suspicions we will welcome another son. I'm not wholly certain I could handle another little girl after we lost Flora. Not yet, rather. The pain of losing a child never truly leaves, does it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I did not mean to ignore your inquiry over how I'm fairing. I must keep a courageous face for my family, and consequently I've grown used to wearing my mask of gallantry. Since you so kindly asked though, I will admit that I am a little worn down as of late.
I spend long hours tending the farm and go to work even longer hours in the pub. Valerie, good hearted as she is, is not the best co-worker, often drinking herself stupid before the nights out. I suppose it's true what they say about you Irish folk.
Tumblr media
Most of my trouble comes from myself, I suppose. I watched my father save this very farm many times over and I should want to do the same. But with every plant that refused to sprout, I found myself resentful over having ever inherited it.
I think of my wife, the writer, the poet, and how she is able to read Ozzy her stories. I think of Jackson with his pub, and his son, Patrick, who's becoming a doctor, and you with your bookshop. Even my father who provided my mother and I with food, and a roof over our heads because he cared for the farm so tenderly. All of you, with such passion.
Even if I was as passionate as my father, the farming industry is changing. All these extravagant advancements are putting farmers out of work all over. If the farm were to go under, what would I do? It's all I've ever known.
If I don't have time to write before Christmas Day - I hope you have a Merry Christmas. Send my love to your girls and wish them the same for me as well.
Sincerely, Lawrence
P.S. Don't be cross with me for the joke, I only say it in jest. The Irish could drink me under the table any day of the week and sing a merry tune whilst doing so which is rather remarkable.

𝙎𝙐𝙈𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙔: Y/N is leaving work from Slough House rather late one evening and passes River's office to find him still sitting at his desk. She persuades him to not be so uptight & to come have a drink with her at the pub. She learns a bit more about him that night - including the fact that River Cartwright is a massive lightweight.

𝙎𝙐𝙈𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙔: They despised one another & barely tolerated each other while working at Slough House. Tensions rise as they are sent out into the field together, working undercover to search for a sleeper agent in the cozy village of Upshott. To avoid being caught, they are forced to pretend that they are "together". Being so close in each others company causes certain feelings rise to the surface that they have both tried to bury for far too long.

𝙎𝙐𝙈𝙈𝘼𝙍𝙔: Amongst the chaos of World War II breaking out, 23 year old Charlotte Brooks was desperate to be of use to her country. Fresh out of training, she is sent to the coast of France to work in a British base field hospital. It soon becomes clear that no amount of training could have prepared her for the traumatic sights she would see. One night, the hospital receives a convoy of trauma patients, soldiers who have been brutally injured while fighting on the front line. That night, an RAF pilot is taken into her care and it seems that she ends up finding love where she didn't go searching for it.

Spring’s been hard—things being born, things dying. The days are pregnant with funerals. I grieved, on an island surrounded by strangers who, over the course of a week, became people I’m in love with. I cried when the funicular doors closed on our week of paradise. I shed no tears at the service. It was like I was broken. I drank my guinness very quickly at the wake. Drunk, I found myself sat with the country’s oldest pub landlord, he’s 94. At his pub you pull your own pint and leave the change in a bowl. The toilet is in the flat upstairs. He put daffodils—my grandmother’s favourite—out when she died. In a countryside antiques shop, I (literally in this case) bump into the lead singer of The War on Drugs and we exchange small talk about the record and the importance of a cow bell. At night I dream I’m talking to H and Z and I wake up speaking gibberish. G tells us a story from a morgue which is unrepeatable on the internet but is incredibly moving. We drink the last bottle of wine my grandfather made in his cellar. It’s so strong, and so tannined, it brings a tear to my eye. He asked for a New York pastrami a few days before he died — oh, silly man, what year had your mind gone to, when you were living in Manhattan? You always hoped I would move to the city. With L, I walk up steep terrain towards the brook. We lie on the grass and the sun is on my face and it’s gorgeous. The train station cafe at the village is cash only but they also taped a bank transfer details sheet to the till. I buy an ice cream. They serve Bovril. I smile. There’s a sign which says “due to cutbacks, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off”. A group of us go to the queer club night and our sweaty beautiful bodies press against all the other sweaty beautiful bodies. Peaches comes on, we are all so perfect and safe. Love in the room, love in the room, love in the room. At the fish themed fancy dress party, I dress as an oyster adorned with a hundred sticky-back pearls. E says you're all gorgeous shoulders. I walk home at 4am. Our street is dark and quiet and beyond the outline of trees the sun is already coming up. J’s birthday approaches. Another funeral approaches. I wrap a handmade iron teapot imported from Kyoto. The solstice comes, what a relief to be in these long days where we can see each other in the light

Chapter 4- The Game
The mysterious God of Mischief proposes a special "game" he wants to play with you, which inadvertently gives you an idea on how to seduce him and save Vanaheim. Meanwhile, you begin to find yourself with strange feelings that could change everything...
Pairing: Prince Loki x Concubine!Reader Rating: 18+ ONLY (Minors DNI) MASTERLIST HERE *Please reblog if you like it!*
Content Warning: Threat and mentions of assault, eventual smut, indentured servitude and sex slavery, mean people being mean, violence, executions, more warnings likely to come

That night, you dreamed of Vanaheim. Before your closed eyes danced visions of your carefree days, waking up in the afternoon to get to the pub by the dinner rush, leaving (but not before being pulled into a quick drink with your co-worker) at the stroke of midnight and taking your time going back up the hill in order to see the stars, days off spent reading with your feet in the babbling brook and watching the children run about…
At one point, you were jerked from your slumber, and you sat up in the massive, plush bed you were sharing with your new owner. Taking a moment to get your bearings, you wrapped yourself in a sheet and wandered out onto the Prince’s terrace to get a glimpse of the view.
The first thing you noticed when you looked upwards, sadly, was that there weren’t very many stars in Asgard. The city below you may have glowed with rich, gilded light even at this unholy hour, but that glow extended up into the atmosphere, and all you could see were some planets and blue giants blinking off in the far distance, the few with magnitudes bright enough to reach through the light pollution hovering over the realm.
“I’ll never see home again,” you whispered, a single tear dotting the corner of your eye. “And I’ll never see the stars.”
You didn’t want to leave yourself exposed too long, so you only let the warm air brush your cheek for a moment before going back inside and making another attempt to sleep. It took nearly thirty minutes before your eyelids became heavy, and yet even after they closed, your mind raced.
You couldn’t read the Prince at all. You couldn’t trust him or his word. He somehow seemed to have the patience of a priest, yet also the fuse of a cannon. You couldn’t believe this was the one you had to deconstruct in order to save your people. It was like being blindfolded and given a bow, being instructed to hit the center of a target whirring in circles above you.
However, you’d passed the first test: you’d gotten his attention. You’d made yourself stand out. Now, you had to keep the momentum going without it appearing as if you were manipulating the god. That would certainly mean death the moment you stepped over the line. You were still Loki’s slave, after all.
He likes banter, you thought. He values a witty mind, and seems to resent his reputation as a rapist.
Before long, the first light of morning traced a finger over the comforter you were wrapped in. You were oblivious to it, having finally drifted off. It was the soft touch of a cool finger tracing circles on your back that brought you back to consciousness. You were sleeping on your belly, your hair was fanned out across your neck and above your head.
You couldn’t help but utter a small moan of pleasure. The touch felt nice. It froze you in place and made you feel like melting into the mattress itself.
“Oh…” the Prince cooed from behind you. You were conscious that he was lying behind you, and that he wasn’t just caressing your shoulders. You could feel his hardness on the small of your back, unyielding and large, and you were pretty sure he was palming it.
“Please, make that sound again, sparrow,” Loki commanded. “Quickly!”
As you wish, I suppose…
You obeyed, and you felt his hip buck against you after a moment, releasing a hot liquid onto your bare back in spurts that were accompanied by a low, guttural grunt from Loki.
“Master, how long were you doing that before I awoke?” you asked with an odd curiousness.
“I saw you wake in the middle of the night and stand out in the air. The moon gave you a blue glow. I thought perhaps a water fae had paid me a visit. I could dream of nothing else but your nakedness until the day broke.”
Sweet words, you admitted to yourself, even if the idea that he’d been fucking his hand on your back as you lay asleep for hours sent a momentary shiver up your spine.
“I am sorry I woke you, Master,” you said quietly, getting to your knees as your Prince used his magic to clean your back.
“Gods don’t require much sleep,” Prince Loki replied, sighing and laying back against his propped pillow. “It’s partially why we have so many concubines. We have too many hours in our days, and we grow bored. We need occupation.”
You didn’t respond, other than by bowing your head. “Good morning, Master.”
Loki smiled and took a moment to look at you, sitting up but letting the blankets and sheet sit below your waist, exposing your entire chest. “You know, you’ve given me a challenge. I intend to win it.”
“A challenge, Master? I never intended to do so,” you said, your voice wavering.
The Prince reached out a hand, running a nail up and down your skin, and the light scratch tickled. “All of you girls are told to fall to your knees at my every whim. I grow sick of being handed my prizes. I want you to refuse me until such a time exists that you cannot resist yearning for me any longer. I think I want to chase you.”
“Chase me, Majesty?”
The Prince nodded. “I’d forgotten the thrill of going to bed unsatisfied, only to feel the increasing urge to relieve my aching need at a later point, just as it is about to madden me. It is a game. Perhaps it will do, as you suggested last night, bring meaning to our sex.”
You nodded. “I am here to serve you, Master.”
Loki rolled his eyes. “I am sure they trained you to say that to my every damned request,” he mumbled. “But, in the meantime, I will summon you whenever I am in need of a diary to hear my thoughts. You will answer my musings with only your truest opinions, and not with the sycophantic swill they instruct you with back in your kennel. Do you understand me, girl?”
“Yes, Master.”
“Good, then,” Loki said, sitting up to meet your lips with his. You closed your eyes and allowed the moment to dim the light around you, feeling weight to it.
After he drew away from you, he allowed himself a brief flick of your nipple, making you jump, which clearly delighted him. “I will have some breakfast brought up for us before you go, sparrow.”

Hilda accosted you with questions when you were returned to the harem quarters later that morning. “How was the banquet? How many times did he fuck you? Did it hurt, or was he a gentle lover? Did he stick it up your ass or in your face first? Isn’t it huge?”
“Stop it!” you moaned, attempting to roll over in bed to catch up on the sleep you’d lost last night.
Hilda shook her head, opening her mouth to speak again before a knock at the door brought her to her feet. A maid was on the other side, carrying a tea tray and setting it by the sofa.
“You need to get up and drink this before it grows cold anyway,” said Hilda, waving the maid away and shutting the door a little too loudly behind her.
“What is it?”
Your roommate raised an eyebrow and giggled. “How naive are you, anyway?”
“Naive enough,” you replied.
“It’s an herbal tea that prevents conception,” Hilda explained. “You must drink it while it is hot, and before nightfall the following day. A pregnancy could result in exile for any of us.”
You sat up quickly, realizing that indeed, this was important (even if it wasn’t necessary), and you sat down while Hilda poured for you. Taking the cup to your lips, you sipped the hot liquid, grimacing at its weedy, earthy flavor, which was not to your liking.
“Yes, it’s unpleasant,” Hilda admitted. “But then again, I imagine so is giving birth on the backside of a mountain in the coldest corner of Jotunheim.”
You nodded, taking each sip of medicine slowly and cautiously until the cup was drained. You groaned when Hilda responded by pouring another cup from the pot on the tray. “Sorry, it’s three cups, Y/N.”
She tried to pry details out of you as you drank, but when it was evident that you weren’t going to answer her questions, she turned to talking about her life as the daughter of an unpopular shop owner in Capitol City, and how she was pretty sure her casting was paid for by a rival store.
You weren’t listening. You were beginning to get used to the flavor of the tea, and as you sipped, your mind never left Prince Loki’s bedroom. It wasn’t just how he was already seeing you as someone different from all of the other sex slaves in the palace, but that his body..his face…his hair…not only the sight of it, but the scent of it…all of it was burned into your retinas, and the image of him lying beside you, his skin pressed against yours, even the feeling of his cock against your ass was suddenly making you question your agreement to purposefully keep the Snake Prince out of your skirts.
Yet, again this felt like as much of an opportunity for you as it was a risk. Perhaps you both could win a prize by the end of it.
He wants this to be a game, you thought. Well, let’s play a game, Master!
Tumblr media
You were riding high on your success for the rest of the day, but by nightfall, you began to feel the pang of disappointment that the Prince had not called for you. Granted, he called no one that night, but you were still a little annoyed that your plans would have to wait.
After you’d tried and failed to fall asleep, Hilda suggested you join her and a few of Thor’s and Odin’s slaves for a Bliss session in one of their rooms. Agreeing, you dressed simply and followed Hilda to another room further down the hall and around the corner. She knocked a code onto the last door on the left, and it opened to reveal five others within.
“Y/N, this is Iduna, Magnus, and Romilda, who belong to Thor, and this room is Estrid’s and Astrid’s, they’re twins who were delivered here for the Allfather. Everyone, Y/N is the newest one for The Snake.”
Magnus chuckled, holding out a stick of Bliss. “Then I assume you’ll need the first hit.”
You didn’t waste time. You took the Bliss and inhaled deeply, expecting to cough uncontrollably. Instead, a cool, pleasant smoke filled your throat and lungs, having an enjoyable odor. Holding the gas in for a few moments, you turned away and exhaled.
Hilda cheered. “Now you’re officially one of us!”
It only took a few seconds before the first waves of euphoria broke over your mind like a gentle, crashing wave on the night of a full moon. Your anxieties over your unorthodox first encounter with your Master, how you’d made a bargain with him to keep yourself untouched, and how he hadn’t yet called you back all melted away.
However, you also felt a touch of vertigo begin to swell and make your eyes swim. “I…I need some air,” you mumbled, turning to the door that led out onto a small porch.
“A lightweight, for sure,” laughed Hilda, taking the cigarette from your hand. “She’s a farmer’s daughter or something. Borgund.”
“Borgund?” asked Estrid. “That little hamlet was chosen for this year?”
You didn’t bother to follow the conversation any further. Instead, you closed the glass door behind you, drinking the crisp night air through your nose. You still felt dizzy and warm, but at least you weren’t going to topple over and make an ass of yourself in front of your new allies.
Over beyond a row of spires, you could scarcely see the Prince’s terrace jutting out over the courtyard. The light from within his chamber illuminated his silhouette as he also looked out over the land.
Your thoughts went to his intense blue eyes hyper-focusing on yours, his lips hanging slightly open, his long, thin fingers nimble and defiant as they assessed every crevice of your form. His hair, curly and dark as a starless night, smelled of the similar lavender that had been sprayed on you before your less-than-savory debut. He was tall, imposing, dominating, yet he’d treated you with consideration.
“Who are you, Prince Loki?” you muttered in your Bliss-induced haze. “How deep does your mind go?”
As if answering you from afar, you could make out the small figure retreating inside before quickly dimming the light in his chamber.
“Y/N? Come play cards with us!” yelled Hilda from inside, already several drinks into the evening.
You waited a moment before going inside, still looking towards the Prince’s chambers, bidding a silent slumber to the sleeping god. Good night, Snake Prince…

MASTERLIST
First thing I do when I'm done with one of the customers is drive to Tae's pub to hang out with him and Jimin. I have been meeting Tae quite frequently these two weeks, but it's been impossible to hang out with Jimin at all.
I get it though. Out of the three of us, he's the only one who's still in a committed relationship. I used to be like him when I dated Leslie. I even stopped hanging out as much with Tae because of her -even after we both came from Korea together, because neither of us knew what we would do without the other. And probably that was one of the reasons why he never really liked Leslie that much -he almost threw a party when he got to know we both broke up, and almost fought her when he learned that she cheated on me.
—Hey, cutie —Brooke greets me with a malicious smile.
—Hey —I greet her, eyes fixed at one of the tables in the middle of the pub—. Give me a coke, please.
I don't really wait for her to say she got the command. I make my way to their table, although I regret it the exact moment they lay their eyes on me.
—Oh, look who dared to come after thirty minutes —Tae jokes.
—Yeah, all the whining, just for you to be late —Jimin complains.
—Don't get me started —I lift my finger at him—, when you're the one who has been standing us up continuously.
—Says the one who forgot he had friends for five years —Jimin looks at me with one of his eyebrows raised.
—Wait, that's right —Tae looks at me—. Why am I even hanging out with you?
I roll my eyes when they both team up to come against me. They always do this, it doesn't matter what the context is, I'm always the one on the losing team.
—How's Nori doing? —I ask, trying to stop the joke before we three actually get worked up on it.
—Fine —Jimin shrugs—. We barely had any free time with the whole moving thing.
—Will you throw a party at the new place? —Tae asks.
—What's this obsession with parties? —Jimin squints his eyes at him.
While they are about to start an argument between them, I feel my phone shake in the front pocket of my jeans. I bite my lip, playing with my lip ring, as I try to hold back a smile when I see her text.
Cocktease: Tam won't be here today
Cocktease: Just in case you want to put my observing skills to test after you're done with your customer.
Me: I probably will finish late today
—Cocktease? —Brooke gets my attention— Do you really have someone saved that way?
—It's no one —I lock the screen—. Thanks —I dryly say, moving the iced drink closer to me.
Brooke seems to get I don't want to talk about it, nor find her question funny, because she leaves without saying a word. I know she meant no wrong with that question, but thanks to her now I have Jimin and Tae looking at me, and probably waiting to see who will be the first one to start the interrogatory.
—Who the fuck is "Cocktease"? —Tae frowns at me.
—And why haven't you talked about her with us?
—Her? It could be a man —I give a sip to my drink after I mention that.
—Kook —Jimin snorts—. Come on. Who is she?
—She's no one —but I know they won't let it go.
But of course, that still doesn't convince them, and that's why I end up giving in and giving them the vaguest explanation.
—She's someone I met.
—No, fuck off —Tae huffs—. You can't be this big of an asshole to have her saved as "Cocktease" because you don't remember her name. Poor girl.
I sigh in relief when he mentions that, and Jimin just seconds his words, both of them scolding me for my attitude towards all the random girls I meet and hook up with. But, of course, all their ranting is for nothing because I disconnect long before they're able to start.
On that message she seemed pissed off. And while I can't blame her, I think it's a good idea she takes a look around her into the real world -by what Tam told us, Y/n doesn't really seem the type that has lived her life to the fullest. Proved during Melanie's birthday and our drinking games, and confirmed when she threw her hands at her head when I suggested having sex when we met. Well, that's one of the reasons why I barely met with her with the excuse of making her watch over people every night. The other being I probably won't be able to hold back if we get to the other part of our deal.
It took me my biggest effort and self control to stop the kiss before it got too much the other night, I'm sure I'll fuck it up somehow if we decide to go further.
My phone shakes in my hand again. And while I first think it could be Y/n again, I see it's Mark -and I don't even bother to open the chat when I read his text.
Inlaw: Don't bother to come back. Your client canceled, because he regretted the idea last minute. Take some rest.
If I actually thought today would be a bad day...
I take a sip of my drink, before I stand up again and start walking to the door.
—Are you leaving? —Tae asks from afar.
—After the show you two did to get me to come? —I hear Jimin complaining.
—I'll invite you to dinner next time we meet. I promise.
Those are the last words I dedicate to them, before I leave the pub and head to my motorbike -which is, as usual, parked at one side of the main door. And just like I did at Tae's pub, I do the same in the bar she works at, leaving the motorbike at one side of the entrance before I place the stand and hop off.
Before I enter, I see her. She's looking good despite wearing the most normal and basic clothes -she's just wearing a black t-shirt and a small apron surrounding her hips. But soon I'm aware that her serious expression isn't only due to tiredness, when I look a bit better and find a man looking at her up and down while she's just working.
—Don't play hard to get —I overhear after I enter the establishment and get closer to them—. You've been looking at me all night.
I see her tilting her head while her back is still facing him, and she taps on the long lower fridge with her fingers, as if she were trying to control herself.
—May I have a beer? —I interrupt them.
After seeing the relief tinting her eyes, I look at the old man from head to toe. I could knock him out with no effort if I wanted to, and it seems like he also knows I could, because he turns around and leaves us alone before I can even add myself into the conversation.
—You didn't have to do it —she serves me the cold beer.
—Do what? —I frown— I only asked for a beer.
—Your puffed chest says otherwise —she points to that part.
When she does that, I'm fully conscious my chest is a bit higher than usual and my back is tense. Tilting my head while smiling, after I know I used that body posture to intimidate him, I relax and go back to my natural state.
—He isn't the first one —she assures me—, and he won't be the last. There are, at least, four assholes like him every night —she looks at her invisible clock—. Actually, this is the time they start showing up —Y/n supports herself on the counter—. You told me you wouldn't come.
—The customer canceled at the last minute —I sip on my jar—. Have you done what I told you?
The way she squints her eyes and looks around, gives away that she did actually spend some time looking around. But I'm not sure whether she's actually looked into people and their body languages, or if she just stood here and looked at everyone like a security guard at the mall.
Y/n finally nods, and she bends closer to me, supporting the weight of her body on her two elbows resting on the counter.
—Will you make me watch people as if I were Kevin Carter? —she raises an eyebrow— I thought you were going to help me.
Kevin Carter... Who the fuck is that?
—You didn't see anything that could be of help? —I mirror her, raising one of my eyebrows as I try to mock her— Examples of what you should do and what you shouldn't do. Some dudes' expression when they want to run away from a girl?
I'm not saying this is the only way to learn, but it's definitely the best way to get a visual indicator of what you should do or not, without you actually being the one doing shit.
I turn on my stool, just to turn back to her a few seconds after when I spot a girl that reminds me of the scene she pulled with Seokwoo back at the party. She's desperately trying to keep the conversation going, while he's just looking for a safe and fast escape from there.
—She is you.
While the brunette insists on getting closer, the blond male looks at her, takes a sip of his drink and looks around him fast. And he repeats the same cycle a few more times until he's finally able to walk away.
—We're simple —her eyes go back to me—. We don't want to know everything about you the moment we meet —I sip on my drink—. And the male nature is... primitive. We like to believe we're in control of the whole thing, even if it's not true. A girl that speaks too much and leads the conversation? She's out 99% of the time. She reeks of desperation.
—What about the other 1%?
—She's an eleven out of ten, the dude is way too drunk, the dude is even more desperate than her —I start counting with my fingers.
—That's offensive.
—You started your words-vomit with my cousin. You didn't seem desperate, but you seemed nervous and insecure. And you proved it even more when you ran away right after. Result? You ended up upstairs alone.
And actually... Thank god she ended up upstairs alone.
—We are assholes. And we want what we think it's difficult to get —I shrug—. If you play hard to get, keep stuff to yourself, tease a bit, and act unpredictable... any man will be after you. Whether it's on Tinder, a friend of a friend, or even that guy that's almost going to pass out over there —I point with my head to a long haired guy almost falling from the edge of the counter.
—Ohh so you're into girls like that? —that's the only conclusion she gets from everything I've said.
—Yup —I look at her, tilting my head—. That's why I like you.
✸ ✸ ✸
Even if I could've left long ago, I still stayed to keep her company the rest of her shift. And I also stay to help her pick everything up after she closes.
—You can go —she tells me, as she walks to where I'm standing—. Thank you for the lesson.
—I'll take you home —behind the counter, I'm still placing the glasses inside the dishwasher.
—It's alright.
—I said I'll take you home —I insist, without looking at her.
And probably it sounds rougher than I intended to. I didn't pretend to sound like I was forcing her to go with me, but I don't think she should be going home alone this late, when I can easily drop her off anywhere.
After we're done inside, we walk to my motorbike. I hop on it first, waiting for Y/n to get on it after me and wrap her arms around me. But that never happens. When I turn to her, and try to look over my shoulder, I see her smirking as she holds onto the bars on the sides of the seat.
Grinning at that image, seeing her upper body slightly lifted up because of her arched back in that position, I take off the stand and make the engine roar.
—It's up to you.
She doesn't move an inch while we go straight on the road, and I actually have no reason to turn right yet, but she's begging to be teased right now. I turn abruptly, feeling her arms instantly wrap around my body, followed by a short scream as she sticks her body to mine.
Something that should've been used to tease her, ended up playing against me. Because the feeling of her fast heartbeat and her tits pressing on my back is clouding my mind with the filthiest scenarios.
Everything I've been trying to avoid these weeks goes to hell as soon as I feel her closer than I should for three minutes.
She stands next to the motorbike when we arrive to her place, but before she's able to say goodbye -and before I can think it better-, I drop the question:
—Can I go up to your place?

“Does the sea dream?”
The question-not-question isn’t quite whispered, but it’s soft, and Hob’s lips barely part to ask it. His mind is leagues away, thoughts a gentle, bubbling brook, but he stares at Dream’s tired face with a reverence he still feels undeserved, yet familiar. Dream may feel its cool contentedness if he would simply reach, dip his fingers in this cool, familiar current, the gates of his mind open, open, always welcome for new and loved things. Thoughts bump and stick briefly upon half-hearted snags, and Hob’s tongue would pluck and gift them like pretty-but-ultimately-worthless stones, just to let Dream show his appreciation. Hob was never one to keep words nor small joys to himself.
“She does.” Dream answers, in that same softness. The moon is full and night is plump with living things. Here, in the upstairs flat of the New Inn five-past-two, this meagre dwelling above a temple of drink and song, the air is gentle and heavy as a weighted blanket. Sacred.
They lay side-by-side above the bedsheets, because they had rejoiced in spontaneous revelry that night. The pub’s regulars had crowed, upon entering, that it would be their 5th wedding anniversary as the clock strikes midnight, and the sheer wondrous second-hand joy had persuaded Dream to join in on the sheer marvellous humanity of it all. Joy for the sake of joy. Hopes and dreams and pure-hearted glee seep into the very floorboards of this pub, intoxicating him all the better than the drinks Hob had continued to ply him with as the night wears on.
Dream had stuck around for Hob to close, and they had grasped at each other, murmuring and hushing and giggling all the way upstairs. Hob had been plenty handsy, and Dream wasn’t of the mind to refuse him, a mile soberer and arousal a sticky-heat, a low burning flame, as it always would be with his lover, his husband, oldest and dearest friend.
Yet when they had finally crawled into bed, they found themselves too caught, instead, in holding one another, palm-to-palm and skin against skin. Dream with his face pressed against Hob’s chest, listening, listening, the rushing blood and the thumping of heart as if each cell carries with it a singular story, this mortal vessel a miniature kingdom of tales in and of itself. Dream is nothing so confined; he is the Dreaming, and the Dreaming is him. He is the subconscious and every sleeping mind of every being that lives, would live, have lived. His skin knit of every woven lie and his blood the wind of singing breath. For Hob, Dream listens, and makes a heart, and sets it to beat. For Hob.
Hob hums, and strokes Dream’s hair between his fingers. Strong, callused hands. Hands never meant for idle, hands for work. Yet they idle here, they rest. They rest for Dream.
“Does she have nightmares?”
A curious question. One Dream spares a thought for longer than before, not because he doesn’t know, but because it is…difficult, to explain, in simple, soft words, in human words.
“She does.” he simply says, instead.
Hob’s hand pauses, briefly. “What scares the sea?”
Many things, Dream thinks. Nothing at all. She is not Endless, for nothing comes close to Endless, but she is not dissimilar. For she is every drop and broken coral, the bounty and the isolating blue and a cosmic force of rage. Life and Death and Love and Indifference.
What scares the sea?
“Herself.” Dream answers. “She fears herself, most of all.”
The night is plump and soft and sacred, and Hob Gadling tucks the sea against himself. It is every drop and broken coral, every singing breath and living being, and for tonight, it makes a heart to beat, just for him.

British New Year's Eve Traditions Revealed Through Food: The Feast
Celebrating New Year's Eve in the UK is more than just popping corks; it's also about sharing big, cosy meals with loved ones. Most people eat traditional dishes like roast meat and Yorkshire pudding with seasonal veggies. As another festive table centrepiece, you might find luscious roast lamb, a traditional British meal that captures the season's spirit with its richness and warmth.
Traditional British desserts, such as Christmas pudding and mince pies, are often served as a final treat throughout the holiday season. These delicious sweets go great with a scoop of thick, velvety custard or a dollop of brandy buttergoes.
Pubs: The Centre of Joy and Celebration
Pubs around the United Kingdom become raucous centres of cheer as the New Year's Eve festivities heat up. People celebrate the new year by gathering at local bars and pubs to toast the arrival of the new year with merriment and good cheer.
As if a pub's warm and welcoming environment weren't enough, they also serve a wide variety of celebration drinks. A wide variety of libations is available, from traditional cocktails and mulled wine to ciders and ales made in the area. In addition, customers can raise a glass of prosecco or champagne for the new year.
New Year's Eve is a time for celebration, and people worldwide, including in Britain, often indulge in various delicious foods and wines to mark the occasion.
Here's a glimpse into the popular choices for wines and food during New Year's celebrations:
Bubbling Wines and Champagne:
The process of pairing:
Traditional midnight toasts include sparkling wines and champagne. They are adaptable in several courses due to their incredible versatility in pairing with different meals.
Pairing Foods:
Seafood, fried delicacies, creamy cheeses, and light appetisers are just a few items that go well with these fizzy drinks. Cheese platters, prawn cocktails and oysters are typical accompaniments.
White Wines:
Pairing:
Lighter foods and shellfish go wonderfully with white wines like Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.
Food Pairing:
Lighter poultry dishes, salads, and seafood pair nicely with white wines. Nice sides to have on hand include smoked salmon, crab cakes, or a salad with citrus fruits.
Red Wines:
Pairing:
Red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot tend to be more popular regarding heartier, meat-centric dishes.
Food Pairing:
The flavours of red wine go wonderfully with roasted meats, lamb, and hearty pasta meals. Solid cheeses and cured meats on a charcuterie board go well together.
Rosé Wines:
Pairing:
The adaptability of rosé wines makes them perfect for pairing with a wide range of foods.
Food Pairing:
Lighter meats, grilled veggies, and picnic foods all go nicely with them. Some suggested pairings with Rosé include grilled chicken and a fresh tomato salad.
Dessert Wines:
Pairing:
Port and Sauternes are great dessert wines for people who have a sweet craving.
Food Pairing:
Dessert wines go well with various sweets, including fruit tarts, chocolate desserts, and cheesecakes. These wines go well with matured, creamy cheeses and make a great addition to a cheese course.
Festive Cocktails:
Drinks like a creative combination or a spectacular New Year's Eve punch can liven up the party.
Food Pairing:
Many different appetisers, from spicy to savoury, go nicely with cocktails. Snacks like sliders, bruschetta, or stuffed mushrooms perfectly pair with cocktails.

A Stiffy (*snigger*) recap for the sextet of Conviction episodes. Sadly no longer Smiffina related as Rachel (boo!) is Inspector for now but still useful for fic background further down the line as they really are quite Callum/Smithy heavy and it feeds a lot of their story.
Conviction aired between the 1st to the 16th July 2009. Gina left October 2nd 2008 so we are 9 months on from An Honour To Serve Part 2. A quick scan back through the wiki episode guides tells us that in the last few months, Smithy mentored Mel a little bit during her first NYE attached to the MET that had her brother down from 'Oop North' to get caught up in a crime, Smithy and Leanne Samuels (Witness 1-8 and others before that) got back in touch during a case that involved a single mother and her sister who happened to attend a community hub that Leanne runs. He learnt Brooke is thriving and that Leanne had met someone and was getting married. Callum got close to another victim of domestic abuse who trusted him enough to tell him about criminal matters her husband was involved with (A cash in transit job). The case was further complicated when Max trampled over it. During Nate's Extra Special School Season, Smithy was stabbed by a school boy during an arrest and his lung collapsed but luckily all was OK in the end. Diane returned for one night before she transferred to another station as a Sgt. She and Smithy ended up undercover in a club with uniform to catch the dealer of mis-identified drugs and Arun, Beth, and Sam all left.
Conviction - Part 1 - Cover Up (1/6)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ben and Sally find a burglar still on the premises, unfortunately he runs into the allotments behind the houses and Sally loses him. Callum and Roger arrive to give support.
Smithy is called to a disturbance outside the E1 club/pub. He breaks up a fight and threatens a bloke peeing in public with arrest, only to find an assault victim next to him. He asks the rather unhelpful group watching who heard or saw anything - noone helps out!
Tumblr media
Sally speaks to their informant, she's in her 70's and can't see very well so can't give a description other than 'male'. The owner returns rather worse the wear and doesn't seem too surprised to see the police. He claims nothing appears to be missing other than an expensive watch. Callum points out the man has a rip in his trousers and some cuts and bruises on his hand. He asks if it was a good night, and the man says he fell over after one too many. Callum just nods and tells him CID will be in touch with a crime reference number in the morning when asked about making an insurance claim.
The assault victim, Andrew Brennan, has 100 pounds and his own bank cards. It doesn't seem like a mugging. Stevie tactfully explains what happened to the mans wife when she calls. Evie rushes to the hospital and explains that her husband told her he was going to speak to someone 'about work' - he's an odd job man/painter decorator. She doesn't know who he met or who might want to hurt him. Roger finds an expensive watch engraved with OR - Oliver Robinson - the owner of the burgled home that Callum was dealing with - at the scene. Brennan could be the burglar.
In the morning, Callum and Ben head to the Brewery where Robinson works to ask if he knows Brennan. Robinson asks if he's the person who took it and Callum explains the man is still unconscious. Robinson claims not to recognise him and says he's had no work done on the house recently. He seems evasive and excuses himself for a meeting, telling them he doesn't want to take it further as he's gotten the watch back - even if the police are holding into it for the time being as evidence. Ben and Callum are in agreement - he's lying. He definitely recognised Brennan from the picture.
Smithy and Stevie return to the E1 bar where Brennan had been drinking the night before. Pete, the head barman gets them a copy of the CCTV whilst Smithy asks a woman at a table if she'd been in the night before. She says she doesn't work there and is just waiting for her boyfriend. As they leave, Jason Devlin, the manager appears and introduces himself and says he recognises Brennan and that he was with another man who was wearing a suit and they appeared to be having a 'heavy discussion'. Watching the CCTV back, Roger recognises Oliver Robinson as the man meeting Brennan.
Callum wonders if the watch was even stolen in the first place, it's possible that the 'heated discussion' turned violent outside and that the watch fell off in the fight. He wonders if Robinson faked the burglary given that - despite his inebriated condition - one of his first questions was about insurance. Noone has come forward to admit to seeing Brennan in the alley, however one witness did describe a man in a suit getting into the back of a gold coloured car at approx 9.20pm. There's no CCTV on the required street so Rachel tasks Sally and Roger with trawling through the CCTV of the surrounding area.
Rachel tasks Smithy and Stevie with returning to the hospital to speak to Brennan's wife to see if she knows if he'd worked on Robinson's house or to at least give them access to his paperwork for them to check. Things get a whole lot murkier when Evie tells them that Robinson is Andy's real surname. Brennan is his mum's maiden name that he took after he was released from a young offenders institute because he was finding it hard to get work. Stevie asks if Oliver Robinson could be a family member and his wife shakes her head. "I doubt it. His family are dead."
Smithy looks him up and finds that Brennan has convictions dated in the 1980's for drugs, theft and arson. Oliver Robinson is listed as his brother. Difficult to explain why he lied to Callum about not knowing or recognising the picture of his brother! He tells Callum that he didn't want to get him in trouble for taking his watch. Callum tells him that it's bigger than the supposed theft of his watch and that they're suspicious he infact attacked Brennan himself. Robinson insists he didn't and says that Brennan has gotten himself caught up in something that he wants nothing to do with. He's apparently hassling Robinson for money but won't tell him what it's for.
Brennan insists he doesn't know who hurt him, he was out for a few drinks after work, left the bar approximately 10 past 9 and was attacked and left laying down so didn't see who did it. Smithy asks if he left the bar with his brother. Evie is confused and asks if it's a joke and Stevie clarifies that it's the man who they spoke about earlier. She is horrified Brennan never told her about him, even if he hadn't seen him in years. She refuses to leave the room and wants to know what's going on. Smithy tells them that Robinson is being questioned and that he's told them Brennan wanted to borrow money. Brennan insists that it's money owed to him and that his brother owes him and gave him the watch. "You think it's my brother who beat me up?"
Robinson tells Callum he hadn't seen his brother since the late 80's and they were never close but he gave him 'some money' because he's his brother. Callum says that doesn't make sense. Robinson says he only met him the night before to tell him he'd give him no more before they went their separate ways. He says he left E1 before his brother and stopped for a kebab before he walked home. Callum asks what Brennan did. "Obviously he went round to my house and stole the watch, didn't he!?" "I don't know. I'm asking you."
Brennan tells Evie he's always been straight with her but doesn't say why his brother owes him several thousands of pounds. Evie storms out, followed by Stevie. Evie tells Stevie that her husband is a good man, there'll be a reason why he's lied and that they're trying for a baby but the 'trying' is proving difficult as nothing seems to be happening and they've just finished a second round of IVF.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rachel asks Callum if it's feasible for Brennan to have gotten to his brothers and back in the time suggested. It's possible but doesn't make sense as he lives the other side of Canley so why return to the club? Robinson's kebab stop is confirmed by the CCTV from the shop and there's no way he could have returned in time to assault Brennan. Rachel suggests that if his brother didn't assault him then he definitely knows something given the fact he's lied so consistently. FIU look into Brennan's accounts and find he's paid a private fertility clinic for tests. Stevie and Smithy return to the hospital to talk to him about it but he's done an illadvised runner after getting dressed.
Evie is as confused as the officers for why her husband has left and tells them she has his keys so he can't have gone home. They ask if she has any idea where he might have gone, especially as he still thinks his brother was the one who attacked him and that he's in the frame for stealing the watch. Smithy and Stevie arrive to double check on Robinson and they find Brennan collapsing at the brewery.
Sally spots a gold Volvo on CCTV and they go to speak to the owner. He's cagey as he has been mini-cabbing without a licence but Callum just says they'll 'assume for now he's in the process of getting one'. He admits being in the area and that he picked up a man in a suit the night before. His voice sounded familiar to the driver who thinks he's spoken to him previously but can't say where or how. Callum suggests to Ben that he's a 'regular' of the drivers which could potentially lead to him being a member of staff. They take him in and run him through an ID parade of staff members from the CCTV and he identifies the owner, Devlin.
Rachel suggests that they concentrate their efforts on Devlin as the man who attacked Brennan. She shows them CCTV of Brennan and Devlin talking over the bar which seemed innocent. She suggests they have history but Devlin said he'd never met Brennan before in his life - though he would if he'd gone on to attack him. Smithy and Callum can't agree who should go speak to Devlin so Rachel says they can both go and sends Ben with them to 'keep them in line'.
At the E1 the Sgt's meet Matthew Devlin, Jason's father who asks if it's something serious. Devlin appears down the stairs with his girlfriend. He insists he was at the club all night doing the books in the back - as he'd said earlier - and that he didn't leave at 9.20pm. His father says he can vouch for him and Devlin adds that the barman, Pete and his girlfriend can too. Devlin Senior suggests they have the wrong man. "Who did you say the cab driver was?" Devlin asks. "... I didn't." Callum replies. The suit he wore is at the dry cleaners and his girlfriend covers that she spilt a drink over him approx 9pm in the smoking area - an area covered by CCTV. Callum asks for a copy and they spot Brennan talking to Devlin's girlfriend but no Devlin until they hug and the girl kisses Brennan's cheek - and Devlin appears from a doorway at 8.40pm.
Stevie tells them that she has done some digging on the earlier convictions of Brennan. Two separate witnesses spotted two boys at the scene of the arson. The officers investigating thought that it might be Oliver but their parents gave him an alibi. Oliver was older so perhaps the parents thought he'd get a rougher deal being 18 with two drug possession charges so Andrew took the rap alone and that perhaps that is why Oliver has been giving his brother money. Callum wants to nail Oliver on top of the assault but faking the burglary would only get a caution. All three say they should speak to Brennan and offer to listen should he want to clear the air.
Brennan says that he talked to the girl, Abbie, for the first time that night and that she was really nice and sweet and that the hug and kiss on the cheek meant nothing and that 'even the tall guy behind the bar was joking about it.' He says that he warned him off and to keep his hands to himself and that Brennan laughed and said she was out of his league. Stevie asks why she hugged him. Brennan explains he'd told Abbie he was about to be a dad - she asks if that was because his brother was going to pay for him to get private treatment. "You know about that?" he asks and Stevie nods and says she reckons she knows why. Brennan clams up and tells Stevie she doesn't know what she's talking about and that he served the time and will stick to his original statement if she starts digging.
Smithy suggests that Devlin is really dangerous if he can kick a man half to death for a friendly hug and kiss on the cheek. The level of violence he used is far too much for a first offence and so Devlin should be someone they know about. Rachel gives permission to bring him in for an interview.
Devlin claims he doesn't remember the conversation with Brennan and that Abbie is a very pretty girl so he's used to people hitting on her but he trusts her implicitly so has no worries. He claims the angry expression on his face is 'his thinking face' and laughs off any inference that he was the one who attacked Brennan. He claims he doesn't know which dry cleaners his suit is at because Abbie deals with it all and she has lost the ticket and mocks them for having only the word of an illegal cabby for evidence. The Sgt's are aware Abbie won't inform on her boyfriend and Smithy suggests getting forensics to go over the taxi and see if they can get some DNA. Unfortunately before they can get to the car, Sally is called to an arson attack on the cab drivers car and everyone claims they saw nothing. "If someone's trying to intimidate you-" Callum starts saying to the driver who responds. "It's worked." and he withdraws his statement. Callum tells him that with his help Devlin will go down for a long time. "Where is he now?" he asks with Callum telling him he's at the station. "Exactly..." he says, gesturing to his burning car. Callum threatens to nick him for illegal minicabbing and he tells him to arrest him and that he'd rather be sent down than have his family at risk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Abbie can't help with the dry cleaners name and so Smithy and Callum turn to go with a warning they're going to search Devlin's house for 'the ticket' but there might be a clean up job required after. Abbie suggests there is a place on Gasson Street that they might have used. Pete is clearly listening in and then asks the men if he has been charged when Abbie goes to answer a call. He tells them that Devlin has a temper but is very wary of the CCTV camera watching them and insists he can't help them any further.
Smithy hits a dead end with the Gasson St Dry Cleaners and is not happy to have to bail Devlin because of the lack of evidence. Callum is pissed off at having to give Robinson his watch back whilst he only gets a slap on the wrist for faking a burglary. Neither are very happy boys!
Stevie and Callum tell Robinson they know exactly what happened. Robinson reluctantly hands the watch back and tells them to give it to Brennan. At the hospital Evie tells them they don't want the watch and that all she wants is their life back. She thinks that the watch would be blood money and taint whatever it bought. Brennan gives them the watch back.
Ben spots at fire engine approaching them and tells Roger that he used to beg his dad to follow them so he could see them in action. Roger chuckles and humours him and turns the car to follow the engine. "Don't say I don't treat you nice!" In the meantime Smithy is tracked down by Callum who tells him the E1 bar is on fire and both men hurry to the scene. Callum suggests Devlin has upset someone further up the food chain. "Nothing like a bit of poetic justice, hey?"

Preliminary Observations
Book: Open Heart, Book 1, Chapter 2
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks)
Word count: 1888
Rating: Teen
Category:  Ethan’s POV
Warning: A few curse words.
Prompt/Summary:  Harper asks Ethan to share his impressions of the new interns after their first day on the job.
A/N: I’ve been replaying Chapter 2 over and over as I work on my next set of edits. I had a little spark of inspiration and just started writing and I think it resulted in my first fic. 😱 Here goes nothing!
Tumblr media
Ethan was in the diagnostics office finalizing some paperwork before calling it a day and heading to Donahue’s to decompress.  He frequented the pub a few nights a week usually to grab a beer and some dinner before heading home.  Sometimes he would treat himself to a nice glass of scotch, a reward after a long and stressful day.  Tonight was most definitely going to be a night that he treated himself.  It was July 1st after all, the most dreaded day of the year.  The day each year that a new cohort of interns show up to wreak havoc in the hospital. And as anticipated, it had been an exhausting day of babysitting and putting obnoxious ass-kissers in their place.
Donahue’s was down the street and popular with the hospital staff.  For Ethan, it was an airlock between the hospital and home.  A place to grieve losses or celebrate victories and leave the remnants of the workday behind.
Ethan wasn’t a social person, but he liked to watch people.  He was exceptionally observant.  He found it fascinating what you could learn about a person when observing them “out in the real world.”  And over the years he had learned quite a bit about his colleagues watching from his barstool in the corner.
He knew some of the interns would likely find their way to the local watering hole tonight.  No doubt receiving an invitation from the friendliest of residents, Dr. Delarosa.  His curiosity about this new batch outweighed the desire to go directly home and avoid any further annoyance.  And if he was being honest with himself, there was one intern in which he was quite intrigued.  When he passed through the atrium a little while ago, he overheard the new friend group discussing their plans for the evening.  She confirmed that she would be there tonight, thus confirming his decision to stop and get a drink before heading home.
“Knock, knock,” Harper said as she rapped on the frame of the open door.  “Got a minute?”
“I was just getting ready to leave for the night,” Ethan said as he signed off on the last of his paperwork.
“I won’t keep you long.  I just wanted to check in.  I know how much you look forward to this day each year,” she sassed him.  “So, what do you think of the new crop?” she asked moving to take the seat next to him at the table.
Ethan leaned back in his chair, pinched his eyes shut, and took a deep breath.  “They’re interns, Harper.  They are annoying as all hell.”  He started to rub the tension from his neck.
“Here, let me help you with that,” she said seductively, brushing his hand aside to replace it with her own.
“Harper, please,” he said sternly.  Gently he grabbed her wrist and moved her hand back to her lap.
Ethan had been warding off her advances for a few weeks now.  He recognized the pattern and knew she wanted to be “on” again.  And truth be told, he was tired of the on/off situation. He respected her immensely, but was bored with her as a romantic partner.  The last time they were officially together, conversations rarely strayed away from work.  Sex was satisfying, but nothing mind-blowing.  The investment in whatever kind of relationship they attempted no longer worth the return.  Her becoming Chief was a convenient excuse to end things for good.
Seemingly unphased by yet another polite rejection, she continued, “I heard the Internal Medicine floor had several emergencies and that the code team was spread pretty thin this afternoon.”
“Yes, it was a busy day.  We had simultaneous code blues called this afternoon,” Ethan stated.  “Unfortunately, the patient that the code team was called to first didn’t make it.  However, the doctors who called the code for the other patient were thankfully able to pull her through.”
“Wow, it sounds like the interns on this floor got to see quite a bit of action today!”
“I suppose so.”
“So… did any of those interns stand out to you today?” she said secretly hoping that her niece was one of them.  “I also need to know if you scared any of them shitless and made them quit already.  We do have candidates on a waitlist praying for that to happen,” she laughed.
Ethan pinched the bridge of his nose.  He knew all she really cared about was Aurora’s performance today.  “Harper, I was just trying to make sure no one unnecessarily died today.  I wasn’t really giving any one of them too much thought,” he lied.  He had been giving one a lot of thought actually.  His recommendation for the intern program.  He had seen a lot of potential in her application and she hadn’t disappointed on her first day in action.
“Come on, Ethan,” Harper nudged, “I know you well enough to know you were paying closer attention than that.  You're the reason we all stopped placing bets on interns.  You called it every time.  You have an uncanny ability to see those with the most, and least, potential.  I don’t know if it’s your keen diagnostic skills or a Spidey-sense…” she said, shaking her head with a laugh, “...but obviously my strategy of counting how many times an intern is caught crying in the supply closet is flawed.”
Ethan gave her a polite laugh.
“So, go on and tell me, who are you betting on this year?”
“Fine,” he said exasperated, not wanting to play this game with her. “Based on my preliminary observations today, I would bet on Varma and Brooks.  From what I observed today, Dr. Varma has the ambition and drive to be successful here.  She's aggressive and has a tactless attitude, but she’s quite intelligent.  And she won’t be scared easily.”

The Boyfriend Excuse
Book: Open Heart, Book 2 (sometime after the gala)
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks)
Word count: 1.1K
Rating: Teen
Category:  Fluff
Warning: A curse word or two.

Sawyer had been at Donahue's since happy hour started.  The crew had all gathered there to celebrate Jackie's birthday.  Given the occasion and who they were celebrating, tequila shots appeared in front of her one after the other.
Breaking into a sweat on the dance floor, Sawyer began to feel quite dizzy.  She weaved and wobbled her way to a stool at the bar.  Trying to regain equilibrium, she rested her elbows on the counter and buried her face into her hands.
A few moments later, a very tan and handsome man wearing a navy colored Hawaiian print shirt sidled up next to her.
"Hey there.  How are you doing?" he asked, running fingers through his side swept hair.  "Can I get you something, or maybe just take you home?"
"I'm fine, and no thank you," she replied politely, slowly lifting her head.  She avoided making eye contact with him and kept her eyes trained behind the bar.  She thought if she could get the bartender's attention and order two drinks that this guy would assume she wasn’t there alone.
She just managed to ask the bartender for the drinks when a towering figure who smelled like a mix of citrus and ocean breeze stepped up to the bar on her other side.
The men flanking her shared a gentlemanly nod of understanding. The taller of the two then leaned down and whispered near her ear.
"You look like you’re ready to get out of here.  Do you want to come home with me tonight? Or should I take you back to your place?"
"Um, would you excuse me please?” As quickly as she could without falling over, Sawyer jumped up from the stool and started to walk away from the bar.
“Where are you going?” asked the man who had approached her first.
She whipped her head around in his direction, the quick movement making her feel like she was once again spinning in a teacup.
“I need to use the restroom.”
After locking the door, she propped herself against the sink for stability and pulled her phone from the back pocket of her jeans.  She opened her most recent text exchange and began typing.

You Look Very...
Book: Open Heart, Book 1
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks)
Word count: 1.2K
Rating: Teen
Category: Fluff
Warning: A curse word or two.
Prompt/Summary:  Sawyer shows up at Ethan’s place unannounced and neither is prepared for what they see when he opens the door.  This takes place after Miami but before the opera.
A/N:  Inspired by the “dresses” ask from my beautiful friend @peonierose.
Tumblr media
As she scooted out of the car, Sawyer promised, “I'll only be a few minutes."
"Not a problem, babe," her companion assured, already scrolling through their phone to keep busy while they waited.
Sawyer grasped her clutch and a file folder in one hand, the other picking up the bottom of her dress to keep it from getting snagged as she climbed the steps to the entrance of the building.
Without thinking, Sawyer buzzed herself in with a code that had previously been shared with her.
"Good evening, Miss Sawyer," the security guard greeted.  "Don't you look lovely tonight."
"Why thank you, Mike," she beamed while making her way to the elevator bay.  As she stood waiting for one, "Having a good night so far?"
"Can't complain."  And with the ding of an available lift, "I hope you and Dr. Ramsey have a pleasant evening.”
"Thanks, but I'm actually not staying long tonight.  Just dropping something off."  She twisted the file in the air for him to see just as the elevator doors closed on their conversation.
After being whisked to the top floor, Sawyer walked to the door labeled 8A at the end of the hall and knocked.  One hard knock, followed by two quick softer ones.
Just a few minutes prior, a frustrated Ethan shoved his laptop to the side. Having reviewed his fifth sepsis case study that day with no new insights, he threw his head to the back of the couch and ran his hands down his exhausted face.  Closing his eyes, he willed himself to think of anything else but his dying mentor.
With some luck, his brain cooperated.  Behind his eyelids, he had been transported to a warmer climate, where salt air tickled his nostrils, and ocean breeze cooled his heated skin.  Where he sat in a similar position with the most pleasant weight straddling his lap.  His hand was held in place with the most melodic rhythm beating beneath the heel of his palm…
THUMP.  Thump, thump.
The familiar pattern of knocks at his door jarred him back to reality.  He knew in an instant who stood on the other side, and without further thought he swiftly crossed the room to answer.
As the door gently swung open, “Sawyer?  Is something wrong? Is it Na-” he paused, suddenly distracted by her appearance. “Naveen?”
“Oh, no, he’s uh…” she muttered, momentarily losing her focus.  “He-he’s fine. Stable and all settled in for the night.”
Initial worry set aside, they each took a moment to appreciate the sight in front of them.
Sawyer sucked in and held the breath that had just escaped from between Ethan’s lips.
He stood barefoot before her.  The only article of clothing on his body, soft cotton pajama pants, accentuated his V-cut abs. Blues followed greens as they traced the defining lines of his bare pectoral, trapezius and deltoid muscles, ending on the patch of dark hair just below his navel.
Ethan’s abs involuntarily constricted.  A muscle memory triggered by her stare, one he had caught before through a slightly fogged mirror.

My #1 post of 2022
Allergic to You
Book: Open Heart, Book 1
Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks)
Word count: 2.3K
Rating: Teen
Category: Hurt/Comfort, Fluff
Warning: A couple curse words
Prompt/Summary: Does your MC have any severe allergies? Do you have any headcanons for their LI's?
A/N 1:  THANK YOU to the anon who sent the ask that inspired me to write my first hurt/comfort fic.  It’s my most favorite trope and I’ve been wanting to take a stab at it. I hope you like it!
A/N 2: This is set a few weeks after Miami.  Also, I’m not a medical expert. If it’s not medically accurate, just go with it.
Tumblr media
“It’s definitely an ear infection.  I’ll write you a script for some Bactrim.”
“Thank you, Ines,” Sawyer said as she stepped down from the exam table.
“We still have some time before rounds this morning.  Why don’t you run this down to the pharmacy right now?  The sooner you start the antibiotics, the sooner you’ll start to feel better.”
<><><><><><><><><><>
“Dr. Emery, your treatment plan?” asked Dr. Ramsey.
“Pain relievers and a muscle relaxant to promote sleep.  We’ll also recommend physical therapy.”
An “ahem” could be heard from the back of the room.
Ethan’s eyes continued to scan the chart in his hands. “Something to add Dr. Brooks?”  He didn’t have to look up to know it came from her.
“Sorry, no, I apologize.  I was just clearing my throat,” she said with an unexpected hoarseness in her voice.
Aurora rolled her eyes as Ethan suggested they move on to the next patient.
The group proceeded to the next room.  As Landry presented the case, Sawyer felt a coughing fit coming on.  She tried hard to suppress it but it had become too difficult to contain. She coughed repeatedly into her elbow but found no relief.  Not wanting to cause further disruption, she gestured to Ines that she was going to step out.
With every step down the hall Sawyer felt her heart pound a little harder.  The relentless coughing made her lightheaded.  She reached the abandoned nurse’s station and with trembling hands she clumsily dispensed water into a paper cup.  As she attempted to take a sip she choked, her throat so tight she was unable to swallow.
Panic started to set in as each inhalation grew more difficult.  She looked both directions down the hall for help as she felt increasingly faint.
<><><><><><><><><><>
After answering a last-minute question from the patient’s nurse, Ethan exited the room to catch up with the interns.  As he stepped into the hall something odd caught his attention. Several yards away, a foot with a familiar shoe haphazardly stuck out from behind the nurse’s desk.
Immediately sensing something amiss, he rushed over.
“Sawyer!” he called as he threw the chart he held to the ground and rushed to her side.  She was slumped on the floor, head and shoulders barely propped up against a cabinet door.  She was gasping for breath, skin clammy, lips turning blue.
“Sawyer? What’s wrong?” he implored, checking her pulse and yanking the stethoscope from his neck.
She couldn’t speak, but terror-filled eyes met his with a desperate plea for help.
Ethan listened to her chest.  Her breaths were fast and shallow.  Her breathing severely restricted.

2.B.A Grandmaster - Part 1 Recap
Hello, everyone! With 2.B.A Grandmaster part two starting soon, I wanted to write a recap of part one for anyone who wants a refresher. It’s a little bit long, so no pressure to read if you don’t want to!! 😅  And, if you haven’t read the series at all, and want to, here’s a link for that too! (or you can just read the recap, but there are a few finer details that aren’t included, to keep things under 1k words!)
Read part one here
Tumblr media
Augusta Lucille moves into Forgotten Hollow, ready to focus on her training and become a Grandmaster Vampire. Soon, she’s greeted by her new neighbor, Xavier, and realizes that he too is a vampire.
After a couple nights in the hollow, she meets another vampire named Mara who warns her not to tell anyone that she’s part of the Lucille family.
The next morning, Augusta wakes up starving, and realizes that it won’t be long before she loses control of herself if she doesn’t have a drink of plasma. She finds Xavier’s number in the phone book and calls on him for help, and he arrives with plasma fruit for her.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to Augusta, Xavier works for a powerful vampire named Kaitlin Easley, who is already aware of Augusta’s presence in the hollow. She can tell that Xavier has been around Augusta recently, and asks him about it. He lies and says that he passed by her that evening, and Kaitlin accepts his answer and tells him to leave - however, Kaitlin knows that she’s been lied to, and begins devising a plan.
Tumblr media
After going out to harvest plasma fruit around the Hollow at Xavier’s recommendation, Augusta runs into yet another vampire - a man who introduces himself merely as Jesse. He already knows who Augusta is, and warns that she needs to be more careful before bidding her good night.
Then, Augusta sees Mara waiting for her on her porch. She says that she came to check on Augusta after seeing Xavier visiting her. Augusta informs Mara that she asked Xavier there, and Mara tells her not to trust him.
Tumblr media
Kaitlin visits a vampire named Maverick who owes her a favor, and she asks him to look into Augusta and figure out who exactly she is.
As Augusta is wallowing in self-doubt, she gets a call from her best friend Brook. They meet at Pepper’s Pub in Britechester to catch up, and Augusta feels a bit better after getting her worries off her chest.
Tumblr media
Maverick begins looking into Augusta’s background, but has to call on someone he would rather not see again to find what he’s looking for. The woman - named Octavia - tells him that he’s in over his head, and that Augusta is the granddaughter to the head of the Lucille family. Maverick doesn’t really know what this means, but Octavia tells him that she’s cutting ties with him so as to not get involved in whatever the fallout will be.
Tumblr media
Augusta sees Xavier for the first time in a while, and goes to talk to him. He says that things are complicated right now, and it’s best that they don’t spend time together. Augusta suggests that when things are less complicated, they can be friends, and he agrees.
As Xavier walks home, he laments the situation Augusta has found herself in. When Kaitlin sees him, she says that she has a mission for him.
After an awkward phone call from her pretentious Auntie Myrtle, Augusta hears a knock at the door and finds Xavier waiting for her on her porch. Despite him saying that they shouldn’t spend time together last time they spoke, he invites her to go see his friend’s band play a set on Saturday.
Wanting to trust Xavier in spite of the warnings, - and to sate her curiosity - Augusta agrees to go.
Tumblr media
When Saturday rolls around, Augusta is beginning to doubt her decision, so she leaves a voice mail for Brook, telling her where she’s going. Xavier comes to pick her up, and when they arrive, Augusta is lead to the basement, where Kaitlin is waiting for her.
She introduces herself as Kaitlin Easley, part of a powerful family with a bad reputation in the vampire community. It’s then that the puzzle pieces begin to fall into place, and Augusta realizes that her grandfather was responsible for the death of Kaitlin’s father, Lloyd Easley.
Kaitlin makes a move to attack Augusta, but before she can reach her, the fire alarm goes off. Maverick’s band member, Zoe, tells everyone to get upstairs.
Tumblr media
Once upstairs, they realize that there’s no fire. Brook and Jesse are waiting at the door for Augusta, and they escort her back to Forgotten Hollow, explaining that they pulled the fire alarm as a diversion to get her out. They go to Jesse’s house to talk, and he reveals that he’s a Grandmaster vampire, and part of the disgraced Langford family.
Tumblr media
Augusta insists that Jesse train her so that she can defend herself from Kaitlin, and he reluctantly agrees. They make a bet that if Augusta can become a Grandmaster in a year, she gets the Mansion, but if not, Jesse will cease her training.
