Reference for climates and precipitation

Last year I had a really boring physical environment class. It was tough to sit through that hour and half. But, in one of those classes we were shown this map, and I immediately thought of my map making. Definitly not my professors intention, but at least I took away something!

I applied it to my world map, and it really helped me get the climates to feel more real, so I thought some of you might appreciate it as well.

Basically, equatorial regions are warm, allowing more moisture content to be held in the air making it very humid. The moisture comes from the trade winds around the tropic lines which blow the moisture from the ocean west across the land.

The further west you go across land in the tropical-subtropical boundary, the less moisture carries over, creating dry and arid regions. These even extend right to the coast. Think of the Sahara, Australian outback, and Mojave deserts. Equatorial does mean its hot, but deserts don't lie there.

On the subarctic-midlatitude boundary we get the westerlies. These strong winds pick up moisture from the ocean and douse the west coast with high humidity, creating rainforests like we see in the Pacific northwest of America, and British Columbia of Canada.

Mountains also affect how much moisture flows across the continents, but their influence all depends on where they are placed. On this map they are blocking the westerly influence and creating larger dry areas.

Obviously I'm not a geography professor so I probably made a few mistakes in this post, and my understanding of it is quite basic. But I thought it might be a helpful thing to post. And I'd like to add, it is your world and your map. It doesn't have to be realistic, so don't let others knock you down for having different climate regions.

Something oddly satisfying about #mapmaking I find it quite fun. It's a good way to give your characters more depth and contest to if there's a world to relate them to. I like to use Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator as a base, the last panel. It's a pretty good internet app to make a full in depth map. There is plenty of settings and adjustments to you to personalize your map.
