Dreug, (pronounced drayk), which means meteor, falling star, or fireball, is also used in connection with ghostly lights in the night sky which portend death. A woman from South Uist told me that only recently she saw these death-lights like the tail of a comet come to rest over the house on the night her brother died. In Tiree they are also called teine-sithe - fairy-fire - and, were witnessed by Father Allan McDonald in Eriskay. Sometimes these lights were said to be caused by other spirits awaiting the soul of a dying person. They had a greenish appearance and could be seen moving about the room where a body awaited burial. The Gaels also believed that the soul after death had the appearance of a flame. On the night three men were drowned near Kyle, the lights were seen by the Rev. D. MacEchern who officiated at the funeral in 1919. Mr. MacEchern was also told by a certain Mr. Young that his mother, who lived in Latheron, had been sitting by the bed where her children slept when she saw a light brighter than a candle rise from one of her bairns. Within a couple of days, the child was dead. One woman in the Black Isle told me that the whole bedroom lit up at the moment her mother died. She and the district nurse were dazzled by its brightness. Both found the experience comforting and unforgettable. Ravens and Black Rain. Elizabeth Sutherland.

There's this comic I LOVE called Crow Time.
The author, secondlina, often posts comics on Tumblr, but I couldn't find the specific comic I want to talk about, so here is the link:
In this comic, secondlina refers to will-o'-the-wisps as omens of death. I hadn't come across this characterization of wisps, so I did some digging, and found a couple things:
1. "Corpse-candles"
We hear the following from William Wells Newell:
"First may be mentioned the so-called " corpse-candles," supposed to precede and prognosticate a death. If luminous appearances of the sort issue from the room of a sick person, and are seen to enter the churchyard, it is taken for granted that the illness will be fatal, and that the sufferer will shortly be borne to his rest along the path followed by the apparition. The movement of the flame answers to that which may be expected from the living man; if the pace be brisk, as that of a youth skipping or running, the death of a child is indicated; if slow and even, of an elderly person. In this case the vision is, so to speak, a present reflection of the future event; inasmuch as it formerly was usual to inter by night, and in consequence torches or candles were borne by the mourners, such lamps belong to the funeral procession, which appears in an anticipatory reflex."
(Basically, that wisps appear as actual harbingers of death and light the way to the churchyard where a sick person will soon be buried after they die.)
2. Spirits of the Dead
I have found that wisps have also been called the spirits of the dead, with variations being
someone who tricked the devil and therefore could enter neither heaven nor hell when they died*
someone who moved a landmark
unbaptized infants
dishonest land surveyors
*There's a huge number of stories mentioning this phenomenon, so many that it is a folkloric motif (ATU 330).
So, the connections between wisps and death is strong enough that some people would say wisps have a stronger correlation to ghosts than to fairies. That's something I have encountered in a few of the abovementioned sources, but I feel like there's a lot more research to be done in that regard. I'm more than willing to take on that monstrous task!

The Morfa Mining Disaster Premonitions
Tumblr media
Source: Alamy Stock Photos
On this day in 1890, the mine at Morfa Colliery near Port Talbot in West Glamorgan, collapsed following a subterranean explosion: 87 miners were killed. The death toll would have been greater if half the shift had not heeded the extraordinary set of supernatural visions that foretold the imminent disaster in the days beforehand.
Apparently the Red Dogs of Morfa, a pack of howling hell hounds, ran amock the previous night; a parade of phantom lights known as corpse candles paraded through the tunnels; a bloom of sweet sickly smelling corpse flowers filled the mine with its warning scent; a plague of fleeing rats was spotted running from the pit; ghostly cries were heard on the wind and phantom miners were seen trooping through the mine. For many of the living miners, these portents were enough and they stayed at home on the 10th. For those rational souls that dared the ghostly warnings, they perished in the foretold collapse.

- "The High King of the Infinite Realms, Son of the Stars" -
Tumblr media
"White hair, dark glimmering chainmail over soft leather armour and a chest plate with a d-shaped crest on it. Finely made gloves and shoulder guards. White steel toed combat boots. A blue flaming crown, a ring of the same colour. A cape that holds the night sky and a staff made from the moon."

I'm alive?
Felt inspired to design some armor via "Knight of the Boyking" by @little-dreams-of-life . And after a long debate decided I'd share my interpretation of the resident ghost boy,,,
May decide to tweak some things next time, we'll see. Happy with how this turned out though!

Processing bones in either water or earth can result in corpse wax. I do my best not to be wasteful when I am fortunate enough to find bones, and as a result, I am trying to utilize the adipocere. I was prepared for it to smell rotten , or at least gamey, but as it turns out, the smell of the beeswax far outweighs any smell that the corpse wax has!

Corpse-candle is a luminous exhalation, which, hovering over the graves is supposed to portend death, and to indicate by its course the direction the corpse-bearers will take.
If a corpse-candle burns red, it is for a man.
If a corpse-candle burns blue, it is for a child.
If a corpse-candle burns white, it is for a woman.
It is sometimes held in the hand of a ghost, who appears to warn a member of the family of a death, and then again if it is a blue flame, which issues from the lips of a sick person, indicating that he or she will surely die. If two are seen, a mother and child will die.
