Going over the latest feedback for Eat God, I think the whole species-with-no-name bit has to go. The gag about the name of the player characters' species being a secret is fun, but it also makes them hard to talk about, and tends to confuse less attentive players into thinking that the entire species are called God-eaters, rather than just the specific social-club-slash-cult that player characters are drawn from.

Unless anyone has a better suggestion, I think in the next revision the text will adopt the practice of euphemistically referring to the player characters' species as "the Folk" with a capital F; they'll still have a secret name, but the text coyly dancing around actually saying it will be downplayed. I understand this will come as a disappointment to many, but sometimes I've gotta put my technical writer hat on and prioritise clarity over commitment to the bit!

@prokopetz I saw you had asked about public feedback on your play test draft - this is mine!

I sent the latest Eat God play test to my usual TTRPG group and we jumped in with the random character generator and a vague idea of what to do. It was extremely fun, and we cut the session as our violent preteen revolutionary mob rocked up to the castle of the greedy local lord.

The highlights was definitely the openness of the system - brewing game elements felt really easy with the trait system and the players were all really excited whenever they could bring one of their weirder Traits to bear on a situation. It felt very Muppet-y in that they got to apply cartoon rules to a fantasy world, and the genre bend was really fun. Additionally, once we understood the Tests, the play between position and effect was really interesting and let a lot of player creativity come through.

I know this content is likely coming in future updates, but I’d love a little more outlining of how to best use the clock system. I know it’s common to several other popular systems, but our group hadn’t used it before, and it felt a little awkward at first - I wasn’t sure if the thresholds I was setting for the clocks were appropriate or how much I should be setting them versus the players. The motivation for the players also sometimes felt a little thin - the little guys were so weird and funny that the first hour or so was really just riffing on the group dynamic before we kind of artificially pointed the group at something. That’s not a bad thing - it was a really fun and funny hour - I just wonder at what makes these greebly little things undertake any smaller journeys than “go eat god Right Now”.

We loved it and are going to keep playing 1000% - thanks so much for the public play test! Keep your blog updated and I’ll definitely grab the finished version when it comes out :)
