Someone said the opposite of love is not hate but indifference. Something about that and Stede just walking away when Izzy says "Give me your worst, Bonnet." And Izzy seeming so hurt. (Besides, of course, his mixed feelings about Edward)
Then somehow we get THIS
Paired with THIS
Ed and Izzy finally acknowledging there past and feelings towards each other.
"I have love for you"/"I loved you as best as I could"
Immanent blackbonnet/gentlebeard reunion and getting back together.
Sharing the delusions until your just as unwell as I am <3333
Ever since that damned "Our Flag Means Death" was cancelled, mind you was this show even popular outside of the US because I legitimately have never even heard of it before, a lot of you so called "allies" have been showing your true colours.
The fact that you can raise $20k, create and sign petitions, even go as far as organising a billboard for a freaking show that has KNOWN zionists in its crew, but you couldn't spend even a portion of that energy for people who are actively facing a genocide says a lot about who you are as a person. The fact that you have the nerve to go into Palestinian spaces and try to justify your actions when they call you out, really where do any of you get the audacity?
These people are grieving. They have family and friends dying and fighting for their right to even exist and you have the damn nerve to go to their inboxes and whine about a fucking gay pirate show. If you felt offended by victims calling you out for your bullshit and made statements about reconsidering your stance on the on-going genocide, then guess what? You're not as great a person as you think you are.
Standing in solidarity with Palestine isn't some sort of trend or community project that you can just opt out of. Standing in solidarity with Palestine isn't something you can brag about or hold over the heads of actual Palestinians as if having basic human decency is something to be proud of.
If your allyship is that fragile, you're not actually an ally, you don't actually care about Palestine, all you are is an opportunist looking for some way to show off your white-savior complex.
Your opinions, believe it or not, does not matter more than the opinions of the victims of a 76-year occupation. If they tell you they're uncomfortable, you LISTEN. If they call you out for your bullshit, you LISTEN. No Palestinian owes you any explanation for their pain, so can you please stop looking for validation by leaving your shitty explanations in the inboxes of Palestinians? It's really not that hard to not be an ass.
The world has bigger problems than your pirate show, so get your head out of your ass and actually do something constructive.
I’m obsessed with how queer culture is woven into ofmd so well. whether it’s ed’s full leather get-up, wee john in drag, even tiny moments like frenchie namedropping fanfiction. all of it makes the show really feel like home 🥺
The resonance of this in a queer context. Chauncey tries to reclaim Stede from Ed and gives himself the right to execute a gay man for daring to depart from the straight world—which he also tries again later on, explicitly telling Stede that he’s going to die for being an inhuman plague and defiler. And Ed hangs onto Stede and says that no, he’s mine, a part of my world now, you can’t take him back. Then it’s Lucius, the most explicit representation of queerness without shame, who stands up and starts declaring Stede a “real pirate.”
It’s this remarkable and defiant reclamation of Stede for the community that has embraced him and that he has defended and loved, telling the straight world that they can’t take him back and destroy him: “He’s ours.”
"I might not have the same bounty on my head as Luffy at the moment, but I swear to you that I'm destined to become the greatest swordsman the world has ever known. Surely that must be worth something."
Going insane over the fact that Stede always thought he was unwanted, only to literally wake up from a nightmare half-dead to find a kind man with beautiful eyes lovingly tending to him and trying to keep him alive.
Ed thought he was unlovable, only to meet a man who loves him so much he literally brings Ed out of a coma with the power of Love.
They both woke up to the one thing they'd given up on finding.
do you guys ever think about wee john teaching izzy how to do his makeup, the tender but inviolable bit of love that goes into sharing your queer self with someone who is coming into their own, the permission we give one another to be our authentic selves simply by being loud and proud about who we are, and
mary: do you know I hate the ocean? I said so just the other day
stede: what, when?
mary: WHEN WE WERE STANDING BY THE FUCKING OCEAN
one of the best lines in the entire show. the way she says it. and the fact that stede has clearly been hinting at living on a boat for god knows how long
not to undermine the emotional significance of the title on probably dozens of blackhands spotify playlists but tbh. imo. if i may.
to me, izzy’s “you told me that above all else is loyalty to my captain” reads exactly like how fang saying “you told me that the love of a pet makes a man weak” in e6 reads. which is that Blackbeard is ed’s worksona, a front he puts on to portray himself as a badass legendary masculine caricature, so sometimes ed says some random shit that sounds kinda ominous and edgy just to keep up appearances.
like in e6, ed barely even remembers saying that shit about loving a pet. the reason he gives for not letting fang keep the dog is that pets make the ship dirty. but disliking mess is not cool/badass/manly enough for The Legendary Blackbeard, so what he said to fang at the time was some bullshit about how having pets is for pussies or whatever. and you know that what he said is bullshit bc he barely remembers saying it. the dialogue and the acting in that scene all imply that the whole “the love of a pet makes a man weak” thing was literally just ed talking out of his ass.
so like. to ME it seems really likely that ed telling izzy “above all else is loyalty to your captain” was ed finding a way to say “a big part of your job is not betraying me” but in a way that sounded cool. and he wasn’t invested in it sounding cool bc izzy’s promotion was a particularly important moment to ed, he wanted it to sound cool for the same reason he needed his “no pets allowed” policy to sound cool. the facade of The Legendary Blackbeard wasn’t just for ed’s enemies, ed needed his crew to believe in it, too.
in the very first episode, buttons tells us that traditionally, pirate captains maintain the respect and obedience of their crew by successfully portraying themselves as tough, badass, manly. ed’s done this by building his reputation as a genius sailor and bloodthirsty killer, and for years he’s most likely had to interact with his crew in a way that supports that reputation.
tl;dr “above all else is loyalty to your captain” was most likely ed making up some manly-sounding bullshit to keep up appearances in the same way that “the love of a pet makes a man weak” was clearly just him talking out of his ass
anons hc: turles is gay bc his dub va is?? thoughts??
So I'm completely opposed to that line of reasoning- the real life person is an actor who can act in various roles, and suggesting that the details of their personal life should inform our reading of a character they play seems.. problematic. For a lot of reasons.
However
I also dont see anything wrong with interpretting Turles as gay (or any of the characters as any brand of queer for that matter) and do think this particular line delivery is uuhh..
so in love with ed’s stubbly short beard. don’t know if I want to make out with him about it or have one like it. who knows. probably both. definitely both.
