Aaron James receives the first face transplant in history

A team of more than 140 surgeons at NYU Langone Health in New York has successfully performed the first complete eye and face transplant in a living person. The astonishing odyssey began when Aaron James, a 46-year-old military veteran from Arkansas, suffered a devastating workplace accident that took away his left eye and significant portions of his face.

According to CNN‘s review, the incident occurred in June 2021, when Aaron, a high-voltage power lineman, suffered a 7,200-volt electrical shock while working in Mississippi. The accident left Aaron with extensive facial injuries, including the complete loss of his left eye, nose, lips and part of his left arm.

Aaron’s wife, Meagan, received the shocking news while driving home with their daughter Allie. Going through moments of uncertainty and anguish, Meagan embarked on a journey of more than four hours to reach the hospital where Aaron was being treated. Somebodies ~ Hi, I’m Jim ~ I say, and this is the dead honest truth, I’m glad I had that accident. It put an end to a destructive path my life has been on since coming back from Vietnam a heroin addict. For the last 16 years, I’d been either living on the streets or in and out of halfway homes. ~ In June of 2005 I blacked out at the Ruggles Subway Station in Boston and fell onto the tracks and the electrified 3rd rail ~ I can’t recall anything except that I just wanted to get really high. I got my methadone from the clinic at the VA that morning, which I got everyday for 30 years. I then got Klonopin on the street and took 60. People who do heroin are always searching for that first high, that feeling from that first high by taking larger and larger doses of drugs, but it doesn’t work. On the night of the accident I was rushed to the ER. They weren’t sure they could keep me alive. Almost a year and a half had passed before I was brought out of a medically induced coma after going through many operations. When I woke someone told me “You don’t have a nose.” A bandage was covering me so I didn’t believe them. The 3rd degree burns caused by the 3rd rail resulted in the loss of my nose, cheeks, teeth and the roof of my mouth. I had damaged one of my eyes and severely burned my arms and hands. The injuries were so bad that even with all the operations I was still extremely disfigured. ~ In 2009 I became the 2nd person in the United States to have a partial face transplant. ~ When I saw my face 4 days after the operation, I told my doctor, “I can’t believe you made me look so close to what I used to look like” ~ I’m 62 now. I’m looking good for 62! ~ Tidbit: Dr. Pomahac was a junior plastic surgeon the night they brought Jim in and had never seen such severe facial injuries. Ever since performing Jim’s operation he has led a team of doctors into the forefront of advances in transplant surgery and is now Director of Plastic Surgery Transplantation. ~ Note: Due to limits on IG this posting has been edited. Katie received the donation of a face in 2017, three years after losing her face during a suicide attempt with a rifle. Katie’s new face was donated by Sandra Bennington after her granddaughter, Adrea Schneider, fell into a coma from a drug overdose.
