My introduction to the Marauders era as a teenager was HP:POA (obviously) but my (re-)introduction to the Marauders as an adult was All the Young Dudes.

I cannot emphasize enough how even though I read HP first I often feel like I’m writing ATYD AUs.

Not set in the same universe? Doesn’t matter.

No care home!Remus? Still counts.

Wolfstar aren’t even the main characters? Don’t care, MKB invented Hogwarts.

Non-magic AU? Doesn’t matter, still hers.

Thinking about Remus Lupin

A recent post on reddit and talking with someone else brought to mind how much I have grown to dislike Remus compared to the adoration I'd had for him as a child. I still like him quite a bit but I don't see him through the same rose colored glasses that I did before and I find myself lingering on his motivations during third year more and more.

Warning: this is mostly my own thoughts and speculation that I am attempting to put down in a coherent manner. We are not given enough information on Remus to say for sure about a lot of this stuff. I am interested to see what others think in regards to what I put here.

Remus accepts his position at Hogwarts knowing Sirius will show up there. It's not a large leap to assume that he might even worry Sirius might try to personally target him on top of Harry, too, since he was a friend during that time. Even after Sirius makes it into the Gryffindor common room and all the way up to the boys' dormitory where Harry, Ron, and them sleep, he never tells Dumbledore that Sirius is an animagus. From a talk near the end of the book we know this is because Remus feared upsetting Dumbledore, but is that really the only reason why?

I think Remus was hoping to get revenge against Sirius if he ran across him. And, too, I wonder if that isn't a large reason as to why he agreed to teach Harry the patronus charm.

Just a week or so ago I had held the opinion that it was the better decision for Remus to remain professional in regards to his friend's son but given my recent thoughts I wonder if it wasn't really in an attempt to draw Sirius out of hiding that Remus starts these lessons. After all, Remus never reached out before this point. There's a lot of theories as to why this is: did he not know where Harry was? That's quite possible, but if that's the case why wouldn't he ask Dumbledore to give an eleven year old Harry a message for him if he truly cared, even just to say "I am an old friend of your parent's, if you want to know anything of them I can tell you"? Too many questions, not enough canon evidence.

Did Remus really care for Harry at all? I'm sure he did to an extent, but so many paint him as this quasi-parental/uncle figure and even I myself saw him as such until recently. After their experience together third year, Remus would know Harry well enough to realize that his reaching out wouldn't be rejected if he cared to do so, and yet we never see anything of the sort. They are still friendly with each other, but Remus seems to hold himself back for some reason, and the only thing we can really go off of is speculation since it's not given to us in a straight answer.

I think Remus decided to teach Harry the patronus charm for four reasons:

1. Guilt. Sure, he's not the reason the dementors are there, but if Remus had decided to go to Dumbledore or even the ministry and reveal the fact that Sirius was an animagus at any point I'm sure their finding of him would have been a lot quicker and the dementors would no longer reside at the school to bother Harry.

2. It allowed him to become closer to Harry in a more personalized mentor-student relationship that they otherwise most likely would not have been able to achieve in class.

3. Protection! This keeps Harry in a safe space that Remus himself can guard and ensure Sirius can't harm him in.

4. Bait. These lessons put at least one assumed target of Sirius' in a location where they were almost alone and almost unguarded.

Yes, we know Sirius didn't actually do all of what Peter framed him for, but we and Remus at that point certainly believe it to be the truth. Is it cowardice or bravery that stays Remus' tongue? Even after Ron wakes to Sirius standing over him in the dead of night Remus still stays quiet.

Imagine what this actually implies for a moment. What if Sirius had actually been the friend betraying mass murderer he was framed as? He would have gotten into the dormitory and most likely made quick work of Harry and them. Was Remus okay with kids being murdered, just trying to bury his head in the sand and wait it out, or just ridiculously negligent?

I understand that at this point HP was still very much a kid's series but the darker undertones shouldn't be ignored because of that, IMO. And the implications of what Remus was willing to sit by and potentially watch Sirius do are staggering.

don’t think about...

don’t think about how james potter and lily evans were only 21 years old when they were killed.

don’t think about how sirius was the same age when he went to azkaban, barely an adult.

don’t think about sirius watching peter kill innocent muggles and sobbing in the middle of a crowded street because god damn it enough people have already died why did this happen to good poeple -and certainly don’t think of how people interpreted it as him laughing like a maniac instead.

don’t think about sirius begging the potters’ to make peter their secret-keeper because ‘that’s more discreet and he would never betray us, we’re all like brothers!’.

and don’t think about sirius regretting that decision every day for twelve years in azkaban.

and most importantly, do not think about 21-year-old remus lupin hearing the news that james and lily have been murdered, and losing composure, just to hear moments later that peter was killed as well, and it was all sirius black’s fault.

do not think about remus crying out desperately for the man that he thought he knew -the one that would never betray james potter even if his life was on the line- and questioning everything he ever heard leave sirius black’s mouth.

just don’t do it.

or you’ll end up sobbing like i was just thinking about it.

how is it that Lupin’s worst fear was revealed to a bunch of students to be the full moon and literally none of them guessed that he was a werewolf except for hermione? Damn I guess not taking math/science/English etc really does a number on them
