King Arthur sets out to keep his promise to the spirit of the Druid boy by repealing his father's ban on magic. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done, for reasons including but not limited to the following:

(1) He can't change the law until he understands magic better, but no sorcerer is willing to explain magic to him until he changes the law;

(2) The sorcerers all have some strange obsession with Merlin, which is awakening all sorts of feelings in Arthur that he really doesn't fancy examining too closely;

(3) He is starting to feel like the butt of some Druid-population-wide inside joke involving the mysterious phenomenon called Emrys; and

(4) Oh yeah, Morgana is still trying to kill him.

Thus he embarks on a journey of discovery, diplomacy, accountability, and self-improvement, and maybe even falls in love along the way.

made this rec list just for the excuse to rec this fic tbh, havent stopped thinking about since i read it the other week. summary: Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, and the ways they haunt each other and the people they left behind.

i loveee vaguely angsty ~literary~ refs in my fic and this one got me with that wuthering heights quote (that one, you know the one) in the summary. also beautiful writing (Dust-motes tizzy in the slatted sunbeams, bright and wild as campfire sparks. The questionmark shape of Tonks's waist and hip in her half-sprawled sleeping posture have become so familiar over these last weeks that desire no longer surges through him at the sight. Her aura of flyaway hairs is whitegold and brilliant in the sunbeams, like her spirit has soaked through the package of her body, a little, in the night.)

— and amazing concepts and ideas. without spoiling too much, there are certain story elements about non-narratively told / retrospective canon-compliant remadora that always get me, and these ones are particularly well done.

(also, anyone who writes both remadora and wolfstar with such love automatically gets inducted into my hall of favorite people forever full stop end of story <3)

anyway, here’s a rec for more vaguely angsty autumn mood remadora, vignette-style. quotes under read more, along with the blank bingo board:

It's been this way for weeks—late September, when she'd fallen asleep next to him, pale dawn blooming in his bedroom. A gentle entanglement of their wrists and ankles. Waking, hours later, the noon light heavy and her brain thick with sleep. Visions of hard sex in the unmade bed, his sleeping arm draped over her hip; the fever-rush of arousal following.

The mood this year, as this header photo demonstrates, was Le Tired. Just physically and emotionally slogging along. Brain stuck on perpetual static. A pull-the-covers-over-my-head sort of year. I read a few books, watched a lot of shows, found new songs to listen to on repeat, and spent way too much time futzing around on Tumblr.

But that's not what this post is about! This is to remind myself that I did accomplish writer-ly things this year, even if it didn't feel like it sometimes. So here's my 2023 Fandom Year in Review:

Most of the time, it’s easy for Harry to forget that Draco Malfoy is his next-door neighbour—until the night Malfoy seemingly goes round the twist in his back garden. Of course Harry has to investigate. A birthday gift for @caroll-in.

A string of nearly-insufferable dinner parties has made Draco acquainted with Harry Potter’s completely insufferable, social-climbing boyfriend. But tonight it seems like Potter’s finally had enough, and Draco’s more than happy to watch it all play out from across the table.

The firefighters of the 118 decide to give Bobby a turn at pranking them after seeing how disappointed he was to be left out. And since two heads are better than one, why not three? Or four? If only they could figure out who's pranking and who isn't, and who the intended victim is. It's all in good fun, though—as long as everyone is too distracted to notice that Buck and Eddie keep sneaking off alone.

I had a good time doodling some Halloween treats for Inbox Trick-or-Treating. I hope it will become an annual Tumblr event! Thanks to the folks who rang my doorbell that night and the other blogs who gave out treats.

Listen, her pinned post on Tumblr alone is incredible. Look at that organization! So easy to find anything you could want to peruse on a given day! Then...the meta?? The STATS? Okay the stats meta blows my mind because I'm nerdy enough to like stat talk but allergic enough to math to have 0 comprehension of numbers. Rec because - Get your spooktober on! Fairy tales! Dark/dangerous/passionate and scary. Last year I recced The Lost World for Snarry Halloween. This year I get to rec the long version! Gosh. PI has been spoiling Snape fandom this year. But this is probably my favorite because I am a sucker for scary fairytales. This one also has a complex plot which feels like an action movie. Action doesn't normally look good in text like it does on visual media but in this fic the action is really vivid and immersive.

He finally came to his senses when a Moontrimmer actually splintered in half between his legs. His arms and back throbbed despite Cushioning Charms. His hands were scraped. Sweat ran down the back of his neck. As he stood there trying to reason away the cold dread in his stomach, he could practically hear the verdict spoken in a soft, mocking voice.

Not a defective broom, you imbecile. A defective Potter.

I've been doing all the spooky things as we get closer to Halloween. Pumpkins? Check. Seasonal soup? Check. Scary movies? Check. Leggings and sweater? Check Check. Now I can check off spooky fics from my fall fun list too!

In my opinion, there's no one who does a Halloween fic better than @corvuscrowned. Whether you're looking for suspenseful or scary, Crow has you covered. I immensely enjoyed @hp-fearfest last year, and Crow's own writing was a large part of why. I thought for this year, I'd let him share what's making him happy in the world of horror! Hello to all of you lovely ghouls, gaunts, and ghosties! I’m so thrilled to be able to hang out at the library during this spookiest of seasons, and I want to thank the Librarian for letting me make my status as The Horror Guy everyone’s problem!! Horror has been my lifeblood since I was young, and it’s been absolutely incredible to find so many explorations of the genre in the drarry fandom. I had such a blast co-running @hp-fearfest with my co-mod and eternal soulmate @m0srael, who has carried on the torch this year with a new group of incredible mods. I absolutely recommend checking out the fest collections, but I wanted to share a few horror fics that were written outside of the fest as well. 

Horror movies are my one true love, but I’ve always found short horror films to be immeasurably scarier. So instead of reccing one longer horror fic, I wanted to share a few short fics that use brevity to their advantage and let the reader’s mind fill in the blanks with the stuff of absolute nightmares.

Your Mind, A Jar by @floydig (473 words, not rated)

Instead of being sentenced to Azkaban, Draco is sent on a deep space exploration to pay for his war crimes. Or is he?

I am a huge fan of floydig’s writing, and have been from my early days in fandom – their prose is brutally sparse in the best of ways, and many of their fics have an artfully haunting quality that’s perfectly suited for horror. In fact, their fic Walk Right Through Me was the first drarry horror I ever read, and was what inspired me to try my hand at bringing horror into my fics.

But today I want to talk about something even shorter. At 473 words, you might think Your Mind, A Jar is a short fic - but the story it encapsulates is terrifying because it is utterly limitless. Immersive, unsettling, and characterized by Floyd’s usual dark humor, Your Mind, A Jar is the first space fic I’ve ever read, and might be the last I ever need to – because I’ll be thinking (and shuddering) about it for a long, long, long time. 

Lateralus by @shiftylinguini (2,108 words, rated T)

The world after the war was so big, and so untamed. Magic spilled out of every corner, creatures never seen before watching from nooks that never used to exist. There were colours in the air, in the morning dew drops on the leaves―indescribable, and new. Otherworldly, and pulled from a spectrum that shouldn't be visible in their world.

Atmosphere is so important to horror, and it’s one of many things that makes Lateralus work so well. The fic lives in an unsettling, suspenseful space that I simultaneously want to escape immediately and live in forever. I sometimes prefer to understand the bare minimum in horror – just enough to have a feel for what’s going on, like I’m reaching out in the darkness for something I know is there, but can’t quite see. Shifty nails this. I don’t fully understand how we’ve found Draco and Harry where they are – passing by each other in the darkness, communicating only in echoes and refractions – and I don’t need to. That’s where the terror comes from.

One of my favorite things about Lateralus is that, despite being eerie and unsettling, it doesn’t lose the romance. That’s what makes it so much more heartbreaking, so much more compelling, and absolutely worth a read.

Triptych by @theartfuldodger (1,821 words, rated M)

One afternoon, a feather emerges, marring already-scarred skin. But what other problems lie unnoticed beneath the surface?

Body horror isn’t for everyone, but that’s not going to stop me from trying to convince everyone to give it a try! If you have even the faintest of interests, Triptych should absolutely be your entry point. This fic takes the veela trope and brings it to its most visceral core, with needling feathers, scaly skin, and the relentless intrusion of wings. The dynamic between Draco and Harry is deliciously dysfunctional, and the weight of inheritance and choicelessness is as unsettling as the beautifully fucked up descriptions of Draco’s transformation. Theartfulldodger’s choice to write this fic in first person present was perfect – it puts us in such an immediate proximity to Draco’s experiences that we feel everything alongside him, from his terrifyingly changing body to his unsettling relationship with Harry.

I first read this fic a year ago, and I think it’s still one of the drarry fics that pops into my mind the most often – the images and tone are crafted so powerfully that they’re nearly impossible to forget. To me, that’s what makes good horror.

Making A Family Makes A Home by @m0srael (2,433 words, rated T)

Harry and Draco have been dating for years, but Draco still won’t move in to Harry’s place. Is it a case of cold feet, or cold something else?

I have to disclose my bias here. In addition to being one of my earliest and most beloved fandom friends, Mose was my co-mod for Fearfest last year, and has my entire spooky heart in their hands. But I think even if I’d never met Mose, Making A Family Makes A Home would still be one of my favorite horror fics of all time, because it is just. So. Fun.

Not everyone looks for fun in their horror, but I’m someone who really enjoys an indulgently gross, slightly zany interpretation of the genre, which is the note Mose’s fic hits perfectly. I’d say it’s best to go into this one blind, and be prepared for a wild ride. This fic feels like every campy classic 80’s horror movie that I love in the best of ways – it absolutely goes there, and I’m so happy that it does.

It’s been such a joy to reread my favs and share these fics, and I’m so appreciative I got the opportunity to do so. SUCH a creative unique fic - love it when authors take their deep IRL expertise and weave it into the canon HP verse. as the author put it, for anyone curious about what a nonmagical doctor sounds like writing about what they imagine magical medicine is like, day in and day out.

“It’s Puddlemere versus the Cannons tonight. The cup final.” Pye stopped mid-stride and mid-thought, shoulders seeming to weep under the weight of realisation. “Oh no,” he almost whispered. “Oh yes,” Marge glowered, “and you’re alone tonight, Rupert is off sick.” “Good heavens,” Pye whimpered, his coffee seeming to shrink in his hand, both in potency and relevance. In the waiting room behind him, three blokes hurricaned in chanting “CANNONS, CANNONS, CANNONS,” their unconscious friend slumped and dragged between them. “You know how it is, Pye,” Marge turned and shuffled back to validate the young witch’s national insurance card. Speaking over her shoulder, she finished, “never a dull moment at Mungo’s.”

hawa paani ka badlaav hona chahiye—A change in atmosphere is often needed to improve one's health or state of mind. Literally, a change in the winds, and the water. Parvati quoted that saying to us one evening last month, suggesting that it would be good for Cho and me. My parents knew that I had been with Cho for just over a year then, and welcomed her to stay with us after the Battle … Cho actually looked interested at the idea and suggested our home countries for a month each. And so, we’re currently visiting Mumbai first, staying in a Muggle area at my Muggle maushi’s place, in July—during the monsoon season.

HP Rec Fest, Day 26

As someone who loves clever and unexpected endings, I’m very excited for this @hprecfest prompt and can’t wait to see everyone’s recs. My first instinct was to (yet again) mention the brilliant And Save Me From Bloody Men bc I dream about that immaculate, awe-inspiring open ending every now and then. But since I’ve already recced it for the fest, I’m making this a special homage to open/ambiguous endings - not everyone’s cup of tea but certainly mine! We have so many brilliant HP fics with open endings it was hard to pick, but I’m going for two short reads that I personally love and often reread. They are somber, angsty, intriguing and atmospheric, and will definitely take your breath away.

The Other Cottage by @corvuscrowned (T, 6.5k)

If Pansy wasn’t shagging Ginny Weasley, Draco would never have been dragged to Luna’s ridiculous Halloween party in the first place - meaning he wouldn't be sitting in the corner of the room with Harry Potter all night.

crow usually kills me with all their endings (see also: The Seventh Life and An Emerald in the Sky, ruined me so so good) but I wanna take a sec to scream about this brilliant yet somehow underrated fic, spooky af and with a truly mind-blowing ending. crow nails the mysterious vibe, the dynamics and the anticipation so well that I could feel the tension in my heartbeat. their compelling narrative will immediately lure you into a creepy & sweet atmosphere that feels really refreshing for this genre. I reread this fic every Halloween season and highly recommend it to anyone who loves an intriguing, surprising and well-paced dark-ish tale.

“How much this time?” Harry asks, the alcohol slowing his words. The boy beside him breathes a warm sound, inviting and soft. “Ten sickles for an hour.”

oh the way I gasped reading that last line! this fic is only 500 words but trust me when I say it hits you hard and fast - so sexy, so poignant, so effective 🤯 there’s a delicious urgency about the smut that immediately tells you there’s something deeper running underneath but you can’t quite put your finger on it until the very end. this is hot, angsty and inevitable in a way that makes my heart ache for Harry, for them. one of my all-time fave microfics!
