“Do you ever think that, like…” Eddie pauses, sniffs. Sounds like he’s crying. “That maybe we’re just destined to make each other profoundly unhappy?”

“What?” Steve asks, eyes widening in alarm, because what? Where is this— “Where is this coming from?”

They’re sitting on a picnic bench on the edge of a park, sharing a smoke in the afternoon sun, and Eddie gestures with the hand holding the cigarette to the playground across the way, a look on his face like he just swallowed crushed glass. “The- the kids, Steve,” he rasps, and his lip wobbles like jello.

Steve slides closer to him, tries not to panic as he puts a hand on Eddie’s shaking knee.

His left hand, the one he sometimes wears a makeshift zip-tie ring on.

They can’t get married, but they like to pretend.

Six perfect years of pretending — Steve was thinking just this morning how he’d never felt more connected to another human soul. He squeezes Eddie’s knee. “Why’re you saying this to me, huh?”

Eddie dips his head and wipes his cheek with his wrist. “Nevermind,” he mumbles into his curtain of hair. “It’s— it’s nothing. I’m being stupid.”

“Baby.”

Eddie’s head snaps up then, like it always does when Steve says it like that.

His eyes are swimming with unshed tears.

The panic lashes out again — scales the walls of Steve’s throat like a wild, wounded animal, scratches acid and bile into the delicate skin.

Steve chews his cheek, tastes metal in his mouth.

“Are you…?” He swallows.

Swallows blood and bile and the cold fury that sweeps through him like a feverish chill because— because he’s not. Eddie’s not breaking up with him on a public park bench, in broad fucking daylight for all the school moms to see.

“You’re not doing this to me,” he seethes. “Not here. Not like this.”

Eddie folds forward, cries into his knees, his back trembling with the force of it. “No. Not like this.”

Ok my real /srs thought s on doctor who. It’s fine that rtd has a number one Candy baby and it’s fine that it’s David tennant. David tennant is dozens of doctor who fans number one Candy baby and rtd is one of them. But I had a very man what the fuck I was supposed to watch the quarterback die today reaction. And thought it was silly to pull back from bittersweet into full on #noconflict by saying actually donna CAN remember the doctor without dying and actually they CAN reunite without his imminent death looming over them and they CAN just hang out forever and have fun and they CAN just have a spare tardis sitting around. I was sitting there going oh surely now they kill him because this is how emotional. Payoff works. Oh. I do completely understand people waiting to read a fic until it’s further along or even finished but sometimes I wish that impulse came with an understanding that the writer still hopes that the reader will comment on chapters along the way 🥺
