The reconstructed face of the “Cheddar Man” (c. 7,000 BCE) compared to his living descendant, Adrian Targett
The Cheddar Man is a Mesolithic skeleton that was recovered from England’s Cheddar Gorge in 1903. At around 9,000 years old, the Cheddar Man is the oldest complete skeleton ever discovered in the UK, and has long been hailed as the “first Briton.” DNA analysis on the Cheddar Man from 2018 indicated that he was lactose intolerant, had light-colored eyes, dark brown or black hair, and had a dark to black skin tone. Although the discovery of the Cheddar Man’s dark skin tone was surprising for both scientists and the public alike, it corresponds with recent research suggesting that genes linked to lighter skin only began to spread into Europe about 8,500 years ago - approximately 32,000 years later than what was previously believed.
In addition to the development on his skin tone, the Cheddar Man surprised scientists in 1997 when DNA analysis revealed that he had a living descendant - a retired history teacher named Adrian Targett. Targett and the Cheddar Man share the same mtDNA, which is inherited through the mother. In other words, they share a common maternal ancestor. What is even more remarkable is that Targett lives in Cheddar, only a half mile away from where his 9,000-year-old ancestor was discovered.
Targett was not invited to the initial reveal of his ancestor’s new facial reconstruction, but he has since seen it and has commented on the family resemblance. “I do feel a bit more multicultural now,” he once joked in an interview “And I can definitely see that there is a family resemblance. That nose is similar to mine. And we have both got those blue eyes.”
The development of the Cheddar Man’s skin tone has generated resistance, especially among far-right and white supremacist circles. Targett, however, is unbothered by it, stating that it is “marvelous what scientists can reconstruct once they sequence the DNA.” When asked if he thought whether the findings affected the way people think about race, Targett responded: “Yes, I do think it’s significant. Not many people in Cheddar mind it. But the lesson is that we’re all immigrants, whether you’ve been in a place for 10 minutes or 9,000 years. We’ve all come from somewhere.”

"...the first cowboys lived in Mexico and the Caribbean, and most of them were Black. That’s the conclusion of a recent analysis of DNA from 400-year-old cow bones excavated on the island of Hispaniola and at sites in Mexico. The work, published in Scientific Reports, also provides evidence that African cattle made it to the Americas at least a century earlier than historians realized. The timing of these African imports—to the early 1600s—suggests the growth of cattle herds may have been connected to the slave trade, says study author Nicolas Delsol, an archaeozoologist at the Florida Museum of Natural History. “It changes the whole perspective on the mythical figure of the cowboy, which has been whitewashed over the 20th century.”

Twenty thousand years ago, someone dropped a deer-tooth pendant in a cave in southwestern Siberia, where it lay until archaeologists excavated it in 2019. Now, researchers have caught a glimpse of its last wearer. After years of effort, Elena Essel, a graduate student at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (EVA), developed a way to extract DNA embedded in an artifact’s porous surface by sweat and skin cells. Her team’s analysis of the ornament, reported this week in Nature, shows it once adorned a woman whose ancestry lay far east of the cave.
“It’s the first time to my knowledge that we have a nondestructive way to extract DNA from Paleolithic artifacts,” says co-author Marie Soressi, an archaeologist at Leiden University. The technique promises a window into how, and by whom, ancient ornaments and tools were used. Human DNA gleaned from their surfaces could offer “new insight into cultural practices and social structure in ancient populations,” says evolutionary biologist Beth Shapiro of the University of California, Santa Cruz.
The EVA team found some of the ancient DNA came from wapiti, the species of elk whose tooth was used to make it. But some DNA was from a female modern human; its sequence revealed she was most closely related to people of the Maltinsko-buretskaya culture, known to have lived 2000 kilometers farther east near Lake Baikal—and who are among the ancestors of Siberians, Native Americans, and Bronze Age steppe herders. By comparing the DNA from both the woman and the elk with other ancient samples, the researchers dated the pendant to between 19,000 and 25,000 years ago.
The paper has come out just in time for a new field season, Essel says. She has a request for colleagues as they unearth new artifacts: “Please, please, please wear gloves and face masks if you want to look at the DNA of the people who were making these things and using them.”
In theory, such analyses are most promising for artefacts made from animal bones or teeth, not only because they are porous and thereby conducive to the penetration of body fluids (for example, sweat, blood or saliva) but also because they contain hydroxyapatite, which is known to adsorb DNA and reduce its degradation by hydrolysis and nuclease activity. Ancient bones and teeth may therefore function as a trap not only for DNA that is released within an organism during its lifetime and subsequent decomposition but also for exogenous DNA that enters the matrix post-mortem through microbial colonization or handling by humans.

Already, DNA is used to identify individuals from biological remains and reveal large-scale relationships, from family trees to evolutionary timelines. But DNA remains constant throughout a person’s life, and it degrades badly over time. Which is why researchers are also interested in proteins, the molecules DNA encodes and that do most of the work inside our cells. If DNA keeps a static record of our ancestry, proteins, which metabolize our food, store and transport resources, and carry messages from one place to another, provide a running commentary on our health and habits. They leave evidence of our diets, our illnesses, the drugs we use, even our cause of death. And they are left behind on everything we touch.
Until recently, researchers hoping to detect traces of ancient proteins needed to destroy a small sample of the material in question in order to isolate enough molecules to get a “readable” signal. This isn’t usually a problem with biological remains such as bones or fossils, but few archivists are willing to damage an invaluable artifact like Dracula’s letter. But Gleb, an Israeli entrepreneur and inventor originally from Soviet Kazakhstan, has designed a material that can coax protein molecules from the surface of paper, parchment and paintings—even mummies and woolly mammoths—without damaging the objects themselves. Working with Pier Giorgio Righetti, an Italian chemist, he and Svetlana have used this method to explore a range of archives, arousing both excitement and consternation among historians, as the researchers report the unsuspected activities of iconic figures from Johannes Kepler to Joseph Stalin.
This article is really fascinating, especially for its implications for archivists and archival work.

The Pentagram of Pythagoras
"Pythagoras was the first of the great teachers of ancient Greece. Born in 580 B.C., Pythagoras became one of the most well known philosophers and mathematicians in history. Creating the Pythagorean Brotherhood, his teachings greatly influenced Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Pythagoras is considered as the first pure mathematician; he also founded a community/society based on religion and science. He is most widely known as the author of the Pythagorean Theorem. Some even venture to believe that the word “philosophy” was invented by Pythagoras. He claimed to be a lover of wisdom, for which the Greek word philo means love and Sophia means wisdom.
The Teachings of Pythagoras revolved around the idea that when considering the deepest level, reality is essentially mathematical in nature. Pythagoreans believed there was a system of principles that existed behind numbers. The principles form a foundation for many concepts of traditional Western thought. One of his most basic notions revolves around the symbolism and beauty associated with the Divine Proportion.
The shape of the pentad follows as the symbol of life itself. The pentad consists of all previous numerical symbols: monad’s point, the dyad’s line, the triad’s surface, and the tetrad’s three dimensional volume. The pentad also refers to the well known five point star. The pentad arises in the existence of our five fingers, five toes, the symbol that wards off evil, and a symbol for power and immunity. Because of the importance of the pentad, the construction of the symbol was first kept secret from society. The pentad was used as a secret sign among the Pythagoreans for them to distinguish themselves and recognize other members.
The pentad’s symbolism can be directly related to the Divine Proportion. And the regeneration of the pentad is related to the value of phi (Ф). The image of the pentad is found in nature in leaves and flowers. The Greeks believed each point of the pentad to represent an element: water, earth, air, fire, and idea.
At any rate all his [Pythagoras'] school in serious letters to each other began straightway with 'Health to you,' as a greeting most suitable for both body and soul, encompassing all human goods. Indeed the Pentagram, the triple intersecting triangle which they use as a symbol of their sect, they called 'Health'.
Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) wrote: "Geometry has two great treasures; one is the Theorem of Pythagoras; the other, the division of a line into extreme and mean ratio. The first we may compare to a measure of gold; the second we may name a precious jewel."
...
"The axial structure of B-DNA is shown in Figures 2 and 4. The rotation of each base pair by 36◦, in the canonical B-DNA molecule, gives a complete 360◦ rotation every 10 base pairs and results in a decagonal structure and ten-fold rotational symmetry. These properties alone relate the axial structure of the molecule to Φ. Although a molecule with a decagonal form might be expected to show some simple relationship to Φ, and while there is always a danger in seeing patterns where there may be none, the axial form of B-DNA is neatly encompassed by 10 “golden diamonds” (refer Figure 1), the template of which is shown in Figure 4B, and overlaid on Figure 4A such that points (a) and (c) are located on the outermost hydrogens and point (b) is between the outer oxygen atoms."
...
"The ancient Greek followers of the mathematician Pythagoras kept the shape as their secret symbol, a signifier of wholeness or divine blessing. Nature.
The pentagram was a symbol, but also a window of sorts. It's not a shape so much as it is a relationship. Within it we find the Golden Ratio.
The Ratio is noted for both its seemingly fundamental aesthetic appeal and its (seemingly) persistent recurrence in natural and manmade systems, from plant biology to financial markets to human DNA.
It's a way of cutting up a line that appears to be preferred by nature, anyhow. Note that every time a line crosses another line, as in the sketch below, it results in a Golden Ratio relationship between the two resulting segments. So, follow a pentagram edge down until it hits the start of another point; that corner is a Golden joint of sorts.
It's possible to connect the points of a pentagram to come up with a new pentagon and, from the new pentagon, a new pentagram. And this can go on forever:
Presumably, the Pythagoreans spent a whole lot of time staring deeply into pentagrams. Tradition has it that a young Pythagorean, Hippasus of Metapontum, was doing just that when he happened up the first proof of the existence of irrational numbers, a startling revelation for the "all is number" crowd.
Hippasus noted what you see above, that the inner core of a pentagram is a pentagon, and inside of that could be found a new pentagram. Clearly, this went on pretty much forever. And it had to, which is what was eventually proved by the Greek.
Imagine Hippasus gazing into the trippy arrangement of nested pentagrams above. Each one lives within a pentagon, with its dimensions limited by that pentagon. All of these shapes clearly live within some hard and fast relationship; they define each other. That relationship is what we'd normally think of as a ratio. One shape is to the other as some quantity a is to some quantity b."

Similar characteristics (pretty much “DNA analysis” but not really since it’s an adoptive relationship 😂)
Note: Again, I normally do “Mom and Dad” separately on another post, but 1) there’s no “mom” to do and 2) Loona’s personality is nice and quick to do, who she has more of a personality than Octavia does, since she’s first character’s daughter and critically important to the story
P.S I’m pretty sure Viv did this on purpose to make it look like Loona was biologically Blitz's daughter (both in mannerisms and personality-wise) even though in appearance we can clearly see she’s a hellhound lol
Blitz (Dad):
• Sensitive - way deep down inside
* Both father and daughter put their walls up to protect their emotions from everyone else but use two different types of coping mechanisms; Blitz will use comedy whilst Loona will use indifference (unless it’s a circumstance like what happened with Octavia where she was not as hostile)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Smoker (pure coincidence)
* Most likely she did it at the age of 17 years old because Loona is her own person and wasn’t influenced by Blitz at all. Given that he would be the type of parent not to do it in front of her but gives up after learning about her being a smoker and sees not point in hiding it any longer 😂
• Bantering
* Whether Loona is laughing at something Blitz had said to Moxxie or he just participates alongside his daughter with the slander that’s being thrown at his employee (like seriously! The way it’s done… it’s almost a “father/daughter” thing, to pick on Moxxie 🤣)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Both Loona and Blitz, at different times, told the clients — Loopty Goopty (1x04) and the other to Crimson’s goons (2x03) — to “use the door” rather than blowing up I.M.P’s walls. If THAT is not a like father like daughter moment I don’t know WHAT is 😆)
* Again, one was out of indifference and the other was a comedic running joke
• Ridiculing people at their expense
* Loona = Blitz (rarely) and Millie (one off)
* Blitz = Moxxie (mainly) and others
• Amicable (selective)
* Loona = Octavia of the Ars Goetia
* Blitz = I.M.P’s clientele
• Family orientated
* Blitz as Loona’s adoptive dad (duh! 😆)
* Loona as Octavia’s (surrogate) sister
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Body languages
* Deer-in-headlights
* Nervous mannerisms
* Hands on hips and a scowl
(Although I’m pretty sure Blitz just copied Loona’s stance, for he deliberately looked at what she was doing and did the same, I don’t if this was a “I want to become closer to my daughter, so I’ll copy her” or a “I’m just Blitz being Blitz” thing 🤣)
• Approving (secretly)
* Loona = Blitz’s paternalism
* Blitz = Stolas’s appearance & personality
• Vulnerable (very rarely)
* Blitz = Stage fright (2x02)
* Loona = Getting her hellbies shot (2x04)
• Pushes people away
* Loona = Blitz (mainly) and others
* Blitz = Anyone gets too close to him
• Bashful when it becomes sexually attracted
Blitz = Striker trying to explain his affair with Stolas
Loona = Explaining to Vortex why vortexes are “hot”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Aggressive & vulgar
• Antisocial
• Attentive
Facial expressions:
(I KID YOU NOT! 🤯)
• Dejected
* Especially their respective love interests
Blitz = Stolas after what happened at Ozzie’s
Loona = Vortex after finding out that his girlfriend is drop dead gorgeous and is no competition
• Concerned (rare)
• Contempt
• Shocked
• Irritation
• Smug
• Stoic

Ancestry.com can’t decide what I am.
It keeps changing my results.
I used to be like 72% Scottish and Irish and like 14% English
Then it said I was 70% Scottish and 20% Irish with some German and English mixed in
Now it’s convinced I’m 40% English, 2%irish, and 30% Scottish and some kind of French bitch.
So I think I’m a shape shifter and for those of you wondering yes our body parts that are separate from us do shift with us.
Stay tuned for what I become next in three months.

Something I do kind of feel unhappy about is that we did this whole DNA thing a while ago to find family. To connect and feel accepted. When we found out who our bio grandfather was and that we had family on that side we were excited but that was over a year ago. Our dad got to meet his bio dad because of us and was accepted right away but we have only talked to 3 people on that side of the family and only once or twice
Once again we feel like we are thrown to the side.
