Summary: Lan Wangji feels his heart break. It is my promise.” “You’re too good, Hanguang-jun,” Wei Wuxian sighs. “You’ll make a wonderful father someday.” “I will have learnt from the best,” he nods at Wei Wuxian. The man’s cheeks fill with colour so pretty, Lan Wangji has to turn away entirely in order to breathe again. ——— A storm thunders violently, the forest howls in pain, and children are disappearing into the night. Amongst it all, Lan Wangji encounters a strange, beautiful man. And his five children.

Mojo's comments: Someone is whisking away marginalized children - orphans and street kids - from many towns and villages. Wwx, working in the orphanage where he grew up (after his street years), gets wind of it in time to grab the five remaining kids and run. He stumbles into an inn after staggering his way through a tremendous storm and a haunted forest, right into an unsuspecting lwj's life. The pacing for much of the story feels tranquil and domestic, yet it's really, really NOT, because all kinds of stuff is happening in the background, while lwj falls helplessly in love with wwx AND all five of the children, and realizes how much his life has been missing. He's pretty much instantly committed to their lifelong protection and happiness, although, of course, he can't come right out and SAY it, it would be disrespectful to put wwx in such a position.

It’s such a ridiculously inappropriate thing to say. Lan Zhan’s mouth falls open in shock, and then as if things couldn’t get any more ridiculous, laughter bubbles out from between his parted lips. The man looks surprised, but it’s like Lan Zhan can’t help it. He’s never laughed like this before, not even as a child. But right now he’s doubling over with it, choking on his own silent laughter. His sides ache as he laughs and laughs, and the sheer absurdity of it all doesn’t escape him.

He laughs so hard that tears begin to well in his eyes, and when they spill over he gasps, choking around a sob. And it’s as if the floodgates have been opened. Tears pour down his face, just as uncontrollable as his laughter had been. He sits there on the cold, hard ground, weeping into the arms of a complete stranger.

The receptionist seems to understand Wei Ying so Lan Zhan doesn’t step in. Not until she looks meaningfully between the two of them and croaks, “Per hour or night?”

“No need to be shy, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying nudges him playfully. “I know you can do the whole night, but I won’t be able to. Have some mercy on me.” He blinks up at Lan Zhan with his horrible doe eyes.

Lan Zhan has to grit his teeth and remind himself that Wei Ying is talking about money. Because it sure does sound like something else entirely. To him and the receptionist both. “Regular?” she smirks. When he can’t get a word of a reply out she goes on, “Tell you what, stallion. Special offer. Pay for three, stay for five. If you can last that long.”

“So, so cute,” he repeats. “Have you ever had a pet bunny? Or any other animal?”

“No. Pets were not allowed.”

“Oh, that’s a shame. Is someone in your family allergic?” Wei Ying picks some grass and holds it out for a rabbit to nibble on.

Lan Zhan shakes his head. “No. Pets are considered frivolous.”

“According to who?”

“My family’s rules.” He continues stroking the rabbit, not wanting to see the frown on Wei Ying’s face.

After a moment’s pause, Wei Ying asks, “What does frivolous mean, Lan Zhan?”

Lan Zhan wonders if Wei Ying really doesn’t know the meaning or if he’s being tested. He answers anyway, “Something which does not have any real purpose or value.”

“Then it’s not frivolous, is it?” Wei Ying states, matter of factly. “If something brings you happiness, then how can it be frivolous, Lan Zhan?”

“I—” Lan Zhan begins, but finds he does not have the words to argue. “Mn.” What Wei Ying said rings true; as much as his uncle would disagree, happiness is not frivolous. He certainly wouldn’t consider it such for anyone else, so why does he hold himself to different standards?

Summary:

Wei Ying laughs. “I never really understood why Paris is meant to be the city of love. It’s just a city. There’s like, so many cities in the East that have so much more to offer, right? But now that I’m here, with you…” He smiles prettily, the candlelight sparkling in his eyes. “I think I kind of get it. There’s just, something in the air.”

Against his better judgement, Lan Zhan asks, “What is in the air?”

“Hmm…” Wei Ying thinks. “Maybe love?” His laughter tinkles like a chime.

Maybe.

Seen and not heard by eatmyass (E, 50K, the author's name made me giggle by my god...this fic was so wonderful and incredible and just wwx being the best dad to all the orphans and lwj loving all of them i lose it okay)

总有一天; a place to hide (can't find one near) by yiqie (E, 76K, MIND THE TAGS, the fic starts with a suicide attempt by wwx and walks through his healing journey. made the therapist cry (but still so so so good))

take me back to a time by DizziDreams (T, 140K, time travel fic that was just so much fun and interesting)

Tempo Rubato by Spodumene (E, 108K, I read this in November and I'm still having many many feelings about it. Everything this author writes is incredible)

Life is Like a Stranger by through_shadows_falling (T, 70K, I'm an absolute sucker for wwx growing up in cloud recesses fics and this one was super sweet)

The Simplest Way Forward by harriet_vane (E, 71K, BASICALLY ANY TIME I GET A-YUAN AND HIS DADS IN A FIC SIGN ME UP but this one was just so cute and sweet I love it so much)

grow by cafecliche (T, 14K, one of the most popular fics and for a good reason!!!! post canon wwx gets turned into a child and there are a lot of wwx and sizhui feels and i read this when I have a bad day because it makes me very warm and happy)
