i finally finished all the liquors and im currently catching up on our dating sim, and i gotta say... the difference in quality is insane. the acting, chemistry, writing, development, pacing, etc, all in two series with equal runtimes (8 short 15 min episodes). our dating sim is giving everything, down to the little moments and character arcs, and the lead couple is just so! sweet!! all the liquors was pretty much the definition of stilted and forgettable, but this proves it has nothing to do with runtime, and everything to do with how you put a show together

Have you ever wanted to draw something but you fought due to your skill level at the time you decide not to do it
Ohhh man. I’ve got so many projects that I want to make but haven’t because I view my current skill set as lacking— and they’re almost always drawing related, because I’m very insecure about my drawing skills— even moreso than my writing skills. To go on a tangent and paint a picture of how severe this visual art insecurity is, I will list off how many people I have directly permitted to read my major written pieces once I passed my mid-teens:
My older sister, because she was my co-writer for the project and not letting her read my work wasn’t an option
My mother on one occasion
My aunt, who has experience with writing and publishing, and I have only ever sent two pieces to
Look at that number of people. The number of pieces I shared with them, in total, was four out of the hundreds of projects I’ve made over the years. I was so precious about my writing because I’m insecure about it. I’m even more insecure about my art. I couldn’t list off all the drawing projects I hesitate to make because I think it’s impossible with my current skill level, not even in a thousand years, but I’ll give a few examples that are always in the back of my mind lately.
A semi-animated pilot to a fantasy-comedy cartoon parodying The Office, starring a goblin secretary who’s trying to assassinate her employer and take over as the final boss of an RPG-esque dungeon that operates like an office building, while her employer is a lich who misinterprets all her efforts to kill him as her being flirty, leading him to develop a very severe crush on the goblin. The project is titled “Boss Fight”, and I have all the resources I need to make it, but I drag my feet because of my art insecurity… also I would be doing all the voice acting myself, and I don’t find my voice very appealing even when I change it to fit different characters.
A webcomic about a fantasy world populated by bipedal bug people that features a very brief “save the world” plot, then focuses the rest of the storyline on how the characters recover from the events of their backstories and the trauma the experienced while saving the world. It’s titled “The Creeping Chronicles”, and I love the project but am so insecure about being able to do the story justice with my art skills that I’ve tentatively pivoted to making it a book series instead. It’s got 21k+ words across 10-ish chapters because I’m too insecure about my art to draw it fully.
A slice of life comic titled “Welcome to Wayside” that’s basically Gravity Falls meets Stardew Valley where a young girl saves a cryptid’s life and now he’s stuck helping her until he repays the life debt he owes. The story features a vaguely men in black-style evil secret agency called G.L.O.O.M. (Gents for Ludicrous Oddity Organization and Management) who have various ranks are named after facets of fashion (khakis are their grunt labor and pocket squares are researchers) and they use a threat-ranking system based on dress codes (i.e. “WE HAVE A BLACK TIE DOWN ON SOUTH STREET, REPEAT: BLACK TIE DOWN ON SOUTH STREET”), and I adored G.L.O.O.M. along with the cast of characters featured in the story, but I don’t feel confident in my ability to design interesting-looking original cryptids.
I could leave this post at that, but I’ve got an important thing to say on this subject—
If you want to make something but are hesitating to because your skill levels are lackluster, make it anyways.
Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever can. Let yourself make the thing, and let yourself make the thing badly. Love it and how ugly it is. The perspective is all askew in this part, and that character is horribly off model there, and isn’t it all amazing? You made that! You made a thing! And you wouldn’t have this thing that you made if you waited until the conditions were perfect to make it and refused to create the thing before your skills were sufficient.
There’s this terrible thing about creative projects— one that is very noticeable in drawing projects especially, in my experience. As your artistic skills develop, your artistic vision also develops to become more and more detailed and masterful… and it’s always going to be outside of your grasp. If you wait until you’re ready to make the thing, you will never make the thing, because you’ll never feel ready no matter how much you build your skills. But if you make the thing before you feel totally prepared, you’ll learn and grow artistically as well as personally, and will be able to feel more confident in future thing-making efforts.

Have read all the ACOTAR books? Who is your favorite character and least favorite character? Would love to know what do you think overall of that book considering it's so huge in the book community.
I have! I read them one after the other back in 2021-2022 and I definitely came away with many thoughts about the series and the implications it had for the book community.
My favourite character among the cast is Nesta. Although she is certainly influenced by Maas’s incongruous and shoddy writing style, I find that she presents a compelling point of contention for the rest of the characters. To me, Nesta seems to be one of the only characters in the series who is able to point out and articulate the madness of what is happening within the Inner Circle’s dynamics. She’s tenacious and unafraid of voicing her opposition even when doing so leads to ostracism and mistreatment from those around her. She’s far from perfect, but at least the text acknowledges her flaws and had her grow from her mistakes instead of sweeping them under the rug. I’ll always feel inclined to defend her because I don’t like the way she’s bullied by the narrative and on some level, I think her nasty qualities make her more interesting.
My least favourite character is Rhysand on the basis that his existence in the narrative makes reading ACOTAR a frustrating experience. It’s clear to me that Maas harbours some immense authorial favouritism towards Rhysand and it SHOWS. This means that Rhysand must always be morally justified, the most powerful, the most righteous, the most beautiful, and so on. The story can’t just sit with his actions, it feels the need to profusely explain them away so his image never has to change or develop into something else. Rhysand has a reputation of being morally gray, but it’s abundantly clear that Maas is averse to taking any risks that would actually cement him as a character with that level of complexity. As such, if you’re able to recognize his faults and contradictions, reading ACOTAR is akin to swimming upstream in a raging current. You have to fight the narrative in a way that is both unrewarding and needlessly frustrating.
As for my opinions on the series, I’ve always thought it had potential, but that it was also undeniably bad. It’s popularity in the Bookish community is expected because it’s very easy to read and get absorbed into the world. The very “teenage” dialogue and character dynamics could appeal to a wide variety of people and a number of people have stated that the series pulled them out of a reading slump. That being said, the series is bogged down by a long list of Maas’s flaws that make me resent ACOTAR’s popularity. Not to mention that some fans will hound you if you point out the flaws in the writing.
Here’s some of the things that stick out to me: Gender essentialism is rife in her stories and it’s very “males will be males” coupled with a rigidly heterosexual model for all relationships in her stories. Also, Maas’s use of feminist rhetoric butchers the values of that ideology and uses it as a flimsy tool for her male characters self-actualization and pseudo-redemption. Furthermore, the books are way longer than they have any right to be and would benefit from being cut down by 100-200 pages. Her plot lines are full of contradictions and are not harmonious, she retcons so many things that people convince themselves that many characters are “unreliable narrators” even when that term doesn’t apply in the slightest. *sigh* it’s just bad writing.
All in all, I get really annoyed whenever problems with ACOTAR are dismissed with “it’s not that deep” or “just don’t read it!” Because I think that engaging critically with these stories is important and that they should be subject to review.

ask game!! Dooku for 2 & 3! ❤️
Yay, Dooku my second favorite blorbo. Thanks, Jess.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
Okay, okay. Since I wholeheartedly threw the canon out the window a long time ago, I had to read up on what it even says about Dooku. What I love is that, by Star Wars standards, he's a very complex character. In the cursed book, we get to know him as an orderly and studious youth who takes his training and teachers very seriously. An absolute poster boy. (And here we fanfiction writers are already given food for speculation: Is he just so dedicated in order to prove that he's worthy of belonging to his Jedi family? After all, for Dooku, family means: if you are not as expected, you will be cast out) But the model boy is only one side, as he befriends the absolute most chaotic, adventurous youngster in the entire temple, Sifo-Dyas. Their friendship (okay, and the dragon) is the best thing the canon has given us about Dooku. In Sifos presence, we experience Dooku's wild, not-so-compliant side: nightly break-ins into the forbidden archives, forbidden contact with his sister, crazy, unsanctioned missions as a padawan. All this (and much more) makes him one of the most exciting characters in the entire canon.
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character? His development. Here you have such an interesting personality and then so much potential is wasted: his slow fall into darkness is far too shallow. In the canon pieces, it's obvious from the beginning that he's destined to become a villain. There is far too little elaboration on how complex the circumstances are that ultimately lead to an idealistic Jedi, full of good intentions, becoming a Sith. The missions that disillusion him, frustrate him, his increasing isolation (intentional or unintentional) from the other Jedi, his increasing involvement with the dark side… All of this is somehow not developed enough. (Also very implausible is the incredible naivety with which he meets Sidious. Someone who knows so much about the history of the Sith should be expected to have a little more common sense) The icing on the cake, of course, is Sifo-Dya's murder. We of the mines have found a fitting interpretation (being dead is a more merciful fate than being held captive by Sidious to squeeze visions out of him) But these things are not illuminated at all in canon.

Why Addiction Is Not a Disease
A Book Review of “The Biology of Desire” by Marc Lewis
By: Tiago V.F.
I heard good things from Marc Lewis, and I was curious to read his work on addiction. I was mostly interested in his book Memoirs of an Addicted Brain, but it wasn’t available on Audible, so I went with one which is his latest.
I was afraid that I was going to be a bit disappointed. I wasn’t particularly interested in arguing against addiction as a disease, as I was already convinced of it, and I didn’t want a very in-depth look at the neuroscience of addiction.
Luckily, despite both topics being fundamental in the book, I still greatly enjoyed it and it was a very balanced perspective. The typical argument for addiction as a disease is that the brains of addicts change with their drug use, as the systems that deal with rewards and motivation are reshaped by it. Lewis’ arguments against this were well presented, and it’s the constant theme throughout the book.
There are two studies that are helpful to cast doubt on the traditional model of addiction. One is that 75% of heroin-addicted veterans from the Vietnam War managed to remain sober once returning one. The other is the “rat” parks, where rats have to choose between morphine and water. Isolated rats choose the morphine until they die. This was used to argue for a classical model of addiction. As if the drug itself creates a biological need that overtakes behavior. However, later studies where rats had other rats to interact with, they chose water, even if they were previously addicted to morphine.
I was already familiar with both studies, and I was happy that they were mentioned but weren’t in the core of his argument. In fact, they are mentioned very briefly. The core of his thesis is that the supposed brain changes that underlie addiction are, in fact, normal to the circumstances they are in. There is no valid reason to call that a disease.
There was a fair bit of neuroscience, but it never felt too overwhelming. The main premise is that addiction is a habit. A very deep, very entrenched habit, but a habit. It is a normal process that is created in the brain through repeated action and experience. These habits, in turn, modify synaptic networks, and new brain patterns reflect the experience they were created by.
While addiction falls under this habit-creation process, part of what makes it more problematic is that intense and recurring desires increase the speed at which this happens, strengthening the feedback cycle. But the neuroplasticity that underlies the whole process is no different than the regular learning and desire you experience every day. The latter which countless examples are given, such as falling in love or enjoying sports.
What I liked the most about the topic is that it deals with addiction in a deeply personal manner. There is a fair bit of science that explains much of what I covered above, but it is often described within the context of a specific life experience to explain the mechanism of addiction. The book describes five true stories of people who became addicted and managed to quit and lead productive lives. These stories were incredible to read and, for me would have been worth a book in themselves. But Lewis uses these stories as examples of what goes on when people get addicted.
I really appreciated the compassionate perspective around addiction. The disease model is, in large part, so appealing because it seems to be humane towards those who suffer from it. It seems a response to people who think they just have a weak will. This dichotomy is destroyed several times by Lewis, and he makes abundantly clear that just because the brain processes are natural does not mean it is useful to talk about behavior being easily stopped through sheer will. This is clear not only from the stories that are featured in the book but also from the author’s own experience as an addict.
It was a fantastic book, and despite being familiar with the overall case that is presented, I still learned a lot. Both in terms of the neuroscience of addiction, but perhaps most importantly, how this plays out in the real-world, described by real people who went through hell and managed to come out of it.

A Twisted Tale Anathology Review
Tumblr media
This anathology of sixteen short stories take new twists on tales already done in the series and new ones from the Pixar and Disney animal catalogue. In the limited space, the authors manage to pack in heartfelt and fun adventures that may make you see the story in a new way.
It's always hard to do an anathology review so I'll do my best to summarize each story and what I enjoyed from it.
Cast Out: What if Snow White learned magic? Blackthorne's Twisted Tale debut has Snow White incidentally taking charge of her fate. During her cleaning of the castle, she finds the magic mirror and her stepmother's evil magic lair. Once she realizes the danger (and the potential excitment to her dreary scullary maid life), she starts reading her spellbooks and is able to change her fate. I enjoyed this twist in how Blackthorne ably retains Snow White's sweet personality and love for animals with a stronger intention in her actions as she takes up spells to protect herself and her animal friends.
A First Mission: What if Mulan became the Emperor's advisor? After returning home, Mulan decides to accept the Emperor's offer to become his advisor so she can serve her country and become a role model to the women of China. Let's face it, after defeating the Huns going back to chores or marriage question wasn't her style. Unfortunately, the other advisors aren't thrilled a woman is among them especially Chi Fu. He schemes to get her kicked out by pointing out her lack of experience. Mulan knows what he is trying to do but she also knows he's right that she doesn't having the training or education so she accepts his challenge to save China's imperial silkworms. This was like a classic Disney short film with Mulan saving the day and making Chi Fu see her in a new light. Just very light and filled with warm-hearted characterization that epitomizes the kind of woman Mulan is. She may not be traditional, but her compassion and ability to see what's really important make her shine. Also I enjoyed Lim's MulanxShang dynamic.
Et Voila: What if Remy had met Colette first? Braswell did a great job on this Pixar classic! Colette's struggles as the only woman in a male-dominated chef industry was steller as she balances Colette's exhaustion of the daily grind, how dishartened she is that she has no more passion for her work yet her technical expertise can't make up for the fact she doesn't have the creativity of master chef. That is until she meets Remy. He has the vision, she has the human hands for knives and together, they make their own pop-up resturaunt in an alleyway. I loved the humorous realism of Colette doubting her sanity as she bonds with the rat and the quiet friendship that springs up between them. Remy finds someone who understands him and Colette loves cooking again. One of my favorites in the anathology.
The Envelope: What if Anastasia had a change of heart? Calonita finally gets to do a story with her favorite Disney tale, and I think it's clear she's a Cinderella fan as this slightly copies Cinderella 2 and 3 by depicting Anastasia's redemption. Yes, Anastasia realizes she did Cinderella wrong, yes, she's treated harshly by her mother and Drizella for her idealism, yes, she gets a cute love interest. But unlike other tales, her redemption is primarily her own and inspired by her late father's belongings that make her realize she has gone far from who he would have wanted her to be. It's a nice tale, but skippable if you're already familiar with other Cinderella movies.
A New Dawn: What if Mufasa gave up his throne? Rochon saves all of us from childhood trauma by having Mufasa live through his fall off the cliff. Permenantly handicapped, he is forced to step down from leadership and Simba becomes king. Rochon creates an interesting conflict as Simba struggles to lead with his father undermining his commands to the pride. He can effectively protect them if Mufasa is sending him one way and the elders don't respect him. The hashing out between father and son is only heightened by Mufasa's choice to blindly ignore Scar's betrayal and believe his lies, plunging them to more danger from internal divisions. Rochon does an excellent job in showing a layered father-son bond as Simba shows that he's ready to lead on his own and Mufasa acknowledge his own resentments while strengthening there is much for them to still learn from each other. Plus the lion fight scenes were truly raw and primal.
Rattle the Stars: What if Jim Hawkins joined the pirates? It's everyone's favorite cult classic! I was so excited for this and England didn't disappoint as they have Jim overhear Silver's betrayal and decide to join the pirate side. She does a good job illustrating Jim's insecurity and hurt over Silver's words and his constant questioning of his sincerity afterwards. Even though he doubts Silver's genuineness, his 'rattle the stars" speech still inspires Jim to take up the pirate mutiny so he'll be able to get the treasure to his mother faster. England makes it clear that this decision will leave Jim with moral ambiguity for the rest of his journey, disappointing Captain Amelia and Dobbler and following in the footsteps of his dead-beat father. But it also feels right for him at this moment, and perhaps he'll be able to finally feel free without the baggage of other's disappoints. It made me want to see more of the story and how Jim the pirate would go, if he'd find his way back home or if he'll further cross all his moral lines.
A Royal Game of Chess: What if history wasn't quite right about the legend of Robin Hood? Braswell takes on the classic trope of what if Robin Hood was a girl. In this case, what if Robin Hood was actually Maid Marian and Red was just her carefree boyfriend and image so King John wouldn't know of the infiltraitor under his roof? Braswell clearly has a lot of fun highlighting the characters' animal characteristics and descriptors and does a nice job of showing Marian's frustration that she is better serving the people inside King John's castle rather than spending it full time in Robin Hood gear as she desires. Even if it means letting Red take all the credit. It was fine, a bit bland as I've seen the trope before though.
The Secret Exchange: What if Eric met Ariel after she rescued him? Here, we get full view of Ariel and Eric's relationship where both can speak their minds and share each other's worlds. Every day, Eric rows out and explains the things about the human world that Ariel always longed to know and Ariel tells him all about under the sea. It's adorable and I love how Lim shows how alike they are in their curisoity and love of adventure and bashfulness of their true feelings. Still, there's plenty of action as Ursula conspires to use their attraction to each other to sow discord in the sea and steal Triton's crown. I really enjoyed this take on the story that has Ariel and Eric teaming up to work together against Ursula and expands the idea of Ariel and Eric being the bridge between sky and sea.
Dust to Dust: What if Tinkerbell was working for Captain Hook? Tinkerbell goes the way of Vidia when she irresponsibly uses her dust to finish her work and gets kicked out of Pixie Hollow. Her magic is tainted and she's soon lured by Hook's worldview that the other fairies are too snooty and judgy, that he gets her and that he needs her help to save Neverland from the dastardly Peter Pan. Ostow perfectly depicts Hook's pompous ego and Tinkerbell's mercurial feelings as they team up to take down Pan by Tinerkbell falls for him instead until that Wendy creature comes along. This time she's not completely motivated by jealousy but also by a fear of abandonment yet the rescue is a wonderful scene of imagination and magical awesomenesss. I just wished there had been more Hook and Tink interactions that was promised from the title.
Gonna Take You There: What if Naveen had to get home to Maldonia? It's road trip time! Tiana quits her job in a huff but before she can go beg for it back, she sees Naveen helpless on the dock after his valet quit on him. She can't leave a man in need and the fact that he's willing to pay her anything to help him get to the docks seals the deal. With Lottie in tow, they had to Alabama and Rochon illustrates the sweetest road trip fluttering crush feelings in a matter of hours. Maybe it's unrealistic but I found it sweet how Tiana talked Naveen into realizing what his future profession could be so he wouldn't have to be a professional moocher and Naveen was able to make Tiana able to appreciate the present and enjoy life. It shows even without the magical circumstances and forced frog bonding, Naveen and Tiana have a chance after all, they just fit.
Fates, Three: What if the triplets visited the witch? The triplets of Dun Broch are fifteen years old and still incorrigable rascals. Well, Hamish is. His other brothers have been preoccupied with their own interest and loves and he's beginning to feel left behind. When he ropes them into another prank that goes disasterously wrong, they secretly sneak out to the witch to change their fates even though Merida would have their hides if they found out. Calonita always has the right touch when depicting familial relationships and it's no different here as she has the brothers reaffirm their bond and communicate their insecurities all while annoying the heck out of the witch.
A Dragon in the Snow: What if Madam Mim and Merlin went to school together? Who doesn't love a good school AU and Perez delivers a bittersweet tale of romance and insecurity. Mim has always been an outcast, her lavender hair a bright sign that she's infected with shadow magic. She's been building herself up to become a royal mage, so to prove to everyone she is good and no one can dismiss her again. In fact, Merlin is one of the few who always treats her with respect and soon their friendship turns to a romance. But when the trial comes down to the two of them, Mim loses and lashes out at Merlin for all his privileges and his romance which broke her concentration. Perez kept Mim's bitterness ever present so even though it's sad when Mim realizes it doesn't matter how hard she works, political connections and lineage rule the day, it also feels inevitable that she'd turn evil. A tragic tale that adds extra depth to the movie if you choose to believe they did have a romance.
The Journey Home: What if Belle had to take her father's place at the fair? Once again, Rochon takes a realistic approch to this Disney tale by bypassing the original story entirely. Belle never goes to the castle or meets the Beast or anything. Instead she ventures to the snow, excited to finally get an adventure only to get stuck in a snowstorm. The only person who could help her transport her father's invention-Gaston. Rochon hilariously writes Belle's disgust with Gaston and her painful choice to ask for his help. Her Gaston is perfectly, smugly in character too, I could hear his voice. But Belle ultimately rescues herself using her own ineguinty, showing that Belle is amazing all by herself with an epilogue that gives her the happy ending she never knew she wanted.
Call it a Hunch: What if Hercules' first day as a god didn't go as planned? Calonita did such a great job in Go the Distance so this story also becomes my immediate fav. Her characterization of Hercules and Meg is amazing from Hercules' sweetness and readiness to start helping others (even though he's unsure how) and Meg trying to start her detective agency. The dialogue is snappy, the dynamic is wonderful, and I enjoyed the inclusion of the gods. It made me smile the whole time. Of course, I'm biased. I just wished there had been more from Hercules' POV but it is inevitable Meg steals the show so I can't really blame Calonita.
The Reluctant Prince: What if Bambi didn't want to be the next Great Prince of the Forest? Braswell's nature imagery instantly brought to mind this soothing film though Bambi's troubles were less so as his father informs him he'll be Prince next season. Bambi is unsure of the responsibilities, he doesn't want to be the aloof leader his father is. He wants to be with his kids that will be born soon, he wants enjoy spring with his friends. The trio of Bambi, Thumper and Flower was nicely done, showing their steadfast friendship, best part of the story. But Bambi's talk with Faline does show human-depth to the character as she makes him see that he's confusing the role of the Great Prince with his resentment of his father and that he doesn't have to follow his footsteps. It was cool that one of the underrated films had one of the most interesting food for thought in giving Bambi more characterization. Although, this may have been based on Bambi 2, it's been awhile but I think the plot/conflict was similar.
The Rose and the Thorns: What if Aurora knew the truth about her curse? Lim closes out the novel by having Aurora take charge of her story too. Knowing about the curse, she has grown up in the castle with her fairy godmothers preparing her with magic and fencing to defend herself against Maleficent's arrival on the chance she doesn't prick her finger. The effect has made her wish for a quiet life in the woods so she doesn't have to deal with the anticipation/overprotectiveness/countdown of the curse controlling everything around her. Luckily, she has Prince Phillip, her best friend and her crush though she's unsure how to convey her feelings with the whole "True love's kiss" thing hanging over them. Lim does good job in keeping them in character and expanding their relationship while presenting a new tale where Aurora and Phillip ambush Maleficent first so they could put the curse to rest once and for all.
This was a fun anathology that any Disney fan would love! I'd recommend reading it all the way through though I'm sure others would skip around to their favorites. Mine were A First Mission, Et Voila, A New Dawn, Rattle the Stars, Gonna Take You There, Fates Three, Call It a Hunch and The Reluctant Prince.

canon compliant future au where the guys are like, in their mid 30's and while skz hasn't officially disbanded they haven't really done anything together in awhile and they all have their own careers and lives happening;
chan, han, and changbin have managed to create their own company under the 3racha label. it's still decently new, especially compared to a lot of the other labels out there, but they made enough of a name for themselves when they were full time idols that they're doing really good for themselves. chan tends to deal with a lot of international scouting, while changbin runs things at their seoul head quarters. han was originally meant to stick in seoul with changbin, but he relocated to tokyo a few years ago to help open and manage a japanese branch of 3racha entertainment.
seungmin stumbled his way into acting, and he ends up becoming a pretty big household name. after producing two solo albums, he decided to try acting for fun, and found a love for it. he still sings of course, and even provides original songs for the ost of each show he's been in. he started out cast in secondary roles, either as the second love interest or the main characters best friend. one memorable occasion he managed to land the role of a villain. it's only recently that he's venturing into lead roles, romantic or otherwise. seungmin really wants to try performing in some sort of musical at least once before the end of his career. he thinks it'd be fun.
lee know lives in japan, running a dance studio of his own. he also is the founder of an organization for re-homing stray cats or any other sort of cat in need. sometimes he'll post snippets of himself singing, on the social media account he still shares with han to this day. but dance was always his first and forever love. lee know posts mostly about the cats he's seen through his day or rare candid moments of han working in a studio.
felix, hyunjin, and jeongin have stuck with the fashion industry. it's something they all love, and possibly always will.
jeongin produced a few solo albums of his own, in various genres, and while he continues to be an ambassador for mcqueen, he's begun branching out into the world of fashion design on his own. he's always had a love for fashion and creating outfits, and now with his experience and resources, he wants to try his hand at creating his own clothing. he remembers the thrill he felt wearing clothing and jewelry that sported well known initials, and one day he hopes to instill that same feeling in someone else with his own YJ emblem.
felix has small projects of his own over the course of his career, and he sticks with louis vuitton the whole time, thankful that they allow him so much freedom in certain things. he doesn't necessarily like to be tied down to one thing, and enjoys speaking out for many organizations that hold his interest. I feel felix would be the type to travel and vlog about it when he could. living a quieter life than some of his friends but still a full and fun life. he'd settle down somewhere in europe, possibly somewhere in italy as he slowly learns the language over the years.
hyunjin has made his way from versace prince to versace king. he's at every one of the events, smiling and posing and overall being the model ambassador. there are many pictures of him arriving arm in arm with donatella herself. he is the face of versace. he absolutely has a house in italy or france, and while it might not be his permanent residence he spends a fair amount of time there. there's just something about the european seaside that keeps drawing him back in. he's excited to collab with jeongin and his up and coming fashion line, happily providing samples of his art. it's said that versace is very supportive of whatever hyunjin has planned.

“Making mistakes, winning or losing a loved one is growth. I have no regrets!" Lili Reinhart always loves what she chooses.
After the sixth season of "Riverdale”, Lili Reinhart jumped onto Netflix with his latest film "Look Both Ways", and also shot the exclusive cover for the September issue of BAZAAR Taiwan at the same time!
Many actors are afraid that the popular evergreen role will be played for a long time, and then there is no way to get rid of its shadow. But Lili Reinhart isn't afraid to be thwarted by her own success. She's both Betty in "Riverdale" and herself. The frivolous and absurd teen dramas in the eyes of others are regarded by her as the most precious training ground, and she plans to refine what she has learned in the past six years into more eye-catching works. The topic of "choice" in the new film "Look Both Ways" seems to be a portrayal of Lili's life along the way: she moved to Los Angeles alone to pursue her dreams, was troubled by tsunami-like anxiety, and stumbled on the road to success. There are always too many in my mind. "If...", but she always loves what she chooses, chooses what she loves. Whether it’s publicizing her mental illness or her sexuality, as a role model for Gen Z, Lili never shys or regrets; if she can’t tell the truth with such an influence on social media, then young women who look up to her can. How to confidently walk the path you want to walk? Lili said that as long as you follow your heart, even if there is a slight bump on the road, you will accept it at the short end, and then go to the next place contentedly. So, what is Lili planning after the broadcast of "Riverdale", which will have its finale next year?
Harper's BAZAAR (HB for short): The sixth season of "Riverdale", which is currently on the air, introduces more fantasy and musical elements. Do you enjoy shooting these novel and even fanciful plots?
Lili Reinhart (LR for short): You have to appreciate the creativity of "Riverdale", very few shows can explore such a variety of story types at the same time! The addition of unpredictable supernatural elements and multiverses this time can make audiences feel interesting and exciting at all times - especially "Riverdale" has a season of 22 episodes. For actors, the unexpected surprises every time we receive a script not only allows us to take risks with the audience, but also gives us a lot of space to try different performances.
HB: What have you grown the most since you started filming Riverdale?
LR: As a performer, "Riverdale" has given me a place where I can practice with peace of mind. When you play the same character for so many years, it's natural to face various plots and try to deal with them in different interpretations. During the six years of filming "Riverdale", I was forced to find change and continue to grow in a stable working environment. Today, I feel confident about the challenges of performing in the future, and it's all thanks to Riverdale.
HB: Speaking of growing up, the movie "Look Both Ways" starring you is finally out! How was your first filming experience as a leading actress in a movie?
LR: Filming Look Both Ways was definitely one of the best experiences of my life! I feel extra confident despite being the lead actress and executive producer this time around; it's not just because I'm well prepared, all the incredibly talented cast and crew are more than willing to take the time to sit down and talk about each The relationship between the characters and the details of the scene arrangement.
HB: "Look Both Ways" takes Natalie's "unexpected pregnancy" as the intersection, and imagines how two completely different paths, whether or not to have children, will affect her life. How do you understand Look Both Ways' interpretation of young women making choices for themselves?
LR: It's beautiful that Natalie can choose whether or not to have a baby. The overturn of "Roe v. Wade" (editor's note: meaning that current American women are not allowed to have abortion rights) certainly makes "Look Both Ways" seem less real, especially for young women like Natalie who live in Texas, and now You cannot decide whether or not to have an abortion. You will be forced to have children, whatever the consequences. When Roe v. Wade was overturned, our director, Wanuri Kahiu, sent me a message that the film had to endorse pro-choice. We firmly believe in this. It's outrageous and disturbing that many women living in a particular state can't make choices about their bodies.
HB: What valuable inspiration do you think Gen Z can take from Look Both Ways?
LR: Many young people are living under enormous pressure under the global epidemic, and they feel sad and confused because they have missed what should be the best years. We have to be careful in social situations, which makes it extra difficult to make friends or maintain good relationships. For the future, we face too many unknowns. I hope that "Look Both Ways" can give the audience hope and believe that there are still many beautiful possibilities in the world. When the road seems rough and difficult, you must believe that the universe is pointing you to the right path, and everything will eventually come to the bridge and straight. I know it's hard not to get caught up in a pessimism - I’m still suffering from depression and severe anxiety myself -- but like Natalie, it's a little more comfortable when we believe that things are going to get better.
HB: Like Natalie, you moved to Los Angeles at 18. Ever wonder what life would be like now if you stayed in Ohio?
LR: Before moving to Los Angeles, my parents and I lived in North Carolina. I moved there when I was 16 because of my father's job. Honestly, I would be very unhappy if I were still living in North Carolina! Since I grew up wanting to live in Los Angeles, my time in North Carolina made my anxiety worse. No matter what job I get, it's hard to keep doing it because I'm always thinking "I don't want to be here", "This is not where I should be". Being able to move to Los Angeles to pursue my dream is something I'm grateful for to this day.
HB: What “what ifs” in your life make you think over and over again?
LR: I often fantasize about where I would be if I hadn't been in Riverdale, if I hadn't moved to Los Angeles, if my parents hadn't supported me as an actor? Every trivial choice in life has shaped who we are today, but I have no regrets. Every time I make a mistake, get rejected, win a victory, or lose a loved one, it makes me grow a little bit—even in the worst of the darkest moments.
HB: You currently have 28.8 million followers on Instagram and have publicly discussed your mental illness. Can you give Gen Z three tips for healthy online community use?
LR: 1. Only follow accounts that inspire you or put you in a good mood.
2. Remember that privacy is a good thing, and some good moments just need to be remembered for yourself.
3. There are many accounts discussing mental health on the Internet. If you are also suffering from mental illness, you may wish to take a look at their practical advice!
HB: What's your next step?
LR: The final season of "Riverdale" will begin filming this fall and wrap up next summer. At the same time, for the past year and a half, I have been in full swing through my own production company, Small Victory Productions. I think the world is a stage where I can do my best. But at this moment I just want to rest and take advantage of this summer to travel around, get together with friends and family, and enjoy the short peace before the storm hits again!

31. The Alloy of Law, by Brandon Sanderson
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 325 My summary: It’s a new age for Mistborn. Hundreds of years have passed since the days of Vin, Kelsier, and Eland. The world has moved on - trains connect different cities, electricity lights the homes of the wealthy, and Allomancy has been refined and reshaped. Outside of the cities, however, are the Roughs, the poor areas where you need some kind of powers to survive. Into this mess strides Wax, a nobleman turned lawman turned nobleman again, scarred by his past experiences and unready for a life among high society. When noblewomen start being kidnapped by a mysterious gang, Wax is ready to investigate. But this case is stranger than he could have imagined... My rating: 4/5 My commentary:
Time for more Mistborn! Yeah, I thought I wouldn't be coming back to this series for a good while yet, but work came through and got a copy to me super-fast. And so, of course, I read it. Mistborn's come into a new age! It's hundreds of years after the events of the previous books, and a new cast of characters is taking on a new set of challenges. I'm just as enamoured with Sanderson's writing as I was in the previous installments. Though I was sort of surprised at the relatively low page count on this one - Mistborn books are usually quite chunky, and this book has to establish a lot of new things in the world. But anyway. More under the cut!
Our main character is Wax, a Twinborn nobleman who spent some time as a lawman in the Roughs, the criminal outlayer of the city. He's got some baggage from his time in the Roughs, specifically that he accidentally shot his partner Lessie. Backing him up are Wayne (I see what you did there), a Roughs thief and conman, and Marasi, a noblewoman with an interest in criminal psychology. One criticism I do have with Wax is that in a lot of ways he feels like Kelsier Two - a charismatic leader and reputed bada-- with a tragic backstory including a dead woman. That's not to say that he wasn't an engaging lead, more that I couldn't help but notice the character model here. Marasi is my favourite of the trio, she brings an interesting perspective as an illegitimate noble with a 'useless' Misting who wants to study and make a name for herself. She's smart and perceptive, but not annoying; she's very humble and aware of her limitations, she's more an awkward dork than anything. Wayne was also very endearing. I loved his perspectives on both hats and accents - hey, a different outfit could make you all but invisible in the time periods this story's drawing from, he's not wrong. They were all entertaining protagonists, and I look forward to seeing more of them.
The worldbuilding is always something I've found interesting in Mistborn, and this book doesn't disappoint. While the world of Mistborn from the first trilogy was a quasi-late-medieval fantasy, this book's firmly in the realm of the 1800s. There's trains! Electricity! Labour disputes! Industrialisation! The identity of skaa has seemingly vanished completely, and though there is a nobility, they're not really seen as a different species any more, just a regular nobility. Being Mistborn is apparently no longer a thing - anyone with Allomancy is a Misting - but people can be Twinborn, Ferruchemists and Allomancers able to combine tapping into and burning metals in interesting ways. There are also a couple of new metals in widespread use! I love all of this, I love that the world has grown and changed. There's a mythology that's grown up around the original Mistborn characters, a religion or two. The church of the Survivor's still going strong, but Marsh-as-Ironeyes seems to be the embodiment of death, and there's a church for him too! So many little details for the astute reader to pick up on. I really like the idea that this world isn't static, that both cultural and technological changes have occurred while the eye of the narrative wasn't on it.
As to the story itself, I don't have a lot to say. It felt like a lot of setup, but that's to be expected for a book that's first in a trilogy. And that's also not to say that the throughline of this book wasn't compelling! Wax's fiancee, who is also Marasi's half-sister, is kidnapped by a group of rogues for Nefarious Purposes, possibly their link to a strong Allomatic line. And if that isn't enough, the mastermind behind the kidnapping is Wax's old colleague and former friend. Wax wants to get her back, which really brings to the fore the dichotomy in his mind between the Roughs lawman and the noble scion. He wants to be both, and is increasingly finding that being a nobleman is harder than being a lawman, but he has to start choosing between his position and his protective instincts. Which is really compelling! I'm interested to see where this is going to go. But not for a while - my tbr pile is ever-growing, so I gotta speedun it!
Next up, a graphic novel version of a classic novel - Big Brother is watching you.

"emh transfeminine swag" anon here. now that you've watched "body and soul" i can go ahead with my explanation.
to start at the beginning, his early arc revolves around getting the rest of the crew to recognize his personhood and finding his identity with the help of kes. (kes also reads as trans to me but that's more of a vibes thing) because he was modeled after a man, he assumes that gender by default and puts himself firmly in that box, not thinking that there's an option to be anything else. becoming "he" instead of "it" is an improvement, but not entirely fulfilling. he searches for a name but limits himself to masculine ones, never finding one that fits, eventually settling on the neutral "doctor".
later on, he creates a holographic simulation of a home life, casting himself as the stereotypical patriarch. he tells his friends that he wants to better understand his patients, but in the process he reinforces his position as a man. the family he creates is perfect, but hollow. every word they say is so positive as to sound forced. they have "the most wonderful husband and father in the quadrant", an admiration that hinges on his masculinity.
then we meet dr. zimmerman, the man who created the emh and who he views as a father. he states plainly that he wants his father to be proud of him. zimmerman has a complicated relationship with the mark 1, after putting so much of himself into it only for the program to be essentially discarded by starfleet. the emh proves his worth (and to an extent, zimmerman's own) to zimmerman and succeeds, but the process was long and difficult. after all that, he doesn't want to make any changes to himself, other than what can be explained as technological improvements, in order not to betray zimmerman's intentions for him and lose the admiration he worked so hard for.
the only time he allows himself femininity is out of necessity, when he must download into seven's implants to hide from hologram-hating aliens. this leads to him possessing her. he spends much of this time giddy, trying to have as many experiences in his new body as possible. in the episode, he also befriends one of the aliens and another becomes romantically interested in him. he leans into these relationships and seems to enjoy the social aspect of being viewed as female. however, as he's experiencing this gender euphoria, he has to contend with the knowledge that if they find out that he's really a hologram, ie "really a man", they will be disgusted by him. not only that, they will actively try to kill him. in the end, he isn't killed, but his new relationships never recover from that discovery.
the fallout from that experience pushes him further back into the closet, as he doesn't experiment with gender again for the rest of the series. the subtext that this reading stems from doesn't give us the happiest ending, but unfortunately i think it's one many trans people can relate to, and it means a lot to me.
🥺🥺 this is so sweet... well, ok, maybe not sweet considering the sort of ending we're talking about but... to be honest anon, I can COMPLETELY see where you're coming from. And how well thought out !! I always sort of saw the doctor as somewhat agender but like I'm really starting to consider the opposite direction. I feel like the timeframe that voyager came out was such a waste in terms of exploring things like this. Imagine if the writers actually noticed this trend and actually discussed it/explored it IN episode !! And actually getting to see the doctor figure themself out!! I mean. tbh idk if they'd even explore it NOW considering all the dudebros that go mental over star trek doing anything "liberal" but. WE can explore it... that's the best we can have considering snfjsjg. I MEAN IN TERMS OF DECODING SUBTEXT I THINK YOU'RE DOING A HELL OF A JOB ! I love this... TYSM FOR REMEMBERING ANON?? AND SHARING?? I LO V E META LIKE THIS ESPECIALLY ABT GENDER/SEXUALITY AND. MY FAVE CHAR IT MAKES ME SUPER HAPPY 🥺🥺 U remembered to come back ,,
I genuinely wish he still had kes around cause I can imagine her helping with stuff like this so much and being so supportive :'( but that's only me
Also does give rlly new meaning to in that ep the sort of bitterness when he says "there's NO women like me..." like...ouch.
ALSO I DEFINITELY ALREADY AGREED W THE SORT OF...STARTING OUT AND JUST ASSUMING THE HYPERMASCULINE ROLE. Because that's like. All he knows. It's all he's seen. And yk...trying to be seen as a person as a hologram is hard enough, maybe he also doesn't wanna "rock the boat" by asking to be seen as a woman too, as sad as that is.

இ 2023 REVIEW இ
Tumblr media
"What were some of your greatest accomplishments this year and out of all of them, which one was the most memorable one for you?"
❛ I've been lucky this year and I got to be part of so many amazing projects and I got to experience so many amazing things that it's hard to pinpoint but if I had to choose I'd say being cast in Bullet Inquiry, being cast in Martine Corporation, and having my own Youtube show. These three things are the most memorable for me and they are things I definitely won't forget. Oh! And also having my own solo song during Spring Boys. Being president of Spring Boys is something I won't forget either. ❜
"What area(s) do you think you’ve personally improved on since the beginning of this year? [please list out the skill(s) and reason(s) why]"
❛ Out of everything, I think I've improved a lot in acting, modeling, and English. Acting because of all the amazing productions I've been lucky enough to be able to be part of. Modeling because of the companies that find me appealing enough to want me to be the face of their products. And English just through studying and working hard on learning the language. ❜
"What are some of your personal goals for 2024?"
❛ My biggest goal is to be cast as a lead in a musical. Being a musical actor is my dream and I'd love to be one of the main or lead cast members. I'd also love to do some more solo work and branch out into new areas. I've enjoyed the different experiences outside of acting so I'd like to explore more of the singing or modeling side. ❜
"Out of all of the actors, what do you think makes you stand out from all of them?"
❛ I think my previous experience as a child actor is something that helps me stand out more. I guess also my outgoing and social personality. I'm loud and very social and I enjoy making new friends and meeting people so it's not hard for me to get excited and enjoy life which I guess makes me stand out a little. ❜
"Aside from your main career path (actor), are there any types of gigs outside of it that you would be interested in doing in the future?"
❛ I'd love to do more singing or performing. I also enjoy being on variety shows so I'd love to try more in that area. Also doing more solo work whether that is acting, modeling, hosting, whatever. The sky's the limit and I'm always ready to experience new things and try new ventures. I'm excited to see what next year brings. ❜

Season 1, Episode 4
In episode 4 of Ginny and Georgia, there are two different scenes happening at once. The episode switches between Ginny’s and Georgia's point of view. For Ginny, this episode focused on her relationship drama with her boyfriend. She is struggling to feel sexy and when she sends a risky photo and gets no response, she is crushed. With the influx of emotions, she lets her guard down to her neighbor which leads to them texting about sending more pictures. In Georgia’s point of view, she is planning a casino night for a school fundraiser to raise more money than the bake sale the previous year ran by Cynthia. It ends up being a great success with Georgia’s sneaky strategies and the episode ends with her making date plans with the mayor, Paul, who also happens to be her boss. The key characters in this episode are Ginny, Georgia, Marcus, Hunter, Max, and Paul. The main actors are Ginny and Georgia, the mother daughter duo that the show is based around. Hunter is Ginny’s boyfriend, Marcus is Ginny’s neighbor, and Max is one of Ginny’s friends who is mentioned most in the episode. Paul is the mayor of Wellsbury and is Georgia's love interest.
Race is a crucial aspect of Ginny’s life. She is mixed which is significant because Ginny is a person of color being raised in an all white household along with living in a predominantly white neighborhood. She struggles to feel wanted and beautiful in this episode which can relate to her racial struggles. It is like growing up and not seeing dolls with darker skin and curly hair. Ginny doesn’t have a racial role model in her life which would be beneficial for her self esteem. This racial divide also has underlying racial political implications, with the town being so white and little diversity within the cast. This racial divide makes Ginny an outlier at such a young and vulnerable age.
Both of the main characters in this show are female so many of the views of gender come from female experience with men. One of the opening lines that Georgia said to Ginny was “men are visual creatures, so give them something to look at” (1:47), which objectifies women within the first minutes of the episode. This gives Ginny, a young teenage girl, that the idea of womanhood is to be loved by a man. This idea of womanhood is what leads Ginny to send pictures of her in a bra to her boyfriend. She did this without warning, just wanting to feel sexy and wanted. When she received no response, her confidence dropped and she became very vulnerable. With her guard down, she starts texting her neighbor, Marcus, the same sexy pictures and others of her touching herself. Ginny is being objectified because she only feels beautiful when she receives a response from a male. This whole interaction shows how young girls crave the feeling of being told they're sexy and beautiful by men, even if it's the wrong ones.
In this episode, there are no non binary or a - gender characters. However, there are lots of male and female interactions. Females speak a little more in the show than males but it is basically equal. The males are present in the storyline to further romantic relationships. The main males, Marcus, Hunter, and Pual, are all romantically involved with one of the main females. They are very stereotypical male side characters that are just for a love interest. Ginny and her friends are also stereotypical teenage girls, watching inappropriate shows and giggling, going to school functions, and talking about their love lives. With being so stereotypical, a viewer who is also a 15 year old girl could look at Ginny sending those shirtless photos and think it's okay to do whereas in reality, sending those types of photos could ruin a person's life. On the other hand, Georgia is not a stereotypical mom. She is a single mom with four previous serious relationships and both of her children from two different males. In Wellsbury, MA where the show takes place, this is a very uncommon parenting situation. Georgia has to be strong for both of her kids and be able to make ends meet.
Sexuality is a big portion of this episode of Ginny and Georgia. For one, Ginny is figuring out her sexual life and her attraction to boys. She sends the sexy photo to two guys and tries touching herself for the first time. Georgia also puts Ginny on birth control because she thinks Ginny and Hunter are having a sexual relationship. These are all aspects of growing up and finding comfortability in your own sexuality. Along with Ginny, her friend Max was also a prominent character for sexuality representation. She is openly gay and has a crush on a girl Sohpia. By the end of the episode, Max and Sohpia are talking together at a school function, showing progression in their relationship. Max’s character is very important for LGBTQ representation in the show as she was the only queer character mentioned in the episode. She is not made fun of for being gay and is fully accepted by her friends. This gives the viewer a queer person to relate to in the show or an idea on how to be a proper ally. Sexuality is a very open subject in this show and can help the viewer explore their own feelings through watching their characters deal with theirs.

10 INTERESTING JAPAN NOVELS
I Am a Cat - by Natsume Sōseki Richly allegorical and delightfully readable, I Am a Cat is the chronicle of an unloved, unwanted, wandering kitten who spends all his time observing human nature - from the dramas of businessmen and schoolteachers to the foibles of priests and potentates. From this unique perfective, author Sōseki Natsume offers a biting commentary - shaped by his training in Chinese philosophy - on the social upheaval of the Meiji era. (SOURCE: Goodreads)
Sayonara - by James A. Michener Sayonara (1954), is a novel published by American author James A. Michener about the Japanese word "sayonara." Set during the early 1950s, Sayonara tells the story of Major Gruver, a soldier stationed in Japan, who falls in love with Hana-Ogi, a Japanese woman. The novel follows their cross-cultural Japanese romance and illuminates the racism of the post-WWII time period. (SOURCE: Goodreads)
Out - by Natsuo Kirino The complex yet riveting narrative seamlessly combines a convincing glimpse into the grimy world of Japan's yakuza with a brilliant portrayal of the psychology of a violent crime and the ensuing game of cat-and-mouse between seasoned detectives and a group of determined but inexperienced criminals. Kirino has mastered a Thelma and Louise kind of graveyard humor that illuminates her stunning evocation of the pressures and prejudices that drive women to extreme deeds and the friendship that bolsters them in the aftermath. The Lake - by Banana Yoshimoto It tells the tale of a young woman who moves to Tokyo after the death of her mother, hoping to get over her grief and start a career as a graphic artist. She finds herself spending too much time staring out her window, though … until she realizes she’s gotten used to seeing a young man across the street staring out his window, too. They eventually embark on a hesitant romance, until she learns that he has been the victim of some form of childhood trauma. Visiting two of his friends who live a monastic life beside a beautiful lake, she begins to piece together a series of clues that lead her to suspect his experience may have had something to do with a bizarre religious cult. . . . After Dark - by Haruki Murakami Nineteen-year-old Mari is waiting out the night in an anonymous Denny’s when she meets a young man who insists he knows her older sister, thus setting her on an odyssey through the sleeping city. In the space of a single night, the lives of a diverse cast of Tokyo residents—models, prostitutes, mobsters, and musicians—collide in a world suspended between fantasy and reality. Utterly enchanting and infused with surrealism, After Dark is a thrilling account of the magical hours separating midnight from dawn. (SOURCE: Goodreads)
Convenience Store Women - by Sayaka Murata Keiko has never fit in, neither in her family, nor in school, but when at the age of eighteen she begins working at the Hiiromachi branch of “Smile Mart,” she finds peace and purpose in her life. In the store, unlike anywhere else, she understands the rules of social interaction―many are laid out line by line in the store’s manual―and she does her best to copy the dress, mannerisms, and speech of her colleagues, playing the part of a “normal” person excellently, more or less. Keiko is very happy, but the people close to her, from her family to her coworkers, increasingly pressure her to find a husband, and to start a proper career, prompting her to take desperate action… (SOURCE: Goodreads)
Norwegian Wood - by Haruki Murakami Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before. Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable. As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman. (SOURCE: Goodreads)
Before the Coffee Gets Cold - by Toshikazu Kawaguchi In Before the Coffee Gets Cold, we meet four visitors, each of whom is hoping to make use of the café’s time-travelling offer, in order to: confront the man who left them, receive a letter from their husband whose memory has been taken by early onset Alzheimer's, to see their sister one last time, and to meet the daughter they never got the chance to know. But the journey into the past does not come without risks: customers must sit in a particular seat, they cannot leave the café, and finally, they must return to the present before the coffee gets cold . . . Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s beautiful, moving story explores the age-old question: what would you change if you could travel back in time? More importantly, who would you want to meet, maybe for one last time? (SOURCE: Goodreads)
The Last Children of Tokyo - by Yōko Tawada Yoshiro thinks he might never die. A hundred years old and counting, he is one of Japan's many 'old-elderly'; men and women who remember a time before the air and the sea were poisoned, before terrible catastrophe prompted Japan to shut itself off from the rest of the world. He may live for decades yet, but he knows his beloved great-grandson - born frail and prone to sickness - might not survive to adulthood. Day after day, it takes all of Yoshiro's sagacity to keep Mumei alive. As hopes for Japan's youngest generation fade, a secretive organisation embarks on an audacious plan to find a cure - might Yoshiro's great-grandson be the key to saving the last children of Tokyo? The Tale of Genji - by Murasaki Shikibu Written in the eleventh century, this exquisite portrait of courtly life in medieval Japan is widely celebrated as the world’s first novel. Genji, the Shining Prince, is the son of an emperor. He is a passionate character whose tempestuous nature, family circumstances, love affairs, alliances, and shifting political fortunes form the core of this magnificent epic. Royall Tyler’s superior translation is detailed, poetic, and superbly true to the Japanese original while allowing the modern reader to appreciate it as a contemporary treasure. Supplemented with detailed notes, glossaries, character lists, and chronologies to help the reader navigate the multigenerational narrative, this comprehensive edition presents this ancient tale in the grand style that it deserves.
