Ok! 1. 3 and 7 for Carewyn~
Tumblr media
1. What's MCs favorite subject and why?
Charms! Not only is the class Carewyn took to most easily from the start (only Charms prodigy Ben Copper is better at it than she is!), but she really likes Flitwick as a teacher. Flitwick was always very kind toward Carewyn, partly because he was her brother Jacob's Head of House back in the day and nurtured a soft spot for Jacob, even with all of the terrible accusations thrown at him after his disappearance. Unlike Snape, who immediately presumed Carewyn would cause trouble like Jacob did, Flitwick decided that Carewyn deserved a bit of extra gentle attention, given how traumatic her brother's disappearance and people's treatment of her for his misbehavior had to have been -- and when Carewyn ended up taking so well to Charms and seemed just as intellectually curious and musically inclined as Jacob, Flitwick had all the more reason to become fond of Carewyn too.
3. Did MC get the permission slip for Hogsmeade from the parents without any problems?
No problems at all! Lane Cromwell has always felt very strongly that her children should have the freedom to go to new places and try new things, since she didn't have that freedom when she was young.
7. Who does your MC hate the most?
Overall? Her grandfather, Charles Cromwell, who in Carewyn's canon is not only the Leader of R, but also the man who emotionally and physically abused her mother as a child, forced Jacob to join R and use the Cruciatus Curse on someone, and tried to trick her into joining too by holding Jacob's safety over her head. He is one of the very few people Carewyn thought fully deserved getting locked up with the dementors of Azkaban and dying alone in that prison.
At Hogwarts? Emily Tyler. Her treatment of her surrogate Big Brother Best Friend Bill was so inexcusable that Carewyn loathes her for the entire rest of her school career, even more so than her old school rival Merula Snyde, who Carewyn actually eventually mends fences with a bit.
At the Ministry? Dolores Umbridge. Carewyn was actually the prosecutor that helped convict Umbridge, and she found it very satisfying to throw the book at her, after everything that horrible woman did during the Second Wizarding War.

(!) Not a ship post
I haven't actually met Emily Tyler, nor Talbott, in the game myself yet but I thought about a scenario where
What if her and some other gryffindors, similar to her, start hanging out in the Raven claw table
Specifically right next to Talbott, which is usually empty or something-I don't know I'm literally on the first chapter in my 3rd year LMAO
These are all assumptions based on what I've seen from other fan artists
Talbott = likes to be alone
Emily = popular mean girl trope (?)

was reinas name ever cleared up after the trip to the portrait vault?
Context here
TW: Slut-shaming, bullying, minor body horror
"Turns out that nearly getting killed by your tormentors was beneficial in proving your innocence."
Long post ahead as usual!
It was cleared a few weeks before the trip and right before the attack that left Reina in a coma. Small change from the previous post: Reina was actually present for this. The absent one was Merula, as she had stolen Reina's Crystal Wand and was trying to break it in an attempt to kill her (as those wands are linked to the owner's Soul).
Rowan and a few others had gotten to work gathering evidence to clear Reina's name. They've been keeping tabs on Emily and Merula by using Ismelda's Doll Magic to spy on them and record their conversations.
Tumblr media
That's when they found out Emily used her connections with Rita Skeeter to get the woman to write a hit piece against Reina, hoping it would ruin her reputation beyond the school and drive her to leave it for good. The woman would stop by in a few days to speak with them directly.
Duncan offered to help as soon as Rowan informed him of what had been going on. Not that he'd admit it, but the current state Reina was in actually worried him. With help from Chiara, they were able to convince Reina to get some fresh air if only for just a moment.
Their eventual encounter with Emily and her squad was a complete coincidence. While Rowan intended to take their findings to the professors, she felt exposing Emily's lies in front of surrounding students would have a better impact. The following took place at the Clocktower Courtyard.
Tumblr media
"If it isn't the school whore. Got bored of the Weasleys already? Scoping out the courtyard for other guys to sleep with?"
While Emily had been the one spreading all the nasty rumors, no one knew about her working with Merula. Given that the Slytherin's reputation is so negative, anyone that associates with her is met with distrust at best and hate at worst. Penny's own reputation took a hit earlier on since she openly sided with Merula after her fallout with Reina.
Tumblr media
"We already know you started all of this, Tyler. Why don't you go ahead and tell everyone about your little collaboration with Snyde? Or would you rather have us do it?"
"I d-don't know what you're talking about! No one in their right mind would ever work with that snake!"
"Then why do you sound so nervous right now?"
Ismelda wasted no time in using one of her dolls to play back an earlier conversation Emily had with Merula, making sure it was loud and clear for everyone around them. With the alliance exposed, eyes were now on Emily.
Tumblr media
Reina found herself starting to gain her energy back, and with it came the drive to finally speak out on everything she had to deal with.
Tumblr media
"Let's get this out of the way. I've said it many times before, but maybe now that you've been exposed, they'll believe me this time around. The trips to the forest were because the source of the Sleepwalking Curse was there. It's so convenient for you that you forgot, considering you were one of the people we rescued from that place. Had I known this is what you'd do, I would've left you to the Acromantulas lurking around for their next meal."
Tumblr media
"You-!"
"I know you started this because of a two-year-old grudge. You lost to me in a duel and then you got rejected by the same Bill Weasley you thought was far too beneath you. I'll never understand being such a bitter, miserable bitch like you."
"Y-yeah?! W-well, explain those trips to the Prefects' Bathroom, then! What could you possibly find there that's related to the vaults?! No one with a functioning brain cell would believe that!"
Duncan provided context for the trips to the Prefects' Bathroom, as well as his connection to Ricardo.
Tumblr media
"They went there to talk to me, you absolute troglodyte! My friends and I investigated the vaults ourselves some years back. They were looking for ways to break this current curse, something you idiots had to go and make far more difficult than it needed to be. I doubt you have enough intelligence to understand that."
He even found himself defending his old best friend after Emily attempted to deflect by bringing up Ricardo and his supposed wrongdoings.
"He's many things, but dangerous and mad certainly aren't one of them. Reckless? Absolutely. Idiotic? Without a doubt. No matter how misguided his attempts may have been, he felt keeping Reina in the dark about the vaults would somehow keep her safe. If you buffoons are going to condemn him, do so for the things he's actually done, not what you think he did just because you didn't like him."
Reina would then explain her reasons for transferring to Hogwarts in the first place. She just wanted to be closer to Ricardo as at that point he still had 2 years of schooling left.
When they last met before he disappeared, Reina attributed the stress and worries he was feeling to his upcoming exams, as he was to take his O.W.L.s that year. Seeing the hostility against him is what prevented her from revealing she was his sister.
"Ricardo is my brother and I'm not ashamed of that. Never was and never will be. Based on everything I went through this year because of you fuckers, I know for a fact that those awful things people say about him aren't true. People will believe anything they hear and just go with it. So go on and say and think whatever you want. I'm not going to stop anytime soon, not when lives are on the line."
It was around this time that it began to click for some of the students that were listening in. Anyone willing to work with Merula immediately couldn't be trusted. Someone like Emily spreading such rumors made sense, especially given her track record of bullying those she saw beneath her. Eyes were on her and she knew it.
Disaster Strikes
Because of the way her powers worked, those around Reina sensed the sincerity and genuine emotions she projected with her words. Reina could sense the hatred against her finally starting to slowly fade, and with it, she felt a large weight being lifted from her shoulders.
In her rage, Emily would pull out her wand in an attempt to fight Reina. At this exact moment, Merula succeeded in breaking Reina's crystal wand.
Tumblr media
It caused her entire body to lose its color, and cracks to appear, making her look like a cracked marble statue.
Tumblr media
Reina fell into a coma at this moment. As far as everyone around them knew, Emily had just attempted to kill Reina in retaliation.
Tumblr media
"What the bloody hell did you do to her, Tyler?!"
"W-what?! I didn't-!"
In a twist, this act is what cemented Reina's innocence in the eyes of most of the student body. While an actual investigation would be underway in regards to Reina's condition, Emily for a time would be under some scrutiny of her own thanks to her "failed murder attempt".
Merula was quite pleased with what she had done. Not only did she believe Reina was going to die for certain, but she also believed she got away with it as she was never caught. She didn't really care much about the strange mark that appeared on her chest after committing the act...
Unknown to everyone there, Rita Skeeter secretly arrived earlier than expected and witnessed everything while in her Animagus form. The story that unfolded was far better than what Emily had promised her.

What are your thoughts on Ismelda?
Ismelda Murk is...actually one of the more developed characters in this game, and boy did that kind of creep up on all of us.
Looking back on where she started to where she is now, and especially comparing her journey with Merula's (as it's the most obvious comparison to make) she's doing remarkably well. Ismelda is so gosh darn human that I can't help loving her. She's a total deconstruction of the Slytherin stereotype - compared to Liz, who challenges it, and Barnaby, who completely averts it - Ismelda, you could make a case that she is the way she is because she was placed there and treated as such. A product of her circumstances. Is that an excuse? No, but it does explain a lot. And analyzing why a character acts the way they do is one of my favorite pastimes.
Ismelda was a lonely, embittered little girl with parents who didn't love her and a sister who never made time for her. (And inadvertently sent the message that she didn't love her either.) Consequentially, Ismelda had no frame of reference for relationships when she came to Hogwarts. She didn't have a positive presence in her life. She came to school and met Merula, and oh boy, did that not help. Especially since I don't think the two of them were that close until Year 3 - before that, Merula spent all her time with Tulip. I think Ismelda learned a lesson at this time - that she was nobody's first choice and she never would be. When she was chosen, it was out of necessity. But hell, she needed a friend too, so why would she care if Merula was only employing her as a lackey in place of someone else after she got dumped? At least she had a chance to socialize, and hang out with that really cute bloke. Shame he was too thick to catch on to her feelings...and too thick in general.
Ismelda was never taught the value of love and kindness, she came to school without any understanding of how to treat people, no examples. Then she was sorted into a House that is more isolated from any other, and filled with people who came from Death Eater families, including but not limited to Merula. Everyone else? They were terrified of Voldemort and glad that he was gone. So Ismelda found a strategy to shield herself. I think she learned to be rude and scary back at home, as a defense mechanism and form of revenge on her family - but once at Hogwarts, she further molded this persona into the "budding Death Eater" we see during her first appearances. But it's all just a mask. One that Ismelda wears for so long that she sometimes doesn't know if it is a mask and forgets how to take it off. But that doesn't mean she wanted to be so awful to everyone all the time. The thing is, mistreating people doesn't feel good. To anyone with even a shred of a conscience, scaring and hurting people feels wrong. That would have caught up with Ismelda, hence her realizing how instinctive her behavior has come, that she's on autopilot. But who to turn to for help? Barnaby wouldn't understand and Merula would disagree. So Ismelda has no option left apart from MC.
Hey look, we got to Crushed. One of the better sidequests in this game and it really makes Ismelda that much more interesting. We finally understand why she is the way she is. She was never good enough for her parents, so why keep trying? Instead, why not swing into the opposite extreme out of spite? Annalena doesn't want her friends to know about Ismelda? She'll give her sister a reason to hide her existence. It's all very complicated and saddening to look at how fractured all of the primary relationships are in Ismelda's life and how this reflects in her behavior. But so long as we're talking about Crushed, I do have to mention the erumpent in the room. The worst thing she ever did. (Well...the Quibbler TLSQ might also count, but we don't talk about that quest. Just kidding, I will, but first, this.)
She tried to feed Barnaby a love potion.
I get it. She's desperate, socially stunted, afraid of being alone and of rejection, and what's the harm in making Barnaby love her, right? They'd both be happy, right? Well y'know, I wonder if Merope Gaunt didn't go through the same internal argument with herself over what to do about Tom Riddle Sr. While I can cut Ismelda a little slack here since she was only fifteen and doesn't seem to fully comprehend the impact of making such a choice and doing that to another person...the fact is, what she tried to do was selfish and disturbing. It was definitely a red flag. But...it's also fair to point out that she was acting based on pure emotion. (This is the quest that opened with Emily reading her diary aloud, let's not forget.) And after MC stopped her, well, she hasn't tried anything else like that since. I do like to think that Ismelda learned her lesson.
Ever since that incident, Ismelda has been steadily fleshed out more and more. I really like how, even in the main story, the mask she created has all but slipped entirely away, and now Ismelda is little more than an awkward and occasionally grumpy teenager who just kind of hangs out with the group despite trying to appear as though she doesn't like them. No, even in that, she's basically given up. To an extent, her adopted persona did merge into her true personality, but she's still quite likeable. Her love of history, for example. I wonder how that started, where it came from. Maybe she had an aunt or uncle who got her into it or something like that - or maybe she distracted herself a lot by reading history books as a child to ignore the pain and loneliness. I enjoy her genuine surprise if MC asks her to the Celestial Ball (which came out not long after Crushed and makes for a good follow-up to it, actually....) I also love how she says "crikey." Which just seems so unlike her.
But in a way, that's kind of a major facet of Ismelda. She can sometimes, quite randomly, be very cute in weird little ways. Like her penchant for pumpkin fizz drinks, specifically with the little umbrellas. That is such a random and out of place detail but for some reason it works really well for her? Couple that with the line from the Quibbler TLSQ where she says that she wants to stuff her face with chocolate also known as the one line she has in that quest that actually feels like it's in-character and I'm starting to think Ismelda has a real sweet tooth. Which again, she doesn't seem like the type, but Ismelda hides so much of her true self for so long, that we probably don't even know everything about her just yet, despite how well she's evolved as a character. She's showing us her true self a little more every day, one tossed puffskein at a time. (Seriously that is so cute I can't stand it.)
Speaking of tossing puffskeins, let's talk about her puffskein tossing buddy, one Beatrice Haywood. Actually, before we get into that, we need to further discuss what led Ismelda to meeting Beatrice. Because Ismelda had no one, by Year 6. She was alone. Her parents, her sister, she was no longer chasing Barnaby. She and Merula had, by all appearances, drifted apart and possibly had a major fight offscreen. We see how insecure Ismelda is about losing the one friend she's got to MC, who reminds her of Annalena, I might add...despite the fact that Ismelda doesn't even seem to like Merula very much. Calling her out on being annoying more and more frequently as time goes on. It's a friendship of mutual convenience, but as sad as it is to say...prior to Year 6, Merula is the only person Ismelda has, but Merula is neglecting her for MC and her new curse-breaking "family." I wonder if it was during this time that she made friends with those "lackeys" and tried to out Chiara-nope, no, you know what, I'll get to that when I get to that. For now, I really need to focus on Ismelda's relationship to Beatrice because it's so damn wholesome.
These two have so much in common, and met at the perfect time in both of their lives. Beatrice was craving a friend, and Ismelda was all alone, as I just described. Ismelda needed a friendship where she could be the "leader" so to speak, to ensure she wouldn't feel used again. Actually, maybe that's not the best way to put it. I mean, Ismelda being older does give it that vibe but they do seem to function as equals, and they also kind of work like yes men to each other. But I also think Ismelda reached a point of emotional maturity when she started hanging out with Beatrice that she'd been unable or unwilling to reach before. Whether it was for Bea's sake or just a personal epiphany, I don't think it much matters. Ismelda is growing as a person every day, and that growth took an exponential rise during Year 6. I'll never get over the moment that she leaves the plot of Y6CH27 because she realizes, and immediately accepts, that she's not emotionally equipped to help Beatrice in that moment, so she passes the torch to MC. A far cry from challenging them to a duel out of an envious panic over the idea of losing her only friend. In just one year, she's come so far.
Which. Makes it so bizarre, really, and an absolute shame, to see this character arc flagrantly ignored. You know where this is going. It's time to finally talk about it. The one. The only. The Quibbler TLSQ. Where Ismelda randomly became a #meangirl even though she's about as far from that as one can possibly be. Ismelda acting as the antagonist is not the problem. That's fine, she's not always a hero. But her motivation, her plan, the way she goes about things...it feels a lot more like something Emily would do. Why wasn't this Emily, by the way? It's just...I could shrug it off if Ismelda's crime in this quest wasn't so completely unforgivable. Trying to out a werewolf is already bad enough, but doing it for a cash reward? To Chiara freaking Lobosca? No way in hell. This is the second time Ismelda has pulled a horrible stunt on another human being, and, this being Strike 2, I judge it more harshly. At least with the love potion, I understood where she was coming from. This quest just makes Ismelda into Rita Skeeter Jr. It makes her into everything she appears to despise. I genuinely have no idea how to reconcile it into my head-canons about her, beyond simply replacing her with Emily.
But hey, it's one quest, and while it's a stain on her record, it doesn't change the fact that the rest of her appearances make pretty damn good use of her. Like the Cook Off TLSQ and the Sphinx TLSQ. She's written wonderfully in those. She has her personality intact, but she feels likeable. It's strange to look back on a time when people thought she was irredeemable but Merula's redemption was assured...

This might be a controversial, but if Hogwarts Mystery had it's own "Heathers" or "Plastics" I think they would be
Chandler/Regina: Emily Tyler
Duke/Gretchen: Merula Snyde
McNamara/Karen: Penny Haywood
Emily Tyler- Her motives are mostly driven by popularity and control. She knows her role in society and will do anything to keep it that way. She doesn't care who you are or what you think about her if you can't help her get ahead of her "competitors".
Merula Snyde- Her motives are rooted in jealousy and constantly feeling "a step below" her peers. She cares too much about what everyone thinks about her. She is constantly trying to force herself into the spot light and get people to notice her. Her main goal is to step out of the background
Penny Haywood- She's aware of her popularity, but isn't motivated to use it to her advantage or the disadvantage of others. She's content with her role and is fine doing her own thing. (While this character archetype tends to be the "dumb but harmless" character, Penny is anything but dumb.)
These are just classic character archetypes. Obviously each character differs from these "definitions" in their own way and has more character depth than this. But to me it makes the most sense to categorize them this way.

Rakepick, to her proteges: I honestly can't even tell any of you apart half the time because I don't go by height or age, I go by amount of pain in my ass, which makes you all identical.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Charlie: You have no shame.
Merula: Oh, please. Like shame is something to be proud of.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Emily Tyler: How dare you criticize a national treasure!
Jae: National treasure? You're a regional trinket, at best.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tonks: I desire moisture.
Penny: Please just say "I want water" like a normal person.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bryn: Ismelda, could you pass the salt?
Ismelda: Ames, could you pass away?
Felix: [to the first years] This is normal.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sean: [to Peter shortly before being Oblivated] You look like a rat poison salesman who regularly samples his own product.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hagrid: How's life treating you, Kit?
Kit: Like I ran over it's dog.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Corey: When I was younger I had a crush on a boy in my class and didn’t know how to deal with it so I wrote him a letter that just said, “Get out of my school”.
Bryn: THAT WAS YOU?!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tulip: This is a defining moment for you, Ben Copper.
Tonks: Yeah, you can either obey rules for the rest of your life and make no impact on the world, or you can stand up to authority and pull this prank on Snape!
Ben: ...Is there a third option?
Sean: Nervously tag along?
Ben: Great! I choose the nervously tag along option.

Preview of the next batch of sketches I’ve been working on. It also became a practice session for getting the hang of drawing good ol’ bitchy Emily Tyler. Posted this one in particular as I thought it was funny seeing how much taller Reina is even though she’s the younger of the two. Still a few tweaks left, and four more sketches to go.
