The Cocos Rosy Lipped Batfish is by far the weirdest fish I have seen. 🦇🐟 We are at 110ft deep in the only place in the world that has these fish, and we got lucky and saw 2 of them. This fish is about a foot long, and as you can see just slowly walks on the ocean floor. The beeping noise was my dive computer freaking out because it was too conservative and wanted me above 106ft (113ft is normal max depth for nitrox at 32%). #Repost @dowlefineart ・・・ I had print of this work ‘Pieces of Eight' signed by Montague Dawson (1890-1973) a few years ago. It was one of my favourite works by him which is interesting as it is quite different to the paintings of tall ships on the high seas that he is known for. I was certainly interested to see that the original painting for the print is for sale at Bonhams' Marine Sale next week (11/11/2020). It has a different name to the print being called ‘Smugglers’ Bay’ but is even more impressive to view. Dawson’s paintings of Caribbean subjects are highly sought after and I am sure this work will attract a lot of interest even at the estimate of £180,000 - 250,000. This picture probably depicts the Cocos Islands and shows pirates of the shore with their treasure. It is reminiscent of Robert Louis Stephenson’s book ‘Treasure Island’ with Long John Silver’s parrot, Captain Flint continually repeating ‘Pieces of eight, pieces of eight!’. This is turn was a reference to the Spanish silver dollar which would often be cut into pieces of eight in order to provide change. Me and @yogajlc did something that very few people in the world will ever get the chance to do - go down to 1000 feet (300m) deep at Cocos Islands in a submersible! For reference, recreational diving is limited to 120-130ft (most dives between 30-90ft), so going down 1000 ft is really, really deep. It took about an hour to get to the bottom, and we got to see some weird critters like the Jelly Nose fish, an unidentified type of Moral Eel, Groupers, and a king crab. Even at 800 ft deep, there is a lot more life and light than you would expect. These types of predation events are raw and exciting and I am very fortunate to have seen and experience quite a few over my lifetime. This one off #socorro was one of the mellowest but still very exciting but generally you need to work hard to keep the fish from trying to hide around you because that would be a dangerous situation “don’t be the bait ball.” I’ve been lucky enough to visit the #galapagosislands and #cocosisland and one of the trips I did with #drsylviaearle of @mission_blue we saw perhaps over ten bait balls one after the next with dolphins, tuna, sharks, and birds working together to consume all of the fish. What was really exciting about this encounter was getting to share it with so many people and also the fact that this was the first trip in years where I only saw maybe one floating plastic bag. Even the huge bait balls off of cocos were often started with fish that had been hiding under drifting plastics. The problem comes when the predators try to eat the fish they eat the plastic too. Come help clean up the beach tomorrow and happy a happy #beautiful earthday.
