glass is just anti-ash. obviously! unless we perhaps distinguish irregular-agar-esque glass with holes forming only pseudoclusters from largely–S8 solid phases with true single-cluster holes

follow density hypothesis with distinct edge phase(s)? we can distinguish 4 cell types around every diagonal edge (the 4th is irrelevant in all but B1 rules), 2 cell types around every orthogonal edge, 2 around every corner (more if considering also 90° corners); and maybe also an edge-but-adjacent-to-corner subtype.

define "ash ceiling", "chaos ceiling", "chaos floor", "glass floor" rules as those with no successors / precedessors of the same type. these might form a relatively clean division of rules! such that perhaps we can hypothesize that all ash ceiling rules' precedessors are ash-producing (implies the equivalent for glass floors, by symmetry). direct ash/glassfloor transitions do exist but perhaps only from rules with also ash successors anyway (these may be more volatile a la B35/S23 but that's finer detail).
