When it comes to jay hate, I often see the complaint that he’s an “infuriating gay stereotype” because he’s feminine. But regardless of the fact that there’s nothing wrong with queer characters being feminine/flamboyant, I don’t really consider jay feminine. Yes, he does have dyed pink hair, but dyed hair and the color pink shouldn’t be gendered. And while yes, he does have a flamboyant color pallete, most superheroes have flashy colors on their suits. Those characters aren’t deemed as feminine.
Other than that, I don’t really understand why he’s considered feminine (and why that’s considered a negative trait). While I don’t like jumping to the “race card,” East Asian men are often emasculated in media, being portrayed as nerds, comedic relief, with no sex appeal. I can’t help but wonder if people assume jay must be inherently feminine because of ingrained racist beliefs. I don’t always like jumping to that conclusion, but unfortunately I’ve seen it a lot with Dc Twitter. (People can get so horribly racist when discussing Jay, and as a Asian fan, I always take it personally.)
Other than this, I don’t think he can be an “infuriating gay stereotype,” as he is not a character limited by his sexuality. I feel that his character has more to do than his race than sexuality. He spends the first arc of SOKE fighting against the American dictator of his country, and in the mind of many Asian readers like me, this dictator can easily be read as a colonizer. I think it’s amazing that Jay is the entire driving force of this comic who found his own way to fight against a colonizer in a story that easily avoids the White Savior trope. And I think it’s a disservice to his character to dismiss him as a gay stereotype.
Considering I haven’t been on tumblr in so long, this post may seem a little unprompted lol. But I’ve seen a lot of outright racist (and micro-aggressive) comments towards Jay lately, and I got a little fed up.
Anyways stan jay nakamura for clear skin 💕💕

I hate it when DE fans go "ACAB except Kim Kitsuragi".
No you dumbass, it would completely include Kim. You didn't get the game, you didn't get Kim's backstory, if you seriously believe that.
Like, sorry to break it to you, but Kim has issues with the fact he will always be patronized and discriminated, and one of the reasons is because he is part seolite. He tried to be a revolutionary, except it didn't work out thanks to the puppet state Revachol lives in, so his next best opportunity to be accepted is to be assimilated by the fascist system that is the Police; AND EVEN THEN he is patronized, discriminated, and ignored.
He takes bribes, he has an absurd car paid by the state, he gets mad at Harry for being drunk and drugged on the job; not because that's a bad thing, BUT BECAUSE IT MAKES THE RCM LOOK BAD. He doesn't care if Cuno is an abandoned child that deals and uses drugs, because "it's outside of our jurisdiction". And there's a lot of complex and interesting layers of why Kim is on the RCM, yet none of them are proof that Kim "doesn't count".
EVEN WORSE the game points out that Kim is incredibly conflicted by the fact that he wishes he could do more, the revolutionary at heart that he is, but he CAN'T, and how the RCM is part of that issue. But nuh-uh, y'all refuse to seriously analyze the RCM as a system, because then you would have to face the inevitable allegory that it's to the irl police system; so you just skip all that and go "but Kim is the exception 🥰".

ngl the "im white so i dont talk abt any characters' race ever bc im afraid of accidentally saying something racist" approach to fandom is like. very weak. imo.
like first of all: i get that "i dont incorporate race into my media analysis because i'm afraid of messing up" comes from a different place than "i don't incorporate race into my media analysis because I Don't See Race 😊 there is only The Human Race." but it has the same functional effect, right? that effect being that your analysis of [INSERT MEDIA HERE] ignores the very real way that race impacts people.
second of all: it feels kinda lazy! like ur saying "i dont know enough abt race to feel comfortable commenting on how race affects this show and i dont care enough to learn." the only way to become more comfortable discussing race is to actually practice discussing race. but when i see people saying this it feels like they're saying "i'm white, which means i don't know how to talk about race, and i don't have to know how to talk about race, and i don't ever have to know how to talk about race, so i'm choosing to never learn how to talk about race."
third of all: just because you don't openly talk about race doesn't mean you're any less likely to accidentally say or do something racist. implicit biases run deep, y'all. it's probably already there in your interpretation of the show. but the "i don't want to accidentally say something racist" implies that you are positive that your interpretation of the show isn't racist. and i'm not saying you're wrong. but i'm saying that if a person of color tells you that something you said about [INSERT MEDIA HERE] was racist, you better be prepared to actually listen and not just brush them off because "i can't be racist! i purposefully never talk about race just to make sure i'm not racist!"
which brings me to my final point: if you do accidentally say something racist... literally just apologize. if someone says you've been doing something racist, apologize and stop doing that thing. it's literally not that hard. i've done it. i've seen other people do it. "i'm scared of being called racist!" is such a weak excuse im tired of it. getting called racist is not the end of the fucking world. calm the fuck down and grow a spine. jesus.

Every time a homophobe and biphobe post that the show is ruined because Buck is bi, Oliver Stark is living his best life, happy that he can finally play Buck with 100% honesty and joy. And knows that in doing so, he's giving a majority of the fans joy.

DCxDP Idea:
A Jazz is Lex Luthor's daughter AU where they find out when Jazz is an adult, and Lex asks to meet her but Jazz only shows up to ream him out for his xenophobia. She gives a blistering explanation of how his arguments for Superman being dangerous are all very obviously classic racist/anti-immigrant arguments, and asks why she'd ever want to develop a relationship with a man like that. They are in public at the time because Lex is hoping for good publicity, and it goes completely viral.

as my good friend and i like to remind each other:
don't yuck people's yum. if you do so, at least keep it in the dms. no point in making people feel absolutely miserable for liking a certain thing, for having an oc you don't like - whatever it is. people constantly hating just for the sake of hating truly sour the fandom experience on social medias. there's a problem if the only way you feel better is by making others feel like crap.
and you, who shares the things you love online, who creates original characters and talks about their ships - know that you will never be able to please everyone and that's okay. don't let it stop you from sharing what you love, if it brings you happiness then keep doing it. you don't owe anyone anything, if what you like somehow upsets people, they can very easily just block you and move on. it's really that simple!

fyi it isn't considered fandom drama when fellow creators are being treated with disgusting racism, xenophobia, misogyny, or being told to kill themselves, or bullying anonymously.
boiling it down to just 'fandom drama' makes this kind of shit less serious than it is and it is INEXCUSABLE, unforgivable! especially in regards to racism/wishing death threats. you are not welcome nor allowed back into fandom afterwards and deserve to be shunned and shamed hence forth for your despicable behavior. do not let these loser bitches worm their way back into this fandom. you had a platform built upon gross behavior towards fellow creatives/peers that thought of you as friends, while you were secretly and vehemently treating them horribly, and you deserve to see everything you achieved crumbling before your very eyes. (and those in the dms at the time are just as complicit for not coming forward when they saw the disgusting behavior at hand. i don't care who the fuck you are, it's not okay!!!)
i'll just say, we need to stop putting creatives on a fucking platform or pedestal because we are all equal here and no one is better than anyone. also, we need to build these people up who were these gross bullies victims and support those, especially the BIPOC affected by this nasty bigotry behavior.

i originally added this to this post and then realized it was almost entirely off topic so:
people more eloquent than me (@chuplayswithfire comes to mind) have talked about racism within the context of the show and how izzy exemplifies a version of it that’s subtle enough to be realistic, obvious to POC and almost invisible to a lot of white people
i don’t think the writers wrote izzy intending him to be a racist the same way the badmintons or the british navy are. but saying he’s not racist at all, despite clearly living in a racist world, misses the point that i — and many other POC — have been trying to make. even stede is racist (see s1e2) and he’s our romantic hero
my point is, white people tend to perceive “that’s racist” as an attack on their moral integrity rather than a description of patterns of behavior, and it’s important to acknowledge when that happens so we can have actual productive conversations. i think some white people are afraid of calling something out when it seems like bullshit, and i’d encourage y’all to just……read more. read about anti racism. read about microaggressions. read about the history of racism in your country and the backlash that always follows progress
it’s going to take time and it’s going to feel uncomfortable, but i promise you’ll be vastly less afraid about fucking up if you just arm yourself with information

genuinely shoutout to any indigenous and poc warrior cats fans. this fandom is honestly one of the most vile and racist i’ve ever been apart of and it’s insane that you have to deal with that shit just to engage with the fandom of content you love.

Other highlights include Ed being skeptical of scented soap, Stede introducing Ed to the concept of towel drying his hair, and Ed having a revelation about "why Stede always smells so good" because he certainly couldn't have puzzled together that Stede might use scented grooming products.

how on earth are there still people in the notes of that new still being like ‘how will ed know what it says? he can’t read?’
i think he might be able to read folks. i think the show might be trying to convey he’s able to read by showing him Reading a Letter
