The analyses of Barbie bombing in Korea…. Like it’s interesting in a vacuum but it would be funny to flip it and write articles like that about movies that kill it overseas and don’t take off in America.
“Gangubai Kathiawadi was a hit in Asia! Why can’t it replicate that success in America?”

This whale may be the largest animal ever. We have no idea how it got that big.
A newly discovered extinct whale called P. colossus is challenging the blue whale for the title of heaviest animal to ever exist.
Dubbed by its discoverers Perucetus colossus, or simply P. colossus, the titanic animal may not be just a record setter. P. colossus is also compelling scientists to reconsider their ideas about how animals are able to grow to gigantic sizes. “This is another way in which you can get big,” said Hans Thewissen, a paleontologist and whale evolution expert at Northeast Ohio Medical University. With a body that looked vaguely like that of a manatee rather than a blue whale’s, it clearly did something different than other whales to maintain its huge mass...

Psycho-Pass Providence:
my attempt to write a movie review.
I finally went to the movies and watched Psycho-Pass Providence with a friend last Tuesday. I knew the film would be packed with plot and action so we decided to see the German dubbed version. We just wanted to have a good time, and some nachos with cheese dip and beer. The cinema was maybe a quarter full which I don’t think is too bad for a weekday. There even was a girl cosplaying as Akane. I was pretty nervous the whole day. After reading so many negative reviews on Tumblr over the past few months, I prepared myself for the worst. Will Providence ruin this series for me? Is Shinkane dead? My friend encouraged me by saying, “watch the movie and form your own opinion”, and that’s what I did!
Providence is a diffuse colossus of a story but I liked it much better than PP3. The story is very action-heavy and plot-driven. You can feel the absence of Urobuchi’s writing because relatively little emphasis is placed on the emotions of the characters or their development. The dialogues are rather short and the action scenes quite long. Explosions and battles largely replace social criticism. Precious moments are few and far between. I think Ubukata came up with a really cool and offbeat plot, it’s just way too big for one movie. He should have made Providence into a series with many episodes, but that’s just my opinion. I can’t shake the feeling that he simply placed the characters into his massive plot as if they were chess pieces. Everyone does their job. They rush from one action to the next. Saiga is dead. On it goes. Akira is dead. There are no breaks. The ending is also very rushed and if I hadn’t already known why Akane shoots chief Kasei, I probably would have left the cinema with a massive question mark.
The Shinkane content in Providence is quite nice. And to say it right away: yes, I saw their hands touch in that bridal carry scene. It was very clear and less rushed than I thought. I’m just not sure if their fingers were intertwined or if Kogami had his fingers around Akane’s hand squeezing it. The phone call was also funny. My friend just sighed in her seat next to me and said a little too loudly: “I can’t believe Akane is in love with this clumsy idiot! Why can’t he just apologize?” Yeah, why? Akane hung up the phone and her face was so adorable. The romantic comedy was only perfect when Saiga cheered Kogami on in the elevator afterwards (“Come on, make an effort!”) and Ko acted like a petulant child (“I don’t know what you mean!”). Really, Ko? You were playing dumb in front of sensei? Was Kogami embarrassed that his former teacher was interfering in their relationship? However, these two were in dire need of counselling that’s why I found the idea of Saiga acting as their therapist quite entertaining.
I still don’t know what to make of Shinkane in Providence. I have too many thoughts and feelings, that’s why I’d like to deal with this topic separately in another post. Shinkane is not dead at all, but it hasn’t evolved either. Each of them basically does their own thing when it comes to work and I can’t shake the impression that Akane would have found Kogami rather unsexy if she had met him for the first time in PPP. I love Kogami, but he doesn’t contribute much to the story except that he saves Akane’s life in the end.
Now that I’ve seen the film, it sounds more than absurd to claim that they have no other relationship than a collegial working relationship. I mean, it’s obviously not work or a shared conviction that ties them together and makes Akane answer the phone late at night, but their old acquaintance. They have an unresolved personal conflict between them, and a wide range of unexplored emotions. All the social awkwardness fits in with that. And the creators even went one step further with the romantic scenes:
I already knew about the scene in which Kogami jumps on top of Akane (and between her legs) to protect her from an explosion but I didn’t expect the whole thing to play out in slow motion. Holy shit! My heart leapt. I mean, what am I looking at here if not a romantic subplot? You can see every detail crisp and clear: how his hands are embracing and protecting her head from the impact, how their bodies stick together rather indecently. And Akane and Ko don’t immediately get up and run, no. They stay put for the time being looking at each other and then Ko states the obvious like a brain dead fool: “It’s a dangerous place, we should retreat.”
Yeah, well… who would have thought that explosions and shootings would be dangerous? Kogami’s blood must have gone from his brain to some other part of his body, there’s no other way to explain this level of silliness. We’ve already seen Kogami protecting Akane from an explosion before. He threw her like a sack of potatoes in the movie but THIS is something else entirely. THIS is screaming “You’re the most precious person on earth to me”. Same goes for the bridal carry. The scene isn’t as rushed as their encounter in the wheat field, no. The animators kind of savour their last scene in Providence and you have to be wilfully blind to not notice Kogami’s affection for Akane or their touching hands.
I can understand the widespread criticism of Kogami’s strange behaviour in PPP. It’s not quite what I expected either, but I didn’t expect anything else. Sounds crazy, huh? I know. I don’t know if Ubukata’s writing style is to blame for Ko’s derailment. I guess the writers deliberately wanted to create some tension in the form of personal conflict which is a common and cheap trick that can also be found in romantic YA literature.
It is nevertheless credible to a certain extend. Kogami has returned to a world with a wall between latent criminals and citizens with healthy Psycho-Passes. Social conventions are a corset. They make us act differently. The fact that he doesn’t hit on Akane actually says a lot of good things about his character. He knows nothing about her life, except that it hasn’t gone down the drain yet. What role does he still play in Akane’s life? Does she even need his help? When you look at Kogami’s issue with addressing Akane properly, it becomes clear that he’s uncertain: kanshikan, omae, anta, yo. Akane has already gathered a team around her and Kogami is standing outside the door. He’s the odd man out. He’s also an incorrigible idiot who doesn’t have it in him to apologize.
They give each other nothing at first. That’s why I like the scene in the hospital so much because it changes their relationship for good. Akane’s visit is proof to Kogami that he is important to her. She cares about his health and she even takes the cigarette from his mouth. Akane also invites him to join her team (“We’re a team, right?”) and you can see the relief on Kogami’s face. After that, their interactions become lighter and more honest. Team PSB and Team SAD no longer go separate ways.
I really like the camaraderie between Kogami and Frederika. I found them both very independent in their work, which led me to ask whether Frederika is his boss at all. I read somewhere that they both have the same rank of “special investigator” which also fits in well with the way they talk to each other. I remember Akane asking Kogami during their phone call what Yabuki thought of his past actions. I guess that makes Shogo Yabuki his boss and Frederika his senpai? There was one thing that annoyed me, though, and that was that Frederika did everything her boss Yabuki told her to do. She even kept it a secret from Kogami that they were using Saiga as bait. Why didn’t she say “no” for once?
Providence has a few highlights that I just can’t leave unmentioned. It isn’t the best film, but it’s also not as bad as many have made it out to be. The scene in which Gino grabs Kogami by the collar, calls him an asshole and pushes him roughly against the glass pane of the office was quite the cliché. It could have come straight from a fan fic. Kogami remains calm and I don’t find him arrogant. Sugo tries to intervene, but I had the impression that it’s primarily Akane’s staged indifference towards Kogami that keeps Gino from exploding with rage. Gino pulls himself together the moment he sees Akane entering the office. If there’s one thing I love about their dynamics, it’s how they always try to protect each other in the most subtle but effective way. Gino is like the big brother we all want to have. He is by Akane’s side after Saiga dies and he reminds Kogami of the duty to not let Akane become a latent criminal. I can’t say often enough how much I adore Ginoza and his loyalty to Akane.
But Gino does not only protect Akane, he also saves Frederika’s life twice. These two have a little scene in Providence that I find cute. Standing amidst the ruins of the building after the battle, Gino asks Frederika how she is. She says “not too bad” while stroking her hair almost sheepishly like a schoolgirl. Is it the first time that a colleague asks Frederika about her well-being? Is this how things are at the SAD? I never saw Kogami turn around to look at her, even though she always saves his stupid ass from getting kicked. And her boss Yabuki only ever entrusted her with the most dangerous missions (aka “dirty work in the name of justice”). It really sucks to be a strong woman sometimes. It sucks when performance is always expected without complaint. That’s why it’s all the more refreshing when a hot guy like Gino asks if you’re still alive, right Frederika?
Overall, it was very cool to see Frederika on the battlefield since she’s quite capable and knows how to handle weapons. I didn’t like her passive role in PP3, where she just sat in her neat little office and gave orders. PP is kind of understaffed in terms of female characters so it was good to see Frederika having a more active role this time. I hope that in the future they will give her a backstory. It’s more the personal things that make a character interesting for me. I mean, what was her relationship with Yabuki? She shed a tear after his death, or was this just an optical illusion?
There was nothing to complain about the quality of the animation in Providence. It was first class. The wedding was beautiful and I really liked the colours and fireworks of the Chinese New Year festival in the streets of Dejima. It made a nice contrast to the gloomy dark dystopian world of Sibyl. The Chinese New Year also brings me directly to the scene that, oddly enough, touched me the most: Akira’s death. Atsushi Shindou shoots him on the roof of the MoFA as the fireworks go off and with his last words Akira says, “Take care of Kei, I want him to have a different life than mine.” It was a beautiful but also very sad moment. There were many deaths in the film but the pace of the story was way too fast for me to mourn them properly. It’s a shame, especially since most of the time was spent on action scenes. I don’t know how many minutes I watched Sugo trying to shoot a satellite out of the sky with his drone.
Saiga’s death is tragic but it has great influence on Akane. In the end, his last words (“justice and truth are multifaceted”) encourage her to stand up for her convictions and turn against Sibyl in order to uphold the law. I noticed that Saiga is already very tired at the beginning of Providence, as if he no longer expects anything great from life and prefers to pass the baton to the younger generation. Perhaps that is also why he tries to persuade Kogami to bury the hatchet with Akane. “You should apologize to her. Take this advice from an old man like me.” It seems that he wanted to leave the world in peace, knowing that he has given his students all he could give. So from that point of view, his passing is dignified. His hands are even folded and placed on top of his chest after he dies. I couldn’t help but think that it is meant as a religious gesture: that he will be accepted by God if not by Sibyl.
Sibyl is as disgusting as ever and that’s all there is to say. Their hypocrisy is simply unbearable. And then no one has the courage to stand up for the preservation of the rule of law – least of all the Ministry of Justice. What a joke! We also learn that it’s totally fine for Sibyl to give absolution and sovereignty to a group of criminals (the Peacebreakers) as long as they come from their own criminal ranks. Well, one crow does not peck out another crow’s eye, right? I don’t know whether Atsushi Shindou could be trusted or not, although he has pulled some important strings in the background. The old man seemed weary just like Saiga, but he thought very highly of Akane and campaigned for her in front of Sibyl which made him likeable in my eyes. He was also a good mentor.
I must not forget to mention the true antagonists of the story, first and foremost Tonami the White. He is the leader of the Peacebreakers, a group of former soldiers and mercenaries of Sibyl who see themselves in the tradition of a cult. They worship a similar AI like Sibyl that also has wired brains in boxes and they see it as their God and commander. The cult did seem rather bizarre and fantastic sometimes, but I got the impression that this is exactly Ubukata’s style.
Tonami is a despicable man. He tells Akane that despite his old age, he can still take on a young girl like her, then he draws a gun and starts to shoot her. Congratulations, man! She’s unarmed, and pulling a trigger is really not much of a feat. Asshole! He was clearly afraid that Akane would be superior in a fistfight.
I remember a heated debate on social media about whether Kogami should have killed Tonami or not. Well, I would argue that he had no choice but to shoot this man if he wanted to make sure Akane got out of there alive (“Protect Tsunemori!”). Akane looks relieved when she sees Kogami. She smiles at him as if she knows that her life is safe from now on. But then she continues to provoke Tonami with her words. The man points a damn gun to her head and she has already been shot twice and lies bleeding on the floor in handcuffs. Should Kogami twiddle his thumbs and wait to see what happens? Well, he does. But only for a moment.
Kogami’s face is empty while Akane is being tortured. It’s devoid of emotion, not even anger shows on his face. I was like: huh? I first thought it was bad animation or some artificial intervention to evade romance and keep the Kouakas from losing their minds, but in retrospect, it occurred to me that perhaps… Kogami is simply listening to the conversation in front of him? Akane and Tonami are talking about the Sibyl System and it’s true nature. They are talking about AI vs. humanity. They are talking about integrating this other AI into Sibyl and the boxes with the brains are standing just a few meters away from them. Snippets and fragments, but Kogami isn’t stupid. It was him who found a decapitated professor Stronskaya on the ship. Her head was taken away by the Peacebreakers and we later learn that her brain was put into a box for their AI. Kogami has been wondering for a while what kind of influence Akane has on the system. And even Tonami (who calls her “a witch that disturbs the social order”) is kind of astounded at what Akane knows and what she is capable of.
Kogami agrees with Tonami and then shoots him in the head. I really don’t know which part he agrees with. I can only explain it by saying that, unlike Akane, Kogami has lost faith in humanity. Kogami knows what humans are capable of and that they are easily corrupted. But he believes in Akane, so there’s that. It’s only natural that he would save her at any cost.
I didn’t perceive Akane as angry though. She knows Kogami well enough and wanted him to come with her on the mission. Kogami “breaking the law again” certainly saddens and disappoints her, but I don’t think she necessarily wants to enforce him. Atsushi Shindou shot Akira in front of Akane and she didn’t arrest him. If she were now to arrest Kogami, she would have double standards. I remember director Shiotani saying in an interview that Kogami voluntarily let Akane arrest him. Well, that actually sounds quite logical to me because I honestly don’t see Akane taking the initiative. But Kogami acting like a repentant little puppy in front of Akane, the “goddess and bodhisattva” he expects to make the world a better place? Yes, I can very well imagine that – only that at this point she is just a bleeding human being in his arms.
Akane’s incident was… wow. I knew what she was up to beforehand, but I still found the whole thing quite mind-boggling. Where did Akane get the gun she shot chief Kasei with? Everyone was looking forward to her inauguration. Gino, Sugo, Shion and Yayoi… they were watching it on TV. What has my girl done?
I wouldn’t go so far as to blame Kogami. There is a trend right now to make him the scapegoat for everything that happens to Akane, but somehow that is not right and would completely undermine Akane’s independence. There is no guarantee that the arrest and prosecution of Tonami would have worked. Sibyl is not a reliable negotiating partner. I think Akane chose a more effective way by immediately involving the public and getting them to discuss the preservation of the law. At least, it worked. But why the letter to Kogami? It wasn’t a tit-for-tat response. I think Akane wanted to say goodbye. She didn’t know what would happen to her or whether they would see each other again. These two threw their lives away and stood up for their beliefs in justice. Was it brave or was it foolish? Who knows. But the closing of a circle was pretty well executed by the creators of the series in my opinion.
I still have no clue why Kogami was released from confinement. I can only speculate that MoFA has negotiated a deal. I also remember that his Psycho-Pass was encrypted in PP3 and no longer accessible via Sibyl’s dominator. There is a strong competition between the ministries and certainly no help can be expected from Sibyl. Mika had to literally beg chief Kasei to allow her to send out a rescue mission for Akane who was already classified as a traitor because she went to take on the Peacebreakers on her own. Why would they let Kogami go, the traitor who killed a criminal pardoned by Sibyl in order to rescue the traitor Akane? No. He was released at the behest of MoFA. It is therefore not surprising that Akane has arranged the transfer of Gino and Sugo to MoFA. Nothing bothers Sibyl more than loyal dogs and I’m certain that these two would have been thrown into the isolation facility the moment Akane lost her position as inspector.
Okay, I’ll stop rambling now. I’d like to end this post with a quote from the friend who went with me to the movies. We saw Psycho-Pass together five years ago and I was very curious to hear her opinion. We both agreed that Akane's performance in Providence is once again superb. She’s a queen. One of the best female characters of all time. What she said about Kogami may irritate some but I can only agree: “It wasn’t his most mature performance, but in the end he could be relied upon!”
Providence was fun. It was okay. It wasn’t Psycho-Pass at its best but at least, it answered the question that has been on my mind for almost four years: what did Akane do that landed her in prison?

how would the cons, bots, and elite bots react to the fact bee's parents are basically their gods
how would sari react too????
I love this au so much <3333 (it's funny af and has great potential for chaos)
Well, the others wouldn't really know they are gods since Primus and Unicron are not allowed to reveal themselves- hence the disguises and alias'. Bee knows they're gods but he's not allowed to speak about it either, he only refers to them as Sire and Papa anyway.
While Prisma and Unis know they are the gods, they speak about their god-names as if they were separate beings(mostly when they're arguing) to keep their covers- religion is a minority on Cybertron since the war began so it's rare to see someone speak about the gods so much. They are seen as religious to say the least.
When Unis shows up in earth he's wrecking shit up for fun and the autobots come to stop him- he does his gig with "you have no chance against me! I will destroy you!" before he notices the tiny yellow bot standing in the group and changes his attitude to happy-go-lucky, The others are very confused and alarmed when Bee runs towards te colossus, even more so but add shocked when he picks Bee up and starts baby-talking to him and Bee yells; "Meet my Creator!"
They are sceptical and wary of Unis cuz this mech just threatened to kill them and now he's acting all friendly and good. He straight up says he was gonna destroy the planet for fun but he can't do that since his beloved sparkling (and his friends) live here.
And so Unis is a "guest" in the plant for few weeks. He's like gremlin-mode Bumblebee but worse- he dubbed Sari an abomination when Bee introduced her to him, Unis was quick to clarify he likes her very much and insults are his way of showing affection(in a way). She was hurt at first but quickly got used ot this weird affection Bee's dad gave her. She likes to go messing around with them in the middle of nowhere sometimes.
He doesn'd do shit when there's something bad happening and the team has to go take care of it. In fact, half of the calls happen cuz he's causing trouble. He's also encouraging Bee causing mischieft and doing pranks and saying he's "going in his Creator's pedesteps".
Unis had bragged about being the strongest warrior in the entire reality known, he's detroyed planets single-handedly and wrecked thousands of soldiers that happened to get in his way. Team Prime has a reason to be wary of him, not just because he's a giant.
The Decepticons straight up skidaddle on the sight of him- he's triple the size of Blitzwing AND wielding a giant double-sided axe. One time Megatron got his servos on Bee and threatened the other Autobots that he'll hurt him, Unis seemed to just materialize out of thin air behind him and politely got his attention before he suplexed him with one servo. The 'cons are straight up avoiding the yellow mini now in both fear of what other fucked up abilities he has and because they don't wanna be pavement on the courtesy of his apparently Creator.
Sentinel is giving Bee all the respect and praise he "held back on" the moment Unis approaches him from behind while Sentinel is trash-talking Bee and excuses them both so they can go on the promised treasure hunt.
While Unis does seem like the strongest in the universe, he's not on either side of the war. He calls it stupid and says that he "spreads the chaos equally".
Then Prisma shows up. He drops from the sky and seizes Unis by his horn. He says few things to his "little sunray" and promises to visit soon before leaving thru a "space bridge" with his husband.
Bee then tells them that was his Sire.
If Ratchet was questioning how this colossus Unis managed to take care of such tiny Sparkling like Bee then now he's questioning how the frag Bee is so small if he got 2 literal giants for Creators- and he doesn't look like he was adopted by them.
And yeah, Prisma does show up unexpectedly like a week later- they find him sitting in the main room with Bee, he was recovering from an injury so they left him in base for the call and when they come back- oop, there's a fucking huge airplane just sitting in the plant. How did he fit in the room? None of them know!
Surprisingly, Prisma is very likeable and they actually get to be kinda friends with him instead of being afraid- well, they're still scared cuz he does clarify he'll send Unis to wreck chaos if something happened to Bee but he's not as aggressive as Unis. He's not even violent- physically at least. He's also on neither side of the war- he says it's a pointless tragedy and he's giving help to anyone in need.
Prisma is similar to Prowl actually, he's calm, respectful and the responsible parent- he doesn't let Bee cause any trouble (most of the time). He actually made Bee apologize when he called Prowl's documentaries boring; "Just because his interests don't align with yours, it doesn't mean they are any less than what you enjoy." He has said.
Now, the 'cons and Elite Guard are still scared shitless from Unis' visit so they also avoid him. Bee and Sari have the fun flying together in his cockpit and seeing stars and galaxies from the "projector"- it's like they were actually in space!
Prisma leaves and things have quieted down. But all of the eath transformers were traumatized enough to treat Bee with respect. His team still bosses him around a bit cuz he is a teammate but they certainly are worried of what might happen if they so much as insulted him. But the tension shrinks the further Bee's parents' visits were in the calendar.
Now i have few funny ideas with BlitzBee and "meeting the in-laws" that i vaguely mentioned in this post. But i also think ProwlBee would fit. Feel free to send questions about whichever you want.

okay here's how you design a fantasy weapon pls like and subscribe follow me for more tips-
Tumblr media
Kidding- but this was sent to me by Dyl just a while ago and I just had to.
I do actually love seeing these wild designs, there's more imagination in them than you can beat out of a roomful of AI "artists".
Art by Peter Andrew Jones if I'm not mistaken.
Tumblr media
I do wish there were more of them around, just over-the-top bullshit that doesn't take itself too seriously.
This one's from The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982). It's a sword with THREE blades. Two of them shoot out of the hilt as projectiles- I love it. I would never use it.
Tumblr media
I set out posting my art online initially to design "practical fantasy weapons", and while I haven't abandoned the "practical" part myself, going nuts on weapon designs is still just really fun to do.
Saradomin Godsword from OldSchool Runescape and the newfangled RS3 version.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doesn't have to be "practical". Depending on the context, the looks can be more important than the functionality.
Sanderson depicts shardblades in The Stormlight Archive as being ultralight to justify their size. Fun middleground, but not always necessary.
Art by Alex Allen.
Tumblr media
There are weapons that will forever be iconic BECAUSE they went nuts with 'em.
Of course they also went nuts with the people using them, so there's internal consistency, but the point stands.
Guts' Dragonslayer, Berserk (1989-2021) by Kentaro Miura.
Tumblr media
Cloud Strife's Buster Sword, Final Fantasy 7 (1997) by Square Enix, image from the 2020 Remake
Tumblr media
Moonlight Greatsword, in one of its many iterations, this time as Ludwig's Holy Blade from Bloodborne (2015) in The Old Hunters DLC by From Software
Tumblr media

Just- don't pretend you could ever use them in the real world, yourself.
Actual martial artists can already hurt themselves using tried-and-tested weapons from history (i.e. there is someone to learn how they use them from), let alone the average untrained gamer with something out of fantasy.
Doesn't stop people from trying. Baltimore Knife and Sword are among the many blacksmiths who routinely produce real world versions of fictional weaponry (look up Man at Arms: Reforged on YouTube) and recently Digitally Twisted Outlaws (also on YouTube) started training with one such giant replica Dragonslayer, and dubbed their weapon-style the "Colossus Sword Form".
Bottom line, just have fun with it. Don't get too bogged down by what's consistent with real world usage, especially when the context is fictional.

something i forgot until somebody pointed it out again: after reiner reveals his and bertl's identites (as the armoured and colossus titans respectively) to eren in the manga, bertl says "what are you telling him?" i believe he says this in the anime but the subtitles translate it as "why are you telling him?" (the dub does this too). it makes it look like bertl confirms what reiner is saying, when in the source material he doesn't. he still tries to cover it up, gives reiner a last chance to take it back. this makes his "yeah, reiner's just tired" after make more sense.

⌜❝ 𝙸𝙸. 𝚂𝙴𝚁𝙿𝙴𝙽𝚂.
the area iovita makes their home in and claims as their land in this verse is a valley. it could entirely be considered a perfectly fertile valley. enriched by volcanic soil and a wide, winding river. the flat land of the valley floor would have made a wonderful place for a town, a city, even. but instead it lays vastly empty, except for a couple villages. any farms started along the river lay half-started and then abandoned.
the river that winds across the valley floor is dubbed the snake river. lazy, wide, and prone to flooding. mountains ring the valley bowl, and the western range has an old name: mons serpens. this is the range that holds the cave iovita claims as their own. and it's a place both villages warn people away from. the evergreen forest a mile around the cave has been laid waste to several times over. not a single old growth tree still lives. the tall pines only grow greenery at the very tops, the bases of them scorched and blackened. their dead brethren are pale white and soot-marked skeletons. small, young pines grow thick and competitive at their bases. purple flowers flourish in sunlit areas, creating bright carpets of color. most people in the surrounding area know not to venture too far into the young trees, and because of it the area is filled with often-hunted wildlife, despite the fact that a predator lives in the mountain tunnels just above their heads. the only paths through are meandering game trails. the undergrowth is far too thick to go crashing about in, otherwise.
far above their cave, sheltered in a bowl in the mountains, is lake colossus. a massive, ice-cold glacial lake. to people, this signifies the last major landmark of the local dragon's territory.
iovita's cave itself is a twisting mess of chambers, snaking through the mountains they made their home. the main one is the biggest, fit for the massive bulk of their dragon form. the smaller ones are closest to the surface. modified by careful, steady hands to truly resemble a home. a bedroom, a library, a tucked away tunnel that leads to a deep hot spring for bathing. a path to the surface that exits onto a ridge where they make a garden and have planted fruit trees. they don't spend all their time in their dragon form, although they have patterns. when alone for years on end, they prefer to be large and monstrous. when with company, lasting company, they tend to prefer to look more human in appearance.

Few individuals in Egypt’s history have aroused as much curiosity, and as much skepticism, as Ramses II, third pharaoh of the 19th dynasty, whom history dubbed Ramses the Great.
Today, Ramses II is probably best known for leaving behind a monumental set of works — palaces, temples, statues, stelae — each one extolling his pharaonic achievements.
Every battle was a mighty triumph, every building spectacular, every statue and public work magnificent, every act a near superhuman achievement.
Ramses’ family came to power as outsiders.
They were northerners hailing from the Nile Delta and rose through military service, rather than southerners rising from elite circles in Thebes.
To rally support, Ramses II used these massive monuments to appeal to the people as part of a campaign to proclaim his greatness for all to see.
Ramses lived around 90 years and ruled for almost 70.
Thanks to his building campaigns, Egyptologists know much about his public accomplishments, but questions about his wives and children still remain.
Great royal wives
One of the most striking aspects of Ramses II’s story is the women who surrounded him:
Great royal wives and concubines, secondary wives and daughters, whom he sometimes “married,” for political show or perhaps for real.
He produced an extraordinary number of sons and daughters:
Some records say as many as a hundred. Because of his long reign, many of his children predeceased him.
Tumblr media
Out of all of his wives, only two were known to have had prominent roles:
Nefertari and Isetnofret, the first two named great royal wives.
While the former figures prominently in Egyptian sources and countless representations of her exist, little is known of the latter, almost as if Ramses wanted her hidden.
It is only natural to wonder about the reasons for such unequal treatment.
When he became co-regent with his father, Seti I, Ramses II received a palace in Memphis, just south of the Nile Delta, and a large harem, including the first two great royal wives.
The origins of Nefertari and Isetnofret are unknown but that has not prevented the wildest of speculation about them.
Everything suggests that Nefertari was Ramses II’s favorite wife. Her beauty is attested to in the statues and paintings in her tomb in the Valley of the Queens.
However, it is uncertain what she actually looked like, since some images raise doubts about who is depicted.
Tumblr media
For example, in Karnak, a small statue of Nefetari stands at the foot of a colossus representing Ramses II, her husband.
The colossus was later usurped by Pharaoh Pinedjem I, who had his name inscribed on it, and the features of both figures may have been modified.
Was only the name changed? Is that beautiful face still Nefertari’s? Egyptologists believe so.
Nefertari took part in official events alongside Ramses.
She was shown celebrating his coronation, in festivities of the god Min, and in Nebunenef’s enthronement as High Priest of Amun.
Her diplomacy culminated in a peace treaty between Ramses and the Hittites several years after the Battle of Kadesh (1274 B.C.) had resulted in a stalemate between the two powers.
Ramses II showed a clear predilection for Nefertari, devotion worthy of a great love story.
When he built the great temple of Abu Simbel, he made sure that Nefertari, then deceased, was on the facade, next to Tuya, his mother.
Tumblr media
In this temple, Nefertari is transformed into Sopdet, the star Sirius, whose appearance presaged the Nile’s annual flooding.
Farther north, another smaller temple dug into rock is dedicated to Nefertari herself.
There, she is identified with the goddess Hathor. Carved into its facade is a tribute:
“Nefertari, she for whom the sun shines.”
Was Isetnofret the forgotten one? So it seems.
Until Nefertari died, around year 26 of Ramses II’s reign, Isetnofret’s likeness did not appear in the many temples the king built in Nubia, nor in those in Karnak and Luxor, where Nefertari is often portrayed.
Isetnofret was finally represented in some temples for her connection with her children.
Nefertari’s image may be seen in more places, but it was Isetnofret who bore her husband the two children closest to his heart.
Tumblr media
Sons and daughters
Ramses II had a hundred or so sons and daughters with the wives in his harem.
Of his recognized children, some would play important roles, but only those born to Nefertari and Isetnofret appear on his monuments.
In the Nubian temple of Beit el Wali, a young Ramses, then co-regent with his father, Seti I, is shown suppressing a Nubian uprising.
The pharaoh’s royal chariot is flanked by two figures identified as Amenherkhepshef, his eldest child with Nefertari, and Khaemwaset, Isetnofret’s son.
Of all Ramses II’s sons, Khaemwaset is believed to have been his favorite.
Instead of taking up arms against his elder brother (also named Ramses), Khaemwaset became Grand Master of the Artisans of Ptah, a title in Memphite doctrine equivalent to High Priest of Amun in Thebes.
He also restored a number of pyramids in his father’s name. His work is still evident on the pyramid of Unas, from the 5th dynasty.
Tumblr media
Khaemwaset also planned and directed the work of the “minor galleries,” the Serapeum at Saqqara, the collective tomb of the Apis, sacred oxen of Memphis.
Auguste Mariette’s 1850 excavation of the Serapeum revealed the mummy of a man named Khaemwaset, wearing a golden mask with several ushabtis.
It proved uncertain that it was the mummy of Ramses II’s son, and the location of Khaemwaset’s tomb remains unconfirmed. Much evidence suggests that it is in the necropolis of Saqqara.
The daughters of Ramses II’s great royal wives also held key positions in his court.
In fact, many became great royal wives themselves after marrying their own father.
It had become customary for 18th-dynasty pharaohs to marry their daughters.
While his great royal wife Tiye was alive, Amenhotep III married their daughter Sitamun.
Later, Akhenaten married at least two of the daughters he had with Queen Nefertiti.
No one knows if these marriages were consummated or purely ceremonial.
Tumblr media
Ramses II appointed several daughters / great royal wives after the deaths of Nefertari and Isetnofret.
Bintanah (Isetnofret’s firstborn) was followed by Merytamon and Nebettawy (daughters of Nefertari) and Henutmire.
In addition to these daughters, other princesses outside the family also bore the title of Great Royal Wife, such as Maathorneferure, daughter of the Hittite king, and another Hittite princess whose name is unknown.
If Khaemwaset was Ramses II’s favorite son, everything points to Bintanath having been his preferred daughter.
She was given the titles of not only Great Royal Wife but also Lady of the Two Lands and Sovereign of Upper and Lower Egypt.
Bintanath occupies a privileged place on the facade of the temple of Abu Simbel. She and her sister Nebettawy appear on either side of the colossus.
Some historians believe Nebettawy’s mother was Isetnofret, but others consider her Nefertari’s daughter.
Fractured legacy
Tumblr media
Ramses had no problems siring heirs with his many wives during his long life, but these sons would be forced to be patient; their father held tightly to his throne for almost 70 years.
Ramses had placed his children liberally throughout Egypt’s bureaucracies, corporations, priesthood, and military to foster loyalty he did not naturally inspire.
He was an outsider, a northerner hailing from the Nile Delta, disconnected from the wealthy elites in southern Thebes.
Ramses’ source of strength rested on ties to, not the moneyed or religious classes, but the military. Placing his sons in powerful positions across Egypt helped strengthen Ramses’ hold in these areas.
By the time Ramses II died in 1213 B.C., he was around 90 years old and had outlived many of these sons.
Amenherkhepshef, Ramses’ oldest son and crown prince, died when he was 25 years old.
Khaemwaset also did not outlive his great father and died in his mid-50s around 1215 B.C.
It would be a child of Isetnofret, her son Merneptah, who was 13th in line, who succeeded Ramses.
Merneptah was around 60 years old, well past middle age, when he became pharaoh and donned Egypt’s double crown.
After decades of waiting in the wings to take power, Merneptah might have expected a stable reign, like his father’s, but his hopes were in vain.
During his 10-year reign, his troops were able to defend Egypt successfully from a series of attacks from enemies in the east and west.
But the seeds sown by Ramses II would lead to chaos after Merneptah’s death.
Rivals for the throne, some of whom may have been sons of Ramses II, pushed Egypt into a period of decline and civil war.
By around 1189 B.C., the 19th dynasty would come to an end.

NCT's Jaehyun on dialling up the ‘sexy lonely’ vibe in new single “Forever Only”
With his new song “Forever Only”, Jaehyun is ready to introduce two things: himself as a solo artist, and a new genre of music he has dubbed “sexy lonely”.
The Korean singer-songwriter just released his debut single as part of NCT LAB, a home where members of K-Pop’s enterprising, ever-expanding NCT can share the facets of their musical identity. Though this is his first official solo release, Jaehyun made his debut as part of NCT U, the 23-strong collective’s revolving unit, in early 2017 before finding his fixed home in the colossus’ Seoul-based subgroup NCT 127. In the 7 years since he was introduced, the softly-spoken, often-introspective vocalist has also lent his talents to acting, radio hosting and television MC-ing.
With its origins from record label SM Entertainment rooted in planting K-Pop all across the world, transcending cultures, language and physical location is weaved into the fabric of NCT. It makes up the DNA of not only its members, who hail from across Asia and North America (Jaehyun, though born and raised in Korea, also spent five years of his childhood in the States), but the lore the group is formed around. In their fictional universe, which appears in visual themes throughout their discography, the members exist in a sort of fantasy dimension where the only way they can reach each other is in an endless search through dreams. It offers us a symbol of the eternal pursuit of a life free from solitude, and the very human impulse to chase connection despite the environments around us.
These are themes that exist in Jaehyun’s partially self-penned lyrics for “Forever Only”, though they’re broadly less fantastical. They speak plainly of the gentle torture in seeking comfort from another’s presence, even when ties feel like they’re loosening – hence “sexy lonely”. He croons over a guitar-laced, vibey R&B melody which holds the kind of early-2000’s boyband key changes the earthy tones of his voice call for. Over video call from Seoul, Jaehyun speaks to GQ about some of his own personal firsts on the eve of his debut single.
First thing you do when it comes to composing lyrics…
Well, usually I think of the theme, then melody and then lyrics, but this time I thought of the loneliness in the song first. I thought of the image first this time, and it becomes quite easy to write the lyrics once you have that image in your head. For this song, [writing] was quite fast because I didn't have that much time. I’m just so excited to release a song filled up with my own voice and emotions. I really want [listeners] to feel closer and get to know more about the true side of myself through music.
First CD you ever bought…
I think it was the album from Alicia Keys, the one that has "If I Ain’t Got You" (The Diary of Alicia Keys, 2003). It’s because my dad used to recommend me those songs when I was really young. That song was the background music of my SNS (Korean abbreviation for social media) when I was really young. We called it minihompy (Cyworld) in Korea.
First time you were really nervous in your career…
I think I’m always nervous when it comes to starting something. For my first debut I was really nervous, my first acting [job] I was really nervous. Right now, showing my first solo song, I got kind of nervous. I really wanted to be good. I used to get really nervous when I was in front of a camera, but I’ve gotten much better now because I can do this kind of free talking in front of a camera. A long time ago, I used to be really nervous even, just, you know, talking about myself or doing an interview.
First time you ever felt like you were proud of yourself?
The first time I got rid of the two training wheels on my bicycle. I was really proud of myself. I remember it really clearly. It was on a hill, in that moment, on grass. I didn't believe that I got rid of the two wheels at that time, but when I looked back I realised that I didn’t have them anymore. I was really proud of myself. I made it!
First person you showed your new music to…
This time it was [fellow NCT member] Johnny, because we were on a schedule together. We were talking about the new song, it was before the mixing part, right after recording. He said that it was kind of sexy, but he also thought of the lonely feeling that's inside. There were [no nerves], it was just like “you want to hear it?” and he was like “of course!”
First impression of your fellow NCT members…
There are a lot of people! [laughs] I just mentioned Johnny, and his first impression was “oh, he's tall!”. He's tall and he kind of had a calm vibe. There was a group of older members and younger group members while we were training, and I used to be the youngest of the oldest group. The hyung members, the older members, used to treat me as the youngest kid in the group. When we play around or hang around these days, I always have that feeling from training. It still feels like the time, you know. I feel like that age when I’m around the members.
First career aspiration…
My first career aspiration... I wanted to be good at everything. But there was a time when I had to write about my dream job at school, and the last thing I wrote before singing or before acting was was a theme park designer. I was really curious about how the things in the parks move, like the roller coasters or the, you know, swings and Viking ships and all the stuff. I was really curious about how it works.
Jaehyun's new single “Forever Only” is out now.

"Are you on an evening stroll? [Not a bad] idea. Mind if I join?"
"Still [awake]? [How odd.] Though, the same goes for me." (NOTE: Correct me if I'm wrong, but another interpretation would be for Yusuke to say something like "Though, I'm not one to talk.")

"Is this the Colossus? It's a unique experience to overlook the land from the sky."
"There's no traffic expenses to worry about in this world... [Not bad]."

"He is another me!"
"An opening!"
"Slice it!"
"Cut it to pieces!"
"Perfect. Now, on to the next victory."

Lorepost: Chapter Ten, “Veritas”
By popular reader request, TTYE lore posts are companion pieces for each chapter of the story breaking down all of the Legend of Zelda lore and references made in each chapter, for readers looking to learn more about LoZ or just refresh their knowledge. This chapter contains explanations for: Farosh the Dragon, Rare Yu-Gi-Oh! Lore, and A METRIC FUCKTON OF SPOILERS.
This entry is very spoilery! Since a few people requested it, I’m going in-depth on the Yuugi-tachi’s hallucinations in the jungle, and often these will be things that the gang themselves don’t manage to figure out - tons of foreshadowing, references to other timelines, etc. etc. No direct spoilers for future TTYE chapters, just hints.
I’ll put the non-spoiler ones outside of the “read more” tag, and the spoilers under the tag.
Tumblr media
In Another Few Hours, The Sun Will Rise
Surprise, it’s Yu-Gi-Oh Lore! This is a really stupid scene from the 4Kids dub that has achieved eternal memedom. I had to put it in because I have no self-restraint.
Tumblr media
Farosh
Farosh is one of three dragons that appear in Breath of the Wild. I’m actually not sure if this is confirmed in canon or not, but many fans believe that the dragons - Dinraal, Farosh, and Naydra - are guardian spirits corresponding to the three Golden Goddesses who created Hyrule, Din, Farore and Nayru.
Despite them arguing all the time, Eri does see Kaiba as a friend, so she takes the opportunity to show him something she knows he’ll like - a dragon. (Maybe she feels guilty about the fact that she deliberately annoys him all the time. Or not.)
SPOILERS AHEAD, YE BE WARNED.

The Footsteps Following Honda: The Skull Kid
Kudos to all of you who guessed Skull Kid! Honda is the only one who can hear these footsteps. Skull Kid is a mysterious imp present in several Zelda games - it’s implied in Ocarina of Time that children who wander into the Lost Woods and lose their way will eventually become Skull Kids. One Skull Kid in particular is a central character in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, who causes havoc when he gets hold of an ancient and powerful mask and tries to bring the Moon down with his newfound powers. Which brings us to….
Tumblr media
The Moon Is Falling: or Why Honda Can’t Sleep
“Couldn’t sleep at all,” Honda muttered. “The moon was too fucking bright.”
Honda isn’t quite getting the whole package here - terrifying face and all - but the moon does seem rather too large, too close, and too bright. Another theme of Majora’s Mask is insomnia: many characters in the game cannot or will not sleep due to the impending threat of the falling moon, and Link himself must repeat the same three days over and over without sleep as he frantically tries to save the land of Termina from its doom.
Tumblr media
The Haunted Wasteland: Kaiba Dreams of a Desert
Kaiba dreamed of Egypt.
He followed a bobbing lantern through a desert storm. Sand drove relentlessly into his eyes, his mouth, his nose, between the crevices of his armour - it was the only thing ahead of him and the only thing behind him. The lantern was the only other thing in the world. He had to keep moving, keep dragging one foot after another; his boots sank further into the ground with every step-
Kaiba is mistaken. He’s not in Egypt - he’s in the Haunted Wasteland, a massive desert that Link must cross in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to reach the Desert Colossus. The only way to safely cross the Haunted Wasteland, with its constant sandstorms and dangerous quicksand, is by obtaining a magical artifact called The Lens of Truth. This lens allows you to see a ghost with a lantern that guides you along the only possible path.

Saria: Anzu dreams of a parting
Just as Yuugi finally started to drift off, Anzu let out a little gasp beside him.
“Anzu?” he whispered. Anzu rolled over to face him. Her eyes were wide and her cheeks were streaked with tears.
“What’s wrong?” Yuugi reached for Anzu, but she met him halfway, grasping both of his hands desperately in hers.
“Yuugi,” Anzu sniffled. “We’ll…we’ll be friends forever…won’t we?”
Anzu is dreaming of Saria, Link’s best friend in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Link and Saria grow up together in the Kokiri Forest and love each other dearly. When Link is called to adventure and has to leave the Kokiri Forest, he and Saria have to say goodbye. This scene is Anzu’s dream and it’s Saria that she hears laughing in the woods. The dream affects her particularly because she and Yuugi are childhood friends and the feelings resonate strongly with her.
Link and Saria’s parting is even sadder than it seems: because Saria is a Kokiri, she will never grow up. Link finds out that he is not a Kokiri and thus he grows up and surpasses her in age. Then Saria discovers that she is the Sage of Forest and has to leave for good to be the Guardian of the Forest Temple.

Why does Eri think the jungle smells nice?
For this chapter I wanted the hallucinations to cover a lot of sensory ground: seeing, hearing, and even smelling. I chose to give Eri olfactory hallucinations partly because they would be subtle enough that she wouldn’t be able to put everything together immediately.
Eri sniffed the air. “Hey, it smells really nice here.”
“Uhhh…” Jounouchi took an experimental sniff, then wrinkled his nose. The air smelled, all right, but it was a pungent mixture of odours - earth, animal musk, rotting vegetation, the heady perfume of jungle flowers - that bordered on oppressive.
Yuugi looked around, bemused. “You like this smell?”
“Don’t you?” Eri inhaled deeply. “It’s so light and fresh and flowery.” Suddenly, she turned to face Kaiba, folding her arms. “What did you say? You have a problem with me breathing in air now?”
Here, Eri is smelling the Forest Haven from Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Eri sniffed the air. “I don’t know what you’re all complaining about. You can smell the sea from here. It’s nice.”
Jounouchi turned around to look at her, eyes boggling. “No, dumbass, you can’t smell the sea. It’s way too far.” He reached out and pinched Eri’s nose between his fingers. “Something wrong with this? Hey, Anzu, do a diagnostic on Eri.”
“No!” Eri protested, scrambling out of Jounouchi’s grasp. “Leave my nose alone!”
And in this instance she’s smelling Outset Island. The reasons for this will become apparent next chapter :)

Little Mermaid AU -
Marcy is the crown princess to King Leviathan, but she’s taken with humans and their technology, especially these two girls she admires from afar, Anne and Sasha. Wanting to be human herself, she seeks out an ancient sea serpent known only by the title Dark as the Night, or The Night. The Night turns out to be a shapeshifter, turning into a twisted form of whoever seeks them out, thus taking on a form they dub Darcy. Darcy agrees to turn Marcy human, but only if she gives up her voice, and she has three days to get one of her two loves to kiss her. Marcy asks what would happen should she fail, and Darcy merely laughs and says some questions are better left unanswered. Marcy agrees, and falls head over heels for Sasha and Anne even more, settling into a mediator role between the two eager, stubborn girls. In the end, Marcy fails to get either to kiss her, and while the three are hanging out, The Night’s power steals away Marcy in front of her human loves and pulls her into the deep sea. Anne and Sasha give chase of course, the two manning a ship, as Marcy is transformed back into her mermaid self. She finds her father, Andrias, negotiating with The Night, trying to convince it not to steal away his daughter as it’s next vessel. It agrees, but only on the term that it takes him as it’s next vessel instead. With the power of the trident, The Night rises out of the ocean as a giant black kraken with countless piercing orange eyes. With her newly regained voice and the helpful arrival of Anne and Sasha, she implores them to help her in bringing The Night down. It ends happily, with King Andrias allowing Marcy to come and go in mermaid and human form, and she relishes the time she spends with her girlfriends. They’re surprised to hear how chatty she is with a voice, but find it endearing and love her all the more for it.
It just fits so well, I couldn’t not
Cody Lyoko AU -
Sasha, Anne and Marcy find a super computer in a run-down factory and inadvertently wind up stuck inside the digital world of Amphibia housed within, trapped with a dark AI, The Core. Years later, Ivy, Sprig and Maddie stumble across the factory while attending a private school despite their meager upbringings and open the world of Amphibia back up, exposing the three girls who went missing years ago. Sprig, Ivy and Maddie resolve go help Anne, Sasha and Marcy get out of Amphibia and deal with The Core once and for all. Meanwhile, Maddie’s sisters get jealous of all the time she’s dedicating to her friends and school, and Polly’s more than just a little suspicious of what Sprig’s been doing in his free time.
When a tower is activated, one of the school trio turns into their frog form; it’s their best signal of when The Core is active in their world. However, it also leads to lots of hijinks in trying to hide their transformations. Maddie fills the role of Yumi in the group, Ivy is like a more badass Aelita-Yumi fusion and Sprig is the Odd of the group. Sasha would be Ulrich’s stand-in, Anne would be some combination of Odd and Aelita despite aspects of those roles being fulfilled, and Marcy would act as the Jeremy of the group while also being comedic. In seasons, the girls would be recovered from the digital world by the end of season one, though they’d be tied to the supercomputer, necessitating keeping it online otherwise they’d die. Season two would reveal the mysterious previous principal, Andrias Leviathan, and his ties to the machine and Amphibia, and Polly would join the team as William’s stand-in while Marcy would fall under the influence of The Core, finally giving it a voice with which to speak; as Darcy. Season three would see The Core spread and try it’s hand at conquering the world to do with as it pleases, but it would be thwarted at every turn by the team. Darcy would be taken out by Sasha, Polly and Ivy, while Sprig, Maddie and Anne would defeat The Core’s colossus. Five years would’ve passed since the girls disappeared; they’re still somewhat known about, but because they didn’t age in Amphibia, people can’t really believe it’s them. Anne’s parents are just glad to have her back in one piece, but Sasha and Marcy’s parents aren’t so happy about it all and the two find themselves crashing with different staff members; Sasha with the eccentric PE teacher Grime and Marcy with the level-headed principal Olivia. The three do return to school, though, Olivia having received a mysterious letter from one A. Leviathan shortly after their disappearance predicting their eventual return and detailing the outline of where they were stuck. Olivia, as it turns out, has some experience with The Core; Andrias’ father Aldrich created the program and was on the run from the government when they shut the project down. Andrias managed to get through his childhood bouncing between foster families and an orphanage and became generally successful, however he decided to restart the supercomputer to try and solve his missing father’s disappearance. He instead found that his father had uploaded himself into Amphibia and The Core had merged with and overtaken his code, corrupting him and giving The Core a taste of the real world. Olivia and Yunan got involved as new hires for the school, and Yunan got sucked into Amphibia while Olivia and Andrias worked to save her. Andrias ended up sacrificing himself to break her free of The Core’s hold, disappearing into the digital sea, never to be seen again. So, Olivia and Yunan are in on the secret and help the kids get to Amphibia when strange happenings begin to occur, though they initially appear suspicious.
Andrias met and befriended Barrel and Leif after becoming an orphan, the three finding their way back to each other as they moved between various homes and lodgings. They had a falling out in high school when Andrias was getting more and more into his research and obsession with recreating his father’s brilliant programming, and so drifted apart. However, Leif is Sprig and Polly’s mom and Barrel is Grime’s step-brother, so they’re all connected again anyway.
I definitely can see large elements of this changing if/when I expand upon this AU, but for now this is the best I got. Anyways, if any of you haven’t watched Code Lyoko, ignore the giant foreheads and give it a try! It’s a really fun series!!
Dojo AU -
When Sasha and Anne find themselves at dead ends of their careers, they decide to open up and run a kendo dojo in their spare time. Not a lot of ideas, but every first class they’d spar with their very real swords and impress the class before going on to point out how dangerous it is and noting Sasha’s scar to prove it.

Sword Art Online Progressive -Scherzo of Deep Night- Review
So in a move absolutely everyone saw coming, I manipulated my work schedule to go see the new Sword Art Online movie opening night, and I thought I would share some of my thoughts on it here. As an obligatory notice I will go in-depth on the movie here and touch on the novel it's based on, so spoilers abound. I'll put a little non-spoiler review here though just to be nice.
SPOILER-FREE REVIEW
Overall, this film is a more solid outing than it's predecessor. Instead of feeling like two different stories patched together, it stands as one cohesive work. Special recognition goes to the score and voice acting, while the animation leaves a little to be desired, especially in the climactic final battle.
PLOT
The biggest issue I had with the first movie, Aria, is that it feels like two separate plots kind of haphazardly put together, which is largely due to the fact that half of it is original content. Scherzo doesn't have this issue, as it stays much closer to it's source work. The biggest changes lie in the complete erasure of the Elf War campaign (for understandable reasons), and Nezuha being swapped for Mito in the final battle (which I knew was going to happen the first time she appeared in promotional artwork). Overall, the story hits the same beats - Kirito and Asuna catch wind of a plot orchestrated by the proto-Laughing Coffin to get the Aincrad Liberation Squad to attempt the floor five boss and get a rare item that would disrupt the power balance, and decide to put together a crack team of trusted allies to beat them to it. The story itself is solid, and it's further bolstered by some sublime fight scenes. A major weakness, though, is several mentions of events that have not been depicted in the anime in any form that are treated like given knowledge, and with the next project in the SAO portfolio being an original story, it seems unlikely any of these things will be shown in the near future.
ANIMATION
This seems like it would be a given for a high-budget movie in one of the biggest anime franchises of the 2010's, but I still feel the need to address it. Given some slight reshuffling of staff for these movies, I've noticed a major, glaring weakness in the animation, and it's that the faces are ridiculously awkward compared to earlier entries. I know part of this is probably owed to the decision to make the characters visibly younger, but a lot of shots are just off, like the animators didn't have a good reference sheet or just weren't used to drawing these characters this way. And dear God, the CG model on the final boss looks like it was ripped out of a fucking PS2 game. Even the boss monsters in the original Aincrad arc at least kind of fit the visual style of the anime. I visibly cringed at the first shot of it, and a couple people in the theatre made comments about it too.
SCORE
This is the easiest part for me- the music! It's fucking awesome. Yuki Kajiura has slowly been incorporating more electronics into her work, and it's most prominent on Fuscus the Vacant Colossus, my favorite track on the album. It's a nine-minute banger.
VOICE OVER
I can't comment on the dub (yet), but the Japanese voice work is great as usual.
DIFFERENCES FROM THE SOURCE
Yes, I'm doing this. I've read this book about eight times since it came out and I'd like to point out the changes made, but I'm only gonna list off the major ones because I don't feel like doing everything.
Flour foor boss fight, Viscount Yofilis was absent entirely
Kirito and Asuna's duel was cut
Changes to the dungeon sequence
Mild changes to the DKB/ALS party scheme
Mito/Asuna duel is original to the movie, as is her inclusion in the boss fight
Kirito alone encounters PoH at the end
Anyway, that's my opinion. Overall, if you enjoyed Aria, you'll probably like this too. However, unless you're super into the series, you can probably stand to wait for it to hit streaming services.
