Synopsis: Death has always reminded him of the inevitable. That's why he's afraid of establishing even a simple connection. Yet, in that moment, he found himself and another similar soul both seeking solace from each other.

"Don't get attached, it only increases loneliness....."

Those words rang in his head like an echoing bell. He knew what it meant, but despite everything he experienced, Sukiyaki still couldn't fully accept the reality.

It has always been death... death... and another death...

For how long must he endure it? He didn't know... He thought that he would be fine after the initial two incidents... He thought that after the inevitable passing of his first master, Heye, and her daughter, Luo Ye, his heart would heal with time. After all, it was by this time that he had company with another like him.

He thought... that he could slowly move on...

But, why is it that history always repeats itself...?

It's already been a year since the passing of his former master attendant, Jiro. And once more, the child he left was under Sukiyaki's care. It's like the heavens were playing a vicious prank on him, reminding him of the predicament that he is bound to.

A scornful scoff escaped the male's lips, eyebrows knitted. It was a sound that only came from a man who felt hopeless and was about to drown in despair. It made his heart heavy... so much heavier than his burden. The weight on his shoulders had been getting bigger and larger as if it was trying to suffocate him to death...

"Suki-kun."

A voice called out from afar. Sukiyaki turned around and saw the girl walking toward him, smiling brightly at him. He smiled in return and greeted her back.

"Hey, you're here~" She exclaimed happily. She was sixteen years old now. How quickly the time flies... "I was looking everywhere for you."

He saw the girl hopping gleefully when approaching him. Her face was full of life and was visibly gleaming, yet he couldn't seem to reciprocate her mood. Not when he's standing under the maple tree... The very reminder of what happened to his precious deceased humans. It seemed that everyone was linked to this cursed tree, but he shook the nonsensical thoughts out. After all, it's not like the maple tree was indeed cursed. It was just a coincidence that a maple tree was associated with them, and it was the only vivid memory he also had of them.

Sukiyaki then remembered the reason why he was in such a bad mood. It was because of his current situation. Even though he knew that there was nothing that could be done anymore, his heart still wanted to do something for them. It hurt... He couldn't help it. However, there is no doubt that those days were hard. They have suffered countless losses. And yet he couldn't help but think that something terrible may happen again...

"Why are you frowning?" He heard the girl inquiring as if she sensed his dark mind.

He looked at her, and said, "Just thinking about something..." He noticed the curious look on her face. His expression seemed quite strange, but he didn't mind. Instead, he simply replied, "Ah, it's alright. Don't worry about it. I'm just happy that I can spend time with you."

"Yeah," she nodded enthusiastically before saying, "Let's go home together. I'll cook you dinner later... I promise I won't overcook anything this time!"

Sukiyaki once questioned her cheery behavior. 

Ever since she was adopted into the family, she visibly shows her distaste for interacting and connecting with her grandfather's food souls. He immediately understands her passive-aggressive attitude as self-defense. He knew that she was afraid of intimacy... just like he was until now. He had observed this [h/c]ette during her stay here, and he was intrigued by her commitment to trying to form a relationship with them, albeit reluctantly. She slowly opened her heart to her food souls, Jiro acting as her guide and middleman. Sukiyaki would witness her happiness with them, and that alone brought a genuine smile to his face.

However, with the recent passing of Jiro, everything fell apart in an instant. There are no words to describe the pain of losing someone you cherished dearly, and there's no way to express it.

He witnessed the moment when she completely lost her will to live when he watched her wither and die inside. Her cheerful attitude disappeared completely, and she was now withdrawn and cold. He knew that she was suffering, and he wished that he could make things easier for her. However, he couldn't do anything, and this feeling only worsened whenever he saw her depressed state. It broke his heart beyond repair.

Despite every warning he reminded himself... Against his logic and reason, he had once more let his heart out for another person. But she wasn't just a person. She was a person whom he came to love. He let himself be involved with her, and now he got attached with no way out.

His hand reached over to the ground and gently pulled a large red flower from the grass and put it into the girl's hands. With his other hand, he held onto hers. The latter gave him an odd look before smiling at him. Sukiyaki stared down at her hand in his grasp... And he felt his chest tighten up slightly. He couldn't feel his heartbeat or breath anymore, but he couldn't stop staring either.

The two remained quiet for a while before the girl suddenly spoke.

"...Thank you," she gave his hand a gentle squeeze.

"No problem," he replied in a soft tone.

A pause passed between the two. Sukiyaki felt his grip on her hand tighten a little bit, almost subconsciously. He then released it and walked forward. The [h/c]ette followed suit and walked beside him. The walk was silent except for the crunching of leaves beneath their shoes.

He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled... Just from that simple act alone, it seemed that his needless worries and intrusive thoughts disappeared along with the wind. The same wind that carries countless maple leaves in its wake. Sukiyaki found himself glancing down at his beloved master, golden hues containing emotions that he couldn't decipher himself.

The man was sure that all the good things wouldn't last forever, and that sooner or later, he will surely experience the same heartache he went through before. But right now, he had only hoped for one thing...

"Huh...? Suki...kun?" [Y/n] blurted out in confusion, turning towards her companion to see his usual charming smile. Heat rushed to her face at that, but what made her heart race was the fact that Sukiyaki interlaced his slender fingers with hers.

Maybe... Just maybe... Even for a moment... Both of them could revel in respite — to seek solace from each other.

"Let's return to our home, [Y/n]."

thoughts on the new food fantasy updates: 

- yes i spent 41 dollars to get all the gyudon shards so i could fully ascend him. yes i know if i was patient and waited I wouldn’t need to spend half that much. yes i know gyudon comes back in the pool. no, i want nothing else with the event. i just really love gyudon and needed exactly 75 shards to fully ascend him.

- sanma and sukiyaki are cute like old school cute like ok dads 

- sanma: yeah i stayed up late to make us lunch and treats *is sleepy*

- sukiyaki: *tossing away his bloody clothes and weapons after staying                  up all night to fight fallen angels secretly without anyone’s knowledge*          awwwwww honey you’re so sweet, you do so much for us, i love you.                take a nap you deserve it 

- sukiyaki remind me of that one meme with the solider t-posing in front of the sleeping kid and is taking the brunt of the harm in order to protect the little pavillion LMAO 

- ALSO FASHION ICON SUKIYAKI HE HAD ALL THOSE FASHION MAGAZINES IN HIS ROOM HE REALLY TRIED TO DRESS UP FOR THE LITTLE TEA PARTY HE WANTED TO LOOK COOL AND TRENDY I LOVE THAT

- iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii hate the bar feature. like ok i hate it it feels so useless. you can only serve five drinks a day. leveling up takes for ever for no reason. you can’t keep extra ingredients OR drinks, which makes making the drinks so expensive. if I wanna make two pineapple juices???? I have to refresh the store??? all to buy four more un-fancy pineapple juices? and spend ten diamonds for a refresh that won’t even let me keep surplus ingredients that I bought? feels like an entire waste of money to me. 

- also apparently in the bar you can get food soul stories, but that’s only if you enter the bar at the times it’s open (so you need to log in during the 4ish hour window it’s open and then enter and exit the bar until you get or unlock some side story) like...why even have that be a thing LOL 

- also also you don’t receive any profit from the bar unless you enter during the time it’s open, even if you leave out drinks (heard this is just a glitch tho, waiting to see if it’ll get fixed)  

- each drink gets you two affection points with a food soul (so far as i’ve seen), you’d need to sell a food soul 500 drinks to complete their fondness bar and for the final rewards. 

- in conclusion, it just feels boring like it’s so inactive and slow LOL like i don’t mind waiting events but this is just stupid to me bc it is super inefficient. I wish the inventory didn’t reset everyday (wasted like thirty gems trying to stock up and lost all my inventory which is no big deal but like making duplicate drinks is difficult also when you level up it makes it difficult to unlock recipes).

When they learn that you love receiving words of affirmation, they get a little shy. On days when things aren't as good as you'd thought they'd be, or when times get so hard you don't feel like doing anything, something in their gut tells them to talk to you. It starts small, but it slowly becomes something they say often: "You're smarter than you give yourself credit for", "I think you've done well and deserve a break", "Actually, I thought you did pretty good". They'll leave little comments for you every so often to let you know how much they care, even when showing it can be difficult when it's a form of affection they're not used to conveying.

They often give you compliments because they know it makes you feel good. Not only that, but because you deserve it. Maybe they don't consider themselves articulate enough to express how much you mean to them, or maybe they're just afraid of saying something wrong. No matter what though, they let you know with simpler phrasing, something that they know won't get lost in translation.

You appreciate how much they sing your praises, but honestly? Sometimes it's a little... Let's just put it this way: sometimes it really baffles you with how loud they can be with your affirmations. They love seeing your expression at the sight of their antics, too. Doesn't make it any less embarrassing for you—in fact, they might be loud and embarrassing on purpose. They can be really creative with their compliments, like comparing you to things you wouldn't typically think of right away when you want to compliment someone. Sometimes they might pull a more "classic" line, something akin to calling you as beautiful as a mid-summer day or something? But seriously, they love you so much, why would they ever hold their tongue about it?
