Domaystic is the combination of “domestic” and “May” and it's a prompt event run on May based on the domestic trope: anything inside, outside, beside the house or that has that normalcy flavor of everyday life.

There's one prompt for each day for a total of 31 prompts + 5 alternatives with an exclamation point at the end (predictable!).

You can share your work on any platform you like. If you share it on tumblr and tag the blog, I’ll reblog it.

Combine more prompts together? That’s fine but I will reblog the entry only once here on tumblr.

Combine these prompts with another event? Fine too.

You don’t have to do all the prompts to join the event. Do the ones you enjoy.

The event is consistently checked upon during the month of May, but in case you want to share your creation at a later date, you can. I just reblog on a lower pace after May is over.

As for the reblogs, last year I gave myself a bit of an headache, so this time I’d like to try it this way: once the day of the corresponding prompt comes, people will post their work and then I’ll reblog it when that day comes for me too. Does it make sense? I hope so. I’ll miss the world clocks but let’s just trust each other.

Taylor Swift Meets Hockey RPF: A 2022 Advent Calendar

Hello friends. I’m so excited to announce the advent calendar you never knew you wanted: the countdown of the 25 ficciest Taylor Swift songs, specifically as they apply to hockey RPF!

We’ve long been aware here in the fic community that Ms. Swift’s lyrics provide excellent titles. But just how ficcy are her songs, really? I’ve set out to answer that question via an extremely scientific* ranking project that combines three things I love dearly: hockey RPF, Taylor Swift songs, and making ranked lists of things.

*It was not even a little bit scientific

If you share any of these interests, you may be asking the following questions:

Q. I’m so excited! But what does this advent calendar actually consist of?

A. What a good question. Every day I’ll do a write-up of one of the songs, starting with the least ficcy of the 25 on 12/1 and getting ficcier each day up until Christmas, when the ficciness will reach its peak and we’ll explode with the joy of repressed men pining for each other.

Q. Are you actually going to write a story for each song?

A. Hahaha no. But I am going to pick a pairing that I think fits the song the best and say a little about how their story would go, and if I get intrigued enough by any of it I might write the story eventually.

Q. You’re going to let us know which song lyrics you’d use to title the story, though, right?

A. Of course.

Q. How can I keep track of these posts?

A. This post will act as a master post as soon as I’ve started the countdown.

Q. How about a playlist so we can listen along?

A. I got you right here! It’s empty now, and I’ll add songs as soon as they’re revealed.

Q. But wait! There’s so much variety in fanfiction, even just within hockey RPF. What does “ficciest” actually mean?

A. The ficciness of each song has been determined via the extremely objective method of me thinking about it really, really hard. I’m not aiming for all of fandom here; my frame of reference is men’s hockey RPF, specifically slash, specifically the kinds of stories I most enjoy reading/writing.

Q. Isn’t that kind of arbitrary?

A. Shhhhhh.

Q. Okay but that means pining is going to be front and center, right?

A. Absolutely it does.

Q. So…you actually went through all of Taylor Swift’s discography for this?

A. Let’s just say my Spotify Wrapped is a little extreme this year.

Q. Aside from screwing your Spotify stats all to hell, did you come across any trends in the ficciness of her music that you’d like to share with us?

A. I’m so glad you asked! As part of determining the top 25, I rated every Taylor Swift song in her 10 studio albums (Taylor’s Version where available) on a scale of 0-10 for applicability to hockey RPF. Her albums ranked as follows:

Reputation (2017): 4.79 average ficciness rating

Lover (2019): 4.39

Taylor Swift (2006): 4

Speak Now (2010): 3.88

Red (2012): 3.55

Folklore (2020): 3.41

Fearless (2008): 3.4

Midnights (2022): 3.3

Evermore (2020): 3

1989 (2014): 2.77

Honestly I was pretty surprised by how this shook out. I expected ficciness to be at its peak in her first few albums, but nope. It was reasonably high at the start, and it did decline as she transitioned from country to pop with 1989, but then it shot up to new heights in Reputation and Lover. These are, not coincidentally, the two albums she wrote during and just after the start of her relationship with her current partner. This makes sense to me: the pining of the early albums is all well and good, but there are also a lot of songs about breakups, which did not do well in the ficciness ratings. After Lover, things went a little more as expected: the ficciness leveled off again, and her three most recent albums all ended up in the bottom half. Here's a fancy graph of the results:

That said, averages don’t tell you everything. Her first album is less ficcy than Lover on average but does far better in the top 25. Folklore is above Fearless by average rating, but it only has one song in the top 25 versus Fearless’s four. In fact, there were three albums that had only one song make it in, and 1989, least ficcy of them all, managed to squeak in twice. So “average ficciness” and “number of extremely ficcy songs” turned out to be very different stats.

Q. That's fun. Do you have any more charts?

A. I sure do! Here's one I made of how many songs came in at each rating from 1-10:

Basically, there were a lot of songs that weren't ficcy even a little bit, declining in number towards the mediocrely ficcy at 5. Then the count started going up again with songs that had enough ficcy content to be considered but maybe didn't quite hit the nail on the head. There were only a few songs that were real bullseyes.

When it came to narrowing things down, everything 7 and above got further consideration. About half the 7s made it, and almost all the 8s (there were a few I left out for various reasons). All the 9s and 10s got in.

Q. You’ve infected my brain with this, and now I’m curious how you’d rate this one song of hers I’m thinking about.

A. Shoot me an ask! If it isn’t in the top 25 I’ll answer with the ficciness rating I gave it and why.

While we are loosely on the topic of IndyCar, I've been getting into other racing series and am planning to actively follow some more this year and the culture shock as a fan is real. I can actually ask questions about IndyCar and FE without getting some smart ass "DTS fan" response, coincidentally with them still being unable to answer my question themselves though. Generally people just stay in their lanes and focus on the teams/drivers they support instead of wasting so much time and energy on the teams/drivers they passionately hate. Death threats and harassment aren't normalized. Maybe the haters aren't the only ones who want to see my favs get "demoted" to IndyCar or FE because they're genuinely so much more chill to follow as a fan. With F1, you can do all the blocking and unfollowing not just on Tumblr, but on websites with a lot of grown 50+ year olds and still come across some of the most file shit you've ever encountered. I've met some great friends through F1 and as a STEM student, love the engineering aspect, but the 24/7, 365 fighting and drama amongst fans doesn't make it fun to follow, it gets old and annoying pretty quick.

in all honesty, it's that lack of exposure thing. people are excited to see other people getting into the smaller series we like cus there aren't very many of us, innit. gotta have people to blorbopost with. love to get the moots in on my nonsense.

the sheer scale of F1 fandom has always been one of its issues, like football fandom. there's no sort of curated community areas where everyone's decent to each other cus there's so many people involved. and there's lots of ways in which the media is responsible for that

I'm glad you mentioned the 50+ year olds cus honestly, it's always been this way. and particularly if you're from any of the demographics not assumed to be somehow naturally an authority on F1. I say 'any of the demographics' - you know exactly the one that gets the pass and then the rest of us can waste our lives proving we know anything and drive ourselves insane or just accept you have to love it in spite of it all.

ultimately, it's on F1 to actually call off the dogs in the sense you can absolutely start effective comms campaigns that address harassment and exclusion. you can breed healthy dialogue, you can put a less combative and rage-fuelled version of the sport out there. but what's happening right now is doing numbers for a series that - and remember this was as recently as 2018 - was absolutely on its knees.

shrinking, ageing viewership was impacting sponsorship while costs escalated, manufacturers all threatening to pull out, brands questioning the point of being involved, media coverage that was shrivelling up and dying, no social and digital presence to speak of, very little visibility outside specialist channels.

F1 has, by a combination of luck and a sort of 'try pressing every button at once and see if something works' managed to reverse those fortunes and now the influencers it didn't understand 5 years ago are clamouring to get in the paddock. that's a good thing! F1 desperately needs attention or else, like a Tumblr user, it will literally die because sponsors are only interested in paying for exposure and F1 needs such vast amounts of money.

so: I'd love F1 to have more fans. my friends who've suddenly got into or back into it the last few years rock. but with great capacity for sponsorship deals comes a huge hot mess of governance, calendar bloat and subterranean discourse.

although Extremely Online F1 Fandom is only a small slice of it all, regardless, which I kinda try to remember.

main thing is: enjoy things how you want to! engage with and boost content you like! block everyone annoying, life is too short.

(I genuinely wish more people would just block me when they find me annoying on Twitter or whatever rather than turn it into a strange obsession. think I'm an idiot? cool, block me. massively more peaceful for us all)

AO3 Wrapped 2022

Tagged by multiple people for multiple things but I think @radio-chatter was the one who tagged me for AO3 wrapped (sorry I’ve been…uh distracted, busy and sick which has not been a good combination for getting around to inboxes or replies). Thanks for tagging me everyone—it really does make me smile to see people thinking of me.

Works Published: total or things that got a chapter yeeted this calendar year? I have 21 works that have had at least a chapter published in 2022. My total number of works (as of December 22nd) is 46 on AO3.

Word Count: Sadly I don’t track this from year to year so I’m just going by my total word count on AO3 stats page: 1,277,012. Which wow. I am wordy. I am vaguely remembering I was right around the million word mark last year but I might be hallucinating that from all the cold medication I’m on.

Hits: Again I don’t track this (both for my sanity and the hit my vanity would take on the wide margin swings for my favorite pieces vs things that are just in big fandoms). According to the stats page my total hits is 131,627.

Bookmarks: That I made or others made? My total bookmarks (of fics I liked enough to add them to my personal collection) is 1,009. The total number of times my works have been bookmarked by someone is 2,487.

Most Popular by Kudos: Shocking nobody, this is Family, Familia, ‘Ohana at 1,373. Again I do not keep track of my stats other than posts like this one.

Most Hits: Also Family, Familia, ‘Ohana at 38,202. It’s in a popular fandom with a popular pairing. *shrugs*.

Longest: Well…. Does this have to have updated this year? My longest work ever remains An Andromeda Tale at 673,530 words. If we’re talking this year… it’s FFO at 120,488 words (it beats out the Outlaw and the Cartel Boss by 15k published words—even if I think my unpublished word count would make Outlaw overtake FFO)

Shortest: Ha. For once this is both this year and ever. Blackmail Material is 334 words.

Most Comments: An Andromeda Tale and FFO are tied at 127 comment threads total each. Again, I don’t really track my stats year by year but I would probably say that if we’re just talking this year it’s probably FFO as I haven’t updated AAT in over a year. Just assume I am wearing a very ashamed face when I say that.

Fic that made me cry: er… none of mine. I have been known to shed a tear or two reading someone else’s angst fic but I try not to emotionally damage myself while writing—ie I take a break if I’m getting too worked up. If we’re talking tears of frustration over how something isn’t working…. Yeah…. Um…. We’re not going to talk about that. *whispers: ALL OF THEM*

Fic that made me smile: All of them and yet none of mine. Cackle—yes, of course when I put in a detail that I think is particularly devious. Sighs of relief that I’m done? Yes. Smiling…. Maybe.

Coming in 2023: finishing one of my longer works? Adding at least a chapter to all the new WIPS I added because of Mreyder week. I really need to finish some wips in 2023. I have also been vaguely toying with a complete re-write of AAT and chopping it up into more manageable chunks but that’s going to be a huge project…. So maybe I should just finish some of the smaller wips first. Promise Me You Won’t Let Me has about 2-3 chapters left which are 1/2 written so it’s looking likely for the first part of the year. Also want to get a big chunk of To Follow done. First quarter 2023 should see at least one chapter of FFO and I want to finish Mana’olana by spring break. I’m also trying to get certain things on regular updating schedules: To Catch a Fallen Star (Sterek Stardust fic), Outlaw, Cousin Harvey and Jackal.

it's never too early for halloween!

which also means it's never too early to plan for kinktober. i was feeling inspired so i decided to make my own prompts and calendar this year. feel free to use with credit! i'll mostly be writing for naruto fandom, but ya'll can draw or write original works or other fandoms using this idc lol. posting a full 6 months before the start date so anyone who wants to participate has lots of time to prep. feel free to pick and choose, combine prompts, only do some days and not others, whatever you want. i'm doing this as a challenge to myself to get something out for all 31 days!

THE ANIMATED ANAKIN (#201, MAR 2021)

From swinging a pencil in place of a lightsaber to wearing retro shoes on a live-action set, Matt Lanter takes Insider on his Star Wars journey from The Clone Wars to The Mandalorian. Words: Bryan Cairns

“I actually had no idea I was auditioning for Anakin Skywalker,” says Matt Lanter of landing one of the lead roles in Lucasfilm’s animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008- 2014, 2020). “They told me the role I was reading for was a character named ‘Deak Starkiller.’ I did a quick online search but there wasn’t much out there, so I really had no idea. I remember Dave Filoni suggesting I give them my best combination of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, and that’s what got me the job. Obviously, there’s a lot of Solo swagger in The Clone Wars Anakin, a lot more than Anakin in the films.”

The show debuted as a feature-length movie in theaters in 2008, and ran for six seasons from 2008 to 2014, with a seventh and final season arriving on Disney+ early in 2020. Lanter, who is now 37, marvels that his Star Wars adventure has lasted so long.

“When I booked that job, I had no idea what was about to happen for the next decade and more of my life, and counting,” admits Lanter. “All these years later, I have so many fond memories of working on The Clone Wars. My castmates, the producers, and everybody at Lucasfilm, they’re like family to me. I made lifelong friends from making that show.”

Despite a six-year hiatus before the final season aired, Star Wars remained a constant fixture in the actor’s calendar. “I’ve traveled around the United States doing conventions with my castmates, and this may sound cheesy, but the Star Wars fandom feels like family now too. I love going to cons and meeting fans who watch the show with their kids. There’s so much in Star Wars to love, and it’s so inclusive of everybody.”

Set in the period between the movies Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), The Clone Wars pitched Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and his comrades-in-arms against legions of battle droids, the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and the ruthless Sith. Lanter took on the role originated in the live-action movies by Canadian-born actor Hayden Christensen, but the long-running nature of the television series allowed him to expand on his predecessor’s take on Anakin.

“I went to Skywalker Ranch and sat down with George Lucas, and we talked about the character and where we wanted to go with him,” recalls Lanter. “It was a conscious decision not to copy Hayden’s performance. I would say there are influences, of course. Certain cadences and things like that. But I definitely did my own thing. I added more bravado. We made Anakin a little more charismatic, because we needed the character to take us through multiple seasons of storytelling. We wanted to show Anakin as this brave star pilot, this amazing Jedi, who was charming and funny at times. Hayden didn’t get the chance to do that in the films, because he only had so many minutes of screen time to move his character from Anakin the bratty teenager to Darth Vader, the most hated villain of all time.”

Into The Dark

Unlike live theater or on a movie set where multiple actors share a stage, it’s often the case that performers might find themselves with only a microphone for company when recording voices for animation. It was a different matter with The Clone Wars, as Lanter explains.

“It’s kind of weird. Sometimes you never even see your co-stars. I did an animated feature once where I had a love interest in the film, but to this day I have never met the other actor,” he exclaims. “But with The Clone Wars, Dave Filoni loved to get all the actors together in one room. It was like an old radio play. We would go through each scene, maybe a couple of times, and then we’d move on. We would record a 24-minute episode in three hours. After that episode was done, we would spend half an hour on pickups for previous episodes. Maybe there was a slight animation change and the vocals needed to back that up. Maybe the showrunners thought the characters would be closer, but in the final animation they’d decided they were going to be 30-feet apart and yelling at each other. So, we would go back and pickup things like that.”

The relationship between the voice artist and their microphone is not as static as one might expect. Lanter admits to sometimes getting lively and energetic in the studio, depending on what a given scene called for. “I think all voice actors do things differently,” suggests Lanter. “Some will sit down in their chair. Personally, I always stand up. I like to move a little bit, but I wouldn’t be dancing about or anything like that. You can’t really move off mic too much, but occasionally both Ashley Eckstein (who plays Ahsoka Tano in The Clone Wars) and I would grab a pencil if we had to be swinging a lightsaber around, in order to give our bodies some motion. You can hear that movement come through in your voice.”

One such physical moment in the opening arc of Season Seven saw Anakin’s darker side brought to the fore.

“I love those first few episodes with the Bad Batch,” Lanter says. “I thought they were so unique and interesting, and so cool. And there was a great moment for Anakin, where we saw him get really angry at Admiral Trench, and then put his lightsaber through Trench’s chest. I know that fans love those foreshadowing Vader moments, and so do I, because it offers that connectivity to Darth Vader and shows Anakin’s dangerous lack of self-control.

“Dave and I were always very specific about those moments, about how dark Anakin was going to get,” he continues. “Especially in the last couple of seasons, we were definitely conscious of saying, ‘Okay, this is a Vader moment. We are going there. We are doing this.’ They were done very purposefully. With Anakin, especially in the final season after putting the saber through Trench’s chest and flippantly saying something like ‘Have a nice day,’ it showed his mood swings, his ups and downs. How he can suddenly turn extremely violent and then, two seconds later, he’s back to being Jedi General Skywalker. I think that’s so Anakin.”

Live-Action Lanter

A few months before the final season of The Clone Wars was released on Disney+, Lanter made a surprise cameo appearance in Season One of The Mandalorian. He portrayed Davan, an ill-fated lieutenant in the New Republic Correctional Corps charged with guarding a prison ship packed with galactic miscreants. Forced to make a stand against a gang of mercenary infiltrators, poor Davan met a sorry end at the sharp end of a Twi’lek dagger. The role marked Lanter’s first live-action appearance in the Star Wars franchise.

“Man, that was awesome. I’m so thankful to Dave Filoni for making that happen,” says Lanter. “I got a call from my agent, and he said, ‘Hey, The Mandalorian wants to know if you want to come down and do this thing.’ I was like, ‘What? Oh, okay. That’s Dave! That’s funny!’ So, I texted Dave and said, ‘Of course, yeah!’ Who wouldn’t want to do that? And it was great. I got to be on a live-action Star Wars set, actually inside a transport ship. I was like a kid in a candy store. It was awesome, and I’m really glad the fans loved it.

“It was an amazing experience for me to be there,” Lanter adds. “I got to work with Jon Favreau, and, of course, working with Dave on live-action was cool in a different way. I’ve known him for years and years as a voice director and executive producer on our show. Dave is an amazing storyteller. He knows Star Wars. He understands characters. I went to visit the set once or twice when I wasn’t working, and got to see him directing, and it was amazing to see him in this new environment, in this new role. I messaged him a couple of months ago and told him, ‘Maybe it’s kind of weird. You hired me, but I’m so proud of you and where you’ve gone, and to see all your accomplishments.’ Dave has great things coming for him.

Lanter also enjoyed wearing his first Star Wars costume, a New Republic soldier uniform loosely inspired by the rebel trooper gear from Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), complete with familiar visored helmet, chunky belt, and disco-era footwear. “My 70’s retro shoes were awesome,” Lanter laughs. “And Mayfield’s line about them, ‘Nice shoes. Matches his belt,’ that was not scripted. That was something Bill Burr threw in there, and they kept it in. It ended up being a fun little extra moment, where they pan down to my shoes. I had a great time, although I couldn’t tell anyone about it. That was the hardest part. As with all things Star Wars that I do, I can end up going a year and a half without telling anyone anything.” Despite The Clone Wars reaching its inevitable conclusion, finally synching with the events of Revenge of the Sith, Lanter isn’t entirely prepared to hang up his lightsaber and say goodbye to the Chosen One. “I’ve loved working with Dave, and with the whole Star Wars family,” Lanter concludes. “It’s been such an amazing experience for me as an actor. The Clone Wars is perfection in my eyes. I’m certainly not ready to put Anakin away forever.”

ANAKIN, MEET… ANAKIN?! WHAT HAPPENED WHEN TWO SKYWALKERS FINALLY MET?

“Obviously, that’s a question I get asked all the time,” says Matt Lanter. “Everybody wants to know if I’ve met Hayden Christensen, and what he thought of my performance in The Clone Wars.” That question was finally answered in 2019, when both actors were booked to appear at Star Wars Celebration Chicago. “I had never met him before,” Lanter confirms, “and he couldn’t have been any nicer. Wherever we’re doing the convention stuff, there’s a nice green room in the back of the convention center where they set up snacks for all the Star Wars actors and talent. Hayden was back there, and he came up to me and said hello. He told me, ‘I love what you guys are doing. Thanks for keeping Star Wars alive.’ We got our picture taken together, which I know a lot of people loved when they saw it online.”

COSTUME CONUNDRUM: WHICH IS COOLER, CLOAKS OR CAPES?

Voicing the animated version of Anakin Skywalker meant Matt Lanter never got to wear his character’s signature Jedi robes, but that doesn’t mean he does not have an opinion on the practicality of Jedi attire.

“Those Jedi cloaks are kind of cool,” says the actor when Insider asked if he has a preference. “I’m going to say cloaks, because I’ve actually had to wear a cape for some parts, and sometimes a cape is not great in a fight scene. I have dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi with a cloak for Halloween, though” he says, adding, “I already had a monk costume and repurposed it the next year. People still thought I was dressed as a monk, though.”

One of the things I love most about participating in fandom in this moment is the vast variety of different kinds of creativity. From fic writers to podficcers, artists and embroiderers, reccers and ficbinders, there are so many amazing ways to make. In my eyes, @crazybutgood embodies that kind of generous creativity. From rec lists to podfic to writing to stunning origami, I find myself blown away again and again by CBG’s brilliant approach to fandom — she inspires me to find new ways to celebrate, to share, and to make.

do u ever think that mare and cal had trouble conceiving? I love the head cannon where they try for awhile but then are convinced that being red and silver it won't work (both obviously very upset but hiding their disappointment to each other) and then finally mare gets pregnant when they've given up. Would u ever write a fic about it?

Okay, so yes, 100% yes. They have trouble. Scientifically, it is entirely possible that they would STRUGGLE with a capitol S to conceive. Here’s my headcanon that will 100% be a fic someday:

How it starts: Mare is the one to make the decision. It’s the dead of night, closer to 1 in the morningish. She and Cal are not married yet, they are waiting for thing to sort of calm down a bit more before that. But Bree’s wife just had a baby. Julian and Sara had a baby like a year ago. Ruth Barrow is low key side eyeing Mare and keeps dropping little hints that babies come in batches.

She rolls over and watches Cal for a little bit thinking it over, stressing over whether the decision is really hers of if she is letting outside things influence her. But then she thinks about Clara and how much she loves that munchkin (lets be real, Mare should have spent WAY more time around that baby during Broken Throne? I’m actually incredibly bitter that she didn’t. That is her favorite brother’s daughter.) And she thinks about how much she keeps putting off things in her life because she’s afraid of the future, afraid of what people might do and things that are out of her control. Then she grabs Cal’s arm, scaring the shit out of him, and just says: “I want a baby.” Plain and simple, no real pretext or anything. He’s obviously half asleep so he’s like: uh, okay that’s nice. Then she gives him The Mare Look™️ and he’s like: Oh. Oh you want one like now... like right now? And that’s the first night they try.

The middle: It does not go well. 6 months later, nothing. 8 months later, nothing. Mare is slowly starting to stress and they haven’t told ANYONE that they’re trying. 1 year later, still nothing. Mare actually starts doing the calendars at this point (for all the younguns in this fandom, ovulation calendars). Like they are on a schedule trying to get pregnant. It’s exhausting, they actually start fighting about it. It’s not going that well.

The middle still: 1.5 years after that first night, Bree and his wife announce baby number 2. Mare is actually a bitter, jealous gremlin the whole pregnancy. She literally goes into panic mode too, trying desperately to get pregnant. (like she’s on a mission. She’s drinking teas and do all the weird shit she can get her hands on in books)

Then it happens.

She comes back from the front lines and actually cries holding the test because she really truly thought it would never happen.

The middle continued: Spoiler alert...it doesn’t go well. 1 week later, she loses it. It’s no ones fault, but Mare blames herself. Blames the fact that she traveled to the Lakeland front line and came back not knowing she was 2 months pregnant and is convinced she miscarried because she was fighting. She tries to start up the whole process again, and is like “double time efforts, this is going to work. I will make it work because I’m low key a failure if I can’t do this.” (She obviously does not mention the last part, because well... she’s mare) and Cal is just not about the process anymore. He was all for it when he though they were doing it because she wanted a baby, and wanted to start a family with him, but now it’s looking like an obsession and it kinda scares him. They have a massive fight about it, so bad that he goes back to the States for a few weeks and everyone thinks they’re done for the last time (cause remember, they’re not married at this point). When people ask what happened, Mare won’t tell them. When people ask, Cal he won’t tell them. They actually dont talk to each other for a full month. It’s looking really bad. People are very concerned about both of them.

Spoiler alert again: Cal comes back (cause he always does). They have another long talk, and Cal finally gets her to tell him what she’s feeling. Obviously he feels horrible that he left without getting this out of her, but then again, Mare would not have told him at that point because she was just not ready to tell him. But after their month apart she is ready to sort her feelings and ideas with him. *Insert low key tearful hug where they’re holding each other super tight*.

The end of the middle: Mare goes to Sara and finally talks to her about it. Sara talks to Julian who talks to his buddies studying the whole Silver, Ardent, Red phenomena. They finally find someone who has been studying this stuff. He feels horrible telling them that because of genetics, how their different mutations operate, etc. they may never be able to conceive, but there is of course always a small chance they might. But it would have to be the perfect combination of their genetics and that may never happen.

Mare is obviously pretty upset. She’s quiet for a couple days, just sort of sorting through things. She finally tells her family, tells them that it will most likely never happen, and that they don’t want to talk about it. Everyone is probably more supportive than necessary, but it’s Mare’s family, they’re low key too supportive for their own good.

The End: Things go “back to normal”. Mare and Cal get married finally. And the whole time the two of them are looking into adopting. It’s obviously not an easy process either, and people aren’t too keen to let them adopt because they’re both running around the front lines at different times and thats just... not the best thing ever. Anyway, they start fucking around again (literally and figuratively). No expectations, nothing, just doing it for the fun of it.

Spoiler alert: it ends up being okay. (: Mare doesn't find out until 4 months in, but as soon as she does, low key gets a little PTSD and walks on egg shells for a few weeks, waiting for it to all fall apart. She doesn’t tell Cal, she doesn’t tell anyone. It’s Farley that figures it out. (; And when Mare tells Cal you can bet he just wraps his arms around her, picks her up and spins her around (i cannot resist this concept, he’s so much taller than her and the image of him wrapping his arms around her legs and lifting her up while she laughs is just too wonderful). Then they walk on eggs shells for another month, but at that point Mare pops and there is just no hiding the fact, and they’re so nervous and then before they know it, she's in labor and baby Barrow Calore #1 is born. Mare refuses to let go of her for almost two hours when she gets to hold her, but when she does it’s to let Cal hold her, and he actually gets really emotional holding her. And they’re just so happy, and it’s so heart warming, and anyway I’m done.

So that was long as shit and I practically told everyone the whole fic, but that’s my headcanon in a very large nutshell. XD

Okay, so, I just replied to a post with this information, but now that I’m thinking too much about this, I want to run my theory past other people, especially since I can sometimes miss fine details and other people might’ve picked up something I missed. So, for the consideration of the fandom, here is my working timeline of How Shit Went Down With Miranda And Rose (based off the information that I know is in the game and a healthy dose of speculation). Under a cut for length (as it usually is with me).

Unknown point after Biohazard: The BSAA is infiltrated by a mole from the Connections. I don’t think the exact timeline on this matters; the presence of the mole is the most important thing.

Now, this is speculation on my part, but I’m assuming they moved to Europe sometime after Mia found out she was pregnant (which probably would’ve been late 2019/early 2020). There’s nothing concrete that I know of to prove this, but a) Ethan always discusses the move as something they did to give Rose a chance at a normal life, b), they’re established enough to have a doctor in the area, work for Ethan, and be mostly unpacked (aside from that one junk room they haven’t deep cleaned), BUT c) it’s recent enough that the move, combined with the pregnancy, still feels very sudden and new to Ethan.

Unknown point during Mia’s pregnancy: Mia starts having her suspicions about Rose being different. We can establish this based off the Benevientio House hallucinations, where the radio plays Mia having a startled reaction to Rose having such a strong kick.

Aug. 2, 2020: Rose is born (established by the Medical Checkup you can find in the Winters house at the start of the game).

Unknown point between Aug. 2, 2020 and Feb. 6, 2021: Rose undergoes some test, and the results mention that “Results for additional fungal pathogen tests will be provided by BSAA.” (Same Medical Checkup File that establishes her date of birth.) If I had to guess, this all probably happened in late January, but this is more speculation. The file isn’t dated, unfortunately, but based off the evidence below, late January makes sense.

Early February: The fungal tests come back positive. Again, this is nothing we have a solid date for, but based off evidence in the next bullet point, I’m gonna guess early February. This is most likely when the Connections mole found out about Rose (though put a pin in that thought).

Feb. 6 (?), 2021: Ethan and Mia have an argument that is started by a phone call from her doctor. The call, specifically, says that they want to discuss some “test results” next Thursday (possibly Feb. 11 if we go off the IRL calendar). This is the reason why I think the fungal tests came back as positive in early February. The question mark is because I’m not clear on if the fight takes place on the 6th or if it took place the day before; Ethan’s diary entry discussing what I assume is the same fight is dated the 6th, but that doesn’t mean he wrote it the same day. I should also note for clarity that the flashback fight and the diary fight might NOT be the same fight, but the mention of wanting to discuss test results for Rose leads me to believe they are. (It’s possible those test results are the ones we see in the checkup file, in which case the flashback fight could’ve happened earlier? In that case, I’d say flashback fight is sometime the week of Jan. 24, and they receive the checkup results Feb. 4, which takes place two days before the diary fight. However, I still think Feb. 5/6 is the best start of the gap I’ll discuss in the next point due to some differences in behavior between Miranda and Mia, again see below.)

This gap right here between Feb. 5/6 and the start of the game is most likely when Miranda had Mia kidnapped and took her place. The most concrete evidence I have of this is the difference in temperament between Mia in the flashback fight and Miranda-As-Mia; Real Mia is definitely defensive, frustrated, and more in line with the “exploding” Ethan discusses in his diary. That’s a stark contrast to how Miranda behaves, namely dismissive (”[Dulvey] was so long ago”) and condescending (”yOu’Re BeInG pArAnOiD”). She snaps at him once, but she’s mostly just bitchy (not the same thing as explosive). Flashback!Mia also expresses concern about Ethan that Miranda wouldn’t have bothered expressing (I have another post covering this if anyone is interested), and also, Ethan probably would’ve noticed eventually, so a shorter time span makes sense.

Feb. 8, 2021: The start of the game; Miranda fakes her death, then attacks the convoy carrying her, Rose, and Ethan (Ethan’s first entry in the diary he keeps throughout the game is dated at dawn on Feb. 9, and Chris shows up at dinnertime, so things really kick off on Feb. 8).

Now the reason I wanted you to put a pin in the “most likely when the Connections learned about Rose” thing is that we don’t have a clear idea as to when Mia realized Ethan was probably a mold hybrid, or how she confirmed her suspicions. If it was something she did on the sly through the BSAA, that might’ve tipped off the Connections mole, and lead them to more closely watch her during the pregnancy. Even without that, they might have suspected something would be up with Rose based off everything else going on, but it was only once she was confirmed as a mold hybrid that Miranda made a move to take her.

As to why Miranda didn’t make a move earlier...most likely she knew she had to be careful, since the BSAA (and most importantly, Chris Freakin’ Redfield) was monitoring the family. That and she probably wanted to wait until she knew for sure Rose was worth the time and effort before striking. Honestly, you could make the argument that she replaced Mia early in the day on Feb. 8, as the game taking place over two days would account for Mia’s roughed up appearance when Chris finds her, but I see nothing wrong with leaving the gap open to interpretation so people can tweak it depending on their fanfic needs.

Also, full disclosure, I am aware that the Resident Evil fandom dot com wiki presents a slightly different timeline than mine, but their sources aren’t cited, so it’s probably another fandom reconstruction that viewed the evidence differently than me. I am open to criticism or alternate theories, though NGL, I fully expect that there’s never going to be a concrete fully “canon” picture of what happened because video game timelines are a hot mess in general and I’m not sure how much thought Capcom put into this other than “this is what happened, exact dates and details don’t matter, just go fight the big monster lady.”

A Fresh Canvas: Incomplete Preview

Quite some time ago I did a silly little thread on Twitter, and I’ve always wanted to take that and actually make something out of it. Well it was a little harder than expected, but it’s coming along!

When I have the entire thing done I will be uploading it to AO3, but for now it seemed seasonally appropriate to at least drop this.

I wanted to have this posted yesterday but festivities kept me busier than expected! Story is below the cut. Keep in mind that this is still technically a rough draft, and will receive its final beta pass before the full story hits AO3.

(Tentative) Title: A Fresh Canvas Fandom: Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System by MXTX Rating: G, No Warnings Apply Summary: Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are neighbors in the same modern apartment complex who, despite looking similar enough to be mistaken for each other, couldn’t be any more different. Or so they think.

Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan were neighbors in the same apartment complex. They lived on the same floor, in the same hall, and were often mistaken for one another due to this proximity combined with how similar their appearances were.

But there were key differences, as both would readily point out to their neighbors. Shen Jiu’s hair hung shy of his shoulders while Shen Yuan’s was shorter and lighter in tone.

And still the mix-ups kept happening, particularly if they were at some distance or facing away. The misunderstanding would very rarely last past the first glance since Shen Jiu would snap and take immediate offense, and Shen Yuan would just sigh and say, "Sorry, wrong one."

Shen Yuan had no idea why Shen Jiu got so offended over it. Surely he didn’t look that bad, come on!

The neighbors eventually started learning to look at the clothes first--or to at least look for Shen Yuan’s thick-rimmed glasses.

Both men carried and dressed themselves so differently. Shen Yuan dressed in hoodies and jeans--well, if he was planning on going any further than the mailbox, that was. Otherwise why bother changing out of pajamas or sweatpants?

On the other hand, Shen Jiu didn’t touch anything that wasn’t from a known designer.

Shen Jiu spent proudly--and why shouldn’t he? Because he at least earned his money!

That Shen Yuan kid down the hall? Rumor was that his parents were paying his rent and he'd never had a real job in his life.

But because he never went out, Shen Yuan was one of the only people still hanging around the apartment complex when Shen Jiu went around knocking during a major holiday.

In Shen Jiu’s arms was a box containing two fluffy black pups.

Shen Yuan’s eyes widened at the sight of them and he completely forgot to greet his neighbor until Shen Jiu cleared his throat. The dogs were like little storm clouds with feet and stubby tails, staring back at him with big black eyes. One started wagging its tail with such vigor that its whole back end wiggled about.

It took Shen Jiu a moment to find his voice as he followed, such was the state that his neighbor had chosen to answer the door in. Hideous cucumber-print pajama pants, a tacky anime shirt covered in snack crumbs, and unkempt hair had greeted him. But the continuous movement of the box in his arms reminded him of his mission.

“I found... ” Shen Jiu shifted the box in indication as Shen Yuan shut the door behind them, “these, out by the garbage.”

Shen Yuan blinked as the other passed by him, “Have you tried calling any nearby shelters?”

“Of course I have,” Shen Jiu scoffed at the implication that he was so simple. “You try getting a real person on the phone today, though. It’s impossible. I could only leave messages.”

Shen Yuan put a finger to his lips, “Oh, right. Today is…” Glancing at a wall calendar almost as ugly as his shirt he nodded, “Right. Right.”

Did this kid ever so much as leave the building? Shen Jiu was starting to wonder. Shen Yuan dressed like he’d just rolled out of bed in the latter part of the daytime. And he hadn’t realized it was a major holiday. And then there were the countless odorous takeout boxes covering every available surface in his apartment.

Shen Jiu wrinkled his nose but still asked in spite of his rapidly growing doubts, “You don’t know anyone who can take these little mutts in for a day or two, do you?”

Shen Yuan shook his head and heard Shen Jiu sigh. His neighbor set the box down to give his arms a rest… but Shen Yuan couldn’t seem to rip his attention away from one of the pups. It hadn’t stopped staring at him, or shaking its fluffy little behind, for a moment.

“What if we take them in?”

Shen Jiu’s tone was flat, “What.”

Shen Yuan picked up the excited little pup and it immediately started wiggling in his grasp. Not struggling, however--just trying to get closer to his face, paws waving in the air and its little pink tongue darting out to reach for him even though it was still well outside of range. He had to fight back the urge to laugh at the silly little storm cloud.

“The building allows us to have one animal per unit, right?” Shen Yuan shrugged, “so what if we each took one, even just long enough to find them new homes?”

Shen Jiu frowned. Taking in a dog, or really any animal, had never been on his agenda. He liked his nice clean apartment and intact furniture unlike a certain someone. Plus he was more partial to cats. He moved his gaze from the overexcited animal back to the box. Though the pups looked identical on the surface this one was clearly the calmer one. It looked up at his scowling face but put forth no such ridiculous display… thank goodness.

Who knew? Maybe Shen Yuan’s idea wasn’t so bad. And if it was, it was only a temporary arrangement, in the end. He might be able to get rid of the animal as soon as tomorrow if it was truly intolerable.

Tentatively, Shen Jiu reached out to pick up the dog…

And felt tiny teeth close around his fingers.

Jerking his hand backwards, Shen Jiu sneered down at the animal. “What, you ungrateful little beast!”

Shen Yuan finally stopped cooing at his own pup to look over and said, “Maybe he doesn’t like your cologne?”

“And what’s wrong with my cologne?” Shen Jiu snapped, voice raising.

Stepping back, “Nothing, nothing!”

“It was a gift, you know!”

Shen Yuan barely avoided tripping over a haphazard stack of game cases as he kept moving away. “P-perhaps it’s just too strong for a dog’s nose, that’s all!”

This time Shen Jiu moved quickly, snatching up the dog by its middle before it could get its ridiculously tiny muzzle around anything, and he stared directly into the animal’s eyes.

“Do that again, and I’ll put you back out in the cold where I found you. Understood?”

The dog stared back at him, placid and indifferent… until its tongue darted out and licked the end of his nose.

“...good enough.”

It was a few days before the two of them crossed paths again.

It’d seem they both had decided to keep their newfound pets and they were both out that day to take the dogs for walks.

The air in the park was warm, so they sat themselves on a bench to enjoy it for a bit longer and soak up some of the sunlight that was so rare that time of year. Shen Jiu’s pup sat like a sentry at his feet while Shen Yuan’s pup curled up on his lap the moment he sat down.

It was through the ensuing conversation they realized they both gave their dog the same name by sheer coincidence.

One was too lazy and the other was too stubborn, so neither changed it. At least they’d bought different-colored collars. But this brought to light a new revelation, and Shen Yuan just had to ask…

“How did you come up with it?”

“It was just the first thing to come to mind,” Shen Jiu had explained, “from something I’ve been reading, probably.”

"Wait, you read that too!?"

As he suspected! That name was from one of the top-rated web novels that year, from its stallion protagonist: Luo Binghe!

Shen Yuan couldn’t imagine someone as outwardly prim as Shen Jiu reading trashy webnovels, but it turned out to be true. It was just a quick, easy way for him to kill a few minutes of downtime at work, Shen Jiu reasoned in his defense.

Whenever they met up from that point forward, Shen Yuan talked his ear off about his various grievances with Proud Immortal Demon Way.

‘Villains that dig their own graves but don’t bother finishing! Women that lead the protagonist on a three-chapter long subplot just to get to their lewd scenes, only to never see them again! And every single character lost all of their intelligence when the protagonist came around!’

And yet he had nothing but praise for said protagonist… almost excessive praise.

Shen Jiu is annoyed at first but he starts enjoying the company. Which is good because the dog turns out to be a menace.

Well, both dogs could be counted as menaces, just in different ways.

Bing-mei (as they come to call him) would start whining so pitifully when Shen Yuan shut the door between them, thus he often just gave up and took the dog with him whenever it was feasible.

Bing-ge, on the other hand, broke his toys within days, climbed around on furniture he wasn’t allowed on--sometimes when Shen Jiu was looking right at him, too--he barked, he scratched furniture, he tore up pillows.

Despite all the trouble he was causing for his master, Shen Jiu would no longer entertain the idea of giving him up. Not after Bing-ge tore up three separate muggers on three separate occasions and growled at the person who kept taking his parking space until it never happened again.

But the biggest takeaway from their conversations, for Shen Jiu, wasn’t webnovels or dogs. It made him start to realize how lonely he'd been.

The only other person he really spoke to was halfway around the world for their work and they only spoke a couple of times a month. Now that Shen Yuan was around, Shen Jiu actually started to have things to look forward to besides the monotony of work--knocks on the door, long walks with the dogs, the occasional cup of tea afterward on colder days...

Shen Jiu was never the sort to be up-front with his feelings, so he found a way to show his gratitude by helping Shen Yuan with his confidence issues. He started encouraging him to go out more, and to put a little more effort into his looks when he did. This morphed into helping clean up his squalid apartment since Shen Jiu could barely stand to look at it when he came over.

Months later, Shen Jiu’s recommendation had helped Shen Yuan to land an entry-level job. That, and a steady habit of going out once a week, gave them something else to do and talk about.

Progress was slow, but visible. Shen Yuan seemed a little less awkward in public with each passing week.

One night they were leaning on Shen Yuan’s balcony. It was a night of celebration, for he’d just earned his very first promotion, and Shen Jiu had brought over wine for the occasion.

He found himself leaning closer to Shen Jiu, telling himself it was just to get a better look at him in the dim light of the city night. His focus wasn’t the best even when he was sober after all. Yet Shen Yuan didn’t stop. And when Shen Jiu turned to look at him in confusion, and their lips met, he didn’t withdraw for several seconds.

Neither did Shen Jiu.

Shen Yuan tried to flee as soon as he realized what he’d done only for Shen Jiu to pull him back saying:

"Don't run, take responsibility. We talked about this."

Update.

I’ve been wanting to write this message for a long time now, and given my long absence, I oughta fill people in on what’s happened, and what’s going to happen.

It has been a very, very long time since I’ve been in character on Tumblr. Last year I planned to be active as I was getting way more free time while finishing university, but I never expected having too much free time would be as equally draining.

I was basically in a rut for months on end, being completely unmotivated for the longest time. Even with the desire to add new muses (taking on the form of Rin Shima and a few teases in my muses page) to try and get the spark back, it was hard to break out out of that really dark place. Discord became my secondary home for keeping my writing sharp, but even then it gets walled from time to time. It was a hard time for my mental last year.

It was only recently that I’ve taken steps to be able to be more productive; something that sort of became my resolution when the year turned. (Fuck 2020, seriously, it forced me to cross out so much of my long-term calendar lol)

And speaking of which, the steps to be more productive resulted in me getting hired full-time for the first time! I actually start tomorrow, and my schedule’s set to be a 9-6 routine job. Not that I’m complaining, though; the job I scored manages to combine my hobbies of gaming and writing into a dream job that I didn’t think was possible to get.

Unfortunately, that means I’ll have even less time for the foreseeable future to be active here on Tumblr. With that being said, consider roleplaying this blog set on an indefinite hiatus. I’d say retirement, but you know, never say never.

Though, that isn’t to say I’m gonna forsake this blog entirely. I’ve been roleplaying here for about eight years now, and I’ve the fondest memories in this site, made friends here that have become such a big part of my life, and owe everything here for opening the door to this very job and career I’ll be starting in.

So what I’ll be doing is that once in a while I’ll reblog RP prompt memes for all roleplay blogs that follow me still. I never really practiced reblog karma at all, and I’m still fine letting others reblog from me--because it’s fun seeing who’s interested in what scenarios. That’s the fun in roleplaying, I feel like.

Director's Commentary on Jump Into The Fire?

omg hey, anon!! Sorry for the delay in this. It's been, like, a full calendar year since I've posted (not really, it's probably been only a month or so—in the process of moving and transitioning jobs (!!!) so I've been swamped as heckkkkkk)

Like many in the Stranger Things and Harringrove fandom, I thought that Billy's character was criminally underdeveloped and underutilized in canon. So, Jump in the Fire started as a rewrite of Season 2 from (mostly) Billy's perspective.

I had a few goals in this: rewrite Billy's relationship with Max, get Billy integrated into the main group, and explore Billy's home life and the Hargrove-Mayfield family dynamic. Oh, and of course, develop Billy's relationship with Steve!

Billy and Max's relationship was probably the most important to me. In Stranger Things, we see other sibling relationships, namely Jonathan and Will and Nancy and Mike. To me, Billy and Max's relationship had so much untapped potential: you have two teenagers who a) just moved across the country to a new town and b) are living in a household that is affected by domestic violence.

There's also the interesting detail that Billy and Max are siblings by marriage, rather than by blood.

In Jump In The Fire, I wanted to write their relationship as being a lot better and more supportive than it was in canon. In my fic, both Billy and Max think of and refer to each other as siblings (rather than step-siblings) and have a close relationship with each other. Which makes sense (at least to me) because of their family dynamic: Dad is abusive and borderline-alcoholic, they can't tell Mom about how far the abuse goes because they're both afraid of the fall-out, and they can't tell anyone else about the abuse because of a combination of fear and shame about the whole thing.

So what choice do they really have other than leaning on each other and having each other's backs?

Of course...Billy and Max are still siblings in their teenage years. Naturally, they're going to bicker and needle at each other and get on each other's nerves for the sport of it.

Further into their home life, I wanted to write a more nuanced take of their family dynamic. I especially wanted to explore Billy's relationships with Neil and Susan. Neil, especially.

In many cases, abusers, whether they are a parent or a partner, do not actively abuse their victim every moment of every day. There are days, sometimes weeks or even months, without incidents. There are even times when the abuser acts in a way that is caring, loving, friendly, etc.

It makes it so much harder for the victim to get out of the situation, seek help, or even recognize the pattern as abusive.

In Jump In The Fire, I wanted to write Neil and Neil's pattern of abuse as realistically as possible. I didn't want to write him as a man who beats the shit out of his son at every possible turn—rather, as the kind of man who uses the unspoken threat of violence (beyond a slap in the face or a shove against a wall) to control him, if that makes sense. I wrote more about this here!

And I wrote about Billy and Susan's relationship here!

Back to the main...

Jump In The Fire features Billy's friendships with Nancy and Jonathan. I thought it would be interesting to have Nancy be Billy's first actual friend in Hawkins! I also made the choice to have Nancy be the first person that Billy officially came out to.

Billy's friendship with Jonathan wasn't as developed as his friendship with Nancy in Jump In The Fire, so I'll absolutely be exploring that in another fic in the Shout At The Devil series. I have an idea of the two bonding over shitty, abusive dads haha (it's actually not funny lmao)

Which leads us to the romantic relationship between Billy and Steve! I really wanted this to be a friends-to-lovers thing—I absolutely didn't want them to have any fights like they did in canon!

I really enjoyed writing the early developments of this relationship. Billy and Steve are badass monster-fighters...but they're also teenagers. All of these characters are teenagers. So, there's going to be some awkwardness and some silliness and some playful immaturity!

Going deeper, I wanted to write some darker details into Billy's backstory. In Jump In The Fire, before the action starts, Billy was groomed by and was in a "relationship" with a predatory 26-year-old man between the ages of 14 and 15. And when he was 15 years old, he was drugged and r*ped at a party.

These things obviously have an effect on Billy. He's traumatized from these experiences, he's traumatized by being abused by his father, and he's traumatized by his mother abandoning him.

The trauma affects his relationship with Steve. And it affects his relationship with himself and his own body,

Jump In The Fire goes into some of it...but not all of it....

So, midway through writing Jump In The Fire, I decided to make it a series! Jump In The Fire is basically the intro to Shout At The Devil. Right now, the series (still in progress) is comprised of one-shots and a multi-chapter story called Talk To A Green Tree, which focuses on Susan and Billy's relationship. There may or may not also be a future multi-chapter fic about Billy and Neil's relationship which also goes into Neil's own family drama (hinted a bit at in Jump In The Fire)...

Riverdale Holiday Bingo 2020

Shoutout to the amazingly talented and lovely @bettycooper for creating the beautiful banner and mobile header!

Riverdale Holiday Bingo is back for a 2020 Round. This is an all-character, all-ship creation challenge.

This round is going to run a little differently than the usual bingo. Since it is a mini-version you will receive a 3x3 bingo card with 9 holiday-themed prompts which you will choose from the list below. The challenge is to write or create a piece that fills the prompt on each square.

This challenge will run from November 23, 2020 - January 8, 2021 Sign-Ups are open at any time and you can begin posting once you get your card up until the deadline.

ahhh yes, the fic i promised my friend (checks calendar) a year and a half ago??? at least that long ago. still haven’t finished it cuz i’m, ya know, the best. we had done an escape room for her birthday and, since Capri is the only fandom we share, she requested a Lamen escape room fic as a present XD

“Auguste’s Laurent? Your boyfriend’s baby brother, Laurent? This is that Laurent?”

“Yes, Damen, that one. How many Laurents do you think I know?”

“Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting that.” Damen gestured toward the screen where the camera had a perfect view of the man in question, broad-shouldered and tall, staring down his aristocratic nose at a display of fake paintings with single-minded intensity. “The way you’ve talked about him before, I was under the impression he was a bitchy fifteen year old kid.”

“He’s twenty-one,” Nik told him, then muttered, “Still bitchy, though.”

Damen shook his head. He knocked Nik’s feet off the desk, ignoring his disgruntled protest, and resettled himself in his seat to pay attention like the good game master he was supposed to be. Over the speakers, he could hear Laurent muttering to himself, talking through the riddles and puzzles out loud. He’d already gotten through the first two combination locks while they’d been gossiping.

“Can’t believe he’s doing this alone. When was the last time we had a loner in here?”

Nik made a satisfied noise. “Auguste. He was the last person to make it through all of these rooms alone, which Laurent just found out yesterday. Why else would he be in there now?”

“You think he can beat Auguste’s time?”

“I think he’s going to try.”

Laurent was certainly trying. And he was doing very well, for a solo participant. Normally, it took the collaboration of three or four people to put all the pieces together fast enough to beat the clock, and that was with a hint or two (or five) from Damen. But even with no one to bounce ideas off of, Laurent was making good time. He was clearly a brilliant thinker.

Maybe a bit too much so, actually. Damen hesitated just a second or two before pressing the button on the intercom.

“You may want to check that again,” he said. “Try not to overcomplicate—”

Laurent whipped around fast enough to send his long hair flying, glaring in a general upward direction, and hissed, “Did I ask for a hint?”

Damen released the button at once, thoroughly chastised. Nik sniggered at him, and this time Damen did kick him in the shin.
