Angstpril 2024 | Day 21 | Prompt 21: Faking a Smile

Rated: G | Words: 238 | Summary: Omega tries. | Character Focus: Omega

She is supposed to be happy.

To be free, to be with her brothers again, to be home. She has Lula and Trooper. Her gunner’s mount room just as she left it before…all of it. Before they lost Tech, before they lost her. The Marauder hasn’t changed in her months away, not that she expected it to. It feels different. Empty and sad and lost.

But she should be happy.

Hunter and Wrecker want her to be happy. Desperately. They want their Omega back. So Omega tries to resurrect her, to stretch the mindset of her old self over the growth and pain and loss and grief and guilt…but it only tears and rips apart, jagged edges, a throbbing reminder that nothing will ever be the same again. She thinks that her brothers know that. That she can’t be the same. That they aren’t the same. That time and experiences have worn them all down to shadows of who they were before.

But she wants to be happy.

So she pulls on a new version of herself. It fits loosely, but she’ll grow into it. Happiness will come again when she has grieved. Guilt will ebb when she makes reparations. Grief will melt into the memories of happier times as they are remembered. Loss will become gains, and pain will be soothed. Because that is one thing Omega hasn’t lost, hasn’t given up, hasn’t forgotten.

author's notes: i'm gonna be so honest i don't have much to write there LOL another shorter thing.sometimes i need to i wouldn't manage writing something long every day tbh

March kinda wishes she was better at hiding her emotions.

Well, maybe not all of them - only sometimes, whenever she’s feeling upset, or frustrated, or sad; especially when it’s seemingly without any reason. After all, if she doesn’t even know why she’s feeling that way herself, there’s no need to show it and trouble others with it, right? There’s no use taking up their time, because they won’t even be able to help her, and everyone will just end up frustrated, or so she thinks - so, she resorts to doing her best to act like nothing is happening at all.

…Most of the time, it doesn’t work, fortunately or not. Usually, sooner or later, she either lets something slip, or someone simply notices, even without that, and approaches her about it. Apparently, she’s not very good at acting, it's often quite obvious whenever she tries it.

She also has to admit, though, that… It's reassuring to know she can always go and talk to her friends when something is troubling her, no matter how small and unimportant it may seem to her.

Usually, the time at one of Cade and Vivian’s homes helps Drift relax. He’d still worry about Jamie, but not as he does at the base. While on vacation with friends in Florida, Drift cannot relax. He can’t stop worrying about Jamie. He’s not sure if it’s due to how bad her depression is, watching her lack of interest in anything and terrible eating habits, or he’d be this worried even if she was doing better.

Crosshairs finds Drift sitting on a chair on the deck. Even with Jamie napping, he finds it odd that Drift is out here. He knows he shouldn’t, but he does. “Hey,” Crosshairs gets his attention, “are you ok?” “Yeah,” Drift smiles, “thought I’d sit out here.” “Ok.” Crosshairs goes back into the house, uncertain if he should believe Drift. He can’t believe he’s questioning his friend’s response.

I wish I had some profound and poetic way to describe my sadness but the truth is I have nothing.

I have no inspiration or anything I truely love to the core, Anything that brings a real smile to my face.

I have no real feelings because anything you see of me is just a facade, A facade I have spent over a decade perfecting.

I have the material possesions that some would dream of; Honestly I would give them up in a heartbeat just to have any feeling instead of this numbness.

You’ll never know if I’m mad and you’ll never know if I’m sad because I learnt a long time ago to just swallow any remnants of feelings because nobody will understand anyway.

A soulless body walking this earth just waiting for the time when the end is right.

So I don’t have a beautiful way to describe my sadness because there is nothing left, No feeling, No love and certainly no Happiness.

Regulus knows better than most just how attractive James is.

He wouldn’t say he’s a jealous man generally, but he has been known to not so subtly slip a hand in James’ back pocket when he catches someone eyeing him at the supermarket. Or curl a hand around James’ arm as they’re waiting to be seated at a restaurant, the seater barely even noticing Regulus is there.

So perhaps it’s this jealous streak that has him feeling a little too possessive when he’s passing by James’ office and decides to pop in.

“Hi, is James about?”

The receptionist looks him up and down, fake smile plastered on her lips as she says, “Do you have an appointment?”

Oh, he hates her already.

“No, I don’t,” Regulus says, smiling back; though he’s positive his fake smile is much more convincing than hers.

She laughs, like the idea of visiting someone without an appointment is preposterous. Get over yourself; James is a lawyer, not a doctor. “I’m sorry, Mr Potter is fully booked today.”

“Can you leave a message for him? Tell him I dropped by?”

The fake smile is back, her nose scrunched a bit as she nods, “Of course. And who are you?”

Regulus probably enjoys it far too much when her mouth drops open as he says, “His husband.”
