"不可同日而语" 的意思是不能放在同一个时间谈论, 用来比喻差别很大, 不能放在一起比较。例如: 通信技术进步太快了, 过去跟现在不可同日而语。

"不可同日而语", literally "(two things) cannot be mentioned in the same breath", is used metaphorically to mean that there is no comparison between two people or two things becaus of the significant difference. For instance, in terms of science and technology, there is no comparision between the past and the present.

Alright so my Press planned a meet up, and one of the people came is a friend who lives in Beijing most of the year and was in North America anyway. She knows I love danmei so she made me one heck of an offer: if I put together a Taobao shopping list, she'd be my danmei mule - order it for me and carry the stuff to the US so I could pay just cost, no mark up or shipping.

Needless to say I jumped on this like whoa and asked for more than she was physically capable of bringing me. 🤣 (I was very clear she could say "no" whenever, and she did.) As it is she went so fricken above and beyond...

Top to bottom, it's vol. 1 of the Global Examination manhua, a vol. of Daomu Biji, I Ship My Rival x Me, the TGCF revision (wanting that like whoa is what triggered all this), Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine, Mo Du, Little Mushroom, The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua, and the Global Examination special edition (I had. No idea this one would be this big. Oops.)

There are so many extras. So many. I laid everything out on my bed last night and in my head I just kinda flopped mentally atop it all and basked like a content cat, lmao.

All this adds to my existing collection (SVSSS in traditional, MDZS vol. 1 to 3 in traditional, TGCF vol. 1 to 4 in traditional, Thousand Autumns, Golden Stage, Guardian, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, TGCF manhua vol. 1 and 2, and The Husky and His White Cat Shizun vol. 1 to 3).

Anyway, now goals are to REALLY step up getting "reading ready" on my studying. Part of why I got I Ship My Rival x Me (...outside of "the manhua releases too slow and I want to know what happens") is I thought something modern and fluffy would hopefully be a bit simpler for me to read? And it's also a lot shorter than the others. So, after I read all the manhua (I'm way behind on posting TGCF vol. 1 cause this summer is kicking my ass, but I've read about half of it) I'm gonna sit my ass down with ISMM and see if just maybe I can't make my way through an actual damn book, and then if I can, use the vocabulary building that'll surely result in to springboard me into some other book (I'd been thinking Thousand Autumns but after seeing that post about "distinct character usage" stats for cnovels, uh, maybe not Thousand Autumns lmao, idk, I could try Fourteenth Year of Chenghua, that might be a "simpler" choice for historical vocabulary building but their both Meng Xi Shi so they might both be hard...maybe I should just do TGCF, heck knows I know the story which always helps...sorry, I'm just babbling cause I'm excited about my books and procrastinating taking a shower 🤣🤣🤣)

Two weeks of speedrunning Memrise community courses later, I certainly feel like I am making the most of this!! (There was a day where I did it shortly before midnight and didn't manage to finish going through all my courses, that's why the 3 at the top only have a 4-day streak)

I found a way to download these and imperfectly import them into Anki, so I did that with the Zhuyin/Bopomofo course once I had finished it. Today I'll do the same with the Chengyu course since I just finished it as well, and then I'll have to fiddle with those cards a bit before they're usable.

It feels weird to know these could be taken away from me any day without warning, but at least I am backing up the ones I finish? The IPA one probably won't take me that much longer, and perhaps I'll manage the shorter Polish course as well.

As for anything else, I'm counting on a bunch of people who are trying to transfer as many Memrise courses as possible to other websites. Fingers crossed that'll work out.

Hi! I have been learning Chinese for 8 months now, and even though I'm doing okay on HSK3 level, i feel like I'm in need of more content for this level that i can consume and practice. A lot of the shows and tv programs are still too difficult for me and i only understand around 40% of words (at most 😆).

I already watched everything on YouTube channels like Mandarin Click or Mandarin Corner etc, but in general i cant find that much for low levels. Do you happen to know where I could find some more? It could be texts, stories or videos, just below HSK4.

First of all, great progress!

I would continue just watching some programs for the exposure, even if you can't quite keep up yet.

Aside from apps and standard learning material (which I assume you already have resources for), I think for HSK 3 which I assume is beginner/intermediate, you might just have to bite the bullet and follow along with elementary school content, even if it's boring.

You can probably also find children's programming on Bilibili. I gave a rec in this ask of some Chinese cartoons to check out. Make sure to check out any recs in the notes as well!

This playlist with videos aimed toward Chinese 1st graders. It is a little dry, but the teacher speaks clearly and fairly slowly and from the first few minutes, I think it should at least be good listening practice as well as reading practice with anything visual. A lot of the first videos go over things you should already know since the videos are aimed at teaching Chinese children to read, so you may just want to skip to part 43, 课文1, where the videos will begin class readings of elementary texts.

Check out this site for scans of pages from the Ministry of Education's textbooks. The link should go straight to the page for first grade, but if you find that too easy, the menu across the top of the page goes up to 6th grade. There are just one or two years' books for each grade, I think (you'll have to click around a look). The textbooks contain short stories with pinyin guides.

This youtube channel has Chinese nursery rhymes if you don't mind the ugly ass art

Generally speaking, I think after HSK3/HSK4 is where your language skills will really see improvement so when you're still starting out there's not as much material because that's when it's expected that you just have your head stuck in a textbook.

You might find it useful to give yourself some longer term projects or challenges; translation is a good way to really spend some time thinking about the language, so it might help to find a song you really like and try translating it line by line with a dictionary. Pick a pop ballad or something that sounds cute and simple because other genres like gufeng will probably be too difficult. Later, when your language skills have improved some more, you can try translating the same song again and see if you decide to make any different translation choices based on new insights.

我又要努力回答，又要答的与众不同。

二十六岁的我被问爱情是什么，我好像还没有答案。不过我知道，「爱」和「爱上」是两件事。「爱上」只需要一瞬间，一个笑话，一通简讯，一件白衬衫。「爱」则是没有终点的考验，是要永远做帮助关系发展下去的选择，即使万分委屈或感到从未有过的卑微。

若是混淆「爱」和「爱上」，就会在遭遇爱情的考验时对「爱」产生怀疑。

怀疑的结果可能是选择去追求一次又一次的「爱上」，追求肾上腺素被不同的人刺激。这样自尊心会很开心吧，积累了丰富的恋爱谈资，你看老娘又甩了一个。

或者变得焦虑，要求伴侣枕戈待旦，随时准备好证明爱有多真，再下次又必须要更加码，到了伴侣撑不住的投降的那天，才发现关系早就变质了。一个努力收集不被爱的证据的人，不安感多么至死不渝的表白也填不满。

又或者完全放弃恋爱了，骗自己真的不想再要亲密关系了，和姐妹说好希望我是同性恋啊，男人蠢到真的没救了。震动棒都买了吗，解放双手，自给自足。我真的不用男人啊。我自己一个人就很好。我在用实际行动支持女权主义了。

再来还可以对记忆进行艺术加工，「我和前男友在一起的时候，他从来都不关手机静音，半夜也接我电话！」。「我年轻的时候啊，吃糠咽菜窝窝头，比现在的大鱼大肉香百倍！」。老人回忆过去的美好，是在生命终点逼近之前，再多幸福一点。情人回忆过去的美好，是生怕手边的人先宣告爱情死亡，提前造好治疗心碎的迷药。

「爱」是什么？可能，是有那么多「不爱」的选择，也交出脆弱的心，努力去爱吧。

「爱上」只需要一瞬间，行星对了角度，玫瑰数到爱的那瓣，「阳光很好，你走过我身旁」。「爱」，哎，那个，唉，我真的爱你啦，我会好好爱你的。

萝卜's Essential Chinese Characters #1

大家好！

When spending time in China, there were several characters/words that I wasn't familiar with (as an ~HSK4 learner) yet seemed to pop up everywhere! Being so prevalent, I tried to take note of them and now can share them with you all over a series of posts! If you're planning to visit China, I hope you follow along and find these posts useful :)

Today's character is: 区 (qū)!

区, meaning "district", "area", "region", etc, can be found in a multitude of contexts. Some explicit examples from my experience are:

小区 (xiǎoqū) – home community, neighborhood. The apartment complexes/condos where many citizens live are usually in the form of several high-rises built around a central recreation/park area, sometimes also with a school, markets, restaurants, etc all right downstairs! Collectively, this living space is known as a 小区. You can find one of my pictures of a 小区 below!!

凉菜区 (liáng cài qū) – literally “cold dish area” aka where the cold dishes are located in a restaurant

NFC区 (NFC qū) – “near-field communication zone” aka where you should tap your card/phone to transfer information such as payment or identification

景区 (jǐngqū) – scenic area, related to the similar term 景点 (jǐngdiǎn) meaning “scenic point”

Other examples:

区号 (qūhào) – area code (literally “area number”)

城区 (chéngqū) – city district, similar to 市区 (shìqū) meaning “urban district” or “downtown”

地区 (dìqū) – local, regional, area; when used as a suffix to a city name, means “prefecture” or “county”

时区 (shíqū) – time zone

The online HSK(K) 4 exam

Today I wrote my HSK4 and HSKK 4 exams, which as it turns out are 2 separate exams with 2 separate certificates and doing badly on one of them doesn't affect the other ones score as I'm told.

Since I was left feeling absolutely out of my depth in the beginning, I decided to write about my experience with doing the HSK(K) 4 exams online!

There were a few options for the exam formats. Do note that these formats may not be available everywhere depending on the region and the availability of the exam centres.

Paper-based: Your usual end-of-year or midterm exam format. Pen and paper, nothing particulary out of the ordinary. This type has its own pros and cons, as you have to know your characters really well, especially for the more advanced levels.

Online onsite. You go to a specific exam location, which is usually at a university or a language learning centre, where you sit at a computer and do the timed exam using special software.

Online at home. As far as I know its the same as option 2, expect you do it at home.

Nothing too surprising? Wait until you get to the online HSKK part.

The HSKK

I did the online onsite format, but I naively assumed that the exam would be with an actual in-person examiner.

Little did I know that it would also be online, and that I would have to speak my answers into the computers microphone. It wasn't too bad at the beginning, but then when we had to prepare for the individual answers it was chaos.

And not the good kind.

Trying to say my answer into the microphone in a room full of other people also trying to do the same thing, with my microphone also picking up other people's answers and me being totally thrown off and struggling to gather my thoughts led me to this conclusion within the first 5 minutes of this exam: I am so not passing this.

It is what it is, and once I get my results back (in 60-90 days apparently???) I can try to figure out what to do next. In the mean time I'll be focusing on my chinese studies and see about picking up another skill while I'm here.
