⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5
THIS BOOK!!!
Not only entertaining but also interesting, Evelyn’s character has so many layers, I love how she’s written.
Here is a quote I really liked:
“You do not know how fast you have been running, how hard you have been working, how truly exhausted you are, until someone stands behind you and says, “It’s OK, you can fall down now. I’ll catch you.” So I fell down. And Harry caught me.”
Art by me :D

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Book review
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (2017)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
"Doesn't it bother you? That your husbands have become such a headline story, so often mentioned, that they have nearly eclipsed your work and yourself?" "No," she told me. "Because they are just husbands. I am Evelyn Hugo. And anyway, I think once people know the truth, they will be much more interested in my wife." (p. 385)
i finished this book september 11, 2023 at 2am because this is a book you can't put it down!
the story follows Monique Grant, a small magazine writer in New York, getting the proposition of her dreams! for some reason, old Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo has requested her specifically for an interview, to the confusion of her boss and Monique herself. Then, when she meets the icon, Evelyn claims she wanted Monique for a specific reason and also not for an interview, but a biography, that will be released after her death. Evelyn is sharing the story of her life, a story surrounded by lights and fame, of blitz and glamour and also of a forbidden love and found family. At the end Monique learns of a truth that shakes her very being.
this book is so beautiful, so touching, outstanding and spectacular and at this point the best book i’ve read all year, maybe even in a while.. i dont have anything negative to say, such a good experience it was to read! 💖 the life of Evelyn Hugo and how it affected Moniques life is such an amazing journey to take and i recomend it to everyone who is interested in historic books and LGBTQ+ stories. 🌈
the trip back in time to the blitz and glitz of old Hollywood, through the lens of Evelyn Hugo, a character based on all the movie actresses of the old times, told through eras of the husbands, telling the story of the truest deepest love and such a beautiful found family that will make every queer person jealous 😍
i love this book much more than what i had expected i would and its my advice not to let the hype ruin this for you, in the case that anyone reading this hasnt already read the book. Should you come across it, do yourself a huge favor and read it, it's not that long, and you'll thank me ❤️

Hi!!! Happy travels! (is that thing in French or English?) soooo, I see you're going to read Evelyn Hugo, and this is my official request that when you finish it you come back here and give your opinions on it! I have A LOT of feelings/opinions about it, but I'd like to hear from you! Have a nice day!
hey anon! thank you! i don't think "happy travels" is a saying per se, but the french is "good travels", so i get what you mean <3.
okay so i'd actually started evelyn hugo this summer, and finished the rest on the plane yesterday, so i'm happy to report back! spoilers below the cut.
i gave it a 4/5 in my own little book rating system, and overall, i really, really liked it.
what i loved:
i loved how queer it was (which i wasn't expecting), but also how realistic it was in terms of queer stigma - not only with its time, but also with the film industry in general. i loved the conversation where one of them is like "elton john's been out for years" and the other one is like "yeah, elton john isn't living off his straight sex appeal though." it's kind of true. say a male-gaze beauty icon like megan fox was to come out as gay, i'm not sure she'd be as marketable, etc. so, in sum, i loved that aspect of the book. i loved the struggle everyone experiences with the sexuality, and how hard being in the closet also is, lying to everyone all the time. i thought this was great.
i also loved the way the book deals with the passage of time, and the phenomenon of getting old, especially in the public eye. i love how it blurs over whole sections of evelyn's life, in a "life just happened" sort of way, because that's also the truth, isn't it? years just pass sometimes.
i also very much loved (i think this might actually be my favourite thing about the book) how much value it puts on friendship, and chosen families, rather than biological families. i thought this was very unusual and refreshing, in adult literature. children's literature often puts a lot of value on friendship, then it all becomes about romance, and what the fuck do these people do with their friends, you know? and i felt like the relationship between harry and evelyn in this book was every bit as important as her relationship with celia, and treated with the same level of care and respect, which i very much appreciated. the fact that the happiest time in evelyn's life seems to be when they were all living in manhattan together felt so very precious. i frankly started bawling (in public, on the plane lmao) when harry died, and didn't stop until connor died. that's also perhaps something i wasn't expecting about this book. it is sad.
what i loved... less:
the reason why this book is a 4 ⭐️ and not a 5 ⭐️ is two-fold.
first, whilst it was well-written (and, if i ever manage to write an original work of fiction to this level, i will be very happy), the style didn't make me go "wow". the prose was great, it was lively and definitely enjoyable, but it didn't have the jaw-dropping factor i sometimes find in novels like incendiary or normal people. those are my five-stars, and this just wasn't to that level.
second, and most importantly, i just didn't like the end. i felt like the final reveal fell... flat? at least, for me. if the story of monique's father was going to be the front and centre of her relationship with evelyn, i would have wanted more... context? on her life, on her parents? i feel like if that was going to be The Story, then why spent all that time on her failing marriage? when the reveal happened, i was like "wait, who is james grant?" 😆. i just wasn't as shocked as i feel i should have been. i feel like this part of the story was unnecessary, didn't really answer anything, and if the gayness of her own father was going to be the question, then this reveal should have occurred maybe mid-book, and given monique more time to react to it/sort it out? idk. i just felt like the evelyn story was so beautiful and intense, it could have stood on its own, without that final reveal.
additionally, i'm a bit annoyed that nothing was said about the way that monique seemed to think moving the body in the car was Perfectly Okay until she found out the dead guy was her father, at which point she freaked? i would have loved for her to have a conversation with evelyn (or at leats it be addressed somehow) about how morally reprehensible actions against people you don't know, often feel a lot more justifiable than morally reprehensible actions against people you do know. this was totally not addressed, and it frankly pissed me off.
so yeah, overall, i really liked the book, but it had its flaws. but i'm curious, what are your thoughts? ❤️

the devil and the dark water, stuart turton
released 2020
read: 12 february 2023 – 26 february 2023
not gonna lie, i didn't like this half as much as i did the seven deaths of evelyn hardcastle. i'm really surprised at the difference in quality from the same author. this wasn't awful, but a lot of what evelyn hardcastle did right, the devil did... really wrong.
for starters, the cast. TSDOEH had a big cast, (the author likes to make casts big enough to list each character at the beginning of the book for helpful reference), but it made sense as to why, and each character was given due importance to the story and time to develop. meanwhile, TDATDW's cast felt too big. i got pretty confused from the beginning trying to keep track of everyone. eventually, i got used to it, but i still think some of the characters could've been scrapped or amalgamated. i also think generally, the characters had less personality than those of his previous book. of the main characters, arent was okay. sara was okay. creesije i kinda liked (?) sammy was kinda cool with his sherlock vibe, but he wasn't present for the majority of the book.
in terms of the plot... it had the potential to be so, so good. the premise sounds awesome. the execution... fell flat. it dragged out so long, i was bored a lot of the time. there were small sparks throughout of the excitement that i'd seen in TSDOEH, but they would fizzle out. it wasn't until the 75%-80% mark that i felt truly engaged in the mystery. for the twist ending, let's just say i liked some parts and hated others.
i maybe didn't enjoy the setting as much either; i think the manor mystery was bogged down less by the technicalities that come with setting a book on an ocean voyage.
it sounds like i hated this book - i didn't, and i do think 3 stars is fair, it just paled in comparison to his other work. that said, i'll still be very interested in seeing what comes next from stuart turton.

darling + sugar? ~sunlight-ships
⭐️ Thank you so much for the ask and I’ll be sure to send some your way!
Darling - is there anything you hold close because it reminds you of your f/o? what about them?
Sugar - are there any kinds of food you like to make for one another? are you/they picky when it comes to food?
⭐️ Spoiler Warning - Cyberpunk 2077 ⭐️
Viktor Vektor
Tumblr media
Darling: Most of the time, Vik likes to wear his boxing glove necklace as it reminds him of his boxing career before becoming a ripperdoc. However, as a birthday gift, he managed to find someone to make a copy of it for him so I could always have a little part of him with me always.
Sugar: Viktor is a workaholic, leaving for his clinic early in the morning and not coming home till late on that night so I make sure to deliver some homemade food down to the clinic to make sure that he’s keeping well and not working too hard. It also make sure to bring some for both Misty and Jackie as well.
Judy
Tumblr media
Darling: With Judy, it’s not a certain thing that I hold close, more of a feeling. When Evelyn passed, Judy couldn’t manage to shake off the sadness so instead of just being inside and upset, we decided to climb up onto the rooftop and watch the sunset and enjoy each other’s company so whenever I’m across doing merc work in Night City, I only have to see the sun setting to remind me of her.
Sugar: Neither I or Judy are much of a cook and most of the time, our meals turn into some burnt disaster. Mostly we treat each other to either a takeaway or a quick trip to a nearby diner.
River Ward
Tumblr media
Darling: Most of the time, River can be seen wearing his coat, however when it occasionally gets cold in the Badlands, he will slip the beige coloured jacket around my shoulders; which has now become my favourite item of clothing due to the warmth of it.
Sugar: River is very much a family man, preferring to cook whenever he can get the chance to. Most nights are spent with River’s sister, Joss and her children as he likes to make sure that they are also cared for especially after Randy’s kidnapping.
Again thank you for the asks and I’ll be sure to send some your way! ⭐️

Tag Game
Ty for tagging me @rosemaryandarsenic I love tag games! :D
Favorite color - pinkpinkpinkpink <3
Currently watching - The Owl House; such a cute cartoon with good rep and I love King so much 🥺 I would go to war for any character voiced by Alex Hirsch
Currently reading - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It’s pretty good but I don’t care for the way it’s written. I know it’s covering several decades in one book but the scenes don’t get a chance marinate and draw you in. I like books where I can live in the moment.
Currently listening to - Braving the Elements! It’s the ATLA podcast hosted by Janet Varney (Korra) and Dante Basco (Zuko). Highly recommend! They’re very put together and prepared unlike a lot of other podcasts lol
Last series - Phineas and Ferb. Just had it on the background while I played on my Switch lol
Last movie - Bullet Train 🚄 mainly because Aaron Taylor-Johnson make brain go brr but it was a really fun movie! 3.5 stars ⭐️ (ATJ, call me)
Sweet/spicy/savory - sweet! I love me a good brownie
Currently working on - nothing at this very moment because I’m taking a writing break but I’ll probably get to work on my Gravity Falls Hellcheer AU soon since I’ve already started it 💖

Book: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ / 5
Format: Paperback
Highlights: LGBTQIA+ representation (sapphic relationship, gay characters), old Hollywood glamour, angst
Review: This book hooked me from start to finish, I could not put it down. The way the story is told is interesting and unique and I found myself enjoying both the present and past storylines in the book. I expected to be annoyed by the excerpts from Monique back into the present but I was equally invested in her story which was so interesting to read. Being able to have some really good bisexual representation was also huge, as it's something that is so often written off as bisexual people being one or the other and that's not how it works. It’s a beautiful story with some very dark and intense parts that make it all the more real. It also focuses on women and the men around them in response to their own stories which is so rare to see. I loved this book so much.
Why should you read it?: if you want old Hollywood glamour, drama, the most angsty sapphic relationship I’ve ever read about, and some AMAZING 💕💜💙 bisexual representation that isn’t written off as straight or lesbian when it’s convenient, you absolutely need to read this book.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS- 2003 ⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
Adam (Paul Rudd) is a mild mannered dork who never takes risks or goes outside his comfort zone. That all changes when he falls for Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), shes an attractive art student who is a bit mental but works well for him.
He starts to get less embarrassing and more cool. But when Evelyn starts to clash with Jenny and Phil, his only friends, he to decide who he wants to keep.
A real mixed bag. I maybe enjoyed it more than the two stars would indicate, but thats just because i couldnt get into the direction the film went in. The first half of the film was very pleasant. Rudd and Weisz have good chemistry.
Now the twist, although i didnt see it coming until a minute before it happened, i didnt like it. From that point on i just didnt feel like i was watching the same movie. It was bizarre.

REVIEWS OF THE WEEK!
Books I’ve read so far in 2022!
Friend me on Goodreads here to follow my more up to date reading journey for the year!
___
85. When We Were Them by Laura Taylor Namey--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Namey does it again, but with some extra tears this time. What an absolutely beautiful story of friendship, family, love, and grief. These are the kinds of friendships that most people aren’t lucky enough to experience in their lifetime. I knew the heartbreak was coming but it still didn’t stop my tears from coming. And that decision at the end? I’m not lying when I say that I cried TWICE while reading this book. Also, I loved the mention of some of them being Cuban and including Spanish and the family togetherness that comes with being Cuban. This author wowed me with her last book and I’m so glad I was able to read this one, too! She’s definitely an autobuy for me! If you want a story about three close friends and their experiences together through hardships and grief, you might enjoy this one. This has a love story inside of it, but this story is more about the friendships that help build us up and help us grow.
___
86. When All the Girls Are Sleeping by Emily Arsenault--⭐️⭐️⭐️
This book was entertaining because of the intriguing mystery and the occasionally spooky moments. I found myself truly curious about what the MC would find in her investigation. While it wasn't my favourite ghost story, I can appreciate it for the tropes it explored, mainly the boarding school, mean girls, and sounds in the night themes. But the thing about this book is that it was just...a bit of fun on my way to my next book? I'm not even 100% sure what to say about it in this review.
I WILL say this though: the ending was both a good and disappointing twist. I'll admit that at one point there were so many characters that I lost track of them all. So that affected me in trying to solve the mystery before the twist, but alas, I was taken by surprise. I was disappointed because it didn't go the way I wanted, and it was at the same time good because I didn't see it going where it did. Anyway, this is a good read for those who don't want a super scary ghost story set in a boarding school! You'll be able to read this one in the dark.
___
87. Violeta by Isabel Allende--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ugh, this book was SO BEAUTIFUL. Basically, as I explained to a friend of mine, this book will feed that craving you may have had after finishing SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO. Steeped in history and full of characters that felt so real that I had to fight the urge to google them afterwards, Allende's novel was a work of art. I have never read anything by this author and the first thought I had while listening to this audiobook was "I wonder what it would be like to read this in Spanish?" (Now I want to get the Spanish edition to read). We follow Violeta from the moment she is born until the moment she dies (not a spoiler, just an inevitability) and this woman lived such an incredibly full life during tumultuous moments in American and South American history. I literally just finished this like twenty minutes ago and I'm still sitting beside her as she breathes her last breaths. If you read a beautifully written book this year, let it be VIOLETA. Also, be prepared to find yourself invested with all of the characters Violeta meets and grows with. One of the saddest and most beautiful things about books like this is that you have the pleasure (or displeasure) of meeting these pivotal characters and then know them until their deaths. This aspect of books like this feed into my fear of passing time and how we are all momentary stories in each others' lives. Anyway, read this. It's gorgeous. One of my favourite reads of the years. Hands down.
___
88. Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins--⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’m not much of a thriller reader but the premise for this one really caught my eye. This was an enjoyable read that I think would be great for the summer! It wasn’t perfect and had various flaws (like the characters and the going back and forth from the past to the present.) I will say, however, that I surprisingly didn’t see that twist coming. After it happened, I smacked myself because I should have but the characters played the whole thing off really, really well (or otherwise, there’s a plot hole or two in there somewhere.) I’m a sucker for anything relating to small and uninhabited islands, so this was an intriguing aspect. They definitely teased us about the sharks though, I’m not going to lie. Maybe I should read more thrillers by this author?
___
89. The Violence by Delilah S. Dawson--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When I first came across this book at work, I was immediately intrigued by the simple cover and the synopsis. Despite its length, this book had me hooked until the very end. One of the weirdest things in here, which I'm surprised I haven't seen more of in newer fiction, is the casual mention of the pandemic and the aftermath. It was jarring seeing the narrators refer to it so casually because, honestly, I've found that a lot of authors have preferred to treat the topic as something that doesn't exist in their fiction. Other than that, I quite enjoyed this and the way the characters grew from their experiences. The author begins the book with a trigger warning and the idea that this book deals with a personal topic: Domestic Abuse. The parts where we see it in action are disturbing and incredibly sad, especially when you take into account all of the players involved, the victim blaming, and the incredible gaslighting happening from people in power. I also really liked that we got multiple perspectives because this story is more than a linear one. I enjoyed seeing the wave of metaphorical destruction one decision caused because it led to so much growth. A couple of things took away from the rating, though. First, I do wish this was a scarier book. There was definitely the potential for scarier moments (and I don't mean body horror, or zombie-like activities). There were definitely some eerie and stomach turning moments, but I feel like this would have benefitted from more psychological horror, maybe? The second thing is that we don't truly see a lot of The Violence. Maybe that's what the author was trying to do; the lingering fear of whether or not you have could possibly be the real point. I think The Violence is also a bit of a metaphor for some of the topics explored and it is a plot device, which is fine, but I would have liked to see more of it outside of the metaphorical stage. Anyway, I enjoyed this and it's definitely for those who enjoyed slightly longer subtle horror. Also, if you want a bit of social commentary in your horror novels, then this one could be for you!
___
90. A School Frozen in Time Vol 3 by Naoshi Arakawa & Mizuki Tsujimura--⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This volume was a lot creepier, which I find fitting considering how close we are to the end. I like that this volume also touches on the different kinds of pain and grief that we experience when faced with our own unique circumstances (unique in how we feel and how we handle said situations). There was one character in a flashback that I wanted to push into a muddy puddle. She’s one of those people who sees someone being bullied and says “I’m no hero, it’s not my problem.” Anyway, onto the final volume! (I think I know who the person who put them in this situation is…let’s see if I’m right.)

Have you read any of these? Would you recommend them?

Happy reading!

a/n. for @matchaxmatcha’s valentines event. happy valentines! ❤️(its in a letter format idk help)
hi y/n,
i know i’m such a coward for doing this on pen and paper but, i’d chicken out if i did it face to face so i guess this would be the best method. promise me you’ll read till the end?
i know we’ve been friends for so long, 12 years.. this might ruin our friendship but i wanna take the risk. well if you don’t want to, it’s okay, i just want us to still be best friends but i really do like you baby. it’s been so long i’ve lost count of when i started falling for you. your smile and your laughter is so contagious, do you know that? i don’t know if you’ve noticed but, i laugh every time you do. you’re just so perfect in my eyes, so pretty, kind, caring, i could list every word in my vocabulary just to describe you. that’s how perfect you are to me. i’ve been wanting to ask you for so many years now, but every time, if it wasn’t me chickening out, you’d already have one. your ex boyfriends to be specific. i know they didn’t treat you the best, and i know you deserved way better than them. i’ve seen you at your lowest points, crying over those stupid exes of yours, i’m glad you know they weren’t worth it now. you know, when you cried over them? my heart shattered. it hurt so much to see you hurting over them, people who didn’t deserve an angel like you. i wanted so much to beat them up but, you would have killed me. given that you didn’t hate them even though they were such assholes to you. i remember every single time you were happy, such a pretty smile on a pretty face. do you remember when you got into the college you wanted so bad, and on top of that i got in together with you? that day, you quite literally shed tears of happiness. i'll forever remember that moment.
you always say i’m the best photographer you know, taking such pretty pictures for you but i think otherwise. i'm no photographer, but i can picture you and me together.
i really like you y/n, will you be my valentines?
love, beomgyu
p.s. was that line really corny?

Writing Ask Game (except I answer them all)
💜- top 3 favorite lines:
“I’ve got you.” Evelyn mutters, risking the sound, because she needs him to know that she’s here. (ttfattf ch. 17) (evelyn x emmett)
There’s an echo of her pain in his face.(ttfattf ch 5)
He said her name as if it were meant to be written on tapestries and hung in gilded temples. He said her name as if it was a whisper to the stars, a promise to the cosmos, a prayer to the Gods. (opposites on the color wheel) (caleb widogast x jester lavore)
☕️- favorite passage
Emmett gives her lustrous and humid summers on baseball fields and campgrounds and swimming in creeks. He tells her about outdoor concerts and games he’s seen and which were the best. She gives him candied and vivacious autumns with apple picking and homemade costumes and movie marathons. She tells him about surviving nursing school and becoming a role model for her younger sisters.
He gives her pollen-soaked spring, building blanket forts with his brother and learning to drive stick-shift with his father. He tells her about his mother who passed away when he was in his early twenties. She gives him frigid, white-out winters cooped up in a skiing lodge with her college friends and her first and only trip into Manhattan to see the ball drop. She tells him about her childhood dream to be a fashion designer and how that dream ended when her father had a heart scare (“Nothing serious.” She says with a grimace, “But, when you’re seventeen everything feels like life or death.”)
(ttattf ch 13)
👻- 2 or 3 sentences from something you haven’t posted yet
(already posted this one. thank u to the anon who sent it!)
😅- a line that made you feel second hand embarrassment
i am gonna be real with u....i don’t think i have any LMAO
👁- series or oneshots?
series, because i’m INSANE.
💍- your most underrated story
The ONLY ever community fic I wrote !! I didn’t even finish the show, lmao. But, it’s Jeff x Britta featuring “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
☺️- a line that made you feel a fluffy happiness
Emmett shook his head faintly, a fond smile tugging at his lips, “You’re a gift to me every single day.” (12 heartbeats ch. 10)
😳- your scariest line
i don’t write SCARY things. I don’t think so anyway.
😏- your most risky line
baby. i’ve written smut. they’re ALL risky.
💁‍♀️- reader insert or OC?
as a main character for shippy purposes, reader insert.
but OC’s are good for like side-characters/supporting cast. I think all my fandom focused fics feature at least one or two OC’s.
👶- advice for new writers
be cringe. it’s fine. write silly stuff, write the goddamn story of your dreams with a 100 plot holes.
👀- favorite response to one of your works
i love them all tbh. but this one made me laugh/is one of my favorites:
“Crazy story, I shipped this pairing since the first AQP2 trailer came out a YEAR ago. The prospect of two steely survivors with heavy backstories and two different ways of surviving the death angels and the possibilities that could happen when they both worked together was SO appealing to me, BUT I also knew the ship wouldn’t work without tremendous amounts of slow burn to work through the ptsd endured by both characters and a lengthy plot to get them there. I go on ao3 just to try out my luck and LO AND BEHOLD YOU HAVE MADE MY DREAMS LITERALLY COME TRUE. WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE YOU. “(TTFATTF Chapter 16 Comment)
⭐️- how do you get your inspiration?
reading & music, mostly! Lots of times I’ll start reading a story (not fanfic, but like a book on my kindle) and then fully zone-out and think about my own story sdfjkslfjdskl
🎲- your favorite chapter/part from a multiparty series
Chapter six of wildfire because it’s filled with SO MUCH romantic/sexual tension lmao.
💻- three works of yours that are must reads
If you like Reader Inserts, I wrote a Clyde Logan (From Logan Lucky), that I think is pretty good. (Take Me Home)
If you like Sansa/Tyrion Canon-Divergence & slow-burns & long-fics, then this one is for you. ( To Tame a Lion, to Tame a Wolf).
If you like fluffy, light, easy-reads, then this 12-chapter one-shot collection of Evelyn/Emmett - (In the Span of 12 Heartbeats).
💊- what is something that you wish you knew before you started writing?
It’s okay to not finish stuff. Don’t beat yourself up over it if you lose inspiration and yes--you can always come back to a work even if it’s months later.
🎈- what’s a spoiler for a wip or series?
:) Sanctuary doesn’t last forever.
😂- a line that made you laugh out loud
Lmao. This one.
“FLUFFERNUTTER!” Veth screams out, swiftly followed by a squishy, wet BANG! Large chunks of chocolate, frosting, and cake explode outward and Jester cries out in surprise as they land in her hair and on her dress. (i’ll fetch you the moon).
🎀- favorite story
right now, I really love my “through the flood & through the fear.” but, asking me to pick a favorite is like selecting a favorite child.
👎- if you could change something in one of your works, what would you change and why?
more kissing.
😢- a line that made you cry
“I tried to save him—” Emmett chokes out, trying to talk around the lump in his throat, and the fear growing rapidly in his chest, “I tried to save you.”
“It wasn’t enough.” She draws her hands to her chest, squeezing them together into a fist, “It wasn’t enough.” (ttfattf ch 4)
💬- describe one of your completed works in three words
slow burn, canon? what canon?, and angst
💭- any ideas for a possible wip?
I’m working on a sheriff hassan x reader where the reader is a descendent of van helsing lmao
I’ve also noodled around with a fake engagement/co-workers/enemies-to-lovers au with evelyn/emmett but i don’t think i’ll write it lol
💕- opinion on AUs?
yes :D love them
💘- what’s your favorite AU? Least favorite?
Fav AU: fake dating/fake relationship because YEARNING!
Least Fav: I never really vibed with like billionare au or coffee shop. i write to escape capitalism lmao
🔍- does anyone in your personal life know that you write on tumblr?
no.
✏️- favorite part about writing
re-reading what i wrote and being like “yeah this shit rocks.” LMAO

The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea book review
The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea by Maggie Tokuda-Hall (2020)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
i finished this book october 12 on a train home from a halloween party. a bit embarrassing i was crying in public bc of this book but there you go lol. i bought this book a while ago along with another book, that ive wanted to read for a while, so i was more excited for that other book, but i gotta say, this book deserved some excitement as well!
the story follows Evelyn, the lady Hasagawa, on her way to marry a man she's never met, and Flora, the sailor on the Dove, the ship transporting people across the Sea. Unbeknownst to the passengers, they're actually captives, since the Dove is actually a pirate ship in disguise! Flora will have to find the right path for her in a cruel world, to learn how to protect those she loves and Evelyn will have to fight with her own strength to avoid a future of abuse, to fight for a life with her true love. the world is so captivating! i would love to read a sequel or a different story in the same world because i fell in love with it. it's incredibly interesting and very wellwritten worldbuilding. the care that Tokuda-Hall took with gender and how that's treated in the world is so wonderful to read! It would be nice if that could become more normal in books and not just found in a few...
"The Surpreme was not dressed as Rake might have guessed a Surpreme would dress. No finery. No useless frippery. (...) They were not a man, nor were they a woman, but rather something else entirely." (p. 178) "Yes, she was an orphan, a sister, a pirate, a girl and also a boy. But more importantly, she was a person who sought power to protect those she loved. Including herself. Or himself. Both were equally true to her. Neither told the whole story" (p. 294)
the relationship between Flora and Evelyn was very cute to experience and i loved it! insta-love often gets slack, which is understandable if done badly, but this book did it nicely. you believe that the moments that are skipped over Flora and Evelyn spent time together and so the relationship moving feels natural. the moment of their first kiss was so lovely and what happened in the end of the book crushed me, but then picked up the pieces of me and put it together again. Very cute and Very sapphic 💖 i feel like the Witch bit maybe could have been utilised a bit more. i feel like it didn’t matter a lot in the end, but i did love the way magic worked in this world and feel sad it wasn’t used more. magic is stories and sharing your story is sharing a part of your being. Flora used this magic in stories to find herself and who she truely was, which was neat but when she used the magic to try and save Evelyn, she had already escaped on her own, so it ended up not mattering a lot in the end, which was a shame... more reason for author to write more in the same setting, i want more witchy stuff!
tbh if more books had lesbian mermaids in it the world would truly be a better place. 🧜🏽‍♀️💕 i really hope Tokuda-Hall is gonna publish more work with this world setting, I would buy it in a second!

malice, keigo higashino
released 1996
read: 15 may 2023 – 23 may 2023
malice is part of my early ventures into the world of mysteries and thrillers. i'd read a couple here and there but after reading the seven lives of evelyn hardcastle earlier this year i was determined to take a more conscious dive into the genre and add a few to my reading list. well, while i'm not turned off the genre by any means, i will say that malice was just... a little bit mid? i think if you're looking for real jaw-dropping, edge-of-your-seat action this book is the wrong place to look (which, to be frank, is what i was hoping for).
there definitely were some twists and turns that i didn't see, and an interestingly crafted characterisation of the victim and main suspect. it's a story where nothing is as it seems, and i enjoyed that. it's also very well-paced and kept me fairly engaged throughout.
the language is very simple, clean, and to-the-point... but perhaps a bit too to-the-point. i don't know if this is the author's personal style, a common feature of japanese literature, or a pitfall of reading a translated version, but the language felt so simplistic that it gave thoughts and conversations a stilted, unnatural feel. i think this is potentially the biggest thing that stopped me from engaging even more with the material.
i probably won't make any efforts to read more of higashino's work, but i am hoping i can at least read more and more literature from other parts of the world!
rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

i ALSO finished the seven husbands of evelyn hugo by taylor jenkins reid!! review: THIS BOOK WAS GOLDEN. my gosh did tjr write a good book. this book was so BEAUTIFUL. seeing evelyn grow within her self and her mind was exciting and seeing the way she interacted with others and the way her mind worked was truly interesting. i was SHOCKED at why she ended up picking monique for the interview, but found it weirdly intriguing nonetheless. overall, this book was SO SO GOOD GO READ IT! 10/5⭐️! https://www.instagram.com/p/CbQ5l1qrUrS/?utm_medium=tumblr
