Understanding gender
Understandings of gender continually evolve. In the course of a person’s life, the interests, activities, clothing and professions that are considered the domain of one gender or another evolve in ways both small and large.
people tend to use the terms “sex” and “gender” interchangeably. But, while connected, the two terms are not equivalent. Generally, we assign a newborn’s sex as either male or female (some US states and other countries offer a third option) based on the baby’s genitals. Once a sex is assigned, we presume the child’s gender. For some people, this is cause for little, if any, concern or further thought because their gender aligns with gender-related ideas and assumptions associated with their sex. Nevertheless, while gender may begin with the assignment of our sex, it doesn’t end there. A person’s gender is the complex interrelationship between three dimensions: body, identity, and social gender.
Gender identity is our internal experience and naming of our gender. It can correspond to or differ from the sex we were assigned at birth.
Understanding of our gender comes to most of us fairly early in life. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, “By age four, most children have a stable sense of their gender identity.” This core aspect of one’s identity comes from within each of us. Gender identity is an inherent aspect of a person’s make-up. Individuals do not choose their gender, nor can they be made to change it. However, the words someone uses to communicate their gender identity may change over time; naming one’s gender can be a complex and evolving matter. Because we are provided with limited language for gender, it may take a person quite some time to discover, or create, the language that best communicates their internal experience. Likewise, as language evolves, a person’s name for their gender may also evolve. This does not mean their gender has changed, but rather that the words for it are shifting
While the dimensions of gender and the desire for congruence are common to us all, ultimately gender is personal. Each dimension of gender is informed by our unique intersection of identities, experiences, and personal characteristics. We are more than our body, gender identity and gender expression: we are also our race, ethnicity, class, faith, sense of geographic place, family history, and more. Our gender is personal because, while we share some of these aspects of self with others, the way that all of these identities, influences and characteristics come together is unique to each of us.
One final distinction to make is the difference between gender and Sexual orientation, which are often incorrectly conflated. In actuality, gender and sexual orientation are two distinct, but related, aspects of self. Gender is personal (how we see ourselves), while sexual orientation is interpersonal (who we are physically, emotionally and/or romantically attracted to).
Why is it so critical to distinguish between these two concepts? When we confuse gender with sexual orientation, we are likely to make assumptions about a young person that have nothing to do with who they are. For example, when someone’s gender expression is inconsistent with others’ expectations, assumptions are frequently made about that person’s sexual orientation. The boy who loves to play princess is assumed to be gay, and the girl who buys clothes in the “boys’” section and favors a short haircut may be assumed to be a lesbian. These could be faulty conclusions. What someone wears and how they act is about gender expression. You cannot tell what a person’s sexual orientation is by what they wear (for that matter, you can’t know what their gender identity is either, unless they tell you).
Our society’s conflation of gender and sexual orientation can also interfere with a young person’s ability to understand and articulate aspects of their own gender. For example, it’s not uncommon for a transgender or non-binary youth to wonder if they are gay or lesbian (or any sexual orientation other than heterosexual) before coming to a fuller realization of their gender identity. How we come to understand our gender and our sexual orientation – and the choices we make to disclose and express these parts of ourselves – are distinct paths. Thinking of these two aspects of self as interchangeable may, instead of helping us know ourselves and one another better, actually get in the way of understanding and communication.
although there are a lot of genders, there's always one for you and I'll bring up a short list of the most commonly used genders with their descriptions
Agender
Not having a gender or identifying with a gender. They may describe themselves as being gender-neutral or genderless.
Bigender
A person who fluctuates between traditionally “male” and “female” gender-based behaviours and identities.
Cisgender
A person whose gender identity and biological sex assigned at birth are the same. For example they were born biologically as a male, and express their gender as male. Often used in the shortened form 'cis'.
Gender Expression
The external display of one’s gender, through a combination of how they dress, how they act and other factors. This is generally within the context of what society expectations of gender are.
Gender Fluid
A person who is gender fluid may always feel like a mix of the two traditional genders but may feel more man some days, and more woman other days.
Genderqueer
A gender identity label often used by people who do not identify with being a man or a woman, or as an umbrella term for many gender non-conforming or non-binary identities.
Gender Variant
Someone who either by nature or by choice does not conform to gender-based 2expectations of society.
Mx.
Is a title (e.g. Mr., Ms., etc.) that is gender neutral. Pronounced miks, (similar to Ms) it is often the option of choice for folks who do not identify as cisgender.
Non-Binary
A gender identity and an umbrella term for people whose identity falls outside of the binary of male and female. Some people don't identify fully, or at all, with the gender they were assigned at birth and some people have no gender at all.
Passing
When someone who is gender variant is regarded to be, or 'passes' as a cisgender man or cisgender woman.
Third Gender
A term for a person who does not identify with either man or woman, but identifies with another gender. This gender category is used by societies that recognise three or more genders, both contemporary and historical, and is also a conceptual term meaning different things to different people who use it.
Transgender
A person who lives as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex assigned at birth. Trans people may describe themselves using a range of different terms.
Transgender man
A term used to describe someone who is assigned female at birth but identifies and lives as a man. This may be shortened to trans man, or FTM, an abbreviation for female-to-male.
Transgender woman
A term used to describe someone who is assigned male at birth but identifies and lives as a woman. This may be shortened to trans woman, or MTF, an abbreviation for male-to-female.
Two-Spirit
Is an umbrella term traditionally used by Native American people to recognise individuals who possess qualities of both genders
Ze / Hir
Alternate pronouns that are gender-neutral. Pronounced "zee" and "here" they replace “he” and “she” and “his” and “hers” respectively. Alternatively, some people who are not comfortable/do not embrace he/she use the plural pronoun “they/their” as a gender neutral singular pronoun.
gender does not mean pronouns you can be agender and still have pronouns. there are many to choose from, but that doesn't mean that you have to worry about it

We just finished the whole LGBTQ flag merge game, and it was surprisingly helpful! So we wanted to make a collection of all the flags/terms in it (so far.)
The idea is, if anyone gets curious about a term, we tell them it's definition.

My headcanons for characters sexualities in my fav shows pt. 2
“My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” and “My Little Pony: New Generation”
Equestria always celebrated diversity and love; especially on days like Hearts and Hooves day and…. Love Parade being organised once a moon and acompaniated with great orchestras near picnic places where friends, families and lovers meet to spend a little bit of time together
Tumblr media
How can we not start with classic - mane six (please ignore lack of cutie marks and weird placement of flags colours I forgot to add them and after everything was already coloured so I come up with this).
Applejack - greysexual. It’s under asexual umbrella and means rare experience of sexual attraction so it falls in grey area between allosexuality and asexuality.
Rarity - coeosexual. Complicated name but not so complicated definition. Coeosexuality is specific type of demisexuality in which individual feel sexual attraction to someone if they develop this feeling upon meeting for the first time, kinda like love at first sight.
Fluttershy - intersex. Intersexual person have both małe and female organs, variation of hormones, gonads etc. Shortly speaking someone with things characteristic for both genders in which one can be dominating or not (f.e. Biological woman with XY chromosomes - at the outside she is just like any other women but chromosomes tell something different).
Twilight - bisexual. Feeling sexual attraction to two genders (bi = two)
Pinkie Pie - polisexual. Polisexual people are not the same as polyamorous, polysexual people feel sexual attraction to many but not all genders while polyamorous people want to have multiple partners at the same time. (I know transition from point A to point B is wonky here but I feel that a lot of people don’t know a difference).
Rainbow Dash - neptunic. I was also thinking about gynosexual but neptunic is lesser known term. It is a form of bisexuality where person feel sexual attraction to nonbinary people and women or person having lack of attraction towards men and men-presenting people.
Tumblr media
Let’s move to my favourite friend group in whole series
Maud Pie and Mudbriar - cupiosexual. Cupiosexuals are asexuals who still want to be in sexual relationship. When Maud said they have a lot in common she meant it literally totally not selfinserting on my favourite ship no way.
Starlight Glimmer - idisexual. As wikia says “Someone who does not experience (or very little) sexual attraction to primary or secondary sex characteristics, but can experience sexual attraction to other physical traits, non-physical traits, and/or changeable appearance; which can also be fluid and change over time”. I couldn’t describe it better.
Trixie Lulamoon - transgender (it’s canon folks). Transgender individual identifies with different gender then the one they were born with. It’s umbrella term for all of the people feeling disconected from their birth-gender, but in Trixie’s case it’s mtf.
Sunburst - queer. Queer person is just anyone who’s not straight and/or cis. I had no headcanon for him but dude is shady and not straight -_-.
Tumblr media
Yay everyones favourite G5 (I was so burned out here and the fact that for now show goes in really bad direction is not helping)
Sunny Starscout - bi. I have a lot of bi headcanons for some reason.
Izzy Moonbow - lesbian. Homosexual woman/ woman feeling sexual attraction towards other women/ gay girl. However you name it you know what we are talking about.
Hitch Trailblazer - empty space - I have 0 thoughs about him and so does his sexuality (sorry Hitch lovers but for me he is just this generic older brother with big ego).
Pipp Petals - sapphic. Sapphic person is girl, or enby whose sexually or/and romantically attracted to female and female-presenting individuals. (Pipp have flag on wings because she works with feather-paintball company or something, no idea how influencers work).
Zipp Storm - genderfluid. As a name says your gender is fluid and that means it can change at any time (f.e. man -> nonbinary -> demi-boy -> woman).
Also - Sunny and Izzy wanted to wear leg warmers together but one of them wore them on not this pair of legs and now they are mismatched but any of them want to change it so they fight-play.
Part 1. Part 3

“Why are there so many labels?” “We need to get rid of most of these labels!” “That label is pointless!” “Everyone is like that- why does that need a label???”
I’ll tell you why!
Because, everyone is different. You see this all the time. “Can I still be x if I do this thing that people who are x aren’t known to do?”
And the answer is almost always YES!
A lot of those questions could be being asked for validation purposes. Maybe the person knows in their heart they’re x but want that reassurance. Which brings us to the source of the label “problem.”
This is an ace blog, so I’m using the ace spectrum as an example.
Asexual- someone who doesn’t experience sexual attraction.
Nice, sweet, straightforward. Except it’s not. Because many asexuals don’t know what sexual attraction feels like, because they are incapable of feeling it. So they question based off of things like “wanting sex” and “getting turned on” and “sexual fantasies.” Which means nothing, because asexuality is all about attraction. But a lot of aces talk about not liking sex, and not having sexual fantasies. Which makes aces who do want sex and who do have fantasies, feel like they’re not “real” asexuals. Which is why we ended up with labels like cupiosexual and aegosexual. That distinction matters to some aces, to the point where they prefer those labels over asexual.
And what about people who relate to aces more than allos? Who feel like they don’t fit into allonormative society? They don’t fit the definition of asexual. But they don’t fit in with allosexuals either. They want a community of like-minded people too!
And so, graysexual was born. For everyone who relates to asexuals, but have felt sexual attraction in some capacity. It’s the perfect solution!
Except... no two graysexuals are the same. Some of these grays identify as such because they’re not sure if they’re asexual so go with graysexual to be “safe.” We got grays who feel sexual attraction, but don’t want to act on it. We got grays who only feel it after knowing the person. Before knowing the person. Losing it when the person returns their feelings. Gaining it when the person shows interest. At this point, wtf is graysexual even????
So we got demisexual. We got fraysexual. We got lithosexual. We got reciprosexual. All those labels people like to complain about.
And you know what? Even within those labels, we got people who fall under those labels, feeling like they don’t fit those labels. Because they see everyone within those communities speaking/acting in a way they don’t share. Or they worry that they’re gonna get yelled at if people within that community find out they don’t 100% fit that mold. (And, given the state of the internet, I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens every day.)
So what do we get?
New labels no one who isn’t invested in microlabels has heard of. Sequencesexual. Llumsexual. Coeosexual. Pristrosexual.
And since people like coining new words whenever someone can’t find a label that 100% fits, we have more labels than anyone can keep track of. And because it’s so hard to keep track, people end up coming up with new labels when one for that experience already exists. And now, even people who are normally cool with labels think things are getting out of hand.
But these lesser-known labels are being used by people who feel like they don’t fit any of the broader definitions. People who feel like they shouldn’t identify as the thing because it’s not accurate enough. People who feel like outsiders in communities they belong in.
I am one of those people.
I go several weeks having a romantic crush on someone. And then, there’s a slight chance I end up sexually attracted to them. I look like a demisexual, right?
Wrong!
I go in demi spaces, and see demis talk about how they can only get crushes on friends. On people they know well. On people they’re close to. The literal definition is “only feeling sexual attraction to someone they have a close bond with.”
I’m not experiencing any “bonds,” because 2/3 people I’ve been sexually attracted to, I knew nothing about! I don’t feel like I fit in with demisexuals, even though it takes me time for that sexual attraction to kick in. Even though I join in with their confusion of people experiencing sexual attraction at first sight. Since there’s so much emphasis on actually knowing the person, I feel weird being in demi spaces.
But one day, I came across the term “sequencesexual” and it was far more accurate for me than demisexual. I’d rather use sequencesexual than anything else.
There’s just one problem.
There’s no community for sequencesexuals. We’ve got a label so obscure, very few people identify as it. Very few people have even heard of it to even know they can identify as it. And then there’s the added bonus of having to explain what it is every time the subject of my orientation comes up- even in ace spaces! Nice as it is to have a specific word for my experience, there’s too much effort and not enough reward in actively using that label.
So I gotta climb back up to graysexual, where I get to see all the grays in the world wonder if they’re feeling sexual attraction or not. All the grays feeling like they’re not “asexual” because they can’t figure out what their libido is directed towards. Very few of them talk about feeling the full effects of sexual attraction, so I feel shoved aside in favor of those who feel it “weakly.” And though, I could identify as demisexual if I wanted, I’d rather go by graysexual because the fact that it’s rare for me is more important to me than the fact it takes time to kick in.
So that’s the reason. That’s why we have “too many labels.” Because we got people feeling like outsiders in their own communities, and so, need to find a label that fits perfectly to avoid that imposter syndrome. And if that perfect label doesn’t exist, then someone comes up with a word for that specific experience. You can tell people they can still go by x even if they don’t conform completely, but people don’t always feel comfortable going by something they don’t conform to completely. So if they want to use a microlabel, or come up with a new label, just let them.
(These labels also exist because they’re fun to play with, are a way to share experiences, and it’s nice finding one that fits perfectly, even if it’s obscure. But no one is allowed to just have fun on the internet. So this is the explanation I’m giving.)
