Tawny Owl
The series A Certain Movement is a meditation on the natural world and our place within it, focusing on subtle and intricate natural processes occurring all around us, and the ways in which these processes are manifested in the physical landscape. The movements of animals follow rhythms and patterns: seasonal migration, reproduction, nesting, feeding. These cyclical processes have a significance that is imprinted on to the world like a wordless text.

Ingenuity Innovation on Inle Lake, Myanmar
The fishers on Myanmar’s Inle Lake live in a symbiotic, synergistic and sustainable coexistence with nature. They fish individually with basket traps, in pairs with line nets, and spear-fish in small teams. They barbecue their catch over open fires on their wooden boats. Sustainable fishing ensures their community’s livelihood. So they selflessly balance their catch size with the highly variable water levels, caused by heavy monsoons, wet summers and dry winters.

"Andromeda, Unexpected" [photo credit: Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner and Yann Sainty]
The winners of the Royal Observatory Greenwich Annual Astrophotography Competition were announced in Sept 2023.
This year's overall top spot came from the Galaxies category—"Andromeda, Unexpected", titled for the large, blue plasma arc pictured next to our nearest galactic neighbor. The plasma streak is actually a new discovery and is now being studied by scientists as perhaps one of the largest phenomenon of its type anywhere in the known universe.
Winners in other categories include:

Rickmas 2023: Day 12. Giver of Gifts | Steven/Reader
Tumblr media
AN: I thought twice about writing for Steven as he was a real person but I read that the real Steven said the character was nothing like him, so this is entirely based on the fictional character played by Alan and is nothing to do with the real Steven Spurrier or his real wife at all.
Read now on Ao3 or below the cut:
Being married to a world-renowned wine connoisseur wasn’t always as fun as it sounded. Of course, you loved being married to Steven, but as far as his status in the wine industry went, there were some downsides. Other people, mainly.
Some people - and these were the types to always order the cheapest white on the menu at any restaurant they went to - couldn’t fathom how Steven made a living out of his passion for wine. “I wish I could get paid for drinking wine!” they’d laugh, as if they were the first to make that joke. “Do you get free wine?” Yes, you’d say, sometimes he brought home a bottle or two of his favourites from whatever wine competition he’d been off judging. “What’s the difference between a £5 bottle and a £500 bottle?” Ask him, not me, and be prepared to listen to the answer for a long time.
And Christmas… well, your family and friends had their hearts in the right places. But when you sat down to open the presents under your tree on Christmas Day, you did sometimes wish for a bit more variety than endless bottles of wine as gifts - especially as the wines were usually generic supermarket-shelf bottles.
They were usually nice wines, and before meeting Steven you’d have loved to be given a year’s supply of free wine every Christmas. You liked Moët, and to the average person £50 was a lot for a bottle of wine. And at least Steven let you drink it - the higher the price of a bottle he brought home, the less likely it was he’d ever actually open it. His wine cellar was like a dragon’s cave, rows and rows of unopened fancy wines that were made to be drunk but he’d never dream of opening them because they were so fancy.
But there was more to Steven than just wine. And there was more to you than the wife of a man who loves wine. But whenever anyone thought of the Spurriers, they thought of wine, and so that was what you got.
And you couldn’t complain really - not since you’d actually bought him wine too. But you’d gone all out on this one. You were fortunate enough to earn a healthy amount of money in your own career, so although it stretched the budget a bit, it didn’t break the bank for you to buy him a £4,500 bottle of JS Terrantez.
Steven opened your present last, and his eyes lit up when he pulled the 200-year-old bottle from the bag you’d presented it in.
“[Y/n]!” he exclaimed with a gasp, turning over the bottle in his hand carefully, as if worried it might explode. “What on earth has gotten into you? You can’t give me this, it’s too much!”
“Don’t be silly, Steve,” you replied, nudging him. “I know how irritated you get at how many Barefoots and Echo Falls we get every year. I thought it was about time someone got you a good wine.”
“Good? This is the sixth most expensive wine in the world, [Y/n].”
“And it’s not even French, would you believe it?”
Steven rolled his eyes at you. His famous 1976 wine tasting had taken place years before you’d met, but you still liked to tease him about it.
“This is such a thoughtful gift, [Y/n]. Thank you.”
He kissed you on the cheek, and you blushed. He wasn’t the most affectionate man in the world, and you’d come to terms with that a long time ago - it just meant that when he did show affection, it meant all that much more to you.
“Can I open my present now?” you asked, eyeing up the one single gift under the tree that wasn’t in a wine bag.
“Alright, but I wish you’d opened it earlier, it pales in comparison to this.”
Steven carefully set aside the bottle to take down into the cellar later, and retrieved the last present from under the tree for you. You pulled back the wrapping paper to reveal a framed photo of the two of you from your wedding.
“Oh, Steve, I love it!” you exclaimed. You wrapped your arms around him, surprising him, and kissed him on the cheek.
“You do? I know we don’t have a lot of photos of us, so I thought it’d be nice to have something to put on the mantelpiece.”
“You mean other than the photos of you with important wine people?”
“Precisely. You’re far more important than any of them. But I feel bad now, it’s nothing compared to that Terrantez —”
“Well, I think it’s my favourite present this year. I’m going to put it right here on the mantel, and we can look at it while we drink these cheap wines and you tell me all about why they’re so terrible even though they taste fine.”
Steven smiled, your enthusiasm infectious, and he was grateful to have a wife so loving as you, who understood his passion - even if you didn’t quite understand the difference between a Merlot and a Shiraz.

Monthly follower recommendations for the month of August 2023
In another life you still would’ve turned my head (ao3) - natigail
Dan comes across old black and white photos of two queer men messing around, one playing with the other's hair, just like he did in a recent video with Phil. He gets caught up in the emotions that he would have fallen in love with Phil in any universe. He crawls into Phil's lap and tells him exactly that.
lead me into the light (ao3) - lestered (clonetrobed)
Summary: Dan finds out that his suspicions are true: there’s more to Phil than meets the eye... just not at all in the way that he expected.
Mortified (ao3) - orphan_account
Summary: phil can always rely on dan to answer his questions about earth. so when he finds a mysterious object underneath their bed, he goes to dan about it
not like the others (ao3) - lestered (clonetrobed)
Summary: Dan’s new boyfriend is just a bit eccentric, and more than a little secretive. But that doesn’t have to mean he’s hiding something big… right?
 Our House (ao3) - sierraadeux
Enemy is a harsh word. Rival sounds so immature, like Dan’s the star of some teen drama on Netflix. Competition is close, but not quite there. In simple terms, Dan has a distaste for Phil Lester. Otherwise known as AmazingPhil in their line of business, for some reason that’s beyond Dan. What makes him so amazing anyway? There’s a reason the network wanted Daniel Howell and Phil Lester for this specific series, and Dan guesses there’s really only one way to find out that answer. or And they were co-hosts. Oh my god they were co-hosts.
Unpleasant Situations (ao3) - Full_Moon_Lover
Summary: Phil is going to have dinner with his mum’s new boyfriend and his son for the first time. Turns out Dan is his son and they remember each other from a drunk hookup, a month before. They both still think the other is hot but their situation is not ideal at all.

Doria was introducing Kim & Kris to others as her dear close friends by u/AM_Rike
Doria was introducing Kim & Kris to others as her dear close friends Read/Watch this video with a bucket nearby. The massively plastic surgeried up lawyer, Gina Zapanta, who was a sponsor of this gala & who invited Doria, also invited a middling level influencer buddy from Louisiana, Jenn Palpallatoc to this fundraising event. Jenn gives a lengthy and excessively gushing account of the invitation, the gala and the weekend, noting the party was held at Henry Winkler’s house, and it was Doria who introduced Jenn to Doria’s dear, close friends Kris and Kim, which was Jenn’s dream come true. That is how Jenn says Doria was introducing them. The evening later included some Harkle favorites of hanging at the Beverly Hills Hotel/Polo Club and going to In-N-Out (where they‘ve memorized Harry’s animal-style order since he eats there so frequently). It’s excessive fan-girling, but it’s note-worthy that KJ & KK are allowing Doria to play gatekeeper to them and are fine with her introducing them as her dear close friends. For those who haven’t read Bower’s book, Doria spent much of her adult life sitting on her stoop in a house coat (pajamas) smoking weed (which was illegal) all day long. She is Hot Pocket trash along levels you can’t imagine unless you grew up in a trailer park. Doria being a gatekeeper for Ricky & Julien at Sunnyvale seems infinitely more believable. And yet, this happened, according to the fawning Jenn. Maybe Meghan really is spending her days filming competitions with the Kardashian girls to see whose va-jay-jay smells the best, since that is the quality entertainment level we are talking about here. If the proper UK authorities don’t strip the titles after hearing about this, they deserve to have this kind of Kardashian trash mongering grafted into their royal lineage. Does MI-6 even exist? *** Update: when I tried to paste the link to this video, which I literally just watched right before drafting this post, it is now gone. That means Jenn took it down. It seemed innocuous enough as it was Jenn putting on her makeup while recounting her dreamy LA weekend trip. The video was longish and had cutaways to both still photos and video clips along with captions, so Jenn put some time and effort into this project. She also gushed about Bezos & Lauren Sanchez and explained how Fonzy’s daughter had cofounded this charity and how she missed Gina’s birthday the week before, blah, blah, so it was newsy. But she spent most of the time on how Meghan Markle’s lovely, down to earth mom Doria introduced her to her idols so she could get her pics with them. I have to wonder if it was Meg’s people who asked Jenn to remove the video? And if so, why? It’s removed from her main IG page and the IG video page. Did anyone else watch this before it vanished? Any thoughts on why this was made to disappear? It was pretty long and detailed for an IG vid. Here’s some of Jenn’s pics from the night: https://ift.tt/ogJtjzT Gina Z likes to do her vids while doing skin care as well. How could any professional take this woman seriously as a lawyer? https://ift.tt/3trW0L2 post link: https://ift.tt/UFnjkrS author: AM_Rike submitted: August 29, 2023 at 05:08AM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Pumpkin carving reaches new heights during the annual competition, where spacecraft-building engineers mix ingenuity and creativity for some spectacular results. When mechanical engineers accustomed to building one-of-a-kind spacecraft turn that focus to pumpkins, the results can be hauntingly good. The annual Halloween pumpkin-carving contest at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California may be all in good fun, but to the 200 or so participants, it’s also serious business. Power tools are involved. Pumpkins can even be turned into musical instruments during JPL’s annual pumpkin-carving contest.Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Dioramas can incorporate flying-saucer gourds, guitar-strumming pumpkins, and squashes that bear a striking resemblance to celebrities or famous deep space missions. Participants carve them on their breaks – 60 minutes of frantic sawing and drilling that sends vegetable detritus flying on a patio at JPL. (This year, one team had a minute-by-minute spreadsheet to make sure they stayed on schedule.) Carving complete, engineers race into two conference rooms in a nearby building to install the pumpkins into displays of up to 4 feet by 4 feet square. Non-pumpkin materials – motorized parts, lights, often elaborate props, and painted backdrops – can be prepared beforehand. “It’s not really a pumpkin-carving contest in the traditional sense. It’s a pumpkin art installation event with very few rules,” said Peter Waydo, who manages JPL’s spacecraft mechanical engineering section and emcees the carving. He’s been participating since the event began in 2011. “This is something everybody looks forward to every year – it just lets their creative juices flow completely unrestricted from the rules and processes we’re normally bound by.” For the 2023 event, more than two dozen teams produced displays. They ranged from a Barbenheimer-themed “atomic makeover” featuring a mirrored disco-ball pumpkin to a space octopus emerging from a Jupiter-colored pumpkin to greet NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft, and there were references to Taylor Swift, “Dune,” and the agency’s James Webb Space Telescope. All of the creations were on display for fellow engineers, scientists, technicians, and other JPL employees to admire. Of course, it wouldn’t be a competition without winners. A panel of judges named the year’s top six, with three from each of the two sections of engineers that participate. A display re-creating favorite items from JPL’s museum and an interactive Indiana Jones-themed display both won first. Second went to the Deep Squash Network – a spoof on NASA’s Deep Space Network, which enables spacecraft to communicate with Earth – and to a creation involving a descendent of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter on the fictional planet Arrakis. The two third-place winners were an eyeball-pumpkin that resembled Las Vegas’ Sphere and the Barbenheimer display. The event comes on a special day for the lab, which, founded Oct. 31, 1936, was celebrating its 87th birthday. Additional photos from the pumpkin competition are available on JPL’s website; video is available on JPL’s Vimeo account. Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages JPL for NASA. Random Secrets [True or False]
Created by joybucket
The last photo I posted on Instagram was definitely not my best, but I posted it anyway. I wish I were better at drawing. ✍️ I often experience brain fog, and I hate it. I don't trust the police in my town. There's something I've been meaning to do that I've been putting off, and I'm not even exactly sure why I've been putting it off. I've stayed inside most of this summer, and I hope to enjoy the outdoors more before this summer ends. ☀️ I enjoy learning new things. I have flashbacks of traumatic memories every single day. I wish I had neater handwriting. I wish I were a better singer. 🎤 I wish I were a better dancer. 💃 I'm very competitive. Brain fog is the mental health issue that I struggle with the most, I think. I've seen a ton of different doctors, and most of them I wasn't happy with. I wear glasses every day. 🤓 I have a lot of secrets. I've sent in a postcard to PostSecret. I've thought about making and sending a postcard to PostSecret, but I've never done it. I hardly ever chew gum. I chew gum often. I have an invisible illness. I really enjoy designing graphics online using Canva. I wish I could be a professional photographer; I think it would be a lot of fun. 📸 Nobody really knows who I am. I like to sit on carpeted floors. I can type fast, and I really enjoy typing, too. It's been at least a year since I've even traveled outside of my town. I have cousins I haven't seen in years. I don't understand why some people hate country music, because I enjoy it. I'm insecure about the size of my nose. 👃 I've almost died multiple times. I've caught myself snoring. 😴 I want people to know that it's okay to ask me about my chronic illness. I use a wheelchair, and I wish the world were more accessible for wheelchair users. ♿️ I've been a victim of discrimination. I have a secret I will never tell anyone. I wish I had someone I could tell my secrets to. I'm in the middle of reading a book right now that's really good. 📖 I've always liked cheetah print. I wish I could run faster. I wish I had more good hair days, because it doesn't seem like they happen very often anymore. I often don't leave my home for days. I use my laptop more than my phone. 💻 I use my phone more than my laptop. 📱 I've accidentally spelled my own name wrong. I hate my middle name. I hate my first name. I hate my last name. People often spell my name wrong. People often pronounce my name wrong. I've had a friend with the same name as me. I wish I knew what I was doing. My imagination has gotten me through some very tough times! I'm an adult, and I still like unicorns. 🦄 I've gone trick-or-treating as an adult. 🎃 I want to give my kids unisex names. I've never met anyone in real life who identified as transgender. I've been to a Gay Pride event. 🏳️‍🌈 To me, the rainbow is still a reminder of God's promise to never flood the earth again. 🌈 I've been spending a lot of time on Instagram lately. I've considered going back to college and majoring in something else. I feel I fit the "dumb blonde" stereotype pretty well. I wish I wasn't so ditzy. I wish I wasn't so clumsy. Fall is definitely my favorite season. 🍁 I think it would make more sense if the new year started at the beginning of summer instead of the middle of winter. Chalk Streams
Crystal clear chalk streams intertwine and weave throughout the counties of Dorset and Hampshire in southern England. There are just over 200 chalk streams globally, 85% of which are found in southern England. They are a unique ecosystem supporting a high biodiversity of wild creatures. Light reflected from the surface of the nearby sea is overlaid on to these river landscapes, creating a sparkling ingress. The transposed light symbolises rising sea levels as they insidiously impose themselves on these pristine landscapes.

Warm Autumn Hues on Kodiak Island
As summer turns to fall in Alaska, days of abundant sunlight give way to rapidly encroaching darkness. Bears plump up for hibernation, while tundra plants harden themselves for the long, cold winter. Humans delight in all of this splendor, much of it from afar: watching brown bears nab salmon out of the river and grow into rotund beasts, and—if the clouds clear—catching a glimpse from space of autumn reds and golds.
The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image of fall colors blanketing Kodiak Island, the second-largest island in the United States and home of Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, on October 3, 2023. The island’s terrain ranges from rugged coastline to spruce forest to snowy peaks. However, the southwestern part of Kodiak along the Shelikof Strait, shown here, is colder and drier than the maritime eastern side, and a tundra ecosystem predominates.
The vegetation on this part of Kodiak Island includes sedges, mosses, heaths, and grasses. Trees are generally absent, save for the occasional Sitka spruce. Moist peatlands fill in the bottoms of the valleys.
Tumblr media
Fall colors on the tundra are on display in the photo (above), taken in September 2015 at the north end of Frazer Lake in Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. In the short growing season of this harsh environment, plants spend as much time as possible on growth and reproduction while still allowing enough time to build up frost hardiness. Sunlight levels, snow conditions, and temperature are some of the factors thought to affect when tundra plants lose chlorophyll and reabsorb nutrients each year. However, those winter preparations in tundra ecosystems are not well understood.
Across the Shelikof Strait, bears preparing for hibernation in Katmai National Park (northwest of this image) spent time in the spotlight during the annual Fat Bear Week competition. (In 2023, Chunk and Grazer squared off in the finals.) Not to be outdone, an estimated 3,500 Kodiak brown bears (Ursus arctos middendorffi) roam the mountains, forests, and tundra on the islands of the Kodiak Archipelago. Kodiak brown bears can weigh twice as much as interior brown bears, better known as grizzlies. Females can reach 700 pounds (320 kilograms), and males can top out at 1,400 pounds (640 kilograms).
On Kodiak, the bears have access to a bounty of food sources, foraging among the salmonberry and elderberry patches and fishing in the streams. The Karluk River, for example, boasts one of the most famous sockeye salmon runs in Alaska, with the fish sometimes numbering in the millions. The river also supports a native stock of Chinook salmon and populations of several other salmon and trout species.

Photography: Wildlife Photographer of the Year Winners Show the Beauty — and Precarity — of Nature
— October 11, 2023 | By Rachel Treisman | NPR
Tumblr media
Portfolio Award Winner: The ancient mariner. Pangatalan Island, Palawan, the Philippines. The tri-spine horseshoe crab has survived for more than 100 million years but now faces habitat destruction and overfishing for food and for its blood, used in the development of vaccines. Laurent Ballesta/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
If you're looking for a breath of fresh air, we have just the thing: the newly-crowned winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition.
The London Museum of History, which runs the prestigious contest, revealed the winning images at a ceremony on Tuesday. It said an international panel of expert judges chose the 19 category winners out of 49,957 entries from 95 countries, based on their originality, narrative, technical excellence, and ethical practice.
The images take us underwater, deep into the woods and high above cities. They come from different parts of the world and tell the stories of various species. But they all showcase the diversity — and precarity — of life on Earth.
"Whilst inspiring absolute awe and wonder, this year's winning images present compelling evidence of our impact on nature – both positive and negative," said Doug Gurr, the director of the Natural History Museum. "Global promises must shift to action to turn the tide on nature's decline."
That's especially true of the two grand title winners.
Tumblr media
Animals in their Environment Winner: Life on the edge. Zin Desert, Israel. Two Nubian ibex clashed on a cliffside for about 15 minutes before one surrendered and they parted ways without serious injury. Amit Eshel/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
French marine biologist and underwater photographer Laurent Ballesta was awarded Wildlife Photographer of the Year for his "otherworldly" image of a tri-spine horseshoe crab accompanied by three golden trevallies.
This is actually his second win, which contest organizers say is unprecedented. He took home the grand title in 2021 for his images of mating camouflage groupers in French Polynesia. Both portfolios focused on endangered species in protected waters.
Tri-spine horseshoe crabs have survived for more than 100 million years. Fossil evidence from Lebanon shows they were scuttling through warm waters at the same time dinosaurs roamed the land and skies.
But they are now under threat from habitat destruction and overfishing, with hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs harvested annually to be used both as bait for other species and for scientific research. Their blue blood is used in the development of vaccines — though that could soon start to change.
Ballesta documented the species as they feed, mate and thrive in the protected waters of Pangatalan Island in the Philippines. The Natural History museum said the images took the judges by surprise.
"To see a horseshoe crab so vibrantly alive in its natural habitat, in such a hauntingly beautiful way, was astonishing," said jury chair Kathy Moran. "We are looking at an ancient species, highly endangered, and also critical to human health. This photo is luminescent."
Tumblr media
15-17 Years Winner: Owls' road house. Hof HaSharon, Israel. The photographer snapped this shot of several barn owls in the window of an abandoned building, using long exposure times to capture the light of passing traffic. Carmel Bechler/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
The Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year award went to 17-year-old Carmel Bechler of Israel for his dynamic shot of barn owls in an abandoned roadside building. He used natural light and long exposure times to capture the light from passing traffic.
Bechler said his work aims to show that "the beauty of the natural world is all around us, even in places where we least expect it to be, we just need to open our eyes and our minds."
To the judges, the contrast between the neon lights and nesting owls highlights a growing tension between humans and wildlife.
"It simultaneously screams 'habitat destruction' and 'adaptation,' begging the question: If wildlife can adapt to our environment, why can't we respect theirs?" Moran said.
The other winning shots raise similar questions.
Tumblr media
Natural Artistry Winner: The art of courtship. Noss National Nature Reserve, Shetland, Scotland, UK. Each summer the Isle of Noss hosts more than 22,000 northern gannets, which return to breed on the ledges carved by the elements. This species was hardest hit by the 2022 avian flu outbreak. Rachel Bigsby/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Karine Aigner of the U.S. won the photojournalist story award for her portfolio focused on hunting competitions in Texas, for example. Overhead views of a polluted river in Indonesia and bulldozed land in Mexico serve as stark reminders of the impact humans are having on their own environment.
All of the images will be on display as part of an exhibit at London Natural History Museum that opens Friday. It will tour across the U.K. and to other countries including Australia, Canada, France, New Zealand and Singapore before it closes in late June 2024.
Then it will be nearly time to award a whole new batch of winners. The historic 60th edition of the competition will be accepting submissions starting Monday and until early December.
In the meantime, check out a sampling of this year's winners:
Tumblr media
Invertebrates Behavior Winner: Lights fantastic. Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu, India. The photographer combined 50 19-second exposures to show the firefly flashes produced over 16 minutes in the forests near his hometown. Sriram Murali/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Tumblr media
Plants and Fungi Winner: Last breath of autumn. Mount Olympus, Pieria, Greece. Parasol mushrooms release spores from the gills under their cap. Some will land where there is moisture and food, enabling them to grow networks under the forest floor. Agorastos Papatsanis/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Tumblr media
Mammals Behavior Winner: Whales making waves. Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica. A pod of B1 Antarctic killer whales prepare to 'wave wash' a weddell seal off a piece of sea ice and into the water so they can eat it. The bubbles are thought to be part of the way they communicate with each other to form these waves. Bertie Gregory/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Tumblr media
Birds Behavior Winner: Silence for the snake show. Guiana Space Center, between Kourou and Sinnamary, French Guiana. Trumpeters – named for their loud calls – spend most of their time foraging on the forest floor, eating ripe fruits, insects and the occasional small snake. The boa constrictor could have made a meal out of them. Hadrien Lalagüe/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Tumblr media
Rising Star Portfolio Award: Alpine exposure. Vercors Regional Natural Park, Rhône-Alpes, France. Melcarne skied six hours across a national park and spent a night in a temporary shelter to get early access to ibex territory. He thawed his camera with his breath to take this portrait. Luca Melcarne/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Tumblr media
Underwater Winner: Hippo nursery. Kosi Bay, iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa. A hippopotamus and her two offspring resting in the shallow clear-water lake. Hippos produce one calf every two to three years. Mike Korostelev/Wildlife Photographer of the Year
— Wildlife Photographer of the Year is developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London.

As a kid, yoga brought me healing from the “toxic stress” of an abusive childhood home. As a dancer I had already found tremendous joy in my art but something about the rabid competition in the entertainment world led me to seek solace in yoga, not as a replacement for dance, but as a companion for life as an artist in the 21st-century.  Yoga also accompanied me on many NYC subway rides and it was a land-based version of surfing my beloved oceans, whenever I am too far away from water. I am a water creature and yoga helps me cope with land based behaviors.
Ironically it seems that yoga has now become a competitive space in some social media and live places. LOL the joke will always be on us if we choose to worship disposable culture we will continue to be treated as disposable humans. There is so much more value in honoring timeless eternal values, we ignore our own inherent non-commercial value at our own peril.
As soon as I saw the  “asanas” (yoga poses) from photos in hatha yoga books I knew this ancient body architecture was for me, especially when I found myself too far from the sea. Whenever I’d practice the meditative technique of dropping my mind into my heart space, I’d visit my voice box and I’d discover sadness but still, I was happy for no reason. Eventually I discovered my speaking and singing voice too.
Some people told me that I was being “phony “ if I was just generally a cheerful person. Those types of negative haters would tell me I was just “acting” because I’m an actress  (fyi good acting is not lying ). Now that I’m sort of a grown up it’s easier to spot the negative types even from a distance. These are the people who will immediately criticize the lifestyles of others, even if those lifestyles don’t impact their own lives. They are the people who will immediately put down ideas they don’t understand, instead of asking questions, or opening up a moment of curiosity. Those who drive by something unique like a unique house, built in an unusual style, and they will immediately begin petitioning against it in order to destroy it. I’ve encountered these people often because there are several areas of my life where I don’t conform to norms whether it’s clothing or speech or lifestyle. Gentrification in Venice Beach, Los Angeles brought us into proximity with such ugly haters who actually attempted to take people’s homes away from them in order to suit both the empty-handed bullies and the billionaires who fund the bullying. In some cases, they succeeded but not when people united and stood up to them.
While it’s quite possible to learn how to fend off such rude, loud haters, and refuse to allow them to deter us, they can potentially waste our valuable time and affect our health, both of which are our most valuable resources. The bully’s intention is to throw a wrench into our peace and into our family’s sacred spaces.
That’s why fending off bullies should not be left to individuals alone. This kind of thing is mutating as the virus it always was, now encouraged by craven bestial whistles from public servants who mirror and goad outrageous, psychotic, sociopathic, behavior in places like school board meetings, and other places that are meant as civilized constructive public spaces. Their intentions are corrosive to healthy cultural societies.
We need public service announcements incorporating history lessons, showing the very simple trajectory from the loosed arrow of normalized public malevolence into its ultimate target bullseye destination : authoritarianism, which is abuse.
Abuse of power is the same as any other abuse : child abuse, domestic abuse, sexual abuse, animal abuse, environmental abuse etc … In a democracy with rule of law, all abuse requires intervention.
Doing Nothing is not an option because the law requires protection of the vulnerable among us. These days that group is growing but we can turn this toward our mutual advantage by uniting against the bullies.
During my yoga practice, as a kid, I worked through the sadness in my heart, placed there by abuse until recently, I was able to practice the meditation technique of dropping my mind into my heart space, as taught by my first Thai Buddhist friend and suddenly a new journey began.
As a result of so much chaos in the world I reclaimed my meditation practice and recently I dropped my mind into my heart and a very funny thing happened – I felt so ticklish that I literally burst out giggling then, laughing as in “laugh out loud” until I realized that ticklish feeling is just plain bliss! That same feeling I get when I’m in the ocean! Pure bliss! From within. I was familiar with this feeling, but it never occurred to me to try to call it up consciously. Now it felt like a superpower.
The spiritual practice of meditation, whether it be in yoga - or other disciplines - is a healing practice that re-aligns us to our internal compass and reconnects us to our natural born joy.
It doesn’t matter anymore if anyone thinks of this meditation joy or any other joy – female joy, black joy, multi-cultural joy, lgbtq joy, intellectual joy etc … You know, the joy that always seems to get on the authoritarian abusers’ nerves, is “phony “ or “acting “ (again, the art of a good actor is working from a sense of truth not a bunch of lying).
The lesson I discovered in meditative “bliss” is equivalent to the lesson we must all learn as we grow up. Remaining unperturbed or at least undeterred as result of abuse or criticisms & unreasonable cruel negativity expressed by others.
Unfortunately we live in a time when some of us condone, even encourage the kinds of abusive, even violent behaviors that would previously have caused most communities to unite and fight back together, in spite of political differences.
It’s time to unite.

Planet Ocean: Tides are changing.
Tumblr media
The oceans cover the majority of the earth, but only a small portion of its waters has been explored. Despite humanity’s utter reliance on it, and compared to the breadth and depth of what it gives us, the ocean receives only a fragment of our attention and resources in return.
But tides are changing.
To celebrate the United Nations World Oceans Day 2023 theme, Ocean, theUnited Nations is joining forces with decision makers, scientists, private sector executives, civil society representatives, indigenous communities, celebrities and youth activists and more to put the ocean first.
