FILM EDITOR DODY DORN VOTED TO ACADEMY BOARD OF GOVERNORS IN RUNOFF ELECTION

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that Dody Dorn has won the runoff election for the open Film Editors Branch seat on the 2019–20 Board of Governors. Dorn joins incumbents Carol Littleton and Michael Tronick in representing the branch and will assume her post as of July 1.

Dorn and Mark Goldblatt tied for the seat in the Board election last week, and Film Editors Branch members were asked to vote in the runoff. This is the fifth time in Academy history that a tie occurred in the balloting. Runoff elections were held in 2009 in the Directors Branch, 2015 in the Writers Branch, 2016 in the Film Editors Branch, and 2018 in the Producers Branch.

The Academy’s 17 branches are each represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms. The Board of Governors sets the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health, and assures the fulfillment of its mission.

원래는 2012년에 잭 스나이더의 데뷔작 《새벽의 저주》의 속편으로 제작될 영화였으나 취소되었다. 그 때 당시에도 제목은 《Army of the dead》였으며, 내용은 "딸을 구하기 위해 용병들과 함께 좀비들로 가득한 라스베이거스로 들어가는 전직 경찰관의 이야기"로 전개될 예정이었다. 그 시놉시스를 가지고 《300》을 끝낸 후 바로 제작에 들어갔지만 《왓치맨》 영화화의 새로운 감독으로 내정되는 바람에 아미 오브 더 데드의 제작을 연기하였고, 이후 다시 재개하려 했으나 이번에는 또 다시 《맨 오브 스틸》의 감독으로 발탁되면서 제작과 각본 밖에 참여하지 못하게 되었다. 감독 후보에는 더 씽의 감독인 매티스 밴 헤이닝건 주니어가 내정되기도 했지만, 결국 제작이 취소되었던 전례가 있다. 이렇게 아미 오브 더 데드는 DC 코믹스 원작 기반의 대형 프로젝트들에 의해 미루고 미뤄진 작품이었다. 그러나 더욱 아이러니하게도 DC 코믹스 영화화 대형 프로젝트 중 가장 핵심 정수가 될만한 기획물이었던 저스티스 리그의 실패 속에 얽힌 어둡고 복잡한 제작 비화, 그리고 그 제작 비화를 통해 벌어진 잭 스나이더 사단과 워너 브라더스와의 관계 악화, 그리고 잭 스나이더의 안타까운 개인적인 사연으로 인한 중도 하차 때문에 결국 잭 스나이더 본인이 이 영화의 메가폰을 다시 잡게 되었다. 현재 이 영화는 좀비물과 하이스트 영화 장르가 뒤섞인 영화로 계획되었는데, 과연 2012년 당시의 시놉시스에서 새로운 아이디어가 추가된 작품일지 혹은 새벽의 저주 속편이 아닌 별개의 작품이 되었을지는 두고 봐야 할 듯. 이후 공식 예고편에선 지능을 가진 우두머리 좀비[4]가 좀비들을 통솔하며, 호랑이, 말을 비롯한 동물 좀비가 나오고[5] 좀비들의 신체능력이 강화되어 공격을 회피하거나 군인과 근접 격투를 벌이는 등, 새벽의 저주에서 보여주었던 좀비 설정과 많은 점이 달라졌음이 드러났다. 단, 좀비 설정이 달라졌다고해서 새벽의 저주 후속작으로 볼 수 없다고 단언하기는 어려웠으나.. 선 15분 공개된 영상을 보면 걷는 형태의 느릿한 좀비들과 새벽의 저주와 같은 세계관이로 보긴 힘든 장면들이 나오며 별개의 작품으로 확정된 것으로 보인다.[6]
