When 11 year old Mike Wheeler boarded the Hogwarts express with his best friend Will Byers, all he could think about was how happy being here made him.

Being a Wheeler meant his life was already laid before him: get sorted into Gryffindor, marry another pure blood witch, have kids with her and continue the family line of Gryffindors.

All his family had been Gryffindors, which meant that they were one of the most anti-Slytherin families in the whole Wizarding World.

That wasn't a problem for him though, because his best friend was going to be sorted into Hufflepuff like his brother and mother, Professor Joyce Byers. Although he could be sorted in Gryffindor, like his father, Lonnie Byers, an Auror. Lonnie had been a well known Auror but after a terrible accident, the man had become violent and abusive. Fortunately, in drunken ire, Lonnie had decided to run off into the Muggle world, never to be seen again.

While on the train ride, they met: Lucas Sinclair; a sweet Black boy, his friend Dustin Henderson; a curly-haired boy with an impish grin and a pet cat called Mews, El Hopper; a gentle and shy girl whose father, Jim Hopper, was head of the Gryffindor house; and Max Mayfield; a girl with a strong personality and hot temper that matched her red hair.

Will and Max quickly befriended each other and Mike would be lying if he said that their immediate friendship didn't make him a little jealous. So Mike would constantly try to pry Will's attention away from the girl, winning himself a snarky remark or two.

By the end of the ride, all of them had become an inseparable group of friends. Mike had found El, extremely charming but his favorite would always be Will; with his big hazel eyes, endearing bowl cut and warm demeanor, who could blame Mike.

As they entered The Great Hall, all the first years stared at the enchanted ceiling with awe and wonder, yet Mike only had eyes for the young Byers.

The Sorting began and Mike trembled with anticipation, even though he already knew what house he'd be sorted into.

"Byers, Will!" called Professor Hopper.

Will squealed with excitement and ran over to sit on the stool.

Mike gave Will a reassuring grin and suddenly someone caught his eye. A blonde young man stared at Will with a pair of cold, blue eyes. Mike didn't think much of it, since he was more interested in his best friends head being swallowed whole by the Sorting Hat.

A minute of silenced passed until the Sorting Hat yelled "Slytherin!"

Mike's eyes widened. Slytherin? How could the purest, most angelic being be sorted into the house of villains? Surely that must be some sort of mistake! Mike waited for the Sorting Hat to laugh and say, "Just kidding, Hufflepuff!" But no, no such thing happened. For a fleeting moment, Joyce's eyes met Mike's and he noticed the woman's confused state.

Will didn't seem to mind being sorted into that house, apparently, as he skipped towards his table being met with enthusiastic cheers and pats on the back. An older girl with dirty blonde hair whispered something to him and he giggled, whispering something back. He recognized the girl, her name was Robin Buckley and his sister would always complain about how annoying her jokes were and how she couldn't stand her.

The Sorting continued as if nothing were wrong, as if the Sorting Hat hadn't made a mistake! It infuriated Mike to no end how nobody was speaking up about Will. Not even his brother or mother.

Mike was sorted into Gryffindor (surprising no one), Lucas was too, El was sorted into Hufflepuff, Dustin into Ravenclaw and finally Max into Slytherin. Mike couldn't help but notice how Lucas deflated a bit when Max went to high-five Will, earning a hug from him and Robin. Billy Hargrove, a 4th year Slytherin with a nasty attitude and Max's stepbrother, smirked at them with disdain.

Mike fell asleep feeling something was terribly wrong. Will couldn't possibly be evil! He was such a nice and caring soul! Still, he was determined to not let Will being a Slytherin ruin their friendship, especially since they shared Potions and Herbology together.

Mike detested Potions and Professor Creel seemed to detest Mike even more.

"Well done, Mr. Byers! What a wonderful potion, indeed." Professor Creel patted a delighted Will on the back "10 points to Slytherin"

Max and Will cheered and Professor Creel smiled proudly. A smile that disappeared the moment he saw Mike's own potion.

"Mr Wheeler that isn't a potion, that's your mother's stew!" cackled Professor Creel "5 points from Gryffindor and Mr Sinclair that potion is going to explode any second now"

Both Lucas and Mike's potions, promptly exploded. Mike thought he heard Will snicker softly.

The months passed until finals were just around the corner. So The Party was sitting in the library studying.

"Will! Can't you tell your mom to go easy on our Transfiguration test?" asked Mike.

"No, you know how Mom is super strict about not showing favoritism to me and Jonathan." chided Will, straightening his green and silver tie.

Mike felt a pang of pain whenever he thought about the snake embroidered onto Will's cloak or the green and silver colors adorning his uniform.

"Anyways, are you going to come to the Quidditch match this Sunday? It's the final between Slytherin and Gryffindor!" Lucas interrupted popping up from behind them.

"Of course!" piped up Will "Personally, I think we're gonna win the cup this year. Billy is such a good seeker and Tommy is a menace as a Beater! Although Nancy is a brilliant keeper and Jason is a great Team Captain"

Mike really wasn't interested in Quidditch but since Will was going, he supposed he would too.

He went to the Quidditch match sticking close to El who wasn't interested in it either. They'd grown pretty close this past year and people, mainly Lucas, were insisting on how they both looked like a couple. Mike really didn't understand why they said that but he played along with it.

Max and Will sat next to each other laughing and cheering their team on, booing whenever Gryffindor scored and clapping when Tommy took down Gryffindor's Chaser with a Bludgeon to the ribs.

Mike's insides burned with jealousy. It was obvious Will had found a new best friend in Max but hopefully that wouldn't mean he'd stop wanting to be Mike's best friend.

gravity falls au hcs:

so. will and el are the mystery twins. we been knew

visiting hop in gravity falls, oregon, for the summer of course

the rest of the party happens to have summer jobs at the mystery shack

(why hopper hired them all, he will never know. to this day, it is still one of the best and worst things he's ever done)

i think that the other party members (max, mike, lucas, and dustin) have a little mystery club. a gang, if you will

i think they have journal 3 and they give will and el a brief evaluation before inviting them in to the club

when will and el have their first supernatural encounter and end up defeating the gnomes with a leafblower, the party knows that they're perfect for their club

will and el are just. stunned. to hear about all the stuff that goes down in gravity falls

they love the lore and yeah they might've just fought off a shit ton of gnomes but WOAH there are that many other cool things here too??

of course they have to avoid the watchful eye of hopper

but their friends and fellow employees steve and robin (wendy and soos respectively) help them sneak around and figure things out

the party lets will and el borrow journal 3 to look over

when el sees the page about vampires, she's immediately convinced that mike is one

and while will waves it off and says that that's ridiculous, he can't help but wonder as well

el takes it upon herself to ask max who just laughs and says that they're explored that idea many times, but it doesn't seem to be true

the golf cart is the main form of transport for the party

you're probably wondering, how on earth do six people fit in a golf cart??

well, easy enough answer there: lucas and max in the front, el and will in the back, mike hanging on the side, and dustin on top

they strap dustin in with bungee cords because they've had a few accidents too many

i think max is able to send bill cypher back into oblivion with just one dirty look

bill cypher may be like a demon of multiple worlds, but he has other worlds he can take over that don't involve the wrath of max

el plays matchmaker just like mabel does, but she gets max involved in it too

these girls are the finest matchmakers in all of gravity falls

well. until it came to mike and will

they tried several times to get those two together but god they were both so helpless, el and max just gave up eventually

MIKE FELL FIRST AND MIKE FELL HARDER.

this cute little nerdy boy obsessed with all the cryptids?? who keeps drawing them as they fight them all summer and adding more illustrations to the journal?? has his heart.

will spends most of his summer learning more about this stuff and getting excited about it

he does. think about mike. maybe just a bit

but he often tries to push those thoughts aside bc there's no way mike would like him back AND he has monsters to focus on

until one day lucas casually asks will how he and mike are doing and will is like ????

lucas thought they were dating

okay maybe he knew they weren't and just wanted to stir the pot but still it was enough to make will open his eyes

mike meanwhile has finally broken down and gone to the girls for advice

to which he is greeted with both enthusiasm and a speech of "if you EVER hurt MY BROTHER..."

but yeah. mike ends up asking will out finally

on pioneer day as well, mike asked will if he would go out with him or if he'd have to settle for marrying a woodpecker

will happily agreed

but anyway

uh

lucas punches a pterodactyl in the face

i could go on and on but that's the limit of my brain atm. i love gravity falls. i love stranger things. this was lovely to think about

hogwarts au hcs:

ok so sorting the party into their houses is difficult as fuck. i can honestly see a valid argument of putting the party members in almost any house, and i'm totally here for that discussion, but for this hc set, these are the houses i'm putting them in:

mike: slytherin, will: gryffindor, dustin: ravenclaw, lucas: hufflepuff, max: slytherin, el: gryffindor

dustin is muggle born but god that does not stop him from learning and absorbing everything he can about the wizarding world

el has a cat, mike, lucas, max, and will have owls, and dustin has a toad

the toad's name is scribbles

idk why, it just is

also lucas and will play quidditch!! lucas is a keeper and will is a chaser

fred and george did not pass the maurauder's map to harry. they passed it to max and will

max and will have not told a soul that they have it, but they use it to their advantage and love it

mike and el have a competition of collecting chocolate frog cards

who has the most, the rarest ones, the most diverse set, etc

el is winning btw

lucas thinks the toothpaste every flavor bean tastes good

they all have some wonderful wizarding talents as well

as i said before, will and lucas are on the quidditch team, so they're good at that

lucas is also great in care of magical creatures

he loves every single one of those animals and knows just how to calm them and care for them

el has a real knack for herbology!!

she actually wants to come back and teach it after she graduates

el also. wants a pet mandrake

dustin is a potions MASTER

he learns all these tricks and does them so well that he could practically write a second edition of the half-blood prince's book

mike is good at charms!

he loves all those little helpful spells that just make life easier, ya know

those are the best

max is FANTASTIC at transfiguration

she can turn anything into. anything

in fact max has this little business (that might not be entirely safe or legal for her to do by wizarding standards, but she does it anyway)

she helps transfigure body parts of dysphoric trans hogwarts students

shh don't tell anyone

mike got the most O.W.L.s.

no one knows how, but he did

also max once locked umbridge in the room of requirement

"it was what i required at that time! it wasn't my fault, i swear!"

oh you know how i said dustin has a toad scribbles

he also is in the toad choir at hogwarts

he and scribbles both have voices of angels

when they're old enough, lucas and el get put as head boy and head girl

will is a prefect

mike flirting with him shamelessly and will trying to stay professional but he can't help but melt at his boyfriend's dumb little attempts to catch him off guard

sometimes he gets so flustered from mike's flirting that he can't remember the password to the common room and he has to wait for someone else to come back to help him

setting them in the year of triwizard tournament rn

lucas is the hogwarts champion!!!!!! bc who tf else i mean come on he's perfect

will drawing banners for lucas and mike charming them to animate

Everyone wants byler fake dating aus but there's like no fics for them 🤨 we need to band together and write more byler fake dating aus. Also the Mike thinks they're dating and Will has no idea fake dating aus are the best.

Another thing I think is good is when Ted Wheeler is non homophobic and thinks Mike and Will are dating and have been since they were 12. We need more of those too.

for the cinephile byler truthers. i made the party’s modern au letterboxd accounts

in my head mike wheeler is the film bro cinephile of the party. hes a big brad pitt fan and fincher is his favorite director if you even care.. dirty dancing would be in his top 4 if he was honest. he went to see dune cause hes a scifi nerd, ended up hating it so much and complained about it to will but still gave it 2 stars cause it was pretty. did leave a very mean review. very critical rater but mostly leaves high ratings because he just doesn’t watch things he doesnt wanna see.

alternative movies i considered putting: pulp fiction (5 stars), the killer (1 star), se7en (5 stars), across the spiderverse (5 stars), nope (5 stars) , the batman 2022 (4 stars), once upon a time in hollywood (5 stars), inglorious basterds (5 stars), the matrix (half a star)

the thing is so good and he has a poster of it on his wall in canon so it felt right. it just feels wrong not to do ghostbusters (plus its one of my favorite movies…) and yall need to hear me out on brokeback 😭😭😭 ur telling me he wouldnt bawl his eyes out??? ur wrong. will byers is a jake gyllenhaal lover. he watches dirty dancing a lot for mike, and loves ghibli movies a lot. he cried during rain man. honest rater but doesnt take it too seriously, mostly 4/5 star ratings

rogue one because lucas has taste. its the best star wars movie, if u care. he would love how fun and goofy ghostbusters 2 is. in my head Wes Anderson is like the party’s claimed director and they all watch his movies together and do marathons because the weirdness, comedy, and emotional commentary is a perfect mix for them. so. bottle rocket. lucas’ favorite wes anderson is the grand budapest hotel if u wanted to know. he rates things pretty highly and isn’t super critical.

likes making lucas watch gone girl on valentines day and telling him shes gonna do that to him next time he annoys her. v for vendetta is her favorite romance movie and shes a big marvel fan (in a cool way. kind of .) but thor ragnarok is probably one of her fav marvels, along with spiderman far from home and iron man. i just know she watches Casino Royale and decided she hated James Bond and then ended up watching all the Daniel Craig Bonds with Mike and loved Skyfall so much. the song is on her playlist and she did cry after No Time To Die.

also a bit of a film nerd. i considered giving him a star wars and i know in my heart he’d probably have empire somewhere in his top 4. but star wars is lame and i wanted to give him se7en so he fucking gets se7en. he knows john wick is objectively dumb but he doesnt care hes just here for a good time. the party probably watched saltburn together and all fucking hated it. I just know hes a kurosawa nerd and always goes when the local theatres do very rare special showings of his movies.

she likes movies that make her feel all warm and fuzzy and hopeful. i wanted to give her breakfast club, but i think she’d honestly like sixteen candles more (even though breakfast club’s better). she cried at almost every movie in her top 4 and makes max rewatch juno with her like once a month. she gives most movies 5 stars unless she really hates them, and loves any movie thats fun to watch, even if its bad. she likes movies with pretty girls and fun colors.

the thing i love about stranger things is even though i won't deny it's overrated and objectively not the best show, I've missed being a part of a fandom that's so big it consumes you since harry potter was ruined for me. and i know everyone's super frustrated right now because of the content drought but as someone who somehow stumbled into this fandom during the drought i barely feel it. there's unlimited fucking content. im mutuals with these people i look up to so fucking much who make the best fanart and write the best fics and i see them shitposting on tumblr like they didn't fucking destroy me with their work. i'll be talking to a random person in the tag and we'll start geeking out over our mutual love for the same hyperspecific fanfiction. im suddenly into crazy aus and things so peripherally related to the canon it's ridiculous but it's SO fun because we're in it together?! i've missed the energy of going insane crazy together with SO many other people with the theorizing and inside jokes and found family headcanons to the point we've completely devolved from the little material canon gives us in some cases (*cough* willel supremacy *cough*) and making these characters our entire personalities and that feeling of being a part of fandom history you know? and this is a show EVERYONE knows about i can't go into any other fandom without finding byler aus lmao and im invested in stupid things like the history of the fandom tag and subfandoms of subfandoms and blue and yellow and i've been in decently big fandoms before (pjo, she ra, the owl house, glee, the general Sapphic Media fandom because we all consume all the same things lmao) but nothing as huge and living and breathing and active as this since harry potter before. it's all-consuming and has me giggling and grinning throughout the day and im never bored and i love every minute of it

The Byler fandom is perhaps one of the dullest fandoms I’ve been in. We just rely on analysis posts, no one ever thinks about creating original content, and anyone with an AU is considered “cringe” or just ignored. Maybe if we had more artists, more headcanons (why are so many bylers threatened by headcanons that don’t match their version of the character in their head?) and more people willing to create alternative content we’d be more chill, because at this point people are just going to continue to be disappointed more and more, and even after we become canon we will fizzle out because we have analysis to do, no-one to keep it alive.

Why is Hannibal still alive? Why is the Harry Potter fandom still… well… a thing? (Screw jkr) Even the Dirk Gently fandom creates more original content than us and it’s like 3 people! It’s because they take the characters and give them life in AUs, in collabs, in Etsy merch, unlike us bylers who don’t seem to understand that creativity and new ideas is what propels a fandom.

Basically: the Byler fandom will die out even if we are canon, even if it changes TV queer rep forever, unless we can continue to create for it.

I agree that we could be more open/accepting of AUs.

However, I think the reason we aren't focused on them right now, and we are so focused on analysis is, our ship actually DOES have a really good chance to be endgame. Like, I'm not familiar with the other fandoms you mentioned really, but are the most popular ships for them canon? I don't think so for HP (Drarry?). So in order for people to ship it, they have to be more accepting and creative with AUs.

Anyways, not sure if i'm just spouting nonsense, but short-term I think we're fine to focus on analysis. Long-term we can worry more about other stuff, once we know we're right.
