I had an idea this morning. Do gods of the hunt preside over things like Easter Egg Hunts? And what if a kid managed to petition a god without realizing it? Here’s the result. -Susan
It was time for the big Easter Egg hunt again. Little Janey, four years old, was super excited. She remembered how much fun she’d had last year. But she also remembered that she’d only found two eggs. Momma had told her older brother to help, but he’d be a big stupid-head like he had last year and just run off and leave her by herself again. And the other kids had pushed her down, or knocked her out of the way.
As they drove to the park Janey closed her eyes, and wished really hard. “I want to be the bestest egg hunter. I want to find lots, and lots, and lots of eggs!”
When the egg hunt started, the other kids pushed Janey out of the way, just like last year. Except one girl about Janey’s age, with a flowy white dress, and a barrette shaped like a moon in her hair.
“C’mon,” the girl said, taking Janey’s hand. “We can find eggs better than they can.” The girl took Janey into a little bunch of bushes, and showed her how to find the eggs the other kids couldn’t see, and the places grown-ups thought were good places to hide things.
Janey and her new friend didn’t find the most eggs, but they did find lots and lots and lots, which really was what Janey had hoped for. When the hunt was over, and the grown-ups were calling, Janey tried to share her eggs with her new friend, but she only wanted one. The biggest one, but that was okay because Janey didn’t like the ones with gooey stuff inside.
“I’m Janey!” She said, holding her hand out like the grownups did when they introduced themselves. “Can we be friends?”
“I’m Diana,” the girl replied. “And I’d really like that.”

JUANA ROMANI // ARTIST
“She was a female Italian-born French portrait painter and artists’ model from the 19th century. She posed for “Diana the Huntress” sculpture by Alexandre Falguiere, as well as posing for Carolus-Duran, Ferdinand Roybet and Jean-Jacques Henner. She began to exhibit her works in 1888 regularly until 1904 and was valued as a painter of female portraits. In her later years, she became mentally unsound and was confined to a psychiatric hospital in Paris, where she died in 1924. Many of her paintings can be seen in the Musee d’Orsay.”
